Review Kingfishers Cafe Restaurant - Toowoomba

James McEvoy
My Wife and I decided to go out for lunch today, as we thought it would be nice to spend quality time with each other, but unfortunately the worst thing we could have done was to choose the Kingfisher Cafe on Spring Street. It’s clear to see that the owners have put a lot of love into the Garden centre, but unfortunately for them there’s no love whatsoever in the Cafe, by the way it looks and the food that is served out. It’s very run down, unclean and the wait staff looked like they haven’t washed there uniforms all week, over all it felt very unhygienic. The menu was also very limited and uninspiring. Have you heard the saying, you eat with your eyes? Well today I don’t know what I was served, but I actually thought I got a kids meal to be honest. Not once did I get asked how was your meal, because if I did, you wouldn’t have me writing this review on google, I would have politely let you know that it wasn’t good. I understand that the cost of food is rising daily, but I was shocked to receive a few fries, a slice of bread with processed ham and cheese melted on the top for $19! I almost thought I had been pranked, it was so bad (see photo of ‘open grill’ below). My wife ordered the Pork Belly salad which basically seemed like fat covered in sauce, placed on top of a bag of salad from Aldi for the bargain price of $24. My advice to the owners. I would really like for you to upgrade and clean your cafe as it has so much potential. Maybe some fresh uniforms for the staff as well. For the price you are charging, you need a compete overhaul of the menu. We had eaten here a few years ago and really enjoyed the food. What happened? Unfortunately we won’t be back.

The meals at the Cafe are really really good. The staff are helpful polite and happy to serve. You are able to have a glass of wine with lunch which is great. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating was because of the doors being open to the diners outside you are plagued with flies in the indoor seats. The garden centre itself is well worth a wander around and the gift part is wonderful. The added bonus of nice clean public toilets is definitely a bonus. All in all a meal at the Cafe is well worth it.

If the weather allows, always sit outside in the garden. Lovely setting, friendly and helpful staff. Wonderful for a long lunch with friends. Great coffee and good food.

A beautiful little cafe with scenery to remember. My family when her for lunch and it was amazing, tasty, fresh and price is good. Staff were friendly and coffee AMAZING! Great atmosphere.

Beware of the price.. it’ll get ya. We paid $26 for two bowls of very small chips and $6.50 for a coke no sugar which then came in a 330ml bottle. No prices on entry. You have to sit before prices are evident. We completely understand inflation and the impact on the food service industry but this is a little much. We weren’t the only ones talking about the dismal serving sizes and below par, cold food. If you are going to charge upscale prices you need to provide upscale food and service. This place isn’t close to either. Spread the word around Toowoomba, we will be. Avoid.

Food and hospitality was fantastic. We had a large table celebrating birthdays. Unfortunately none of the staff came around to ask if we wanted another coffee. Missed opportunity for another $100+ in the till.

The food was good, and the atmosphere was nice. We were able to get a table at quite short notice too! The only downside was as they were quite busy, it was about an hour from when we walked in to when we got our food. Would go again though - though I might try to get a less busy time!

Very expensive for a little pizza, cheese burger and a kids meal $65 we said no to drinks as I couldn't justify $6.50 for a 300ml lemonade even the lady taking our order said it was a rip off. Anyway food was nice and portion size of the meals adequate but really not to the price we paid. Wonderful staff and awesome location.

Very poor service and food. We had the Duck and Salmon, what was on the menu and on the plate was very different. Very poorly cooked and tasteless. Would never recommend or eat here again.

Kingfishers cafe and restaurant is amazing. Love the atmosphere and setting. So relaxing. I had the pizza for two. Such a good option. Easy to share plus it included a salad and pumpkin chips. Even if you only want a coffee it is peaceful enough to have a chat and be able to hear each other. It is the perfect place to go. I highly recommend it.

We have moved here from interstate. This is where all other restaurants around Australia should send their staff and managers to see how they should run their business. You are very lucky, Toowoomba. The environment is stylish and relaxed. The seats were comfortable. The value is awesome for the quality presented in each part of the meal. The chefs are creative, competent and efficient. The food was well cooked and carefully presented. The wait staff were efficient and thoughtful. They were also friendly, yet respectful of my privacy (to my relief, nobody asked how my meal was until the end). When my wine did not come out for mains, I had one staff subtly check and then another ask if the wine had come. That is attention to service ladies and gentlemen. Their menu will make me come back time and time again. (Oh and I am a selective tipper.)

Menu seemed innovative but not “older person” friendly for those looking for a light simple meal. Took my elderly father and ended up having to ask for a simple toasted sandwich for him - and it was so bulky he couldn’t eat it properly. Spoilt our special lunch out. Beautiful setting - it would be so nice if there were some simple small meal offerings.

My daughter and I had lunch yesterday. It was very busy, the food was beautiful and the service outstanding. We were sitting outside, a beautiful day. I loved the chalk boards, kept my daughter busy while we waited for our food. We will be back.

I have had the pleasure of having coffee and lunch at Kingfisher Cafe, and can only say that it is great to have such a quality place to dine at. The staff and surrounds are truly excellent as is the food. The only problem I have is that I don't get to dine there often enough!

