Review Fong's Kitchen - Williamstown

Karen Burns
Really great, honest Vietnamese & Asian food. Fong and her family make a great variety of your all time favourites including BBQ pork, salt and pepper calamari, vietnamese spring rolls, fried rice, pho and lots more. Eat in, take away and home delivery have all worked really well for us.

We love Aunty Fong's restaurant, great service, awesome food, and it's where all the locals love to eat. My husband and I go here every Friday night to unwind from a big week at work and relax with a glass of wine and enjoy their company and eat some very delicious food.

My absolute FAVOURITE place to eat. Best Peeking Duck dish and never once disappointed when ordering from here. Been a regular for 10 years.

Good old school 80s special fried rice. And surprisingly really friendly service. N

Friendly, fast service. Dumpling were fantastic. Pho was excellent too, came with all the condiments and dipping sauce. Extremely well priced. Will definitely be back.

Today (2/1/21) we came this area looking for a Chinese restaurant; that we use to bring our son to when he was a young toddler. In stead we found a totally different place, yep Fong’s kitchen. You guys need to come here. SERIOUSLY I MEAN IT. The staff are so nice 🥰 and the food 🤤🤤 is the bomb. So come Melbourne come and eat here we did .... and we drove from Geelong 🥰 thanks you so much for the delicious food 🥘 can’t wait to come back and eat with you guys again 🥰

Lucky for me . . . there is a very good Asian restaurant in Williamstown - good menu choice, great value, prompt delivery (always fast), service - all excellent. The best thing to me - all ingredients are so, so fresh, and it's all piping hot every time they deliver - with everything that could spill taken care of! Thanks Fong's Kitchen. I have gone there many times to eat pre-covid and all of the above applies. However never found takeaway satisfactory. Now they've nailed it - well done!

This restaurant is now doubt one of the top ten I have ever eaten at. The food was fresh, lush, delicious, well presented and made with love. Jason, his wife and mother all add their touch to the food. It's a fusion of Vietnamese, Malaysian and Chinese. We'll be back regularly.

Had lunch here with my family on a Sunday, the restaurant is quite small but cosy and the staff are friendly. We shared dumplings, dim sims, spring rolls for entrees and for mains we had Kung Po Beef, Lemon Chicken, Chili Prawns. All delicious and good sized portions.

Ordered a take away pho to try ward off a cold. It came with broth and ingredients separate which was very much appreciated. No it's not amazing as what you can get from Footscray but it's a very decent serve and very tasty. The beef was tender and beef balls flavoursome. Only thing missing were some herbs, chili and lemon to add in.

3.5

The cold makes me crave hot soup and comfort food so it was a no brainer that I instinctively wanted Malaysian food for dinner. Having walked past Fong's Kitchen numerous times while at Williamstown, I took this opportunity to finally try them out. While most places were quiet, Fong's Kitchen was packed with diners and I took this as a good sign.

We started off with the Prawn Sesame Toast, and this was one of the better ones that we had eaten, even better than those from a lot of yum cha joints. Excellent ratio of prawns to bread, and very crispy yet retaining a delicate texture.

The broth of the Ipoh Hor Fun was just what I needed to warm myself up. It was lacking a depth of flavour, but it did its job. The thin flat rice noodles were accompanied by a very generous serve of chicken, and juicy prawns, making this a very filling dish.

The stir-fried chicken was sadly on the dry side, but it was very well-seasoned and the egg floss added an element of texture and flavour.

The service was warm and unpretentious, and there was a genuinely homely vibe to the place. There are not many options for Malaysian cuisine in this part of town, so I do hope Fong's Kitchen is here to stay.

Random find! Delicious food, good service and comfortable seats 😄 It wasn't too crowded during dinner time. Would love to come back when I'm in the area!

My husband and I used to frequent this place in the past as the food way truly delicious and of high quality. Unfortunately tonight it was not the case. The food lacked flavour and the items we chose weren’t well cooked (crispy chicken, crispy beef, calamari, sesame prawn). I hope they can up the ante and get back to the awesome restaurant they once were

Service is good but not authentic and quite small serve...chicken rice is served with butter flavor rice which is not supposed to cook with butter..

Staff are super friendly. Food is beautiful & fresh. I had pork spring rolls, which were heaven with every bite. The nught soup special of sliced beef pho, which i loved. Will definetly return :)
Steph
It was a 40 minute wait for food. The pawn crackers were stale. Wonton soup was tasteless. Our rice paper rolls were falling a part and chicken was over cooked.

Six people here and been here 30 minutes waiting for Pho and dumplings. 7 orders takeaway gone out. Look after your dine in guests please. Thanks for the offer of free drinks

At the time of writing this brief review Fing's average rating was 3.7.
Based on what I ate tonight for my first visit, I'm going to agree with that.

