Review The Bush Hotel - Toorak

Thomas Bell
The food was great. Friday night $20 fish and chips can’t be beat. Good selection of beers on tap too. However, they charged us $55 for the bottle of wine in the photo, which retails for $8.99 and tasted pretty bad. If you come here, avoid the wine at all costs due to the huge markup

Best Happy hour in town! Love their steaks and shoestring flies!!! Clean place and friendly staffs as well.

Terrific pub grub and the steaks on steak night are a bargain. The back dining area has a good atmosphere and the staff are friendly and well trained. Sadly the wine list probably has the most outrageous mark-ups in Melbourne. Charging $96 for a Wild Duck Creek Shiraz that retails for $27 and the pub would buy wholesale for well under $20 is appalling. Stick to the beer. Sad for a decent place.

Great atmosphere, limited menu with not many choices & disappointed to not be able to order a coffee or tea. My reply to owners comments:- I attended Bush inn hotel in Toorak & I am not confused with the location. We asked for coffee was told machine is not working, asked for tea & was told we don’t serve. Happy to chat further about this if you give me a name of a person to phone.

The Negroni was better than most cocktail bars! With one big ice cube and Four Pillars Spiced Negroni gin. Steak was perfectly medium rare, the barramundi was delightful, and the salads we’re totally worth eating, not just decoration. Make sure you ask for the specials.

Great local hangout in Hawksburn. Low key and relaxed. Good and friendly service. Daily Happy Hour 6-7 with $5 house wine (sav blanc and Shiraz are great). Wednesday night steaks 300 gram porterhouse $25. Great food and a great deal. Good food. Higher recommended.

Thankyou to the Bush Hotel 🏨 for such a wonderful night. Excellent food and drinks backed by extra friendly staff 👌

Came in for lunch and sat there for over ten minutes after being seated and given a menu, made eye contact with multiple employees but no one ever acknowledged me, so I left. There were only two other customers in the pub and they had already received their food so it wasn't because they were busy working.

This place has the potential to be so much better! The service is great. The food is... okay. Filling at least. Disappointing to pay for extra vegetables to offset a carb heavy dish and get sweet potato and overly roasted green something (could have been asparagus, could have been broccolini). $38 for an okay steak is highway robbery. Hoping the food can adjust to meet the needs of the locals otherwise it will end up like all the previous iterations of the Bush Inn.

This is a lovely local pub. Trendy, clean yet cozy interior. Huge windows that open onto the street in summer, as warm moody lightning through winter. Great place for dinners, Sunday boozy lunches or even pre drinks before you go out. The food is pub food, nothing fancy, just the way you want your pub meal. Staff are always fantastic.

Decent pub meal. Came for $25 steak night (which is kinda expensive). You got proper steak, cooked well. I had the ribs which for $33 was a very good price - considering how expensive it normally is you got a really good sized serving. They have a great selection of beers on tap, nice wine and hard to fine whiskey. definitely more gastro than pub but it’s good to see the steak has stayed the same even though it’s in a new guise.

Attended a private function recently, the bar was nice and clean and a good variety of beers.<br/><br/>I would like to have spent more time there, would like to come back and experience the night life.

Arrived and was waiting to be seated. Not very busy. We were then seated and were not advised we need to order at the bar. Food was cold and service very average. Ordered chicken burger and chips. Chips were cold. Chocolate brownie was hard and inedible. Was sick 4 hours later.
DT
Very average pub . Nothing to fault but no greats mentions either . Good atmos, friendly staff and decent place to have some drinks . Average food .

Food: great pub food that I enjoy!!! it’s our local, so we have tried heaps of the menu and would solidly rate 8.5/9 for all items across the board. Not your average pub feed real quality.<br/><br/>Service: attentive, no complaints.<br/><br/>Ambiance. Nice finishings. I’m very comfortable here. Like I said not your average pub. I HATE PUBS USUALLY! <br/><br/>Try the live music on Sundays creates a really nice atmosphere..... and they do specials each night- (Wednesday-Parma etc etc) <br/><br/>QB👸🏼

This place serves consistently good food. I have had delivery a few times as I haven't wanted to cook and it always arrives as if it would if you were dining in. <br/><br/>The chicken Parma was a huge serve; all Breast chicken and quality ingredients. <br/><br/>The steak was terrific too but they forgot a sauce so it was a bit bland; the popcorn chicken we only got 4 tiny pieces so for the $15 that was a rip off! Tasty so would love more than 4 tiny pieces. <br/><br/>Their side salads are some of the best in the area. Love the radish and salad greens they use! So tasty.

