Review Son Of A Pizzaiolo - Thornbury

Simmyeats. melb
We dined in recently and SOP., the restaurant is fitted out nicely with cosy indoor and outdoor seating, I particularly loved the graffiti wall on the side of the building. A trendy restaurant with a good menu and great service. We shared the arancini, pumpkin & prosciutto pizza and a rocket salad. The arancini had a beautiful golden and crunchy texture and delish filling inside. Pizzas were cooked well with a good base and quality ingredients and the salad refreshing and yum . Thanks for the invite we had a fab time.

TOP CHOICE: Went in with my daughter to have dinner. This pizza place was GREAT! Nice, relaxing atmosphere. The service was super friendly and helpful. Had a couple of pizzas and whilst we were eating, it got busy with orders. The people working were flat out by the end of our meal. The shortages in the Hospitality Industry at present are really making life hard but these guys are getting through it by sheer determination. I hope things improve in the industry soon.

One of the most gorgeously welcoming restaurants ever! Giselle and Vivian were delightful, food and drink divine, and the bill much smaller than we expected! Thank you!

Great restaurant and delicious food. Ambience was amazing and the stuff were very nice. Prices also were reasonable. Definitely coming back. Very pleased with the experience.

We were regulars of SOP around 2 years ago. (Before covid) we never got a chance to dine in, so tonight decided to pop past for a bite to eat. New owners have taken over, the menu has changed, and I’m not really fond of it at all. The pizza I don’t rate, it’s not very authentic Italian pizza. The sauce seemed to be right out of the tin, was very watery and made the pizza almost soggy. The antipasto board was nice though, very well priced for a generous portion. Service was ok, I think they may have been understaffed so I understand, and we were patient. I wish they would have carried on with the previous pizza they used to make here.

Probably the best pizzas I've ever had. Extremely top quality and worth every cent. The quality also appears to have improved recently which I found out was due to Sebastiano's awesome quality of service and attention to detail. If you're on the fence about this pizza, give it a go.

We had an absolutely delicious dinner here last night. Really great pizzas and a good selection of wines to compliment the meal. The pizza bases are delicious! It’s a really welcoming and relaxed environment to kick off the weekend with friendly staff.

We had a delicious meal here last night - shared delicious entree, pizza, salad and dessert. The staff were lovely and very accommodating of our indecisiveness over the wine and letting us stay back chatting past closing time. We’ll be back!

Quite disappointed in our dinner last night. We have been here a few times, as well as had takeaway. Our waiter was great, new and under a lot of pressure from who I presume was the owner, who bagged him out in front of customers and made it very clear that he had lost control of his restaurant. Pizza is always nice, I ordered sides and salad .. for the chicken salad at $21.50 was pretty average chicken, lemon, mayo tomato. Overall we spent a bit of money, and I left feeling very sorry for the waiter which we gave him a tip and thanked him for his great service. A message to the owner .. maybe get a few more staff and take control of yourself and don’t let it show to your customers. 👨🏻‍🍳

One of the best authentic Italian restaurant and wood fire pizza I have ever been. Excellent food and service. Certainly we will be back.

Food is great, service is really lacking from previously. Sparkling water was unlimited for a fee we were told but were not able to leave the bottle on the table, they were busy so we got thirsty. We ordered a limoncello after our mean 15 minutes later we received a limonata, seemed the waiter didn’t know what we were talking about. We then had to remind them 4 times in 40 minutes about the limoncello and it never came. We had to go to the bar to get it. Wait staff blamed the bar staff not reading the docket even though it was them we were reminding. They apologised but still really disappointing considering the level of service they used to give.

With no doubt. Best PIZZA on town! Proper italian recipe, easy to digest and gluten free option.

Coffee/pizza shop had an art-over while I was away in April. Excellent coffee. Just how I like it. And, I now have a super value pre paid coffee card. Pizza's are the best. Full of flavour. Thanks to the super friendly & proficient staff. Tani, Troy, Joey, Hugh, Enrico.

We lucked it in when we stopped for a bite on the way home. Never been there before but will certainly go back.. Friendly staff and yummy food .

Went there on Friday, 8 people for a birthday dinner. Could not get a beer other than Hawkers, everything else on the drink list not available. FFS Carwyn Cellars is across the road go buy some beer. Pizza was excellent, when it finally arrived. Main Meals forgettable, dont bother. Water tasted like the leftover from washing the dishes. Waitress must have been 1st day on the job, no idea. Won't be back.

