Review Via Matta - Vermont

Sydney Food Lover
This is a local gem in Vermont dishing out authentic Italian food. The restaurant does take away and has a decent sized dine in seated area and offers byo. Pizza is a speciality with its extensive menu of both red and white base pizzas, they are cooked in a woodfire oven for that real authentic chewy pizza base. My fave was the prosciutto topped pizza. There is also a smaller range of pasta favourites available including specials of the day. The carbonara is a standout which I need to tell you about. There are two types of carbonara, the creamy kind of sauce made with cream and the ‘real Italian’ type that originated from Rome which is made without any cream but simply good quality panchetta/ Italian bacon, eggs and Parmesan. Via Matta offers the ‘real italian’ style carbonara for regulars who know to ask, I only discovered it during my first dining visit to the restaurant when it was ok the specials board. On my second visit to try the dish, it wasn’t on the menu but I discovered it’s available if you know to ask! On desserts, the tiramisu is a winner, it is a generous size so perfect for sharing or for one of course! The lemon cake was slightly still frozen when it was served to our table. Great service, definitely be coming back for another carbonara, pizza and tiramisu.

Was there 2 months ago. Small little restaurant. Pizza was good. The pasta was a little under cooked.

Such a dissapointing birthday dinner. We ordered through Uber eats and when the food arrived it was stone cold despite only living 2kms away. The order took 45mins to make which seems a long time when they are only doing take away. We ordered pizza and gnocchi. Gnocchi was expensive for how much you got and had zero flavour. The pizza was cold and after we warmed it in the oven the cheese still wouldn't melt properly and it had no flavour. Not filling and not paying for qaulity. Will not be back!

Delicious Woodfire Pizza + my newly fav Gnocchi . I've been to this place frequently as my partner found this is the best Pizza he had near our home. The service and the quality of their food are constantly cater our expectations. The staff are always friendly and made us feel welcome in each of our visits. Looks like most important ingredient are imported from Italy. Highly recommended.

Great service and even better food. Walked into the restaurant through a recommendation and can say it’s the best Italian pizza and pasta in Melbourne! Giulia was fantastic and had great recommendation from the menu. Will definitely come again!

Fairly average pizza, had to fold the slices as the base was paper thin, however was extremely disappointed by the calamari fritti, it was totally over cooked and was like boot rubber- they’re just battered squid rings and more than double the price of what a fish & chip shop charges. Wouldn’t recommend this place at all.

Excellent, authentic Italian pizza. A very good, thin and crispy dough. The quality is consistently excellent. A hidden gem in the suburbs.

Ever since I moved to this country I've been trying and trying to find a good italian restaurant. After searching and searching, my mother reccomended a family owned restaurant called Via Matta and ever sincr my first time eating there I've been forever changed. Via Matta has arguably the best italian cuisine in melbourne. The family and staff that run the restaurant are lovely and the prices are perfectly affordable. I highly reccomend whatever is on the specials board for your first visit, but if that's not your style the Gnocci al Pesto is my personal favorite item on the menu. The wine imports have been some of my favorite bottles of all time, especially the Pinot Grigio. Going to Via Matta with my Fiance, by myself, or with family has become a tradition that I've come to cherish and look forward to. Thank you for all of the wonderful times Enzo, Luigi, Nina, and staff!

Ordered takeaway pizza (Sesfood and Tropicale). It's yummy, especially the Seafood pizza!

When I want an Italian fix/feed, I head to VM. Luigi and his crew at this simple joint serves up nothing but the best. Fresh and delicious. Every single time. Enzo at front of house is a warm, bubbly and real friendly bloke too.

Top notch REAL Napoli woodfire pizza, Thin base , fresh minimal topping. Amazing every time. Great prices also for such quality ingredients.

If you want a thick shit processed topping style American pizza this classy authentic place is not for you.

Love this authentic Italian place. Friendly service and great food with delicious pizza, pasta & the gluten free gnocchi especially. Well done.

Delicious pizza! There is nothing else like it in the area. Excellent bases, amazing tomato napoli sauce, quality toppings. I can highly recommend the Via Matta Special. Thanks guys!

I was quite disappointed in their penne carbonara that I ordered off UberEats. While the penne itself was fine, the sauce was very disappointing. It lacked a lot of flavour and there was not much of it anyway. It tasted like something out of a jar. Disappointing and not worth the 3.9 they're currently rated.

Yummy yummy! Very nice staff and chef also. The pizza was awesome with all fresh ingredients. I don’t usually love olive but their olive were impressively good. Pasta was special of the day with mushroom sauce. Fantastic homemade pasta. We also ordered Tiramisu for dessert - again very nice balance. Next time would love to try the Nutella calzone. I live in South Yarra with lots food options but I’ll still come back!

