What a place ! What a place ! If you ever visit here, ask for Chef Lakshay's Chocolate Soufflè. Trust me you won't stop at one.
Spent my birthday here today and the food & service where exceptional great restaurant for any occasion 🌟
Entrees were amazing, charcuterie and escargots were faultless. Mains were a tad over salted, the MS4+ steak flavour was perfectly cooked, béarnaise sauce I’ll give it a miss, boring and extremely thick wouldn’t recommend. I’d return for a snack, but the mains aren’t that special.
My favourite French restaurant in Melbourne. I have been there several times and never disappoints. Fantastic wine list and menu. Waiters are very attentive, meals come out in good times. My wife just loves the chocolate soufflé. My favourite is the French onion. It’s very moorish and quite a generous serve. If you didn’t know you were in Melbourne you would swear you are in Paris. Prices are reasonable and I always find a parking spot, even though it’s a busy road. Highly recommend this restaurant.
This was our first time coming here. The place was packed and lively. I love the ambience. The waiters was superb. The food, i just can’t describe how good it was. Love the escargot and the french onion soup!
**UPDATE** Best French in Melbourne and one of best restaurants in Melbourne, and with one of the most reasonably priced wine lists. Profiteroles and Chocolate Soufflé are sensational; if going as 2, order both; don’t be afraid to try unusual items, e.g cervella - lambs brains or a special item rabbit ballotine; great texture, flavours, quality eating. Order 2015 Voyager Estate Art Series Can Sauv, it will treat you well..
Each time I’ve gone I’ve always left impressed. The freshly shucked oysters are always fresh and flavoursome, calamari likewise is fresh, not crumbed to death and cooked well. The escargot dish hits the spot, and the sauce is great to lap up with fresh bread. I personally recommend selecting a main from the specials list. The rib eye was just to die for, perfectly cooked, generously sized; the pommes frittes are yummy, and don’t forget the tagine of vegetables. The barramundi also is fresh and worth ordering if you want a piece of fish. The desserts are just sensational - not sure why this place doesn’t have a chefs hat; it’s vastly superior to many restaurants that bizarrely do. Making you think the whole process is open to questioning.
If you are looking to celebrate an occasion with some exquisite fine French cuisine, Bistro Thierry should be at the top of your shortlist. It was completely packed out on a Friday at lunchtime, so I was glad I made a booking.
The freshly made bread whetted my appetite complementing the garlic and parsley escargot and French onion soup entrees. The porterhouse steak and grilled rockling were beautifully prepared with a generous side of shoe string fries.
The mouth watering desserts capped off an indulgent meal. We certainly had no regrets choosing the tarte tatin and crepes suzette. All washed down with some sparkling champagne and a glass of red. Really can't complain!
The perfect place for an anniversary dinner. Their service was impeccable, the food was delicious and the ambience was lovely. We will definitely return!
Consumed:
Lamb shoulder - two bricks of shoulder meat. A little dry in a couple of spots, but pretty tasty. It came with some dollops of goats curd (which I don't think added much to the meal), a couple of roasted onions (with the outer, inedible skin included, which I thought was odd) and a tomato relish (which was tasty, but didn't really fit with the rest of the dish to my mind).
Eye Fillet - medium. Tasty piece of meat with a nice charred flavour to it. Maybe a little redder than one usually expects for medium steak ( I assume cooked sous vide and then charred). The fries it came with are standard thin-cut chips and not particularly interesting.
Cauliflower Gratin - as expected. Very saucy and served in a small pot that had been individually baked.
I did have an overarching problem with the mains in that none of them were very hot. Even the cauliflower gratin was only warm when it reached our table.
Dessert:Creme Brulee - pretty much as one would expect. An acceptable example.Chocolate Souffle - A pretty nice rendition. When it is served, the wait-staff pour chocolate sauce into the middle of it. By the time I got to the bottom of it there was some liquid sitting on the bottom of the ramekin. It's all pretty nice though with some good crustiness around the outside of the head.
Staff were friendly and appropriately attentive. Even with a full room it wasn't too noisy. No gluten-free bread option was available, but the bread provided (in a generous quantity) was pretty good.
Hands down the French restaurant in Melbourne.
I love the food and the setting here.. I always feel like I’m back in Paris the moment I step foot in the door.
We came to Bistro Thierry hoping to show an international relative some great French food. We had been here years ago and loved the peppercorn steak (which we couldn't find on the menu sadly) and hoped they would share in the same appreciation of Bistro Thierry. Surprisingly - these expectations were exceeded. The food was great and the service was friendly and frankly - exceptional so much so I felt compelled to write this review.
Gorgeous little French restaurant, perfect for a special occasion or date night. The staff are fabulous and attentive. The food is all divine, from a simple steak and fries to fish dishes and flavoursome side salads. I’ve never had a disappointing meal and always walk out in a great mood and excited to go back time and time again.
AMAZING FOOD AND SERVICE!!!!
Seriously cannot get over the experience my boyfriend and I received when dining here! Must orders include the escargot and foie gras (starters). Also ask for more of their bread because the bread is bomb as!!!!
An institution on Malvern Road near the corner of Williams, Bistro Thierry, a classic French restaurant, emanates all things French including decor, French wait staff and fabulous French food we considered faultless. Hats off to the chefs hard at work in the kitchen! We opted for their Prix Fixe menu and absolutely loved all our dishes and now eagerly await our next visit!
just had lunch there on a Friday, every table full. Special lunch $39 2 courses glass of wine. Loads of choices. Bavette steak and chips was great with lovelly sauce, and great onion soup. Nice wine served with it.
Waiters, mostly french were also very welcoming.
Cozy traditional French interior, although tables are a little bit packed together, but food was unbeatable good and amazing! Their escargot is a must try, the green sauce made me drooling by just look at it, so enticing, I licked my fingers when having it with the French bread! The crepe is a perfect dessert to end, although it is soaked in the tangerine sauce but everything matched very well complementing each other. The sauce tastes very appeticing and the texture of the crepe is still very springy, not the soft one at all! Highly recommended!
It’s a super nice French restaurant with authentic decor and warm friendly waiters. Their dishes are so good and really worth 5 points. We came for Friday lunch and it’s all packed. We will come back for dinner next time. By the way, Patrick is serving our table and very attentive.
This restaurant is amazing. The food is really tasty and elegant. Great French ambiance. I am French and felt like home. The service was really good, waiters were polite and taking care of us. I strongly recommend this restaurant.
One of the best dinners I’ve had this year
3 courses superb - well priced and will be returning
Entrees are world class, mains very good and desserts excellent. Staff very good
Fantastic French! Excellent service, authentic decor and the food, well that was perfection. We ordered some of the classics: Escargot, Blood Sausage, Beef Bourguignon (my new fav dish), Suprême de Poulet jaune rôti, some Pomme Frites and of course the Crème Brûlée to finish. The meals were well presented and tasted sublime, the only let down was the sitting time as we had to make room for the next arrival so dessert was a little rushed. Will most definitely be back!
Came here for our Anniversary, and we had:
- Assiette De Characuterie
-Beef braised in red wine dish.
- Braised Veal shank dish.
- Creme Brûlée.
- Soufflé au chocolate.
- Wines.
The French food here was really good and good portion too. Customer service is excellent. I love it and will definitely come back. 😀
Classic French restaurant with paper over the white linen tablecloths, attentive waiters, sensational steak and pommes frites, creme brulee, escargot, and everything you’d hope for in a French restaurant.
Not cheap but worth every cent.
I love French food and Bistro Thierry was a lovely dining experience with their classic french decor and impeccable service and attention. Food was delicious too although my requested medium rare steak was more medium than medium rare. Friend’s medium rare was done perfectly though. The very hospitable staff were quick to attention and offer for the steak to be redone.
Traditional French type Bistro with impeccable service. Food was lovely comfort style as expected, and appropriate for a winters night. The average patron had a flavour of grey, not an issue just creating an expectation. If you are feeling Old School with quality than this is your place.
Food was amazing here! Had the snails n scallops for entree, beautiful! For mains we had the braised beef n twice cooked duck, again lovely, portion was huge! I’d recommend coming to this venue. Staff try n make it an authentic French experience by speaking French constantly!
Bistro Thierry offers authentic French food which is spectacular. We were a party of 7 which included Tim.E, Bearabbit our partners and a friend. We all thoroughly enjoyed what was put out in front of us.