Just had lunch here again with the family and the staff and food continue to impress. Highly recommend it. They put up with my little one which is unbelievable!

Being a past cocktail bartender and barista, I have to say this place makes one of if not the best long and short macchiato going around in Melbourne
Isabel Mascitti
I love this place ! Service is so friendly and food never disappoints, went for cup day lunch was packed and atmosphere was great would recommend it for sure.

Great food The goats cheese pizza was fantastic First class waitress Couldn't be happier
Christine Demou
Great food and great service. Not sure about charging extra for bread when we ordered and meat and cheese platter though.
Fabby Montanari
Great food, probably the best pizza by far, all the little appetizers are delicious .. It's our local little gem ....

Got takeaway usually happy with my goats cheese pizza but disappointed not much goats cheese very light on it at and the pesto tasta like from supermarket jar. Not very happy😢

Allora, Being in lockdown under Kim Jong Dan in the socialist state of Victoria, I have been curbed from Zomato reviews somewhat. However last night in my sicilian social bubble I and another sicilian were hungry and craving italian pizza, so we ordered a capricciosa. (no not that australian rubbish version) the real one with artichokes etc. Well what can i say but carry me back to Catania, Toppings were just right crust was good and it tasted as great as I. Keep up the good work, I will be back
so its a big uuuuwwwwwwww yeeerrrrrrr from me e grazie mille ;)

The pizza here is A1 but I feel as the rest of the food is not up to the same standard. I will keep coming back for the pizza though.

I’ve been here twice now and I’ve been relatively satisfied with both visits. Both the service and atmosphere are warm and welcoming. The menu is extensive and most pizzas only come in a large which is a generous amount of food (but hey, who doesn’t love leftover pizza?!). The pizza base is top quality and I could eat that base on its own and be satisfied. It is an authentic Italian dining experience and probably the best you can get in the northern suburbs. Will be back for more.

Loved my experience here. Place is quite small but has that rustic, no drama and just-enjoy-the-food-and-company kinda feel. The pasta was amazing. Will be visiting again. Loved the food, loved your service. Thanks guys.

My husband and I tried to eat here last night with our baby In his pram. The waiter who ‘greeted’ us said “the pram is too much, not with a baby”. The restaurant isn’t hugely spacious, tables are close, it’s totally understandable that the pram may be a nuisance. But there was plenty of room outside, no other patrons out there (never mind the restaurant inside was only half full at almost 8pm, don’t know what rush he was expecting on a Sunday night) and we would happily have sat outside. His manner was rude and abrasive, he didn’t even offer us the option of sitting outside or leaving the pram out of the way, he just said no because we had the baby in the pram. We would have happily left the pram out of the way for bubs to sit on my lap, but this waiter just rudely turned us away. Noi Pizzeria further north on High street has better Italian food anyway and are always wonderfully accommodating when we go there with our pram. As is the Wesley Anne, where we ended up eating, pram and all.

I did also wonder later in the evening how he deals with patrons in wheelchairs. Not the same as a pram at all, but no less bulky than ours, so how do they accomodate differently abled patrons?

PERFECT pizza! We love coming here and tonight the pizza was extra delicious. Perfect leopard spotting, fluffy dough, high quality toppings. Friendly staff, amazing pizza, great drinks, good atmosphere and mama’s tiramisu was delicious! Definitely on par with the best pizza places in Italy!

From inception of entering the restaurant, it wasnt hard to see why this restaurant is so packed on a Saturday night. With a booking to reserve our spot, we were attended to by the utmost friendly and accommodating staff. With some nice music and a really good ambience to match, we were on for a good night.

We ordered the little lamb pizza with mushrooms, and the pizza above it on the menu with a gluten free base, vegan cheese and extra pineapple and mushrooms with a side of chips. Chips were well crispy, with a herb flavouring similar to grill'ds famous chips and complimented the meal well. The pizzas here? Exceptional. Whilst the options of gluten free and vegan cheese were awesome, this did not take away from the fresh and high quality pizzas we had. Ingredients went well together and taste was exceptional. Admittedly I usually like local pizzas because of their huge amount of toppings, for these pizzas I would make an exception.

Come here for a really good dining experience, and some of the better pizzas in Melbourne. Awesome staff, ambience and food.

