Review Out Of Sundaland - Thornbury

Meeghan Bell
Wandered past, looking for a nice restaurant and wandered in. We were lucky to get a table late in the evening & we enjoyed the mushroom rice paper rolls, the crispy eggplant in green curry sauce was to die for & the deep fried chicken & broccolini was delicious. Wonderful service at a good price. We'll be back!

A hidden gem! The perfect combination between Asian and western food. Delicious menu and very well presented dishes. Very friendly atmosphere at affordable prices. What else!!...

Food was amazing, well presented and didn't take long to arrive. Pretty cool how you can see it being made too. Maybe try the prawn laksa and definitely try the chicken ribs!
Gavin
The cocktails were fantastic, but the food and service was pretty bad. All the meat was charred, but not in a tasty way. Some of the flavours were just odd. Avoid the prawn bao.
Lachlan Beagley
Nice youthful take on Asian cuisine with great beers on tap to help it down your gullet. Definitely worthy of the travel time.

Loved this restaurant. Food was great and staff were super friendly. (Even though we were significantly older than the core)
Luke Simmo
Great restaurant but I don't think it ever reopened after Christmas. Sign out front says Business for Sale.

My wife and I are Vegans and this chef has topped it in the Vegan taste. We will be back. But please get some Vegan Ice Cream.

This place was ok I have to say we had one really terrific dish which was the eggplant though lost us at the steam beans "read the fine print" ok So when there's a vegetarian ordering at the & obviously your going to share some thing such as the steamed beans do I'd say it's up to the waiter to take note that there's a vegetarian at the table & let you know that it's hot Binito a shaved fish item that you might like to order that without the Binito as that's the vegetarian option yes we would have if only ??? Especially when it's a $10 side it has a V" oh did I mention read the fine print as the waiter pointed out as we paid our bill yep some might like it but we didn't oh to add the table for two was right in the back doorway to the loo freezing when people are coming in & out. So I don't rate it, well I did I have them 3 stars for the one dish it was ok overall.

Had high hopes for this to be my new modern Asian joint but I was sorely disappointed The cauliflower was overcooked and limp (it should've had more form in it), it was either almost burnt or the oil was burnt. Aside from the soy (which really just made the dish extremely salty), the mussels had little flavour -- this was certainly not XO sauce, nor a modern adaption, at that. Rubbing salt to the wound, we were recommended the shoestring fries because the mussel sauce would've been "so good" to dip them in (also to note: there were bits of burnt fried cauliflower and tempura batter in amongst the fries). The beef cheek came most highly recommended, which I guess makes it the most disappointing. The meat was tough, we couldn't pull it apart with a fork and spoon and had to cut through it with a knife. The flavours were lacking too, it was all just too obvious, too much -- too sugary, too peanutty, the only spice I could taste was star anise. Green beans were simple, nothing remarkable but still more enjoyable than everything aforementioned... The rice was cooked well, but perhaps the only standout tonight was the eggplant -- crispy tempura batter, soft on the inside, nice kaffir-limey green curry dressing. Fresher, brighter flavours would've been nice but instead we got heavy and overly rich and obvious flavours. I know two stars seems harsh but three would imply I liked most of it

Tasty modern Australian Asian menu, delicious fresh flavours and definitely not run of the mill! Would highly recommend giving it a go, super chilled atmosphere and aptly decorated for chilling and drinking beverages too ✌

Warm, friendly atmosphere. Great food. Highly recommend a visit. Worth travelling to.

we had many delicious delicious dishes but the baby corn and the chicken ribs are a must! good selection of beers to wash it down with and nice chilled atmosphere to enjoy it in, can't wait to go back.

The beef cheeks and roasted bone marrow were exceptionally good. Matched with a man size 750ml bottle of beer it was magic. Highly recommended.

Great joint! Great menu and the food was amazing. I'll be back

Beautiful food and such a great atmosphere but you guys need to find an easy way for people to leave you tips - I'm sure you would get them!

Can't wait for return visits where I plan to work through the drinks menu on a warm summer day.

Been to this little gem two times and I found one of my favourite places to go. Service is friendly without being on top of you, the food is fantastic, it got us trying to guess the ingredients to replicate something similar at home! great price (we spend less than $80 both times for two people) Plates are for sharing and come spaced out so you have got enough time to enjoy each one of them. The north side of Melbourne is changing and growing, or it has for the last few years but I am discovering this now. Chato Tapas for Spanish, Umberto for Italian and Out of Sundaland for Asian!

The best pork I have ever had, the food here is incredible as is the drinks list and the relaxed and friendly service. Great value for money, I've eaten here alot and will keep coming back. Highly recommend.

Out for a little celebration, managed to tomato-ed this great new Pan-Asian kitchen in Thornbury! A local restaurant woohoo! Initially we wanted to do Longrain but Melbourne’s cold weather did not what so ever encouraged me to drive into the city again. Thank god this restaurant’s menu provided all i had asked for with items fuses with influences from all across Asia mixed with Australian ingredients.<br/> <br/><br/>The limited menu contains a selection of share plates from a few small ones to large ones. Sometimes it great not too have too many options however i would be slightly happier to have at least another meat option on each menu category.<br/><br/>Duck ribs with a chilli, tamarind and orange sauce - My least fav dish of the night which i could have done without, would have been great unfortunately the duck meat was too tough which then made it really chewy. Had to use my hands which was fine but wasn’t pleasant when it was stuck in my teeth. Flavour wise it was tangy and sweet as suggested but not chilli....

