The first thing I order in any Malaysian cafe or restaurant is usually Char Kuey Teow. I feel that if a restaurant can do a great Char Kuey Teow, the rest of the menu would be great too. Having heard so many good reviews about the Straits Cafe, I decided to try it during the Stage 4 lockdown period. I don't live within the suburbs they deliver to, but the owner kindly offered delivery for me on condition that I'm happy for it to arrive after 2pm. I gladly accepted it.... Yummy delicious food is worth waiting for đ. I ordered Char Kuey Teow, Sar Hor Fun and Nasi Lemak Curry Chicken.
At 2.15pm, my doorbell rang and my order was delivered. Despite the distance, the food was still very warm, like it's just out from the kitchen! My partner and happily devoured our lunch.
OMG the Char Kuey Teow indeed was the best I've ever had! I like that I could request for extra wok hei and pork lard. The Sar Hor Fun was really good too, so is the Nasi Lemak.
I can't wait to try the other items in the menu.
Quick service, clean and authentic tasting Malaysian Chinese food. They char Kwai teow tastes just like what I ate in Penang. Would recommend!
Always driven past, so I stop by to grab lunch, I order the Hokken mee and it was so tasty, it brought me back to Malaysia. Rojak is good too that I kept the leftover sauce for when I have fruit at home. All of it has been very home style for my experience and great staff

Love the food- the flavour and texture of the dishes reminded me of the food I once had (when I was younger). Took my parents here and they said it taste better than what they had in Malaysia. Must try Poh piah, sar hor fun and char tong hun.
We came here for dinner on a Saturday. The place was quite packed when we arrived. We decided to order the popiah, sar hor fun, char tang hoon and ipoh hor fun to share. My favourite dish was the sar hor fun. The char on the noodles was excellent. The food was nice and the portions were sizeable. The only let down was the ice kacang. The syrup tasted like cough mixture and the ice wasn't shaved fine enough. Service was efficient.
My family and I are regulars here, but haven't visited in a while. We come back for its efficient service, tasty and simple Malaysian food. I would die for belachan kang kung and can usually handle the heat but this time round I was dying from its spiciness (we asked for mild) and the char tang hoon was a nice ratio of noodles and seafood. We also had Hainanise chicken rice to share - good portion for one, and the Sar Hor Fun - don't be deceived by its sloopy appearance.

Super authentic Malaysian cuisine. It does get super busy here so try to avoid peak times maybe have a slightly early lunch or slightly later lunch if you donât want to wait. Food and staff here are amazing and prices are reasonable !
Tried this place once last week, looking forward to visiting again. Tried the hainanese chicken rice and curry with roti, both were flavoursome and reasonably priced!
Fantastic food and the variety keeps you wanting to come back for more. Enjoyed the signature char kway teow at extra hot heat level. Great popiahs when you get a chance to grab them. Shiok!