Food: 4.25/5
Service: 5/5
Ambience: 4.5/5
Value: 4/5

Overall: 4.25/5

Not that bad but not that good either, a half pizza half calzone sounds weird and is weird... definitely avoid. Service is a bit frantic and pizza was a little wet. Surcharge on Sunday is a bit unnecessary.

Zomato gold issue - the food here was good, the service initially was okay. The staff kept coming over and asking if we were ready to order, some people may enjoy this service, however it felt like we were being a bit rushed. All this was fine until we went to pay.. the bill was brung over to our table and we were told they were closing, as I went up to pay and show my zomato gold, the staff member who I assume is the owner or manager, changed his tone and turned quite hostile. He rudely told me that I needed to tell him we had zomato gold at the start or he could deny it ??? I have done this at several other restaurants and not had an issue ?? It came across as very rude and made me think - would the quality of food have been compromised if we told them? Zomato gold members, be warned.. he made me feel quite uncomfortable, I don’t think I will return 😣 Maybe.. Don’t offer zomato gold if you aren’t happy for customers to use it?

Best pizza in the north hands down. Friendly fast service, and in the several years of ordering from Son of a Pizzaiolo, I’ve never once had a bad experience. Highly recommended.

Wonderful food and incredibly tasty! Thank you, I’ll be back for sure.

It is one of my favourite pizza places I have been to recently. The margherita pizza is delicious. The shop is in a great place and I would recommend going.
David
Pasta was pretty good. We had three pizzas but I wasn’t overly impressed by any. A bit soggy and unimpressive dough.

Was also thoroughly annoyed by the 10% surcharge for Sunday which I had no idea about and is extremely excessive.
EatsOfMelbourneAus
Absolutely amazing!!!! I was so impressed by the food, atmosphere and service. Thank you so so so much for making my birthday dinner one to remember 😍😍🍕🍕

⭐⭐⭐⭐

So this venue has some great outdoor seating options as well as a nicely designed interior.
The staff were really friendly and welcoming and the drinks were on the reasonable side.

The Semolina chips were the best i’ve ever had! Seriously delicious! The pizzas however were good but not amazing and a even a little on the sloppy side. The mushroom pizza was our favourite.

Overall a great place to grab a bite in Thornbury.

The only redeeming feature of Son of a Pizzaiolo was the food. What was wrong with it? Where to begin... The music was too loud. The service was lukewarm. They brought the bill without us asking for it. There was a billing error and the manager insisted nothing was amiss. Later he conceded I was overcharged. But there hasn’t been any redress. To make matters worse, we were shooed out at 920 pm because they wanted to close. Plenty of Italian restaurants out there that treat their customers with greater respect. Look elsewhere.

myself and a group of girls came for a birthday dinner recently and we really enjoyed our experience. the warm atmosphere and lovely waitstaff made us feel really welcome and were happy to assist us throughout the night. we ordered a range of entrees, pizzas & desserts and all came out within a short time frame despite an almost full house. the pizzas themselves were a huge hit- wood fired and topped to perfection, they truly were authentic Italian pizzas! our desserts came out very quickly too, although $5.50 for a singular cannoli is a bit steep considering the size of it. apart from this, son of a pizzaiolo is a cute little restaurant i will most likely visit again, thanks for having us and for a great first experience 💗

Truly delicious food. Could not of been happier with the service, atmosphere and the food! Can’t wait to go back

Great service and stunning Italian good- not basic. Try the deep fried doughnut dessert

Polenta chips are good but disappointing soggy pizza. Waiting staff are excellent. Prices not cheap.

This place is just located on Plenty Road and is easy to find. Made booking in advance and we gotten a cosy spot overlooking the street. Staffs were attentive and food service was quick. So quick that there is no need to order starters and wait 40 mins for food. Used Zomato Gold here and will definitely come back for more😀

Pippa Knight
We had lamb ragu and pizza. Both were amazing. We had fantastic service and I would definitely go back! Generous serving size too!

Delicious food and drinks, friendly staff. Highly recommend!

Love their pizzas and pastas! One of my favorite restaurants in Thornbury. My family visit every weekends. Service is quick and staffs are friendly. Will come back!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING !!!

last minute dinner out for my partner and I for our Anniversary, most places have Monday as a closed day but not SOP..... and we couldn't be happier that they were open !!

