Review King Wong Chinese Restaurant - Wantirna

Highly recommend this amazing authentic Chinese restaurant! Very competitive pricing and delicious food. I've been here a few times and am always impressed with the quality of food. Very generous and large portions; would definitely recommend going here with some friends and sharing a few dishes. The owners are very kind and welcoming.

I rarely review but Purchased beef and black bean dish as take away 20% of the serve was actually beef while 80% was made up of the cheapest fillers mostly Brussel sprouts/ celery and 3 off cuts of carrot and a broccoli stalk. Special fried rice has 3 ingredients.. don’t bother with that either. $25 wasted very disappointing

Best roast duck in Melbourne. No-nonsense family style Cantonese food. And they make a bloody good 滑蛋牛河

The dry fish fried rice rated 3 of 10. Rice was not fresh and too oily. The porridge was good a 6 of 10 rating. The roast duck on rice was probably the best dish 8 of 10. Skin of the roast duck was crispy and not too fatty. Well done. Service was excellent. Rated by 80yo plus Penang Nyonya Yeoh Sisters.

Had the duck, black bean beef, pork spare ribs and special fried rice. All met or exceeded my expectations for a suburban restaurant, especially the duck.

Horrible customer service ever experienced in Melbourne! The food has flavor but is very salty and in poor quality, they also used cheap cooking oil. Fry Dumpling over cooked, asked waiters or waitress about this but they claimed it’s their Hongkong style cooking! In fact it tastes like rubbish food if it’s in Hongkong. Their service make me feel disgusting.

Ordered a meal from here two nights in a row. Both times the order was cancelled without notice and resulted in us being contracted by delivery drivers asking what had happened. A very confusing and unprofessional experience. Restaurant staff member we spoke to was extremely rude and appeared to imply that the cancellation was our fault… Despite us waiting here patiently for a meal which never arrived. I’ve never eaten here and after this unpleasant affair, I never will.
Peter Allen
Over priced average food. The female boss is just rude. If you place a order they always charge you for extra food you didn't order. Wouldn't recommend at all. Never going back.

This place is a little gem! We reserved the lobster sashimi for the night and I was impress that we could find such nice quality in here! The lobster is fresh and just so good! Then we had lobster noodles which had large portion and was amazing. we also ordered the sweet and sour pork, it was crunchy and tasty. Will definitely come back!

Prawns noodles were fresh and tasty, sweet and sour pork was tender and crunchy. Worth a visit, service was friendly and good. Fish was very fresh and not overcooked. Beef dish was generous but a tad too big. Will be back.

Food was ok, for a outer suburban Chinese restaurant. Their lobster in ginger spring onion with egg noodle base was good. Service typical of a Chinese restaurant. Emotionless faces like life hates them. Would go back for the lobster, everything else was just ok.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why the guy behind the counter has so much disdain for everyone and everything that comes through the door. The food is alright but I always feel so uncomfortable coming in to pick up my order and it feels like it's getting worse.<br/><br/>Today I called in advance, came in 20 mins later and wait 3 mins before this guy comes out with obnoxious derpface and says "What you after". I mention that I called earlier, he says "15.80".<br/><br/>That's it. No hi, no thank you, no goodbye, nothing. I said thank you as I left and got nothing back. You can't run a business in Australia, heck go work in a factory if the thought of speaking makes you want to kill yourself.

Came here for a quick meal after a busy day. Arrived after the lunch rush and the restaurant was empty. We entered the restaurant and noticed a strange smell...it smelt very musty and unpleasant. We noticed that it looked like the floor hadn’t been vacuumed in ages. We had a noodle dish and a bbq pork/soy chicken on rice. Both dishes were pretty average, our rice dish was just heated up in the microwave as we were very close to the preparation area and could see everything. The noddle dish was very bland and not great. Would I be back? Probably not

Dishes to try: special fried rice, roast pork<br/><br/>Decent Hong Kong roast restaurant. It's a good option if you're visiting the area for the more popular straits cafe but have no cash.<br/><br/>Cheap fried rice and very tasty.

I went there to buy some roast pork then walked out in 2 minutes. Once I entered the restaurant, the rather young bloke at the counter pointed me the menu which sticks on the counter bench. I don't need to read through the whole lengthy menu when I saw the pork hanging behind him. So I asked him the cost of takeaway roast pork, then his response was somewhat I never expected. He rudely pointed the menu again and replied (quote his exact word) "YOU NOT KNOW ENGLISH?" <br/><br/>Then I walked out of course. No wonder there was only 2 tables during the lunch time. Who would come back to this kind of manner.