Great food and friendly staff. We ordered a pizza and pasta, both were incredibly fresh and yummy! Normally I prefer pizza over pasta, but the pasta tasted incredibly fresh and I found myself eating the pasta over the pizza. I will definitely go back!

Forget 400gradi, D.O.C., and all those overpriced "authentic Italian gourmet" pizzerias. Honestly, Via Matta is the best pizza I found in Victoria, great ingredients and lovely staff.

If you are looking for the usual thick base pizza with lots of topping, this place is not for you. Enzo and his guys are the real deal, making pizza just like you get in Italy, thin base and a few toppings.... I have been there 3 times now and they are really good at what they do, making pizza the authentic way. Will be trying their pasta soon and have high expectations, based on the quality of their pizza.

Was told about this restaurant a few weeks ago by our local cafe in Donvale Ciao Man. First week we had pasta and was delicious very simple and tasty. Last week shared a Pizza and Gnocchi with Pesto again was really nice. Decor is typically Italian not all glitzy and shiny and staff are terrific.
Pizza is nice and crusty and simple toppings which we love and we do not have to go to Carlton or Brunswick anymore we have a good Italian restaurant on our door step.

We live locally and had read great reviews so visited tonight. We commented to the owner the flavour was nice but the pizza a little soggy. He abruptly told us this was the Neapolitan style and started ranting. This may be the case but he could just as easily have said I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it but this is the Neapolitan style. We will definitely not be back based on our experience with him. What a shame we love wood fired pizza but will not be back nor recommend it to anyone we know. We would rather spend our money elsewhere.

A really lovely, reasonably priced, authentic small local Italian Restaurant. Every dish we ordered was good quality. No pasta was over cooked and too soft. The wood fire pizza was crispy and I really enjoyed the crust. Service was friendly and run by an old Italian man. You can see the chefs making pizza live as well. I give this place 3.5/5

Risotto alla Pescatore- Arborio rice combination of seafood cooked in light white wine sauce- My only criticism is the prawns was overcooked. 3/5

Calamari Fritti-lightly floured calamari served with a bed of salad with lemon and tartare sauce- the dish was not overly oil and the batter melts in your mouth. 4/5

Fettucine Carbonara Special. 3/5

Pappardelle with bacon, mushroom, green peas and sauce- the combination of flavours is so simple and so delicious. 3.5 /5

Bbq meat lovers. 4/5

I've heard a lot about this local Italian restaurant & one night I decided to give it a try. I am so happy I did.

My boyfriend and I came here on a Friday night after we had HUGE Italian cravings. We ordered the garlic bread, the gnocchi and the Greco pizza. Along with a nice red wine.

All of the dishes were full with flavour and represented the authentic Italian food that I LOVE! The staff were beautiful. They were so so friendly which makes it all the more enjoyable. Service was fast and efficient. Loved it & I look forward to trying more of their dishes in the future :)

Really good pizza!! Not too much topping, crispy base and stands up to fold test! Simple decor and solid menu. Experienced pizziolo who doesn't disappoint. Would try the pastas . Definitely be here again!!

I always drive by here and think I should check it out. Came here on Friday. It's not swarming with people but was busy enough.

Food was alright. It wasn't my favourite but wasn't a negative either. I had the ravioli and the filing and sauce was beautiful, but I just found the pasta was really thick. The service was lovely and the restaurant has that old cafe type of feel.

One reason why I was drawn here is I assumed it might do a good tiramisu. I was hanging out for dessert and I certainly wasn't disappointed. It's hitting close to the spot for me. I would definitely come back just for that. There's not many decent Italian places in the area, so I'm glad I checked this place out.

We have been getting pizza from here for the last few months and every pizza has always been great. Love the authentic Italian pizza, definitely worth a try.

Enjoyed Via Matta's Compare pizza. I'm no expert but the toppings were of good quality. I am thinking they are being slightly underhanded though with no mention anywhere of the price hike of $3 to their pizzas.....

I've had takeaway from here a few times and it is always tasty and fresh and ample servings. They have quite a variety of pizza toppings too making for a larger choice than most local pizza places and the host is always friendly

My Absolute favourite local restaurant!

Food is traditional Italian and all made by hand and with love.

The actual pasta (I don't mean the completed dish) is handmade, from the spaghetti to the penne and lasagna sheets.

