Review Altair Restaurant - Warrandyte

Rein Dorland
Very professional, had a great evening at altair. First time but I will absolutely come back more often. I would describe this as a Food Experience! The food served is a bit different And I enjoyed it a LOT. The best way is to go with the 5 or 8 course dinner. You get small servings, but at the end you had a full meal! It is about the Taste sensation, a little journey of flavors and textures etc so to say. If you want half a cow go somewhere else. The waiters are super attentive and explain with each serving what you will be eating. This was a fine dinning experience! The only (little) remark I have but would be easy for them to fix is that with a reasonable full restaurant the ambient sound is a bit to loud . This could be fixed with some sound insulation panels installed here and there etc. I am glad I found this place :-)

The food was really good. We had the wagyu cheek, the oysters, chickpea fries and finished off with the poached rhubarb dessert. They all tasted amazing. The portion size for the mains we're quite small but the waiters do give you the heads up on it before ordering. There was no high chair available for kids.

Have had a lovely Sunday breakfast here a number of times but got taken for lunch today. Amazing flavours and excellent service! Lamb neck sounded a little confronting, even to this carnivore, but it was stunning. Next special occasion, wedding anniversary, I will not hesitate to go the degustation menu (which will be my first).

Food was amazing, staff were really friendly and attentive, great atmosphere. Perfect night.

Wow! What a special lunch! Really interesting and diverse dishes using native and seasonal ingredients. Service was wonderful too. A must try!

Nice place with fantastic food. Highly recommend to have a try. The service and quality is beyond the price. Really appreciate their love and attitude for food.

Michelle was an amazing host, who was so passionate about all of the dishes we tried, the most unique locally inspired Australian menu I have experienced, outstanding quality and combination of ingredients.along with an extensive list of Australian and local wines. Seemed to have plenty of space between tables we had a table in a private corner which was perfect for our lunch. I have left an absolute fan of Altair and would highly recommend this place based on my experience.

The highest standard of dining I have personally encountered. Truly amazing food. I have never had the desire to pull my phone out and take a picture of a dish until I visited this place. Seriously impressive. The presentation of each dish, the quality of the produce, the flavours - all outstanding. If you are a serious foodie and like your fine dining, put a three course meal at Altair on your bucket list.
The Wandering Reviewer
It's been 4 and a half years since I last reviewed Altair and in that time, the food, service and atmosphere has continued to be outstanding.<br/>With my first ever Valentine's Day dinner which I booked while overseas, we sat down to a Chef's 7 Course dinner with wine that complemented the food.<br/>A dinner like this is a true culinary experience and with each course, you are given a lovely explanation of what you're eating and the wine they've chosen to match. <br/>To start with we had trout and cauliflower tart, row, dill, seaweed, viola - two bites of beautifully blended flavours that along with the Junmai Ginjo wine set the benchmark for the night.<br/>Course No. 2 was charred scallops, chorizo, dried olive, wild dill, olive plant with a very light Fiano from Heathcote. I'm not much of a seafood fan but I could've had a couple of servings of these scallops. Light and delicate with a fresh bite from the chorizo.<br/>Course No. 3 was swordfish, ceviche, roie gras, misco, kohirabi with a lovely wood Katherine's Paddock Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley. Having recently returned from South America were I'd eaten alot of ceviche - this made my experiences there look amateurish.<br/>Course No. 4 was probably my favourite but alas it was the lamb which I'll write about shortly. Quail ballotine, red cabbage, barley, fried mushrooms, garam masala and a Gewurztraminer from Freycinet in Tasmania. Deboned quail that just kept on giving me more with each small bite. Anymore than the portion served and I would've felt overindulged. <br/>Course No. 5 was roasted baby carrots, lardo, pork floss, nori & wakame macadamia butter with a superb Grenache from McLaren Vale. Perfectly cooked with a touch of crispy that blended well with the macadamia butter.<br/>Course No. 6 was corned lamb, labna, saltbush raisins, sumac, wild dill and ash. Surprise for us was the 2016 Altair Syrah blended especially by Michelle the owner. Keep your eye on this one people. The blend was excellent.<br/>By now we are on a total foodie high and along with other diners who we were chatting with, started to pace ourselves for the upcoming desserts.<br/>Goats milk pannacotta, honey, grilled figs, pollen, honeycomb with a Cuvee Crut Cava had us almost ready to give up our day jobs and work as kitchen hands. Then followed by french toast, maple, berries and brown butter ice cream with a Late Harvest Riesling. Does it get any better? Nope! This was dining at it's best.<br/>But wait. There's more. No not steak knives. There was engaging conversation with locals and non locals who were also there celebrating Valentine's Day. There was the delightful waiting staff always floating in and around the tables making sure their guests glasses were full, plates swept away after empty and topping up our water. Michelle is a 'hands on' owner who clearly knows her stuff when it comes to wine, food and ambience. Nice lighting, good room temperature and even the wafting aroma of wild lemon myrtle coming from the bathrooms made it all feel surreal.<br/>10 our of 10 Altair and all staff, chefs and owners. A Valentine's Day to remember. How am I ever going to face a pizza again?<br/>Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. High chair available. Clean toilets. Parking available on Yarra Street or on side streets. Dietaries catered for. Wifi - who cares because you'll be indulging yourself in a food experience like no other. <br/><br/>

Open for breakfast 9-12 Saturday and Sunday. I love the menu, with some old favourites and some new/ interesting dishes. My long black was perfect and the Bloody Mary was terrific. Great service, nice decor and ambience. Will definitely come back.

