Review Yellow Bird Cafe - Windsor

SOFÍA OVIEDO P.
I being more than a couple of times to this cafe, I was so sad when it was closed for covid and then, the other cafes started to opening and this one not! I was so confused, I thought maybe they won't be yellow bird anymore??? And here I am again, loving it as the first time, lovely service! Spectacular food and my coffee on the right point❤️thanks guys and Theresa for today! I'll see you soon🤗

“Good vibe” ambiance. Quick service. Delicious food. Appetizing margaritas!

Literally, hands down, no joke, my favourite place to go for food... I would literally eat this once a week if I could... I moved to the north side but if I ever come to south side again I would go here in a heartbeat... Their staff were so chill and kind, even my parents liked the place. Their fish tacos were my bf's favourite. Mine is the enormous parma's that are just so well cooked on a bed of chips and the chicken, cheese and salsa wrap, taco things... SOOO Good. Recommend to anyone coming to Melbourne as a must go place.

I can't say I would recommend this place for lunch as a vegan. While they do offer a vegan version on a wide range of their menu items, they charge $2.50 extra for vegan cheese which wasn't mentioned to us at the time of ordering. Our waiter was friendly, but knocked over our water bottle as well as misplaced our order. However they were quick to bring out the correct one. We didn't get any drinks because they were a bit too expensive for us. ($6.50 for a soda water, I don't know if that was from a bottle or post mix) When checking out, we were charged for the misplaced order, but given the $2 when I checked the tax receipt.

Before we got here, we thought that this is a Mexican joint but actually it was only a portion of it's menu. They serve brunch/pub grub dishes. The burger was a little dry but the fries are crunchy which is how I like it. The fritters are pretty good and not as dry as the other restaurant's. Food comes out fairly quickly too and they have extensive drinks menu including cocktails. Food - 7 Service - 7 Vibe - 9 Price - $$$,

Great value for money! Love the decor and music. Owner is so nice and all of the staff are really helpful! I had the southern fried chicken burger and a sweet caroline cocktail, both so good. Cannot recommend it enough!

I really enjoyed the mushroom burger and chicken Parma with lots of chips. You are not able to finish it. Beautiful and carrying staffs are taking care of you and you feel more welcoming. Thanks guys!

Yellow Bird is a Windsor institution. Great atmosphere and tunes and a solid outdoor seating area. Staff are attentive and always checking in on how you’re doing. So full marks for service. There’s a wide array of drinks that can’t be faulted. I’ve tried a few dishes here - most recently I tried the fish tacos. After reading some reviews I was expecting something pretty epic but unfortunately while still okay they were a bit of a let down. The soft shell tacos were made crispy, or hard whichever way you describe it and had been grilled with a pretty crazy amount of cheap cheese. Unfortunately this let down the rest of the quality ingredients on the taco as it overpowered everything else. Ordered a side of chilli chips and they were very over cooked. I call them chips as I’m not sure if any potato actually existed inside them post deep fry. I’d recommend this place but still trying to work through the menu to decide my favourite meal.

Best tacos, best staff, best music, best breakfast
Nathan Reardon
Food is great and coffee is fine. I love the music and vibe of the place. I don't like feeling like I'm inconveniencing the staff when ordering and paying. Not the most hospitable mob. Probably won't go back.

Fantastic place great food and the music 🎶 is fabulous

Great place, great vibes & awesome breakfast

Only one thing I need to say, when I walked in there was a song playing by early 1990s obscure indie rock band Pavement, a favourite group of mine, have their CDs, but never heard them played in public. You had me at that point! Aside from that, a most excellent restaurant, the decorations, the music in general, the food was great and the staff wondrous (I am still amazed at how they commit orders to memory without writing down!). Highly, and sincerely, recommended to one and all!

