Review Wild Rice - Williamstown

Samantha Whitter
My partner and I have dined here multiple times and are never disappointed. Beautiful tasty food and very reasonable prices. The 1st time we went here was after a trip to Asia where we fell in love with the food. There are a lot of restaurants in Melbourne that serve Asian food that is nothing like you get overseas. With Wild Rice we found a place where they serve food that really is as tasty as we found overseas. My partner loves the Tom Yum soup (approx $8) with seafood and I love the Coconut prawn ($14.50 for 5 prawns) for starters. The Tom Yum was very tasty and the prawns were nice and light. For main course my partner had a red beef curry ($16) with roti ($4) that had great flavour and I had a calamari salad ($16) that was light and tasty. For dessert I had the wild coconut rice with egg custard ($7) and this is probably up there as my favourite dessert of all time. It was so good that the next few days I was still thinking about it and wondering when I could have it again. There are a good choice of beers, wines and spirits. You can also BYO wine which is great. The staff are always very attentive and we never come away disappointed. We have had takeaway (I love the wild coconut rice dessert so much there have been a few times when I have just ordered multiple servings of just this) and I have also been for lunch a few times where they have lunch specials that range in price from $11-$15 dollars. Highly recommend and definitely one of my fave spots to eat in Williamstown

I took my girlfriend here on a date..... Big mistake. The atmosphere was very pleasant. But my chicken skewers came out raw. So the server took them back (without apologizing). Then brought the food out, the chicken was raw again. So I didn't eat it. I never seen a manager come out or even ask if everything was alright. Like seriously?? If I'm paying 50$ a plate for two I expect a little empathy and compassion from the management. Then I hinted and mentioned this to the cashier. Still no action or sincere apology. I am very upset at my experience and will not be returning. I do not recommend this place at all. Instead I will go next door to "Wok Right in" or just anywhere else.

Ordered a takeaway meal. Got home and realised they forgot the peanut sauce for the roti bread. Called them and they said they we too understaffed to deliver so we had to drive back to pick it up and a partial refund was offered. When we got back home to are now kinda cold food, opened the cashew and veg stir fry to find that there was no cashews in it. Stir fry was average, as was the other meal.

Received entree being curry puffs with peanut sauce. Peanut sauce had 2 hairs sticking out! We complained to waitress and showed her the hairs in the sauce, she apologised and brought a new peanut sauce. Impossible to believe this but its true - received main (chicken stir fry with cashews) and hair sticking out of meal! We walked plate to counter and showed them, told them it was disgusting and walked out. Accidents can happen but for BOTH MEALS to have hair (looked like animal or pubic hair!) is not an accident and there is a serious issue here . All the above aside, the worst part of all (if there can be a worse part) is the staff DID NOT GIVE A STUFF!

My wife and I really liked this place. Great spring rolls, pad Thai and my red curry was lovely although too mild. Nice atmosphere and good service. Will definitely go back to try other offerings.

A night out with the girls should not see 3 of the 8 of us soooo sick for soooo long (3 weeks unable to work due to the effects of the poison in our bodies) with pathology confirmed Campylobacter bacterial infection contracted from the contaminated food we ate at this restaurant. The Hobson's Bay City Council Health Department were of no assistance at all. They showed no concern regarding how sick we were from eating at this restaurant. BE WARNED! This restaurant has other bad reviews regarding raw chicken being served. Raw chicken, is one of the ways that the very nasty bacteria can be spread, that and poor hygiene via fecal matter and unclean environments. Sure the food tasted ok, but to think the extreame cost financially and physically that we went through, never will I return to this so called restaurant, never will I stop telling everyone to be very careful eating there. It is worth noting that in any other state of the country we would have been able to sue for damages! Not in Victoria though. To be able to sue for being poisoned, you must have been on life support to have a case. Pure insanity. There appears to be no such thing as Public Liability in the state of Victoria. Eat at your own risk.

Service was really good however the food was pretty terrible. Had penang curry, coconut rice and roti bread. It is a shame because the restaurant looks nice so it definitely has potential, maybe they need a better chef.

Loved this place. Don't know why it is not more popular. Great menu and food. Friendly staff good drinks list. If you are in Willie it's worth an eat.

Unfortunately this food was not great. The staff were really lovely and the coconut drink was yummy but the roti was chewy and dry, and we ordered three main dishes between us and none of them were good. The chicken salad was over cooked dry chicken with no flavour, the duck salad was too sour with no spice, and the pad see ew was fine but really boring. Quite disappointing.

Fresh food in a great location. The wait staff are friendly. And found it a very relaxed restaurant. Also do takeaway which is a great option.

Loved it... Great food and service. Even my fussy children enjoyed the food. Been a few times now and will definitely go back. Prices are very reasonable.

I've eaten here many, many times. The food is always yummy. Whether you decide to eat in or take away it always tastes delicious. Papaya salad (especially lao style) is an all time favourite!

We have been eating at Wild Rice since they opened over 10 years ago. The food has always been great and very reasonably priced. Coconut prawns are a must.
Love this place. My fussy kids love it too. Favourites are roti rolls, mussamun curry, green curry, pad see ew, rice paper rolls and the tom yum. We keep going back to this place.
The service is great and didn't have to wait too long for service. Thai is not my favourite asian cuisine, I rate this place above average, but there is room for improvement. When it's busy it can get noisy, so sometimes best to just get takeaway instead. 3.5 stars

Ordered some take away and unfortunately I did not enjoy the food. Staff were helpful, however not knowledgeable of menu. Ordered a red curry which was edible but not enjoyable.

