Review Francoise Pizza - Toorak

Lovely restaurant with delicious food. Their gnocchi is one of the best I've ever had. The staff were super friendly and the ambience was delightful without being pretentious. 100% recommend

Amazing pizzas and very good service..we have been going to this place for the last 10 years and I can vouch for the consistency in terms of taste..it's a family run business and the owners are so nice. Customers are always looked after so well..

Took my family that moved to Queensland from Melbourne back to Francoise for dinner. The food is devine , every thing is made fresh on the premises. It is so nice to have a friendly owned family business that makes you feel welcome every time we come . I welcome every one to try this restaurant, once you have been you will return.

A great dining experience with delicious food.

I had a sole fish for dinner and it was one of the tastiest fish I ever had for a while. The owner and his wife were also very friendly.

I love this restaurant. It isn’t trendy, hip or cool and the decor is outdated. I think that’s good. There has to be restaurants for people who aren’t interested in what’s fashionable and just want a relaxing place with lovely comfort food. The owners and their sons are very welcoming and their steaks, fish and pizzas never ever disappoint. I’ve been going here for years and it never changes. I love that. Their food is always so fresh, tasty and prepared with love. There’s no pretence at all with Josie and Francoise. They keep doing what they do, so dependably, and I hope this place stays the same forever.

Lovely faimly run resturant with A+ Service. Very nice to have the owner come and deliver the specials in a very proffesional and friendly mannor. The food quality was also A+ and the price was almost undervalued it was that reasonable. Will be our new local italian resturant. Exceptional all round. Thank you

I've been dining here on and off for over 18 years now. It's a family owned and run business with amazing food. I lived overseas for a decade and made an effort on every visit back to go back there and try all my favorites. I love the place!!!

There is no one ever in here so I decided to give it a shot. It was extremely pricey, and the price you pay doesn’t match the quality. Just be warned. It’s not bad pizza, it’s just way too expensive for what it is.

We popped in on a Friday night and were seated immediately. I’ve always walked past this place and wondered why it isn’t busier as it’s such a gem in the area! Each dish we had was amazing, flavours were traditional and everything super fresh. The bruschetta was one of the best I’ve had in a while! If you’re looking for great Italian food make sure you check this place out. We’ll be back for sure!

Must try - pumpkin gnocchi & bruschetta

Have been here multiple times over the years as I live close-by. Always leaves me disappointed; I understand that it's a local pizza joint, but corners are cut, and there is a distinct lack of professionalism. Lovely people though.

Saw this had 4.4 rating and had high hopes for it. Ordered pizza and a pasta. Pasta was lacking tomato for a marinara pasta but was fine. The pizza was very poor, same as dominos level and lacking any effort. Over priced and lacking quality in my opinion. Service and ambiance are fine though.

Very warm welcome (which I assume) is the owner. Happy to have a chat with the customers without being annoying. The pizza is also excellent. It would be nice to get a bit more garlic bread for your dollar.

Very very good food!
Great service!
Nicely located next to Hawksburn Village!
Perfect place for a family dinner!

Lamb mince pizza was delicious. I could customise it. The owner and his son and rest of his family were awesome. They told me about how they source their minced meat from a butcher who uses the good portions of the lamb (otherwise minced meat is usually made from just bones and fat).

The owner even shared a traditional Lebanese bread fresh from the oven (not your typical khubj); with garlic dip (very thick and not the runny kind).

Awesome experience!

The owner welcomed me back for an Falafel pizza night!

Arijit
0403195398

Weird service, silent and awkward. Decor very outdated. Pasta came out of freezer and was bland to say the least (also had to ask the table beside us for their Cracked pepper and Parmesan). Restaurant was empty when we walked in, should have clued in then.

Great family owner restaurant. This is our favourite restaurant in our local area. The staff always provide the best and most friendly service which just keeps us coming back. The food is great and presented with allot of care. I would highly recommend trying it out for yourself.

Pizza done right. Nice thin base and not full of cheap ingredients. One of the better Pizzas in the area.

Definitely not a mediterranean pizza.
Just a regular, American one. Not too bad, though, and at a decent price, considering the location.
Ok for a family dinner with kids. Nothing more

If you want traditional unpretentious and economical pizza, this is the place.
Avoid the arrogance of fratellinos and the disorganisation of trezzanino...keep it simple and you won't dissapointed.

A VERY DISAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE. Diner Review • Mar 27, 2014

I can't believe that the person who wrote that Francoise and his family 'are wonderful hosts and the food is sensational' ......and that he 'hand picks his ingredients and takes a lot pride in what he plates up' is talking about the same restaurant that I ate at last night. My veal scallopini was absolutely tasteless, it is meant to be in a white wine and cream sauce - so can someone explain to me why it was brown - looked like over thickened gravox and was totally void of taste. The veal pieces were tough and tasteless, the steamed vegies were okay. I did not complain at the time as I did not want make a fuss and upset our family get together. Our waitress, whom I believe to be Francoise's wife, appeared very unenthusiastic about serving tables, she sat at a table near the kitchen for a lot of the night and my son literally had to go and get her twice.
The menu referred to a separate pizza menu which we weren't given until we asked for it.
There is no wine list - just a white and a red which we were told were 'boutique wines'; if you are not going to provide a range of wines it is probably a bit rich to ask $10 per bottle corkage - ?
Whilst I believe Urbanspoon provides a great service, this experience has taught me that you can't place too much credence on it. We changed our venue last night based on Urbanspoon's review of this restaurant and were all very disappointed; I have no idea how it rated 94%. As suggested by another reviewer on this site, one can only think that they provided it themselves or friends and family members did.
On the positive side, their pizzas were very nice, the garlic/cheese bread was lovely, so maybe those ratings were from people who have had pizza.