The quality of the food was high, the meats tender and the sauces full of rich flavour. My escargot was garlic and creamy whilst my eye fillet melted in my mouth, the bearnaise sauce matched perfectly. The sides and wine all very nice too.
Unfortunately we had the early sitting time which did mean we were rushed and had no time for dessert, a longer sitting time would be better but this was advised to me when I made the booking. No doubt we will be back soon to try some dessert which I am sure would be as good as the entrees and mains.
A very high recommend here, the menu is excellent and the restaurant does make you feel like you are sitting in France.
Bistro Thierry encapsulates everything French - from the food, the ambience and to the service. With the company of Timinmelbourne and Simmyeats.Melb, our respective partners and my friend visiting from overseas, the 7 of us indulged in a most delicious meal that night.
We started off with an aperitif that I still am unsure of what it is. It tasted like sparkling ribena which was quite nice. The wine that FWG chose was lovely.
The escargots were sensational, we couldn't stop ourselves from ordering more bread to dipped into the luscious garlic butter. The lamb brain wrapped in prosciutto and calves' liver were also cooked to a wonderful texture.
The mains were great too. I had the veal shank and it was a massive serve of tender, melt-in-your goodness. We attempted to eat healthy by ordering greens for sides, but we were too occupied with the fries that came with the steaks to finished them.
We would have loved to try the desserts, but as we dined during the early sitting, we didn't had the chance. We were in the process of demolishing our mains but with only 15 minutes to spare and our bill already placed on our table without a word, we took it as a sign that there will have to be a next time for the desserts.
I had dinner here w friends for an earlier sitting. Te service was great, friendly and cheerful. This was like visiting a Parisian restaurant, quite an authentic experience really.
I had an aperitif for starters which was delicious. The food was excellent, I had escargot for entree and duck leg for main.
The wine was lovely, and overall I had a great night w Hello. Imnikki, Simmyeats.Melb our partners and friends.
This restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere as soon as you walk in. You’re greeted by warm and lovely staff. The food was delicious and the wine menu was extensive. Will definitely come back.
Couldn't ask for better or more authentic French food and atmosphere. Felt like I was in France! Impeccable service and dishes. 5 stars, will definitely be back soon!
This is definitely one of the best French restaurants I’ve been to. My partner and I came here for dinner and the place was buzzing and vibrant with every table filled! Luckily, we had a reservation and we were promptly shown to our table right next to the window which was a lovely spot. The decor and ambiance of the venue is most appealing. I really liked the paintings and small ornaments that were dotted around giving it a genuine French feel.
Our French waiter was enthusiastic, passionate and very helpful. He definitely was there to please. We were both struggling on wine choice but he gave some great suggestions and we were not disappointed. Although he did come off as a little bit of a salesman!
We ordered the quail and a green salad for entrée. The salad was a bit boring but the quail was lovely - succulent and the sauce definitely made the dish - it was not on the menu, as it was a special.
For mains, we both had steaks with chips. The steaks were cooked to perfection and we both thoroughly enjoyed them. The chips were well cooked and crunchy, although I did not like how they were presented. They were in a wonky cone shaped holder that wobbled and actually fell over when moving the plate. The red wine jus was divine.
For dessert, we shared the chocolate soufflé, I didn’t care so much for the ice cream as I thought passionfruit or vanilla would have suited better but the hot chocolate inside was beautifully cooked, silky and decadent.
Even though we were the last to leave there was no pressure to do so at any time. I really enjoyed my experience here and would most likely be back for the next special occasion.
You want a French experience? Go there. Food is to die for and service is great. Also French wine...👌 the rillettes are particularly excellent.
Really love this place. Excellent wine list and professional customer service. The highlight of my meal was certainly the escargot- that garlic butter sauce just blew my mind. Amazing tartare- so fresh. So well-seasoned. And to top it off the creme brûlée was to die for. Worth every penny. If you're looking to take yourself or a friend for a treat- DO consider this place. Can't wait to return.
Lovely ! Had a lovely business lunch here last week. The owner warmly welcomed my host nicely (even though I ended up paying) and the two colleagues both had steak and chips. I had a piece of snapper grilled to perfection on steamed spinach and salad on side. We had a lovely French red and had a good meal and time. It is a lovely good decent French restaurant.
My only complaint is that they don’t provide a whole fish on the menu.
I honestly expected more from this venue.
The food is good, service accomodating, atmosphere friendly.
It's like eating a home cooked meal though.
Nothing too special about it. No wow factor.
Had dinner here on a Friday night. It's a small restaurant and tables are situated quite closely together. It was busy so the atmosphere was lively. Wait staff were friendly and service was quick and attentive. We both had steak for our mains which were cooked they way we liked them. Escargot entree was tasty. No complaints about the dessert, the souffle was the standout.

Our mummy and daddy bears were due for a date so we took both sets out for some French food. Luckily for us, Mr D was one step ahead of us and booked in Bistro Thierry in Toorak. Stepping into the eatery, it transports you back to France. All the staff were french and it was very warm and cosy. We sat down and started ordering off the menu since we only had 2hours to eat.
Maqnifique! Cannot go wrong when you dine at this cozy bistro! Every meal is simply prefect! Best French cuisine in Melbourne with classically French waiters creating wonderful ambience.
A wonderful place for a delicious 3 course meal! Food is outstanding here and service is beyond impeccable!! Staff are extremely friendly and helpful
❤️🐷🐷
They do beautifully cooked steaks here and their salad nicoise is so delicious and fresh it made me fall in love with salads. The bread they give is warm and free-flowing and most likely home-made. Service is excellent too.

A fantastic place that transports you to France. The restaurant is quite petite and is decorated just like a french bistro with small items representing different regions of France.
The wait staff greet you in french as you first enter and everyone at the front of house appeared to be a french speaker.
The tables felt appropriately spaced out so that we did not feel like we were dining with the tables next to us.
Between 4 of us, we ordered the scallops, steak tartare, calamari and escargots for entree. For mains, three of us had the steak frites with the bernaise sauce, mushroom sauce and red wine sauce and the fourth person had the chicken dish with gnocchi. The steaks were cooked to perfection and although simple, were amazing. The chicken was also very well done and the gnocchis that it came with were delicious. We also ordered a side of mashed potatoes and spinach. Both were also very nice but the spinach was a little ordinary compared to the quality of the other dishes.
For dessert we ordered 2 of the chocolate souffles, a creme brulee and a tarte tatin. The chocolate souffles looked and tasted incredible. Upon arrival they create a hole in the souffle and pour the chocoalte into it. The other 2 desserts were also delicious and I must say that the tarte tatin was my favourite.
All of this, along with a bottle of the 2013 Chateauneuf-du-Pape wine cost around $500 for 4.
This worked out to be a fairly reasonable priced dinner for the quality of the restaurant and food.
The only thing that I could pick on is the lack of service when it came to ensuring that our water was replenished. At the beginning they were very good but as the night progressed we ended up having to keep asking for more water. This unfortunately is what kept me from giving this place a rating of 5.
Had my birthday dinner here in November last year. Absolutely amazing, impeccable service. Drinks were consistently topped up and barely had to lift a finger. Staff were attentive but not in an annoying way. Food again was absolutely amazing, steak was cooked perfectly, great fries, and chocolate soufflé was literally to die for. Fantastic french menu that covers all bases and provides many options. Easily the best french restaurant in Melbourne. Even my father who travels frequently & is the world's most judgmental consumer could not fault a single thing and loved it all. Definitely worth the $$$ for a special occasion or just to treat yo self
Food is traditional French 8/10
Atmosphere 9/10
Service was the let down for us 5/10 - ?manager/front served and was quite abrupt and unfriendly.
One of my favourite places to dine. A very inviting atmosphere and ambience, with intimate table lamps and everyone dressed to the nines. The food and wine is excellent. I would recommend the lamb brains and escargot dishes. Service is professional and prompt
Verdict: white diamond
We went here for our book club meeting and the food was amazing!!! The scallops were succulent, the main courses were filling and flavourful and the desserts decadent! Worth a visit or two for sure. Merci beaucoup!