Friendly service, descent waiting time for food, huge portion, average pub food.<br/>Been here twice ; fish batter was too thick, burger 🍔 pretty good, steak of a descent cut. <br/>A pretty laid back place, corner pub, hang out place. No fancy dress up needed

Mad that you couldn't get a seat at 505? After something a bit more causal? Want the beer AND the sport? Maybe this is the place for you: The Bush Inn. It's the perfect neighborhood sports bar. It feels right here, an absolute classic.<br/><br/>Logic would dictate that if the vibe here is so right that the food would be somewhat lacking. This is true but it's also just some good pub food to chow down on. I often get the parma, and every time I walk past I think about the Wednesday chicken special. Parma is a large one, with lots of sauce and cheese. I don't usually go the ham on the parma but this one I did.<br/><br/>Basketball is often on the screens in the outdoor smoking area, sometimes on bigger screens inside. Staff are so helpful that they will even change the channel if nobodys watching it. Have never watched a full game here, but have been introduced to football, greyhound racing and other sports I never would have considered.
Cameron Knight
Absolutely disgusting. Ordered a schnitzel and chips and a Parma and chips along with a couple of drinks. We received a total of 6 chips in each plate. The owners need to be embarrassed to be serving this shit up. If I needed to pay an extra couple of dollars for some extra chips then I would have. Have just on a worksite nearby and definitely will never be back. I would like to give a 0.0 but I can't.
Geoff
Just finished the worst traditional roast ever!<br/>I need to learn. <br/>Grisly,, fatty, indigestible meat. Vegetables OK. <br/>As a local I keep coming here spasmodically, when I can't be bothered to "dress out". Last time it was dried out Parma, essentially inedible. Time before a pie that wasn't too bad, but essentially nothing of consequence with it. <br/>Bar staff are good, friendly. But the place is a food disaster. I am done, done, done! And seriously tee'd off. <br/>Geoff <br/><br/>

Dropped by on a Wednesday night for their $15 steak special. Once you get pass the surroundings, the meal was a great value! It is a regular pub after all. Nothing pretentious or fancy, but the porterhouse was cooked well, perfect amount of pinkness and char. Staff were friendly.
Dam Burger
Came here for $15 Parma on Monday night. It's a TAB! A bit smokey inside from people smoking just outside. But the Parma was excellent for $15 and the Shiraz from mclarenvale was only$5!!! Very good wine although the next glass was $8!!!! But still awesome value if you can get past the surroundings.

Big fan of this griup of restaurants. Great atmosphere. Lovely staff. I shared the lamb shoulder with my bro and it melted.. absolutely stunning. Great wine list (i dont drink). Will definitely be back for more!!
Johan Snyman
My wife's seafood linguini had hardly any seafood. All the mussel shells were empty. My linguini was acceptable. Chocolate fondant was a dry cupcake. Megan, our waitress was phenomenal. A pity the chef let her down. Sadly, I don't think we will be back.
Daniel
I love dropping in on a weeknight just after work. The atmosphere is perfect for a quiet dinner for two. The staff preempt your needs and the food is like a loving hug after a long day in the cold and rain. <br/>Since it was the Bush Inn it has been synonymous with excellent steak but a change in name and decor did not mean a change in quality. Definitely a place to enjoy. <br/>If it was fully booked it could be quite an overbearing atmosphere but so far of the dozen times I've been here, it's always been just perfect.
Stephen
The cosy atmosphere and lovey decor make for a comfortable eating environment. The food was very enjoyable and the wine list was good. The staff are attentive without being overwhelming and they make great coffee . Good location for a casual weekend lunch or dinner .
JaySny
This rating was entirely because of the wonderful waitress who served us. She was fantastic! A pity the chef let her down. Seafood pasta had barely any seafood, the muscle shells on the plate were all empty when my food arrived, choc fondant was a dry cupcake. Positives were a great lamb gnocchi and very good berry sorbet accompanying the fondant. Delicious wine and ports. Won't be back sadly.
Food
An expensive and regrettable mistake....... We had similar experience to Michael K. The chicken Parmigianas were awful. The crust of thick breadcrumbs cooked to the point where they were a deep brown, almost burned colour, matched the dry overcooked chicken inside. Unfortunately our table ordered three! The service was slow - only two other tables had customers yet it took ages for our Parmas and steak to arrive. At $120 for the food, two soft drinks and a beer, this is was an expensive and regrettable mistake.