Decided to pop in here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Restaurant looked great, very elegant. We were introduced to the menu and it was interesting. Rather than the degustation, we decided to go alacarte. We had the abalone with squid ink pasta, cured salmon, barbecued carrots, forcilized pumpkin, corned lamb, duck and finished with the dark chocolate tart with burnt fig ice cream. Overall, a really good meal and well paced. Wonderful place for an occasion.

Hmmm, 4 stars, probably not fair to rate as a 3. <br/>Now I am a harsh as I’ve only ever been to one place I consider 5 stars and it just so happens that Altair is remarkably similar in style with their approach to the wide variety of ingredients they use to present these fantastic meals. We enjoyed a 5 course experimental menu with some really tasty courses and probably only one that was not as delicious as the rest. To their defence it was experimental and that’s the reason they provide the occasions to test out new things. Was a pleasure to dine here and we can definitely recommend this as somewhere to experience genuine fine dining, which is somewhat rare this far out. Put it on your wish list.
A Beautiful Brocade
A hidden suburban gem! Food was creatively put together and well plated. Good differentiation from regular restaurants. Service was excellent. The two of us shared 6 entrees plus dessert and all dishes were very good. Worth the trip to Warrandyte!

Wow! What a special lunch! Really interesting and diverse dishes using native and seasonal ingredients. Each dish was sensational with very unique flavours. Service was wonderful too. A must try!

The ideas were amazing, the use of local and native ingredients was fascinating... but considering the high rating on zomato, the overall execution and experience didnt quite meet up to the review score. We had the 5 course menu. The appetiser was slow cooked pork knuckle which was deep fried. Sounded good, looked good. Was so oily and it when the oil dissolved, it was super sticky. To the point I had to go to the bathroom to get the bits out of my teeth. Some of the native berries had very hard seeds, which you had no idea until you bit into it. The kangaroo was served in a shallow bowl... made it hard to cut. Little details like that dampened the whole experience a little.

Definetely more like 4.5 stars. Amazing ambience and staff. We had a 6 course meal which was like so good, as if like I was having the best meal of my life at the moment and all with so good Australian native ingredients. It was a really good experience and each dish was so properly seasoned and presented. Specially the cured Barramundi, it was like on a whole different level.<br/>
Gourmet Explorer
Very good environment, nice service, well presented dishes, and amazing taste. We ordered the 2 courses light lunch including tea or coffee for $36 pp. the kangaroo cooked just on the right time, excellent.

We just happened upon this restaurant as we travelled out to the Yarra Valley from Melbourne. We are very glad! The menu is an extraordinarily accomplished balance of Indigenous and European foods achieving fascinating textures and combinations of flavour. I liked the structure of the menu which offers an array of entree sized dishes to mix and match. My favourite was the Spanner crab with fermented grains. My husband particularly loved the emu ham abalone and nettles. Service was friendly well informed and efficient. It was a treat to be attended by the owner and to discuss the philosophy of this owner chef and front of house team. We also found the wine list complemented the food very well
Mr Mystery
A complete miss... We went here for my B-day and it was very disappointing. They try too much to be a fine dining place and thats where they go wrong. To many many different tastes that do not blend. They try to make simple meals too complicated which doesn't bring out the best in meats, like the Kangaroo dish. It's way overpriced considering the quality of the food. Service is very good, staff is very attentive. Although it's a very cozy place, we're not coming back.
Gee
This is a high end restaurant that concentrates on using obscure and locally sourced produce. The menu is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.<br/><br/>*******<br/><br/>Fine dining in Warrandyte! Popped in for lunch and they have a $29 lunch special which is two courses and a coffee. Soup had lentils, mushroom and onions and was interesting! Main was a choice of risotto or salmon roullets (?). It was enjoyable and definitely worth coming back to eat a la carte. Nice fitout and knowledgeable waitress.

Excellent food (a little expensive though) - nice place - good and friendly service -  parking a bit difficult! - chairs a little uncomfortable, the front rail digs into your legs.... a bit noisy with hard walls and a low ceiling - a bit overzealous with re-filling your water glasses..... <br/>ANNOYING Problem with BYO though..... you can take whatever wine you want - no problem....<br/>But if you take your own Beer then they don't like that - Want to charge you $10 a stubbie when there is a perfectly good bottleshop just a few doors down the road....<br/>Apart from these minor issues it was Very Good.

This place just keeps getting better. We went back again last weekend and had one of the best meals we've had anywhere. You can be brave and try even the quirkiest ingredients knowing they will do it so well. And always excellent service to compliment the food and atmosphere.

