Review El Burro - Williamstown

Went here on a voucher deal and had the 7 tapas. Thought they'd be fairly small and ed need more, but pleasantly surprised to find we were all more than full. The pork belly and corn were our favorites.

A Great place to have dinner , if you like to share food well this is perfect as you can sample more dishes together

Loved this place! Everything we had was delicious. The highlights for me were the pork belly, paella and their loaded patatas bravas.

Tried this place over a year ago, food is still very delicious as before. Ooh make sure you tried the limonada. It is very refreshing! Yum!

Delicious food. Very attentive staff. On the ball. Quick service. Would happily eat here over and over if I lived locally. Shared a mix of Bravas, Arrancini, croquettes and a couple extras... which was a great plan. The loaded Bravas were massive and good value. Amazing flavours and textures. I didn't like the calamari slider only due to excessive margarine flavour dominating and I hate margarine. Had a Friday night cocktail value jug: Back Chat- apple cinnamon deliciousness! Great find. Decor OK.

We order the Nachos Bravas, vegetarian and seafood paella and homemade lemonade. All we're absolutely delicious quick service on the appetiser while paella took some time but most definitely worth it.

Amazing food but the front of house staff really need some training as they can’t seem to cope when the restaurant gets busy. A real let down for how great the chefs are. Recommend dining here during non peak times so you have a good experience.

We have dined multiple times here however in this instance it was for 2 of us on a Saturday lunch service on the 05/05/2018. I can not speak highly enough of the two staff members that were working front of house this day. We were greeted immediately upon entering and as the restaurant wasn't overly busy yet they let us choose where we wanted to sit. Very prompt in coming over to take orders and drinks and always attentive throughout the service checking we were fine with our drinks or that the food was fine. As always the food was sensational. The dip of the day was beetroot with cheese throughout and it was so nicely balanced it was the perfect combination. The Paella was delicious and cooked just right. Can not speak more highly of the food quality especially for the price you are paying. Great little find in this town and we will be back many more times to come.

We had dinner here a few weeks ago for a cousins and were not disappointed. Actually a bit of disappointment over being so full we could sample more dessert lol ut was such a great meal. We were a large, loud group dining with 3 young kids and it is often hard to find a place we can enjoy delicious food in a setting that is kid friendly. El Burro has some kid friendly choices; the eggplant dip and fried chicken were a hit and everyone was watering out the mouth over the pork belly theu were happy to cater to allergies or fusspots ie requests for no spice or things on the etc. Service was astounding. Will be backagain minus spawn. Only reason it gota 4 instead of 5 is I haven't tried the rest of the menu but am planning to soon!

When we come to Williamstown a visit to el BURRO for tapas is always on our ‘must do’ list. We were lucky enough this time to be here on a Thursday and sampled their ‘special’ chicken sliders which were priced at just $4 each. The crispy chicken filling made these a ‘present from heaven’- definitely the nicest slider I have ever tasted. The jugs of Sangria on special for $20 for a litre were also a tempting option. I settled for a 200ml glass of the white sangria for $8 but after just one sip – of the nectar from heaven- I regretted not buying a 500ml jug for $16. The stuffed mushrooms are always one of our favourites as is the pork belly which melts in your mouth yet has a lovely crispy crackling. In the past, we have tried their larger shared meal of Carne Paella which was also enjoyable. However, my favourite dining out, experience is always a selection of Tapas and el BURRO has wonderful Tapas. I must revisit in my memory the Chicken slider once more. The little bun was soft with a perfect golden brown dome. The crispy battered chicken peeked out from its soft bed, just enough to be alluring, yet retaining a sense of mystery as to what accompanied it. The ratio of filling to bun was just right, enabling the slider to be eaten with dignity whilst providing the perfect balance of flavours. Service as always was of a very high standard.

A returning customer, the service on Saturday night was terrible. We waited for 15 minutes before asking if we could order drinks. And it took another 2 hours to get 5 tapas dishes. A real shame because the food is very tasty and very reasonably priced. Not keen on returning - 2 hours for finger food is ridiculous!
Martess Farrugia
Excellent food. We bought a voucher on cudo. I must say well worth it

Waited for 20 mins before being asked if we would like to order drinks. Went on a Monday night not busy , service was terrible , but food was ok. Very pricey $55.00 for Paella which is a bit steep . Had to wait ages for our meals to come out , which for some reason was coming out at all different times .

My favourite restaurant in the west! I have been going to this great little spot for years. The seafood paella and the cured salmon are my favourite. Very highly recommended.

Amazing food! Every bite was bursting with flavours. We ordered so much food and we were super excited that we got to eat it again when we went home. Very impressed! :)

Tonight was our first visit to El Burro and we absolutely loved it! We had the Graze Banquet it was the most delicious tapas ever, the selection was fantastic. We also had a paella that was full of flavour and delicious. Everyone left unable to eat another bite. The beetroot and feta dip was to die for! Thank you for a fantastic night. We will be back

The food is devine, with so many GF options for glutards like myself .... and the espresso martini is second to none 😍

I really enjoyed my visit to El Burro!
Service was prompt and the food was delicious. A friend and I shared the chicken sliders, the nacho bravas with pulled beef and calamari. I loved the chicken sliders and the nacho bravas - full of flavour and really filling.
I didn’t really like the calamari though - it was a bit too oily for my liking.

Best beef tacos I’ve ever had although super messy because of all the juice!

Average food ... wouldn’t come back

As others mentioned, decent food but slow service. Came on a weekend and the place was 4 tables full. Took almost an hour for our last dish to come out - we ordered 2 tapas, 2 tacos and 1 large shared dish. Not complicated dishes. We noted some people who got there before us were still waiting for their food by the time we left ( and a table who got there after us seemed to be getting their orders quicker than others).

Got a Groupon voucher for the 6 course tapas menu for two. The eggplant dip had a nice, complex flavour. The jamon was good, as were the croquettes and wings, which had a nice crunch and tasty sauce. The tacos were fairly average...which leads me to my main complaint...