Monday night's are generally a quiet night for dining but SOP was surprisingly busy, we got a nice little table up the front, we started with the Wood fired italian Olives with wood fired bread and the Calamari, both were beyond amazing but those olives..... Dio mio 🤤

For main we each got a Pizza, my partner playing it safe with the tried and true favorite Capricossa where as I risked it a little for the Nduja pizza, our eyes were bigger than our mouths but both pizzas just hit the spot, I managed to finish mine whilst the missus (heavily pregnant) got halfway thru but got a take home box.

Both pizza were topped with ingredients that remind me of my time with family in Italy, fresh and full of flavour, the fior di latte, Grana Padano, Nduja and Calabrese salami, ligurian olives , leg ham and just those fluffy, pillow soft bases of their pizza, truly what dreams are made of !!

I will highly recommend Son of a Pizzaiolo to anyone that wants to taste the real Italy, what it should be like and I will be returning very shortly with a larger group cos this needs to be shared with friends and family..... the Italian way !!
Eatenbymae
Delicious mouth watering pizzas. Probably the best I've ever had. The food was amazing and I'm glad the service was on par too. We got the seafood pizza and the porco porcini pizza. The seafood tasted really fresh. There were huge chunks of blue swimmer crab and prawns that were so sweet and went really well with everything on the pizza. The cherry tomatoes on the seafood pizza was a touch of sheer genius. The service was so attentive even though there were only 2 wait staff and they were busy for a Tuesday night. Thank you, we will be back.
Uliana Ludekens
Although my pasta was not up to scratch we had a great night. Everything else was great. They were happy to move us because the first place we were sat in was droughty. When I gave feedback re my pasta they immediately followed up and compensated for it. We left having had a great food and service experience. Thanks

Really enjoyed the bases as they were light, thin and delicious.

Beautifully authentic!!!

Visited Son of Pizzaiolo in Thornbury on Wednesday night for a catch up with my wonderful friend. Loved the fact that I was able to take advantage of Zomato Gold.

ATMOSPHERE:
For a very small lower level it was adequate. Lovely mood lighting!

FOOD:
We tried:
- Porcini Arancini
- Linguine Di Mare
- Prosciutto Pizza
- Pinot Noir

RATING (5/5): 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Overall we had a wonderful night at this restaurant. The food was delightful with the pasta being a real stand out! Would absolutely recommend and be back again 😍

Delicious Woodfire pizzas! The vegan cheese was nice and I loved that their bases are nice and thin so I can eat the whole thing without being stuffed. Highly recommend!
Ushakant
Good ambience and good service.
Wish the red wine list was better.
Good spread of veg pizza options
Base is not very thin, but it's wood fired

Staff were really friendly. The pizza was really good, glad it wasn't just your ordinary flavours but something different. The gnocchi was good but the truffle was a bit too strong for my liking. Will defs come back to try other menu items.
Tammi
Love the food here and have got it from Uber eats and gone to the restaurant for a pick up. Was pregnant at the time and the staff were so lovely when taking my order and making sure I was comfortable while I waited. They apologised for what was a short wait overall and offered me water and a table to sit at while I waited. Very good vibes and caring staff
Eat Good Melbourne
I’ve been wanting to try SOP for a while now but have put it off due to distance but when I saw they were a Zomato Gold partner it was the perfect excuse. We came on a Friday night and the place was quite busy. I recommend leaving ample time to look for parking. Staff were warm and welcoming. We ordered the truffle and porcini gnocchi, linguine di mare and porco porcini pizza. The gnocchi had great flavour with the sage and truffle. The linguine was also delicious although I prefer my pasta more al dente (which they do specify on the menu they cook pasta just over al dente). The pizza however, was amazing! Perfectly cooked base and every ingredient was full of flavour yet worked beautifully together. The pork sausage was so tasty. I’d definitely come back and try more pizza. The venue is dim and casual, perfect for catchups and date night.

Such a great experience! Amazing ambiance, friendly staff and the best pizza. Will be back again for sure! The Semolina chips are a must have!
Moose
Amazing pizzas. Wonderful base and crust, while the toppings are fresh and tasty. In addition to those pictured, I’ve had the Prosciutto and Margherita and all are delicious. A local and, when I’m being lazy, UberEats fave.
Nikki
Experienced this delicious food just last night and have to say everyone at the table had ultra positive comments. Service friendly , good mood lighting, small space . Started with arancini which was perfect. Had Ragu pasta for main, delicious! Gnocchi was divine , pizzas perfect all 4 variety’s we got! Chunky chips even delicious with a yum sour cream type dipping sauce . Would highly recommend!