Been going here 10-15 years. Love that it never changes, as places around it get swankier. Food is obnoxiously good and so cheap. Love the staff. Best Bloody Marys on Chapel St!
Lucy Strachan
Even though there weren't many GF options, the service was lovely!! Our waitress tried so hard to meet my dietary needs. The happy hour red wine is awesome and vibes are chill
Daman Singh
Really arrogant staff, asked them to change the glass because one of the ice cube had a bug in it. Although, they changed it the girl just slammed the glass in front of me and walked away.
Judy van Blankers
I had the french toast with peaches and mascarpone topped with maple syrup. The best meal in Melbourne so far!!
Michael Atkinson
Great music and I loved the breakfast burrito! However, service was indifferent - certainly not the friendly and chatty kind I have experienced in most other Australian cafes an restaurants.
Tj Feeney
They have sorted out the smoking rules so you can eat out the front again till 10pm, great move! Was so happy to be sitting in sun out the front and the food was spot on.
Doug Beeton
My wife and I were visiting from Perth and this was by far the best establishment we went to. Great food and atmosphere!
Helena Ashton
I used to call you guys my favourite and would tell everybody to go. After my experience this week though, I don't feel I can do that. The service was awful and not at all inviting. The food took an absolute nose dive and I should have gone to McDonald's! The Bloody Mary really was just tomato juice with salt and pepper! The waitress allowed some people to join our table who were talking so loudly it was nauseating - certainly suburbia! We spend a lot of money when we come to your cafe normally $60 would be the least! So a bit phased about ever coming back.
Aron Pallesen
Great spot - highly recommend it. Warm vibes, good times.
Bob Lee
Went in on a rainy Sunday afternoon and watched the staff try to accommodate everyone looking for a table. The place went from quiet to very busy in 20mins. We were not overlooked when it came to food or drinks. Great meals, excellent ambience, wonderful service! We'll be back
Jacinta Maddalena
I love coming here for great coffee and breakfast when I study in Melbourne for the day.

Went to the bar for a few beers and ended up staying for dinner which was amazing. We had the soft shell chicken tacos, bean quesadilla and the chicken and cheese burrito. The quesadilla and the tacos were absolutely amazing, I would definitely return for that as it definitely some of the best Mexican I’ve had.
Great atmosphere and vibe, little bit alternative but nice for a change.
Not so keen on the same sex toilets but it’s a small sacrifice!
Didn’t take any snaps this time I’m afraid. But I’ll be back!!
Greeneggsandsam
Great food, really cool bar and cafe.

Cheap hour was a big tick but can not get over how delicious The Reuben was. Consisting of pastrami, sauerkraut, pickles, cheese, Dijon mustard, mayo, a brioche roll and on a truck load of fries, The Reuben is a must try especially paired with an $8 Pint of larger.
Also, they serve All-Day Breakfast?!?!?! Eggs Benny and a few pints - love it.

We will be back very soon.
Banditothegreat
Great food, great portion sizes. Maybe not the best choice if you’re on a diet but the food is delicious and comes quickly! If you have a complex order ask them to write it down to avoid disappointment, other than that it’s consistently good- a rare finding in chapel st.
Saurav Jha
What a wonderful place for breakfast or lunch! Love the colorful setting with outdoor seating. The chicken burger was great and the salad my wife had was very tasty. Will surely be back again!

This is a cool bar especially for after work drinks. But it really gets busy with the music pumping and the punters having a good time.

Beer wise there's a limited selection on tap, w Red Stripe, Young Henry's. There's Melbourne Bitter and a cider.

The service is efficient.

It's one of the few places that I've seen that still sells cigarettes... and coffee lol

I'm not really a fan of Red Stripe so I'm not sure why I ordered it. Mmnn maybe the signage? Anyway I had a Young Henry's just to balance things out hahaha

This place is worth a visit.
Lindy Lang
To start, i would give 3.5 if I could.

The food was nice and large portions. Very enjoyable and tasty. Had the French toast and my hubby the scrambled eggs. Coffee was nice too.

My issue is with the physical cafe... it’s like a dirty dive bar... although I have no doubt it’s fully compliant with food standards it just felt dirty inside... the environment didn’t sit well with me - although, it was busy so people must appreciate it.
Srslyfoods
came here for lunch and really enjoyed it. It serves the exact food that you expect from this place and the big servings to go with it. The best time to come is when you're starving and thirsty.
Hungrylittleshrew
This restaurant has a lot of potential. The atmosphere is great - unlike many restaurants on Chapel street - not trying too hard, but difficult not to enjoy yourself.

Could not fault the service, food and drinks came out extremely quickly, and the drinks were delicious! The Sangria jugs are dangerously delicious.

However, the food lacked something. We tried the Veggie burger, and it just tasted greasy, and the sauce was very overpowering - not something you want from a vegetable based meal! Further, there were way too many chips to eat for two people, let alone one. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing, but definitely weren’t impressed.