We ordered two tacos because it was Taco Tuesday, so assumed we'd pay the discounted price. Zane (?) told us we'd get two tacos per serving, and we assumed we would at the discounted price. When we went to pay, the waitress told us it was actually full price. Zane didn't explain any of this, so we felt they didn't communicate properly or misled us. Felt kind of ripped off, and the attitude of the waitress was very unhelpful and unwelcoming. Decent food but don't expect decent service.
Aurnie
I would say food had great flavours and really nice menu ! Scallops .. mussels and twist on bravas with pork belly and bacon was a win BUT the service was slow and very cold ... no intro to special menu or even a small chat on how the food is like and all which is really common in Melbourne :) food + ambience + service is what it makes a complete package and if they just add a more focus on service .. it’s bang on !!
Rachael
Waiter was very helpful, came in on a Groupon. Extremely worthwhile and fun experience. Great value. A lot of thought put into the menu and selection. Great board for daily specials. Well made sangria

Good selection of tapas dishes. All very tasty. Service was friendly and efficient.

Cannot use Zomato gold offer without booking
Bensydenham97
Went there on taco Tuesday and used my Zomato Gold 1+1 , we ordered tacos and a couple of tapas dishes and were informed that tacos were full priced but we already knew this as z gold states this in t&cs. Staff were very attentive and polite ... the food was incredible too. Huge compliments to the chefs! It was like a party in my mouth and everybody was invited. Definitely will be back.
Ionathegenie
Used Zomato Gold 1+1 food here. Presented to waitress and activated upon ordering. Same waitress then told us about taco tuesdays. We ordered it. When the bill came, we were charged full price for the tacos without an explanation before we asked. The waitress serving us apologised which was appreciated but another staff member that seemed more senior told us as a matter of fact ly that we should have read the terms and conditions of zomato gold and that there was nothing that can be done. Really? There IS something that could have been done better in terms of service and courtesy. Paying full price because of the restrictions set in ZG’s t&c isn’t an issue but telling your customers off that they should have known isnt very nice.
Food was good though credits to the kitchen. Donkey wings were excellent.
LJ
Great food and really nice atmosphere. Great for our family get-together. Red wine sangria was perfect on such a warm night. Restaurant did run out of large bottles of sparkling water to share but they provided a few small bottles to share instead. Was a lovely night and would definitely go again.

I’ve been here before, and dishes are fine. It’s my second time dinning here. It’s busy in the evening of Tuesday, I’ve got my Coke Zero 10mins after ordered, and we only got a bread and Taco after 40mins waits. Really slow.
Nicole
We came here on a Groupon voucher, and this restaurant exceeded all of our expectations! The food was amazing, plentiful and tasty. The wait staff were very friendly and attentive. We will be back again!

Came here on a Sunday night because we had a Groupon deal.. the area was pretty quite for a Sunday night however the restaurant did look fairly busy.. the Groupon deal came with 2 entrees, a paella and a jug of sangria..
The food was ok, however wasn’t anything special.. the pork belly and corquettes did take a while before it was served, the pork belly was very fatty which is expected I guess but the skin wasn’t crispy and was a bit chewy.. the croquets were ok, however wasn’t as tasty.. the paella also felt like it was over cooked.. though portion was pretty big and there was a lot of ingredients used..
Sangria was quite nice.. Probably won’t return based on the quality of food and price..

Randomly walked into this place with a few friends for dinner and what a gem of place!
Friendly staff, fantastic food with a unique spin and everything we had was amazing especially for the cost.
The bread that was complementary looked average however was amazing!
We had the calamari, chicken wings, nachos and chicken tacos.
Would definitely come here again.
THE HUNGRY CAT
Went to El Burro around 6.30pm on a Thursday night. The place was pretty quiet when we arrived with only a few tables seated but filled up quickly after our arrival, and was really buzzing by the time we were about half way through our meal which made for a really great atmosphere. Staff were friendly and seated us promptly even though we didn't have a booking. Food was tasty, we started with some jamon which came with some warm and crispy bread which was fantastic. Mac and cheese croquettes were a winner, as was the grilled chorizo, the highlight was definitely the pork belly. Crispy crackling, and tender, salty pork with sweet pear chutney was super delicious! Washed it all down with some Estrella, a really crisp and refreshing Spanish beer and finished off with some churros with chocolate sauce. Will most definitely be back for more of that pork!
Hungry Hieu
We arrived a little before dinner so only a couple of tables was occupied although the place quickly filled up after an hour. The staff was welcoming when we entered and warmly greeted us when we left.

For starters we got the calamari sliders and croquettes of the day; mac and cheese. The food took some time to come out as chef starts their night. The croquettes was creamy and melts in your mouth while giving a nice crunch with its crispy golden outer layer. On the other hand, the calamari came in a fluffy toasted butter bun
and calamari wasn't over cooked.

For our mains we got the Enorme paella. This was great for sharing as the serving is huge and come with generous amount of chorizo and topped with fresh seafood. The paella was spicy so adding a nice kick. To compliment our food we wash this down with a red sangria.

3.5/5

Went here on a groupon. Value for money.

Pork belly was tender and the crackling was crispy.
Croquettes were nice but could have done with a bit more sauce. The let down was the paella. Ours was burnt and could taste it through our paella which was disappointing because the flavour was good but let down by the burnt rice.

For all its spectacular views, Williamstown seemed a rather nice and understated suburb in the evening. We found ourselves at El Burro, flicking through a menu filled with robust Spanish, Mexican, and Latino favourites. Sharing is definitely recommended. We started at the beginning of the menu and worked our way through it, picking 1-2 things from each section. We were hungry and ambitious and we ordered enough to feed a village.

This is a great local. Food is fantastic and never disappoints. The place has a great vibe too. My go-to for Spanish food in Melbourne’s west!

Great food and great service! Try the cocktail specials, they are to DIE for. Paella was our favourite dish of the night, so tasty and fresh, it tasted like it was made with so much love and care. Definitely worth the wait. Safe to say, we will be back very soon!!

