Review Batterbing - Williamstown

Rob Skelton
Perfect, tasty and quickly cooked. They nicely offer a kid’s portion of chips that will suit smaller appetites (and wallets)

I have been here more than half a dozen times, and it is consistently excellent. Scallops are outstanding, the fish is fresh and nicely cooked, and the chips are hand cut and well seasoned. I’d even go to the extent to say Batterbing are my favourite fish and chips right now. Highly recommended

My first visit and was on the go, so it was nice to zoom in here, place an order and in just over 10 minutes it was ready. I had the Little Jerry Seinfeld Burger and it was fabulous. Portion size good. Staff were really lovely and helpful and of course, fast. Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Reasonable parking nearby.

Just ordered the 18.80 meal deal with burger, drink, chips and 3 wings and he didn’t put it in a carry bag for me and as i was getting in my car the burger and chips all fell out on the floor witch could of been prevented with a carry bag for customers. Not only that he put my 3 wings in a very small bag equivalent to a macdonalds medium chips and stack a couple chips on top of the wings so i lost all my chips on the floor. Why don’t i get a full small seperate bag of chips for $20 i cant wrap my head around it. Good way to loose local customers. Its not about the cool pictures and advertising its about customer satisfaction. Wings were dry burger lacked any ingredients felt empty.

I ordered from Batterbing at 6:45pm, thru Menulog and yes initially the delay was thru Menulog but then after an hour the driver was there and there was no progress with food. After waiting a further 1/2 hour I walked to the store and on the way down had canned Menulog for service only to arrive and find their driver and other delivery drivers waiting for food. The shop had 1 worker and stated sorry busy it’s a Friday night. Whilst sympathetic that COViD had effected them it is not right to be on a service like Uber or Menulog if you cannot keep up with the demand. Especially if you are running 1 staff member on a Friday.

Firstly, this is not my regular fish and chips shop. I wanted to see if all the hype was true. I went there on a Friday evening, ordered a flake and two potato cakes. Was told it would take half an hour. That didn't bother me. The food was nicely packaged. The fish is not a generous serving, though the flesh tastes very fresh inside. Not too oily. Yes, they gave a side of chips, even though I didn't order it. I would have preferred a larger sized piece of fish than the side of chips. That's all. Worth having a try, but other shops give bigger portions

Waiting at the front of the queue for 15 minutes without ordering while the staff continually stuffed up orders, gave out incorrect food packs to people, didn’t give people their full orders - couldn’t watch or wait any longer! What a mess of a business.

Been waiting for a decent fish and chip shop in Williamstown with some variety and freshness and finally there is one!!! Super generous portions, cooked to order and great service! Will be back again. And again. And again.

I first went to Batterbing in summer and it was incredible. Returned last night and it couldn’t have been more different. We got the couples box and it was a sloppy, soggy mess. Everything was so oily especially the fish, it was actually dripping with oil which made everything else in the box soggy too. The fish didn’t taste fresh and the chips tasted odd. Some of them were dark brown like the oil was too hot or over done? I feel crook straight after eating it and my partner is feeling sick the day after. Very disappointing because it really was amazing when we last went in March!

Batterbing was the best in the Williamstown which was worth the drive. Bring back the brown rice in the miso salmon and the handcut potato chips so it was disappointing. Besides from that the flavours and the quality of the fry was still slightly there but I wish corners weren't cut since the change in management. Portion size have also dropped for the lunch pack<br/><br/>Please bring back brown rice in your miso salmon and the rustic hand cut chips. It's not the same without it.<br/>These smaller things will bring it back to its former glory

This establishment use to be one of the best fish and chip shops in Melbourne until<br/>A couple of weeks ago when it changed owners I presume, unfortunately it has now<br/>shadow of its former self, previously the hand cut chips were compulsory now replaced with frozen cubes the seafood portions have shrunk but the prices have increased as well as the salt content, now the only similarity with the former shop is the name and the box the food comes in.<br/>This will in my opinion become yet another<br/>Fast food casualty because of greed.

Good taste, one of the best fish and chips in town. would love to eat here if visiting the town. The price not expensive. It has outdoor sitting, so can eat the food there.

First time here when visiting the town. I tried fish & chips and it tasted good. Ordered large chips and it was really large. it's a portion for 4 to 5 persons, I think. Anyway it's worth a try.

Hands down the best fish and chips I can remember eating. Had the combo for 2 and an extra whiting. It was all truly delicious. Nice staff. Can I please be transported to the world where fish and chips are good for you ??? Perhaps will try the salad options next time. Great find and excellent value<br/>

Fourth visit and I’m seriously debating if I will ever go back. For a fish shop that closes at 8:30 pm, to be turned away at 7:30 pm because, “we’re not taking anymore orders” is just not on. No sorry, apologies or nothing. It’s holiday season and these guys need to be better organised, because if you do this to too many people you’ll soon wonder where all the customers have gone! Yes, the food is pretty good, but is it worth the wait or risk of being turned away, I’m no longer sure.

I almost missed this place as I was walking by but I'm glad I took a second look. The $12 fish, chips and salad deal is really good value. The chips are hand cut, salad was tasty and the fish was beautifully battered. Even comes with a tartare sauce. I will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu!

