Review Tokyo Tina - Windsor

Jason Tabrett
I had heard lots of good things about Fonda and decided to give it a try! The burritos were interestingly very healthy using substitutes instead of rice and other fillings. There were some interesting choices of margaritas and I loved the one I chose! The food and drinks are a bit expensive and medium size, so it’s not a place to go to for a big meal or to get drunk. If you want a Mexican place with delicious tasting food and drinks to enjoy however, this is your place! The staff were beyond friendly and it was a pleasant experience all round!

The food was tasty and the service was good, but the vibe and ambience were greatly lacking. It was like eating take out food in a food court or similar - just happened to be seated inside. My eldest daughter found the food too spicy and didn't enjoy the meal (except the chips).
Adwait M
Mediocre at the very best. Have had better Mexican food at average Mexican restaurants at half the price. The burritos require a major flavour upgrade whereas the tacos were ‘dry’ - for the lack of a better word. The only saving grace was the mango chilli margarita which was delicious.

Went with a big group on a Saturday night. We were spending quite a bit of money and we were greeted with the rudest waitress I’ve ever encountered. She gave a horrible attitude when dealing with us the whole night and wouldn’t stay when we were asking questions. On top of this most of the food orders came out wrong and 45min after we had ordered. I used to love Fonda Windsor but after this experience I think I’ll hold off from having to interact with the incredibly unhelpful staff and copping death stares from the waitress’s.

Food was good but not the best Mexican place I have eaten at. The drinks weren't bad either. Prices were standard for a restaurant. Overall an good but not great place. Also, no table service which was a bit annoying.

It’s a beautiful restaurant with a great set up. It will definitely catch your eyes on the Chapel Street. The food was delicious with their set menu worth every penny. Their drinks could have been better but apart from that the chicken burrito and chips were just absolutely remarkable!

Came in on Friday night for dinner and the food was delicious! Emma was really nice and provided great service throughout the evening. Will definitely be coming back!

Visited late afternoon .Was a quiet restaurant with 3 tables .Food came out quick. We had the quesadilla combo with a house made strawberry lime soda and chips and 2 bags from the special Collab with wonder bao. Would give the bao's a miss as they were pretty average .The quesadilla was nice and refreshing and not very cheesy with the flavour of the pulled pork showing thru. Strawberry soda was okay .The smoked salsa with the combo was the highlight.

Amazing, amazing, amazing. Visiting from the Land of the Long White Cloud and this place is a must to visit. From the Pork Bao & Beef Rib Bao, we tried the Snapper as well and all we're 5 star!!!! The broth in the snapper dish is to die for. The staff made us feel at home and do hospo proud, explained the menu and options well and we're very attentive 10/10. They must have known what music we love because the playlist was on . I will be back Tokyo Tina. Tu meke!!!

Wanted to try everything on the menu so settled $55 chefs selection. The food did not stop coming. We were all sooooo full before desert was even served. Our waitress was amazing and super knowledgable about the items on the menu. Great night. Thank you.

Fast paced restaurant with excellent service. Food is superb, especially the charcoal cone with kingfish, wasabi etc is delicious. We’ve not had a bad dish here. If you haven’t been put it on the list to visit.

Went to the drag bingo brunch on Sunday. It rocked. Drag queen was funny, the prizes were terrible (as advertised) the food was great and the drinks were free flowing...really enjoyed the experience and can’t wait to go again.

You guys are my heroes! I usually struggle to eat out as I have a few food intolerances. Not at Tokyo Tina! The staff were beyond helpful, and ensured my friend and I were well looked after. The food was delicious, atmosphere was great and the service was unbelievable. Can't recommend this place enough!
Alecia Thompson
What a fab place. Service was fantastic. We opted for the pork bao and bed ribs bao followed by steamed snapper! All the dishes we tasty, fresh and soulful. Highly recommend!

First time I had eaten at Tokyo Tina with my partner. Amazing food & good service. Will definitely be going back & would definitely recommend. 👌🏽

Great food, really good service and friendly staff. The menu and wine list has something for everyone

Delicious food. Quick turnaround but we were there quite early in service. Flavours and execution were on point. Such a progressive menu - we will be back!

The food is good. I have a complaint about bartender in specific. They should definitely apply much better the RSA premises without ruin people's night. Very snobby.

Cool place, great and speedy service. Very tasty food

The menu at Tokyo Tina is exceptional, it's like there are 6 or 7 'signature' dishes. Unbelievable quality. I find the service and care at this particular restaurant outstanding (compared to their sister restaurants I have to say). We were greeted warmly, even with a pram, and checked on to ensure we were happy very often, which we were!

Went there for our anniversary dinner. The food was ok it was better the last time we went. The food did come out quite quick. Over all spent $100 and order 6 things and left feeling not satisfied. But we will try it again might just have been a off night.

We loveTokyo Tina! Thanks for being so fun yet so professional. You guys just get it right, and oh my, the food. You made our birthday party great.

