Review Tasty Gate - Werribee

Angelina Medved
Amazing! Will be our regular Malaysian restaurant from now. Very humble decor, however food and service was great. Felt very welcomed and valued as customers although we had never been before. Lots of food choices and serving sizes were generous (so come with an empty stomach), and food was full of great flavour, cooked perfectly. Only downside is that we didn't try this place sooner.

Delicious food, reasonably priced and very friendly staff. Such a great place. The flavour of the Chicken Curry is perfect.

We eat here frequently. Every dish is a masterpiece prepared and cooked lovingly by a husband and wife team who enjoys making their customers happy 🙌

It's a sad day. The end of an era. Tasty Gate has finally closed it's doors yesterday due to a failed re-negotiation of the lease agreement. I have been a regular customer here since they opened up in 2013. Their food is awesome. Nasi Goring, Beef Rending, Satay Chicken are all good, however their Char Kway Teow is the best I've had outside of Malaysia. Some other reviewers mentioned the store needs an update, but I say who cares when you're busy with your face in that plate of spicy Char Kway Teow. I had my last plate of Char Kway Teow there just before they closed the doors one last time and already thinking about where I'm going to get the next fix from. My son wanted to be an intern here and learn how to cook these amazing dishes directly from the chef. He is heartbroken. Well done guys for giving Wyndham a real Malay food option. You guys will be missed.

Best malaysian food of West Melbourne. Historic place to go, it was my first time and it trully was a blast. The place is huge and spacious. Staff is awesome and prices very correct. The quality of the food is great and very tasteful, their butter chicken is a must have if you go there, tenderness of their meats are to die for. Definitly would go back anytime !

I am delighted by the quality of food they offer. It's not the best Malaysian food overall. But the beef rendang is one of the best I have tasted in Melbourne. The owner and staff are amiable. However, the furniture arrangement in the store gives a clunky feeling. Aside from that, I always have a pleasant experience dining here.

Average restaurant. Not expensive. Ordered nasi goreng and seafood tom yum soup. Bit disappointed with the soup, only one prawn and lots of veg... There was no mushroom in it. Taste was okay. Good for casual eating.

I have a wonderful visit here, purchased some Satay Skewers and utilised the park bench out the front and started enjoying them, these are some of the best skewers I’ve had in Hoppers Werribee area and I well recommend them.

Beautiful food at an extremely reasonable price with excellent service from a lovely family business. I would strongly recommend this restaurant to anybody.

Most consistent with their flavours! Most satisfying Malaysian eatery amongst the Werribee Area!

Best service ever! So friendly and the food was amazing. Great value for money too. Homemade roti was excellent and went so well with the curry laksa. I can’t believe I never tried it sooner! Everyone should eat here! Will be back and will bring my family :) Thanks Tasty Gate!

Tastygate is a hidden gem. They are very professional and provide authentic Malaysian cuisines. Staff are extremely welcoming and recommend fantastic dishes to try. If you are looking for a great Malaysian food with reasonable prices this place is for you. Large portions with great deals' perfect for filling up a large belly or feeding the entire family. 10/10 recommend. Keep up the good work TastyGate.

If you wish to eat malaysin home cooked food in werribee, this is the place for you. I read other reviews and wanted to try this place. I ordered roti canai with chicken and goat curry. Curries were delicious. More south indian taste rather than malaysian. Roti was authentic, deep fried and tasty.
I think I will visit the place again for roti canai. Though the taste is good, but the ambience was lacking the warmth and feel of dining out.
I truely feel this place can do well if the ambience provides more warmth as it adds more taste to the food. Just my thot.

Stumbled upon Tasty Gate on Google and was excited to try some authentic Malaysian cuisine for lunch. It's located in a quiet area but plenty of parking available. The owners were incredibly lovely and friendly. We ordered hot teh tarik which tasted just as good as the one you get at a hawker stall in KL. The char kway teow was charred and had the perfect amount of spice! We also shared a chicken roti canai which is delicious. Will head back to Tasty Gate again soon!

With not exactly the most appealing exterior, and perhaps even less so inside, it would be fair to say the food here is surprising to say the least.

The saying 'just like home' is enough to describe the experience here.

While not spectacular, the Tom yum noodle soup and Cantonese fried noodles were solid dishes - not overstepping any elements but not encouraging any 'wow!'.

I don't see any strengths here, but at the same time no weaknesses. Quite solid all-around.
A&S Eat Everything
Tried Tasty Gate on a quiet week night. Always drove past but this time decided to give it a go.

