Review The Stags Head Hotel - Williamstown

A pleasant and laid back local pub with good food and flowing beer. Service was quick and friendly. Can't ask for much more than that. Will certainly visit again.

Stags Hotel have got a new menu… tried out the curried prawns. Absolutely beautiful. Well done to the Stags team.
Peter Morrison
A friendly classic pub to kick back and enjoy some great live music!

Only a tourists review but was fantastic if U r after a ye Olde pub .. it's amongst houses/residential .. no businesses/commercial around. Just the pub & mostly untouched .. the rounded doors are just that : adoorable .. Declan behind the bar was great & chatting to the friendly locals was a highlight while the elbows were on the bar. Will return for a meal before we leave. Please don't kill the old spirit & proudly say U refurbed it like so many modernised pubs. Cos this beautiful old stag still has so much appeal

Undoubtedly the best pub feed in Willy. Great service and grouse food to match. The carbonara is a must get

There is room for improvement. I would say the food was average, needs something like extra flavour in certain dishes. The place generally needs a bit of attendance.

I ordered the Parma and was very pleased with the Napoli sauce and stringy cheese on the succulent chicken. The chips that came on the side were a massive let down however, being soggy and undercooked. Overall it was a great meal for $15 though and the staff were friendly and quick.

Went to Stag's Head Hotel for dinner after the dog beach with my friends and it was a fantastic dinner, the food was DELICIOUS. Dine-in hospitality has just started up again post-lockdown and I was extremely happy to see bright and happy faces, great service and no-giving-up attitude. The staff were even super friendly to my quite obnoxious dogs... We will be back! P.S inside and toilets was super nice and clean which is important to me! Loved it

Great food and friendly staff. Nice place to come for a family dinner or a drink with the boys. Good price.

Sunday lunch with the family. The courtyard is lovely and sunny. The food was Amazing. Everything was fresh and flavourful. Wether you like steak or seafood. There's something for everyone. Best in the west. By far. Keep up the good work.

Great place to enjoy a night of dinner and music, with bands playing Saturday's and Sundays, and of course the "Open mic" night run by Ron Wenzler!
Gianni Basiaco
Great place to eat drink n relax, great staff n venue

The most beautifully unchanged corner pub in Melbourne. Away from the glitzy restaurants with fireplace and a great pub menu, real front bar, summer beer garden and music in the corner most nights. Friday evening games and raffles make it homey and habitual.
Melissa Brown
Sensational Sunday lunch. Friendly staff, delicious food. I recommend the chicken gnocchi

Well i walked past it about 3 years ago and yesterday I walked in what a find great atmosphere like pubs were when I was growing up bar staff were spot on

Best little hiddem gem in Williamstown (aside from the Prince Albert hotel) Cruisy vibe, great beer garden and quality live music on the weekends. BEST Sunday sesh venue around the west (plus it's right next to the train station)
Carmel Murphy

What a charming local pub! I love this place, it has everything you want in a local. The barman chilled and chatty, really good beers on tap, friendly locals wanting to have a chin wag and great music.

The pub is very small but it is cosy and has such a nice vibe. I am not usually a fan of taxidermy animals mounted on walls, however I did like the couple that they had here.

A great place that I will definitely come back to.

Great Parma. Friendly and helpful bar staff. Far too many undertrained “kids” in the restaurant serving food and taking orders. Good food for the price, hats off to the chefs.

Sunday session at Stag Head very popular with band , friendly staff behind the bar. Follow their Instagram account for new menu items. Tuesday open mic night. Just went for a drink but will be back for the food and cocktails- chic martini had my name on it.

Finally! A fillet done properly! I asked rare and it come out rare! (Not so obvious in other W’town pubs). Tender and moist. The oxtail reduction was fabulous. Perfect thickness, perfect balance, the lot. Loved the onion rings. Specials menu very attractive. We will be back for sure.

This pub is a little hidden gem!!! I didn’t realise it was back open and selling quality pub style food. I had the Parma and my partner had the seafood linguine very tasty, fresh and great portion sizes .
I will return for more .

A great pub with great food. The value for money is spot-on. Always with friendly service, we've never been disappointed and would cheerfully recommend.
Thumbs up!

A great little pub, old fashioned and quaint. Great service and great food. The red wine jus is amazing. I recently took friends there for dinner and they loved it too. Taking family there is like taking family home for dinner. I go every 2-3 weeks for the great atmosphere, amazing service and food. Any excuse for dinner and the Stags Head is on the top of my suggestion list.