An interesting lunch experience over at Bistro Thierry. My friend and I were the only people (alongside our waiters) who were under the age of 50. We had the fixed lunch $37 deal and I got the French onion soup and the beef bourguignon. Slightly disappointing as the French onion soup was quite watery. The beef bourguignon was quite lovely though; would've liked the portion to be a little a bigger.
Truly a french restaurant gem that spoiled my tastebuds. Came in with a group of 6. Entry and dessert are beyond perfect. Main to my humble opinion can be improved. Staff was super professional and friendly. This is definitely on my private dining list. Love ~~~~~
I've been fortunate to experience some of this citys most fabulous Parisian fare, but this is undoubtedly the best by far. To start, although my partner had made a booking unfortunately it was not recorded in their books, but this did not deter from the Maître D' delivering excellent service and finding us a window seat table. Perfect! The service was without fault and the food was a cut above. When I see a Tartare de Boeuf on a menu I must try it to compare. It is fair to say I've had a great deal of experience with this dish and Bistro Thierry takes first place. The only thing I could fault is the noise level but this is fault of other raucous diners, not of the restaurant, and is to be expected of a Thursday lunch crowd. A definite must try and one that I will be returning to many times again in the near future. Sorry, no food photos. This is not the type of place for food photography. Elegance in dining happens here. One to be thoroughly ensconced in and enjoyed in good company throughout the whole dining experience. I did however grab a picture of the wine lable for future reference. A fabulous drop from 2010. Also highly recommended. Enjoy.
What a great experience. Dined here with my partner for a fantastic dinner. The braised beef was outstanding as always and steak was on point. The bread just kept coming all night which was awesome. Oh the souffle. I don't think I've had one better. Been coming here over the years and will keep on coming. Highly recommend for genuine french cuisine
Celebrated my friend's birthday tonight here in Bistro Thierry.
Enjoyed the meal a lot. Have their traditional onion soup, which was a bit salty to my taste. The braised beef was very tender.
The Waiters were very friendly and made a lot of jokes on our table. They even offered my friend a free birthday desert with a candle. Very sweet.
Recommend it to anyone who want to enjoy an authentic French cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere.
A Melbourne classic.
As good a French restaurant you will find in the city of Melbourne. Stepping inside is like being transported to a Parisian street. The French waiters provide excellent service.
The food is impeccable. The French onion soup and snails are the absolute stand out for mine, however I haven't had anything on the menu that wasn't fantastic.
Price comes with the territory of eating such quality - for me it's an absolute no brainer to pay this price for this quality meal.
Great New Year's Eve spent here. 5 courses. Really still a great institution in Melbourne. Excellence in customer service.
Just for mention. Didn't like the 4/5 course but desert was excellent!
Left at 11.15 to watch the fireworks!
Bistro Thierry is the kind of place you find in Melbourne, but not Sydney. An institution that's been there for years, yet the formula has barely changed. The food is just as good as when it first opened, and the service is impeccable
I don't say this lightly, but I think Bistro Thierry is one of my favourite restaurants. Love the way it's set out and the waitstaff are always on the ball, friendly but not invasive.
I also love how they offer champagne by the glass, especially if you go with people who don't want to share a bottle. Food wise, everything is simple but beautifully made. The onion soup is just perfect, it looks small but once you finish it, you realise it's a lot bigger than it looks!
Love the fillet steak here and how they actually cook it properly. The fries of course are winners as well, as you'd expect. Dessert wise, if you can fit it in, I'd definitely recommend the creme brulee. Silky smooth and with the perfect crust on top.
Thanks Bistro Thierry for being consistently amazing! Can't wait to be back again.
Every time I come here I leave feeling full and happy. Besides the fact they have the best steak in Melbourne they also have extremely attentive staff who have worked at the restaurant over many years. I have been for lunch and dinner on numerous occasions ranging in groups from 2 people to 10 people and I cannot say a bad word about this restaurant. The fixed price lunch option is great if you are looking for a quicker bite to eat or on a tighter budget but still want to enjoy the magnificent steaks Terry and his team serve up. The Caesar salad, minute steak and a glass of wine are my usual go-to meal for lunch and if I am there for dinner I will always get the chocolate souffle, it is to die for.
A divine Toorak establishment with food, wine & service to match.
First of all the atmosphere is exciting. Lots happening which gives you the feeling that you're in for something wonderful!
I had the zucchini flowers for entree which were lovely, but could've done with one more. The accompanying salsa was well paired. A colourful plate made it even more appealing.
Main was the veal with caramelised witlof & potato waffle. I very rarely order veal but this was just perfect! The witlof matched well with the perfectly cooked, 'pinkish' veal of which there was sufficient amounts. The potato waffle was a nice touch but not overly necessary.
For dessert the Tarte Tatin was amazing! Probably my favourite course (funny that). The caramel was just beautiful and provided a wonderful end to a fabulous evening. A must have.
Service you couldn't fault. An all French ensemble it took local service to the next level. The staff knew their menu, knew their wine & even knew the French branded cutlery we were using. Their banter with the table, not just ours had everyone on side and enjoying the evening.
One of the many jewels in Melbourne's crown.
Saddle of rabbit special was so amazing and the tarte tatin was rolling around in some great caramel sauce. I've come here for the lunch special before and that was nothing to write home about but if you order off menu, that's where the good stuff's at. Atmosphere is pretty French - I never feel like I'm eating/drinking enough to make the waiters happy.
As soon as I walk into the eatery, memories of my time in Paris just clouds my brain and la vie en rose playing in the background.....Very Parisian set up. Waiting staff : flirty French men with French accent! Great attentive service and not annoying. I enjoyed my Steak Tartare very much!!! Decent portion for the prices they charge! I will be back for more soon enough!
First time we went to the Bistro Thierry last night. Ordered pumpkin carrot soup (see pics), which was very delicious, and Soupe a l'oignon which has not tasted like a true French onion soup unfortunately. We ordered Bavette Grillee with Bearnaise sauce (see pics), the sauce has no flavour to taste unfortunately but the meat is very nice and tender, and also ordered Boeuf a la Bourguignonne en croute which was mildly enjoyed. For the last course meal we shared Crepe Suzette (see pics), which was very enjoyable. The services of the staff is of a high standard but the food could be improved with better flavorsome meals and would receive a rating of 5. Thank you for the lovely services which helped us enjoyed our night too.
Had quick lunch here with family, the service was excellent :)
We ordered the pumpkin soup for appetizer and it was delicious, scallop was good too, caesar salad was good but the anchovy was huge, the chef basically put the whole thing there. The french onion soup failed, it was a bit bitter and had a funny taste.
We also ordered their charcuterie and it was good, love the pate, terrine and prociutto.
Main we ordered the fish, it was moist and perfectly cooked, minute steak was okay, not much taste but the meat was tender, beef bourguignon was a bit bitter but the mashed potato was divine. Dessert we ordered the cream brulee, it was good, saw they used lots of vanilla pod, but had better one elsewhere, apple turnover tho overly sweet and wont order again.
Will go back next time for dinner, i definitely gv them extra rating for the excellent service ;)
Gorgeous food and excellent service. Even the free bread was delicious. The sizing was also very reasonable. Will definitely come back here in the future!
This is my favourite restaurant! I order the Le Steak Frites with red wine sauce every single time! Best steak in Melbourne! Also love the scallops, John Dory, and creme brûlée! It feels like little Paris!
A cosy and warm little piece of France. Steak frites is delicious and I still dream about their creme brûlée. Perfect spot for a special occasion as well as a casual lunch.
My favourite restaurant! Amazing, fresh, tasty, well presented food as well as an amazing wine list and the service is just devine - cannot fault this place. Fine dining at its best!
It's like going to Paris in Melbourne! Love coming here for the alternative service and the delicious food. I always leave a happy customer!
Why go to a cafe when you could go here for the same price? Pleasant and helpful staff, excellent menu including a lunch special. We had the Bavette and the omelette as mains which not only captured the eye they were a delight to eat.
Went here for my girlfriends birthday, dinner was exceptional..steak was cooked expertly and the boeuf bourguignon saucy, moorish and a delight.
Amazing French food just like you would expect to find in a quaint little French town. The waiters are all French with sexy French accents and the food is very satisfying.