Not taking bookings is a really hostile way to treat your customers. Last night I came in at 7pm with a group of four. I put my name down and was told it would be between 1-1.5 hour wait. The wait ended up being just over 2.5 hours. I know you think this is a 'cool' business model but take it direct from one of your customers; your refusal to allow bookings sucks! You failed to meet the promise of 1-1.5 hours, it really pissed us off. The food was great but said greatness was dramatically countered by the wait. Overall rating: two cold soggy bao bun stars

Ordered 3 weeks in advance for Father’s Day delivery to my dad. Estimated delivery bw 1-5pm. Called restaurant after 6pm but no answer. Still no delivery after 846pm... ultimately the delivery NEVER ARRIVED!!

the most frustrating part was that they provided absolutely no update that they were running late!! Even the day after, there were no apologies or explanations by email/phone for the missed delivery!!!

It’s hard to feel for small businesses when they lack basic level of communication to their clients!!! Since we have another 7 more weeks of lockdown, it’s upto you to decide whether you want to take a chance with such UNPROFESSIONAL delivery service

I like the Bibimbab, not spicy enough for me and prefer having the rice cracker at the bottom. I’m in love with the crispy eggplant, it’s a must order! Absolutely nailed the art of deep fried. Not many other restaurants can do the same
The ramen was disappointing for that price as well.
Wouldn’t recommend

This is the second time in a row we have been served colder-than-luke-warm ramen and been dissatisfied. The first time (many months ago) we complained and were provided with a new hot dish which we thrououghly enjoyed. This time, we initially ordered the new mapo tofu because we didn't want the same issue occurring, only to be presented with a tiny bowl of mapo tofu which had very little resemblance to mapo tofu. There was no chilli sauce, like the traditional mapo tofu has. There was also no flavour whatsoever. We then requested it to be swapped for the ramen, only for that to be brought out colder than our last visit. The raw mushrooms on top didn't get the chance to be cooked by the broth by stirring them through because the broth wasn't hot enough AND the noodles weren't fully cooked - the dish was practically inedible. In saying all this, I could not fault the service - the girls that assisted both times were lovely and very helpful and I love the ambience (the music choice was perfect!). It's just a shame about the quality of food.
Josh Alderson
The food is pretty good but the service can be hit and miss. Wrong items were added on on tab which were for the table next to us. Items I ordered we missed. When the food does come out it's great. Would still go back for the pork belly.

Zomato Rating 3.5
We have visited Tokyo Tina quite a few times however not recently. It remains consistent serving their take on Japanese food, think crickets with almonds snack if you want to try something quirky, and the service is friendly.

👍🏻 what you should order: smoked duck bimbimbap, karaage chicken, all of their cocktails
*
Overall score: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
*
Tokyo Tina is the type of place that you would go for a meal with your friends if you would like to indulge in asian fusion. Do not come here if you are looking for traditional Asian food - Tokyo Tina prides itself in serving a wide range of Asian dishes with a slight twist.

After a few visits, I’ve come to realise that if you order the right dishes, you are guaranteed to have a good time. Some of my favourite dishes are:
1. The smoked duck bimbimbap: do not pour all the chilli sauce if you don’t enjoy spicy food. We usually pour about half and it’s sufficient. Really enjoy the smoked duck.
2. Karaage chicken: who doesn’t enjoy crispy chicken alongside kewpie? This is a classic favourite which went well with their cocktails!
3. Eggplant chips - not as crispy and rich as the ones I had at some Sichuan restaurants, but the honey coat works well.
4. The yakitori sticks were delicious - not the best we’ve had, but perfectly charred and full of flavour
5. Tokyo Tina also had a good selection of sashimi dishes. We wiped the kingfish sashimi and yellow fish tuna clean!!

The dishes that we found to be less appetising were the pork belly bao - the pork belly meat was a bit dry and portions were small. The pork hock was also quite tough and hard to cut through. The pork and kimchi gyoza also didn’t work as well - something about the pork meat tasting slightly odd.

Having said that, after 2 visits, we now order our favourite dishes and really enjoy our time at Tokyo Tina. The drink selections are especially good - I haven’t had a cocktail I didn’t enjoy at Tokyo Tina. The great music playlist and top notch service are also huge pluses - it’s no wonder the restaurant is consistently crowded!
*
Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ambience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Price: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I enjoyed the vegan all you can eat experience here & loved it

DRINKS
Rose: A nice glass of rose to enjoy with dinner

FOOD
I was definitely surprised by the number of dishes & how full I was after my meal. I especially loved the eggplant, cauliflower & ramen dishes!

The service was very professional & friendly.
Food For Thought
The restaurant has a really trendy hippy Japanese vibe, being close to Windsor station. Staff are very friendly but food was really outstanding, especially the Kingfish sashimi, Chicken Yakitori and Wagyu tartare. What is served is a modern interpretation of Japanese food that is delivered with perfection in presentation, flavours and textures.