Came here for lunch on a cold and wet weekday. Ordered a Char Kuay Teow and Kopi Tarik. CKT was nice, lots of wok hei, and tasty. Service was efficient. It was quite packed here which was a good sign.
Dine-in or take-away, the service is quick, friendly and food is delicious. Char Kwan Teow and Chicken Curry with Roti are my favourites and my mother enjoys their Nasi Lemak. They are also happy to plate your take-away on your own dishes if you prefer, instead of using take-away containers. If dining in, recommend making a reservation as they can get very busy and are quite small.
Very tasty food, quite spicy which suited the chilli lovers at our table. Staff were quite friendly, despite getting our entree wrong, and then our main wrong, not to worry. Would happily go back.
Real authentic Malaysian food! Comfort food for Singaporeans and Malaysians! Tried their Assam laksa for the first time and was super rich with flavour! Came with a Malaysian friend and he commented that the taste reminded him his childhood days.. well done chefs!
Efficient and prompt service. Food came out very quickly. Will come back for the Assam laksa. Char kway teow was quite salty, but thatâs probably due to my low salt tolerance. Hainanese chicken was nice, but the rice was white rice - not the kind you would usually get in Hainanese chicken rice. Will still recommend. Plenty of 2P parking outside restaurant.
Authentic Malaysian/Singapore local delights, known them since the owner's dad was cooking in Doncaster. At that time, he cooked one of the best Cha kway Tiao (Fried Kway Tiao). This store still make one of the best Asian food..and popiah. Lots of local visiting there so you can see the owner greeting some familiar faces. We will always be back when we are around the area.
Had their penang laksa noodle soup and tried a bit of char kway teow. Never had penang laksa before, it has strong belacan taste and smell, I enjoyed it. It has good ratio of meat and noodles, portion not too big or too small. Char kway teow was really nice too, had pork crackles diced and generous with it. Very impressed with the food, feels like what authentic Malaysian food should be (even though i have never been to Malaysia). It just feels like a lot of love put into the dishes. It came out quick too. The only thing that would make this place 5/5 is if it has more decoration to the place. At the moment itâs pretty plain and rather boring.
Straits cafe as Wantirna. Traditional Malaysian cuisine restaurant serves tasty Malaysian laksa and delicious dishes. Good place for lunch and I ordered the fish head laksa. Deep fried fish head and nicely cooked. Very good.
This place is always packed full with people, but tables usually will be available with couple minutes wait, as their food were served really quickly.
Love their crispy yee mee, noodles were deep fried (not greasy at all) and very generous with sauce. I am a sauce lover, so really happy with it. Sure will be back to try out other dishes.
Well priced and tasty local Malaysian food. Had the beef curry which was yummy, and the mee goreng was also great and with a little kick of spice. Roti was crispy and fresh. Really decent prices and nice staff too! :-) will definitely return!

Very nice Malaysian joint. The sar hor fun is worth a try. Delish. The place is always busy so call in beforehand. Cash only as well.
Excellent Malaysian food. The Teh Tarik was very bland and watered down, and the medium spice char kueh teow wasn't as flavoured, but the other dishes we ordered was delicious, with large quantities and at a decent price. Very popular place, so make sure to book beforehand if you plan to come around dinner time.
Went to East side of Melbourne and found this little hawkers restaurant, still runs by the original uncle and the families.
With this place, you just have to know what to order. Their best sellers taste great but the other, sometimes just ok.
The fried kwetiau and the wa tan hor are to die for. I dont think I could find a better place for this 2 items in Melbourne
I also loved the lobak entree.
Their spicy chicken is also great, chicken is crispy, rice is so yummy even you can eat it by itself, they also provide chilli with it.
My least favourit is the curry fish head laksa. Fish bascially just bones!! Its so hard to find the meat. And I tried to ask the aunty to put the fish head on seperate plate (so it does not get soggy) but she insisted that its better to put together on the bowl. And guess what.. it was soggy and in my opinion, curry was ok (compared to other dishes that taste so good)
The place is quite busy, make your bookings just to be safe!
I had prawn noodle and mee goreng. Very crowded restaurant. Saw good reviews here that is the reason for giving it a go, unfortunately I do not like it. The taste is not up to my expectations.
Yummy malay food, would definitely come back if I were craving gravy noodles.
Food: The food was great! We got the Chicken Ribs and the Geavy Noodles, the flavour was really nice and different from what I've had before. I would come back here for my malay fix anytime!
Service/Ambience: We had to wait outside for a table on a Saturday, I would suggest booking if you are having a big group dinner. People are great and they handled the busy peak hour well.
Wow, what a great find this little restaurant is! Things we loved were: friendly service, extremely quick, quality dishes and very reasonably priced ($44 for 4 people). The Char Kwey Teow was fantastic as was the Laksa. Just a pity we live 2 hours away, we will definitely be back.
These guys know their stuff. Authentic delicious Malaysian food. I canât pronounce any of the meals but what I can say - with a lucky dip you canât go wrong.
Amazing teh tarik. Char kwey teow is authentic with fatty lard pieces. Aromatic, flavoursome and decent portioned. Crispy belechan chicken spareribs are well flavoured and the chicken rice well make. Overall nice food
We have always enjoyed a good meal here and this time was no different. The Assam laksa has excellent broth. Enough thickness and spicyness. Fried glass noodles was excellent, rojak was outstanding although slightly steep in price but the generous ingredients of fruits, vege & cuttle fish made up for it. Only the curry laksa was sort of plain. Would recommend seafood laksa instead.
This is my third time at this restaurant and every time I come here, the food has never disappointed me. Wat tan hor, seafood laksa, fish head noodles and char kway teow are the epitomes of Malaysian/Singaporean cuisines and Straits cafe has done them well with good amount of wok hei (as can be seen from the slightly charred hor fun). Clean restaurant, great service and awesome food! It's my fav go-to!
This is DEFINITELY WITHOUT A DOUBT one of my always reliable, always hits the spot go to place for close to authentic Malaysian cuisine. Have tried many of their dishes but my faves are still the Hokkien Char Mee, Sarn Hor Fun (very legit and generous!), bak kut teh (has the intestines!), chicken rice, popiah, lobak, rojak, belacan chicken ribs, CKT, Yee Mee and Curry Laksa. Generous portions at good prices that's always packed with flavour and aromas. The Tarik is also good here and they really do Tarik the Teh. Aaron the owner runs a great crew and is always very warm, attentive, friendly and accomodating which is no wonder why this continues to be and always is a popular place amongst many especially the Asian foodiezens who know and appreciate their Malaysian cuisine no matter weekday or weekend! Keep up the great work Aaron and team. Awesome stuff! Hope you'll always be around and never move!

