Peter McQuinney
Fish and chip shop located in Nelson Place just opposite the Gem Pier in Williamstown. Nice fish and well cooked chip, also range of other items on menu including sauces and soft drinks. Is also licensed to sell beer and wine, Indoor and outdoor dining. Wheelchair friendly, public toilets

Great fish and chips! Very fresh and services was quick. Friendly staff. The best in the area.

Absolutely the best Fish and Chips we've had in the west. Fish was so fresh, chips were well cooked and the batter used was the best. Next in williamstown, will have to order again. Really loved it ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ thankyou

This shop is located in the busiest part of Walliamstone, very close to the pier. The fish steaks are very fresh and the other foods are delicious.

Nice fish and chips. Just disappointed that a place that offers dine in fish and chips doesn't have sauce in a bottle on the tables. Take away sauce is a great thing to have available to the people that don't want to eat in but charging $1.20 for 40gms of sauce?! I think that's a bit overpriced. Fish was fresh with a light and crispy batter. Very nice. Everything else was was ok. Chips could have been crispier but were ok.

The fish and chips here are the best I've ever had. We have been a few times now and the food is consistently excellent, with that said, the service could be a little better, but the food is good enough that this place still deserved five stars.

Surprisingly bad. Couldn't eat the meal and binned it after a few tentative bites each of the chips, pineapple fritters. The grilled fish was better but tasted 'not fresh.' Staff friendly. Service okay. Hopefully for them it was just a bad day. I won't go back to find out.

Terrible. Fish was dry because it was overcooked as was the batter...it didn't even look nor taste like flake. Potato cake were also overcooked and oily with very little potato. Really disappointing...would not recommend

Love the calamari itโ€™s so good, and the portions are great for the price. Been here plenty of times.

I came across Williamstown Mussels whilst looking for some light lunch. My friend and I shared the calamari and chips. My partner had a chicken burger as he isn't a huge fan of fish. The calamari was perfectly cooked and not at all chewy! The chicken burger was also delicious. I will definitely return when I'm back in the area.

Friendly service, quick, tasty fish & chips. Grilled fish was really good. The take away garden salad was yum. Enjoyed it & will be back when we are in the area again

Chips& side are so so but we like their fish. Butter is very crispy and not too heavy but just nice. One of the best fish and chips in this area.

Nicely fried fish without feeling oily. Fish is tender and juicy. Fries were a little dry to my liking and the calamari was a little tough (although its batter/crumb was very good). No photos taken :( Will drop by again to try other types of fish and seafood.

I have been coming here for the last year. It has always been great fish and chip shop. Always fantastic quality, quick and friendly service. Cannot fault. Definitely recommend!
Maddy
Great chips and potato cakes. We always get the crumbed flake and grilled blue grenadier. The grilled blue grenadier is firm, not soggy. Can't fault them, and they're lovely people too. Better than your average fish and chips.

Chips were a tad salty for the kids but otherwise cooked perfectly. Fish was fantastic, no prawns so tried some mussels, calamari and scallops. I found them quite oily and lacked flavour. No charge for vinegar but tomato sauce had to be purchased even when dining in? Huh, who does that? Expensive but I guess that's how it is in Williamstown.
Andrea
Enjoyable lunch. Fish, chips and salad. The fish had a very light batter which is just exactly the way I like it. Good portion size and a good price.

We love going to Williamstown Mussels and getting fish & chips to takeaway and eat outside in Hobsons Bay. Our favourite fish & chip shop, even though it's on the other side of town! The staff are friendly and the service is quick even when it's busy. On weekends in the summer the line goes all the way out the door for this place. The fish is fresh, beautifully battered and cooked.

TIP: Do try the Salt & Pepper Calamari- our favourite. Don't forget to order Flake- melts in your mouth fresh & delicious!

Horrible, out of date fish (that smelt and tasted foul) and when we complained the female owner had the gall to ask if we'd eaten fish before!!

Overpriced crap, only does well due to its position. Terrible service and made us feel like we were the ones with the problem for having a complaint. Avoid this place.

We both chose the โ€˜Fish and Chips ($9.90)โ€™. Two massive serves of fish and chips arrived at our table! We also received a wedge of lemon each. The tempura battered Blue Grenadier was brilliant and the chips were crunchy.

Drop by a Saturday afternoon, have a take away fish & chips pack & salt& pepper calamari pack . Not too bad . Feeling chill with the beautiful pier view .

Had lunch here, had the fish and chips. Both tasted well and lightly salted and crispy chips, just the way i like it. The fish was nicely battered and cooked well.

Though the fish was actually very nice, as were the chips, though could have used another 3 shakes of the salter, I had to give them a lower rating because we asked for 3 pieces of fish and a min chips, and what we got was 2 pieces of flake and a piece that looked like a small chicken tenderloin. So the 3 of us were hungry as no one had a full meal.