We had the feed me set menu for my birthday. Loved the entrees (corn balls were a highlight) however the mains sadly let us down. I recommend ordering dishes off the menu - definitely try the karaage chicken and the pork belly bao.

Good food, friendly service!

Absolutely love this Asian fusion gem on Chapel! I've dined here multiple times, and try something new on the menu everytime - I'm sure I'll work my way through the entire thing soon! All of the dishes that I've tried have been outstanding - my favourites are the kaarage chicken, wagyu beef skewers and the charred cauliflower.

It's always great vibes in there and its nice sitting outside with the heaters on when its a little colder. Staff are very friendly and attentive also.

I heard they do bottomless brunch as well so will have to head back to try it out!
Crissy Mi
Good Service and the food is so good, will come back again.

The food was amazing. We ordered feed me, it was fulfilling. Mushrooms and avocado bao was the star in the vegetarian meal.
Excellent food
Excellent location
Excellent service
Excellent wine/cocktail/saki selection
Enjoyed every mouthful and minute here last night. Thanks so much!!

By far my favourite restaurant in Melbourne, food is amazing, service is always great and the time the food takes to be served is second to none without losing any taste.

If I were to choose my perfect meal, sharing with someone else, it would be to start with Edamame, karaage corn balls, then give it 10 mins or so and order karaage chicken, beef diy and if im still hungry maybe a bowl of spicy chicken ramen and id be surprised if this was anywhere near $80.

This place is owned by people who care about service and producing the best food in Melbourne.
Queen Of Food
I visited Tokyo Tina the other night with some friends and we were given the private dining room which was a nice touch. First and foremost the staff were incredibly attentive and explained each of the dishes well. The highlight dishes for me were the kingfish sashimi (wonderful flavours and fresh), the eggplant (crispy on the outside and soft on the inside) and the cauliflower (a very different style to anything I’ve had in other restaurants). I also liked the flavouring on the edamame - again it was different to the usual options you get at other places. For dessert we shared the pudding and this was beautifully sweet and moist, decadent and perfect for a cold winter night. I’m not a fan of caramel usually however I will say the caramel sauce here was delightful! All in all we had a good dining experience and look forward to returning.

The ambience is nice. Friendly service. But the food is meh. Lacking exciting flavours. I would not return. The best dish we had was the beef rib bao. Everything else was not worth it. Even disappointed with the kingfish sashimi which never happens when I order it elsewhere.

Lovely food and atmosphere

Strange place. From the outside it looks a tad ordinary. The Japanese imagery is a bit kitsch. The staff are very efficient and warm and we soon had menus. The food is a cross between Korean Japanese and Western fusion. The kitchen knocks out some very interesting food like salmon tartare and wagyu skewers. All great tastes and quite creative. Loved the coffee in a teapot. This was lunch. Judging by the interesting drink shelves this would be a fun place in evenings.
Shirley Chen
waitress are nice and friendly. I order a spicy chicken&white sesame ramen. Noodle and chicken are great, but the soup for me is too plain I think soup is also ramen's soul, so this ramen meal doesn't satisfied me.😢
Andrea Porcaro
Top quality food although they are always booked and busy! I keep coming back for the short rib bao. It would be good to see some updates to the menu, or even some specials as things have seemed the same for a while.
Simply WonderFood
Tokyo Tina is an awesome restaurant in Windsor. I really enjoy that you can get meals to share or you can be antisocial and get yourself an individual dish too! I love their ramens and in summer they also have poke bowls that are amazing!
Daisy Never Too Sweet
When was the last time you played Bingo? Have you even played before? Haha I’ve always thought it was an old people’s game but it’s actually so damn fun especially when it’s at Tokyo Tina for $65-$69 I forgot! You get 5 dishes to choose from which more than enough to share amongst the table and then bottomless Prosecco and aperol spritz!
I had the best fun with some girlfriends and I have to be honest, it’s always more fun with a drag queen hosts it!
Avolette
Bustling cool Japanese fusion eatery on Chapel Street. Popular amongst tourists, youth, and locals alike!

I had tried to dine at Tokyo Tina several times but it was always difficult to just walk in and get a table on the weekend. When I was finally able to try their delectable dishes, I understood what all the hype was about!

The DIY beef rib bao was amazing! The beef just slide right off the bone and was very flavoursome sandwiched between the fluffy white bao.

Cripsy corn balls was indulgent and crunchy balls of goodness.

I also enjoyed the grilled asparagus.

Cocktails were on point and the staff were fun and friendly!

I can't wait to try their themed bottomless brunch!
Keen For Cuisine
3.5

Tokyo Tina is the perfect date night spot 😍😍 always great atmosphere in there and the service is spot on. We enjoyed the diy beef bao and the ramen, but the Udon was super underwhelming. The udon noodles weren't chewy and the broth was very under seasoned and didn't have a great depth of flavour - was like a soup made out of just hot water. Ended up adding a load of soy sauce for it to have a bit of salty flavour. Considering the high price point we were very disappointed with this dish.
EatsByM
Wanted to try this place for a while and only got around to it recently has every time I’ve been it’s been so busy!