⭐️ 4.5 stars⭐️

This place kept popping up on the social feeds so we had to pop in and see what it was about! Social Media is either really right or so wrong. In this case it was right and therefore a great decision to come.

What we ordered:
Caesar salad w/ chicken
Prosciutto Pizza
NDUJA Pizza (salami based pizza)
Gnocchi

These dishes were fabulous. There really wasn’t any complaints from the table. Pizzas were thin & topped with great combinations, the Gnocchi and accompanying sauce were a winner and the salad was lovely.

Because we were so impressed we shared dessert.

What we ordered:
Nutella Cheesecake
Zeppole (doughnuts filled w/ ricotta)
Calzone Dolce w/ Nutella and strawberries
Mamma’s tiramisu

They were all delicious and we found it hard to pick a favourite.
Kim
Delicious vegan pizzas and olives! Also love that they have the chili oil and sparkling water.
But I wish there were more vegan options, especially pastas and arancini or something. Also I noticed they have Vegan nutella, however none of the desserts are vegan, they should definitely make vegan nutella calzone with vegan icecream like shop 225 does! (shop 225 does vegan arancini and pastas too)
Jay
Delicious pizzas and pastas! Can't fault any of the pizzas we have tried and the ragu is amazing! Awesome service too! Booking Online is quick and easy. Two thumbs up!
Nick
Very Thornbury. Cool pizza and pasta. Pasta ragu a winner. Pizzas well put together. Gnocchi not so flash. Enjoyed the dinner, service, food and location although its expensive for what's offered.
Raymond Poliski
Amazing fresh pizza that is authentic. Gnocchi is really good but portion is on the smaller side. Lovely decor and warm feeling to the shop. Good local gem.
Rob Ert
Amazing restaurant which has delicious, authentic wood fire pizza. The restaurant has a great atmosphere even when it gets busy. The pizzas are super delicious, one of the very best in Melbourne. The desserts are also highly recommended :) (try the tiramisu - my favourite).
Mad For Food
This is my local and favourite pizza restaurant. The pizzas are fabulous and I stray occasionally to other restaurants but then kick myself because the food and experience here is so much better. The base has the billowy crust you expect from wood fire and the sauce is just the right balance. The service is genuine and they make kids welcome by catering off menu with scoops of ice cream. The beer always comes out in a chilled glass and there are some interesting varietals on the wine list. I’ve yet to come for breakfast but notice it’s always full so I’m thinking great things are happening in that kitchen

Been searching for a new pizza joint. Tonight we discovered the best pizzas we’ve had in a long time, highly recommend this place. Can’t wait to go back.
Ann T
Friendly and polite staff. Made a booking and got a table at arrival. Pizzas came out in a timely manner and tasted amazing!! The chilli oil was a great addition too. One piece of feedback would be the over priced drinks.
Stripey Sarah
Great food and lovely staff. A nice relaxed place to have a delicious meal. Kid friendly - high chairs available. Booked online and had no trouble.
Fatty_boomba
Soooo delishhhhh! You have to have the pappardelle ragu, broccolini salad and the eggplant lasagna! The service is also excellent, very friendly and remembered us from our last visit A+++
Foodadventureswithliv
cute restaurant, pretty happy with the experience! friendly staff and quick service!

the pizza was amazing, can’t fault it! i had the prosciutto pizza on the gluten free base and the base was soft and cooked beautifully! my friend had the garlic pizza and she was happy with it along with my other friend having the chicken salad (looked delicious)

the pizza had just the right amount of toppings and filled us up really well! we also had some thick cut chips with some herbs on it and omg it was delicious!!!

awesome place for a pizza night and drinks :)
Michael Stephenson
Recently popped in for a second visit and have to say it’s the best wood fired pizza I’ve had in a long time! Service and atmosphere excellent also.
Mia
Ambience/decor: What can I say it’s in High St, has that old rustic feel which I love. We had dinner, it was busy and general vibe of the place is very nice. Music was not too loud that people had to shout at each other to converse.

Service: I made a booking via Zomato for 7 people rather than 8 for a birthday dinner. With short notice they were very accommodating in making sure the 8th person can be seated. The waitress we had was very attentive, helpful at all times and in general very nice.