Although the ingredients in the Pork Vietnamese Spring Rolls were supremely fresh, with perfect crisp lettuce cups, they were disappointingly bland. The primary flavour coming through was just the pastry itself.
My second course was their Chicken & Corn soup.
Similarly very freshly made, but lacking in any good flavours, yet better than the spring rolls.
I cannot fault the service, it was great.

It was decent enough to warrant a return trip, but will try other dishes on their menu, in the hope that I just made poor choices with my first time here.

Been here quite a few times, usually quite impressed with the food. However, this time the food was a little disappointing. The sizzling noodle was on the bland side even though it was sweet enough. The service was really slow even with 70% of the tables empty. Hopefully they’ll improve their service and food!

Great family run restaurant that has very attentive service & authentic Malaysian Chinese food. Our family stumbled upon this restaurant after our child's late optometrist appointment. Great find in the heart of Williamstown. Next time we're around the area, we know we do not have to stick to just fish n chips.

Absolutely loved the wonton noodles. The noodles were cooked spot on - just al dente. Maybe boiled wontons and a touch less oil on the dressing of the noodles would have made it better but that's just our personal preference.

Sizzling minced pork with tofu was soooo good! We would definitely be back for more of this dish! Prices are reasonable. The bowl of rice was very generous! The lady boss was also very attentive and brought our little boy his own plastic cutleries and a little treat of prawn crackers.

Found this gem in Williamstown. Great location, recommend for lunch. Don't judge by the facade, friendly service and great flavoursome food.

Such a lovely family-run place - we rarely go a fortnight without a night at Fong's. Always fresh and reliable, with service so good we let the lads order for us as often as not.

The restaurant decor didn't give me too much confidence, but man I was blown away by this family run establishment. At first I got slightly confused with the type of cuisine Fong's Kitchen had to offer. There's a strong vietnamese/chinese presence on the menu, supported by some other popular asian dishes. We opted for some malaysian that day and went for the eggplant curry and the wonton noodles. We were very impressed! The curry tasted authentic accompanied by generous amount of crispy fried eggplant. The wonton noodles came with slices BBQ pork and fried pork wonton, the noodles were cooked to perfection drizzled with sweet soy sauce. Don't forget to ask for the chilli oil, it's super delicious and adds extra punch to your already awesome food!

Overall, we absolutely loved the food and the service. We'll definitely come back to try more dishes from the menu. Well done team :)

This is a place you are treated well, family business, food is always made fresh with fresh produce.
Service is lovely. If you enjoy good food, variety, friendly atmosphere then please try you won't be disappointed. We are now regulars and take family and friends often who can't believe they hadn't been sooner.

Beautiful food, great service. Every dish we've tried has been cooked perfectly, loads of flavour, fresh & colourful. A hidden gem in Willy!

Fong's is a regular family food stop for us. Everyone can find some thing on the chinese, malaysian and vietnamese inspired menu. Try the pan fried dumplings and satays. This is an unpretentious dining experience with warm and attentive staff that feel just like family too.

I actually don't feel good writing this as the staff were very friendly....but the food was that bad i had to give this place a mention...Possibly the worst food i have eaten in an Asian Restaurant.
Sarah Cutajar
The best prawn spring rolls. A must try.
This place has a lovely atmosphere not too busy or loud but awesome food! Food is served in a very timely manner which is handy and very child friendly.

Dreadful.. My family, friends and I all adored Tai Hoong, with years of amazing meals they never faltered. I returned to Williamstown after living elsewhere for a couple of years to see Fong's Kitchen. Another local reassured me that much of the menu remained the same and that the Tai Hoong quality was still there.
Recently I ordered two meals to take away that were so repulsive I actually couldn't eat them. I ordered a bean curd and vegetable stir fry and received a box of watery, clouded, tasteless liquid with the wrong end of some book choy floating in it. It was just awful and I'm really sad. :( I loved Tai Hoong and it's such a shame.
I hope it was just an off night.

Hidden gem! Fresh, delicious and cheap Asian. Awesome food and so unbelievably well priced. Really good selection of dishes on the menu and all came out hot, fresh and so tasty. The chicken satays are a stand out but the laksa, crispy chicken and calamari are excellent too. Service is super attentive and friendly. Real winner.

Fricken awesome! Amazing food, fresh and tasty. Cheap and allergy friendly. Cannot fault this place.

Good overall experience. Went there with my girlfriend last night, ordered a variety of dishes all of which proved to be very tasty with the exception of the wonton soup, which was bland and flavourless - when I mentioned this to the man at the counter he immediately took it off the bill, saying that the wonton soup was usually much loved and that he would find out what went wrong and in the meantime it was unacceptable that I pay for a disappointing dish.

Ordered half a duck, dumplings, barbequed pork, sizzling chicken hot plate, all of which were very tasty (especially the chicken). Staff were polite and helpful, food was good, very happy.

