Review Thai At Toorak - Toorak

Friendly staff and tasty food with great portion. Definitely one of the best Thai restaurants in Melbourne!

Welcome Thai has been around for years and I'm assuming through a few changes of hands. I've been here a few times and the food is always delicious. Pictured here is the Chicken Satay that I had for entree, and the Chicken Fried Rice for the main meal. Both were very good. I would say the service was a little slow. They, like many other places, annoyingly concentrate on take out orders first, and now that Uber Eats exists, this just adds to the backlog of orders to get out. Therefore, if you're sitting at the restaurant, you end up waiting much longer than usual while they fulfil those first. Frustrating, but as long as you're not in a rush, then I guess there's more time to chat with your friends. The decor is simple but pretty and there's a lot of street parking outside so usually pretty easy to get a parking space. Overall, I would come here again and recommend it to anyone looking for a good Thai meal out. You can bring the kids or just have dinner for two.

Really friendly staff, food was delicious and it came out quickly. Tastefully decorated. I recommend the Thai beer! Good bang for your buck. ( and they do take away)

The most amazing Thai food 10/10. The pad Thai (vego and meat) is amazing along with the vego spring rolls and curry puffs. I can’t wait to be back for more!!!

Cosy, bookings not necessary. Delicious food.

Went here Sunday night. Ordered several dishes. The Gang Karee / Yellow curry was very poor quality chicken thigh that had the texture and taste of hard rubber and also did not taste like it was blended with the sauce at all. Barely ate any of this dish and advised the waitress of this. No apology given and waitress proceeds to tell the chef. Upon payment still charged full price for a horrible dish that was mostly uneaten. Other dishes were mediocre. No courtesy or care about the food or customers in this place. Overall one star experience. Not recommended.

A true delight with number of exceptionally delicious offerings. Definitely try the satay chicken & golden basket. Only knock is that at peak times the kitchen can be slow but you'll find it's worth the wait!

Great flavour - loved the Pad Thai, highly recommended! We ordered takeaway and it arrived hot and quickly! Only feedback would be the amount of onion in the Massaman curry and the stir-frys - will make sure we request little to no onion next time. Will definitely order again !

Every time we have ordered food, it has been awesome. In fact, this eatery is the reason we started exploring other than our usual places and we have mostly been fortunate.

Their Value meal for two is perfect consisting of Chicken Pad Thai, Chicken Red Curry, Rice and Roti.

Love IT!!

This review is representative of an ubereats order
Given that it was a delivery, I was very happy with the quality of this dish. It was piping hot when it arrived at my place. I ordered the pineapple fried rice.

The good parts of the fried rice:
1. Generous amounts of pineapple chunks, cashew nuts and carrots intertwined within the fried rice. The pineapple is delicious!
2. They provided a lemon wedge also for added flavour

What I wish there was more of:
1. I wish there was a bit more seasoning in the rice.
2. The prawns were not as yummy as I would have hoped.

Having said that, I still enjoyed my meal and would definitely reorder!!
Food ❤️❤️
When I was in Toorak village I ordered some thai food items from this place, the taste and quality is good 💕

Ordered take away fried rice. Received it significantly burnt. Not sure how a restaurant would allow this to be served.

Ordered 🍚: chicken in pandan leaf, pad Thai seafood, duck curry and coconut rice

LIT! 🔥: Pad Thai was definitely the highlight of all the other dishes. They were generous on the portion size, perfect balance of sweet and sour and provided a side of crushed peanuts you can add to your own liking.
The chicken pandan was tender and juicy too.
Rice was very fragrant in the coconut scent compared to other coconut rice I’ve tried.
Customer service was good.

NOT LIT 🙃: the curry was very watery and didn’t have any viscosity. Also, there was inadequate duck meat.

Definitely a decent Thai place in toorak to check out. thanks for having us! X

Came here as a Zomato Gold member on a first visit.

Service:
The girl server and the lady at the cashier is incredibly friendly, and genuinely friendly too, which was nice.
From the first greet until paying to leave, I commend the restaurant for this, it was great experience.

Food:
Ordered entree and two mains. The chicken pandan entree was tasty, also the Beef Grapow and Red Curry is delicious as well.
So the food was great.

Pricing:
It was good pricing regardless the Zomato Gold.

Conclusion:
It's a nice friendly restaurant with good food on a good affordable price.
Great place to come and have quick lunch or dinner.

SERVICE: 3.5/5
A friendly welcome when we arrived and the food took no time to come out.