Food: We all loved it! Best was the pulled pork and lamb pizza. Not to mention they have the biggest portion of salumi board. It had generous portions of cheese and cured meats. Food also came very quick didn’t wait long at all. As the table was full of food they timed it very well in making sure the second round of pizza came when we were just finishing off the first round of pizzas. That’s how I knew our waitress is very attentive, she asked us when we think we’d like our next round of pizzas to come.

Price: Well priced its worth every penny.

Overall: It’s my new favourite spot, can’t wait to bring friends again soon. Next time I’ll be trying their desert since we couldn’t last time.

Local place for me. First time there, had their pizzas and they were absolutely delicious, love wood fire pizzas. Also recommend you must try their tiramisu it was absolutely divine and great atmosphere and very friendly and attentive service. Reasonably priced must book because it does get busy. Will go again.

Started off with eggplant parmigiana for entrè and that was already a winner for me. Pizza had to be up there with some of the best I’ve had. Staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. I will definitely be back for more!

Absolute favourite pizza in all of Melbourne - perfect crust, perfect flavours! We love ordering from Carwyn Cellars and enjoying with some craft beer. Best thing on a Sunday arvo!

Woah woah woah woah woah. Hold up a second... Let me preface this by saying, and I say this with no bravado or ego, but I've eaten a lot of pizza, in a lot of different places.
Until today, the absolute granddaddy of all pizzas, worldwide, was Pizza Gusta in Florence, Italy. The crust, the toppings, the sauce, the cheese. Everything was, as you would expect, excellent. Beyond excellent. Seemingly unbeatable.
Today, however, everything changed, because my wife and I went to Son of a Pizzaiolo. Everything about the pizza that was perfect in Florence was more perfect here, in this unassuming restaurant in Thornbury. Granted, I'd had a couple of drinks, but this was next. level. pizza.
I had a Margherita and added bufallo mozzarella and salami. The result was a pizza the likes of which I have never encountered. Delicious just doesn't do it justice. This was the ultimate moment of pizza perfection. The pinnacle of an art form spanning countless generations of devoted, culinary artists.
Crusts - packed full of flavour, crisp yet light and fluffy, with just a hint of char from the oven.
Sauce - devine.
Salami - a good amount of heat with a rich, savoury flavour, and present in appropriate abundance.
Cheese - creamy, silky, tasty.
This is the zenith. The high water mark. The be all and end all of, arguably, mankind's finest creation.
All hail the new King of the pizza pie. Go see for yourself, but be prepared to eat pizza every day for the next month.
Kyah English
At the moment this place sits on top of my list of favourite Wood Fired Pizza. After I tired it for the first time I kept going back once a week to get my pizza fix. Made with quality ingredients, this place is a must to visit!
Amanda Kara
Literally just left and just had to share how much I loved this place. Not only was the service on point- our waitress was lovely and attentive but not overly so, but the food was delicious and authentic. Pizza among some of the best I’ve had in Melbourne and the eggplant parmigiana was so yummy. I would even say they were on par with some I ate throughout Italy. The tiramisu was also to die for! Such cute interiors and great vibes as well. Will definitely be back, thanks guys!
Cath Ant
Good pizza base and flavours, good attentive service, nice atmosphere . Ragu pasta was very tasty, kids enjoyed it just disappointed no gnocchi on the menu
George
Food is excellent as is the service. The pasta and pizzas are of high quality. The downside is the menu is too heavily weighted to pizzas for some reason with only 3 pasta dishes which is odd, and very restrictive for them and customers.
Ned Ogley
Was an amazing night! Had my anniversary here and they had the table all set up beautifully with flowers, a candle and wine.
The service was excellent and the food was to die for. We had the arancini and meatballs to start. The meatballs were an absolute standout.

For main we shared the prosciutto calzone, was amazing. Filled with goo-ey cheese loaded with prosciutto on top, would definitely recommend to anyone.