This place was awesome! Highly recommend, everything we had exceeded our expectations and it wasn't overly expensive. Will definitely be back

4.5 🌟
We ventured across the bridge to check out El Burro Tapas in Williamstown and were so impressed with what we found! We had the Loaded Bravas, Chicken Tacos, Corn, Meatballs and Mussels from the specials menu, topped off with a jug of their homemade lemonade.

The Loaded Bravas ($22) was definitely our favourite dish and just a super delicious concept with crispy potatoes smothered with a huge eady mix of bacon, pork belly, chorizo, pulled beef, capsicum, aioli, bbq sauce, salsa sofrito and cheese. Also a massive serve so more than enough for two to share.

That being said there were no disappointing dishes - everything was fresh, flavoursome and fantastic. We loved how fresh and light the tacos ($14) were with crispy chicken, tomato and avocado salsa, jalapeños, sour cream, coriander and manchego cheese. My partner pointed out that they are quite different to most tacos which are loaded in sauce - these ones let the ingredients sing through beautifully. Also loved the super fragrant steamed mussels ($16) with a spicy tomato based sauce - currently a special but may be making a comeback to the permanent menu. Loved the light crispy toasted bread it was served with - which also went great with the meatballs! The meatballs ($14) were nice and moist and a very filling size. Always gotta get corn on the cob ($8) and these were delish smothered in manchego cheese and paprika mayo.

The homemade lemonade ($11 for 500ml) was delicious but a bit too sweet for us, we diluted with some water and it was perfect.

All in all a fantastic meal and great value for the quality of dishes served. They also run lots of specials throughout the week and have 3 set menu options from $37 to $57pp. Definitely recommend for a great Mexican/Spanish feed perfect for date night or groups!
Chronicles Of Nardia
El Burro is located on Nelson Place in Williamstown. Offering a great range of Spanish cuisine & tapas, we were excited to go along & try it. We visited on a Thursday night & the place was buzzing. A very friendly & fun atmosphere & the staff were fantastic, helping us narrow down our choices from the large menu.

We opted for a range of tapas and share dishes & a jug of Sangria, an absolute essential if you visit.

From the tapas menu we loved the paella balls, a Spanish take on arancini & full of flavour. The pork belly was a standout, perfectly crispy & tender meat served with a pear chutney which balanced out the fattiness of the pork. The fried chicken sliders were delicious too.

A friend had recommended we try the Carnitas, pulled pork tacos served with a pineapple salsa. A great suggestion & they were polished off quick smart.

From the share menu we tried the calamari, perfectly cooked, crispy & tender and a generous serving. The loaded bravas was a huge dish, crispy potato bravas topped with bacon, pork belly, chorizo, pulled beef, capsicum, aioli, bbq sauce, salsa & cheese. I felt there was a bit too much going on to be able to appreciate all the elements but a tasty dish nonetheless.

El Burro seems to be a popular place, the place was full by the time we left & it’s not surprising as Rob & the team were lovely hosts. A great range of dishes & a fun place to eat. Thanks so much for having us.
The World’s My Oyster
Came here on a $45 Cudo voucher and for that price we think the meal was alright. We did feel the deal was dishonest because the first thing that was said to us when we sat down was we only get two pieces of any of the tapas we order no matter whether on the menu the serve says 4pieces. It is not stated anywhere on the T&Cs of the voucher that we were being served smaller servings limited to 2 pieces. It seemed like we had no other option than to accept the limitation as we had already sat down.

We ordered the croquettes which were Mac and cheese but we felt it had no discernible cheese inside and there was no stinginess of melted cheese when you bit into it. When we asked the waitress to confirm if we only get two pieces, she said “yes, that’s how it is with the deal” and then walk back behind the counter to talk to another waiter and we could hear the male waiter loudly declare “THAT WAS THE FIRST THING I TOLD THEM WHEN THEY SAT DOWN”. The service for the whole night was pretty much the same brash, impersonal and uncomfortable tone.

The chicken sliders were very small and flat. The fried chicken was nice but the bun was deflated and there seemed to be an overall lack of care in the preparation of the dish.

The pork belly was crunchy and very tender, but again you only get two pieces so we had to order two serves to get the 4 pieces that would have been one standard serving size.

The sangria was fruity but did not taste very alcoholic at all.

The best two dishes was the sticky lamb ribs which was tender and fatty in the middle and nicely charred on the outside. The Loaded Bravas was the other winner, as the potato cubes were crunchy and all the toppings were delicious mixed together.

We left feeling about 70% full and while the food overall was not bad, we probably would not return. It wasn’t a terrible meal for $45 but there definitely wasn’t $100+ worth of food and drink as stated on the voucher given the serve of the tapas is halved depending on what you order.

We arrived at about 7:30pm on a Friday and there was only about 4 tables occupied (I overheard another also using a Cudo voucher), so I guess it sums up there is better Spanish food than what they have here.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: as soon as I walked in, I felt a really warm and cosy vibe. The place was bustling but not to the point where you couldn’t hear the person next to you. The staff are very attentive which I liked!

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: they have a great selection of dishes on their menu. We were lucky to try many things from the menu. Some highlights were the paella - the arborio was al dente and had a generous amount, the seafood was fresh and had many different kinds, the taste was splendid and exactly how I want a paella to be. The fish tacos were another winner - it had a good punch of lime to it and the fish was fried perfectly. I really enjoyed the meatballs and the pork belly!! The pork belly was really bang for your buck as it was four massive pieces and the skin was so crispy - very impressed.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: the meatballs had great flavours to it, however the meat was a little dry. Nonetheless I still smashed down the whole dish and thank goodness they gave us bread on the side to dip the tomato based sauce as it was delicious!

🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great humble restaurant in Williamstown - I can’t wait to come back for more. A very perfect date night spot too!