The staff were super lovely and very helpful when it came to ordering!

We ordered the beef baos, Japanese pancakes and the pork hock. The highlight was definitely the beef bao’s for me. The Japanese pancakes were quite delicious and they were nice and crunchy!

The most disappointing was the pork hock. It was so dry and lacked so much in flavor. Considering that was the “main” we were very underwhelmed.

Tokyo Tina is a fun and tasty restaurant providing the goods with Japanese street food with a modern twist and a cool atmosphere in the heart of Chapel Street, Windsor. There is plenty of space inside and out, even in winter, you can sit outside under the warmth of the heaters. A great place for delicious Japanese food and good vibes. 🍜
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: as soon as I walked in I felt great vibes and ambience. The staff here are super attentive and noted that my friend had food allergies and catered for that. They always came back to see if we needed anything.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I loved the skewers - we ordered the chicken skewers and they were charred and barbecued deliciously. We also tried the

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: the bibimbap is a let down unfortunately, especially because I thought “Tokyo” Tina was Japanese not Korean? Well anyway, the kochujang (Korean spicy sauce) didn’t have the chilli punch to it and didn’t add to the overall dish. It lacked meat.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: loved the vibes of this restaurant and I’d love to come back to try more on their menu.

Had a fabulous time at Bottomless Bingo Brunch. Amazing food- Aperol spritzes a-plenty and the wonderful Valerie Hex calling Bingo. Superb Sunday!

Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful with selecting our food choices. Atmosphere was a mix of a hipster and of course, Japanese vibe.
Started off with the salmon tartare dish which was zesty and refreshing! The sesame crackers added nice texture to the dish.
The Japanese pancake was layered nicely with crispy sesame crackers and Japanese mayo/dressing to match.
The pork was a generous serving with spring onion roti and assortment of condiments. Tasty meat with a crispy skin. However, the skin became overwhelming after a while.
Would definitely recommend this place! Affordable and quality food!

didnt expect to find this place. we were just walking along street and this one def catch our attention! loveeee the place and the food. the service is really great too! we had liam served us and he is amazing! :)

3.5

Toyko Tina is a semi fusion Japanese restaurant that is situated on Chapel Street. Love the décor inside, really cool and sets the vibe for a modern Japanese meal. I really like the carpaccio here and also the chicken ramen which my friend is addicted to

Okay portion sizes and not bad pricing

Tokyo Tina is a hidden gem, I never noticed this restaurant when passing. It doesn’t look like much from the outside but the food is great. The wagyu beef skewers were delicious, I would highly recommend. I’m really keen to try the ramen next time, someone else ordered it and it looked amazing. The staff are helpful and friendly.
Lynn🐵liu
The food is delicious, but you have to wait for a long time. The service is wonderful, the staff also be friendly. I think I will recommend this place to my friends.
Pav Arneja
A funky place with its out twist on the Asian cuisine, TT delivered some delicious food with a great experience. The baos very amazing and the staff were friendly and really helpful. The service was very quick and the pricing was very reasonable for the serving sizes. Will def be back again!

Well I’ve been wanting to go here and we finally. Made the time. To. Food excellent staff good tables way to close happy to be a tight fit. But not so I’m hearing them chew.

All the food we had was excellent we had the “all in “
Perfect. Amount and great balance to the chefs choices

The sake run 10/10
The yuzu martini 🍸 10/10

Can’t wait to get back.
I’ll take picks next time
Oh the udon and chicken cold. Was just like back in Tokyo Haymarket
See you soon
Mi55Bee
Ordered their miso mushroom ramen noodles and fried avocado bao. Ramen was good, not the best i had but its flavourful, fried avo bao was weird, the combination of taste was interesting it actually taste better without the bao
Zero Cool😎😎😎
Had been wanting to try Tokyo Tina for a while so went here on Wednesday for lunch. The restaurant was not busy. I ordered spicy Chicken ramen and pork and kimchi gyoza. The food is average, didn’t like the gyoza. A pot of Kirin was $12 which is pretty expensive.

We decided on Tokyo Tina for dinner with my partner’s friends and their family. At first I was worried this place might not be child friendly, they have 3 kids (10,7&3). I shouldn’t worried in the 1st place. Service was great, waitstaff was very detailed when it comes to meeting our friend’s special dietary requirements. Not my first time here, so was pleased that food is still as good as I remembered it to be. Overall a good night at Tokyo Tina.
Julian
Came here recently with a mate and had some drinks and food, we had Avocado Bao and the spiced Edamame, there wasn’t a great deal on the menu for vegetarians but what we did order was really delicious and came out fairly quick, we also had some gin and tonics which were really really good here, worth a look if it’s not too busy.

Sunday brunches just got a little more exciting at Tokyo Tina with Bingo Academy - a solid mix of booze and bingo.