Good and friendly service in a very young vibe with loud music (not necessarily Mexican music). Burger was vast and filling with good taste, although was a bit too crispy for my personal taste.
Marina Ung
Don’t expect customer service when you come to dine here. We came here around 11:30am for brunch on a Wednesday. Unfortunately we were served by a waitress who kept going on her phone instead of getting us water & ice on this extremely hot day. Asked another waiter and he didn’t even pay us any attention. Food was beautifully presented but nothing special.

My partner and I regularly visit Yellow Bird!
The food is always great but can never finish the meals as they are quite big so if you have a good appetite this is the place to go!
The burritos are good and burgers always delicious! The nachos are good too!
Green Eggs and ham is my partners favourite!
We will continue to come back here!
Kirsty Haggerty
Yellow bird has a fantastic happy hour from 4-6pm everyday. $15 jugs of beer, $6 spirits, $7 pints and $5 wine! I also got a Bloody Mary for $10 and it was very good. They also do $3 tacos during happy hour, they are also really good and they have a great selection of hot sauces to accompany them. This place has a really chilled vibe, fun atmosphere and decor. I would definitely recommend, great value for money!
Simmyeats.Melb
A friend and I had lunch here recently, I have walked past this place so many times but never had ventured in.

Great outdoor area with lots of seating, good menu too. My chicken burger was really tasty, huge portion that really filled me up! Fries were nice too.
The Darth Zader
Great music, awesome staff and tasty food/drinks. I ordered their Parma with a Bloody Mary both exceeded my expectations. I also enjoyed the large selection of hot sauces to choose from.
ScottW
Atmosphere is good but was a little disappointed with the service that we received, was too relaxed and casual for my liking as when we gave some feedback for our food that we had they pretty much just made a joke about when we didn't enjoy our meal. Would go back for the atmosphere and the drinks but not the food unfortunately.
Jessica Kelly
Been coming here for as long as I can remember now and I've never had an issue with anything, the service is always perfect and relaxed, food always spot on and the cocktail always cold and tasty!
Diana Dee
Love this place for a drink, great vibe and outdoor seating perfect In the summer, great selection of cocktails and spirits, good to go to in big groups for a drink
Sassyfoodqueen
Loved this place! I got the SALAD DAYS and it was sooo nice honestly one of the best salads I’ve ever had i was so happy with it and I left feeling really nourished! Service was great and the food was really cheap as well which is a bonus. Unfortunately I didn’t get any photos. Only downside is the music was verrry loud as we went there for dinner however I understand it is a bar as well however I was struggling to hear the person next to me. I’ll definitely be back it’s a great place !
Jessica Cook
Fun spot to grab a drink with friends, some alright food, they sort of do a tuck shop style menu in the baskets, taco's are ok but not the best soft shells were very dry and hard to eat.
Mikaela Atlanta Fent
Lovely, friendly staff however the coffee and food were average. The bacon wasn’t cooked well and not enjoyable. Probably won’t bother again. Nice feel and vibe though.
McFoodie Jones
I would travel the globe and beyond for a good Reuben Sandwich - Yellow Bird didn't disappoint! This place screams Chapel street - loud rock music, band posters everywhere, funky staff - not for everyone but I seriously felt cooler just by being here! Food was tasty, fresh, served quick & cheap! Service was attentive and friendly. Downfall - feels a little grimy, like more of a bar then food venue. But overall great vibe, pop down for a drink and some grub - won't disappoint!

•Follow McFoodie Jones for more stories of me overeating!
Captain Tofu 💪🌱☘️🍀
Came here with 0 faith that I was going to find something that I would like.

Boy was I wrong. They have the most delicious salad.