Probably won't come back to King Wong again. A few times I have bought Char Siu, roast duck etc to take home and found that it was passable.<br/><br/>Today, my wife and I popped in for a real quick lunch deal and to get some Char Siu for dinner.<br/><br/>Only ordering 2 noodle dishes, they took quite a long time to come out. We note it does appear to be very much a family run restaurant run for local Cantonese patrons. King Wong is not going to wow you with a beautiful visual dining experience or silver service. You are there to eat and to leave. That's about it.<br/><br/>We were about to leave without the eating part, when our dishes finally came out. It was pretty much as expected. Serviceable Cantonese fare without much care. It wasn't bad food at all, just nothing I can go back for even at the cheap price point.<br/><br/>We ate and bought some Char Siu to go. On trying to pay using EFT, I was fairly rudely told to pay cash, even with the eftpos machine right there on the counter. I asked if the machine was working, to be told that all lunch specials are cash only.<br/><br/>Anyway, I didn't have cash, but I had bought Char Siu so at a total of $41 I insisted we had made sufficient expenditure to justify EFT.<br/><br/>The lady gruffly said OK, but "You pay cash next time".<br/><br/>"Certainly" , I said. Knowing there won't be a next time.<br/><br/>As we left, I noted the menu pasted on the window with small text saying that lunch specials are cash only. So in their defence, the policy is listed. However, it would be easier to just have a minimum spend listed for EFT like most places do where with a $41.00 transaction, there should never be a problem.

Love: their 小炒王, taro chess dish, steamed pork patty<br/><br/>Not so likey: deep fried milk, pan fried sticky rice <br/><br/>Service is good, the food came quite quickly

Came here on saturday because we felt like some fried noodles after a big night and boy did we regret it!. We got here at 11am and it was barely opened even though the sign said 11am opening time. We then had to seat our selves and get our own menu. I ordered a combination noodle and my partner order roast pork on dry noodles with an iced tea. Upon ordering the server yelled dry noodle extra $2 and there is no iced tea, even though there was iced tea on the menu. The server spoke to us in the most rude and obnoxious tone. This guy is a total prick! After our meals came we asked for chilli oil to go with our noodles. He said ok but never brought the chilli oil out and proceeded to sit down the back with the chefs to enjoy his lunch. Food was ok my serving was a bit small for $15 and my partners roast pork was more salty than usual. Absolutely one of the worst dining experiences i have had in a long time.

Felt like roast so came in here to try for lunch. Ordered a roast pork with dry noodles "dry noodles?" "Yes" "$2 extra !" Ok that's fine. Ordered an iced tea "we don't have iced tea" "ok but it says here on the me-" "I said we don't have !" Alright no probs. Food comes out "can I please have some chilli oil?" "Ok" guy then walks past us and sits down and proceeds to eat his lunch? Ok so no chilli oil then. Went to pay at the counter "next time you come you pay cash ! We don't take card during lunch". Sorry buddy but there won't be a next time. Shame because the noodles were cooked beautifully, roast was a tad too salty though.

Tasty food and good value for money at lunch times. Only $10 for a large bowl of rice and siew yoke. Food quality varies depending on the day and can be extremely good or vice versa. Relatively expensive at dinner times.
MF
Ordered their pork in sweet n sour sc and stir fry tomiao with garlic (forgot to take pic), both were good, the garlic on the tomiao was strong flavoured and the vinegar was strong on the sweet and sour sc but didnt overpower the taste.<br/>Service was excellent.

$100 for 1 crab for 2 people - does that sound right?<br/>The veggies we ordered were nicely cooked. The crab was not bad but I definitely think they weighed it by eye rather than using a scale.
Cynthia Giang
Can be a hit or a miss. <br/><br/>The pork crackling is generally quite good, but there are times when the seasoning is poor. The staff/<br/>management team make the dining experience far less enjoyable. Rude, and very dismissive. Only come here when I have to.

Have eaten here twice and had numerous take-away meals. Can't possibly give this place another chance. The food is heavily laden with too much MSG to the point where you feel really unwell for hours after. The staff are nice but that's all it has going for it.

We got takeaway from there for the first time this week, and it was the worst Chinese food i've ever eaten. The fried rice was horrible and the dim sims and soup were cold. This is just my opinion of course.
Ian Sunderman
Worst Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. Dirty and greasy front kitchen for serving duck and pork. Staff were arrogant and rude. Worst service ever. I will never ever go there again.

I've ordered take away from here for the last year. I have always found the service to be fast and efficient. The food of good quality and tasty. No complaints.
Cheena Saini
the managment is soo shit here , went to order takeaway at 9pm an hour before closing , order a deep fried wonton and soup the guy refused to take a order saying its too less and these  no where mentioned minimum order .