FOOD: 4/5
Didn't have any expectations prior to going but was pleasantly surprised when the food hit the table. They were presented quite nicely and generous portion size especially for Thai standards.

I had a seafood pad Thai which had a reasonable amount of seafood, not too much variety through it though. Plenty of noodles which I thought wouldn't be finished but it was delicious so polished it all up.

My friend had a caramelised pork dish with slaw and it looked amazing. Again a big portion and she was very happy with it. I wouldn't mind coming back to try other dishes when next in the area.

DECOR & AMBIENCE: 3.5/5
The entry is a little hard to find. Other than the lightbox there is no other signage, just a door that leads up a steep flight of stairs to bring you to the restaurant door on the left. The dining room was lovely and clean when we were there. It was a Wednesday night and we were there from 6pm-7:30pm, no other patrons the entire time. The food delivery drivers were coming in every 15mins so the locals know the secret! Comfortable seating and I particularly love the window seating overlooking Toorak Road from above.

KID FRIENDLY: The dining area has ample room and can be considered kid friendly however there is that steep flight of stairs to get past first.

We visited for the third time with another couple and made use of our entertainment book voucher. I really can't understand why the place seems to be always empty. Given the number of deliveroo people traipsing up and down the stairs they seem to do a roaring trade in takeaway so that must be how they stay in business. Do your self a favour and actually come in to the restaurant as the decor is actually quite fancy and the food is delicious

Update
We were invited to Thai @ Toorak last night a good 18 months from our last visit. I’m pleased to report the food is as authentic as ever which rich quality sauces the key to fantastic flavour in every dish.

We obviously don’t deviate from a winning formula (though unintentional) as we inadvertently ordered the exact same dishes as last time. Importantly though they were all delicious and consistency is key. There’s nothing worse than having a good experience and then recommending to friends and them experiencing something different so I was really happy to see the high standards being maintained.

The pad Thai for me was absolutely stellar. I haven’t had such a yummy version of that dish since I did a cooking class in Bangkok. Definitely a must order but I doubt you could go wrong with anything

Original review
As with most Asian restaurants there's lots of variety and quite a few specials on the menu. We tend to stick with the classics here, delicious pad thai, massamum curry, lots of roti bread, fragrant coconut rice and chicken satay. Everything was scrumptious and we will definitely be back
Megan S
Got takeaway via Deliveroo and was very impressed. Massaman beef - meat was lovely and tender. Both the curry and Chicken pad Thai had great flavours, the curry was a little on the zingy side for a massaman. Vegetarian spring rolls and roti bread were still nice and crispy when they reached us.

Best Thai food I've had in ages! The service and atmosphere were also fantastic. Our host Peter was friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be back!

Melbourne is filled with Thai restaurants but Thai @ Toorak manages to stand out from the crowd. Tucked away, up a flight of stairs from Toorak's bustling Toorak Road, the restaurant rewards those who venture in.
Savvy And Lifestyle
I was lucky enough to be invited in. Located in the heart of Toorak on Toorak road, presents this wonderful authentic Thai restaurant, just take a glance outside their window seats and you can see the sweeping views of Toorak.
Very impressed with the service the owner Peter was very humble and very knowledgeable about his Thai food, he went through a lot of foods on the menu to the chef specials. I must say the customer service was outstanding I was getting checked on frequently to ensure everything is ok and how the food was going. Started with the chicken satay skewers which were accompanied by a nice sweet side sauce along with peanut satay smothered all over the skewers. The peanut sauce was delicious I wanted to lick my plate. Out came the mains (in a timely manner) had the Thai beef salad which was very nourishing and bursting full of flavours, from the fish sauce to lemon grass and more herbs it just tasted so fresh, mind you it had a bit of a kick to it. Lastly my favourite Thai dish ever now.. was the red duck curry in a lychee sauce with pineapple. Seriously where can you find lychee curry didn't think this flavour combination existed. This is what I loved about the menu they offered an extensive range it's seriously not your typical Aussie Thai food this place has more to it and can do it right. Definitely was (Thai-tastic) for me. I would be back and I'll definitely be back for that red duck curry. Thank you for inviting me in.

Thai @ Toorak, a hidden restaurant up the stairs from Toorak Road. It was hard to find initially but if you wait long enough you’ll see a deliveroo driver or two on their way back in to collect their orders. Inside is a quiet oasis with pleasant background music and some really interesting zones of decorating.

Our host Peter told us the chef hails from northern Thailand and likes to rotate some of his authentic dishes from home through the menu.

