Review Torquay Fish And Chips - Torquay

I have never left a bad review, but this was appalling. Used to be owned by a lovely man who was passionate about fresh seafood. My dad and I both had to spit out the fish, wafer thin, on pancake like batter which was rubbery, chips were disgusting and extremely soggy. Potato cake was from a packet and not fully cooked. If I could give I would, inedible. My usual place is Bell Street (they are amazing, fresh seafood and great service). I went to Gilbert try my luck, and I’ll never return. Waste of a business this close to the ocean. Not many or any locals go here anymore. Avoid.

You would think a fish and chip so close to the ocean would have real Calamari. Lamb souvlaki was more like a mini souvlaki 🤦‍♂️I advise you to go else where.

$10 worth of chips. Hand for size reference This is supposed to feed 5 people……? Very confused by the sizing here Have called and been told he used “2 handfuls” to measure the $10 worth. That’s right he actually used his hands rather then scoops, and wasn’t covid safe. Don’t waste your money on fish and chips in Torquay

Bought two 'Big burgers', $15.90, for lunch on Sun, 10 April, 2022. Verdict: Fail. The buns we're too soft and stale, the double beef patties had too much bread filler and not enough meat content. There was too much oil in each, also. Disappointed. Should have known from the poor attitude of the staff to waiting customers to know anything good will come out of this kitchen! Maybe others weren't as unlucky, but I won't come back. Too many other good places to go to.

Silly me decided to support local and choose a random fish and chip shop, as I waited for my food I gave it a google, I couldn't believe the owners responses to the reviews it leaves a very bad taste on a customer and in this day and age if you read bad reviews your not going to that store, customer service was awesome the food was pretty below average for $20. Instead of bagging the reviews the owner needs to take feedback and maybe take a few hints

Worst piece of fish ever from a chippy. Wafer thin fillet covered in overcooked batter for $9. Vile. Chips and potato cakes good though and friendly service.

I ordered flake, dim sims, potato cakes, fish sticks, scallops and chips and gravy. All tasted great, however the flake was particularly thin, no option for grilled, and the batter slightly soggy.

It's a good local fish and chip shop, reminiscent of the mom and pop shop of childhood days. We had the flakes, chips, potato cake and pumpkin cake (at first I thought it would be a carrot cake deep-fried, but it's like a potato cake but with pumpkin. I was confused). Everything tasted good, nice and crispy. The main stand out was the pumpkin-cake, a must-try!

Super sad to come back here when the quality has diminished. This was up with the worst fish and chips I’ve had in my lifetime. They must be new owners as I remember this being so consistent for years. We used to drive here just to get fish and chips. I feel like I have sculled a whole bottle of oil. They must also have a different supplier for there food as the potato cakes and dim sims are of super low quality. Batter on the flake was literally dripping oil. EXTREMELY overpriced and not worth it one but. Seriously sad :(

Surprisingly this was one of the only fish and chip shops that were open on a Saturday night. It was super busy! We got the double deal pack $28.90 which was enough for 4 of us to share. The potato cakes were very dry and the flake was nothing mind blowing.

We decided to go with this place as it looked busy, however once we picked up our pack we were quite disappointed. Everything was far too oily, and without a doubt the cheapest tasting chiko roll I’ve ever had (some chiko roll knock off).

Soggy bright yellow chips - perhaps change the oil people. Soggy fish. Ordered 2 pieces and got one but didn’t realise til 5 minutes away at our destination so wasn’t going back. How do you call out 2 fish whilst wrapping up a parcel with obviously one. Won’t be back.

Visited here for lunch and it was quite busy but service was fast and friendly. Fish was delicious but the potato cakes were a miss, would definitely return for the fish though!

Possibly not the worst in the world, but most certainly far from good. Over priced, over cooked and I am over these fish and chips. Would recommend a different shop in Torquay, perhaps the one near the caravan park

Rubbish is too kind when describing the fish on offer in this place. The one and only time we have been unfortunate enough to sample the food here we were served with paper thin slices of fish (flake) served in batter that was as least three times as thick as the fish. The batter was oily and undercooked and the chips were also underdone. Altogether grossly overpriced. Just because you are in a tourist hotspot is no excuse for ripping off diners, in fact the opposite applies. This place is off our list for future visits.

WASTE OF MONEY. $30 bucks for a burnt burger and a seafood basket which was a child's hand worth of chips a scrappy piece of flake but did taste good one calamari ring one over cooked prawn and one batter ball which was I'm guessing to be the scallop. The worst fish and chips in the country would be my vote at the moment don't waste ur time there is better left overs in the gutters of other outlets nearby.

Average fish and chips. The fish I had was not as fresh as I've had at other places. The chips were also too oily. Prices are reasonable and it's a popular cheap eat for locals and tourists. The service was good however and quick.

Nice food but portions are very small. Not great value for money. Disappointing considering it was quite busy and we were pretty hungry!....

Quite good fish and chips. Not the best I have had but the best in Torquay. In summer when they are flat out quality can drop. But usually quite good.

Not the way fish and chips should:(. Considering its location and opportunity we could not have been more disappointed. Have given the place with several goes with various friends. Way too oily and overall not up to it. Give it a miss

The chips were pretty ordinary for the price we paid. The staff were friendly and pleasant enough which was nice. The location was very central and easy to walk to from where we had parked.