I was pleasantly surprised on our first visit. We went on a busy Saturday night, without a booking, with two children, 2 and 7 months. Our welcome was friendly, and a table was found though the waitress was apologetic we couldn't stay longer than when the next booking was due. The service was efficient, the waiter/barman was happy to wipe up a spilt drink with good humour. The food was really tasty too, large pieces of very fresh fish, and well cooked. The ambience is nice, there is an open fireplace so it's cosy in winter. I also like that the bar is separate so it's not too noisy for a pub meal.

Shit food. Shit service. Stinks. I could sum this up in less than 140 characters, as i have, but seeing i had to fill in more the public toilets and the local take-away would have been a better option.
Had a great lunch here, and added bonus; four people with drinks under $200! The arancini was excellent, I'd say one of the top two in Melbourne (I've eaten a lot of arancini). I had the kiev, and I disagree with John Cruikshank as to the oiliness, I thought it was perfectly cooked. Entrees and mains unfortunately filled us up and we had no room for dessert. I'll have to go back for the home-made sticky date pudding another time.

Ate here last week. Too noisy to talk. Red haired waitress was cold and unfriendly. Kiev extremely oily. Disappointed and won't be back. Might be different if you were just having a drink

Great local...... My family are repeat offenders at the Stags. Whether its a family meal with our kids, or husband popping down for a few drinks with friends...we always have a fantastic experience. Went down with the kids last week, with the kids having a mix of all the kids specials- which were so well priced and perfect size portions. The kids destroyed the place and the friendly wait staff didn't even bat an eyelid- actually offered them coloring books and pencils! What a great local watering hole...get down there before everyone finds out!!!!

Always love to get a Parma with friends at the Stags. It's my go to local. Great people and warm atmosphere. It's like my second home.

Real pub real people. When you walk on in to the stags as soon as you push that old door open your in a real pub.
The foods great and the beers are cold. The staff here are also great. They are real people with real storries and they are not afraid to have a chat and a laugh. Whilst taking your order. I left this pub looking forward to heading back soon.

Classic pub. Went here recently with some friends and I loved it. The food was fresh and really delicious. I had the risotto and I have been craving it ever since, two mates had the parma and one had the steak and all were extremely happy with their food. After dinner we had a drink in the front bar and I found the vibe very welcoming, the staff had great banter and made us feel right at home, loved it. I'm from Yarraville and I wish there was a classic pub like this here, I would be there all the time. Good work guys, will be back!

Professional, friendly staff, and delicious food. My husband and I recently had the pleasure of dinning at the Stags Head. The evening comprised of friendly attentive staff and delicious food. In particular we were both blown away with the service whilst dining at this establishment. The staff were professional, friendly and warm, allowing us to enjoy the food and atmosphere. We will defiantly re visit on numerous occasions and as new locals to the area we are delighted to have found a cosy traditional pub with wonderful staff and excellent food! Highly recommend a visit!

-----09 Apr, 2015-----

Fantastic service and delicious food!. My husband and I recently had the pleasure of dinning at the Stags Head. That country feel so close to the city!!. When you want to have that feel like your 300km's from rush hour in that country town you love but you don't have the annual leave to get there, this is the perfect place! The food is incredible, the locals make you feel like you live there and the staff treat you like your a local after your first drink. Only 11 kms from the city, this is that country town pub you absolutely adore!!

Insulting barmaid. We visited here in the 24/3/2015 for after dinner drinks to show friends a lovely original local pub. I must say the owner needs to sack the current barmaids, for unfriendly, not welcoming and rude service... what an embarrassment for your establishment! When one asked if my 17 yo looked like someone they knew by a friendly local, one barmaid replied , oh yes she looks like xxxx and she was a slag!!! How terribly rude and insulting. I may mention that my daughter has never been in your establishment.
You have the potential to be the best pub in Willi but not if you don't counsel your staff to be friendly and not rude to customers who had nothing but the best intention to enjoy a beer or two at your pub. Not impressed!!!

Please, Please No more great reviews, easily in the top3 places to eat in Willy.
Book early and enjoy
Not a bad meal on the menu.
And the specials are alway special
The Stags Head had the feel of a traditional Aussie suburban pub, offering basic but good food in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The bill came in around $30 a head including a drink or two each. I think we'll be back again, next time we fancy some pub food fairly near by.

Great food at an affordable price. The Stags head is a great pub in Williamstown, by far the best one offering meals.
All the meals we had were great (fish and chips, steak, risotto, calamari, aranchini and the pasta) and also very large, but still at a good price!
If you're in Williamstown definitely check it out.