All sauces are made from scratch, nothing is from a bottle or jar. Luigi starts preparing his sauce bases daily around lunchtime (for dinner service) using fresh tomatoes, quality olive oil, wine etc

Here u will get "traditional Italian wood fire" pizza.
The base is thin, again handmade from scratch, and your pizza will arrive hot with a crispy base.
U can watch it being cooked and prepared by the skilled "pizzaiolo" in the open wood fire oven if u like.

If u like your pizza base thick & soft and your pizza smothered with oily cheese and so many toppings you can't taste what you are eating, then u won't like the pizza here.

Here your pizza is a traditional flat bread with selected toppings of your choice.

If u like ham on your pizza, expect freshly "sliced" Virginian ham, Via Matta don't use processed little rectangles of ham that come in 5kg bags. They slice the ham off the bone on site.

If u like mushrooms u won't be served little mushies that are all the same size and identical shapes (pre packaged stuff). They, like all the other ingredients are hand chopped fresh daily.

I have taken many family and friends to this restaurant and everyone of them has been very happy with their meal.

Via Matta also has a 5 star food safety & hygiene rating from inspections from the City of Whitehorse.

Something I didn't know, U can actually run and operate a restaurant if u achieve 3 or 4 stars.
5 stars means the premises goes above and beyond the required practices.

Seeing a restaurant's 5 star certificate always gives me peace of mind that I'm eating at a "safe" place.

There is a take away menu also, but they do not deliver. U will get the same high quality food if u order "to go".

Don't expect silver table service, instead expect friendly staff who care about their patrons at this family owned and operated restaurant.

Owners are Italian-Americans who take pride in their food, and who want you to leave their modest restaurant happy campers.

Highly recommend you give it a try, doubt u will be disappointed

Ate there tonight with a friend. We shared a vegetarian pizza and I had a latte Service was okay food came out quick. Food tasted average with lots of toppings and thin base. Coffee was average taste not too hot. A few nice paintings on the wall. Not a bad place but nothing to rave about either.

This is a Tipical Italian family restaurant, the pizza was really good, and I had a really quick service considering how busy they were, thanks to the italian skilled pizzaiolo✌️

Name is now different, not sure what it's called now, but is run by a different owner from when I was there last! I had a carbonara and my boyfriend had a Parma, food tasted great and service was good, but meal sizes are quite small for what we used to get for the same price! Very nice place and food, would go back when not to hungry, as we left still hungry!

A little piece of Italy in Vermont. Nice pasta, Gnocci Pesto is my favourite. A new Pizza chef ex Pizza Espresso cooks has changed the base to a beautiful crispy thin crust. They are now using San Daniele Prosciutto which is absolutely awesome.

Just got take away from here. For 16 dollars we got some very bland gourmet pasta. The sauce was very water and very little ingredients. Had to add our own cheese to give it some sort of taste. However our pizza was super tasty and fresh. The base was super good. But still very pricey.

Leonard. As a customer of over 10 years I was disappointed in the takeaway pizza tonight.
It appears to be under new management and decor. Sorry but you have lost me.
Kaitlin Hodgens
NO TOPPINGS. Very disapointing! When paying $55 for 3 pizzas you expect top quality. ham and pinnapple pizza? There were about 5 tiny bits of pinnapple and hardly any ham. Might as well call it a tomatoe paste pizza!! Mexicana not hot at all. Lamb pizza ha was lucky to get any lamb on my slice of pizza.

A little gem in the suburbs... this is some of the best pizza I've had outside Italy. The service is friendly and warm, just a joy.

Aweful. This place used to be fantastic. Now I would not feed it to my dog. Bad bases, ham straight out of the packet, no cheese. Ordered an Aussie, got a bad ham and cheese pizza that looked like a drunken tea agre had put together. Do not waste your money

We moved 12 months ago and we really missed this restaurant and decided to drop in for a meal tonight while visiting family . Couldn't wait to get our favourite dishes gnocchi basciola and chicken alcapolco and garlic cheese pizza.

The pizza was fabulous the other two meals tasteless . These used to have the most amazing sauce and now it's very tasteless and it's such a shame :(

Amazing. Food is brilliant and the service and staff are unreal so nice and welcoming.

Thanks 5 star #1

Highly recommend. A+. After hearing nothing but good news about this place from a family friend, my wife and I came here and ordered their lamb greek salad and margherita pizza. The food came promptly and was DELICIOUS. Staff were very friendly, and the atmosphere was very authentic Italian. Can't wait till we visit again. A+

Calamari and the Garlic Prawns. A touch of Italian fair in down town Vermont. Quaint decor. Great service. Excellent Chefs in Mario, Luigi & Luca. All in all worth a visit.