Well, it all began around six years ago when my family and I first visited Straits Cafe. Since then, we have been regular customers who always return home with four happy tummies. The boss Alan is very friendly and contributes equally to his share of work- serving and taking orders from customers as well, maybe cooking behind the scenes?? Who knows?
Our family favourites have always been the sar hor fun, char kway teow, fish head curry laksa, poh piah roti with chicken curry, hainanese chicken rice and their ice cendol is amazingly refreshing as well. All the staff respond quickly to take your order, are multilingual to accommodate for customers of all ethnic groups - which I found from personal experience when one waiter must have overheard us talking in Hokkien and then talked to us in Hokkien too which was a pleasant surprise and then chatted to another set of customers in Malay.
For food at this price range- $4-16? it's very worth your money, fast, efficient service ensures that your tummy never grumbles for long, and often one portion of food will feed a person and a quarter/ so it's a good idea to takeaway. It's as if you've been transported to Malaysia/Singapore to eat, when it's really only Australian made meals by authentic Malaysian people.
The only reason why I gave this restaurant 4.5 stars instead of 5 is because I wish the restaurant was bigger!!! And that they had more toilets haha because it's a bit squishy once you get in there.
All in all, I LOVE LOVE LOVE THE FOOD! Recommend to anyone and everyone who is longing for authentic Malaysian food. You won't be disappointed I promise.
Whenever we crave authentic Malaysian food, we make a trip to straits cafe. Best char kuey teow ever! The laksa and egg gravy noodles are pretty darn good as well! Forget modernizing and fusion dishes, give me a big plate of greasy tasty noodles any day!
The best sar hor fun in Melbourne is here! Also their other dishes such as fried glass noodles, char kway teow, fish head noodles, laksa etc are so good. Order their poh piah and/or ngoh hiang to share! Service always friendly too. But get in early as it can be crowded during peak hour.
Wonderful Malaysian cafe close to home. The food here is lovely and flavoursome, and stays true to Malaysian cooking. Prices are reasonable and portions are quite filling. My only issue is that it can be quite heavy and oily, but that is just something I prefer less of.
Nice little local restaurant. The food is quite nice. I like their Hor Fun, great gravy and on the weekends they have a pretty authentic Poh Piah.
Yummy delicious Malaysian food at Wantirna South. Walk quite far from friend house in order to reach this place. Recommend to visit by car. Love the Wat Tan Hor than the char keow teow.