Michael K. We made a reservation for dinner for 4 on a Tuesday night for 730pm. When we arrived, a girl said that there was no reservation in the book. I looked in the book and found it. She didn't bother looking too hard! Our table was given away to someone else even though we arrived before our reservation time. After discussions they gave us a bigger table for 6.<br/>We sat down at 730 and no one came to take a drinks order, give a menu or ask if we wanted bread until 810pm. When I complained they brought a menu and we ordered a bottle of wine. Our dinner orders were not taken until 9 pm. A pizza for entree to be shared took 40 min to come. Again we complained and were advised that they were busy!!!! No manager was present , no owner was present, no was available to talk to. A ship without a rudder......<br/>They gave us another bottle of wine free, but no one wanted to drink as we hadn't eaten and we were all driving. This was very irresponsible by the staff of Bush Inn.<br/>Finally our meals came. Meals were ok , certainly not worth the wait . We finished at about 10.20pm.<br/>The waiters were not at fault they were doing multiple tasks. Kitchen was disorganised and management NON EXISTENT.<br/>We told them "take a photo, as we are never coming back". <br/>With so many choices where service is very good and the Resturant well organised, why would one want to come here? The food was nothing special. The prices were not cheap but not dear. The service was aweful.<br/>My recommendation would be to AVOID this establishment.

Love your Steak. Night out with friends and had a great welcome at the door, friendly staff and best of all the food was fantastic and great value. I had the Chicken breast this time but will be back again for a great steak....

Terrible Food. I didn't know how bad a restaurant could get a cooked steak and chips so wrong. Raw steak, uncooked chips and a choice of only one red cab wine in a glass. Never going back, just terrible.
Georgec
Now a Bistro With Fine Dinning Prices. Used to good be food, a bit high on price but justified with the consistency and quality of food and service, now it has been changed to a bistro, same high price, food menu change to pub meals. All food was undercooked and steak raw. Lost a customer.
Snazza
Good steaks. We've gone to the Bush Inn regularly over the last 3 years and have never been disappointed. In an area where it's hard to get a good steak, this is the consistent place.

Went here with my girlfriend. Had the tiger prawns for entree and was delicious. We both had an eye fillet and was cooked to perfection. Would highly recommend this place to everyone. Friendly staff and great looking place.

Very underwhelming. I’d always avoided The Bush Inn due to what seemed like very high prices, but against my better judgement decided to give it a go. The entree of oysters were quite good, and the steak was decent and actually cooked well done as requested. However there was quite a long wait for service, including an instance where we had to ask twice for a drink refill despite it being a quiet wednesday night. The wine we ordered cost 3 times the amount it retails for which made me curse the place and vow never to return. A $280 bill for a table of 3 with mediocre food including one entree and steak mains, one bottle of wine, a few vodka and limes and a measly plate of greens. Will not be returning to this restaurant.
Steph J
Relatively expensive but worth the money! Nicest steak I've had in a long time. The mashed potato, Salads, garlic bread and even the fresh dinner roll that they bring out warm still in the little pot it was cooked in did not disappoint. Gonna save up and go there again. (great place for a date) Nice atmosphere.

What a fantastic place from the decor to the service and most importantly the impressive menu and quality food - the steaks were to die for and just melted in your mouth everything was home made from the amazing desserts to the bread rolls and fries. Will definitely be going back.

Best steak in melbourne !!!. We go to the bush inn at least once a fortnight, and have taken fussy family members several times, and have always had a fantastic meal. The steaks are the best we've had ever, but its not just about the steaks ... The service, ambiance, staff, surroundings, etc make you want to return before you even leave. If you haven't tried the bush inn, you have to at least once, and I promise you won't be disappointed.

Fantastic. I went to the Bush Inn recently with 2 of my colleagues & we all had an amazing experience. Love the fresh baked tasty breads coming out warm, smelled & tasted delicious. I ordered a calamari for entree & it tasted so fresh & yummy. My colleagues ordered the calamari as well & the other got a prawn cocktail which they both absolutely loved it. The barramundi main for me was perfectly cooked, crispy on the skin & perfect. My colleagues had the steaks & they both can not stop raving about how perfect their steaks were cooked & tasted so great. They said that it might be the best steak they have so far. Ohh, don't forget about the side dishes, we ordered the green veggies & fried onions to share & they were just soooo delicious. To top it up, we had some deserts & we all loved the caramel panacotta & a selection of home made ice cream (I think they were orange, apple, malted & banana flavours) & they were all so yummy, silky & delicious. The best ice cream I have ever had. The atmosphere was great & the place is clean, elegant & amazing. We all said to ourselves that we have found our favourite & regular venue. I can not recommend it enough. Try it people, life is too short. I loved it

My best friend and I always go here on our Friday afternoon lunch break.<br/>The lovely waiter is fantastic and always so friendly.<br/>We ordered burgers last time we went and OH MY GOSH, the were HUGE and DELICIOUS! The barramundi is delicious also.<br/>Would highly recommend!!