Expect a stunning selection of Tokyo Tina Sunday-only plates to share alongside bottomless drinks including Aperol Spritzes, Prosecco and beer.
Ruth Vo
We popped in here tonight without a booking and we were able to be seated with 30 minutes. We opted for the chiefs special menu and all I can say is ........you better be hungry!!!!!!!!! It was literally 12 courses!
Our favourite dishes of the night were the salmon tartare , the barramundi in dashi & ginger broth and the Yuzu donuts!!! Definitely worth squeezing in.
Ferry Gondo
Went here just for a snack. Had the pork belly bao. I am not really into it. I expected that the pork to be soft and tender, maybe sticky with thick sauce or something. But it came a bit tough and dry.

The bun was soft and pleasant with the mayo, but they were too small to acomodate the slab of thick pork like that.

Two condiments of gochujang like style and teriyaki sauce were good when eaten together with the pork and bun.

After always wandering past this place on chapel, often mistaking for dingy old office we ventured in after all the talk in town. On a cold Sunday afternoon heading into evening we couldn’t help but take the opportunity of it being quiet... quieter than usual. Everything we ordered can out super quick, even when the restaurant began to fill, the staff remained composed. The feel of the place is warm and inviting and much bigger than first anticipated. It was very hard to fault any of the food tasted that evening but was a little disappointed in the yuzu doughnuts for dessert, however the choc pudding made up for it. Will definitely be back! Although this leads us to trying more of the unsuspecting establishments on chapel. Although Tokyo Tina already has quite the name and presence!

Popped in for dinner for 3 on a Thursday night and the place was bustling and full. Luckily a table cleared as we entered. However before being seated, we were left just standing at the front counter a good 10-15 minutes while two waitresses finished a conversation, and they let another table pay their bill despite the fact we’d been waiting for a while by the time they came up to pay. Aside from this, we found our designated waitress helpful and attentive, and our service the rest of the night was good.
The restaurant is a medium-sized space with a nice bar to one side and Japanese anime/arcade game decorations throughout the venue. The tables, chairs and a long comfy bench are all well laid out to make good use of the size of the space available; though full, the place didn’t feel too cramped.
For food we ordered the chicken karaage, open california roll, DIY pork belly and beef rib baos, and the duck ssam (쌈 = ‘wrap’ in Korean).
For a restaurant called “Tokyo Tina” and being categorised as “modern Japanese cuisine”, they certainly seemed to have a lot of Korean inspired dishes and ingredients on their menu... hence why most people seem to refer to them as simply being “Asian fusion”.
My special mention for the night would have to go to the duck. It was beautifully cooked and flavoured; definitely one of the best dishes of duck I’ve had in a long time. The rest of the food was good, but nothing amazing or as memorable. The DIY portion of the baos, duck ssam and the open california roll will amuse some, but I feel like it’d be good if there was an option for them to come out ‘made’. The novelty has the potential to be worn down very thin depending on the size and type of group you’re dining with, and the time you have.

Great place! Came here last night for dinner and had the banquet which was better than most places for the banquet I have been to recently. The fried chicken is great and the Pork hock is delicious. If you are getting the banquet just don't be too quick to fill up because there is a lot of food. The desert was delicious - donuts with dehydrated mango filling.

Staff were 5/5 - knowledgeable, helpful and attentive.

Would come back but not order the banquet, probably more from the raw fish side with a main or 2.
Eatandbooze
I've been here a few times during my lunch break and I love it. The food is really yum and the customer service has always been really lovely, helpful and attentive. Anywhere that makes you feel comfortable whilst riding solo and has awesome, quick food is a winner by me.
Anna Mac
Great food and service, waiters also had awesome recommendations and a wide variety to chose from. Also lovely sake and cocktails. A really great night well worth a visit.
Apoorv Malhotra
Fantastic place with excellent Japanese fusion food. We went here in a group of 15 and the food and service were impeccable. The place has some really nice Japanese beers and whiskey. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Love Tokyo Tina! I live locally so have been a few times now and I am yet to be disappointed. We like to sit outside so I can't comment on the ambience (even in winter they have awesome outdoor heaters!) but the food and service is always on point. I highly recommend the DIY Pork Belly Bao and The Steamed Snapper Fillet. Their Spiced Edamame beans might be the best I have ever had (big call I know). Last visit we also had a waiter recommend trying the red Bulgogi sauce (served with Bao) with the Karaage Chicken and we will never go without that sauce again. Delicious!

The plates are design for sharing and the staff are really helpful with recommending how much might be appropriate for how many people there are. The other thing I love about this place is they don't just rush all the food out to you in an effort to get you out the door. The plates are spaced out giving you time to actually enjoy the food and a nice night out on Chapel.