Pizza used to be amazing, I think they changed chef and it has been average for the last few months

I wanted to like this cute place, but unfortunately the pizzas aren't much better than Big Al's around the corner - whilst wood fired on a good base, I don't feel their toppings are up to scratch and they were a bit light on. Came in on a Friday night and I know this is the busiest night, but whilst apologetic the service was disorganised between front of house and the kitchen.

Like their pizzas. Wood fired stove used and their pizzas are pretty good.

Love this place Great pizza.... Love this place
Great pizza and they always make me veal Marsala even when not on the special board

18th birthday celebration. Thank-you to Lucia for all her fabulous effort in helping us celebrate our daughter's 18th birthday. We had a large group and all had a great night. The food was fresh and lovely, enjoyed by all. Lucia decorated the tables beautifully with my daughters favourite colors, and helped organise the evening down to the last detail. This restaurant has a lovely family feel about it. Thanks again for a great evening.

Benissimo!. This is my absolute favourite Italian restaurant (and I am from an Italian family, so I can be a fairly harsh judge). The food is fairly authentic, the staff is friendly and I have lost count of the amount of times I have been here. Would recommend it to anyone who likes good Italian food with great service :)

Go for the Food. You don't go for fine dining service to the local family run pizza bar.. .sometimes you will get it anyway but probably not here :)

That said its not that bad, and the wood oven pizzas are consistently good and a grumpy face that's familiar has it's own charm!

Tira Misu is pretty good too if its available the day you go.. We consistently go back because we like it and they allow BYO

Great Value Restaurant. We celebrated our wedding anniversary at Mi Va il Gusto in Vermont on Friday night. As soon as the restaurant heard it was our anniversary, they presented us with chocolates and flowers. That was a wonderful start to the evening.
I had a classic Veal Parma and my wife had a risotto. They also have a wonderful range of wood fired gormet pizza's. I am pretty sure that there pasta is all made in house.
We eat there fairly regularly and definitely recommend it.
Great atmosphere, friendly service and very reasonable prices.

Best Lasagne in Town. We my husband and I found this little place 2 years ago, I ordered Lasagne my husband asked the waitress if it was possible for the chef Tony to do a Tuna spaghetti pasta in a red sauce as it was want he felt like. The waitress came back said yes happy to assist. We both my hubby and I could not fault the meal so much so now when we walk in they call my Hubby's meal a Tony special. We have taken many friends there since and all go back also recommending it to their friends.
The ambiance is simple but the food superb.

Family atmosphere. We love this place! They are always very friendly to us and they have lovely food- good food for a great price and it has a lovely atmosphere. Was dissapointed when reading some poor reviews because we honestly do love this place and hence why we will keep going back for more! We are a huge fan of their wood fired pizza :)
Stephanie
Horrible.. At this restaurant I experienced the worst service I ever have. There were separate incidences where the staff were not only unfriendly, but extremely rude. As a small, local and family run restaurant, I would have expected better. The food was not great, but that is not the reason I am not returning. I have had a friend get up and walk out due to the lack of service. Would definitely NOT recommend this place to anyone.
Ally
Not worth it.. After having an average experience on first visit, I decided to return to this restaurant to give it another try.
Firstly, I was berated for not having a booking. After waiting some time, and finally ordering, the food was average to say the least. The food, however, was not the issue. Service received was appalling, especially when finished and paying for the meal. Upon paying cash for an entree pizza, the owner of the restaurant yelled at me for not having the right amount of money, as he did not have sufficient change to return to me.
This is not the only bad experience from this restaurant, as friends have also commented on the lack of quality of service.
Will most definitely NOT be returning- despicable.
Emily
Unimpressed. Food came at different times and all four pasta meals were horrible-Overbearingly salty and spaghetti marinara tasted off. Pizza was ok, not the best. Never again.
Deb
Very disappointing. Despite requesting a particular table when I booked on the phone (and expressly stating that it was for my father with a hearing impairment) and requesting this again on arrival, this restaurant refused to meet our needs.
Most restaurants will go out of their way to cater for patrons with a disability. Not this one!
Ashecorven
Tasty if it wants to be. Had some great times here but unfortunately have also had average food twice, regardless of what I've ordered.

The Mushroom & Chicken Gnocchi can be amazing, as can be the woodfired pizzas. The garlic pizzas are always great, covered with the perfect amount of garlic, not too much or too little.

This has been around quite a while now and needs bookings on popular nights, otherwise you'll end up waiting with the 5 others waiting for take-away. Saying this I think the average food I've had has been amazingly bad luck.

...it was good to know that our little local Italian bistro/restaurant could provide a decent meal when needed.
