Called in for lunch and was greeted and seated at a lovely table, The waiter was great, friendly and helpful! Good selection of food to choose from along with beers and wine. I had the barramundi which was cooked beautifully, but on the small side ! Great place well worth a visit !!!
Would have given 5 stars if not for portion sizes.
Came here on a packed Saturday night. Service was faultless. Ordered the main course scallops for hubby and I to share as an entree. At $34 you only get 6 scallops and a little rocket! Totally shocked at this outrageous pricing! Hubby had the fillet Mignon and I had the risotto. Both dishes were small. A friend had the duck and it was exquisite, but again on the small side. Chocolate pudding for dessert was a delicious way to end the meal.
The Malvern Hotel is a lovely pub - but has Toorak prices and plate sizes. When your husband has to get a Quarter Pounder on the way home from a pub meal - you know portions were not up to scratch. It was nice once but I won’t return.
Popped in for a evening meal and very surprised with the food and service both very good just shared 3 on trays but will defiantly return as the main meals coming out looked very generous and looked good
Lovely atmosphere, warm and inviting service and stunning food! Came here on Saturday night just as the restaurant part was getting busy (the bar section was already quite full). Staff were attentive, gave great recommendations. The food was amazing, we shared the special Chateau Briand which came with onion rings, green beans, the smoothest mash and delectable mushrooms. Yes, it's up there in terms of price, but the value is excellent - you don't get food like that at lower costs. Loved it.
Disappointing- have tried this place before, but decided to give it another go after a recent refurbishment. It was a Friday afternoon not very busy and it took way too long to get our food. Very basic for the price - won't be back.
We have been here a number of times and had lovely meals. The steaks are beautiful (once they we not cooked as per preference but this was fixed when bought to their attention). Very professional staff as well.
Had the $12 chicken Parma and pot of beer, was amazing value for money! One of the best chicken parmas I've had, decent service too, pretty quick serve time aswell.
Its been at least 20 years since my last visit to the Malvern Hotel in Toorak, and to be honest in those days it was never my intention to eat. Walking into the Hotel I was surprised to be greeted by a very different light and bright front bar and restaurant. The Hotel had expanded and now has a number of eating areas including a nice courtyard and enclosed veranda. The staff (all family members) make you feel very welcome and whilst attentive were not disruptive. I was pleased I had booked as to my surprise, the main dining area fill so quickly for a Wednesday. Looking around the dining room I noted that the cliental looked very well attired. Not a Fluro work shirt in sight. More so attractive women (aged 40 plus) and what looked to like a table or 2 of real estate types. The front bar looked reserved for well dressed retirees enjoying a cold beer whilst talking up the prospects of their football team (The Dees). The menu was not overly extensive but offered a nice choice of steaks and seafood options, (including the traditional Pub Parma). I selected a Salt and Pepper Prawn dish ($28.00) as a main which was tasty and generous in its portion size. It came with a salad however chips were not included. I was disappointed to find that I needed to order those separately. I do hate that.My fellow diner chose a Eye Fillet (Medium Rare) at $44.00 which was cooked to perfection and which could have been cut with a butter knife. It came with a nice side salad and chips?. I didn’t quite understand why the steaks came with all the sides included but not all others. It looked great and tasted even better according to my friend. Both meals were washed down with a very cold glass of Peroni Legera Beer which was delicious. Overall the food and service were very good. My meal was ok however the Eye Fillet may just get me back.
We go here for $12 pot and Parma. It's pretty good for my low expectations of pub food. You get a pot of beer of the month or a soft drink and a big serving of a butterfly schnitzel with ham and mozzarella cheese and topped with marinara sauce with a side of chips and salad. You have to go to the sports bar behind the bistro. Service is fast and the staff are nice. Go if you're looking for a cheap fulling eat.
What a very pleasant surprise. Dinner here was a step up for pub food as it was all made with care, detail and layered flavours. Thanks. Great.
Delicious food and generous portion.. Cozy pub to chill with friends. I love the carnivores plate.. As I am a meat lover and I get to eat all meat in one dish!
Met a group of friends here for dinner last week. Can now understand why it was voted Best Hotel in Melbourne. Lovely warm spaces, in different areas of the Hotel. The service was very friendly and efficient and the food was truly magnificent. I had the Carnivores platter for main, which was absolutely delicious, and the Chocolate Pudding for dessert, which was amazing!! Can't wait to go back, as there are so many other dishes I need to try ❤️
High quality food & service. Excellent function venue for our family get together.
Here for a team dinner so won't go through what we all ate but all 8 of us really enjoyed what we had plus the service was excellent cheers GC
Terrific Sunday Lunch. Welcoming venue with very friendly staff, diverse and interesting menu and relaxing comfortable surroundings. Food very well presented and highly rated by all of us. Will definitely revisit.
Great service and gorgeous food, expensive but good
Fillet mignon had to live up to its reputation for $44 but it did. Fish and chips best i've had. Batter perfect and flake was so fresh , not smelly. Pub itself excellent. Staff very friendly and attentive, it was a quiet saturday though.
One of the best.... I have been here for dinner a few times with my partner and the food is always fantastic! Have to recomend the filet mignon and the prawn gyoza! YUM! Service is also impressive and love their drinks selection. Espresso Martini also... YUM! So happy its just down the road from me!