Brilliant service, exquisite tasting plate, Michelin Star service in Warrandyte. A Special occasion venue! Take your significant other for a wonderful evening<br/>Tim

They need a new butcher, worst rump ever and overpriced.....pity because staff were great and first impressions were encouraging, downhill from starter onwards

Amazing experience last night. We had the 8 course chef’s menu (there is a smaller 5 course one) and wines and couldn’t fault it. Each dish was beautiful and tasty and the wines were fun & interesting. We particularly enjoyed their Altair Shiraz. We left very satisfied.
Jodie Hamel
Service was good but we got asked for water 10 times in 5 minutes. The servings were so small and it took so long for each course to come out.

I have enjoyed two meals at Altair recently.  Firstly with friends, for lunch.  Service managed the right amount of friendly and professional.  I love the touch of colour-coded glasses for water.  I can't tell you how many times at other places I have had my sparkling water topped up with tap water by mistake.  I like my tap water, but generally not mixed with bubbles.<br/><br/>At the time we visited, there was an option of two courses for $29.00 - that is to say, two of the lunch dishes, in slightly smaller portions than a main and slightly larger than a starter.  We all went with this and had a variety of tastes.  Dishes are all glamerous, and generally well-flavoured.  Not everyone loved their dishes, but it was all enjoyed.  <br/><br/>I returned a few days later with my oldest for breakfast.  I can go into more detail here than I can when I was sharing bubbly with my friends.<br/><br/>We shared the Fruit, nut & coconut muesli, what with me being a sucker for passionfruit and my daughter much the same about coconut.  It was delicious and I am sure we felt it doing us good.  So then we indulged!  I had the Eggs Benedict which was the classic version of poached eggs on toast, with very good quality ham & hollandaise.  Perfect poached googs too.  Miss went with the Nardin anchovy & quinoa stuffed tomato, anchovy bavarois, poached egg & toast.  The stuffing of the tomato was quite potent, just a bit too strong.  The rest was enjoyed.<br/><br/>The chai latte here is great, the flavour is all in the pot, and a great flavour it is too.<br/><br/>On a quiet Sunday, with nothing but trees out the window, it's not a bad way to spend some time.

Wonderful front of house, food and wine match is perfection, the best restaurant around this area by far. <br/>The food is unusual but amazing, trialing different ingredients that just work. Would highly recommend. Been back three times already...

In the culinary void of the outer eastern suburbs, Altair is one of the few restaurants to proudly market itself as a fine dining restaurant. I have never been to a restaurant that tries so hard. It's staff and owner are super-attentive, the decor is very nice (but not overdone- and the lighting is perfect) and the menu is imaginative and beautifully cooked. My wife had the degustation with matching wine - which was paired perfectly.<br/><br/>Altair is a lovely restaurant and well worth a drive to Warrandyte.
Mark
Had a lovely dinner experience here. Staff were get friendly and attentive and although the food was good and not amazing, it as very well presented. Atmosphere was very relaxed and enjoyable as well
Stephen Cassim
Not enough food and staff although efficient were a bit overbearing. The food was nice and I'm not a big eater but the plate sizes were ridiculously small left starving hungry and felt ripped off
Meg
We had a spectacular meal here on a Saturday night. Five people, three courses each and every single bite was thoughtfully created, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The staff are knowledgeable and relaxed and the wine list is pretty impressive. Lovely interiors and with every table full it was buzzing - maybe a little loud for some people. $500 for 5 people including 3 courses & wine. Highly recommended.

I don't wanna give Altair a review as I'm scared it could be more busy -;) To be honest since I'm in Melbourne I never had such a great and awesome dinner, no loud music, not busy, lovely team, beautiful atmosphere. And the most important thing not in the stupid CBD where thousands of people are. And the dishes are absolutely outstanding and amazing. I wish we can go there every weekend -;) This restaurant gives me a feeling of european home. Deeply Thank you for such a great birthday dinner!
Amy
We came on a Saturday night and had the tasting menu. The presentation of all 7 dishes were spectacular and immaculate. Highlights were the Miso glazed salmon (which simply disintegrated in my mouth) and the kangaroo with the fried sage leaves, pigs ears  and cherry (the balance of flavours and textures were spot on). Let-downs were the saltiness of the salmon dish (completely over-powered all other flavours) and the Waltzing Matilda dessert (absolutely loved the creativity and concept behind it but I found the flavours just didn't work together). I also found the herb ice cream very unique, creative and refreshing. <br/>Service was attentive and warm. LOVED the ambiene of the place. It was a lovely experience overall.

The flavors from each and every element on each and every dish from this restaurant was incredible. This would have to be my favourite restaurant now. From the atmosphere to the service, the complementary starters to the desert. My only slight is that they offer you water when you arrive but fail to tell you that it is bottled water they you have to pay for. Other than that though, I would recommend this place in a heartbeat<br/>!

I visited Altair for a spot of brunch.<br/>We ordered the Eggs Benedict and it came with a perfect, freshly made hollandaise & deliciously crunchy sourdough. <br/>Service was very attentive and the muted tones of the restaurant interior helped create a refined and formal atmosphere. <br/>Visit for beautiful restaurant style brunch in lovely surrounds.