This place located on the same site that one of Williamstown's oldest fish and chips (old style) shop was located for decades is a welcomed addition to the Douglas Pde businesses. Its almost like a reboot of the original shop. And may i say its done a fine job too! Look, this place has a more interesting menu than the other local FnC places with its soft shell crab burgers and varied fish packs and it doesn't disappoint. Food is fresh, well presented and packaged and even though priced a little more than other s....real value for money. The staff are friendly and very helpful. And they always give you lots lemon wedges in your fish pack...you dont have to ask!....Or even worse get home and realise you dont have any...arrgghh! They are worth visiting....i hope they do well and the premises continue the long tradition of Fish & Chips on Doughie Parade!!

Their chips is tasty and nicer than other fish and chips shop. Fish is ok but felt a bit thinner. I prefer other shop fish in this area. Corn is very unique and nice but very small and over priced with that size.

Delicious can’t really fault it. Fresh fish, real chips, good portion size value for money. Well seasoned and a light batter didn’t finish up being too greasy. Nice tartare sauce too. One of the best fish and chips we’ve had in Victoria.

I was dying to try here even though other locals hadn’t raved about it. Friday night, only a 20 min wait which I didn’t think was too bad. <br/><br/>Understand that they are trying to have a point of difference with the box it was served in, but the tried and tested wrapped in paper works for a reason. My fish was dry and cold by the time I got home. The chips needed another minute in the deep fryer. The corn was soggy and just a bit weird. <br/><br/>Will be sticking to my local fish n chips, no contest here.

This place rocks - though new to Williamstown it already has a bit of a cult following- it's fish and chips plus so much more. BEAUTIFUL Haloumi salads. The grilled Miso Salmon salad is divine- get in before the line is all the way down Doggie parade

The fish and chips were cooked beautifully with an amazing batter....the best fish and chips I’ve had in ages. Really kid friendly. The staff were really lovely too.

The chips are really nice, the portions are good, the chicken burger was really good. The fish is also good. I would say It is the best fish and chip shop in the area.

terrible fish and chips! arrived very late! after i requested extra tartare sauce in the comment column they sent none?? i feel like the chef was trying to teach me a lesson for asking for extra sauce!! fish very dry and soggy!! fish cake extremely dry! deepfried sweetcorn!! very lazy. what a waste of money! ill never go back!

Best chips I’ve had all over the west and beyond. Fish delicious. Salad menu different and tasty and made fresh to order rather than in a glass display cabinet like lots of places. Definitely give them a go. Shocked at all of these reviews. Now been twice and consistently happy.

I dunno why there are all these negative reviews for this place :(. I reckon the fish and chips and salad was absolutely delish and the service was friendly and kind. Their scallops are amazinggggggggg too! <br/><br/>The only thing is that the food took a bit longer than expected to come out but otherwise no complaints from me at all :)
Amit
Food looked nice and I was very excited by the menu. The service was good but it was dirty inside, like they’d been slammed with orders but was early in the day. The bun was stale and so greasy I couldn’t finish it. I hope they pick up their game. I was really disappointed ☹️

I really really wanted to like this place! I loved the menu, I hoped for handcut chips and I thought $12 for a meal was great value! The guys were friendly and the fish looked fresh and great choice! Rice, salad, grilled fish, win win win! <br/><br/>All sounds good? Yup. Aaaaaaaand then came the hygiene. No gloves, hats, hairnets, aprons and couldn’t see a washed hand in sight. <br/><br/>The guy grabbed a handful of sweet potato chips in his sweaty paw stuffed them in a box and then proceeded to work the register, handling money and cards, wiping his hands on his pants. Washed a couple of bowls, more money then food handling. Urgh. <br/><br/>Needless to say I found a hair in my food and didn’t feel great after it.<br/><br/>This place could be awesome, but please just clean up your act!
How It Is
The food is good, and the portions are great, careful to not let the food get too soggy in the box, however I have never been told the correct cooking time, 40mins = 1 hour, 15mins = 20mins.<br/><br/>Next visit I now discover it’s a fish and chip shop with no chips at 7pm..............

We walked past this newly opened fish and chips shop and decided to give it a try and we were so glad we did. We ordered the "Combo for 1"<br/>If a picture tells a thousand words, the picture We took would tell you the quality of what we received. <br/><br/>The flake was sweet, fresh and crisp. The calamari was freshly battered and well cooked. The chips were also crisp and although they ran out of the hand cut chips, the chips were golden brown and well cooked. The whole pack came with fresh lemon slices, tartar sauce and it was well seasoned. <br/><br/>The whole meal was packed in a large box instead of the usual butcher paper wrap which I thought was a great idea as it ensured that the fish, chips and calamari remained crisp all the way. <br/><br/>Overall, a very welcomed addition to the Williamstown fish and chips scene. You can tell that a lot of thought and care has been put in and you can certainly taste the quality and care in the end product. <br/><br/>I've tried a lot of fish and chip places throughout Melbourne and Victoria and I would rate this as one of the much better places. Prices are very reasonable and the quality is top notch. We will certainly be back again with the kids and this could very well be our regular 'go to' fish and chip joint.

Had the standard burger, house cut chips and a shit load of salt. Where do I start, the house cut chips are not what they say. They’re frozen chips from a bag sold in a pretty box that sweats because the box is too thick. Oh and the burger, $11 for a standard burger and a handful of chips!!! Way overpriced but it is Williamstown right. WRONG. The bun was a little stale, not much taste from their secret sauce and for a standard burger it was pathetic. The standard burger needs to be awesome, not slapped together with minimal ingredients and sold at a premium price. GET RID OF THE PRETTY BOXES.......