Overpriced! Lots of room and friendly staff. I didn't find the food to be amazing compared to my experience with a myriad of other Thai restaurants. A little bland. It's always a little disapointing when you ask for a spicy, hot curry and get something that is mild. Trust me I can handle the heat!

Nice enough place, and good was OK, but I would say it's slightly overpriced for what you get.

There was a strange dog smell whilst we were eating our dinner.

We asked to take a doggy bag, but we weren't allowed.

Nasty, bland Thai food, coconut rice was yellow and hard and we couldnt eat more than a few mputhfulls. much better to make the drive to Fresh Chilli in Laverton for some amazing food.

Not too squashy. We have eaten at wild rice many times. The food is always nice however I find it a little pricey for what you get and compared to other Thai restaurants around the area. The good thing about this restaurant is it's not as squashy as many, but personally I have been to cheaper thai restaurants with equivalent tasting meals and quality.

Great local Thai. Been to Wild Rice three times now and always happy with the food and service for the price range. Especially enjoyed the calamari salad and minced chicken salad - both nice and clean. Dishes are Aussie hot not Thai hot so order accordingly. Look forward to going back again.

Love Wild Rice. We regularly get take away from Wild Rice & the food is always good.
We've eaten in a few times as well & the service is always great, the food comes out quickly & is delicious.
Bring back the corn fritters!!!

We have been going to Wild Rice for over 6 years now and still the food and service as good and reliable as ever. A favourite amongst the locals.

One of the worst Thai restaurants I have ever been too. Ordered the roti bread for entree and the peanut sauce was terrible. Then when mains came out I saw the waiter heat up out red curry in the MICROWAVE!! After eating the terrible yellow coconut rice I was told I wasn't allowed to say anything so I had to endure waitress slapdown the eftpos machine in front of us and manage a thanks with so much attitude it made us feel like we had made the bad food! Never going back waste of money!

Delicious!!!!!. We were a party of 4 and none of us left disappointed! It was sensational, including the service, cant wait to go back!

Best restaurant in Williamstown by far! Also very affordable and lovely staff, love it!

Forget this place - Bad Experience !!!. We recently ordered take out from Wild Rice in Williamstown - having done so a year ago - it was a disappointing experience and begs the question has the restaurant changed hands??
The rice was reheated - and hard - had a "stale" taste !!!
Curry chicken - the curry was sitting on the outside of the chicken - so had a "green tinge" and not at all flavour some !!!
Pad See Ewe - left little to the imagination
Suggest that you think twice before visiting this restaurant as there are many other Thai Options in the area that offer more authentic and tasty Thai food that doesn't require it to be placed in the bin !!!

Not the best Thai in town. Thought we would give this Thai restaurant a go after a friends recommendation but can say it is nowhere near as good as the Thai around the corner! The spring rolls were lovely but the curries lacked flavour. The waiter was attentive but it was a tad dissappointing for the tastebuds.

To d.a.g I tried Yim Yam in Yarraville, I was impressed with the quick service but to be honest, the red curry had too much coconut milk and having cherry tomato in it not a good idea . The stir fry was very sweet. Not the best Thai around. In Williamstown I will definitely recommend Siam kitchen on Melbourne rd.

Lovely!. The staff are very friendly and the service was efficient yet personable. it was my first time there and i will definitely return. there is a good vegetarian selection and everything i ate was delicious. my omnivore dining companion was similarly impressed!

A very western view of Thai food. Too expensive for what it intends to be. Ok for a last thought for when you don't want to cook midweek. I won't go back.

Not going back. A disappointment on this visit. The spring rolls not value for money 8.50 for 4 tiny overfried sticks. The Pad Thai was bland, the noodles were not cooked well and had a monochrome flavour and sweet. The chicken stirfry was watery and tasteless. The mushrooms were wrinkly maybe an indication they were a bit old. The service was very bubbly by all the staff and it was very busy.

Went there for a 40th; Nice food for a banquet although didn't think it was worth $50 per head still felt hungry by the end of the night. Nice atmosphere and friendly service. May have been different dining experience if I wasn't there for a birthday

I am amazed this restaurant has been reviewed poorly. I have eaten mainly takeaway for 5 years and their food is so tasty. I have travelled throughout Asia including Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam many times and I think this restaurant compares well. The restaurant is always busy and i think is one of best restaurants in Williamstown.

Great food Fantastic service. I've been eating at wild rice for years. The food is always excellent. it's clearly that the comment above is just another hater. Chicken breast is used in stir-fried and all other dishes. They only use chicken tights in Musman curry. I was informed that this curry takes long to cook so chicken breast would be too dry. I personally don't like chicken tight at all but i didn't mind it in this yummy curry.

I had dinner at Yim Yam once, the food was far too sweet for thai cuisine. The service was very poor. The good thing about this place is that the price was very cheap.

Thai food for people that don't want the authenticity. A very westernized example. Plenty of better options about.