This is such a gem in Warrandyte. We had the seven course degustation and each course was very interesting with native Australian ingredients. Each course had different elements in it and was such a delight to eat. The restaurant ambience was good and toilet was clean. The service was attentive and its always lovely when the staff are cheerful and smiling.
Rabbit & Turtle
We dined at this restaurant a couple of months ago and have not been able to forget the wonderful dining experience. We flew in from Sydney to visit the Yarra and came across this little hidden gem.<br/>The food was amazing . The rabbit was one of the mains and not only was it delicious but the amount of effort from the chef on the presentation of this dish was very impressive.<br/>The wine list is also very extensive. A big shout out to the owner Michelle. She not only was very accommodating for our late arrival due to flight delays but also conjured up a great list of wineries for us to visit as it was our first time in the Yarra.<br/>Will definitely come back to visit if we are in Victoria!

After the stress of shopping with my 'better half' which I hate, i had to get out of town for a late lunch so what better place than Warrandyte on a beautiful summer day. <br/>As usual we consulted Zomato as to where we should eat and Altair was clearly the classiest restaurant in town. Michelle welcomed us with a smile and a comprehensive wine list. We ordered the lamb and the barramundi and both dishes were unique in their preparation and delectable in their flavor.<br/>Thanks Michelle for helping me unwind!! We look forward to catching up in the New Year

Amazing food. Staff are so attentive and really care about your experience. Will definitely be back! And actually a decent coffee at the end too.

Fine dining , not a huge menu but beautifully presented food using quality produce. Wonderful desserts. Prompt, professional service . On the more expensive side but worth it .
Kirsten
This the perfect combination of delicious food, great service set in a warm and friendly environment. None of this early and late sitting so you have to scoff your food and run. Tranquil eating were you are encouraged to enjoy what you are eating. The flavours of the dishes was exceptional...no disappointments. The wine list excellent.will return!

SPECIAL NIGHT – RUINED<br/><br/>We were celebrating a special occasion at Altair, where we decided to go all out and ordered the 8 course degustation menu. We expected to be delighted and impressed by a carefully curated and inspired array of dishes. What we did get instead was deeply disappointed. We got served soupy and tepid food from the start to finish. Some astringent ‘consomme’ as the amuse bouche. Followed by some other dishes which were served cold and drenched in liquid of some sort (either as a sauce or a ‘tea’), then 2 courses of plain vegetables – beetroot, then undercooked carrot. As this was progressing, we were thinking – where is the freshly cooked main courses? We got ONE solitary dish as the main protein – a small piece of kangaroo fillet served underwarm in some pretentious arrangement which was particularly tart. And then 2 dishes as dessert. Rice pudding reminding me of breakfast, and some puddle of chocolate mousse, which was drenched with orange syrup. As I said, it started wet, and ended wet. No real texture or arc to the whole experience. No real cooking. Everything was either cold or luke warm. To top it off, all the wait staff, save the manager, were young and inexperienced, fumbling drink orders, and rushing with the description of the chef’s “creation”. So much for a great night out. We left regretting the decision to choose this establishment to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Never again.

Fabulous service, excellent wine menu and top notch food! Since discovering this hidden gem, we have frequented Altair for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We love the interesting menu, extensive wine list and service with a smile. A must try in Warrandyte!

On a very quiet Wednesday night we took our new car down to warrandyte for a test drive and celebratory dinner. I would never have realised that there was a decent quality fine dining option out there had it not been for my trusty Entertainment Book. We had a late dinner so we didn't opt for the 2.5h tasting menu but went for main, sides and a dessert to share. The food was delicious, well seasoned and served promptly. I had slight food envy because I liked the barramundi more than the tuna I had chosen. They also had a great selection of craft beers which made husband very happy and a decent wine list to boot. <br/><br/>Dishes:<br/>-MAIN-<br/>Asian style confit tuna<br/>Barramundi with celeriac purée <br/><br/>-SIDES-<br/>Chickpea chips <br/>Radicchio salad<br/><br/>-DESSERT-<br/>"Apple crumble" with wild berry sorbet and bush apples<br/><br/>Altair does a $29 quick lunch during the week which would be great to try but I think I'll just have to visit on the weekend and try the tasting menu. Excellent food. Excellent service. We will definitely be returning!!! I had the wild boar and it was tender, delicious and matched beautifully with the recommended wine.

Absolutely fantastic service, food and drinks. My missus even liked the cocktails which is saying alot.<br/>We'll be back. Nicely done people..

Sooo much flavour. Lovely service. Vegetarian friendly. Lovely atmosphere. Great wine list. Can recommend the steak dish and the barramundi dish.

I went to Altair with my mum and did the tasting menu. It was certainly a night to remember! The food was extraordinary, the staff were extremely friendly and knowledgable, and I loved the atmosphere, music that was playing, it wasn't too loud so you could have a conversation. The dishes were all a masterpiece. One thing on the menu I thought sounded strange, a rose infused tofu but it was amazing, one of my favourites! My only small complaint is that the heater was on much too high but not an issues. Amazing food and service, can't wait to come back to try the next tasting menu!<br/><br/>Edit: I came here a second time for breakfast. Staff were lovely and the food was fine, but nothing special like the dinner<br/><br/>Edit edit: breakfast round 2 was amazing!!!

High class dining with high class food and drinks. Absolutely loved this place. From the service, the atmosphere, the main meals, the deserts. All perfect.