Set out is ok and place is alright too. I wouldn’t say it’s bad but it’s definitely not fine dining. Staff were very friendly and welcoming though.

We order a couple of Rotis, Satay Chicken Skewers, Curry Laksa and Butter Chicken with coconut rice.

The rotis were authentic, fresh, crispy and delicious. The chicken skewers well cooked and seasoned accompanied by an excellent Satay Sauce.

The Curry Laksa was nice and fragrant and very rich and creamy. Different to the slightly more water based Laksa broth which is more predominant in other restaurants. There’s chicken breast, fish cake, fish ball and prawn a top of what appeared to be egg noodles. Overall the dish was very nice and flavoursome. If I had to fault one thing, it would be that the noodles were a bit soggy.

The Butter Chicken was pleasantly surprising. Going by the description, you don’t know what to expect in terms of flavours as the sauce is described as a “butter sauce”. The dish is again very flavoursome with fried chicken and vegetables covered in the butter sauce. The sauce was rich and flavoursome with a nice balance between sweet and savoury. The coconut rice was also very nice and of a generous portion.

Overall, this place was great. Authentic and delicious Malaysian food. Definitely recommended, will be back!

Spacious place and friendly service.
They didn't provide special lunch menu so I ordered tom yum noodle soup from the main menu.
It came in generous portion. The soup had a good balance of sweet n sour, plenty of meat and various veggies.
Teh tarik was a bit sweet and I would love it to be more foamy.
But I'll return to try something else.

Very friendly and homely restaurant. All the dishes that we ordered today was just the taste that we were looking for. Big serving. Love the teh Tarik. Best we have tasted in Melbourne

Don’t be put off by the appearance. It looks like a little takeaway shop but their food has some awesome flavours and the owners are terrific people!

We went there when the place first opened. The older lady is super friendly. The food is okay. My partner had the beef ran dang and i had the laksa. It was bellow average. Would go back again to see if anything have changed.

Great Malay Malaysian restaurant run by a beautiful family. Lovely service and great authentic food. The Teh Tarik is the best I've had in Melbourne. Not too sweet and so full of depth !

It's a halal restaurant, so no pork related food items. But flavor is not an issue still. CKT, ayam berlada and the nasi lemak was great! Beef rendang was melt in your mouth. Brilliant :)

Came here with hubby for the first time today. He loved his Nasi Lemak and curry puffs. I ordered spring rolls, dumpling soup and mee goreng. All was beautiful. Staff were wonderfully friendly. If it was closer to home I would be a regular.
Aysha Fealy
Disappointed with the food. Ordered chicken curry and chicken rendang. Chicken is a whole chicken that has been chopped up with all bones and crap still inside include ribcage and gritty bits. Ordered mild but still very spicy. Roti bread was good.

The decor is a bit basic but the food, while not perfectly authentic was pretty decent. One visit thus far but the 4 dishes we tried were all excellent as was the service, it's a bit far from the main restaurant strip but worth seeking out.

good food, big portions, and very friendly service! Would totally come back for my Malaysian food fix. Butter chicken and teh tarik are really good 👍🏻

Have been to Tastygate since it just opened though I'm not a regular. When I talked to Sofia during a meal, she ever mentioned that their price is high because their portion is big. Recently, I went back and ordered my usual mutton soup and San hor fan. Sorry to say that portion is small as per what Sofia has promised. There is no more sambal belancan and bread for the mutton soup and the taste is inconsistent. Portion for San hor fan is pathetic with the kind of price. :(

We eat here often and find the service very inviting.. I am also a celiac and the staff go out of their way to accommodate me.. they go to a lot of trouble to ensure I can eat safely and often ask if they are not sure.. sweet and sour fish with a very tasty egg covering is one of our favorites...

I do not write reviews however I will make an exception for this restaurant as this was the first time I have ever been served a frozen, raw piece of meat in my time of eating out. If you are in the hospitality industry, there should be NO reason why a frozen, raw piece of meat should be served. When I informed the waitress, she took back the meal without an apology.

I was not impressed at the lack of customer service shown.

Bioslaya
Warm service and good portion, but the nasi lemak I had was quite plain (sadly, I can make better at home). One of the few things that can be improved is the dish plating. For example, chopped fried chicken would look like there's more on the plate than a single fried chicken. Anchor the boiled egg to the sambal and the anchovies so the plate don't look too starkly white and empty.