Da best fish and chips in town
Service was quick, the chips and fish were not too oily
There was a very thin layer of batter so you had more taste of fish
Definitely recommend!!

Nice little joint in Williamstown- service was quick and friendly. Loved their fish burger- crispy on outside and not overcooked. Good with a nice cold drink on a hot day.

Great fish n chips! Not overly oily, quality flake, chips had a nice crunch to them and their homemade burgers are tasty. Give it a go next time you are in Williamstown.

This fish looks bad. It is bad! It tastes like nothing, Iโ€™m disappointed I recommended we come here for lunch. I think there has been a change of owners,

Williamstown Mussels has been around for a while now. They are near the Sea Shepherd boats and about a five minute stroll from Williamstown beach station. It has been popular with the locals for a long time. This is where they used to buy their fish packs from. The menu I love the little fish The table The open kitchen That day I went with a whole lot of International students as we were exploring Williamstown. But the service was a little bit drab with the Asian lady refusing to smile. She refused to explain what the fish of the day is to the International Students. It took a long time for me to be served seeing as it was after 1:30pm that day. There are a lot of meals and fish and chip packs for under $10. Here it had flake and chips with tartare (mayonnaise sauce). A lot of International students come from Asia and they have never tried this type of food before. So here's a heads up as to what fish and chips is: it is deep fried fish and chips usually in thick batter. The chips are

Terrible. The worst fish and chips I've ever bought. Threw it out

Shame on your for your rude attitude towards a group of disabled people.

Not too salty :). The restaurant was very peaceful only one other table had customers ( a little surprising for a frid night) customer service was ok no complaints We ordered 2 fish and chip packs one grilled and one battered, we also ordered a chicken spring roll and potato cake. The food came out beautifully presented on a plate and looked great, the grilled fish tasted fine and so did the fried fish that batter was ok too, it seemed to be beer batter tasting was very dark in colour and didn't seem too oily I like my fish a little thicker personally. The chips were fine too, not overly salty which was good as I was sharing with my son, Infact I added a little extra salt on mine. ( prefer to add my own) potato cake was pretty boring seemed very mass produced, I liked the chicken spring roll as it was flavoursome and different.
JK
Expensive and not nice. Fish was weird potato cakes really crappy. Chips were ok
Glen
Awful, Awful, Awful!. Ridiculously poor service from rude & dismissive 30 y.o. guy that obviously did not want to be working behind the counter. No refund offered for fish that smelled & tasted full of chemicals... almost caused me to vomit...it was inedible.
Food: POOR
Service: EVEN POORER

NEVER EAT HERE...
Adam.mcg
Just good old fish and chips. Flake was fresh and big, chips were good .

Average quality, good price. Mussels is a supremely average waterside fish & chips place. There are a million of them in seaside towns all over the British colonised world. The flake and chips I had from here was not bad, not outstanding, but serviceable. The filet was on the small side. Maybe that's why the fresh-faced Asian counter girl (the grumpy guy was at the greas vat) threw on a free potato cake. Thanks! The beer batter stayed on the fish, the flake was fresh-ish (didn't taste "just caught") and there were a decent amount of chips. All of it was well-cooked. The best thing about this feed was the price, only $9.90 for the filet and fries. That's a bit cheaper than most such joints these days.

Service without a smile. Fish and chips were ok, bit greasy and nothing special.
To top it off, you get a grumpy old man or grumpy younger guy serving you. Can't even swap one item for another.. meh. There's a reason why the other fish and chip store is busier than this place.

Simply Delicious. I'm glad to see a few people agree with me but I have to say it, I am sincerely surprised by the downright negative ( and in some cases, purely nasty ) reviews I have encountered here!
I have frequented Williamstown Mussels on several occasions and I have no complaints what-so-ever.
The service is delightful, the staff are always friendly, helpful and it was particularly lovely when the lady serving me at the counter acknowledged and recognised our return visit to the shop without any prompting from my part.

We have had the pleasure of sampling several different items from the menu and have always been extremely pleased with the food; it's cooked fresh when you order as opposed to being served up pre-cooked meals like most fast food outlets. The batter they use is incredibly light and tasty, the salad was a fresh greek salad with the works and topped with a homemade dressing that was unique in flavour and truly delicious. Not to mention the size of the meals, all I can say is, HUGE!
When ordering you are given the option of dining on the street-front, indoors or in the very quaint courtyard situated at the rear of the shop. Or you can choose to "take-away" and perhaps enjoy the beautiful park directly opposite the premises or take a short drive up the road and dine whilst sitting on the beach. Either way, you will get to enjoy a top-notch meal in a lovely setting!
I would go as far as saying, this is the best fish and chip shop in Melbourne!!
Bravo Williamstown Mussels! We will definitely be back again! ^_^

Very Ordinary Fish and Chips. Having never been and looking somewhere for dinner we used the entertainment book, which was no problem, we ordered four fish packs, two being complimentary, the fish was soggy and could not tell you the type that it was, didn't taste like flake and the chips were below par, service again below standard but the seagulls at the park had a fantastic feed, to bad we didn't feel the same.
TAM
Very average.