We’ve been going to El Burro for many years, and we keep going back because we love the location, the staff are always hospitable and the food is fantastic.
AaronN
We found the tapas here quite disappointing. Whilst the jamon and fried chicken were nice, the paella balls were stodgy, the patatas underseasoned (and accompanied by a meh red sauce), and the lamb ribs were just not nice (sticky and icky). Not recommended.
Espy Eats
4.5
This was our second visit to El Burro (our first evening visit) and as we walked through the door we were met with ambient lighting and friendly chatter, a really happy Saturday night vibe.

We ordered all dishes to share as the menu leans this way and we were happy to follow.

From the Tapas section, we started with the Paella balls and corn. These paella balls had a wonderful smoky flavour, a lovely crunch on the outside and full of flavour on the inside. More flavousome than arancini balls as the rice itself was full of flavour. The corn had a lovely bbq char and was served with the traditional spicy mayo and finely grated cheese, a spectacular start for our evening.

From the tacos menu we went for went the chicken and the fish tacos. These tacos were filled with super fresh ingredients of avo, coriander, corn and tomatoes, keeping these babies fresh, light and tasty. My personal favourite was the chicken as it had the heat of the included jalapeños.

From the share section the calamari was dusted in a lightest batter, a crunchy coating, with an awesome delicately spiced flavour that was cooked perfectly.

We also chose the Donkey wings, these spicy wings are finger licking good, a nice level of heat, enough to make the taste buds sing but without having to call the fire brigade.