Best value for money Authentic malaysian restaurant- my favourite in Melbourne. Hot the tarik, roti, laksa, salted fish fried rice, hainanese chicken rice, char kway teow and all their specials to name a few are all spot on.
Booked a table on Zomato and on arrival had to wait outside on pavement for 15 awkward minutes due to overbooking. Other people left but we hung in there and are glad we did. Ordered beef rendang, seafood and fried rice. Delicious, cheap and tasty. Service was great. Place is basic but if you like good honest food - you can't go wrong. Loved it loved it
I've been to Straits Cafe many times with my family and the food never disappoints here. They serve authentic Malaysian food which always satisfies your cravings & tastebuds without fail. My favourite dishes to order are their Penang Char Kueh Teow and the Hainanese Chicken Rice. I recommend making reservations in advance as this place gets busy, especially during the weekends. The cafe is not too big hence, it may be a long wait for bigger groups. Always a favourite to go to for the price you pay - definitely better than all of the Malaysian restaurants in Kingsway, Glen Waverley :)
Great flavour, fresh and really well priced. First visit but certainly won't be the last. Certainly very basic decor but it doesn't matter as the food is excellent
Super thumbs up for this place ! Food is so good feels like we have been transported back to Malaysia! Highly recommend char kuay teow and the har mee - the prawn broth was superb!
One of the better Malaysian restaurants in the south eastern suburbs filled with Malaysian eateries. Our go to "eat in" or "take away" local. Really enjoy the consistency of the char kuey teow and the combination hor fun. It helps when you ring and collect food based on a 10 minute drive. Happy to have this in the neighborhood.
Food served was perfect. Service was quick. Excellent. Only downside was restaurant was quite noisy but the quality of the food makes up for this.
Consistently good food, with friendly staff who are speedy and attentive are the highlights of this little gem of a Cafe in the Studfield Shopping strip. If you want to get a table at lunch, be prepared to wait for a few minutes as it is very popular with the locals. Not a fancy place, not an opulent experience, just a good, once a fortnight lunch or early dinner Cafe.

Delicious food. Standouts are kueh teow and sar hor fun. Don't really eat kueh teow anywhere else to be honest but you got to have it spicy if not it can be a bit bland.
Always my 'go to' Malaysian place with the other half as well as fellow food loving friends. Fish head noodles is consistently amazing. Cha kwei teow also good. Banana fritter is pretty good too if you can stomach it after the amazing meals. Cooks and waiting staff helpful and friendly. Must book to be sure you get a seat.
best fried kuey teow ever! generously sprinkled with pork lard - obesity here i come! hubby loves the sar hor fun from here too. highly recommended if you want authentic malaysian food.
Had a nice flavoursome veggie curry with decent roti on the side (not the best I've had but still quite good). Boyfriend had a satisfying Char Kway Teow although it wasn't as big a serving as other places, especially for the price. We'll be back as there's plenty more items on the menu that we'd like to try.

I have been coming here for 8 years now and I LOVE IT.
Pros1. I'm not a stickler for entrees but the lobak is a must-order, its crispy and the ensemble with the sweet chilli dip is amazing. 2. The hor fun is perfect for any occasion, to share with the family or friends or even to take away while watching the Friday night game. The gravy has the right amount of egginess that hor fun should have and you'll find yourself slurping the bowl 3. The har mee is the best, truly the most authentic in Melbourne (so far)4. Cons1. If you come, be sure to book in advance as waiting can be a bit of a nuisance.2. Food can take quite a while to arrive but it's definitely worth the wait.
First time visiting this restaurant, and decided to stopped by with my aunty as she's been to this when it was in Doncaster. We went around 1pm on a Sunday, and were lucky enough to get a table right away. We ordered the char kueh teow and hokkien char mee. Both dishes were tasty and made me feel like I was back in Malaysia. I love the pork crackling pieces in both dishes. Service was quick despite the place being busy. A good place to stop by if you're craving come authentic Malaysian food.
If your in the eastern suburbs and wanting authentic hawker Malaysian food then look no further! Many of their dishes are hard to find in melb, and with their daily specials there is always a variety of choices. I especially enjoy their mee goreng, egg gravy noodles and thick curry laksa. Trust me, this place will def tick all the right boxes!
I love this place!! There's everything for the whole family and food is consistently yummy! Kids & hubby love the chicken rice & lobak. I love everything else in the menu. It's probably the best Malaysian in town!
This has quickly become one of our regular places to eat. Friendly service, authentic Malaysian food and a wide variety to choose from. Highlight dishes are fried Kueh teow, char tang hoon, and sar hor fun. Must try the belachan chicken ribs!!
The asam laksa is probably the most authentic I've had in Melbourne! Lobak and char kuey teow were also nice. Friendly service, will come back again to try other dishes.
We have been coming here for years and we always get great consistent food, this is the best Malaysian food I have ever had and I have travelled to Malaysia.
It's a very busy restaurant, I would recommend booking.
Straits- the 'take away' edition
I ordered the salted fish fried rice, seafood laksa and chicken curry- to go.
To do my meal and the restaurant justice I took photos of the food in containers and on plates (at my house).
I must get my only complaint about this restaurant off my chest immediately- YOU CANNOT PAY BY CARD. There is no EFT minimum. At all.
You may be thinking "but it's 2016, unless they have no electricity, are avoiding tax like the plague, or some other scenario- I can't see why they would require cash only".
I would say in reply, "while I can't comment on the tax question I can confidently tell you that they do in fact have electricity. As for making it exceeding difficult for the digital money generation to pay for their food, I personally can't see the business strategy behind it".
So while the food was quite nice they lose points for being stuck in the dark ages... I had to run to an atm and withdraw cash from the only card I had with me- a credit card đ€
Sar hor fun is great. Char kuey teow is plain for me on 16th Jan. A bit unfortunate since other reviews mentioned great. Worth to try out and be prepared for queues!
Haven't been to Straits Cafe ever since they closed down their shop at Doncaster. Recently through friend and found that they have opened one in Wantirna. Surprisingly, their Char Kwei Teow and Sar Hor Fun is still very very good! Recommended to everyone visiting and also remember to book a table before hand if you do not wish to stuck in a long queue :)