What a treasure. Just lunched at the Royal and Ancient Stags - what a wonderful experience. Starting with a super fresh and cold ale in the bar, old style clean glasses, clean lines and staff who know how to treat draught, not just take the top off a stubble.
Then into the Dining Room, had a hearty Pork pie and struggled to finish but not because it was not great, it was fantastic. The pub - and it is a true pub - just oozes charm, character and friendly service topped with great food, not pub grub, but great food.
after lunch, returned to the bar for a cleansing ale and witnessed the Fresh daily delivery ( I asked the fruit and veggie man when he delivered and he smiled and said daily)
If in Willy, don't leave without a visit.

What an awesome little pub .. beautiful old style set up .. decent price and great food.
if I had 4 hands I'd give it 4 thumbs up !

Lovely choice for dinner. Delicious food and live music to finish.

Great classic pub meals, they nail all the basics and turn simple food into great food.

Great little pub. What a great little pub. Not many left like this now. The menu is simple and deals with traditional pub favorite's and the specials board offers a broad range of enticing dishes. Amazing value for money and the food is superbly cooked.
Front bar is great and has some well seasoned locals. I've never been disappointed and will come back again and again.
Definitely worth booking though as its becoming harder to get a table.

Great old pub. One of the last remaining old style pubs in the area, this place does such a good job. Beer is well priced, meals are absolutely great quality, staff are friendly and local and they have live music Friday to Sunday.
Pool table has recently been removed which is such a shame because there aren't enough around anymore, and watch out for the publican and her husband that aren't afraid of giving anyone a mouthful once they've liquored up after their shift.

Hidden treasure. Off the main drag, this is a hidden little treasure. Friendly staff, live music, personal feel, great steak, very reasonable prices.
A great little pub in Willi!

Hidden Gem. The toughest decision here is which night to come. After trying all of them it is for sure that you won't be dissapointed whichever night you choose. The kitchen is turning out fantastic meals and the steak I had on Mothers day was cooked to perfection and having dessert made my day complete. Everything was great. The staff were so friendly and even though the restaurant was full they handled everything superbly. The publican has been working there for over 15 years but took over last year sometime, since taking over, the place has been spruced up for the first time in years and is looking clean and fresh. We love it and will continue to visit this great little pub.

How they charge so much for a place that stinks of booze has me stumped. Top dollar for a Parma? You are kidding. If you just want to drink its ok but that's it.
David Catterall
I like the very homely atmosphere of the unique Bar Area, with adequate outside drinking/eating Court Area.
New Publicans have recently takenover &are eagerly addressing what needs to be fixed & freshened up quickly. Staff changes to both the Catering & Bar goes a long way to improving the whole experience at this unique small 'English Style' pub in the backstreets of Williamstown which is only a 10 minute walk from Gem Pier or only 200 metres from Williamstown Station, at the end of Ann Street. Food is excellent in a location renown for competitive competition for diners & drinkers to be lured to. All up, 3.5 Stars!

Love this iconic venue!! It keeps it's regulars happy! After all that's why it's still there! Good food at a good price. Locals work there, locals go there.. But anyone is welcomed with open arms.. True gem on the better side of willi.
Amy
An authentic pub in the back streets of willy. Had dinner here on a Saturday night, and although very busy, the waitress did an amazing job. Had a Parma, which wasn't huge, but tasty and plenty big enough to fill my belly! Husband had a steak which was also good. Will go back.
Luke
An favourite oldie. Void from the main drag and tourists is this little gem, serving honest pub grub at a comfortable price. In its traditional style and honest in its food and local service, if you're after a classic pub meal in a quiet part of Williamstown drenched in history, hit this little gem up.

Amazing steak night for only $15!
Perfectly cooked and delicious salad :)
Highly recommended!!
Shane
A delightful pub, food was reasonably priced and tasty. However, staff were very rude and need to move on. I'd like to come back for the atmosphere but the entire experience has been spoiled by rude staff on a Tuesday night.
Ryan
Heaps better than the crap you get on nelson place, and cheaper too
Red Rooster
Stags. Food was just at 20 a meal ,beer selectgion is ordinary .Management needs to change it up at this iconic pub!
Sheldon
Needs smartening up. Food was ok pub fare - nothing to get excited about. Too expensive for what it is. Would be nice the whole place could be freshened up a bit and be a little bit cheaper.
Ange
Disappointing. Positively, the Stag's Head is removed from the main streets of Williamstown so getting a seat for Sunday lunch was too easy. Service was friendly but slow with one waitress working the bar and dining room. I had the burger which was the biggest I think I've ever had! Unfortunately it had the worst patty I've ever had - gristly, and the chips were overcooked. Would I eat here again? No.
Simon
Traditional williamstown pub! Awesome food with a great steak night each Wednesday! Would recommend to anyone