For drinks tonight we had a Cavalier, a local beer from the west and a jug of the Spicy Margarita Cocktail (WARNING this drink includes jalapeños and has a spiced salty rim). OMG this cocktail was like a margarita on steroids and quite frankly better than any margaritas I drank in Mexico. Quite possibly one of the best margaritas I have ever had, my taste buds are dancing and Im not leaving until this jug is empty!!! My tip..... don’t offer to be the designated driver.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Previous Review
Took visiting rellies on a tour of Melbourne yesterday and wound up at El Burro for lunch. Probably the nicest looking restaurants in that strip of Williamstown, El Burro’s menu was more enticing than I had expected when someone asked if I wanted Mexican... for starters is less Mexican and more Spanish tapas meets American and there are some really well made cocktails to boot.
We tried their take on an espresso martini made with vanilla vodka and served a lot sweeter than your typical espresso martini. The stubborn donkey was a spiced rum ginger dram and super tasty with bitters.
Food wise we did tacos, sliders and a delightful sous vide pork belly. My favourites were the slow cooked beef taco which has jalapeño which gave it a reasonable level of chilli. The crispy chicken slider had serious crunch which contrasted nicely with the pillow perfect soft bread bun. We waited a while for the pork belly to come out but it was worth it crispy crackle top and tender meaty goodness.
Service was a little bit clunky and I think our waiting staff member must have been fairly new on the job so allowances were made. Would come back and try some paella next time as it sure looked good.
Eat_today_diet_tomorrow
We had tried a bunch of different dishes including Croquette, Carnitas (pulled pork tacos), fatty lamb ribs and Mariscos paella. The ribs were divine, the meat fell off the bone and was also crsipy at the same time. The croquette and carnitas were also amazing.
Would definitely recommend this place if you happen to be in Williamstown.
I had a previous review from about 4 years back that I have deleted as this place has changed significantly in the intervening period.
To begin with determining what was gluten free was a bit of a chore. It's not listed on the menu but they do have gluten-free tortillas that the tacos can be served in, but the chicken tacos can't be gluten-free because of a "crumb". Then, even though the Nachos Bravas does say that it's gluten-free, we were told that it can't be because the potato is deep-fried with glutenous things. (That isn't typically a problem).
Man the food took ages...
Dishes (eventually) delivered1. Corn Chips. This is a small bowl of very salty corn chips with some mashed avocado and tomato & onion salsa on the side. For the price, not very impressive. Our avocado had a hair in it, which I am assured is very unusual.2. Nachos Bravas with pulled beef. Somehow they managed to get the potato both overcooked and not very hot (which is a feat). The beef was barely above room-temperature and the whole thing (which we didn't come close to finishing) was just unpleasant.
3. Paella balls. Noteworthy only because they were hot, but otherwise lacking anything interesting apart from a nicely crisped skin.4. Beef tacos (sans BBQ sauce). Just okay. About the usual.5. Sticky Lamb Ribs. A small serve considering the price. Very hot (temperature), which was a nice change, but probably overcooked (I say probably because they may have been going for a dried out texture). Lamb ribs can be a bit random in terms of meat:fat ratios, but these were pretty poorly served in that area. Flavour was pretty uninspiring.
Between the wait staff who didn't know the gluten-free options to the ordinary food to how long it take to be delivered the whole experience was just indifferent.
This place was pretty good last time I was there. This time... definitely not.
4.5 El Burro’s Spanish menu focuses on sharing and nibbling. Pick from tapas, tacos, larger share plates or Paella on their meat focused, fairly traditional Spanish menu. Having spent a lot of time in Spain we were particularly excited to try the tapas at El Burro. With many...
Good food, friendly owner but rude waitress. (The food was rudely placed on the table many times) Her attitude affected our mood and we left with unhappy dinning
We loved this place, and what gave it that 5 stars was the friendly staff and food. We were treated very well, and the food was absolutely fab! It’s a really cute and Spanish inspired interior. Close to the beach, recommend visiting here anytime.
Dine And Dash
El Burro, newly located at 209 Nelson Place in Williamstown, is a fantastic Spanish restaurant which has a menu full of all your favourite Spanish dishes. We were very eager to come here. There are not that many Spanish restaurants in Melbourne and not a cuisine I’m very familiar with and hence I was eager to try.
We were able to order a large selection of dishes from their extensive new menu and so we ordered the Nachos Bravas, Chicken Slider, Corn, Meatballs, Pollo and Carne Taco and the twice cooked Lamb Ribs.
The chicken slider was delicious. The fried chicken was crunchy and juicy and it tasted delicious. The corn cob was sweet and juicy and went beautifully with the mayonnaise and paprika. The Nachos Bravas was surprisingly one of our favourite dishes. It was not what one would expect when ordering nachos but instead it was a huge serving of crispy potatoes with black beans, guacamole, tomato salsa, sour cream, jalapeños, spring onions and cheese. It was absolutely delightful.
We loved the soft tacos and although we normally prefer hard-shell tacos these were so good I could be tempted to change my mind! These stunning tacos one chicken and one beef were both rich with flavour, perfectly balanced and a generous serving. The Lamb Ribs, drenched in a jalapeño honey glaze that was absolutely spectacular, fell off the bone, they were so tender and succulent. Simply amazing.
We were very grateful to have been invited here and extremely pleased with our whole dining experience! I can safely say – go check it out – you won’t be disappointed. The best of Spain right here in Williamstown.
Tapas - must I say any more?! Well I will. I'm a tapas fiend. Thoroughly enjoyed every dish. Calamari sliders are my jammmmmm. And the lamb literally fell off the bone with zero effort. I also thanked the Paella Gods for giving Melbs a good paella, finally.
Let's not forget about the drinks. Awesome cocktail menu. Drank the sangria quicker than I took a picture. Sorry not sorry.
Love your work guys!
Food Fiend Melbourne
I took a friend on a delicious lunch date this weekend, as we adventured all the way over the Westgate bridge, to Williamstown, to visit El Burro Tapas on Nelson Place. We got there bang on 12pm, when they opened, and were warmly greeted by staff.
We ordered a selection of dishes from their extensive menu and knew we were in for a feast when everything came out! We started with a jug of red wine sangria and then dug in to our 7 chosen dishes: corn on the cob, calamari and chicken sliders, salchicha (chorizo), pescado (fish) tacos, donkey wings and the loaded bravas (loaded fries).
The sangria was delicious and had huge chunks of pear down the bottom, which gave it a nice sweet flavour. It also didn't taste super alcoholic, so I still felt OK to drive home after 2 glasses (and a lot of food haha).
The sliders were both delicious. The calamari was a nice twist and the chicken tasted like a classic burger (with cheese). The ciabatta buns were super soft and slightly warmed and the creamy condiments on both matched perfectly.
The chorizo was nice, but a very small serve in comparison to other dishes that we ordered. The two slices came served with a very generous serve of red onion jam and goat's cheese. I could have eaten way more than one. The corn was delicious with cheese on top and mayo underneath.
The fish tacos were cooked perfectly and the tortillas were nice and soft. I feel like the flavour of the batter on the fish could have been a bit saltier, but otherwise the fish was nice and juicy.
The donkey wings had a great flavour but were a bit dry. I also found them a bit tricky to eat, but I'm not usually a wings kinda gal. There were 4 in the basket, which was perfect for sharing between 2 people.