A truly culinary experience, the hostress was very polite and attentative. Every dish tastes great and well balanced with fantastic presentation. At $29 for 2 course is definitely worth every cents. Hats down to you !

OMG this is seriously good. A totally unexpected fine dining experience 15 minutes from my home. Very much worthy of a rare 5 out of 5 for me. <br/><br/>A lot of care and skill goes each meal. My entree of quail was perfectly balanced, flavour and texture. My main of Wild Boar was exquisite. The deserts were to die for. My family also were suitably impressed. <br/><br/>The service was engaging, genuine and attentive without being overtly intrusive. Pertfect! <br/><br/>Of course quality like this costs, but without any doubt I walked away with an absolute sense of contentment. <br/><br/>Well done to the team at Altair for a perfect night. <br/><br/>I will be coming back. <br/><br/>P.S. Take a special wine or experience the fantastic cellar on offer.
Julie Wilson
What a wonderful surprise to find such a fine dining experience, without the need to travel in to a inner Melbourne destination. Altair has certainly tempted with their menu.  The Wild Boar was not something i would have selected normally, but I was presently surprised. The meat was very tender, crusted with Quinoa, and served with crackling and chestnuts/prunes.  The steak was cooked as ordered, medium -rare. Served with heirloom carrots antique clay cooked vegetables. Yum....
CL
Very good food! Great service, too. Only thing is the steak I ordered was a little over cooked at the edge and it got very hard to chew 😢however overall experience was amazing 🌹

One of the most gastronomically creative and courageous menu's I have seen for a while - the choices all seemed inspiring and involked not only my curiousity but tastebuds, so I tried the degustation menu. Each dish brought it's own suprises and delights, and all were beautifully presented  and paired with a wonderful selection of wine. Ultimatly an expensive price for the dining experience, but worth it for the culinary novelty and support of local fine dining oppurtinities.

Thanks to Altair, Warrandyte’s dining scene has been taken to new and unexpected heights. The menu is designed to surprise and delight over perfectly executed dishes that retain your interest from start to finish. . There was an incredible precision to Head Chef Kelvin Shaw's cooking that spoke volumes about his calibre. It is absolutely no surprise that the restaurant is the highest ranked restaurant in the Eastern Suburbs by the 'Age Good Food Guide'.

Having eaten here before, we decided to go with the two course lunch special as we only wanted something small. There were several options to choose from and when they arrived, they were even better than they sounded on the menu. The food was delicious and they were a good serving size. In fact, the whole meal was a good example of their chef's skill in bringing life to the simplest dishes resulting in wonderful flavours and perfect presentation. Definitely recommended.

Good, friendly service. We had the degustation menu a few weeks ago. I had the vegetarian one and my partner had the regular one. The regular one was phenomenal but the vegetarian one was a let down. Boring and bland when there is so much creation to be made from vegetables and meat-free products. Dessert was lovely and the place was outstandingly clean and pleasant.

Altair Restaurant Warrandyte has received a lot of praise since opening in late 2013, yet has somehow remained under the radar of many a Melbourne diner. The most likely reason for this has to be its location which straddles the outer Eastern suburbs between Melbourne’s centre and the Yarra Valley.
John Nakulski
Fine dining and service in the mountains.<br/>Try the top-cap rump beef and the kingfish -- both delicious and prepared to perfection.<br/>The desserts were a work of art! Try the trio truffle and the dark chocolate orange dishes.<br/>We'll be back.

Once again, returned to this fabulous restaurant, and I honestly can't speak highly enough. If what you are looking for is fine dining with equisite fresh and unusual food combinations then this is a must. With an asian influence and modern approach to presentation and flavours, you will be transported to a place of gastronomical delight! My husband and I enjoyed the degustation menu so got to experience the wonderful array of what is currently on offer. Each meal kept improving which left us quite honestly overwhelmed with delight. Probably seems extreme but we travel and enjoy so many restaurants and their finest and to discover this fantastic restaurant so close to where we live is truly wonderful! But for anyone further away, make the journey. ..you won't be disappointed. (Unless you are looking for steak and chips with an all you can eat mind set) 😊

Having been now 5 times and each visit has never failed ti impress! Not only is the food original and unique but tastes amazing. The wine menu is clever and unusual which also adds another level of enjoyment. The staff are very professional but are wonderfully friendly and welcoming. Can't rate this place high enough and are thrilled we discovered it.

Words cannot describe the Quality and passion is seen on the plate and even 4 years on wow. They have even achieved even higher standards. Thank you for a wonderful evening 👌

Saturday night birthday celebration dinner was amazing. A group of us had chefs tasting menu of 6 courses. One of my friends is vegetarian so when I made the reservation and told Altair we would like to do the 6 course menu they designed a menu for her which she loved. The rest of us had the proper version and loved every dish. So much so when asked by our waiter what our favourite was we couldn't decide. A wonderful evening with good friends, great food and lovely staff. We will absolutely be back. Thanks again Altair.