Worst fish and chips ever. Hands down the worst fish and chips we have ever had. All aspects were bad. Nothing tasted good. I couldn't even pay by card as they don't have eftpos facilities.<br/>Oil looked like it hadn't been changed in several months. Never again.

WORST FISH AND CHIPS EVER.. I have never written a review for anything before, but I feel I need to share my opinion of this place so you don't make the same mistake as I, and that's what this place is a mistake. The double seafood special was plan horrible we didn't eat half of It, not because of the size(it was really small) but because of the quality. So disappointed waste of 30$. Waste of time & money. DONT GO HERE!!!

Worst fish and chips we've ever had! $45 for a few calamari, prawns and fish. Thickest, greasiest batter I have ever seen. More batter than anything else. The food was that oily it soaked through all the paper within seconds and left a film of oil on our lips as if we used lipbalm. Tried to peel off the batter to at least eat the food and it was tasteless and overcooked. I felt sick just looking at the mountain of brown greasy batter and my stomach was gurgling within 30 minutes of eating it. Gross. Never again!!!

Worst Fish n chips in Vicpotria. Think of a batter that can absorb as much old oil as you can and that's the batter used here. Even the birds w who were offered the offensive i fish n batter refused it ( actually 1 magpie took a piece away- all other pecked and move don) Once I separated the over-fried chips from the main serve about a third wee left. so $10 for a couple of chips.. = worse that the footy!

Having tried all the fish and chip shops in Torquay this one is easily the best. Super fast service with a smile, crunchy chips and the chunky cut flake is delicious ( definitely worth the little extra $ than the regular cut ). Don't let the old school decor put you off these guys obviously know their stuff.

Not only was our order packed, opened, handled, rehandled, packed again a few times, but then we were given a dressing down by the staff !!!!<br/>Unbelievable attitude from these people. This establishment is off limits for my family until there is new management. Putting the FNC back into FNC

Biggest rip off. Paid almost $30 for what looked like was 15 pieces of chips, 2 flakes, and 2 of the smallest patato cakes and dim Sims. The staff weren't friendly either . Will definitely not be eating here again

Terrible and stingy. As a .... Terrible and stingy. <br/>As a local, I keep giving this place another go time after time. But the other night we ordered a minimum of chips to have with our kebabs (from round the corner) but it was only enough for one. Usually a minimum from other shops would be enough for two and a child. Very disappointed and won't be going back now. Too many stingy serves for the prices they charge.

Have been purchasing fish & chip for the last year since we move to Torquay at Gilbert st fish and chips some times only chips to add to a meal we had cooked. We would also recommend our friends to go there. Gradually the portions have been getting smaller and smaller. Tonight we ordered 2 minimum serves of chips for 2 adults and 2 kids to go with spare ribs I cooked and we received about half the amount we normally receive. I know it's not a big issue but how hard it's it to measure out two serves of chips the same time in time out if that's what you do every day. Not happy and will not be back and will let everyone know of this poor service and the lack of response when notified as they always take a contact number.

Tried the chicken souvlaki and found I really really enjoyed it, best I've had in a while. Nice chips(though dont get alot for the minimum $4) will visit again!

Stingy. As a local and long time supporter of this business, I have to say that I'm really disappointed at the stinginess there of late. We ordered $10 of chips a couple of weeks ago and seriously, I could have held what I got in my cupped hands. It's ridiculous.<br/><br/>On the positive side of this though, I have looked around and found a MUCH nicer fish and chip shop in Jan Juc and will be going there often instead!

This is the worst fish'n'chips l have ever had, the burgers were uncooked, the steak sandwiches were like eating a piece of fat, potatoes cakes were also uncooked, and to top it of, what a rip off!

The best fish and chips. Been going to this fish and chips shop since i was a kid and the product is fresh tasting, good customer service, and the place looks amazing. dont read all the other bad reviews they could be competitors!! must try. :)

A rip off. We ate here on Saturday, we were the only customers. The fish we ordered was a joke, very small piece for $7, the chips were horrible. Our daughter could not find any potato in the potato cake. The hamburger was pretty average. We like to support local businesses, but this was really disappointing and wont bother going back.<br/>Also if you are going to accept entertainment guide vouchers it doesnt mean that you should treat your customers are less than a normal customer. We only use one voucher a year, but we eat takeway at least once a week in Torquay. We wont be back

Fish was revolting. Potato cakes were just batter. Do not recommend unfortunately.

Pretty Average. Was not overly impressed with the meal. The chips were old and sogy , my flake was honestly the skiniest piece of fish I have ever had (no it wasn't flathead) and the battered sav was average too. The scallops and crab were ok. We paid $30 for what we would get for $15 at home (400km inland) So very overpriced

If you like fresh fish cooked in a light crispy batter then this is the only place to go

Terrible place. First of all, the double seafood pack is more expense than two single seafood pack. Secondly, we we took the food away on the beach, there are 2 scallops, 1 calamari missing. Lastly, the tartars source is water thin. You should not be tricked to go to this place, because 100% of people liked it, because there was only 6 people voted on Urban spoon.

The batter is heavy, the fiake is mediocre, everything is quite greasy.