The loaded bravas was our favourite dish. It was a huge serve of potato topped with bacon, shredded beef, pork belly, chorizo (so much meat!), capsicum, aioli, salsa, cheese and BBQ sauce - it was perfect for sharing and great to nibble on while we were finishing our sangria.
We visited on a rainy Saturday afternoon and had a fantastic time. I am very jealous of the Williamstown locals who will get to enjoy this delicious food and refreshing sangria on the lazy Summer afternoons that are coming our way. We really enjoyed our food and will both be looking for an excuse to venture back over the bridge so we can come back again.
Thanks for having us, team :)
Bought a groupon deal few years ago and have been many times since. The veg paella is more flavoursome than the others, tapas are great and although small but isn't that what its meant to be? The mussels are worth a try too.
Tacos with a hair inside! Even after I complained they were not apologetic!
Only one staff member (the guy) was more welcoming, but in general both 2 staff members lacked passion and experience ( in particular a young girl).
Problem solving needs improvement.
Unfortunately, el burro did not meet my expectations as shown on the internet.
Very disappointing.
Great sharing restaurant, absolutely loved the tapas & the loaded potatoes were amazing, wouldve given it a 5 but the paella was not as flavour packed as ive had before.
Sangria was delicious.
Good service.
Wouldve loved to try the slides & cocktails... might mean a trip back is in order.
We went here with a Groupon. I thought a 10 course tapas meal would fill us up but in reality with this deal you would need to buy more of the dishes or maybe a dessert. Also it depends on the tapas you have ordered since some will be smaller than others.
My favourite was the chorizo and goats cheese. Least favourite was the arancini balls and the mushroom and goats cheese dish. Both batters made these two tapas taste very dry. The arancini balls were too large. I would have preferred smaller arancini balls since I feel the arancini balls wouldn’t be as dry.
Prawns were also a highlight despite being small.
Sangria was nice. We only tried the red sangria.
The dishes included with the deal chosen by the staff were a bit disappointing since they only consisted of cold meats and dip though I did enjoy the dip.
I felt a bit underwhelmed because of how small the tapas were. Looking back if I had known there was a paella Groupon deal I would have purchased that instead.
However for $20 per person (for a 4 person deal Groupon) it’s a nice cheap dinner but it won’t be entirely filling.
Round 2: UPDATE!
Visited this restaurant again to try their Paella and a few other items. The restaurant is located along the busy strip in Williamstown, the perfect spot to hit on a hot day. The highlight was the Paella which had both seafood and chicken. We also enjoyed the other tapas items such as the corn, roast chicken and cheese croquette and the perfectly cooked pork belly.
Came here on a groupon with friends. 10 tapas and a jug of sangria for $22 each! What a great deal!
You get to choose 6 tapas and they give you 4 appetisers which count as tapas. The food was delicious and there is a wide range to choose from. We only added 1 extra dish and dessert to end the night. The food was tasty and they had a range of variety from seafood to pork belly.
Obsessedwithfood
Paella - seafood was definitely not fresh, chewy and tasted like it had been defrosted straight from the freezer. Had no flavour to the paella as well. My friend had a bite and gave up.
Corn cob - worst corn cob I’ve ever had, was soggy and definitely not charred - it tasted like it had been left in water to boil for so long then smothered in mayonnaise.
The tacos - I’ve had better at a food court
The sliders - deep fried chicken was a let down and the calamari was also not fresh. Bun had so much oil I could squeeze it out.
The croquette - was the only dish I enjoyed which had the crunch but how can you fault something deep fried?
We ordered stuffed mushrooms as well which had cheese in them which were delicious.
Ordered churro which was my favourite out of all the dishes.
My friend and I drove from Keysborough to Williamstown(almost an hour) for this tapas which was a disappointment, we were starving and that’s the only reason we finished our food and left with a smile.
The service was attentive and friendly I’d give that a 10/10 but the food needs a lot of work...sorry guys
Absolutely great service, waiters were lovely, the atmosphere was cosy, comforting and hospitable, lovely food, would recommend wine and tapas, would come again!
Simply great! We sampled most of the tapas, salads and paella. Every dish was faultless. Relaxed, good service, fantastic authentic food, reasonably priced. A definite must!
Interesting spot to sit outside and people watch with a glass of wine and feast on yummy tapas. Overall quite a delicious meal with lots of menu options. Funny enough, I loved the soft fresh bread the most! Would definitely revisit.
Tried this place over a year ago, even now food is still delicious and as good as before. totally impressed with everything. ooh the limonada tastes real good. yum
Having been to Spain multiple times and having tried a range of authentic Spanish tapas before I can say hands town El Burro is pretty damn good! I sampled a selection of dishes which were all outstanding. My favorite were the crumbed mushroom with goats cheese and the pulled beef taco. I only wish I had room for dessert! The churros sounded so good and I’m sure would have been awesome too.
The staff were friendly and attentive and the decor was pleasant. I will definitely be visiting again soon!
You Had Me At Haloumi
Ordered a few tapas dishes along with the grande paella washed down with sangria. Highlights were the succulent, melt in your mouth pork belly with lovely crispy crackling. I would and will come back for this. I also enjoyed the sardines which were fillets of sardines lightly coated in a batter and fried. Very tasty! The grande paella was tasty although different. There were flavours of dill, additions of various vegetables such as zucchini and potatoes. The seafood could be fresher. Decor wise it was pretty bare and cafe like. They need to make it more cosy/intimate and Spanish like. Service was good. All up a good satisfying meal without having to go in to the city.
We truly enjoyed having a meal here. We were there for lunch after a badminton session and we were too hungry. The brain could not decide anything so we opted for the tasting tapas $35/person. 8 courses of tapas and by the 6th we were stuffed! I would definitely go back to try the paella!
OMG! Worst dining experience of my life. Staff were friendly enough but took forever to do anything. Food was below average, the calamari being inedible altogether. The meals came out 15 mins apart and not even in the correct order but worst of all is the noise...... Soooo loud, clearly on a busy night.
Beautiful tapis. Even though they were tiny little prawns they were definitely the best I’ve ever tasted. Can’t believe they were nearly empty on a Saturday lunch
Saw that this was highly ranked on Zomato and popped in to try it.
We came at about 7 on a Sunday and it was pretty quiet and we got a seat straight away!
We ordered lots of food, we always seem to over order because we want to try everything and end up getting a little too much!
We got olives, corn chips and dip to start with. All lovely, we also got chicken sliders, arancini ball, seta and maize.
After this we were very full and the price ended up being decent. About 78 for the two of us.
The only thing I could say that was bad was the people working. They cleared out plates away and asked if we wanted dessert when half of our meal wasn’t even complete. We got confused and weren’t sure if they forgot everything. And then they brought out the tapas one by one every 5 minutes or so.
They seemed to have problems processing the bill also. Not sure if they were just having a bad day!