As a French woman and food lover, I had to try a few French restaurants here in Melbourne! So far, Bistro Thierry is the only one I go back to on occasions. It is quite fancy and expensive but great for an occasion or a romantic night out. The atmosphere is great - very Parisian, dim lighting, candles, cosy, wood, leather, pictures on the wall. All the waiters are dressed in black and white as they would be in France and most are handsome flirty French men which made me feel at home instantly!! They are all very friendly and helpful (much friendlier than one would expect according to cliches about French rudeness!!) The food is authentically French and it is good. It could be better but it is very good (I am difficult only because I know French food really well but most people would find it excellent). As a side order, I always have the sautéed green beans with garlic and almonds - really nice. The French fries are great too. The chocolate soufflé is delicious and so are the tarte tatin and the creme brûlée - all very traditional French desserts. I have been here with Aussie friends several times as I wanted them to try French food and they all loved it. My husband and I also like to have occasional dates there when we have a French food & atmosphere craving :-)
This is the best French restaurant I've ever been to in Melbourne, hands down. You literally feel like you're in France, from the atmosphere, to the beautiful table settings, the wait staff to the exquisite food.
Love there steak , also a fan of the bacon wrapped lambs brain , great atmosphere, great service and fantastic food , I recommend this place highly.
Came in today for lunch by accident as there was not much around open. So glad we came in the place was packed but they managed to find us a nice table near the window. Staff very attentive and took time to help us with our selection . Food was unbelievably good. Also must say the best coffee in the whole street. Will definitely come back.
We came to Bistro Thierry to celebrate a birthday. The restaurant was very packed and tables were very close to each other. I was a little bit uncomfortable to sit too close to other people and the restaurant was very noisy, because the room was very packed. However, the food was fantastic, food didn't look innovative but it tasted very delicious. I highly recommend you to try the classic French escargot, steak Tatare and the eye fillet steak! ...My goodness, the chef absolutely nailed it! The steak was cooked to perfection, and the dessert: Apple caramel (Tarte Tatin) and cream brûlée were very delicious. I definitely come back again. Overall, the restaurant atmosphere was good, service was ok, food was fantastic and food price was reasonable.
Exceptional!!! Bistro Thierry is an experience within itself. The food is exceptional and the service is of the same level. Some may disagree but I believe without a doubt their creme brûlée and escargot (not together of course) is the best in Melbourne, in addition to the many other wonderful dishes served! I look forward with excitement to returning again very soon!
Bistro Thierry, you glorious bastard, You have won 'steak of the year' by a stretch. The eye fillet was plump, juicy and cooked to perfection. I tried to stump you with the red wine sauce but you nailed it. Oh, you nailed it. You created the platform for perfection with you steak tartare for entrée just so you could lord over the main like a king. The cheese at the end was as beautiful as the vintage posters on the wall. The wine list was singing and the waiters were attentive. Well done.
Very much works as per the description on the box. More upmarket and traditional French food serving the clientele one would expect given its location. The food isn't particularly innovative, but that might just be a good thing given that sometimes harking back to old school fine dining is a comforting pleasure - you know exactly what you are supposed to get, and Bistro Thierry does that well.
Most of the typical French classics make an appearance, and the desserts are some of the stars - the tarte tartin and brulee in particular. The savoury food represents very good versions of what you would expect. Knocking back a steak and frites is a wonderful thing here.
Fit-out is very French brasserie, and is more fine dining than casual. Service is very professional, and certainly friendly enough. Extensive and expensive wine list.
This is a great example of conventional French upmarket dining, but be prepared to part with some of your hard-earned Francs for the experience.
This place remind me of Paris. Absolutely great. Do not leave this place without trying the creme brûlée. The service is so good, it is really professional as you should expect from a French Bistro. Try their lunch special; It is great and affordable. I have been going there for years and i have never been disappointed.
5 is not enough for this little gem! 10 sounds better! The atmosphere when you walk in is warm and cosy! Very friendly people. The owner was there, the man himself Thierry, such a delight and very friendly.
The wine list has a wide range of international and local. We had a French wine picked by Thierry himself, a beautiful smooth red wine. For entrees we had the steak tartare and the soft shell crab. What can I say but beautifully cooked and amazingly presented! For mains we had the salt bush rack of lamb with parsnip chips! I'm never having normal chips again! Fantastic! We also had the lamb shanks, best ones we have ever tasted, meat was tender, flavoursome and accompanied by the perfect reduction, sided by beans with roasted almonds on top!
We were deciding if we could even fit dessert in but the next table had the chocolate soufflé and it looked too good to pass up! It was Amazing!!! The ice cream was homemade, so creamy, so rich, loved every bit!
Service was outstanding, very impressed. Highly suggest you treat yourself and indulge the tastebuds!
What can I say about this beautiful little gem. First things first, the decor was inviting. You immediately sense the cosy and classy vibe of this fantastic eatery. The service perfect. Hands down one of the best we've ever experienced. Hats off to our waiter. Amazing job. Oh and the food... this is why I love French cuisine. It plays with your palate and leaves you hanging for more. The oysters were so juicy, the steak was cooked to perfection and the beef tartare was the best I've ever had! Dessert? You must try the chocolate soufflé! It's to die for. Can't wait to come back here again!
Great cozy french restaurant. Atmosphere reminds very much of France. One of the best places I've been to for steak and the Passionfruit souffle is amazing.
One of Melbourne's best french bistros. Food is always at a high standard with a selection of classic dishes mixed with new and exiting specials writing on the black board. Atmosphere is formal, elegant yet still feeling relaxed and not too loud.
Love this place!!! Romantic and intimate settings for a lovely meal or to celebrate an occasion. Especially liked the goats cheese salad. Definitely will be back soon
A classic French bistro. Always packed full of locals. All classical french dishes in full splendour but also some surprisingly innovative modern dishes. The room is a little packed but not to Francesoir proportions. Service always warm and friendly. Highly recommended
Hussle, bustle, noise and laughs makes it my favourite place so far. We were fortunate to be served by the owner Thierry and his recommendation of a Monte Blanc beer first follow by a glass of French white that accompanied fresh oysters and escargot in a creamy basil butter sauce. I could not stop eating the bread with this delicious starter (I never eat bread what happened)?
The mains were steak frites and a Rockford salad, perhaps a little boring but delicious. The French fries were hot and crisp, the steak soft and full of juice and the bearnaise sauce just wonderfully perfect. The owner recommended a bottle of chateauneuf du pape which was asensational 2010 and quite well priced.
For someone that does not typically have desert I chose to have what very one else was have a mountain of chocolate in small white dish, yes the chi late soufflé that was opened and had hot chocolate sauce put in by the waiter which seemed to be from about 6" high.
Awesome night, fantastic service and the best French I've had in Melbourne so far, reminded me of a little bistro we ate at I'm Paris in the historic square. No #1 for me now boys well done.
Excellent every time! Myself and husband had the fixe prix lunch yesterday- as always it was superb. Stand out is the French onion soup and the tart tatin was also amazing. Love the endless fresh bread too. A great atmosphere, and staff very attentive. Love this as my neighbourhood locale!
Had an amazing dinner at this local favorite. The menu is simple & refined, & most importantly well executed. The service is warm, yet professional.
Very professional. Quiet environment and great food. A bit on the pricey side for the serving sizes but my partner loves it there. Awesome meal and service. Would go back for a special occasion.
Love the genuine French bistro vibe at this establishment. Great food and unpretentious, friendly service. Never disappoints. I consider myself fortunate to live close to this Melbourne treasure
we ate here on Monday last with some good friends who frequently dine here. Three of us had the eye fillet and one had the fish fillet. The 3 steaks were brilliant. Soft, tasty, cooked as we requested and nicely served with a basket of French fries. two shared side dishes and a bottle of wine made for a great meal. Quite pricy for one course each but we really enjoyed the food. Service and ambiance were good. Be prepared for an expensive meal if having 3 courses. $125/couple for ONE course is a lot but enjoyable.
I still am yet to find chocolate soufle better made than here. Perhaps I just have to go to France, yeah right.
Walking into this place is like a small slice of France- The staff are particularly friendly to little ones. The rack of lamb was a little over cooked and so are their steaks, which was such a shame as the sauce is lovely. The duck could be redered more but the sauce, I want the recipe. The crepe suzette is just yummy. But I can never get past the souffle.
Loved it! Food is delicious and hearty though I did feel
Some dishes were too salty. Dessert is yummy. Overall really tasty and great food.