None food related review but definitely exceptional service. I was there for dinner tonight and my toddler decided to be difficult on me. While she was clinging on to me almost the whole duration, there was a short period of time where she got off and starting digging through my bag which was on her high chair. Dinner ended and as usual I looked around and checked if I took everything before I left. All clear. At 1030pm there was loud banging on my door. Continuously. For a moment I started panicking and was wondering if these were decent people outside. I peeped and saw a couple of men, trying to shine the torch through and when I stepped into the light they were saying "this is the woman". I was thinking is that the police and did I commit a crime I didn't know about??!! Or was this an emergency? Was my neighbour in danger? I opened the door and they told me they were from King Wong restaurant and that I was there for dinner tonight. They explained that I dropped my licence and they were here to return it. And then... They also returned a pouch of cash which was dropped at the same time. I'm absolutely touched and I cannot thank the staff and management enough for taking the extra mile to drive to where I live and banged on the door like it was an emergency...just to return my drivers licence and my money. Thank you so much King Wong restaurant. Your gesture and honesty is truly appreciated.

Some-King-Wong here. Been there several times but no longer. Got massive MSG poisoning here after telling them 'I want no MSG'. Terrible service for takeaway, should be shut down.

TAKE AWAY KING WONG<br/><br/>I tried to get some food from here a while ago, but even though I called during 'open hours' I was informed that the chef had just stepped out, and they suggested I call later. But since I was sitting out front in my car I didn't find that suitable. <br/>I stomped around nearby looking for sustenance. <br/><br/>MOVING ON- this time around, I was able to secure calamari, curry chicken stir fry and special fried rice. Gotta admit it was pretty killer- especially the curry stir fry. Calamari was not bad, a 3.5/5. <br/><br/>I breathed a sign of relief when I realised I could pay for my meal by EFT. Unlike a not dissimilar restaurant situated a stones throw from here. Still mad about that...

Exceeded expectations. Dishes were sizable for the price, table of 7 with 5 mains, left very satisfied. We enjoyed the fried chicken ribs, seafood claypot, roast pork.

The food was alright but was very disappointed at their service. The first time we went that lady took the wrong order and when we asked she insisted that it was the right one. The second time we went to order a take away sweet and sour pork rice. I asked if he could separate the meat from the rice as I will be having it as late lunch and doesn't want the rice soaked up in the gravy. He was very reluctantly to do it saying that it will be very troublesome to separate the packing. Then I handed him a $50 note for a $10 rice. He was very unhappy about it as it requires him to return the change. I will not return to this restaurant in the future.

Will never return. $18.80 for a bowl of wonton noodle soup. Overpriced! Noticed at the end, the receipt had completely different dish - shredded pork something? When I mentioned to the cashier, he said that's same price anyway. <br/>Rude and overpriced.
The Pierced Palate
Very disappointed with the food & especially the service. Will never return! Ventured out here to try their food & ordered 2 roasts on rice. I ordered the duck & BBQ sweet pork but the young man replied that I cant choose the duck because it was still whole & if he cuts it up, he might not sell it & the whole duck will have to go to waste. Fair enough & understandable if it was 3pm in the afternoon when I ordered that, but I was there at 11.30am in the morning, just before lunch service & that was the excuse he gave me. So I asked if was able to get the chicken & pork & he replied with the same answer that he dosent want to cut the chicken up. So I had to get 2 pork roast on rice. Now for the food. I asked him before hand if the rice was fragrant & tasty like the Hainanese chicken rice & he said yes. Got back, opened up my lunch, tasted the rice & it was just plain rice that was oily. As for the roast, the BBQ Sweet pork was very dry & chewy & the pork belly was just acceptable. Asked for chili & only got a tub full of oil with freckles of chili flakes at the bottom. Will not recommend nor go back there anymore.

Beware!!!  These guys are scammers!!<br/>I took my family here last night and had a terrible experience.  These guys are scammers!<br/><br/>I had never been there, but it was a recommendation, so I thought I’d give it a go. There was a $88 set menu (5 dishes of our choice and rice) that a friend had told me about. When we sat down, I told them I want the $88 deal, and she said she didn’t know what I was talking about. She said they have a $98 deal which was 1 crab and 3 dishes to share. I thought ok, close enough….let’s do that<br/><br/>10 mins after we ordered, my dad spoke to the same lady again and said we were sure that our friend had the $88 deal recently. Then she said yes, they have that deal. What the? We asked to change it and she said no, it’s too late. I was pretty angry that she scammed us into ordering a more expensive set menu and my dad doesn’t even eat crab!<br/><br/>Anyway, we just accepted it. At the end, I went to pay with my credit card and the guy told me to pay cash. I said I don’t have any and he had EFTPOS right there! The guy told me to walk down the street to the ATM. He was so rude about it too. I told him no. I have a credit card and I have no other way to pay. My dad came over and paid for it in cash. I was pretty annoyed. I did a nice thing by taking my family out and now my dad has to pay? Also being scammed into a meal we didn’t want and the credit card topped it off! Never again!<br/><br/>I don’t understand how restaurants would just try to scam customers like that. I’m definitely not going back here again. This is just not acceptable!