Nice food but rather expensive
Pleasant surprise. From the outside it looks just like a regular pub, but inside there's a well decorated dining area. Given the quality of the food, I'd say it's well priced. It's truly a fine dining pub. I had the pork belly with perfect crackling and my husband had the carnivore, we were both silent during the meal. Our 5yrd had fish & chips from the kids menu and the portion size was just right, came with salad as well. We have been twice in as many weeks, and with friends the second time and they were equally impressed with the menu and the ambience. I'd recommend this place to families and couples.
Better than your average pub. Wonderful ambiance and attentive staff. Seems to be plenty of gluten free options available, however GF meals are not marked on the menu and it is a matter of traipsing through the meals with the waitress who constantly needs to check with the Chef. Would be helpful to have GF items marked on menu. Had the crispy salmon on beetroot salad - salmon was to die for, perfectly cooked, however the salad was very light on and the flavours just didn't blend well
Great Gastro Pub in South East. The Malvern is a great example of the modernisation of pubs in suburban Melbourne.
It has been changed over time from a classic, well located, somewhat seedy suburban pub into a useful facility for much of the local community.
1. Restaurant and Decor - The restaurant is located at the busy corner of Glenferrie Road and Malvern Road in Melbourne's south eastern suburbs. It has been well converted from an old pub to a modern gentrified eating and drinking location. The decor has been well done and allows extensive dining tables while still allowing the old fashioned drinking at the bar.
2. Service - The service was excellent with no problem with booking, taken courteously, quickly and efficiently taken to table and menus and water provided. Orders were taken well and delivery was friendly, prompt and correct. The staff can be cheeky and will take as good as they get - if you respond well.
3. Food - The food has an edginess that has some east meets west influences that work well. The food we had was traditional Aussie fare - steak and chips with a delicious sauce (that was not traditional) - to elegant and impressive display of scallops and swordfish with mussels (see photos). Desserts are also gastronomic or traditional - depending on your preference.
4. Allergies - The restaurant dealt with our challenging array of allergies - gluten, dairy, eggs and nuts is a fair array! The restaurant was aware of the issues and courteously and correctly dealt with the issues. It was not treated as a hassle and was correctly dealt with in the food.
5. Wines - The wine list is fantastic. A good variety and blend of interesting Australian wines, including some unusual ones such as the Jasper Hill Nebbiolo, and a wide variety of well chosen international wines also. Fantastic choices with recommendations from the staff (in the from of the wine list) covering a range of wines, albeit the prices are not as good as they might be!!
6. Value - For the quality and range of meals and wines provided, the prices are not low but reasonable.
Nice. Good food cooked well, relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff. The venue doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside is beautifully laid out. We shared a couple of the starters and a dessert... the serving sizes were solid, the drink list had a good variety, its was a little bit on the pricier side, but the food quality was good to justify this. I'd return for a second visit...
Always friendly, cold beers too... Enjoy the specials and steak sandwich if having lunch... Staff are friendly, good wine list. Have to book most nights now its so popular.
Try the beers. Good place, food was fantastic, service good. The guys here really know their beers and tried many on tap. Recommend giving this place a go.
Nice atmosphere although a little loud in the front room. Nicely furnished out the back too. Service was very good, meals tasty although a little overpriced for my liking.
Wow. Great service with exceptional food.
Good quality local. There should be more places like this one . The Malvern is one of a few left that serve the local community without the hinderence of porkies the food is very clean and excellent
Good stuff. Moleskins and Blundstones still present, but wine list much improved since renos/owner change
Good food, slow lunch service. Been here a dozen times as we work just around the corner. A great place to catchup after work drinks on fridays. The food here is great but try and avoid a business lunch here if you are in a hurry. The prices are directly proportional to the postcode its in, but i wont quibble about that, as the produce is equally superior too. I'd recommend the eye fillet.
Ambience - 2/3
Service 2/5
Food - 7.5/10

I've been eating at this restaurant for over 10 years and have seen a lot come and go, both staff and menu items alike. I would say at this stage, the menu is the best it's ever been, specifically the steak menu, and the staff are as good as they've ever been. Creature of habit...I'll be back
Lovely. Dined here last Friday and had a wonderful evening! We didnt have a table booked but the manager quickly found us a table. I had the rib eye and my partner had the chicken. Both meals were unbelievably tender with beautiful flavour. The meals arent cheap but they are definitely worth what you pay. Excellent selection of wines as well. Cant wait to come back.
Be a Carnivore!. Watched the AFL semi and had a great meal with partner at the same time, what a great win. (Actually sitting on the edge of restaurent & bar, management was kind enough to increase volume BUT not disturb other diners) I enjoyed the carnivores plate which was a great choice if your just not sure.
Great food great atmosphere. After reading the comment below I felt compelled to finally sign up so I could have my say.
I have been to the Malvern at least 10 over the past year and have had nothing but an exceptional evening. The staff are friendly and the food is superb, akin to as one reviewer marked something from fitzroy end. Take it from a chef with over 20 years under my belt of 5 star hotel, michelin and hatted restaurants over the word.... This place is a diamond in the rough! And I believe they just won bistro of the year, congratulations keep up the good work

Surprisingly interesting and deep wine list suits the new menu at this iconic eastern suburbs hotel. There's a slight feel of Brunswick St chic on the menu, which fills a gap for locals who have been starved of quality food for too long. Thank God someone's trying to lift the standards in Malvern!