Great teh tarik despite being made using non-traditional method :)

Made a second visit and I can recommend the curry with roti paratha, they're good. So is the stir fried spinach.

Beef rendang is... not my usual beef rendang, but the meat is quite tender.
Hungry Ronin
Upon walking in you feel like you've entered a franchise fast food restaurant rather than a Malaysian restaurant. But the warm greeting and service quickly changes that. We didn't exactly get out dishes in order (mains with entrees) but that doesn't matter much. The food was good, generous (large portions, yum) and authentic enough for what it is. We had myriad of things - mee goreng, satay, perkedel, which were decent, but I thought the stand out was the hainan chicken aka nasi ayam. The kitchen knows its cuisine. My friends wanted real sambal (chilli) and was catered for easily. Like it, shall be back laah.

The staff was very eager for feedback from customers and I gave them my humble opinions but they seem to be quite defensive about what was being offered instead of taking them onboard for improvements. Have I been harsh with my review? I beg to differ since there are a lot of better malaysian cafes and restaurants out there which I have tried, it's a competitive industry if you cannot stay authentic and true to the origins of the dishes then you'll lose customers like me.

Hainan Fried Noodle & Watan Hor. Big portion and taste

-----14 Jan, 2015-----

Hainan Fried Noodle & Watan Hor. Big portion and taste

Great taste, good portion & very friendly service. We happened to chance upon this restaurant after visiting the Werribee Open Range Zoo. We ordered Ipoh Hor Fun, Nasi Ayam, Curry Laksa & Char Kuey Teow to be shared with the entire family. All the portions were fairly sizeable. The different types of chillies (sambal belacan, chicken rice chillies) which accompanied were also of ample proportion. The combination of crispy noodles and hor fun in the Ipoh Hor Fun was an instant hit with the family. The waiter and waitress were very friendly, and the service was excellent. We left with fond memories, both gastronomically & service wise. It's great value for money indeed.

Loved it! Fresh and yummy.. Had dinner there today and loved the food. Nice to have food which is not pasty and dishes that tastes the same. Will definitely go again.

Family friendly. I have came to tasty gate many times and had the opportunity to get to know the owners and rest of family who run this place. Most times i get the chicken rice but will try satay sticks and many other dishes. We are happy with the place and will keep coming back also they are open to feedback which is important in any business as its education for all. They have halal options and caters for all religions which is important as well.

Below average. Came here for lunch the other day and unfortunately was very disappointed. I ordered something from the menu because the beautiful photo took me back to the food courts in Malaysia. When it came out it was nothing like the photo and tasted even worse. The owners seemed nice but it doesn't make up for what was on my plate. Coffee was no good too. Very disappointed and won't be back

Too MUCH MSG is not good nothing special. -The service was slow
-too much usage of MSG in the foods
-taste nothing special compared to any other Malaysian restaurant
-the price was quite expensive
-pictures shown here was strictly for visual illustrations only. Foods they served look nothing more than hawkers food.

Swell. Food is authentic and taste perfect.. Will definitely come back again!

What a shame!. Thought to check this out given the positive reviews...Unfortunately a dissatisfied experience.

Spring rolls - burnt and only contained purple cabbage and carrots.

Curry Puffs - Undercooked and extremely oily, but filling was good.

Satay sticks - portions were undersized (size of my thumb)

Char Kway Tao - noodles were over cooked and soggy, no flavor with the remaiming ingredients.

Sweet & Sour Chicken - seemed to be pre cooked and reheated, dry and no crisp.

Green Tea - basically a tea bag in a mug $3.80 crazy!!

However there are positives, customer service was really inviting and friendly,

Atmosphere:
Was extremely sterile. ..they need music at the very least to cheer the place up.

Note: Photos uploaded here are nothing replicated to what is served in restaurant or images displayed in restaurant menu.

I was really excited about having a lical Mslaysian but I have to admit I will not return.

Great experience. Had our first dinner in melbourne in this simple restaurant which serve great food in reasonable price. teh tarik is a must try drink here. 5 of us had tried tomyan~curry laksa~mee hailam with great satisfaction. all food served in large proportion(all of us cannot finish our own meal as we are too full with all the nice food). owner is nice and helpful in giving suggestion to us for our trip. will definitely pay our second visit and recommend it to my friends.reasonable waiting time

Good food served by good people

Badly understaffed. Went there on a Friday evening, there was one waiter who also makes the drinks AND is the cashier, serving every single table including a big table celebrating a birthday. Left after 20 minutes because the tables that arrived before us just received their drinks and were sitting around looking bored.