I have to say I had one of the worst degustation experiences here last night. I was out with a whole table and we all had degustation which was either regular or vegetarian. From start to finish something was off about the food. Sure it looked good but it wasn't balanced and it was a meal of extremes. We started off Ok with the first dish which was the Blue swimmer crab. It was quite good but the raspberry was quite sweet which almost over powered the dish. <br/><br/>Second was the Wagyu Carpaccio. The bone marrow liquid was cold once poured it started turning to solidified fat chunks. It was well presented but quite hard to eat in a little drinking glass. Next was the cured hen egg which isn't so much an egg as it is one salted yolk. This dish was literally just salt after salt and more SALT !. The fried stinging nettle on top was just crispy salty flavors and i couldn't finish the dish. I swapped it on the table for a three cheese risotto and the person I swapped with had one bite and then understood why my face looked like I had just sucked 4 lemons. Further proof to the saltiness was the fact I've now woken up the following morning with cotton mouth. <br/><br/>I am a big fan of duck usually but then came the Duck Ham. It was just way to rich. the flavors were pungent and just had no balance whatsoever. The dish as a whole was way to over powering.<br/><br/>The main arrived which was the Corned lamb. The lamb was cooked very well and was juicy and succulent. The smoked tofu didn't even exist on my plate and toasted quinoa was almost chard which left a very odd after taste. <br/><br/>At this stage I wasn't really enjoying myself and It has been 3 hours to get out 5 very small and average courses out of the kitchen. <br/><br/>We did get to choose our desert so I opted for the Dark Chocolate Fondant. It came out and looked like a small chocolate sponge cake. It was cooked very well but lacked the sweetness I would expect with such a dish. It was quite bland and quince even though sweet was the wrong type of sweetness we needed for that dish. <br/><br/>All in all I hope it was a one off as I was looking forward to a very beautiful restaurant so near home. The wait staff are very attentive and very well trained. <br/><br/>I am so disappointed I spent $100 dollars after corkage on food i still felt hungry afterwards. It didn't give me the sense of wonder I was after.

Looking for fine dining in the NE suburbs, then look no further.  We have dined here several times and never been disappointed.  Recently we attended their 5 course "truffle" themed dinner.  Five course of pure delight.  Beautifully presented dishes prepared with inventive, and successful flair.  Nothing ordinary, but everything brilliant.  Service does tend to be a little slow, but that does not distract from the wonderful culinary delights.  Thanks team, we will be back.  D & D

Best Dining Experience Ever.<br/>Im not just saying that to give them a good wrap. They have truely earned it. My partner and myself rang up with half hours notice and they were able to fit us in. Upon arrival the staff greeted us with sincere smiles and showed us to our table. The waitress offered to take our jackets and cloaked them for us. Immediately we were offered drinks and got the wine list to look at. My partner ordered a half bottle of wine. Now talk about knowledge... the waitress showed us the wine then proceeded to educate us on the wine and background of the wine. Truely knowledgable!!. Without going into too much detail. we ordered the degustation menu and the food was to die for. Every mouthful was an experience in itself. We also ordered the matching wines to go with the dishes and again were amazed at the knowledge the staff had about their wines. This restuarant is not just somewhere to get something to eat... It is an experience. Allow a good 3 to 4 hours at this place to get the full experience. Well worth it! Great work to all the staff at Altairs.

Amazing dining experience.  Started with a great blue swimmer crab, followed by the sirloin and finished with the salted caramel doughnuts.  All sensational.  Superb wine and whisky list and the waiters were very impressive.  Amazing restaurant and look forward to coming back in the near future.

Delightful anniversary dinner. We enjoyed our first time at Altair last night for our wedding anniversary. Staff were very prompt, friendly while at the same time, inconspicuous throughout the evening. We opted for the a la carte menu over the degustation. All meals were stunningly presented, absolutely delicious and not too large. We were full but didn't feel like we went home busting at the seams, which was great. Great night and would happily return for a special occasion.

At last. I have been wanting to eat at this restaurant for some time, I was surprised when I was told that it has been here for 2 years, time just flys!!<br/>anyway better late than ...<br/>cannot speak highly enough of the food and service, will eat here again very soon and recommend to all I know.<br/>nothing in this area comes close to the standard of this restaurant.

Quality in Warrandyte. The ambience & the food at Altair was magnificent & would rival anything in the city. The menu is really interesting. Service was excellent, the little things make a difference. It is a must to visit.

An absolute delight!. I booked dinner for my friend and I to catch up and enjoy some great food. I booked this place specifically because I had a Best Restaurants of Melbourne gift card to use and this was on the list. With the fine dining tag and price I figured we could come away without paying too much extra. I order the poussin (baby chicken, spring chicken) which came with a lemon sauce and veggies. This was AMAZING. I could have licked the bowl clean. The chicken came with bones but they way it was cooked you could suck the meat off the bone. My friend ordered the lamb which I saw when it was first placed down and then the plate was clean! She thoroughly enjoyed it. We ordered dessert to share which was the chocolate dish and the plate was almost clean enough to re-use :) We also had a wine each and paid roughly $30 each to cover the entire bill. Excellent place for a romantic dinner and/or trying some amazing dishes with in-season produce. Highly recommend.

Friday lunch in lovely Warrandyte. My husband and I decided to dine at Altair for lunch today because we had heard good things about this restaurant. We both had the steak, chickpea chips and baby greens, Absolutely delicious!!! The waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. We will return!