Great atmosphere, great service, great food, great night!
Nalia
Considering all the good reviews, I was a little disappointed by the pizzas here. We shared the chimichurri 2.0 and pulled pork pizzas and the base was very nice on both. However, the pulled pork pizza had probably too much bbq sauce which overpowered the pork and everything else on the pizza (and I am normally a bbq sauce fan). The small pieces of orange were a nice addition though. The chimichurri on the other hand, was a tad bland and needed the extra lemon slice and chilli oil to boost the flavours. Wouldn't mind trying the other pizzas to see how they compare but considering all the other restaurants nearby, not sure I'll be back here anytime soon.
Odette Lo Castro
They fit us in with a last minute booking for 6 people. They were extremely accomodating & polite. They even sent me a text when my table was ready. The place was full & buzzing. Our waiter Patrick was one of the best in a long time. As busy as they were he was calm & even asked about our evening before arriving. Service with a beautiful smile. Now the food was the icing on the cake. I ordered the Little Lamb pizza which was amazing/perfect. I ordered the Calzone with dark chocolate & you could choose to have strawberries on the inside or on the side. Again so accomodating. My mouth is watering just thinking of my desert. It was oozing with flavour. Can't wait to return. Thank you guys for a great night
Two Sheds
A flat 4 for me. These were reputed to be the best pizzas in near distance. Pretty good tip actually. We all agreed that the pizzas were absolutely superb. As good as I’ve ever had. We had a few of them for the extended group. Goats cheese, proscuitto, salsccia e friarelli, Porto porcini, small garlic and Marguerita. If they’d been warmer, it would have been a higher mark. The only distressing part of the experience was watching anxiously on the app as the food was collected and delivered late and consequently far too cool. You know, I’ve never seen pizza sliced worse than these were - all slices were too big or two small - but that was more cause for amusement than anything else. The pizzas themselves were excellent. Couldn’t fault the toppings, base or overall flavours. I’d get them more often if there was a guarantee they’d be hot.

Staff were helpful, attentive and considerate. Food was good but unremarkable. Sadly management decided to enforce "cakeage" on our table of 5 for a 4th year old birthday (my son). We looked at the menu prior to coming, found no cakes so brought along 5 cupcakes. We didn't require plates or cutlery so it was a little disappointing to leave the venue with that taste in our mouth, so to speak.

It was a good pizza place to have dinner with Family and friends. Friendly staff and very helpful for first timers. Reasonable price for the food as well. And by the way the home made bread is really amazing.

Very popular on Saturday night - but the lovely staff managed to fit our large family gathering in at short notice. The pizzas were tasty and well priced for the size. The service was prompt and friendly

Son of a Pizzaiolo is quickly becoming one of our favourite local pizza places for take away dinners. The pizza here really is amazing, so much so that getting our take aways here feels like a treat! The pizza tastes gourmet, looks artisanal and is always fresh. We especially love the crusts which are thin and with lots of char and often burnt to perfection. The garlic focaccia pizza is a fancy substitute for garlic bread and while super yummy and decadent I still felt the loss of garlic bread from their menu. The Margherita is traditional and especially tasty while the porco porcini (mushrooms, sausage, pancetta, truffle oil et al) had a little bit too much going on. We will definitely keep coming back! 🍕

Fantastic venue to host your next party or function!
Our sons 1st Birthday was absolutely wonderful!

We were thrilled with the entire day - the venue was organised, clean, food was of the highest standard and quality and each and every staff member was absolutely fantastic!

Every single guest had a terrific time and commented on the fabulous food and said they’d all eaten way too much!

This day was very special for us I can’t thank the SOP team enough for making it just that and more.
Wow wow and wow. Amazing food with amazing service. Our waiter Troy was on fire. Quick service to us and everyone in our section, and great recommendations for those who aren't quite sure of what to have. Outdoor seating was very comfortable as well and although I don't usually like "super italian styled places", I actually quite enjoyed it here. The other FOH staff seemed very friendly and quick witted as well. Definitely worth a night out here. (would prefer it if they had had spicier chili oil though, but that's probably just me haha)

Cute little pizza place on High Street close to bars to wonder to after dinner. Pizzas are fresh and tasty. Service is attentive and nice atmosphere. Accommodating when we turned up without a booking which is always welcoming.

Came here and tried the chimmichuri 2.0.
Was a lovely pizza I really enjoyed the combination of flavours, something a little different. $20 is average these days for a well made pizza so no complaints here

Amazing place. The place to be. Best pizza 🍕 in town. Went with group of 10 people. Nice coffee and beautiful clean space. If you are Outdoors that’s bonus.

Great place with excellent service and friendly staff. These guys serve standard pasta dishes with perfectly cooked pasta and great ingredients. The tiramisu was the only stand-out dessert, and all others were on the slightly sweet side. Overall this place makes for a great night out for some Italian food.

Let me just begin that coming here was a random drive by and I had no expectations whatsoever. The dinning experience they delivered here in Thornbury was an absolute delight! By far the best wood fired Italian pizza I’ve had in my life thus far (Well until I go to Rome in a few months). I’ll let you know.