One of Melbourne's Great Restaurants. It's amazing reputation is well earned . Superb food and excellent service make for an amazing dining experience .
Easily the best French Restaurant I've been to in Melbourne!
My husband I visited Bistro Thierry last weekend and were not disappointed! We have been sampling French restaurants for a while now and Bistro Thierry is easily a head & shoulders above the rest.
We started with the escargot & scollops both dishes were incredibly flavoursome. We then both had duck for our mains - confit & l'oronge - Wow!!! The red wine sauce that covered the duck confit was mouthwatering & the duck fell off the bone on both plates. We had a side of decadent mash & beans & ended the meal with a cheeseboard & desert wine. Absolutely every dish we ate was spectacular! I can't rate Bistro Thierry highly enough for the exceptional food & friendly service - an absolute standout experience, can't wait to go back!!
This place is fabulous! I have been coming here for over a year now and not once have I had a bad meal. Service is always great, food is always perfect and the atmosphere is lovely!!
Visited here today for lunch, I was really blown away by the greeting we received on entry, and the friendly service throughout the meal. Despite reading previous recent reviews, from my experience this is still a top notch spot.
Been here a few times now, I've almost got a standard order by now, Snails for the entree, Steak of mains and creme brulee for dessert all this washed down with a full bodied red. Simply cant go wrong.
If i had to be picky, i'd say the adjoining tables are a bit too close for comfort, though i reckon its all part of the ambiance.
The best kind of friendships, are the ones that remain unchanged despite time apart. In my opinion the best restaurants are the same. Bistro Thierry forms part of an old group of restaurants for me that are at the core of the kind of places we love to recommend on Decisive Cravings. Bistro Thierry like so many long standing restaurants in Melbourne are so deserving of their patronage because of their commitment to real hospitality, quality of service and produce, and consistent food every time. Before I moved away from Melbourne, Bistro Thierry was a favourite for me in terms of a special occasion, or treat lunch or dinner. Since my recent return in April it has proved to be unchanged and in a city where the restaurant movement is ever-changing Bistro Thierry is a comfort. Their food is probably best described in this way as well with comforting, hearty French fare that charges the taste buds and leaves you feeling warm and happy.
Lovely food, great friendly service, classy ambience. Loved my dining experience here, although if it was less cramped (tables are soo close to each other), I would have loved it even more.
Excellent night. Good food in truely Parisian atmosphere. Highly recommended.
I went to this French Bistro last sunday for dinner, the place was absolutely full the staff was very friendly and helpful. I have been advised on the Boeuf Bourguignon wish was an absolut delight and to end this amazing experience the very popular chocolat souffle was to die for.
What all French restaurants in Melbourne should aspire to!. I took my partner for dinner here during the week after visiting a few times with friends. The food is sublime and unlike most French restaurants in Melbourne, the food servings are generous and the service is warm, genuine and attentive. I think it speaks volumes that the restaurant was full to capacity on a cold, Wintery Monday night! My partner loved the minute steak and the pea and sage puree that accompanied the lamb rack was divine. Merci!
Best bistro in Melbourne bar none. After dining at Bistro Thierry for the sixth or seventh time I'm so pleasantly satiated I can't wipe the grin from my face. The food is not overly pretentious while leaving room for some modern nuances, particularly from their specials menu. Chose the scallops to start: perfect. Eye fillet with red wine and shallot sauce: melt In your mouth steak. Service was fast but professional and knowledgeable (if in doubt, ask. The Bordeaux recommendation was perfect with our mains). Thank you very much Bistro Thierry! We will be back again and again.
Absolutely loved it. Amazing experience. Best staff and food around.
Great Restaurant, Beautiful food, Great Service. We dined at bistro Thierry this evening and we were truly impressed. The wait staff were attentive, professional, and we enjoyed testing out our limited french to them! Great fun! The wine list was impressive, everything you look for in a restaurant. And the food was just so tasty! My wife had the rockflathead, cooked with a crispy skin and a melt in the mouth risotto of fresh prawns and peas. And my steak, medium rare was cooked to perfection. We even heard the table next to us also say that it was delicious! And the desert, well you can't go past the chocolate soufflé and the Apple tart! Yum yum!
Highly recommend, we can't wait for another fabulous evening at bistro Thierry! Loved it!!
Last night I was sitting at a bistro in Paris... well that's what it felt like at Bistro Thierry (511 Malvern Rd, Toorak). It was mid week and it was a full house, which is a sign of a very good restaurant. It's a classic French Bistro and we scored a table right by the window so I had a good view of the entire restaurant and my friend had the street view.
I thought a tuna tartare would be a better… And look how pretty it looked. I had a small problem with the menu this particular night. I just wanted to eat all the entrées… I couldn't go past the quail special but figured as long as we ordered a side of pommes frites it would be fine… and it was… OMG, the french fries were fantastic…
When you think of Romance your mind sweeps you away straight to France or their Romantic capital Paris a place where love connects you with another. Hearts bloom, girls swept off their feet and the food, oh the food. If there is something that could bring people together it's food..... well it would win me over every time that's for certain. Bistro Thierry located in Hawksburn was our destination, and I have to say Romance on a plate was delivered. Veal tartare; delicate veal with a soft quail egg, hints of herbs and truffle was melt in your mouth perfection. I am a lover of tartare and the softer flavour of veal was just to die for.
When I speak with fellow food lovers about French cuisine in the south-eastern suburbs, only two names rise to the surface – Bistro Thierry or France Soir (11 Toorak Road, South Yarra), ‘or’ being the operative word.
Now onto my favourite part of the night. Dessert!
Taking advantage of A's upcoming birthday, I decided to book a lovely dinner at Bistro Thierry as he wanted something a bit more lowkey. Several good things have been said about Bistro Thierry and I'm so glad that it exceed our expectations. We were seated at a table next to the window, and although the view of Malvern Rd isn't anything special, it did pull us away from the hum of other diners and gave us some privacy. We ordered a bottle of the Carlei Estate Pinot Noir 2005 and I'm definitely no wine expert so the description is as follows: The palate shows white peach, citrus and grapefruit mingling with hazelnuts. This is wrapped in a creamy texture that is dry with crisp but gentle, firm acid at the finish. Starting off with Snails, we could smell them even before they arrived. The comforting and mouth watering smell of garlic and parsley butter prompted us to ask for more bread so that we could soak up all the juices that escaped the snail shells. The snails were wonderfully tende
Lovely restaurant. This is a lovely restaurant in the suburbs. The meals were fantastic. Serving sizes are good and are of a traditional fare. The onion soup and snails were amazing as was the beef in the pastry. And the host is very funny and makes sure all the guests are happy. Very enjoyable
Wow!!!. I had the pleasure of having lunch at this fantastic restaurant on Tuesday this week. Everything was amazing, from the service, to the atmosphere, to the food. I can not fault anything about this place and I will most definitely be back for sure!...I have to add that the Chocolate Souffle is to die for, and Thierry the owner is a great down to earth guy!
Cant get enough. Love this place, love everything about it. I have taken friends and family here for dinner & lunch and everyone enjoys the food, the service the setting.... Never disappoints me! Merci
Simply the best in French!. We had a wonderful evening of great food and friendly attentive staff.
Our friends were delighted we chose this French restaurant.
Thank you again for a lovely experience!
Everything was amazing! Ser.... Everything was amazing!
Service was attentive and beautiful. Food was great, lovely atmosphere and good wine list!
What a Great Place. We have eaten at Bistro Thierry twice now and I would have to say this is one of our favourite places to eat. The food is fantastic. The french onion soup is the best soup I have ever eaten! The environment and service could have you believing you have travelled to Paris. If you are looking for a great meal go here.
Festivus - Super Duper Awesome !. Why have I not been back ?
This was amazing food
Entre, Main and desert YES YES YES
The French know something
East to see why its my friends fav spot
Nice place. Nice menu, good food.
Great lunch option.
The soufle and creme brule are amazing.