We started with the mixed entree,
Spring rolls, (packed full of veggies with a lovely crunchy shell), Curry puffs (with a super flakey pasty and soft center), Fish cakes my favorite of this mix (with a great texture with a lovely chilli hit), Chicken pendang (lovely bbq’d morsels), Chicken Satay (great flavour) and the most amazing Prawn crackers I have ever had, (peppery and spicy). Warning you can not stop at one.

We could hear the woks banging in the kitchen and were getting excited over what was about to arrive.

We ordered the recommended Massaman curry, this thick rich curry had a spicy depth of flavour I can only attribute its authenticity, it worked well with the potatoes and sweet potatoes and plenty of peanuts.

We also ordered the signature Ginger fish which is somewhat of a signature dish. This deep fried whole barramundi was impressive to look at, a very generous serving, had a fragrant smack of Thai herbs and was just delicious to eat. The barramundi was crunchy on the outside, succulent on the inside and oh so flavorsome, the shredded ginger, chilli, lemongrass, leek, vegies and cashew topping was a winning combo. For a different dimension of heat ie to dial it up, I add a small amount of the spicy dressing. My lips were a tingling....My taste buds were in heaven.

Thai @ Toorak will be launching a lunchtime seating on Saturdays and Sundays starting late November and this will include a free flow lunch option for unlimited beer, wines and Aperol spritz with your meal... sounds like perfect timing for summer (or even my birthday!!!).

Peter & Joy thanks for inviting us in.

Really had a good experience bringing my clients for dinner. Was greeted by the lovely host Joy and she was so hands on and attentive. The service from the rest of the team was first class the the fish was worth it! Definitely coming back again and will bring my friends and family in the future. It is not your typical restaurant. This one is very authentic!! Best Thai restaurant in town and that is saying something!!!

This hidden place is absolutely great place for Thai food as it's at second floor on Toorak road! The atmosphere is very private and great. The food is very delicious and fast.Wouldnt mind coming back here again!
The Merlion
First experience with them , take out . Ordered pineapple rice .. not quite what i have expected. It was basically fried rice with a couple of pineapple chucks thrown into it. Quite a disappointment. If you have had pineapple rice in Thailand or in other Asian countries, you would be able to tell the difference.
Mel
Consistent everytime. The restaurant is always empty but take away is a treat! Their pad thai is one of the best I've eaten and their red curry is the perfect balance between hot and sweet. It's definitely the go to.
Holly Rogers
Myself and some colleagues ventured here for dinner and asked them to bring out a selection of treats. Pete, Joy and the kitchen team did not disappoint.
The red duck curry was a special winner for me, as a pineapple lover I was delighted that they added that extra towards the flavour.
For the vegetarians and vegans out there the food did not disappoint, the vego massaman was surprisingly another favourite of mine. Being a meat eater it is not often I would put a dish like this above a beef stir fry.
Do yourself a favour if you are hungry, add the pad Thai into the mix as well.
I Will be back.

We originally ordered delivery from here and thoroughly enjoyed it. So we decided to pop into the restaurant one night. Despite the simple decor and an upstairs venue, the authentic flavourful delicious food was amazing. Extensive menu. Loved the Tom yum soup and whole steamed fish. BYO. Loved!

If I could rate it a zero I would. Yuck. This is not how Thai food should taste. Every item but the rice was horrible. What a waste of $50. Will never order from here again. Yucky
Melbourne Food Freak
I will never order food from them ever again. I ended up had to throw half of the food out. The beef stir fry had 2/3 of capsicum in the container, and the rest was onion and shallots...only 7pieces of beef slices in it. Pad thai tasted okay to be honest. The satay chicken skewers were sooooo bland and dry, could hardly see/taste the sauce. It's more like a persian BBQ😂 Will not recommend them to anyone!

Tonight, we choose Thai@Toorak for the first time for dinner after reading raving reviews but unfortunately our Thai food experience at this restaurant was below par. We ordered patented soups - Tom Kha (which was too sweet) and Tom Yum which was not authentic in taste. For the main course (ordered from the Chef's Special) my wife ordered Pad Cha, seafood stir fry on a hot plate (fish and veggies were floating in sauce and quite tasteless to be honest); you would expect sizzling food to be dry, full of spice and taste (it lacked flavor that we had to add salt and pepper). I tried the Labgai (minced chicken) - again this was sweet, quite bland and watery! We love Thai food but unfortunately we both didn't like our food at all and left more than half on our plates; hence, a very poor score. After such poor tasting starter and main course, we didn't have the guts or the stomach to try their dessertsI! We wouldn't recommend this Thai food restaurant to anybody; we have eaten so much tasty Thai food in Victoria (in Boronia, Vermont, Richmond etc)...