The quality of ingredients is just well thought out on these pizzas and the dough was magnificent. Full of flavour. And when the waiter asked if I wanted chilli oil, well that was just a cute little treat because I love a spicy pizza.

The staff were very friendly and food came out in no time at all. Brilliant!
Thanks everyone I’ll be back. Cheers!

I went there with a friend of mine about two months ago but I really like my experienced. We weren't super hungry so we just shared a salad and had a starter each. I got the eggplant parmigiana and yes! It was perfect. Really tasty and cheesy. We also got a dessert, a dark chocolate calzone and of course was good. You never get wrong with that. Service is really polite and prompt. Nice work! The only thing, my negroni wasn't so special, but nothing wrong with that.

I’ve been to SOP a lot of times, and it never fails to make me happy. Delicious pizza with yummy toppings - base is nice and fluffy. Pasta is delicious as well, as is the arancini, and the chips. The desserts are also great. Highly recommend 👌🏻🤗

Quick, casual and really tasty. People often overlook a simple, yet great quality pizza. You don’t know what you’re missing out on until you try it. If you like pizza, you’ll love Son of a Pizzaiolo.

Had the prosciutto pizza and tiramisu for dinner. The pizza was a little soggy in the middle but I thought the pizza was really tasty. Really like the thin crust and the wood fire flavor on the pizza and the prosciutto.. We also ordered the meat lovers pizza and it was tasty. They have gluten free options to the delight of my dining companion. Service was impeccable. Will go back again soon!

Dined here recently with a group of 5.

Restaurant was fairly busy and a little bit cramped at the table we were seated at.

My pizza was pleasant, but not outstanding. I had the salsiccia e friarielli. The Pizza contained pork sausage meat, friarelli, some chilli, and mozzarella. It was slightly burnt in some places and the topping was fairly sparse.

Bottles of wine ranged between $50 - $70 which I felt was a bit steep.

However, I have to say service was friendly and helpful.

Lately pizza has been quite delicious at SOP! The 'bosco' pizza is one of my favourite! Only had pizzas which I was really happy with, I look forward to trying something else next time!

We dined as guests of Son of a Pizzaiolo tonight and experienced the most mind blowing zeppole of my life to date. Located on bustling high street easily accessible by tram, you step into a seriously cool interior and prepare to embrace carbs. They specialise in wood fired pizzas but also offer delicious brunch fare Friday-Sunday.
I started off with a lovely basil mojito which was super refreshing and an interesting twist on a classic cocktail. A thoroughly enjoyable beverage that went down a treat with the entree eggplant parmigiana which was rich and flavoursome. We then shared a cannelloni pasta which was housemade as are all their pastas. This was cooked perfectly al dente.
Now for the main event, the stunningly puffed up pizzas, the hallmark of a well made wood fired base. We tried the caprese and the little lamb both of which had a very thin base just as a traditional Italian pizza should. The buffalo mozzarella on the caprese was delectable and of the upmost quality. I found the lamb topping a little sparse but understand that an authentic Italian pizza has few toppings to allow the pizza itself to shine and these were very well made pizzas indeed, the sensational crust being a clear indicator.
Despite being so full I am really glad we tried dessert because those little zeppole were the absolute highlight for me. Just perfect little pillows of freshly made deliciousness. Light and fluffy, they were just so immensely pleasurable to eat the hardly even needed the yummy salted caramel sauce they were served with.
We also tried the Nutella cheesecake which was surprisingly light being a more traditionally Italian ricotta base. You can never have too much Nutella in my opinion but I like how it was served with the additional Nutella on the plate so you could chose to add as much or as little as your preferred to sweeten to taste. I personally scraped the plate clean of Nutella and that’s probably why my stomach is sitting here bursting as I write this. Hot tip make sure you leave room to really enjoy dessert as those little donuts are not to be missed

delicious menu and reasonable price. Perfect for both lunch and dinner as the pizza is heavenly aswell. Would highly recommend the Nutella french toast but with an extra jug of water to cut through the richness. Love this cafe.

Been here once before with a substantial group of roughly fifteen people, and received such terrible and rude service. I thought I’d give them another go with two of my friends tonight, to be again served by the same waiter and again be given the same disgustingly rude service. Will definitely not be visiting again, and turning others off trying this café/restaurant.