Absolutely loved our dinner at Tokyo Tina last night. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and drinks menu. Everything was perfect but the DIY pork belly bao was the standout for me - delish! Very busy tho so make sure you book or be prepared to grab a drink close by while you wait for a table. They do have a very good system for the wait list though.
Chris Anderson
Recently dined here with some friends and the staff were super attentive and friendly. Food came out rather fast which I would have preferred more time between dishes but still loved the food. The Karaage Corn Balls and Crispy Avocado Bao were the highlights! May have ordered more than one of these haha

Service was great with the staff being very attentive. The food was good but not outstanding. Maybe just not to my taste. Very busy even on a weeknight, best to book ahead.
AngeLuvFood8
I was house-sitting in the area for 1 week and my friend who lived nearby decided to show me her neighbourhood. As alot of places dont take booking, we just tried our luck in walking in to find out how long the wait was. Tokyo Tina was our 3rd stop and we were lucky to be able to get a table.
On a Thursday night, Chapel street is pretty happening place.

Don't be fooled by the name "Tokyo Tina". It is not authentic Japanese food. They serve Asian Fusion food. So you will have to be open-minded to try and decide if you like it or not.

The unfurnished timber and peeling manga posters take you back to the 1980's era. The decor is playful and fun, with upbeat music which makes the overall vibe inviting and fun.

🔆LOCATION🔆
Tokyo Tina is located at the Windsor end of Chapel street and within walking distance from the train station. Parking is just awful on Chapel street. Took over 20 minutes to find a spot.

🔆SERVICE🔆
The waitress that served us was very cool. She was talkative and friendly. Dressed very casually and had alot of energy.

🔆MENU & PRICE🔆
When you first look at the menu it is a little confusing. Its like okay what is all this? Its a mix between Japanese and Korean with a modern twist.

The price is reasonable and it is a good way to order food to share.

🔆VERDICT🔆
I'm not absolutely wowed by the food quality.
It is a very casual setting and great place for a catch up over drinks and grazing of food.
But I found the sauce for the chicken too sweet.

the open pork belly bao was hard to eat. The pork belly was served as a peice of meat and you have to cut it yourself. It was difficult to cut. If it was sliced for us It probably would have been better.

The housemade Yuzu drink was refreshing and delicious! Thoroughly enjoyed that.

Fusion places are all the rage now!! I absolutely loved the feel about this place, the interiors and exteriors were inspired by Japanese themed imagery and gave the restaurant the charm. The menu sounded extremely intriguing and originality was obvious.
I ordered the salmon poke bowl, which was absolutely yummy and fresh, and the open California rolls, which was like a diy sushi roll with heaps of flavour. The ginger lemonade was a cherry on top to an amazing lunch. Everything was packed with flavour and excitement, I loved this place and I'm definitely coming back. Staff were excellent and efficient, and lovely. I highly recommend this restaurant, it's simply delightful.

Spicy chicken sesame ramen and a Kirin draught beer for lunch. Extra half egg. The broth is rich and creamy with subtle hints of black sesame, as well as a chilli oil which somewhat overwhelms things after a while. Noodles are curly, medium to soft in texture that clings well to the broth. Toppings include half egg (slightly under), julienne leeks, mustard leaves and a large, juicy crumbed chicken cutlet. Good portions, relaxed vibes, attentive staff - a bit pricey but good experience.
MissGenWhy
Don’t mind the Japanese-Korean options but overall, the menu is underwhelming, especially at lunch. The food is no better or worse than anything else that Melbourne has to offer, just at a premium price.

Sultry, hip ambience combined with great food = fan favourite. Guaranteed a good night at Tokyo Tina. Personal favs include the corn balls and beef tartare (which I believe has departed the menu 😢). Also they’re edamame is my FAVOURITE. Something about the seasoning makes Tina’s beans superior to all else. It’s also great for groups as sharing plates makes a meal super inexpensive - a big plus! Went for bottomless brunch. Drinks service was so slow that we had to keep asking for drinks. Same with paying. Food was just above average but the service was really poor

One of my fav places to head for a consistently delicious dinner in Melbourne. Recently took a group of friends here after we had hyped them up with all our talk of Tokyo Tina! Had the most lovely waiter (I think her name was Shiv), who talked everyone through the menu, made some recommendations, and even suggested a wine that everyone enjoyed - refreshingly positive and genuine service, I almost felt like telling her to join us 😂 The food is always fabulous with the beef rib bao, prawn katsu sliders and karaage chicken being personal favs. Ps please bring back the beef tartare 😢

