Review India Gate Restaurant - Warrnambool

Neil Hunter
We.are in Warrnambool for the Carnival. We wanted a good Indian meal and we’re all surprised by the quality of India Gate. The sample plate entree was an instant winner. The food was not too spicy and we all had an enjoyable time. We will be back.

Our dine in experience was not very good. Poor managed restaurant, staff focused more on the take away customers then on seated staff. Mains took about 2 hours to come out. Food was delicious so we would advise people to do a take away order. I think next time we would try the other indian restaurants in town. I would advise management to have someone focus on seated staff, someone else focus on calls and takeaway customers, be more prepared with food, possibly give something on the table at the start so people aren’t starving. The whole process needs to be way more efficient.

Very nice staff, excellent service and truly delicious authentic food. Will be a repeat customer 😊

One of the worst restaurant in town....nothing is fresh.... butter chicken is very sweet like sugar and other curry did not have any taste at all. they should learn the authenticity of Indian food. No taste or flavour of gravy at all, seems like they use fried onions for gravy. Highly not recommended.

Great food but the service is truly terrible. They never pick up their phone. Wait times are well over what they advertise. Take away orders are placed behind ‘eat in’ customers who show up after you order.

Food was tasty however the venue is terribly managed. Had our booking times changed on numerous occasions. Waited over 2 hours for our mains to arrive. Waiting staff were too busy taking on more phone orders and takeaway customers to pay attention to seated customers. Had to ask for drinks to be brought to table after being seated for 40 minutes. I would only recommend this place if you order over the phone in advance and allow plenty of time for preparation. Perhaps call to ensure its actually ready before making the trip out.

My husband and I enjoyed a lovely dinner last night celebrating my birthday , the service was excellent & our girl Jess looked after us . Would highly recommend to all that enjoy a great Indian .

Worst and very rude manager , pathetic tasteless food, we ordered spicy food- chicken biryani and chicken kharai, in the name of spicy biryani they added chilli powder in some chicken curry and stir with plane rice, that was tasteless extremly spicy rice, and the chicken kharai was same tasteless watery chicken gravy which is total waste of money , this restaurant has no idea how to make proper recipes, they are just cooking and giving names to dishes very bad and unprofessional chef. I strongly not recommend this place.

My score 4 stars. Great lunchtime deal that more locals & tourists should partake in - being at other end of Leibig St away from restaurant precinct probably doesn't help walk-in trade. We lived near Warrnambool for 9 months over last spring/summer/autumn & ate here at least once a fortnight. Service level ok to good depending on who serves you; mainly we got the chef/owner who was a nice guy (he chose all the Bollywood background music which was great). There was a woman who was also pleasant & another woman who was ok. Food > For $12.50 you get a thali (platter) which consists of 2 mains/nice long grain rice/really generous sized naan/yoghurt/pappadum & a drink - we would leave feeling very full & take some naan with us for ron. Butter chicken/Lamb rogan josh for the carnivores, but we chose a vego version of Dal & Shahi Paneer. The Dal was smoky & rich - we really enjoyed the texture of the larger pulses amongst the smaller lentils. The paneer was good - sauce was creamy & flavoursome with a nice chilli level. We settled on medium-plus heat after trying a few different levels early on. Each visit we would see regulars "in the know" either dining in or getting the lunch deal as take away... One of the better lunch venues in this part of the world - definitely under-rated!

Food is absolutely amazing! We did the lunch special for $12.50. We also ordered a cheese naan and WOW it is the best i have ever had. However, the service was poor and the restaurant was empty which is sometimes awkward. Very blunt and quiet waitress who didn't really explain the lunch special, just sat the info on the table without giving the actual menu or a proper welcome. When we went to pay (we were still the only ones in there) my Mum had to go down to the kitchen to ask for someone so we could pay. I think this restaurant would go better down the other end of town with the rest of the restaurants.