Had breakfast there (again) and (again) one particular waitstaff was rude. Not only was she rude to me and my guests, but also to another staff member right in front of me! Further, we weren't even finished with meals before they tried to clear the table.....Won't be returning and certainly won't be recommending!

Great food, service and staff A great day was had by all of us

Went for breakfast recently, and very disappointed. Staff are rude and in dire need of training esp. in customer service. Upon arrival, approaching the counter, were told to seat ourselves as table service would be provided . Why our order could have been taken at the counter, because we waited a good 20mins before a waiter came to our table. Our order was taken and we both requested our coffees be served first, and was assured this would be done - as "we are not busy, so I will do the coffees on a separate docket". After a lengthy wait - 40mins plus, the meals arrive WITH the coffees!! Both coffees were luke warm at best, one which was supposed to have honey instead of sugar - didn't. When my friend went to the counter to inform staff her coffee was cold ( a cappucino) the staff member was quite surly, firstly insisting that the honey was in the coffee, and to rectify the cold coffee - just added more hot milk!!! Upon leaving, we spotted what we thought was a Guest book for comments - however, were abruptly informed by staff member that it was a Reservations book -why is it in public view - with peoples phone numbers etc.? Food was average, and along with the Fawlty Towers attitude of staff, a return visit is never going to happen. Have to admire the staff's optimism - an oversized coffee mug placed at the till, glaringly marked "TIPS"....

Been here a bit over the years and usually find it good but on 14 Nov 2018 we (a party of three) were all disappointed. Menu was a bit light on especially for the price. I had a Thai Beef Salad that was uninspiring and the taste just wasn't there - the nicest part were the nuts. Paying this much for a salad for lunch and getting bland food won't see me hurrying back meaning I'm now scurrying to find some thing better for 12 of us in a fortnight.

Beautiful setting, good service, food was bland and lacking in flavour though. Had sandwich envy because my risotto was so uninspiring! It’s nice if your looking for a simple scone and tea or sandwich but nothing more.

I met up with some of my family members here at their request. I was sadly disappointed with my experience, I ordered a a couple of sides dishes for a snack which consisted of cooked mushrooms and hash browns with Ciabatta. I asked if I could not have any butter on the bread or mushrooms as I cannot consume this, after about 30 mins the waiter served me the mushrooms cooked in butter and the bread engorged with butter. After having to send this back, 20 minutes later the food comes out again and not very hot. I also ordered a soy latte, which was not very hot either (i understand that you cannot heat soy milk to the normal temperature that you can with cow milk without burning it) and it was served with chocolate (I cannot have diary eg. 'Soy Latte') that was melted to the side of the cup. Later on, I also ordered chips which were also served a little warmer than room temperature. Unfortunately, I will not be returning.

I came here for lunch during the week day and ordered one of their chef specials and their berry rose ice tea. Their ice tea was meh, but their food looked good, I enjoyed the vegetarian dish I ordered, it was a good serving and good price. I didn't actually finish it that's how big the serving was. The atmosphere, out door seating was nice, lots of space and family friendly. They are joined to an outdoor furniture/gift shop/nursery also.

Beutiful outdoor setting made for a very enjoyable experience. Service was a little slow but the food was nice. Good first impression from me.
The Kingfishers Cafe has a great selection of food for both breakfast, lunch and dinner. I had the corn pancakes with scrambled eggs and avocado. I also got some hashbrowns too. The meal was really nice and came out quickly. The gardens where is Kingfishers Cafe is in are beautiful with plenty of plants to look at, also the cafe is attached to a nursery and gift shop that is great to have a wonder through.

Horrible, horrible, horrible. The food was nice.... But that's about where the positives end.

I'm going to use dot points to try and sum this up without drawing it out too long as the experience was horrid.

1. They lost our booking and firstly they did not believe that we made one until we showed the phone record. This was greated with an unapologetic response.
2. It took more than 25mins to have our drinks order taken. We never received these drinks. We'd finished our meals and we're leaving when we were chastised for not waiting to receive our drinks. Hhhmmm....
3. The food took over an hour to come for breakfast. At such time, 6 of the 7 meals were delivered. After most of the table had finished their meals we enquired about the status of the final meal only to be told that it was another 10mins away. When we expressed our concerned we received a very snappy response with one of many crimancing expressions.
4. The staff are extremely rude, very unhelpful and the never ending barrage of disgusting looks is just too much.

Overall we all agreed that we were NEVER returning to this cafe. We all can tolerate bad service if the staff are polite and make an effort to help. The staff here give the most disgusting expressions and provide a tokenistic response (I.e. 'We're busy today') without following up any issues with the kitchen.

Do yourself a favour and avoid this place.

I had some trouble deciding between a few of the main options and asked our waiter for a recommendation between the duck and the lobster, with a firm recommendation that the duck was superb. I took the recommendation and ordered the smoked duck breast with parsnip puree, warm potato salad, turned zucchini and a cherry jus. The presentation of the duck was more rustic than refined but had a lovely smoky smell that was as a result of the smoking of the duck.