We had the calamari, mushrooms, pork belly, crispy chicken tacos, loaded potatoes, and for drinks the spicy margaritas. Every single item was perfection, but the pork belly was the best we've ever had anywhere (and of course, it was the one thing we forgot to snap a pic of). Somehow the meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender, but the crackling was light, airy and crispy. Delicious. Really, perfect. I loved the margaritas; going to copy the chili addition for our next hosting event. All in all, what a pleasant surprise. We'll definitely be back.
Disappointed 😔
We ordered the corn chips with gauc and salsa to start. The salsa had such a strong taste of vinegar and had clearly been prepared a while ago as the tomato was mushy and the red onion had lost most of it's colour. Also for $13 I would expect more than a tiny portion of gauc.
The bravas (potato cubes) were ok but the tomato condiment tasted off.
The vegetal paella lacked seasoning. We were trying to find some salt and pepper or hot sauce on the tables but had no luck.
The service.. I absolutely hate when the server takes away dishes that still have a fair amount of food on them whilst you are still eating!!!
On the upside.. cocktails were pretty yummy.
Overall I didn't enjoy my experience. The food was below average and the pricing seemed too high for what was offered.
Came on a Monday night and ordered the Taste banquet (Monday special). We got 8 tapas and a jug of home made lemonade and left satisfied. After multiple visits the food is always to expectation and lovely. While it is a little on the pricey side, if you can afford to it's worth coming through the week when they have their specials on. The paella special on a Wednesday is great as well as the Monday night.
The food we had on this particular occasion was much like any other, the food all hot, tasty and leaves you feeling satisfied. The lemonade is quite tart which goes well with some of the fried tapas, worth a try if you're going down the non alcoholic route. For us the pork belly was a stand out, so tender and rich.. yum!
Daniel
Tried the NYE set menu because a la carte was not available. We had three people and paid $50 per person. The food we received was probably enough for one person. Everything was either fried or premade - not really a good way to showcase the restaurant’s food. A little disorganised in terms of serving the food, and some dishes doubled up on some tables.
This place! Hands down one of the best feeds
... EVER! A friendly & helpful waiter, fast service and fresh & tasty food. The tapas does not disappoint. We chose all the GF options & every single one done to perfection! The salchicha would be one of my faves - the combination of perfectly cooked chorizo, red onion jam & goats cheese is... well, perfect! The Maiz, Sardinia, Gamba, all melt in the mouth. As for the Cerdo, hands down THE best pork crackling I’ve had- in my life! Ever! Full stop!! The sides- beetroot salad, yum! The loses bravas, oh you won’t need the large serve unless you’re feeding a small nation! Oh special mention goes to the calamari, we were offered a GF version too- amazing! Great selection of beers, wines & cocktails with specials to choose from every week night!
Thanks again for another delicious night!
Food:5
Service:6
Fact that we got food poisoning: -100
Hard to see why the place scores so high. Maybe it’s the novelty of it all.
Would I go again: no
Would I recommend to others: no
Went for dinner on a Friday night and as expected was very busy with a good ambiance. The food was well cooked however, we waited over an hour for the paella and then were told the order was “lost in the mix” which is very poor service and is unacceptable. We ended up ordering tacos which I found to be mediocre which is not what you want when you pay $24 for 4. The fact that we had to order a takeaway pizza after we left gives you an idea of the portion sizing. All in all, wasn’t impressed.
Absolutely incredible food- We ordered 7 different dishes to share and each one was on point and flavoursome. Will definitely be coming back here. I recommend Mushrooms from side dishes and the Vegetarian Paela.
Took my partner here for his bday dinner Monday night really quite wasn't sure if they were open still cos we got there around 8:30pm I sat down served by a lovely man we proceed to go for the 8 tapas for $25 pp I added paella cos I thought we would need it but boy was I wrong! Highlight of the 8 course would def be the chorizo, corn, stuffed mushroom and the croquette of the day was not sure what was in it but it tasted like mash potato with bacon and cheese. My partner and I could def eat more of those deliciousness. When we got to our paella I was too stuffed we manage to neck half of it and toook the rest home. Definitely be back. 😊
Secret Taster
We had gone here for a Saturday lunch. Picked it purely on the reviews and the photos. It's a small restaurant, prob 40-50 seats. When we got there, the place was packed with two large tables. Feeling good when we saw so many people. We ordered a couple of dishes at a time. Just us testing the Waters'. Loved all of them. Bread is served warm - which always gets a tick from me. The sauce that came with the mussels was really nice to eat w bread. They have different specials during the week, so will go back to get a bargain.
Nice little place to go to for Spanish tappas but be prepared to pay much more than what it's worth. The paella was simply nice, for $55 you want it to be exceptional. The tacos were served cold and at $7 each we thought were overpriced. Might be worth going on a week night when they have specials on.
Visited El Burro last night with two friends and we all enjoyed ourselves. The food were well cooked and tasty. The corn cob was soo soft and juicy and fried chicken crispy and tangy.
I really liked the paella; it was beautiful, however my friends being salt lovers felt that it needed more salt but they still enjoyed the dish.
The only thing I didn't enjoy was the pineapple juice- it tasted bottled, was too sweet and pricey at $6
Service was attentive from the friendly staff. We are already planning our next visit!
Cool location! And cool food. Tapas are amazing. The pico de gallo sauce had coriander but without being soapy. The cocktails were excellent (they have Pimm's! I love pimm's). It is a good way to spend your evening meal, tasting varoious things, all of them 10/10. The only """"problem"""" is that the waitress need to be a bit more relaxed. Don't be so shy girls, it's all good.
We are always coming back for a Spanish fixed. Love the al the small bites and the pealla. The sangria was beautiful but I think it's abt time they change the menu a little bit. Getting bored of it after years of the same food. But it's still quality food. Keep up the good work.
Really friendly and hospitable staff, and some very yummy dishes. I could eat the chorizo tapas for days!
Very generous portions - found the arancini almost too big!
A few small tweaks in portions, flavours and ambiance and this place would go from very good to great!
I’ll definitely be back!
El burro is a wonderful restaurant that I will definitely be returning to.
Absolutely excellent service, I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere.
Thanks Brooke
Cute little restaurant with prompt and efficient service! We started with a jug of sangria which was pretty good. We had 4 of the appetisers followed by 6 of the tapas. We enjoyed almost every single one of them, except the meatballs that were bland and the pork belly that was a bit dry. To finish it off we had the flan de nata for dessert, which was my favourite part - so yummy! Would be back!
@forfoodiesake
Love this place, Rob the owner is such a legend and always great at looking after his guests. The tapas are single dishes, though reasonably priced. The service is fast considering how busy they are, and the restaurant has a great playful vibe. Strongly recommend for a social occasion, grab a jug of sangria and treat yourself to the paella or a selection of tapas!
Michelle
Great food. Excellent service. The Paella was perfection and Sangria wasn't far behind. The rest of the menu looks great too. Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu.
Amanda Turner
Phenomenal food! We came on a Monday night for the 25$ pp tapas banquet. Really enjoyed the mushrooms, croquettes, beef taco and the flan. You must try the drink La Pinela. We will be back!
Cat Mullen