Food's good but staff (???). Like the roast duck and deep fried tofu. Normally, Chinese restaurant with good food are staffed by TH owner who tend to provide shocking customer service. Hence not surprised by the attitude of the staffs here, buy there is this young fellow, who always look after the cashier..too young yo be the owner, yet acting like one. If the owner is reading this review, find yourself a better behaving front desk person and i can guarantee your business will flourish even more!

Heard they have a Darwin mud crab promotion to celebrate their 4th anniversary. $13:80 per lb for next two weeks

I had the roasted duck n crab with noodles. Simply loved it. Finished everything on the plate. Service was so so...but I guess they were manpower shortage. Good food is always 1st priority to me. I am already craving for the duck.

Avoid this place like the plague. I should have sensed things were dodgy at this place when the staff member at the register ran my $50 note through their Counterfeit Detector machine. Am I in Australia? I ordered take away and asked for "No MSG" which was passed on to the cook. I have a bad allergic reaction if I have MSG in high doses, so I always avoid it altogether. What did I get? Enough MSG to kill an elephant. Sick for 2 days and off work. Disgraceful. This place should be shut down.

Great BBQ meat. Most of the food is typical standard for chinese food, by no means anything special. But take some BBQ meat home, this they do very very well. Enough to earn them a like from me.

Food always great here, duck, pork and seafood a specialty. Dine in and takeaway both good options. Prices are very reasonable and service good. Don't be put off by the lack of conversation from the wait staff. If you want 5 star service go to Flower Drum.

Mixed Feeling. We went there twice and we got mixed feeling. The first time, we ordered some BBQ pork and duck and my wife liked them very much. They were authentic and delicious. The second time however, we tried something different than typical Cantonese style, something supposed to be spicier and sharper, and I have to say the dishes disappointed. Given what they usually charge, it is unlikely we will go there again, unless we limit our choice to what they are capable of.
Sondrel.pirera
Beautiful food. I am very fussy when it comes to Chinese food and finally have found this place. Great take away prices . My husband and I love everything we have tried to date. This is our regular Chinese take away place.
John
This is a horrible place to order a take away. The waiter has an unhappy face. I ordered stir fried crispy noodles with chicken, but they gave just noodles. When I asked, they just complain that it's crispy and refuse to change. What a crap!
Joanna Lo
Food was better then expected, service was not as bad as it was claimed to be. Loved the roasted duck! Overall had a delightful experience. Will def come back

Overpriced and so not worth it .... I agree with the previous comment in regards to the person at the front counter as rude and not being very attentive to customers right in front of him. Not a single word except pointing his finger to the bill. In regards to the food, there's so much msg that you probably need a gallon of water just to wash it down. The duck with sweet and sour sauce had a lot more of flour on the meat than the meat itself which would probably also explain why the sauce was so thick. Definitely very pricey for the dishes. Only ended up at this restaurant because the other eatery places on the street was closed. Will not be going back here.
Vin
Very poor service. Guy at the front counter was extremely rude when I was asking him about price difference on my order. You should never raise your voice when a customer ask why the price is different from the menu. Bad attitude from start to the end
Weina Hsieh Tan
Over greasy fried items. Below par steamed yumcha dishes. BBQ pork buns that were dry like cardboard. Veges that were old and hard it was like chewing on sticks. Never again.
Annie_tran23
Worst service. I've never been one to write bad reviews about places but for me to actually go home and make an account is saying something about this place. Absolutely disgraceful customer service and all they care about is the money from your pocket. Average food at its best. Never will come back to this place and I recommend to anyone considering going, to NOT. There's definitely better places to go to.
David
King Wrong! Give this place.... King Wrong!<br/>Give this place a wide berth people. <br/>Went an ordered combination with fried rice lunch box and the lady said $12.90 - thought that was a bit steep considering most lunch box deals are around the $8 mark. When the meal was ready I looked and just saw every day fried rice. I asked where the meat and vegetables were and she insisted this was combination with fried rice! $12.90 for bland every day fried rice lunch box is a rip off.<br/>Place smells of mold and mildew also...

Hail to the King. If you like Hong Kong style and don't want to go all the way to Hong Kong, this restaurant is not so bad. Now, it can't really compare with HK, (Which is outstanding) BUT, overall for value flavour and service, it better that what you would find in Knox Shopping area, which has disappointed many times.<br/><br/>Service: Good<br/>Staff: Good<br/>Food: Very Good<br/>Prices: Average<br/>Authenticity: 5 dumpling out of 8<br/>Coffee: N/A<br/>Décor: Average

Great Chinese food, great servings and plenty of nice seafood. Peking Duck is the only let down on the menu here, would rate as average. My regular Chinese when in need.