Ordered salmon tartare as our entree. Looked fabulous. First bite, mmm wow! The yuzu citrus was a nice touch! Second bite and after that, urgh it got TOO sour.. my mouth is salivating even now when I think about it.. totally broke the balance of the dish.. and I thought the cracker would help balance the acidity, but they were just there for a mere crunch element.
For mains, we got pork & kimchi gyoza - sounded delicious, however, plating wise, they looked terrible. Served on a small thin metal dish that you would find in a cheap Chinese restaurant (actually Chinese restaurants have better plates than this) and gyoza was DRENCHED in soy sauce. The filling was so bland - where was the pork and especially, where was the kimchi?!?!?? If anything it should just be called “pork gyoza dumpling with a bit of kimchi juice”.. it was extremely dry too. Thought the scallions could maybe give the dish a something something, but nope. Totally failed.
Also ordered karaage chicken - looked fabulous and big pieces too! But when we actually had to eat them, having HUMONGOUS karaage chicken was not so convenient. (For first date goers, probably don’t order this). The mayo was just meh and batter itself was really bland too..
Last dish of the night was the snapper in some sort of a broth. The dish came out and snapper was NOWHERE TO BE SEEN.. had to scramble through the leaves and we don’t know what the little (too many) cut up pieces were in the broth that were just floating around for no reason.. snapper pieces were very small and NOT. SEASONED. AT. ALL. oh my goodness.. biggest disappointment of the night. Also, they put WAY too much chilli in - I love spicy food and I love chilli but even for a chilli lover like me, it was too chilli it made me cough.. and the chilli has ABSOLUTELY NO. ROLE. in the dish.. we agreed that they just threw some chilli in to mask the bland-ness of the whole dish..
Night was a total disaster and the cashier who helped us pay the bill wasn’t much interested in how our night went either. You would normally expect staff at these kind of “trendy” restaurants to be friendly. All he said to us was the price of our horrendous dinner, and “did you need a copy of the receipt?” .. no “how was your night?” Or “how was everything?”
I would give them a 0 star if I could.

Good flavours. Friendly service. Casual vibe. Definitely fusion take on Japanese. While everything was delicious, left feeling a bit underwhelmed. Average meal overall.

Went here recently for a catch up with friends. Lovely personable service. Great atmosphere. We ordered the corn balls, pork and kimchi gyoza, pork hock and a few other dishes and were so full. Very reasonably priced.
Always Hungry
Very good!
Nice flavors, great service. Really enjoyed the gyoza and beef baos! Will be back for sure

Okonomiyaki was super oily though and didn’t taste anything like this Japanese dish.
Please guys also give normal wine glasses :)

This casual dining Japanese restaurant was certainly a hit! The Caribbean King cocktail went down a treat. We celebrated a friends birthday and selection a number of items to share. Karaage chicken, steamed snapper, pork boa, tick tick tick! We ordered some homemade donuts for the sake of celebrating and the staff brought out a compliment drink for the birthday girl which was a lovely touch. Staff were attentive, easy going and the restaurant had a lovely laid back ambience. Perfect for friends or a casual date!

Cute little place with great quality food. We ordered lots of items from the menu to share and could have kept eating! Obviously being small portions we were a bit hungry afterwards but that's expected. Also a great selection of wine and great recommendations from the wait staff.Would definitely go back!

Really nice, modern, funky Japanese place. Lots of stuff on the menu. I recommend you go with a Feed Me option and get to try lots of their good stuff. The place is really cool too but expect a long wait (even for the area).

Great food which never disappoints. The feedme menu is a huge amount of food, great value for the price. Takes me back to travels of Japan, with authentic flavours but a modern twist.

Fun Sharing menu! All the dishes we tried tasted great! My favourites were the open California roll, the karaage chicken, the beef bao( finger licking good) and the prawn katsu slider! Very moody and trendy interior( lighting is not great for foody pics :p) . Will definitely be back for more!

Awesome place ! Waiter was very lovely and gave us very good suggestions, he was very patient with my very loud group and congratulate him for that. Food was delicious everything we ordered was finished completely and the wait between ordering and getting the food was very short.

Venue : 4/5 , music 3/5 , service 4/5 . Drinks and food a solid 9/10 . I’ve been here twice and it was exceptional both times . About $60 pp on our table . But we had a feast a a couple of drinks each . I will return in the new year.

Really really really good food 😍. We had the sashimi, gyoza, pork belly bao and potatoes side. Tbh I can’t tell which one we liked more. They were so yummi and perfect.
Impeccable staff, always willing to help and with a good vibe. Amazing environment, music and decoration. And simply THE BEST COCKTAIL I’VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE - the bloody Tokyo. It’s worth to wait for a table and I will definitely come back. 💯💯💯RECOMMENDED

Ambience: the place is really well-designed and hip. Staffs are nice and friendly from the beginning till you leave
Food: is a bit pricey as they target high spending customers, maybe. I sat at the bar as other tables were packed and I couldn’t resist a cocktail after my meal.

Atmosphere was loud, but funky I suppose if that's what you're into. Nice cocktails. DIY beef bao was good..chili or something could have helped it along. The Pork hock Saam was phenomenally yum, with the beautiful chive onion pancakes. The accompanying condiments were the best (pickles & chili paste). Table service could have been a bit more attentive with more water refills etc.

Points for: hip food, hip interior design
Dine Time: weekday dinner

The hype around Tokyo Tina has died down a little, but you should still expect a wait for a table, especially during peak times.

If you’re waiting, they will invite you to have a drink in the bar area, where they have an extensive range available, including cocktails.

The food menu is a mish mash of trending Japanese, Korean and Chinese dishes, made to be hip and accessible for the type of people in the
area.