Not sure about the food there but won't go there again, waiting time is just atrocious.

Excellent Malaysian place! Went there for a family dinner last night, our order was quite big: curry laksa, Bihun goreng, nasi goreng, mee hailam, tom yum noodles, roti jala, and ais kacang. Each meal was very generously portioned, and tasted authentic Malaysian. The tom yum is the best I've tasted in Melbourne, and the roti jala curry had a very unique and tasty flavour.

The ais kacang was also excellent, with all expected ingredients straight from Malaysian hawkers.

Service was great; the guys go out of their way to chat with you as if you are guests to their house and not just customers.

Suggestions: all the items above were great, the tom yum was authentically spicy so those who cannot take heat may want to stay away.

The Gate to Great Tastes. Excellent teh tarik, the Cantonese style fried noodle is the best in Melbourne. Great sweet and sour chicken, different from any other restaurant. Love it!

The portions were huge, we couldnt finish any of it so i will be having the left overs for dinner!! The staff were so nice and friendly! Definitely recommend it to everyone and will be back soon!

Best AUTHENTIC malaysian Food. Ate there on Mon night. Ordered Assam Fish, Prawns with Sambal and Vegetable (Eggplant & Okra with shrimp paste). The food was really good and the serving was quite large. It was the best Malaysian authentic food I had in Australia. This place is not flashy or upclass, rather it is really good if you are looking for the real Malaysian taste.

Delicious new tastes served in a warm & friendly environment. We have been twice now and love the food at TastyGate :) The menus are beautiful and allow us to get a peek at what we will receive to eat! I am torn between ordering the meals I have tried before and love, and experiencing a new taste sensation by ordering something unusual. All the staff there are so friendly, welcoming and caring of our enjoyment of the meal, its like being served at my mum's house!!!

Love this place!! My husb.... Love this place!!

My husband and I decided to try this place after hearing good things from our friends. The nasi lemak was delicious the sambal was beautifully authentic and the chicken was crisped to perfection! My husband had the roti and goat curry, also delicious... We will definitely be back
Lynn
Unbelievable small portion of takeaway. No way I go back again for their tiny takeaway at that price . In shock!!
Didi
Never set foot into this place. Restaurant is more than half empty but I have to wait for 59mins for my main course to arrive and follow by the soup! All my friends have their food served before me. Shallots was added when we constantly remind the staff not to put that in. The waiter has no clue what is a shallot! VERY DISSAPOINTED! If one is hungry please go somewhere, else be prepared to sit there and wait...

Lovely and authentic food, friendly service. Excellent roti, great sambal. Worth the trip for non-locals.

Hugely Disappointing. I placed a phone order, and was told they had run out of spring rolls. These were for my daughter, so instead I ordered her satay skewers. My friend ordered Nasi Ayam, I ordered Roti Canai with Chicken Curry. When I arrived to collect, I was told they were very sorry but they had also run out of satay chicken skewers. A Malaysian restaurant runs out of satay chicken. What? So I had no food for my daughter, I had to drive to McDonalds on the way home to buy another meal. We get home and the Nasi Ayam looked suspiciously like a few pieces of day old coles roasted chicken with boiled rice (which looked NOTHING like the picture on their menu). My chicken curry was one small piece of chicken on the bone in a curry sauce with a heat that cancelled out most of the flavour. The roti was burnt, dry, not at all flaky, and quite thick for roti. More like Naan, without the yum factor. I wish I'd had baked beans on toast and saved my money. I'll never go back.

Authentic Malaysian food. TastyGate serves authentic malaysian cuisine. Best of all, they come in generous portions at affordable prices. I highly recommend their Char Kway Teow. Their tea tarik is also highly recommended and it tastes the same as the ones in malaysia. Owners are extremely friendly which is a huge plus. Definitely will return to try other dishes.

Best Malaysian food on the West, maybe best in Melbourne!. Now, I've travelled back and forth to Malaysia many times now and am a keen hawker food fan. I've eaten at the dirtiest road side stalls and food courts from Melaka, all the way through Tanjung Malim and up to Penang, and I've got to say that Tasty Gate is one of the few Malaysian restaurants around Melbourne that is actually trying (with the ingredients available here, remember, everything tastes different in Malaysia) to bring that 'authentic flavour.'