Have been coming here for many years, as it's my closest and oldest local Malaysian restaurant. They're the most consistent restaurant that I've frequented over the years, and how they manage to work their magic with so many staff in a small kitchen earns them my respect. They put up one of the best char kuay teows in Melbourne that I have had so far, and the sar hor fun is far beyond anything I have tried in Australia. If you come here, you must get this dish. Another great thing about this place is the variety and the numerous legit specials. They do all the main Malaysian hawker fare, and the non-mainstream specials like char tang hoon and popiah are very well done. Their murtabak is not the authentic Indian-Malaysian kind, but mannnn so good, works a treat with the pickled onion. Try the coconut ice cream for dessert too. I dread the day the chef moves on or they decide to finish up. This place is a rare delight and I'm lucky to live so close.
My favorite place to indulge in some Seafood Curry Laksa at $12.50 it's an absolute steal. Simple layout may disappoint some but it's about the food anyway!

They are famous for their char kuey teow, which definitely lived up to expectations. Very flavoursome with heaps of toppings and 'wok hei'. You can choose the spiciness level. Beware that their 'medium' is actually spicy!
The char tang hoon was also delicious.
The curry laksa, however, was a bit of a let down. Not very flavoursome and somewhat diluted.
We also sampled their lobak and fried chicken ribs. Both were super tasty; will definitely order again!
The ice cendol wasn't that great, unfortunately. It was quite diluted.

I love the char kuey teow and sar hor fun (both with extra pork fat!!!) - very authentic Malaysian meals! The boss Aaron is super friendly too therefore I come back very often.

Fish head curry is good but not spicy enough for Malaysian style.Singapore Noodles are tasty and filling.Prices are cheap and service is quick.It is an unpretentious venue so Basic.But it is Busy most of the time we have been here.
Was very lucky to secure a table during the lunch time rush. Promptly seated, my order was shortly taken by friendly staff. I ordered the Penang char kueh teow. It didn't take long for my dish to arrive. For $11.50, the portion is generous. I love how the noodles are slightly burnt in the hot wok, adding to the overall flavour and aroma. Chinese sausage, egg, bean sprouts, prawns and other delicious ingredients mixed together with flat noodle. Will definitely be back, but will keep in mind the need to book for peak hours.
my favorite thing to eat here is the char kway teow. it's soooo good! there are surprise pieces of pork crackling. everything else is just above average, just your typical Malaysian food. Straits lost points for cash only payment. Service was pretty good and everything was clean.
Straits Cafe has been a family favourite for years. It may not look like much from the outside, but it serves up some of the best Malaysian food in Melbourne.
The chef is very accommodating and will happily cook up any combination of noodles you fancy. Our favourite combination for SHF is âYin Yongâ which is Rice Vermicelli and Flat Rice Noodles. For CKT, we have pretty much tried all options but we still go back to the classic Flat Rice Noodles again and again. One of my pet peeves is the lack of cockles BUT the presence of nice crunchy pork lard makes up for it forever.