I’m a fan of beef rib, so I choose the DIY Beef Rib Bao, which is slow cooked and tender. The pickled onion cuts through nicely and the guabao is nice and fluffy.

Servings are a little on the small side, which makes it a tad expensive, as you order more dishes in the end.

If you’re into your modern fusion Asian, give this a crack.

Fun little place on Chapel St, plays great old skill RnB. Definitely a nice place to chill with friends. Friendly staff however the food is abit of a disappointment, it’s average for fusion food but prices are more on the higher end. Tried it once but won’t be coming back for a while as there are so many other great fusion jap places to try.

Yes! Yes! Yes!!!!!!

5/5- I cannot fault this place.

Great atmosphere, friendly staff, quick service and the food....!!! Omg!!

I am still dreaming of that salmon poke bowl.

Simple, down to earth, nothing fancy... this place is a must visit!

We have been wanting to go here for quite a while and it didn't disappoint! We choose the "All in" and everything was amazing. Beef bao and chilli beans were a highlight. So much food! Excellent value for money.

Have been here approx 3 times, and had my first date with my boyfriend here - and each time it has been great. Service very friendly and prompt and food also really nice. I also love the retro feel of the place!
I recommend giving it a try ;)

I love Tokyo Tina the food is always amazing! However both times I have been there recently I have ordered the chicken mince ramen and I have pointed to it on the menu and then they bring me the spicy chicken ramen which is completely different and I have had to send it back and then wait for a new one. The first time this happened I didn’t say anything but the second time I went back and it happened again I had to say something. It’s a bit disappointing because the food is really good but I wish they could get my order right!
The pictures attached are some cocktails which were delicious but very $$ and the other one is the Spicy chicken ramen that I had to send back ...

Beef tataki I'm not a huge fan of anyway so best not to comment. The pork and kimchi gyoza was excellent and I don't like kimchi so well done. The fried chicken balls were some of the best I've had... big, thin battered, fresh and juicy. The BBQ set wasn't bad... I felt you couldn't taste the beef when you wrapped it up in all the condiments so ended up just eating the bits of steak. Service was pretty good overall... not a bad joint... up against stiff competition though. 3.5-4/5

Very impressed all round with this place! Nice fit out and the service was friendly. Started with Kingfish cone and beef tataki which were both fantastic. Steak with condiment tray and beef short rib bao also very good as was the pork and Kim chi dumplings. Only dish I didn't think was amazing was the snapper, it was a bit stock standard and lacked some flavour I thought.

Really good! Great food and awesome staff. Non pretentious which was really refreshing. Would love to try and get a group together for the Karaoke room, looks like a heap of fun.

Nice enough food and service; wasn't exceptionally amazing. The triple cooked potatoes were nice and the rice cake skewers with beef were tasty. It is best to share a bunch of small plates but there wasn't enough meat in most of the dishes. Probably just a good place to have a small snack before you head out.

Service is good and the food is great. Good range of beers and wines etc. Definitely order a heap of stuff and just share because there's a tonne of things to try. Also the ramen is pretty rad.
Would definitely recommend.

Tokyo Tina features a streamlined menu of Asian fusion food. We dropped by quite early on a Friday evening, so could get a table rightaway without having to queue up. The place get busier and busier into the night. We ordered 4 dishes for two people, as recommended by a friendly and very nice waiter: beef tataki, chicken ramen, pork belly bao and beef ribs bao. The beef tataki tastes very yum, but the portion was way too small for $16. You got around 10 pieces of paper thin beef, garnished with figs, pickled onion. It was delicious but not a good value for money.
There's nothing special about the chicken ramen, personally i dont think that's ramen at all, at least favour wise. Standout dish of the night would be the pork belly bao. It came out very simple, a piece of roasted pork belly, bao with mayo and one piece of pickled radish for each bao. It caught us by surprise that something so simple could actually taste very nice. Ah, they came with sauce as well. Favour combination and texture were both spot on. It's a must try if u decide to give this rest a go. Beef ribs bao was an ok one, probably need to come with a sauce, it was a bit dry for me and the proportion between meet and bao is not balanced - too much meat.

The price is quite high compared to the portion and the taste.

Went to Tokyo Tina about 4 weeks ago and it was amazing! The flavours were just perfect and the homemade lemonades were great. The service was lovely and the food portions were generous. I will be back for sure.

One of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne! Delicious food and amazing service!!!! Very fun vibes and cool interior!! The staff are super helpful and I would suggest asking them for advice on what to order

It can sometimes be hard looking for food at 9pm on a Sunday and Monday night but Tokyo Tina is open. Staff are friendly and quick to recommend suggestions. And they are happy to adjust serving sizes to suit. Favorites include kingfish cone, salmon tartare and corn karaage. The sweet toothed bloke loved the Yuzu doughnuts and approved of the craft beer list.

Great food and great vibe, my friend has been obsessed with this place for half a year now and I finally gave in and came by with her. Definitely will not be waiting another 6 months to come by