Very poor quality of food. Soggy chips, fish didn't seem fresh. very disappointed with the service as well. Do not recommend

Service without a smile. Fish/seafood was really tasty but the man that served us gave poor customer service.

Avoid. Being a winter weekday williamstown and the shop were pretty empty.
Theguy serving looked a bit disapointed that i used an enteryainment book voucher of buy 1 get 1 free.
Service was fast but the fish (flake i think) was very ordinary.
Didn't taste fresh at all.
Wont go back again

Slodge cooked in dirty oil.

Nice. Fish was nice and fresh. Portions were large. Overall a great cheap meal and enjoyed sitting in the park over the road in a warm summer night. Service was pretty good too - the guy was lovely.

Yes, it's true. The fish is good

First and Last Time. I wouldn't mind the hour wait if the feed at the end was worth it, but it wasn't. Should have known better having ordered and came back after half hour to wait another half hour and watch some terribly disorganized people serve orders out of a Bain Marie at the average rate of one order every two to three minutes. Fish that's been in a Bain Marie for let's say 30 mins was never gunnar be good and undercooked chips and tater cakes was the cream on a disappointing experience. try your luck on a very quiet day or give it a miss.

Went there on Fathers Day, waited an hour for fish that had obviously been sitting for too long .Worst fish and chips we had ever tasted together with the hour wait made for an unpleasant experience. And the old man at the serving counter was rude ,grumpy, and obviously never shown how to smile.

Restaurant quality food compared with the average fish and chippery! Cleanly and rapidly prepared. Such a nice change after the nasty shock we had across the road at the Town Fryer.

The best fish and chips I have had in a LONG time!! Decided to try this place because I had an entertainment voucher.. Let me say, the serving was very big and the fish n chip pack came with a nice thick and large piece of fish! None of that scabby fish here!!! Highly recommended and will definately be back!!

A Water's Edge Take Away - That Can Be Eaten In.. I'm surprised how many Fish and Chip places appear on Urbanspoon, but i do believe they deserve to be there. After all, they have service, food and some form of liquid refreshment.
Williamstown Mussels differs from most by having a less standard menu, opting for more seafood that sides. There are no corn jacks or crab sticks, but there are Scallop Kebabs (two scallops on a stick, battered, fried) and, of course, mussels.
The service is folksy, the food is good quality and low and behold, they have both Pepsi and Coke. Now THAT's a wine list. There's a courtyard in the rear that is petite, but quaint.

Grumpy Fart adds nothing. Why bite the hand that feeds you?. Been here many times but was a little disappointed this time. The hamburger was a big letdown, usually the bun is huge, fluffy and a little crispy, very tasty, but this time, just a standard flat bun that was nothing special. The flake was good, and the chips excellent.

The old bloke there (the owner I am guessing) gives pretty poor customer service too. I know the shop is crowded, it's a take away place, and he's probably making a killing without smiling, but why not be a little friendlier to the customers? There are heaps of other places to choose from in Willy you know. Disappointed. BH.

Best of Bunch. There's a bunch of Fish n Chippies in Willi. This is where we go ... again and again. Best of the bunch.

It's not that often that one can rave about fish and chips but after checking out this shop on New Years Eve (an incredibly busy time by the number of customers) I could not go without posting a glowing review. Despite the crowd, the owner still took the time to converse with us and was most friendly. The fish, chips and dim sims we ate were the stand out however. The Crisp batter was crisp and light and the freshness mist notable. Despite living a ten minute drive away, this will now become my regular for traditional fish and chips. Well done to the owners and staff. (they are also licensed and have a rear courtyard but did not use so cannot comment further).

Absolutely fantastic - some of the best fish and chips I've had. Had the seafood grill - at $28, not cheap but the servings were generous and range of seafood impressive. Perfectly cooked and lightly flavored with herbs. Delicious. My partner had the fish burger which was also impressive.

Should be renamed Williamstown oil and soggy chips. This place was bad. I couldn't even bring myself to feed the leftovers to the seagulls.
Food Floozy
Fish and chips - who doesn't like them? Crunchy salted chips and tasty succulent pieces of seafood, homemade sauces, lemon, yum... what's not to like about that! Nothing, its delicious and its a fact.