This place was terrific tonight. I love Thai food but being allergic to fish and seafood means I can't have any of the fishy sauces - and half the time nobody gets what that means (been served my fair share of fish sauce 😩)

Here they listened, made sure the spring rolls were safe and they made the BEST chilli cashew chicken ever.

It was so good. So spicy and sweet and teamed with the coconut rice with a hint of lemongrass it was great.

Chicken Pad Se Ew was really flavourful too (needed more veg though) so will ask next time but wow it arrived hot and was honestly fantastic.

Wow! What a fabulous restaurant. We don't do spicy food but our host recommended and we are so thankful, so we went back again! We have never had such tasty and delicious fried rice, dessert was just to die for. A lovely ambience & timely service of food 😃 and Joy and all staff are so friendly and helpful. Couldnt recommend more highly, a must try you won't be dissapointed😀

When I came here with a friend, everything seemed fine. Decent food (maybe a little pricey), nice setting overlooking Toorak Road and the food was nice.

Then we found a piece of broken plate in the fried rice we had ordered. The restaurant was apologetic and we didn't have to pay for our food, but that is simply unacceptable.

Don't waste your money.

First time here today with my family. Spacious, elegant, airy, clean and modern.
Very nice, friendly, helpful staff.
Delicious dishes. The Pla Lui Suan (deep fried fish with lemongrass, coriander, shallots in Thai dressing) was spectacularly presented, lavished generously with complex garnishings. Ordered three desserts to try out - banana fritters, mango sticky rice + coconut ice cream and taro custard - YUMMY and different.
Thank you!

Great food and service! There is a great selection of vegetarian dishes that are freshly prepared and tasty. Joy and her brother always provide a fantastic meal.

You will pay a few dollars more than most Thai but to be fair it has more to do with the area. Offering a good range of traditional thai dishes. Found the staff delivered excellent customer service.

Food Quality: The pandan is a small dish, but it is delicious simplicity. They get it nicely crispy, succulent and the banana leaf adds a light BBQ infusion to the chicken. The light sweet sauce makes a good compliment.

We also had seafood pad Thai, crispy skinned roast duck with penang sauce and slow cooked Thai beef rib with herb salad. The flavours of the pad Thai and beef rib are fantastic here; mixing authentic salty fishy Thai sauce with a bit of sweetness, good heat and uplifting garden fresh Thai herbs with subtle citrus and crispy fried shallots and nuts. The beef was succulent and easy to eat. The pad Thai was refreshingly styled as a drier fried noodle dish with a subtle smokey flavour.

The penang sauce on the duck was velvety, intense and complex. The sweet coconut was strong, but backed up with saltiness and then an overarching smooth sour finish. It came with crispy fried Thai basil on top which was nice, however the duck itself was a bit tough and the skin wasn't crispy.

1.5/2

Value: The serves are a little precious here. In particular the pandan was small. $40 pp was a little steep for Thai food as well.

.5/1

Service: The staff here are very relaxed and genuinely friendly. They are a little absent, but they have the service elements in play. They are particularly unobtrusive, which would actually make this ideal for a quiet date.

1/1

Venue: Lighting is too bright and though they've tried with the appointments, the walls are just typical painted plasterboard. The elevator music also gets a little irritating. There's an air of iHop about the presentation, with plastic menus, the typical paper napkins and the ubiquitous one sheet folded cardboard drinks menu. The carpet is hard wearing commercial grade, adding to the sense of a converted office space. The seating is comfortable, though it reminds me of a 3.5 star hotel lobby.

.5/1

I am a regular diner at Thai@Toorak along with both my parents and my son. We dine there on average weekly and it never fails to impress with the most beautiful Northern Thai dishes that I love, but also the gentle and unobtrusive service.
Barramundi Ginger, stuffed breast of chicken and Thai sausage are some of the signature dishes that I wholeheartedly recommend.
To tell that my meal was bad it's not to tell anything! !
My meat was as tough as rubber!
It's definitely was cooked a few days ago and rehited today !
This place should be closed for ever!
Very disappointed
Anne Na
Empty restaurant because all of the food has clearly been reheated. You cannot reheat prawns- it is unsafe and they are rubbery. The chicken satay skewers were disgustingly stringy and tough. It was like the food was days old! It's not hard to cook fresh. They should reconsider the corners they're cutting especially when there are three lazy chefs in the kitchen. What a waste of money!
Erin Jameson
When this place first came to the Village, I rejoiced because the food was so fresh and flavours sublime. It reminded me of the quality Thai you get in Sydney (I haven't been to Thailand, so Sydney's reputable Thai food is my only comparison). However, I'm sad to say that the last three times have been extremely disappointing. I don't know how this has happened, but last night, we were given over cooked, rubbery fish cakes (which were one succulent and popping with flavour), the soup was sickly sweet and the Pad Thai had absolutely no flavour - nine - and a couple of tiny bits of chicken. Sorry, but three times bitten, forever shy.