Love it!. Love this place. We lobbed without a reservation, and despite the place being packed were not turned away. We had to sit at the bar on the only two remaining seats in the house, but that proved to be a lot of fun! Next time I want to sit at the bar again. We had lamb cutlets which were melt-in-your-mouth awesome. The sauce was delicious without being overpowering. One thing I would have liked was some veggies as part of the meal - not too many as the lamb was the star and I would not want that overshadowed. It would have just rounded off the meal nicely, however. The atmosphere was wonderful - the staff actually conversed with one another in French which added to the appeal - and it's hard to decide if atmosphere or food was the highlight! Will definitely go back if I'm in that part of Melbourne again, although it's a little out of the way of my usual haunts in West Melbourne. Even hubby liked this, and he's a fill-your-plate-up-with-all-you-can-eat-for-next-to-nothing kinda guy. I guess the meal quality at Thierry's outshone the quantity (it's not large) and expense (we won't be taking our stomach-is-a-bottomless-pit children there!).
Loved this place, beautiful food, lovely service, great atmosphere, so cosy and beautiful, it was expensive but the standard of food made it worth it. Yum!
16 October - another amazing meal. The staff are divine and we sat outside as we have a toddler. This french onion soup is honestly the best in town and I maintain this is the best french restaurant in Australia. Amazing champagne list!! Steaks perfection and the Belge salad a winner.
Been in multiple times and this is quite a stuffy place in terms of clients. Amazing staff! !! They have a great wine list, cramped indoor seating and a few spots out front which we usually sit at as we have a toddler. Steaks are good, beef stew is a good portion with bacon lard ons, slow cooked shallots and great potato puree, duck a winner and 5 star service. As we are only early 30's the crowd could be our grandparents age and all look up and down every other patron in a very intimidating way - most with red noses from drinking too much wine.
Beautiful Lunch. I came in today for my birthday with my partner and baby and the Prix Fixe lunch for $35 which was terrific value and absolutely delicious.
The staff are attentive without being in your face and I loved they were French.. so many times I go out and feel the place I'm at isn't authentic but this is the real deal.
I had the French onion soup which was a large serve with a delicious gruyere crouton and the minute steak which came with a huge portion of chips and salad. I'm not a fan of the veal jus and next time would get it without yet my partner had the ceasar salad which again was such a terrific serve and fresh and crisp. He also had the steak and loved it.
The semillon sav blanc that came with the meal was sweet and fresh and a perfect accompaniment. I also had a Yarra Valley Sparkling wine which was amazing.
Since it's walking distance to home we will definitely be coming back.
Very nice restaurant. Has heaps of old world charm. I was in a large party which ate here today. The food was very good and the service attentive. This was a special experience. The place is not inexpensive but I'd be very happy to return.
Elegance & authenticity. The atmosphere here is amazing. You really feel like your in France! The food was exquisite, modern & traditional. Ordered the Lamb brains & escargot to be adventurous but couldn't bring myself to eat it lol. My partner however enjoyed it in small doses. Would dine here again. Service was very authentic!
A favourite. I can't fault this place, their steaks are amongst the best you will ever eat. Do yourself a favour and have the chocolate souffle too.
I had 2 courses and a wine off the Prix Fixe menu - the Les Huîtres, (fresh oysters in a mignonnette sauce) for an entrée and the Bœuf Bourguignon (beef braised in red wine) for my main - both perfect dishes. For dessert I had the Tarte Tatin - a lovely apple tart with caramel and calvados scented ice cream - delicious! I really enjoyed the dining experience at Bistro Thierry - the waiters were welcoming and knew the menu well and the food was amazing. I will definitely be returning.
Flawless! Obviously not cheap, but cannot fault any aspect of the food or service. The duck was perfect and the tarte tartin to die for.
Great French food with an excellent service. Went over there last Saturday and saw Tony Abbott so this is definitely a good hangout the rich and famous :)
Fabulous dining experience
About As Authentic As France
I can't help but like this place... The ambience is just wonderful, unfortunately the staff are really hit and miss which is just such a shame because it really is a charming little bistro....
If you want to try French food definitely get to this place. It's as French as it gets. Even the waiters are authentic!!! I think :)
My first time at Bistro Thierry last night was a gastronomic extravaganza. The steak la frites was absolutely superb. Perfectly cooked to my specifications and every mouthful was savoured. The waiter on our table was wonderful, attentive at the right times and subtle jokes throughout the course of our meal made out dining a real pleasure. It was my first time but it won't be my last
Beautiful ambience, fantastic service and divine food. Never a disappointment Bistro Thierry is a staple on my go-to restaurant list.
Fantastic. Great food and very good service, we went there on a busy Friday night and were catered for brilliantly, i guess the only negative point i could make was the fact that they had run out of two entrees, but on the whole excellent
Yum Yum (Miam Miam). What can I say, I am a BT devotee and just love the snails, steak frite and great service (typically haughty and put down - so nice to banter). Love it and put it as #1 French in Melbourne
Old favourite. Been going for 8 years, love everything about it apart from their oysters which are watery rubbish & at 40 odd dollars a rip of, go to fegaris on Hampton st for best at 17 a dozen, anyway I digress, it really is fun to go, check out the plastic surgery tragic on the next table, soak up snail butter with copious amounts of bread then minute steak & any sauce plus a bottle of chateau neuf du pape mont Redon!
I love Bistro Thierry. Their steak frites is perfect with bernaise sauce, with their green salad and Badoit (french Sparkling water). I know it's a safe choice but it's so good. The meat is so tender. I could not ask for a better meal although the boeuf bourguignon looked really good also. They nailed the crepes suzettes, they were spot on. But it's a hard choice to make, as the chocolate soufflé is also to die for...
Yum yum yum but $$$. Definitely want to go there again. Service was standard, I have had better but am glad I didn't have the bad experience some reviewers have had!
Portal to Paris. Love it, Love it, Love it.
Step in and be transported to a brasserie in Paris - you'll forget you are in central Melbourne here! The French Onion soup is the best in town, the wine list amazing (a good mix of medium to expensive wines, all well priced for their quality). The steak frites is always cooked perfectly and the bearnaise sauce... I might be drooling thinking about it. Other fantastic menu items include the duck and the steak tartare and the blue cheese salad. Don't get me started on the chocolate souffle - it is just to die for. The service is lovely, very french (they'll keep an eye on you but leave you alone to enjoy your meal). The tables are perhaps a little close together, but that's not an issue once you are sitting at your table!
It's not a cheap night out, but if you're going to indulge yourself - do it here, you won't be disappointed
Wonderful food and atmosphere. The food was delicious! - I had the twice cooked duck and my partner had the steak. Both were cooked perfectly. The dessert was to die for! It was so hard to choose just one. Unfortunately we had something to eat a couple of hours beforehand so couldn't fully appreciate the whole experience - but by the looks of the dishes coming out around us - everything looked tasty. They have a great wine list and the waiters were very friendly and provided great entertainment. The seating was a little cramped, but it just added to the whole atmosphere. I will definately make sure I don't eat before I go again :)
Fantastic Every Time Does not dissappoint. I love this restaurant every time I go to it - it does not dissappoint! I have always gone on a Sat eve for dinner ok its expensive but what they do is oh very GOOD!!!. The waiters can be a little patronising explaining to me that poulet is chicken oh well nether mind.... I can nether eat 3 courses so I tend to stick to entree and main- French onion soup and Beouf Bourginon my faves at some point I really hope I get to try the cheese board ! Tip: Do book ahead if you want a Sat eve as every table is usually gone.
Seriously Good Food. Bistro Thierry, serves seriously good food, and the service is very professional. The waiters know their stuff. The food is on the pricey side, but worth it. You should go.
Food in the best French tradition. Being in Melbourne by myself for a Club event and staying at a hotel in Toorak, I dined at Bistro Thierry. I was attracted to the menu, as I have long been a lover of French cuisine. I had the Steak Frites with a green salad and a glass of Tasmanian Merlot and then followed with the Creme Brulee for dessert. The steak was a fantastic piece of meat, cooked to perfection and set off beautifully by the Sauce Hollandaise. The chips were crisp and delicious and the fresh, tasty salad greens were accompanied by a piquant dressing. The Creme Brulee was to die for. I am perplexed by some reviewers saying the wait staff are rude - I found them all very friendly. Sure the prices aren't cheap, but I don't mind paying for a really good meal, well-cooked. Believe me, I've had more expensive meals which were a lot worse! I would highly recommend Bistro Thierry & hope to take my husband there some time when we are in Melbourne.
