Given that the sun was out and I hadn’t been down to Williamstown for a while I thought we would go down and give it a go. Having walked around the harbour area “off the pier” looked like the only stand alone fish & chips shop open, so we thought we would give it a go. As my Dad said later it was the best decision I had made during his stay here. We both had fish & chips and were amazed by the appearance and quality of the food. The fish tasted as though it had only been caught earlier in the day. The drinks were reasonably priced at $3.50, the service was great and came with a lovely smile. On our return, I told the wife we will be going to Willi… before the Winter sets so I can have another portion of the best fish & chips, even if it is 30 kilometres away.
This place has got to be the best fish & chip shop in the whole of Victoria.

Best fish and chips I've ever had! Not oily and you couldn't taste the oil. Chips weren't dry and the fish tasted really fresh. I'd definitely go again and would recommend this awesome fish and chipper to anyone!!
Absolutely delicious fish and chips. The Ferry special is great value and the chips are sublime. The staff are incredibly helpful and run a fantastic fish and chippery. Definitely worth a return visit!
You want quality fish and chips? Come here and have the best! I had the gummy shark flake “grilled”with potato cake, chips and Greek salad. Food was tasty, grilled and fried to perfection. Salad was fresh, crisp and refreshing. Good friendly service topped off a great casual feed! We sat in the back tented outdoor area sheltering from one of Melbourne’s renowned downpours after a warm summer’s day! A great relaxed vibe by the bay! �

Not the cheapest fish & chip place but the food is beautiful. My daughter and I had grilled barramundi and it was flavoursome and fresh. Grandson had a kids pack with fish bites and devoured it all. Amazing chips that are not greasy. Will definitely be back. �

Been here almost 4yrs and been to Williamstown so many times. Last night was the first I've tried this place. Best fish I've had since being here. The staff have such great service building a awesome welcoming atmosphere. Def going back!!!
Everything we had was delicious! Fish melted in your mouth as did the scallops. The batter was crisp however light and not heavy. We will be back again.:-)

Had the 6 calamari with chips. Great portion size. We were probably one of the first customers and the oil being fresher and the chips tasted better. I loved the calamari, texture was perfect, cooked just nicely and not covered with batter.

Good fish and chips right on the pier in Williamstown. The fish is always fresh and not covered in flour when grilled. Fried food is usually light and nicely crisp also. Although not sure what happened to my calamari this time, hopefully a once off.

Impressed with the large scallops, calamari rings - so-so, and fish was pretty good. Batter was quite rich, and size of fish was decent - so what I had (1 fish, 3 scallops and 3 calamari rings) would be enough to satisfy 2 people without feeling overwhelmed. Salad and grilled seafood option available - just ask the friendly staff. If I were to make a recommendation, I would personally like to see sweet potato chips on the menu. Overall, I was satisfied.
Just off the Gem Pier/Syme Street is this fish and chippery place. We got the fisherman's basket and we're pretty happy with what we got, fresh seafood in a crispy batter and crunchy delicious chips. Winner!

That was my first time for fish & chips. I like it so much. Grilled and fried both, fried personally more (first time). The owner were also so kind and friendly. We as a group of 4 were very impressed we will miss it! (2 not in Australia).
Just had lunch here and it was a great experience. The fishes were awesome thanks to the delicious batter and the chips werent that bad either. The location is also great near the pier and with a good weather it made the experience even better. For some reason they didnt provide plates or boxes, so we needed to just unwrap and eat.
One of the best fish and chips places in Melbourne, slightly better than Hunky Dory in our opinion. We tried the fishermen basket and were very happy. Eveything were delicious and light. Chips were crunchy, scallops and prawns were fresh and fried perfectly.

My friend and I decided on a spontaneous Williamstown visit, having not been to that side of the city for years and years. As soon as we walked down to the pier the amazing smell of 'off the pier' captured our senses and we just simply had to order something from there for lunch! The service was attentive and friendly, Tina the owner is fabulous and even gave us some tips about where to visit in the area. The food of course was a delight, humble no frills fish and chips packed with tons of flavour, no wankey kale salads here (not that there's anything wrong with that), just good honest food. Really enjoyed this cute little gem and will definitely visit again when back in the area.

The best fish and chips I've had for a long time eaten on a picnic blanket by the foreshore at Williamstown with friends. A bonus was the yacht club open day so a few people got to sail as well.
Without a doubt the best fish and chips in Williamstown. The flake tasted fresh, delicious and not at all oily (unlike many other places) and the chips were light and crispy. Service was fast and the workers kind and friendly. I would (and do) recommend it to everyone sick of soggy, oily fish and chips and wanting something more. It alone is worth the trip to Williamstown!