Amazing food tonight! Had numerous appetisers and tapas dishes as well as the vegetable paella, so so yummy! Definitely returning! Staff were wonderful and accomodating.
A group of us visited El Burro today to listen to Paul Grant sing.
Paul is fantastic- he is worth 6/5.
El Burro is good.
Nice place- seats need backs though- stools are uncomfortable. Good customer service except that we did feel we were being rushed- we were one of three tables so why not remain open in the 4pm- 5pm bracket and make a few extra dollars on drinks, rather than shutting?
We had nachos, bread, olives, squid and paella. For drinks a bottle of red, 2 cocktails, diet coke, 2 vodka diet cokes, lemon lime bitters and red sangria. The cocktails were tasty, the red was standard, the sangria light on alcohol, and my diet coke was pricey at $3. It was literally 100ml from a can (that was shared with both the vodka coke drinks).
Will be back for more tunes with Paul.
I understand that tapas tends to divide people. You either love it or hate it. I really like the sharing aspect. Plenty of different tapas and although it was good the seafood tapas could be a little bit better.
Krystal Cameron
I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. There was a wide variety of food and the service was prompt. The tapas was delivered at a good, spread-out pace.
RRJosh
Have been here twice and really love it. The food is fantastic and the service really pleasant also. Wehad tacos which were a special, pork belly, chorizo with goats cheese, corn and a green salad. All 👌🏽 Only negative for me is the table set up is a bit weird. The tables of four are back to back so it's a bit squished. Looking forward to going back and trying more yummy food.
Highly rated on zomato and tapas?! Had to try this place! The food here was great, probably one of the better tapa places in Melbourne. The mushrooms, cured meat, chorizos and scallops were great. The croquettes and the chicken/pork belly/chrizo paella weren't as great. Service was good though. Decor could be better but that's expecting too much if guess. Definitely would be back again sometime!
Elletee
Loved it. Best tapas we've ever had. The starter plate - Turkish bread thinly sliced and I think slightly toasted. Best prosciutto I've ever tasted. And the dip. Yum. A lovely Sangria (we had the red) and the tapas dishes that followed were all delicious. Nice venue. Not too noisy. Efficient staff. All good.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
After a short trip to the Westside with the relatives, they were hankering after some Spanish food. We found ourselves at El Burro, not far from the Williamstown foreshore, settling in for a night of tapas feasting.
Vladimir Sabo
Very slow service, not a busy time yet took the staff 15min to bring us the menus and another 15min to ask us for order, had to prompt staff for a drink order, will not return.
As a self proclaimed Tapas Addict El Burro met and exceeded all of my expectations. We ordered the Beetroot Salad, Meatballs, Scallops and the Mushroom and Chorizo Croquettes. All tasty, but a special mention for the flavoursome Meatballs and the Scallops!! It was an absolute delight sitting in the afternoon sun outside and stuffing my face with all the tapas goodness! We will be back!
Used a livingsocial voucher to try this. Had a great awesome time! I actually went there 2 times in 1 week! That's how good I personally felt. The pork belly is one of the crispiest skin I had tried in a western cuisine! The corn was to die for! Unbelievably delicious! The scallop were also worth mentioning! Others were not bad. This voucher included a drink so I had the sangria on first night it was very very good! One of the sangrias I would actually reorder again! The second night I had lemon lime bitters. For a full price will I come? I could, since all tapas in Melbourne is that priced. But if a voucher, yes will come back definitely!
Love this restaurant. Have been numerous times and still
Can't get enough. Food is amazing and staff are wonderful. Love the tapas. Paellas are just to die for.
We had a sensational dinner last night! We had the $45 banquet and were very impressed with the food. Flavours were amazing. To top it off the staff were friendly and seemed organised. Bravo! We'll be coming back!
Donnali919
In total it is good, however the seafood is not fresh enough except muscles. The bread with Olivia oil is good. A little bit disappointed for me as I drive nearly fifty minutes to get there.
Anthony
Was waiting for to try this place for years and hyped it up in my head looking at all the reviews and food pics.
Finally went on a Sunday and the staff recommend doing the buffet which was good value for money and so damn delicious.
Nicole Kingsford
Went there for dinner Saturday night around 8pm. While the very young wait staff were lovely, they were very stressed. It became clear why when we got told there might be an hour wait for food when we went to order. There were a few tables of unhappy people, including one very vocal table who had been waiting for paella for an hour and a half (depending on what they ordered, wait time should've been 30 - 55 mins according to the menu). We didn't wait long, but only ordered tapas. We started with dip (they'd run out of tortilla chips so couldn't get our other option). The dip was delicious. Sadly it went downhill from there. It was partly our fault for not ordering enough variety of dishes, but everything was overly salty and oily and by the last dishes, just tasted like oil that needed to be changed. It might have been just a bad night, but we won't be back.
Split The Bill
Saw a deal on Living Social for $40 for 2 people at El Burro Tapas so booked ourselves in for dinner.
The tapas was ridiculously overpriced so thankful I had a voucher and service wasn't the best in explaining how tapas works. Extremely disappointed as a serve is a serve eg. You order Gamba ~ tiger prawn skewer and you literally receive one prawn on a skewer for $4.5 😤 took us awhile to grasp the concept as we were receiving mixed messages from the waiter and probably because we are used to receiving tapas dishes to share when ordering at most Spanish places + the voucher indicated experience for two so you would assume it's sharing dishes.
The mushrooms and scallops had lovely flavours, paella was reasonable in flavours. Overall experience was disheartening as I was expecting a lot more considering I have been to many tapas restaurants. Thankfully I didn't pay the full amount of what it would have costed me as I would have been furious.
Sangria was nice, served in a jug so got value for money.
Def not in a rush in revisiting as my idea of tapas is sharing dishes not sharing a chicken wing between two people or ordering two as a serve.
Left with a bitter taste in all honestly and didn't enjoy the full experience as I would have liked to. 😐
MG
Andrea
Good service. We ordered the Graze banquet for two people. So. Much. Food. A couple of things aranchini balls and chicken wings weren't the greatest. Everything else was amazing. Platter to start with had an awesome eggplant dip. Prawns were really good. Calamari was awesome and the spicy meatballs were great. Would recommend it as a place to eat. Looking for a big meal and great food place to be. I did get a bit of food envy with the seafood paella. Next time...
Anthia Mirawidya
We are here for wed night for the 20% off paella- but that tasted like tomato rice, not one bit Spanish. Is it because it's 20% so they let go on the flavours?
We Nomz
You know that feeling after you've eaten a good meal and you're already thinking of the next date to come back and eat it again.. this is it.. we ordered the meatball, scallop and pork belly tapas.. they were great little starters, tasty and delightful! would recommend the pork belly! crunchy crackling, moist and tender meat, well cooked. The Mariscos paella was divine.. flavorful and had to be one of the best paella I have eaten by far.. the staff did advise us that it would take some waiting time for the paella.. well.. it was worth the wait..would definitely be back! Also in love with their pretty colorful plates and bowl!
Dan
Mid week dinner, always very nice food and atmosphere is great. Wednesday night 20% off some dishes is great. Been here a few times. Paella is the best