Amazing. Wow wow wow. what a beautiful restaurant.!! so cosy...everything was perfect!! from the champagne on arrival, to the red wine, to the beef that melted in my mouth and a selection of 2 desserts. we 4 women were blown away!!! definitely be back here..
A little fix of France.... OK I admit it! I am a shamelss Francophile!! I love all things French - food, wine, champagne, language, culture,, design etc . I have French relatives, French friends, French neighbours and have even been renamed by friends with a typical, if not old-fashioned, French name. I visit France every year. In between when I need a little fix of France I come dine at Bistro Thierry. Whether lunch or dinner the place is bustling like any popular Parisian bistro. The food is great. Infact I've never had a really good meal in Paris with a similar 'moderate/high' price menu. Oh sure the waiters here can have a bit of attitude but nothing like the inattentive, rudeness of the Parisian waiters. I'm sure they would never all round up and sing 'Happy Birthday' (loudly) in French to you as they did to a somewhat emabarrased moi, on one occasion. The food here is honest, not pretentious or over fussy. The creme brulee to die for. Great atmosphere, great food and generally good service, makes for a wonderful dining experience.
Very French. I'm somewhat amused by all the people who were offended by the wait staff. Going in to Bistro Thierry, I was expecting snooty waiters... after all, they're French!
The food was wonderful. I had a special, the rabbit, which was tender and very tasty, however, I also stole a bite of the beef bourguignon - beautifully tender and full of flavour - and the steak, which was perfect. The desserts were wonderful as well, I'd possibly go back just to eat those!
Definitely worth a revisit, once I save up a little. Not cheap by a long shot.
Always superb. BT is our family favorite for celebrations. It's a five minute walk from home, always friendly greetings, comfortable chairs & well-presented table settings. The food has been excellent without exception and the bill without surprises. Often sad that we didn't have space for Tarte Tatin! It's like being in Paris without the jet lag.
Lovely atmosphere and good solid French bistro food. The prices are rather high, but the service was good and quality high. Memories of bistros in France came flooding back. My only issue was the price. But will def be back. You should also try France-Soir and Chez Bob. Both nearby.
Bistro Thierry is one of my favourite restaurants and I keep coming back time and time again for the same reasons: lovely service, great ambiance (always so warm and inviting) and fantastic food. The steak is always a winner and I haven't found a better tarte tatin anywhere else. I am mid twenties and I'd say the average age is about 50 but I don't feel out of place here. And I like that the waiters are mostly all French :)
Bistro Thierry ~ Excellent. For my daughter's 16th Birthday we dined at Bistro Thierry last week, well, yet again, I cannot fault it. Not that I am looking for faults, I was so pre-occupied with trying to hide a front tooth which had snapped off that day and my Dental Appointment was the next day.
For many reasons I love Bistro Thierry ~ it is close to home, the food is excellent, the service is excellent, the wine list is amazing, the ambience is wonderful and my 16 year old daughter has loved Bistro Thierry from the first time she dined there, It has many happy memories and guess what, we are going there tomorrow evening to celebrate my fathers Birthday.
It may sound boring but my parents are at that age where they no longer like to venture far from home so Bistro Thierry, we love you!
We do dine at many other wonderful restaurants when we are not obligated to dine with the 'oldies.' A little more respectful, my wonderful parents.
Fantastic!. One of Melbourne's best restaurants. Not a cheap menu but extremely good quality. Excellent service. A truly enjoyable dining experience. I highly recommend it.
Perfect for the midweek catch-up. Love it! Great place for that week night steak and a glass of wine with a mate... I know the menu is more expansive than this, but they just happen to do a great steak...Keeps me coming back
Beautiful steak although service could be a little better
Does Bistro come from the Russian for speedy?. I am generally not a fan of French restaurants with the alouf service and terrible wine lists. So I was predisposed to dislike this joint, but their honest menu and wine list and efficient front of house won me over. I think I even saw one of the waiters smile once when no one was looking. Also the steak was 1000% or there abouts better than France-Soir
Good, not Great. Had a lovely evening at Bistro Thierry recently, but somehow I think it was more to do with the company rather than the restaurant. The restaurant has a lovely French vibe and is cosy inside. Clientele were on the very mature side. In our 40's, we were all feeling very young!
Service was very good, which is always a bonus., especially on a busy night. Our table wasn't ready and we were given complimentary champagne whilst waiting ( which was not for long).
The food was mostly very enjoyable, with a couple of exceptions. Entrees were superb. The Steak Tartare was delicious - yum! And the oysters evidently also very enjoyable. Unfortunately the duck confit was very, very salty and both of us who ordered this made comment. Edible, but only just. Lamb and steak were excellent. Frites were perfect. Good wine list, and wine by the glass had nice selections.
Desserts were very disappointing for a French restaurant. I thought the Tarte Tatin was very average, and the Creme Brûlée rather thick and grainy. Not at all what I would have expected. If you want fabulous Tarte Tatin, you must try Bistro Vue. The best I have ever had.
In some ways this restaurant seemed a little tired, even on a bustling night. However, overall a very enjoyable evening, and I would probably go back.
Couldn't fault it. Oysters, great. Cheese, great. Steak, perfect. Wine, fantastic. I'll be back fo sho.
Best steak in town!. If you want a guaranteed nice meal out- this is the place to come. We come here regularly and have heard the whole menu is delicious but I can never go passed the steak and pomme frites with red wine jus. PERFECTION.
I liked it, the food wasn't amazing but it was good and the entrees & mains were both a decent size, it had a nice ambience, service was normal- except I didn't like that when they called to double check our booking they confirmed we would be done after 2 hours.
Honest French fare. Forget France Soir and try Bistro Thierry. For authentic french fare at a fair price this is the place for you. Offering you warn and friendly service and a clean premise, Bistro presents everything to patrons France Soir does not. Stick to classic French dishes and you can't go wrong. The desserts are impressive, as is the wine list.
Frites to die for!. Had my first visit to Bistro Thierry a few weeks ago. Overall it was a great night, although the service was a little odd. Our main waiter was mostly pleasant, but also a little standoffish at the same time. The older guys who collected our empty dishes (we would have licked them clean if it was socially acceptable) were really, really lovely.
The food was fantastic. I skipped an entree as so I could fit in dessert. Steak frites for main is kind of mandatory for me and it did not disappoint. The steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly. I could see the little flakes of delicious sea salt melting into the steak. So good. The frites could possibly be the best I have ever tasted. I like how you get your own serve on your plate. When it comes to food, I am not a sharer!
My sister and I had profiteroles for dessert and they were pretty delicious. My husband had the chocolate souffle, which tasted pretty good to me. Unfortunately for him, he had the same dish at Vue de Monde earlier in the week, and it didn't quite measure up.
The atmosphere there is very nice. We had a great corner booth tucked in behind the bar. It was dark, cosy and full of happy chatter. Except for the couple on a date at the next table. She was more interested in her iPhone. So awkward!
I would definitely go back, even though I wasn't amazed by the service. As long as you're prepared for it, it's worth it for the food and atmosphere.
Most mains are not under $35. The entrees were beautiful, my partner's french onion soup tasted delicious! My spanner crab with salad was to die for! On choosing mains, it was traditional French food, and although cooked perfectly, for the price, I was expecting something a bit more daring than just meat with vegies. My partner's ducked wrapped in proscuitto was impressive, but my beef burgundy pie wasn't really a pie and was quite boring after a while.
Service was okay, didn't have our reservation written anywhere, not sure at the start if we had a waiter either, but after that, our assigned waiter was very friendly and polite.
Also, there is really only one main below 30, which is vegetarian. Majority of mains are over 35.
Like I mentioned before, I did enjoy it, but wasn't worth the price, will go back, but only if we can't go somewhere else.
A very enjoyable dinner. The excellent reviews for this restaurant are justified. With France Soir and Bistro Thierry we are fortunate to have two consistently good bistros in this part of town, offering similar meals and experiences. Where Thierry surpasses FSoir is in its more comfortable interior - there's no need to screen out the swinging doors and the galloping waiters because the dining area is a square room rather than a narrow corridor.
Last night's dinner at Thierry was great - scallops, figs wrapped in prosciutto, steak frites, calamari, chocolate souffle. Service fine and unobtrusive.
Classic French, not particulary novel but they get it just right. Best traditional French in Melbourne, better than France Soir.