Before arriving to Williamstown, i had read alot of good reviews about this place. So with my big family of 6 kids under 12 yrs, i wanted to order enough for us but also not overly expensive. We purchased a family pack and we substituted the drinks for other food. The fish was beautiful and the batter was nice and thin and crispy. The chips were golden and crunchy but could do with a bit more salt. They gave us a generous amount of chips cause it feed my family and still had leftovers. Very friendly people and great service, would definitely be back ☺

Best Chips Williamstown 2015: okay, that's a big call given how other people rate their favorite chippy; but that's how we felt after finally trying Off the Pier.When it's a long weekend Williamstown is usually quiet because the tourists have headed out of town. Most other places in Melbourne you can drive through; Williamstown, you have to drive to. Or live here for over 20 years like us. We had been avoiding this address for fish and chips because previous owners had made such an awful job of one of our favorites. So we've been driving to places like Port Melbourne, South Melbourne, Albert Park (not as good as it used to be), Gardenvale (good choice from two stores), Brighton (pricey), and even Parkdale (they've gone downhill) for a feed of fish and a serve of chips. Then I read a few good reviews here about Off the Pier; and a re-union group of media people (I belong to) that came to Williamstown gave it their endorsement, so today we gave it a go. And we were highly impressed.We often eat earlier than many folk. Our order went in before midday and we got a seat outside in the winter sun easily, as there were only about three other patrons being looked after by four or five staff. Our order was simple: an 'Off the Boat' (a serve of fish of the day and chips) and an extra piece of gummy flake. Choice of fish of the day was either gummy shark (flake) or blue grenadier; I got the gummy because my wife is not fond of blue grenadier.A young man brought our meal to us wrapped in coated white paper. I was immediately impressed by the serving size. On unwrapping we spotted three pieces of fish among the very generous serve of chips, and three small pieces of lemon.For me fresh cooked fish needs just two things: a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon. As anyone from Melbourne who has ever tried really fresh gummy shark (flake) should be able to tell you: lemon is optional with gummy shark because it is so sweet. And that's how our flake came, beautifully sweet and moist in a light coating of batter.Whoever prepared the flake had a good eye and a deft hand as all the pieces were roughly the same size and what I consider a good shape. Sometimes you'll get flake cut really thin so it cooks quickly but it loses flavor. The way these pieces were cut retained that lovely flavor of fresh flake. These were cut long and more rounded in shape than thin (if you're ever near Lang Lang it's worth leaving the highway and travelling up to the town for flake because the gummy shark is freshly caught nearby and sets a benchmark for deep fried flake). Maybe the pieces were a little on the small size, but we had ordered two pieces and got three pieces. So we were very satisfied with the serving size of the fish and of the chips.Chips were crisp on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside and neither too small nor too big (I prefer fat chips with gravy): lovely when fresh and hot. The oil that had been used to cook them in was obviously very clean, so the chips tasted great. Because of the sizes and shapes of the chips you could tell they were cut from spuds and not reconstituted potato like some vendors I know!We were pleasantly surprised on how good the meal was given the reputation Williamstown has earned for some below average eateries. Now we won't have to travel so far for a great fish and chip meal.20150606

The BEST fish!! Come here regularly for the gummy shark. I have it grilled he has it fried. So soft, tasty just melts in your mouth. Chips are great too! Gets crowded but the kitchen handles the crowds with ease! 10/10
Fresh is Best!. My husband and I had lunch here today, and we're thrilled to bits! Firstly the staff are all friendly, and knowledgable , and the premises spotless! Nice casual vibe and extremely busy, the little courtyards are a great spot to sit. The food is outstanding!! My husband ordered the Fishermans Basket, and I had the special, fresh gummy and chips, with 2scallops. Superbly fresh seafood, light and crispy batter, and not a grease spot in sight! Would love this to be my local! Highly recommend !!!

Amazing fish & chips. I have never really liked fish or any type of seafood because it's either too fatty or not cooked right. Best Service & Fish N CHips In All the World!. First time food blogger so I must be impressed with this place which is loved, owned and run by Tina and Steve. I have many food allergies so am very selective with where I choose to eat. They even use Cotton Oil which I understand is Gluten free! Yah!!! So trust me the food is absolutely beautiful here, fresh and served with the biggest heartfelt smile and care. Best Fish and Chippery in Victoria. I have a lot of fish and chips over my time, but this place in the heart of williamstown set along the pier is the cream of the crop. I ordered the fisherman's basket to get a bit of everything. Each element of the meal was simply amazing. Everything including the prawns, scallops, calamari, flake and chips were cooked to perfection. Another positive was the fact that i still felt light after eating the food rather then heavy and sick which a lot of fish shops can leave you feeling. It comes down to the oil they use that leads to that light crisp flavours and a positive feeling upon completion of the meal. The service from the new owners was terrific, extremely receptive and friendly. This place is a great improvement from the previous town fryer and will soon gain exclusive status if they keep up this great work.