Warrandyte is a small town 24km north-east of Melbourne CBD surrounded by alot of trees and bush. I came across Altair in the entertainment book and looked them up online. Their website is full of beautiful photos of their food and so I decided to give them a go. You wouldn’t really expect a fine dining restaurant in amidst the bars and pubs on Yarra Street, but you’d be pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is quite spacious and very nicely spaced.

Quoted on the webpage is George Bernard Shaw’s famous line:<br/><br/>‘There is no sincerer love than the love of food.’<br/><br/>It is clear that these guys get it.

DESERT WITH A POP. This restaurant is a delight! I have now been there three times and the staff are a treat.<br/>The part I always look forward to is the desert. From fairy floss to popping candy, it is always a pleasure to dine.<br/>Would recommend this restaurant to both locals and those who are will to venture out of Melbourne

Delicious.. Tucked away in a quiet green Melbourne suburb, Altairs understated presence makes it a real find. Step inside and the warm atmosphere is equalled only by the warm and knowledgeable staff. The wine selection is immense and the food outstanding. An amazing experience we will be sure to return again shortly!

Been here 3 times in 3 months and it's been consistently great. Amazing beer list (nice to see beer being taken so seriously). Very knowledgable about their wine. Great food. Seemingly ever-changing menu. Love it.

Great breakfast. Breakfast with a family group of ten. Lovely restaurant for a special breakfast. (not like a noisy café)very friendly and attentive service. Good coffee. breakfast offerings enjoyed by whole group. Will go again for breakfast and keen to try evening meal .

Splendid food and excellent service.. Tonight my partner and I tried the 6 course degustation at Altair. Top notch in every regard. Each course stood up independently as a statement in quality, flavour, and craftsmanship. The wine selection was also excellent, including two good semillons (my favourite varietal, so often absent from good restaurants' wine lists). An excellent experience; we will certainly be back soon.

Super find!. We enjoyed a wonderful evening at Altair last night. <br/><br/>The waitress and all that looked after us were exceptional, knowledgeable about their product and had a level of service rarely seen these days! The food was sophisticated and exceptionally prepared. We could not find a fault in anything that reached our table. So much so that the 4 of us had to share a portion of our meals, lest we suffer serious food envy. It was great to meet the owners at the end of the night and get further insights into their business.<br/><br/>We eat out regularly in the inner city and Altair is an extreme rare find out of the CBD.

Great find!. A wonderful dining experience! Food was to die for and staff were all very friendly and attentive. Restaurant was busy but we did not have to wait long for our meals. Highly recommend the nose to tail lamb and the chickpea chips are amazing. Will be going back to try the tasting menu next time.

Not a good night. We waited a long time for everything including even getting menus! It was a very disappointing evening service wise and the food was not as wow as I had anticipated. Dessert was quite disappointing with overcooked fondants and rock solid icy parfait. I won't be dignifying them with a return visit. Staff all seemed young and inexperienced which did not help.

My husband and I had a beautiful lunch here on Sunday. Food was outstanding and service was friendly and efficient. City dining close to home. What more could you want!

2 hour wait for main. We went for dinner with a table of 11. Two hour wait for main. When we enquired after 1.5 hours where our food was we were told that now that all the smaller tables had been served ours shouldn't be long! Apparently if your a biggish group your left till last, regardless of when you walk in the door... The mains were really nice however the chocolate fondant for desert had no soft centre at all and was really a cake. Waitresses were lovely and attentive however sen management should have the decency to come and face the music themselves to explain a 2 hour wait and show some form of regret! No apology, discount or remorse for it all which demonstrates a lack of care from sen management/chef for their customers! We won't be returning or recommending!

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the great attention to detail, incredible flavours and friendliness of staff - all these in the beautiful and tranquil surroundings of Warrandyte. Totally recommend.

The Food of Master Chef. I have been here twice now to experience the Degustation Menu. Wikipedia defines this as "a careful, appreciative tasting of various foods and focusing on the gustatory system, the senses, high culinary art and good company" - this is absolutely true at Altair! We loved the Tempura Tofu with the various textures of puree pumpkin, shitaki mushroom and toasted grains. The Celeriac Tortellini was beautiful and creamy. Venison Carpaccio with Licorice and Raspberry puree was a surprising combination and delicious! The Pork Cheek with Asian Apple - stunning (pictured)! And over the two different visits, I've tasted the Chocolate Ganache with Candied Orange, Sticky Date Pudding, Saffron Dumplings with Quince Puree - that's what I can remember! Our table had nearly all the desserts on offer the second visit! All of them were exceptional and I was sure I could picture some exotic Mediterranean scene when I tasted the combination of spices, fruit and saffron of that Saffron Dumpling! The "Ooohhh! and Aaahhh!" at the table followed every bite of the new course. This is NOT a series of a Tablespoon of each tasting, but a nice size portion of each course. When we left, everyone felt not just well fed, but that this was definitely a great foodie's experience. I am SO glad I don't need to venture into the city for such an experience!