A piece of Paris in Melbourne. Food - 8.5/10, Service - 4/5, Ambience - 4.5/5, TOTAL - 17/20. For mains we had the Eye fillet with fries and bernaise sauce, which was cooked to perfection. The oven roasted duck Magret, sweet potatoes & ginger confit puree, Sichuan pepper sauce was succulent and rustic. It reminded me of dining in Paris. For dessert we had the creme brulee and chocolate profiteroles. The creme brulee was not overly sweet which is how I like it. However the hard sugar on top was burnt leaving a bitter taste. The chocolate profiteroles were flawless. The choux pasty was freshly made and the ice cream filling and chocolate completed the dish!
I loved the decor of this place, cute, romantic with great food and service.
I'm a regular here, but inevitably always order the same favourite meals that never disappoint. The grilled goats cheese salad (I think off the menu at the moment) is gorgeous. Otherwise I can't go past the minute steak with frites et salade, with a glass or two of the bistro Thierry sav blanc. Top desserts are the perfect creme brûlée or chocolate soufflé with chocolate sauce... So yum! The tarte tartan is also good. For a lighter option try the $32 lunch special - great value for 2 courses and a glass of wine! One of my favourite restaurants.
Lovefrenchfood. Last night went to Bistro Thierry, have been there twice before. There was 6 of us, so we all ordered something different, and not one of us was disappointed. The mains were wonderful and the desserts were beautiful, especially the light chocolate souffle. My only complaint was the unfriendly waiter, mind you, when we went last year we took our 3 year old granddaughter with us and the waitress was very friendly and accommodating, we didn't feel that our 3 year old granddaughter wasn't welcome, mind you, she was very well behaved that night. I would recommend Bistro Thierry to anyone, but point out that the service is generally not very friendly, but I guess that's the French for you
Ooh la la. Have eaten here twice, both times with my wife - we love it. The last time we enjoyed a wonderful steak and confit du duck, great onion soup, fresh salad, great service and a great chocolate souffle to finish.
This restaurant is a tad on the exy side. I have found the service is a bit rushed but most of the time this place is terrific. You can BYO on Sunday. However a note of caution, corkage is $20 per bottle!!! so it should be a special bottle. Great food most of the time, and worth the kilojoules.
20 min cab ride back to the CBD.
French for yum. I have been going to BT for years and time and time again, it never fails to deliver. The food is amazing and the service is great too. The setting of the restaurant reminds me of being in Paris. I love the onion soup, boeuf bourguignon, bouillabaisse in the winter time and this may sound silly, but their bread is also delicious!! I love this place - i am so glad to have a little piece of Paris within minutes from my home!

If only I could see the Eiffel Tower.... My very very delayed review.
Anyway,
Beautiful restaurant.
But I guess I have to compare it to Bistro Vue (maybe later down the track when I have something to compare it to).
First of all, Bistro Thierry, boasting its 'consistent unmatched friendly service', some-what true. I can find much better service (without the boasting).
Since urbanspoon is all about food, let's talk food shall we?
What we ordered:
Wine (cannot remember what it was) & Champagne: NV BILLECART-SALMON BRUT - Mareuil-Sur-Ay - France.
To me, any glass of wine or champagne above $15 deserves to be poured at the table.
Pouring it at the bar 5 minutes before we ordered it, is very appalling to any diners who want their wine poured at the table.
An introduction and a little story about the wine is a must. Essential to every diner is a story about the wine even if they don't know a thing about wine. Now that was a negative I'm willing to compare to Bistro Vue because Bistro Vue pours wine at the table and gives a little introduction in which all diners love to hear.
French Onion Soup is famous at every French Restaurant. So I tried it and boy, yummy. I can't get enough. Tasty, strong flavors!
Then I had the escargots. I seriously can have a bucketful of it. Cooked the same way as Bistro Thierry. Red wine was tasted. So buttery and creamy. My favorite!
Le Steak was devine. Medium-rared to perfection. So tender. Charred on the outside, pink and tender on the inside. I'm definitely coming back here to have a whole one to myself.
The beauty of going out to new restaurants with family is having a taste of everything.
Beautiful plan? I think so.
Pan-fried lamb brains wasn't that great. Interesting name on the menu, not so great on taste. It was okay. I love eating brains (as disgusting as that sounds) but I don't know, there was something about this one that didn't taste as good. It wasn't too bad, but I won't be ordering it again.
Escargot is a must try!
Let's talk about dessert because I have ranted too much about the mains.
Chocolate souffle was a beauty! So smooth.
Creme Brulee was nothing special. I thought their little display of it will be outstanding, but seriously and honestly speaking, I've had better Brulee elsewhere.
Tarte Tatin wasn't too bad. I'm gonna be negative about the desserts and say that Bistro Vue does a much better job. So don't get your hopes up with the dessert at Bistro Thierry.
Other that that,
Beautifully made Escargots. Bring a bucket! Tell them to fill it up with their beautiful red wine creamy, buttery sauced Escargots.
Better than France. After returning from France and New York I must Praise Bistro Thierry for great quality bistro and better food.
French bistros just don't have the quality of ingredients that Australia now has and the team at Bistro Thierry makes the most of them. Go and Enjoy
French onion soup. You must try it - one of the best I've had!
Melt in the mouth steak & frites. Great desserts. Need I add more!
Fantastic food from entrée to desert although the service lacks personality at busier periods. The steak was magnificent as long as you avoid the pepper sauce.
Not quite Paris - the waiters are too pleasant and good humoured! A great wee bistro. Food well executed with an interesting and diverse menu. Have dined here about 8-10 times. Never been disappointed. Looking for French? Come here. Forget the place in Toorak Rd, it is not a patch on Thierry. The Steak Tartare is good, the peas with lardons delicious. Well priced.
Paris in Prahran. Dinning at Bistro Thierry is quite a theatrical experience and lots of fun. It's a bit of a caricature of a somewhat old fashioned Parisian Bistro; OTP decor, voluble French speaking waiters, lots of Gallic flourishes, but for all that, taken in the right spirit you will enjoy the attention and, most of all, the food. Ahh, the food - again a bit old fashioned and hardly cutting edge French cuisine, but all the classics are there and superbly prepared and presented. If you accept Bistro Thierry for what it is, it is well worth a visit.
Had dinner here for a birthday celebration and we had the most fantastic time. The service was impeccable which made the whole night more enjoyable. We really loved the food, especially the desserts. Will definitely be back again!
Great atmosphere and staff were extremely friendly and engaging which made dinner really enjoyable. The food was exceptional from entree to dessert. Will most definitely come back here many more times.
Had an amazing night here. Delicious food and friend service. Decor on the walls adds a beautiful vibe. Escargots is a must try, definitely my personal favorite. Only thing is better not drive to there cus their wine is too good to be refused.
We must’ve made a good impression when we arrived without a booking as the waiters were pretty nice and found us a table. The food was good especially the spinach and the soufflé. The only negative is that we were charged for bread that we didn’t order.
Love it! The foie gras is amazing. Every time a must try.
The crepes are great. Not too sweet, and the orange sauce was so good and balanced.
Despite the traditional French culinary commitment to animal cruelty, Bistro Thierry put on an exceptional vegan spread.
I commend front of house on an authentic atmosphere which left me emotionally immersed as both a part of the Bistro family and a vague inconvenience due to dietary requirements.
The food provided an array of sensory delights for the plant-based aficionado, well worthy of their premium.
An exceptional dining experience. As they say in France; "Bellissimo!"
Dined here during lunch and had the following:
- French onion soup with a large piece of crouton topped with melted gruyère; tasty but would have preferred the cheese to be melted into the soup blending in with the onions when served
- Eye fillet steak was very tender and had a nice chargrill taste, not evenly cooked with one end slightly below medium rare but was still ok; better than overcooked steak. The concentrated mushroom sauce packed a lot of flavour and paired well with the steak; and the fries were lightly salted and crispy
- Chocolate soufflé; when served the staff performed a little show by pouring the hot chocolate sauce into the soufflé; amazing to see how the soufflé rises as it was being filled. Soufflé was fluffy and inside it was soaked with the creamy rich chocolate sauce; tasted of high quality milk chocolate which was very delicious.
Overall a great meal with friendly service; the French onion soup and the steak could be even better with a little fine tuning but they were still tasty. Highlight was the chocolate soufflé, probably my favourite soufflé.