Terrible, terrible, terrible service. We knew it was bad when we were asked what drinks we'd but hadn't seen a drinks menu so asked for one & they said they didn't have one. Older female waitress was less than enthusiastic to serve us. We caught her sitting down at a table having a break several times during the 2hrs we were there. We had to go up to her to ask her to come over so we could order more drinks & then ask for the bill. Food was just ok. Veal scallopini came with a gravy sauce instead of a cream sauce and meat was beyond bland! Don't waste your time. It's overrated. Not sure how it's rated at 94%.

Dining at this restaurant is a wonderful experience. Francoise and his family are wonderful hosts and the food is sensational - he handpicks his ingredients and takes a lot of pride in what he plates up. We have been going there for several years and have loved it on every occasion. The dips are to die for and so are his pizzas!

Old people's pizza. I have no complaints with the quality of Francoise's pizza. My beef is the prices. I stopped in for a small capricciosa and a glass of house red wine. The pizza was good, with tonnes of anchovies, mushrooms and black olives. I like spicy flavours, and I got into the habit of ordering pungent pizzas years ago because when we'd have a batch at places where I worked, people would leave mine alone if it had toppings like salty, oily fish. The crust has a crisp bottom layer, it's crackery at the outer edges, but has a bit of white-flour sponginess where it interfaces with the sauce. All in all, as good as anything I've had on Lygon Street.

The problem is, this small pizza -- maybe 20 cm across -- cost me $15. Medium pizzas start at $20. A glass of the un-named house shiraz, which had some good fruit to it, was $9. There was no price on the table tent spruiking it, or I wouldn't have ordered something so costly. House wine ought to be more like $5 or $6, IMHO. This place attracts a grey-haired, Hawksburn-rich clientele, based on what I saw when I was there, so the pricing seems to be set at their level.

What was more interesting than the pizzas were the puffy white objects I saw coming out on plates. When the owner stopped by my table, I asked him what they were. Turns out Francoise bakes its own pitas, and they look like pillows when they come out of the oven. They have a number of Turkish-type dishes such as dips and kebabs that go along with the pitas. But again, the kebab plate costs $30. Obviously not aiming at the late-night, half-drunk kebab crowd with that.

This place is foul, honestly I don't know how they have so many votes, the pizza was crap and the place is boring, the owners were also very rude! Will never be back especially when there are so many great places on Malvern rd

96%like this place? Seriously?. My partner and I went here for dinner on a Friday night and what a strange place.... it felt like we had been transported back to the early 90's with the décor, paintings, interior.... not really the best vibe.

The food was ok, yet nothing to write home about. We had a pizza and a chicken dish and the chicken was very tough, and they only supplied a butter knife to cut the chicken which was near impossible to cut.

The pizzas are almost all ham based; if you don't like ham you have salami or dry chicken as an option; so my partner had the pizza covered in dry shards of ham as there really wasn't any choice. It was the cheap shoulder ham too which was really old fashioned, unhealthy and cheap.

Drinks came in a can or bottle if you wanted which was great - the bill came to $55 for two, my meal was dry chicken and his shoulder ham pizza, and we were seated in an empty restaurant (we should have known!)

The owners were nice, yet they seemed to be a bit over it all and they had 3 younger boys working there which injected some youth into a very old fashioned establishment. If you want bright and happy don't go here, if you want somewhere very quiet, bland and a bit boring to chill out this is your place.

Fantastic pizza! Gnocchi and steak to die for!!! Definitely will be coming back!

Italian-Aussie Compromise. This is not your crappy cheap and nasty Pizza. But it's also not your authentic wood fired oven pizza. What this is is a wonderful compromise between the two. Ingredients you can see and taste that'll have you coming back. I usually get mine take-away and numerous friends always request we get a Francoise Pizza before sitting down to watch the game on TV. That speaks for itself. Ask for garlic and chili as extra toppings. Yum!

Great pizzas! Have become a weekly regular at this place and have to say I plan to continue!

Really good, pizza is delicious with decent amount of toppings, and very reasonably priced. It's a family affair, so nice friendly atmosphere.

Delicious!. Had the best home made gnocci..
Will be back for more :)

Nope. This is a prime example of how sometimes Urbanspoon votes miss the mark. I honestly think the owners must have employed all of their family and friends to hit like 71 times, either that or the folk over south of the Yarra need a solid lesson in what constitutes good pizza. I felt like I had stepped back into the 90’s when I walked in this restaurant, and not in an ironic way. The pizza tasted like McCain’s. The waitress wanted to be anywhere else. There is not much more I can say about this.

Consistently best pizzas .... We have been having pizzas (and pasta) at / from francoise since 7 years and haven't found any other pizza place delivering such great pizzas. It's a family run restaurant and Owner and his son make pizzas quite passionately. The base is the same all the time, not too thick not too thin, fresh ingredients. Mexican is my fav but falafel pizza (yes unusual) is great too for vegetarians. We have recently moved out of Melbourne and this pizza is amongst the things missed dearly. We used to drive 20 mins each way for the pizzas when we moved to a different suburb. Take away or eat there, we have celebrated important family occasions there and it has always been great. BEST PIZZA BY FAR...sad they dont have any branches

Steak, Sole or even a Pasta. This is a gem for people looking for very good food without blasting music. Dinner with the family or something more quiet, off the beaten track. It's a fine pizza takeaway at the front, which disguises an intimate? restaurant at the back.

I'm torn between choosing the porterhouse steak or lemon sole and the pasta dishes are balanced & tasty. If you are looking for a consistently good steak (or fish) to savour with a glass of wine, I expect you'll visit more than once. There's 2 or 3 veggie decent dishes also.

Licensed & BYO. Good prices.