Wow, wow, WOW!!! <br/>This place is incredible. <br/>We did a feasting banquet with 6 friends where we got to try a bit of everything from the menu & it was sensational! <br/>Every dish that came out was bursting with flavor & cooked to absolute perfection. <br/>The menu boasts creative & unusual dishes yet it all just seems to work & everything we ate delivered in taste & in presentation. <br/>Standouts were the eggplant & port hock - and I don't even eat pork - very tasty indeed. <br/>Now for the decor - this place rocks. It's artistic with a creative homely vibe. Comfortable with a glorious gas fireplace for those chilly winter evenings which makes it super cosy. <br/>Staff were attentive & friendly which only adds to the appeal of this place & attention to detail was second to none. <br/>Overall if your looking to try something new & to experience something different which will make your tastebuds sing then this is the place for you. You won't be disappointed - well done to the team at Out of Sunderland - keep delivering good grub :)

Absolutely delicious! Just walked in with some friends on a lazy Thursday evening and really enjoyed the food! Will definitely be back for more!

If you are anything like me, and will happily travel a good half an hour for good food rather than ‘make do’ at a local that doesn’t shape up, you will know what it is like to discover great food right on your doorstep. Since recently moving Northside, I have loved discovering the mecca of food available in Northcote, Thornbury and Preston.
Mad For Food
Ordered takeaway because was in a rush. Had a very tasty beef rendang and caremalized pork belly. However more meat and less rice next time please. Otherwise nice addition to this late-centric neighborhood

On the surface, Out of Sundaland appears to tick all the boxes - great atmosphere, friendly staff and an interesting menu. While the food was nice, it doesn't leave you with a satisfied feeling after it's all over. We also found it to be a bit expensive for what you get. Overall, Out of Sundaland has promise but has plenty of room for improvement.
The City Lane
Out of Sundaland Thornbury is a new restaurant on High Street that fuses influences from all across Asia with fresh Australian ingredients to create dishes that above all, taste great. The restaurant sources its produce from sustainable suppliers and uses native ingredients too.

Was really excited to hear about Out of Sundaland opening and after two visits I have not been disappointed. The food is brilliant and exactly what high street needed- a range of sharing plates invites you to taste most of the menu after a few visits. The layout is perfect for this bar filled strip and perfect for getting a little tipsy before heading out to one of them. I am really excited to see how this adds to the Thornbury vibe and having lived here for 20 years I can not be more thankful. It is exactly what we need. Well done, amazing job.

Beautiful asian-fusion in a really trendy, ambience enriched space in Thornbury heights. Service is great (although you have to order at the bar), the only complaint I would have is that the menu could be more expansive (and dessert would be nice too).

Absolutely finger licking good! We've been waiting for what feels like forever for these guys to open and they did not disappoint. We almost literally licked the plates. We had the mushroom starter, edamame (SO spicy but incredibly good!), the laksa and the chicken. Can't wait to go back.....! Welcome to Thornbury 😄

Very good food and service. We had the whole deep fried fish, the grilled okra and the baby corn. It was all delicious. Definitely coming back. Recommended.

I am absolutely gobsmacked at the quality of food served here. Fantastic! They take off-cuts to a whole new level. Never would I have ever thought I'd be muching on crispy pig ears and actually enjoying myself! The chef's ham hock was melt in your mouth goodness and the crepe was basically an explosion of flavour on my tastebuds. I might sound like I'm exaggerating but honestly, I'm not. I am so glad I made the decision to try this place out. Will definitely be back, and will definitely reccomend to all my friends! Thanks to Chef and the lovely owner who we had a lovely conversation with! Fantastic service, amazing food 👌

The food was exceptional, every dish, couldn't fault it at all. Good beers on tap in a relaxed place, and very friendly staff. A standout in Thornbury.

Such a fantastic addition to the area- chef is from Hanoi Hannah and food is some of the best Asian we've had in Melbourne. Wine list is great. Could benefit from having a few spirits too but will 100% be back. Staff were attentive but not in your face. Couldn't rate it highly enough hopefully sticks around!
Jem
Great new restaurant in Thornbury. Absolutely loved the bone marrow dish and the okra entree. Standouts were also the coconut baby corn and the beef cheek. Definitely will be going back to try more of their menu!
Lachlan Beagley
Cheap, tasty, boozy, with a touch of groovy. Definitely worthy of the travel time, take a swing at the specials as there's an ever changing menu to tantalise your taste buddies.<br/> <br/>Casual dining that has an interesting menu with many tasty morsels. Hip tude-fuelled  decor  stands out like the food on the plates.

Out of Sundaland boasts a great decor, so quirky and artistically put together, even the bathroom has been given a unique look.  Lots of cosy nooks to settle in and  enjoy the ambience.  The next major decision is what to eat.........many visits are required so as to try absolutely everything, my favourites are the Prawn Laksa, Corn, Pickles, Snapper, Tofu Salad........will be back soon to try even more.....this place is really going to take off. Oh and did I say that the beer is really cool......I mean icy cool - delicious.

This place is fantastic. Delicious food, great range of beers and friendly staff.  Super cool styling and nice and warm for winter! Their Sichaun chicken ribs and wallaby rice paper rolls are the absolute business!<br/>Get on it kids!
Erinn Metcalfe
The Sichuan chicken ribs are sooooo addictive! My friends and I absolutely LOVE the wallaby rice paper rolls, the pork neck skewers, the tofu salad, the baby corn... ok we just love everything! Highly recommend multiple visits as you will want to try EVERYTHING! Enjoyable beer and wine and also a few unique cocktails. The decor is pretty kooky and fun, who doesn't love giant golden dinosaurs coming out of the wall!? Sweet as courtyard and artwork throughout the place. Definitely get down there before it becomes one of those places you just cant get into at dinner time!

Great new place to hang out with friends and family. Nice decor, homely atmosphere, ranges of craft beer and most importantly food is fantaboulous. Don't miss Grilled Cinnamon spice quail with pomegranate dressing, and sechuan chicken ribs. Will be back soon.