Nice but for the price not great enough. won't go again

Neil. Two things that stand out for me about this restaurant is the grass-fed beef and the little loaves of bread they bring to the table after you order. They are obviously straight from the oven as they are warm and taste absolutely amazing with lashings of butter. Would recommend to anyone for a special meal at great prices!!!

Melbourne's best Friday lunch secret. Great service and one of the best eye fillets I've ever had!
Emily
Warm and cosy. My boyfriend and I went for an impromptu dinner here and had a really nice evening. Our waitress was charming, warm and friendly which shared the atmosphere of this restaurant. <br/><br/>The food was incredible. We had a steak - which was cooked to perfection - and the most incredible pie I've ever had. It's the perfect winter destination and I'd definitely recommend a visit if you're a meat lover!

HAPPY CUSTOMER. Have been going to The Bush Inn, Toorak for the last six months and never disappointed. Usually my partner and I have their steak and it always comes out perfect. The chips that comes with is done to perfection........absolutely crispy. Can't complain about the service, always there to please. Also the lambs fry is another winner. For entree the oyster natural that comes with the red wine vinegar and onions is excellent.

Mozzie. The Bush Inn is our local and a much loved favourite of ours.We have introduced family and many friends who also love it and constantly return. The steak is always cooked to perfection and the fish and seafood always delicious, in fact everything we have eaten here has been very tasty. <br/>Simon, Suzanne and staff always provide us with great service in a friendly environment. Highly Recommend.

Dinner Review. I have been to The Bush Inn many times and had the steak and scallops and everything has always been 100%.Beautiful !!! The staff are excellent always giving you their full attention. Highly recommend.

Had a great night here with my family last night. Steaks were cooked to perfection (melt in your mouth eye fillet as other reviews have said) and tasty chips and sides. My son thoroughly enjoyed his kids meal, and the dessert special was perfect for the 3 of us to share. But the best part of all was the friendly and attentive staff who provided us with quick and efficient service from when we walked in to when they let us out the door. Would definitely recommend this place!

Best customer service, atmosphere and attention to deal - the menu is brilliant and you have eaten a real steak until you have dined here. The chefs are magic!... Well worth everyone's time you just need to experience it for yourself

Tasty times at the bush inn. Great steak cooked to perfection, just as it was ordered. Will be back.

Oh dear. Awful<br/>I’ve revisited. (September 2018). The menu published here bares no resemblance to this venues menu. We ate in what was 505 and it was pretty much okay. And so was the food, with both blokes loving the 300 gram steaks. My parma was mega huge and was delish. But please Bush Inn, serve smaller portions, the entrees were too small to constitute dinner and all the main courses were too large and laden with fat.

Beautiful melt in your mouth eye fillet - cooked to perfection!

Oh, what a night!. A big thank you must go to the Bush Inn Steakhouse team for providing a dining experience that will not easily be surpassed. From start to finish the service was welcoming and attentive to all our requests. The calamari was a perfect way to start the meal, however the piece de resistance was the 450g Rib Eye perfectly cooked to medium rare. It was flavoursome, succulent and left my mouth watering in anticipation of the next bite. Both courses were accompanied by beautiful wines from a concise, yet inviting wine list. A great night was had by all, and I am looking forward to my next visit to the Bush Inn Steakhouse.

Best Steak in Town. Being going to the Bush Inn Steakhouse for months now and have enjoyed every meal we have eaten there. The best steak place in town and I would highly recommend it to anyone to try it. Definitely will be coming back. Kids also love it and ask to go there when they are craving steak.

Our top night at The Bush Inn Steakhouse started with the warm friendly voice who answered my call to book a reservation, followed by the welcoming greeting we got on arrival, the cosy elegant décor, the top quality steak and the responsive customer service forms the basis of this 5 star review. My wife mentioned it was her favourite steak and most enjoyable restaurant so far. Pleasure to recommend.

Overpriced for what you get. The decor is a bit confusing but the service was ok. Honestly can't compete with the many local gems around the corner, we'll be going to The Orrong Hotel instead.
Bubble
Perfect evening, food and service!. Had a great night, started with friendly and helpful service, and continued with beautifully prepared food. Had creamy, smooth, velvety duck liver parfait for entree while my partner tried the raw beef carpaccio...both were clearly made with passion and expertise. Main was the house signature dish of 'chateaubriand'...Ot comes out impressively on a share platter and is somewhat overwhelming, but delicious. Can see why its the signature dish. Loved the meals, obviously a good team of chefs. Will be back, can picture my next family event there... Very warm, inviting and comfortably relaxed.