Fantastic Dinner. My husband and I had the tasting menu with matching wines and LOVED it!!<br/>Food was beautiful, service was efficient and friendly and the restaurant has a great feel.<br/>We will be back again and again and again.

Not returning.. Perhaps I had a bad menu night as my husband enjoyed his rabbit entree and fish main. I went the baked Saint Marcellin entree and found it all too strong and hard to eat the liquid cheese. Then I tried the Tempura Tofu and could not get through the 1/2 cup of chicken seed mix and rich creamy purée pumpkin ..... a dish all too hard to eat so I left 1/2 of it. Lovely decor, service etc. but need more menu choice.

Dessert to die for. It was a good experience, the steak was great, table service was exceptional. The dessert was to die for. Would go back just for that.

Very enjoyable. Very pleasant place to eat. Quality meal, beautifully cooked, not pretentious, just nice food, service attentive but not overly. Really liked it and will be back. Excellent rib eye!

We went to Altair last Saturday night for our wedding anniversary and were very impressed. The degu is great and each dish was well matched with the recommended wines. Lovely device and decor. Finally we have something in warrandyte that goes beyond focaccia and soup of the day. We will definitely be back

Stuart ward. Very good experience , the food was fantastic with great service, after talking to the chef (owner) it Sounds like the menu will get ever better and better over time . The area (warrandyte) has been screaming out for restaurant of this quality . Can't wit for our next meal

Good taste let down. Sure, a large group but with a limited menu wouldn't you think that mains could have come out sooner than two hours after our arrival? One friendly waiter and one you wouldn't care to have again. Lovely dishes but portions too small. Verdict? Great tastes but service and price mean we won't be there again unless things change...

The bar has been raised in Warrandyte.. We went to Altair with high expectations.<br/>We had read good reviews on Urbanspoon, the menu was priced on the higher end, and...it was our 10th wedding anniversary.<br/>So anything less than impressive was going to be a disappointment.<br/><br/>The location was an easy 10 points; dead centre of beautiful Warrandyte, on the river in an elevated position looking into the gorge.<br/><br/>The decor was stunning for our tastes. Modern yet rustic yet expensive yet relaxed....hard to describe, but reminiscent of inner city wine bar --- (and we would happily let them decorate our house).<br/><br/>The menu was well put together. The wine list was exemplary for the size of the venue, and it made me wonder if this was possibly actually a wine bar that just had a really nice food menu. They even had a degustation menu (which I think they called a 'Tasting Menu') with matching wines with each course as an option.<br/><br/>We were served by co-owner Michelle, who was delightful to talk to. She knew the wine list like it was her home address, and her whole face literally lit up when we asked for a recommendation to suit our choice of meal. Better yet, she was spot-on with her suggestion. <br/><br/>Our meals were excellent. Top quality, cooked perfectly, and portioned to fill. But in retrospect I think our mains may have been paled by the beautiful little complimentary treats that Michelle kept dropping on our table. Amuse-bouche of jellied green tea, samples of exotic olive oils with fresh yeasty bread, and impossibly delicate cauliflower cream filled zucchini blossoms.<br/><br/>Desert was from the specials board, and we were both glad to have not offered to share one, because it was to die for.<br/><br/>Full stomachs and wine enhanced outlooks aside, what really struck me as uniquely impressive to Altair was the sense that there was pride taken and considered detail in every aspect of the evening. Well done.<br/><br/>Can't wait to return for that degustation menu next time!

Had the most wonderful dining experience at Altair on the weekend. Food was absolutely amazing, exciting variety, incredible attention to detail and tasted fantastic. <br/>What we liked also was the service we received matched the quality of the food. The waiters were all very friendly and knowledgeable.<br/>The decor is fantastic too, feels very rustic and warm. Love it. Obviously a lot of effort and pride has been put into establishing this fantastic new restaurant. <br/>A gem of Warrandyte!<br/>Highly recommend and will be back for sure.

New favourite. The reviews on Urban Spoon took me to this restaurant, and hopefully this review will encourage more patrons. <br/>We had dinner there last night, the service is faultless it cost nothing to be friendly and attentive. The food wow we were offered a complementary marshmallow Beetroot, it was melt in your mouth. Our entrees were delicious and our main porterhouse excellent quality and cooked perfectly. You will not leave hungry from this place. The wine list is varied and includes some Yarra Valley favourites for the locals. We also had a cocktail that was great and well priced. Beautiful, romantic and comfortable is how I would describe our experience. <br/>If you are local or in the area check them out. Great place for special occasions, business dinners, or entertaining that special overseas guest.

Fantastic new restaurant in warrandyte. What a delightful new restaurant we can now enjoy right in the middle of warrandyte<br/>The elegant dining room is sophisticated yet rustic and relaxed and the meals are in a class I have never experienced before in warrandyte<br/>Service could not be faulted, and I hope the chef never ever leaves our community.<br/>We intend to visit frequently, and try all of the taste sensations<br/>Good luck to the team
Georgina
Hmmmm. I want to like it but the portions a small and very thought out I must say the chef is talented but instead of concentrating on presentation how about worry about weather or not the food is hot, the service is slow and there were only 2 of us for lunch we still spent about 2hrs in there, maybe a little expensive but its quality produce you pay for.