The interior of the restaurant wasn't overly fancy, however suited the casual Indian dining experience.
Ordered three mains, plus some very coconuty rice, and some garlic naan with not a lot of garlic on it. All up took 20 minutes on a Wednesday evening to come to our table.
The waitressing staff could have been more happy. However, the food for its price point was delightful. Would come again, or get takeaway.

Food good, service good , did not have to wait long. Food was not what we normally eat, 👔 Enjoyed the change But I don't think it would be a regular on our menu list.😆

Worst service ever waited 2 hours for food to be delivered and no reasonable explanation never going here again not to mention the food was pretty Bland

Absolute Crap! Avoid.. Went in to our booked table of six, sat down, then a table of twelve came in, followed by a table of four. Sitting there waiting for our entrées, the table that came in a half hour after us got theirs, and then their mains- before us or the table of twelve. Got up and left after waiting an hour for entrées. The kicker? The table of four were all Indian and got favouritism. Crap restaraunt.

Very Disapointed not what it used to be. I was traveling this week on Business with a colleague, I suggested we eat at the India Gate which used to be a very good restaurant.
The service we received was terrible we waited an 11/2 to get our main meals (only 4 people in the restaurant) one of the dishes was that salty and was not fit for Human consumption, we ordered a Dahl dish and got a mixed been dish when we both complained.
they couldn't have cared less, When we complained to the waitress we got: I just work hear.
so to any one thinking of having meal their don't.
This used to be a very good restaurant sad to see it go down hill i hope the owners read this as the food is one of the worst i have ever had and I frequent a lot of restaurants all over Australia with work .

Dreadful food very dissapointed. Dreadful food. We waited nearly an hour after ordering to recieve this awful meal. Nan bread was burnt pitta bread from a supermarket. We asked for it to be replaced and they begrudgingly did but it was still dreadful oily and again burnt. My husbands korma has a total of 3 cubes of mystery meat. The curries were watery tasteless and just yuck. My chicken was stringy over cooked and unpleasant. We have had many Indian meals over the years and this one was outright awful. The staff were only interested in the take aways that take president over in house customers. At one stage we were ignored with 20 other customers. We will never go again. Save your money or go across the road and get a happy meal. The reviews saying it is good are surely a joke.

One of the worst food ever... No taste so ever... Paid $86 for crap food... Staff is not helpful as well... No apology... Don't bother to try this restaurant...

Not as good as rating suggests. I've been to many Indian restaurants, heck I even worked in one. The korma curry was watery and bland. Onion Bhaji was so bad I didn't eat it, and this is my favourite thing to get at an Indian restaurant. I've tried Onion Bhaji at over 15 restaurants and these definitely didn't measure up... too much flour hardly any onion.

The good: mango lassi (FYI it
isn't too sweet), tandoori chicken entree and chocolate naan.

Very very good Indain food. Visiting Warrnambool we were struggling to find a preferred restaurant open on a Monday night. We chose India Gate as it had great reviews on Urban Spoon. We were definitely not disappointed, nice décor, good service and very very good food. BYO which is always a bonus and prices very fair. If this restaurant was in Melbourne it would be busy all the time. Highly recommend this really great find.

London Standard. I am a local and took two of my relatives from London to this eatery, they loved it, and they wine and dine at Michelin star restaurants in London as one of them works as a PA for a top London restaurateur. Their comment to the waiting staff was that they could make a lot of money if they moved their establishment to London.

I agree it is often less than full in the restaurant, It is because they have not adapted their food style to fit in with the local taste for frankly somewhat 'blander tastes"- a large proportion of the locals have no real desire to have an authentic experience if it does not fit in with their demand to have less spice, then it is not going to be frequented. It is my experience that other local establishments have been fast in adopting a more "Aussiefied/Warrnamboolified" experience with their Asian cuisine. For example I experienced a wonderful Thai in a new establishment who grew their own produce such as lemon grass etc. in the restaurant. Their food had all the lovely aromatic taste of Thai I had experienced at top eateries in Melbourne. Imagine my huge disappointment on my next visit, we fount that they had been "Warrnamboolfied" , this meant stripping their dishes back to an aussie version of chow- mien. I am extremely grateful that India Gate stays in the authentic cultural dining experience.