I can't stop eating the laksa, it's got a great strong curry flavour with minimal coconut, that's the way it's supposed to be! Many, many Malaysian restaurants seem to pour cans of coconut milk into their laksas, which isn't Malaysian at all. I digress, the owner, his wife and son and other staff are incredibly friendly and good for a chat. All portions are generous, the char kway teow has the 'burned wok flavour' which it should, the teh tarik is spot on, and the ice kachang is yum (more condensed milk though please!).

You know you're onto a good thing when you see plenty of Malaysian natives coming to Tasty Gate to eat and socialise. It's my new favourite Malaysian restaurant!

Werribee. Tried lots of their dish and love them. great authentic food. Overall good food with the exception of rendang. Would highly recommend this place.

I went to the opening night and loved all the food and services. I have been back every week since and can't get enough. I have never had Malaysian till now and won't be going elsewhere to soon. I recommend tastygate to everyone 10/10.

Amazing. Really good food ,excellent service ,if you come to Werribee ,then this one is worth giving a go.

The new chef has arrived. For those who had a not very good experience, give yourself another chance. According to Thomas Tay, the horfun is better now. That being said, the horfun was actually quite good before.

-----13 Sep, 2014-----

You can try the nice nice new cheesy baked rice.

-----31 May, 2014-----

Please try the new Yam Basket. You will not be disappointed.

-----04 Jan, 2014-----

The Ayam goreng is good. The beehoonmee goreng is good, teh ping is good. I like the attifude of the owner and staffs who want to get feedback. Keep it up.
Serena Tan
The curries are wonderful and the desserts are rich in true blue Malaysian flavour. The pumpkin curry is a must try. The satay sauce is home made with crunchy peanuts. They are open until 10pm which is great for folks out in the West looking for supper. We can't wait to Ho

Not quite right!. Very average Malaysian food. The pictures for this restaurant is quite deceiving are not at all as the food that comes out. My Beef was very dry and and hard, presentation was poor, Over all experience is not what i thought it would be.

Also i reckon the owners are a bit to over whelmed and does not give you space to eat, the female owner stood there watching me while i put a mouthful and immediately asked how it was. Very off putting.

I know new restaurants are always over whelmed when they open. Quite frankly i think they were not prepared at all. Food took a long time to come, and then we wanted to order dessert and no one gave us any attention for 20 mins. So we left!

Do not be fooled by the pics!
MadAboutFood
Not worth the time and money!. Well being a massive Malaysian food junkie I was really exciting about a Malaysian restaurant opening on our doorstep. Unfortunately my excitement was soon a forgotten memory after visiting Tasty Gate.

Firstly there is no Menu out the front, I was obliged to walk in and ask for a take away menu, only to be greeted by what seemed to be the owners and I was quickly ushered to a seat to read the menu. (As though I had decided to eat in).

So after reading through the menu, I did decide to stay put and eat in. I ordered the Beef Rendang, which is a Malaysian classic and mind you TastyGate had some pretty stiff competition according to my Highly strung palate for Malay food. Melbourne has some pretty fab Malaysian Restaurants to say the least.

Whilst waiting for my meal one of the female owners walked over to have chat. Apparently her family migrated from Malaysia to Melbourne to start the new restaurant. She was very friendly and told me their Malaysian food had passed the Authenticity test according to previous diners the day before and she hoped we would have a similar experience.

Anyway my food eventually arrived, yes to be honest it was on the slow side. My rice landed on the table 10 minutes before my Beef Rendang & the waiting staff seemed overwhelmed when a few more people walked in and ordered meals.
So my beef arrived, the meat was over cooked, hard & the flavors were well below any of my previous Malaysian encounters. I did not enjoy the meal at all, this Malaysian Classic was ruined. Such a shame.

Before I left I ordered a warm beverage, the classic Tea Tarik. It took me 20 minutes to flag down anybody to take my order on a very quiet night. I finally got my order in and The Tea Tarik was not bad at all.

I was very disappointed that the food was well below par. I may try them again in 6 months to see if things have improved. But from my first encounter it's not worth the time and money.
Phoenix
True malaysian food. My partner and I have been coming here since it opened. The food is delicious, serving size generous and the price affordable, and what's best, its authentic with friendly staff. We have tried nearly the entire menu and we both like the typical Malaysian foods i.e. beef randang, curry laksa, roti canai, nasi lamak, chicken rice and loads more.
The only flaw I could think of is the fact that they are new and more time is needed to train waiters/waitresses and to adapt to the influx of customers.