Wonderful surprise. On a whim we stopped and had a number of entree's and main meals to share between 4 of us, what a delight fresh authentic flavours, beautiful flaky roti, great service at a great price an absolute brilliant little find we will return

Had a great first time meal here last night. Eight of us shared many dishes and all of them were very tasty. No complaints. Staff very friendly and food was delivered in a timely manner. We will definitely return. Definitely.

Valentine's day dinner. Went to Fong's kitchen tonight and was totally blown away! A friend recommended it to us last night so we decided to give it a go. Jason ever soo friendly and were able to accommodate us as my husband has peanut and egg allergy. No frills menu just fresh hot tasty Malaysia food cooked by mum traditional style. Very cheap and will definitely be back!!

My disappointment. I planed to go out for dinner to Fongs so a booked a table for 8. We travelled all the way from Port Melbourne to discover it was closed.

Delicious. I enjoy most Asian cuisines & I tend to have high expectations when eating out. Fongs food & service is always sensational. I have eaten there several times with work colleagues & they never disappoint.! Food is always fresh & flavours spot on. I love their food so much they catered for my party recently & everyone raved about the delicious noodles & dumplings.

Their crispy fried chicken is good. My partner ordered their Ipoh hot fun and he likes it. We both liked their curry puff which is the best we have eaten in Melbourne.

Fresh and delicious. Thankyou so much what an incredible bday dinner for my 86 year old mum who loves Asian cuisine. Her Lemon chicken the best she's ever had, and shes had quite a few!!! my hainanese chicken so fresh and mouth watering and the beef roti just beautiful. Even the house sav blanc spot on! Cannot fault anything just can't wait to return, Thankyou for your lovely service and truly amazing food.

Great roti. So-so laksa. Lovely people.

The dream is over. The dims sims have gone further away from the original recipe that the previous owners had passed on... unfortunately they are quite ordinary now.

Food, Atmosphere and Service - very happy!. We took over Fong's tonight with a group of 38 people! Justin and the team did a such brilliant job serving so many people in the restaurant whilst they maintained their famous Take-Away service. The food was so fresh and the servings generous. We couldn't be happier with our evening at Fong's and would recommend for small or up to a group of our size. We'll be back for sure.

Great food at a great price, have tried something different for the last 5 weeks and all have been tops
Really good Luksa

Disgusting food, slow service and no eftpos. Avoid this restaurant at all costs. Previously eaten here, was OK, went for takeaway tonight - they have been closed the last two days. We were told the food would take 15 minutes, ended up taking over 40 minutes and then was told they do not have eftpos tonight (they previously had it), so had to go and get cash. The food was cold and foul by the time we got it, half the size it previously was and smelt like dirty water.

This is a shame as we are locals and have been here numerous times before, we will never go back and will be advising our local friends not to go.

Best Malaysian in Melbourne!. Tasty dishes, amazing location and friendly staff! The prefect combination. They grow fresh produce on site. The flavours are amazing and so is the price! It's so cheap! It's also great they have a section on the menu that carries on the dishes from the original resturant, that was established in 1952! Highly recommended, a new Williamstown institution.

Best restaurant in Williamstown!. We have eaten at Fong's Kitchen numerous times and absolutely love this restaurant. From the superb service to the deliciously authentic food - you can't beat Fong's Kitchen for value, experience and delicious cuisine.

We have traveled around the world and wanted to taste the same Peking duck which we ate in England. We visited Fongs kitchen in Williamson last night and discussed with the floor manager Jason how we would like the duck cooked. It was the best we've had in Australia to date. The duck was crispy and even went to the trouble of producing 3 different plum sauces to suit our liking. All in all they could not have been more accommodating. Try it you won't be disappointed. 5stars.
Thanks again Jason!

Delicious Food. Had a quiet night with no kids so thought we would step out and try Fong's Kitchen after hearing that there were new owners. The place has been renovated and the atmosphere was great. Very stylish and welcoming decor. When the menu arrived we noted that the dishes were very cheap and we expected a small serve. We were pleasantly surprised when the mains arrived as they were quite substantial. We had the char kway teow and the hor fun noodles with chicken. The char kway teow was delicious, but the hor fun was spectacular. The thick flavoursome gravy was a highlight. Amazing value for the price.
The service was very friendly and our waiter Jason made us feel right at home.
Tip: If you like a bit of spice, ask for some of their home made sambal on the side. It packs quite a punch and goes very well with the ice cold beer.
Overall it was a great night out and this place will become one of our regulars.

Delicious and authentic food. Staff and owner are friendly with modern and stylish decor. Cannot fault this family run business. Must try are the Chinese Spring Rolls that are a fixture at this Nelson Place location for 30+ years. A Williamstown gem.

Yum!. Loved the chicken curry with roti - but all dishes were great.... nothing left on our plates! :)

This restaurant got off to a great start (I scanned and uploaded the original menus) but we haven't been back in 2015 because we had a couple of very ordinary meals in late 2014.

Unpretentious food from a restaurant kitchen with amazing views across Commonwealth Reserve.
The food was delicious and our two children were met by staff with ease.
We will be back.