Well-kept secret. I am continually disappointed with the quality of dining in the south west after moving to the area two years ago, but India Gate is an exception. It's worked its way into my routine, heading down there about every three weeks to get a chicken sagwala with na'an and steamed rice for about $25. A fairly standard price for what is, consistently, a rich, tasty, fulfilling meal.

I have also tried the butter chicken, which is a little sweeter than I am used to, but is still of top quality. The only disappointing experience I have had was when the lamb was severely overcooked, leading to hard lumps floating in the curry sauce. But one bad experience out of about 20 is a pretty good return, especially for a Warrnambool restaurant.

The one thing I cannot understand is how it is usually fairly empty on most nights. I feel the people of Warrnambool are missing out on high-quality food, with pleasant service in a warm setting. Perhaps it is hard to spot as people race around the Liebig Street corner. Perhaps it is because Indian cuisine has yet to establish itself in this part of regional Victoria.

Highly recommended.

Amazing food. Expensive takeaway menu, but very yummy. We paid $40 for two butter chickens and a serve of rice to go.

Great Indian! Great service even though we were the only one's in the restaurant. Keep an eye out for the specials board, had a coconut naan with our curries which weren't on the menu and they were amazing. If you like Indian you'll love Indian Gate. Highly recommend.

I love India gate. Always great food & lovely service!

Polite service and good food. Particularly tasty and interesting vegetarian dishes. The only downside was the wait - well over 30 mins after ordering and we were only the second table occupied. The waitress seemed to be juggling takeaway orders as well as managing the tables and even when our first dishes arrived we waited several minutes for our rice, bread and other items, whilst she took another order at the counter.

I ordered the family pack (takeaway) with 2 x buttered chicken and lamb rogan josh, with naan bread 2 x rice, 4 x spinach things, 4 x kebab meat & sauces, great value ($62) and taste !

Great atmosphere, the aroma and the staff are fantastic! With a choice of 'hotness' the food is perfect, excellent value and as fresh as you could imagine. Warrnambool is lucky to have an Indian restaurant of this quality. It's one of my favourites and I find it hard to go elsewhere! Try it, you won't be disappointed!

Excellent take Away. Not sure why the above reviewer took things so seriously, but we thought you'd like to know our experience with India Gate. We now call it India Great after ordering take away, but it was hot and delicious, and delivered to our apartment within 25 minutes of ordering.

It was actually delivered to our room on the 2nd floor (we didin't expect door to door) by a friendly staff member who even brought a wireless Eftpos machine so we could pay by card. we were expecting to meet him outside in the rain with the usual messing around with change etc.

It made that cold rainy night perfect and a great memory of or trip along the great ocean road. we'll be orcdering more next visit.

Worst ever, liars, disgusting. Yesterday afternoon i went there with my family and my guests (12 people). In lunch menu there is only one item i.e. Lunch platter, which has 2 curries and 1 nan bread and few spoons of rice. The waitress told us that we will get Dal makhni and Palak paneer in those 2 curries in the platter. having no other option we ordered 12 of them. After waiting for 30 minutes waitress came back and said we dont have those 2 curries instead they were offering matar paneer and mix veg which no one wants to eat. we argued that how come suddenly original curries disappeared after 30min of waiting??? After an argument the chef/owner came out of the kitchen and told us that we can have any 2 curries from the main menu and also he will give complementary gulab jamun to everyone. having said that, we told him to bring matar paneer and malai kofta. After 1.5 hours of wait the platter finally came out. and guess what magic, we had dal makhni and matar paneer. from where the hell dal came from??? where was the malai kofta? the quantities of these two curries was just about few tablespoons. half cooked nan bread was even worse. at last gulab jamun were also disappeared.
what the hell???? ridiculous, non sense, worst ever indian restaurant i have seen in australia. will never go back to those liars.