My husband took me for a very romantic Valentine's Day dinner. We were seated in the best seat of the restaurant overlooking Toorak road. Good service. Chicken skewers were raw inside so we sent them back. They recooked them for us. Our main dishes were chicken Pad grapow which was tasteless and swimming in water.. And my husband had the Pad see ewe beef which was simply average. The main dining area is very spacious with beautiful chandeliers but shame the food didn't have the same impact.

Ordered delivery from here tonight. It took around an hour to arrive from order placement. The Pad See Ew was amazing! Spring rolls didn't travel well. Satay chicken was OK. The coconut rice and broccoli in oyster sauce was a favourite. I will definitely order from here again.

Authentic Thai Food

Amazing and beautiful food, lovely atmosphere.

I have been here numerous times and keep forgetting to review it. The food is so flavour some and fresh to the palate l can't wait to go back. I love Pla Lui suan, Deep fried Pork Shank and Grapao Balck eggs. The food was so amazing and authentic. Also, the location is easy to find. Pricing on both food and drinks very reasonable. I really enjoy. I will go back again.

The best Thai I have had in a long time. The squid salad was very fresh and the squid was very tender. I don't usually like ginger, but the steamed barramundi was beatiful. The Pad Grapow with Crispy Pork was also very good. Will definitely be back to try their other dishes.
Grislada Chansawang
Great Authentic Thai food my favourite dish is Pla Lui Suan whole fried barramundi come with herb dressing tasty!! Don't miss deep fried pork shank
Siriyada Buaphat
This is a beautiful Thai place with the real Thai taste. I love the Pork Spring Roll. It is so tasty. The Deed Fired Pork Shank and the Barramundi with Chilli Paste are killing. Dining at Thai@Toorak simply reminds me of Bangkok.

Tonight is my first time here, all foods and services very fantastic include very nice decoration. As we order whole fish and pork shank, which turn out absolutely good plus we love their side sauce.

I hope to try other dishes next times, as my friend recommend on green curry with chicken stuff.

I had an Entertainment Book voucher for Thai @ Toorak, so decided to get takeaway one Friday night. The service as far as I experienced it (ordering over the phone, and picking up and paying at the restaurant) was very good, and there is also a 10% discount for your first takeaway order which is a nice bonus. I would come back to dine in here as the decor looked smart, modern, and peaceful. The stir fry with red curry sauce and coconut rice that I had was delicious, as was the pad thai. Will be back when I'm in the area again!
Megan De Souza
Unfortunately though the food looked good the beef massaman was inedible due to the tough fatty meat used. This might have been excused but when this was raised with staff they insisted it is slow cooked and that's how people like it. They offered a 20% discount, but only on that dish. Given the high prices (for Thai food) the standard should have been a lot higher. We will not be returning.
James Heath
Amazing! Service 10/10, ambience 10/10 food ........ Out of this world!!

We were across town in Toorak for a gig, and wanted dinner before and Thai @ Toorak was conveniently located with a good score on Urbanspoon, so we decided to check it out. We found the entrance and headed up the stairs from ground level into glitzy and ground dining room, we certainly weren't in Footscray anymore!
LJ
It was our first dinning experience at Thai @ Toorak. First impressions were good. The decor was classy, especially the touch of chandeliers on the ceilings and walls. Staff were friendly and always checking in with us. We ordered money bags as an entrée and noticed by our second bite they weren't cooked through and were frozen. We complained to the waiter and were cooked a fresh batch with an extra 2 springrolls. For our main we shared pad thai with beef. The flavor of the sauce was good but average for a signature Thai dish. We rated it a 6 out of 10. Overall, service was good but I'm not sure we would be coming back.

Lovely Thai Restuarant. I came from the city and stop in Toorak. By chance I found this new establish Thai restaurant near Commonwealth Bank.
My wife and I had Beef Stewed slow cook stir fry with Hoisin Sauce and Red Duck Curry. Happy and Happy , our first time trying this new Thai restaurant. We will come back again and recommend friends. We both love its atmosphere with a little bit of Luxurious decors. Love their Chandeliers as well.