Perfect steak with lovely people

Over priced. Renovation is definitely a huge improvement from former pub, however think steakhouse is trying to be something that its not. Steal no better than any other pub steak and obscenely priced. You can get a better deal at Bistro Thierry next door. Too many pubs are trying to be gastro, when really I think good quality pubs or restaurants at medium prices would get return patronage. Unfortunate given area could do with a good local.

I have been to The Bush Inn two times now and I'm about to book for a third :) We were lucky enough to get the same waitress both times and she was lovely an attended to all of our needs! The steaks are great an they offered us a mash substitute when we didn't want chips, which was good most decent steakhouses won't do that :) The little bread rolls that come out in their individual warm crockery are to die for an the sides are also amazing! I highly recommend its worth the cost! :)
Honest Joe
What would you expect for a $68 steak? A waitress that doesn't know the menu and looks like she is coming off an 8 step programme? The delightful sounds of Starship's 'Nothing's gonna stop us now' blasting over the PA while the TV is showing dog racing at Ballarat. The confused decor that combines 'vintage' posters of CUB advertising with booths straight out of TGI Friday's? At least you know what the food and drinks are gonna look like, the photos on the menu are taken by the same guy who does the Vietnamese restaurant around the corner! What a horrific experience that ruins half decent food. This place will be offering 50% off in 6 months.

Bloody good steak. Nice place for a pot and a top quality steak, my local!
Leila Jayne
Best pot pies around! I love how they serve the mash potato and the peas with bacon are amazing!!! A little pricey compared to some other pubs, but it is located in Hawksburn Village so you couldn't expect it to be cheap...

Ate here recently after the renovation. Awesome steak, loved it and have been back a couple of times and has been fantastic each time. Well worth it for a great steak

The Bush Inn - a great place for steak!. Two colleagues and I recently attended The Bush Inn and enjoyed a business luncheon whilst there.<br/><br/>The Bush Inn is a very old establishment and has recently been brought back to life as a top quality restaurant. It is a very comfortable restaurant with pleasant surroundings. It is well set out and you are definitely not not sitting on top of each other.<br/><br/>We found they offered very good service as well as an adequate wine list. The range of cocktails is pleasing.<br/><br/>I really enjoyed the duck liver, brandy and port wine parfait served with an onion jam and toasted brioche. A very enjoyable entree, indeed. My colleagues similarly enjoyed their entrees as well.<br/><br/>The mains rolled on - I had ordered a small eye fillet with a brandy peppercorn cream sauce. We all decided on a garden salad with some baked field mushrooms and and crispy fried onions to accompany the main courses.<br/><br/>I can't remember when I enjoyed a steak as much is this one, beautifully cooked, exactly as I had ordered it. The brandy peppercorn cream sauce was superb, and was better than I had anticipated. I must say that the portions are generous. Also, the crispy fried onions are indeed delightful!<br/><br/>My colleagues enjoyed their meal is equally as much, so much so that we could not fit in dessert.<br/><br/>All of this, together with a very pleasant Shiraz, rounded out an excellent meal.<br/><br/>Could not fault the service, the wait staff were very attentive and looked after us very well indeed.<br/><br/>One could reasonably classify this as an expensive restaurant. However, the quality of the food and its presentation more than make up for the cost.<br/><br/>It is a restaurant I will return to and highly recommend it if you are a serious lover of a very good steak.
Josh Calcagno
It might just be because I went to char grill on the hill a few days before coming here but I must say that my steak, although it was well cooked, was not worth the 63$ I paid for it. I ordered the 650g rib eye and although cooked well felt like something I could get at any old pub for half the price. The waitress that served us was very friendly and attentive but I was let down by the steak itself and think that it was horridly over priced.
DandE
Superb. We had lunch here on Saturday and couldn't have been made to feel more welcome. The steak was the best I've had in a long time and the sides were also spot on. Service was attentive and friendly. The other 5 people in our group were equally impressed.

The Burger Adventure
Standing tall on the corner of William and Malvern roads since 1849, the Bush Inn was once the place to meet your friends and family as you returned from the city on your horse and cart. With a refurbished dining room and a new menu devoted to the art of steak, this old world, family friendly restaurant is busy looking to reaffirm itself as the place to eat in Toorak. Dark wood, leather and maroon carpet give the place a cosy but sophisticated air. Although steaks are their bread and butter, they do offer a variety of other pub favourites like a parma, a chicken pot pie and fish and chips. Delivered to us by some very friendly staff we ordred the Beef Burger that came on a brioche bun with a beef pattie, bacon, egg, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles and a side of chips and onion rings.