SALAD DAYS
BROCCOLI, CUCUMBER, FETA, SWEET CORN, AVOCADO, PEAS, PUMPKIN SEEDS, SESAME SEEDS, QUINOA 16

Does not disappoint. Absolutely delicious 😋

Only downfall is the sticky tables outside which ruined my outfit.
James Roberts
Pretty terrible drinks and food. Don't order anything other than beer or you will be disappointed. Basically the hipster hang out south side.
James Grist
Great tunes, vibes, food hits the spot especially if the spot is a bit haggard round the edges from the night before. Nothing mind blowing, good portion sizes so I'll keep going back
Alex Butenko
Appalling service. I went here with a group of friends for goodbye drinks. We were met by a girl who asked how many of us were coming and after we said 'we didn't know yet, maybe about 6' she told us to just order things at the bar and went back to her usual spot spending time on her phone. It was fine, we still had a good time and some nice margaritas. At the end of the night though this girl took my drink away and when I stopped her saying I wasn't finished, she looked at it with disgust saying 'umm it's just ice in here and we are closing anyway so...'. When I told her it wasn't just ice cause I topped it up, I got rolling eyes... seriously, I'm so sorry I interrupted spending your evening on your phone... Guys at the bar were ok with the cocktails but not particularly friendly. I was surprised at the level of 'not giving a f***'... Ironically, most of us were people who work in hospitality ourselves. I do have to say, there was a short-hair girl who was super nice throughout the night. Overall, would obviously never come back...

Solid feeds, good prices and not bad service. Iconic place in Windsor and has helped many people (including myself) deal with deadly hangovers. I would go to this place once a fortnight just because I enjoy eating big portions. Keep being legends yellowbird.

After a hard night in the clubs I woke from the subconscious surrounded by taxidermic cats. I decided to march off my BAC level and headed for breakfast at a favourite: yellow bird. I decided to indulge outside and watched many hipsters talk about the woes of life. I have not many filters (apart from those at the end of cigarette buts) and had to join the 'local tête-à-tête'. I ordered death Benedict from the food outlet. Lucky I did not pass. Many sinners (save me father!) passed my table but I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. However the waiter did slop my jus d'orange across mensam (Latin for the table) and got my tight rubber jeans waterlogged. Overall I was on the hydration fixation and enjoyed my morsal. Praise him, father in heaven!

Lincoln ❤️
Love the salads in this place! Wish they would do more GF stuff as I mostly just eat the salads. The beetroot and pumpkin one is my fave. Green salad needs more flavour however. Great on Deliveroo
Paul K
The coffee was average, the chips were great. The girl serving us seemed to resent us being there and couldn't even offer a grunt when she brought our food out. The cool decor and good music goes a long way, but not enough to cover up service that makes you feel awkward being there. Will return one day when new staff come along.
Sally Waller
Great food. The Salad Days with chicken was amazing. I could only eat half so took the rest home. The Beast was also fab. Really friendly service and great tunes too. One of my favs
Steph McKinnon
Food is always on point and the vibe is always good! Amazing coffee too! I go here pretty often and have never had a bad experience. Staff are friendly but the only downside is that they do not write down orders so can sometimes get it wrong. But nonetheless still a Windsor favourite
Vinz Arena
I'm vegan and I have been here a few nights ago to eat a very delicious mushroom burger. The place is very beautiful, always with good music and very friendly staff. Surely, I'll come back!!!
Benito
Went here late afternoon for a drink with friends. The venue has a great vibe and the staff seem quite helpful and nice. Unfortunately though it took them 25 minutes to deliver 3 cocktails. It shouldn't take this long at all when the venue wasn't even half full. Perhaps they need to either put on more staff or see what is making the drink making process so very slow.
John Djistrak
really good deal for the tacos at the happy hour! They make vegans one to if you ask for it ;) friendly staff and nice interior design, everything i needed today
Caroline Beaney
We went here for the $3 tacos... Unfortunately the deal had ended at 5:30pm. Oh well we still had $10 margaritas and the menu wasn't too expensive.

They had fajitas for $17. This is really cheap compared to other Mexican places such as Taco Bill. Unfortunately the tacos were served in an untraditional way. I didn't get strips of stir fried beef, instead the pieces of beef were large and needed cutting up. Everything was on the same plate including the tortillas which made it awkward to assemble the fajitas. The tortillas should have been on a separate plate. Plus the tortillas were cold too - and I missed seeing the meat and vegetables being on a sizzling plate. It stays warmer for so much longer. On the plus side it didn't taste bad, and the servings were huge. But if I am going to order fajitas and I'm in Windsor I would probably go to Jalisco Mexican instead for their $19 seasoned rump steak fajitas.

The highlight of the meal was definitely the $10 margaritas!! I had the passionfruit margarita. It had the right amount of alcohol in it, and it tasted very nice. The margaritas are a smaller size than the margaritas you get from Taco Bill but the margaritas at Yellow Bird Cafe do contain a lot more alcohol.

The service was a bit confusing. We weren't sure if we were meant to go to the counter to order or if they would come to us. Most of the time they would only take our order/walk over to our table if we went to the bar only to be told that they would serve us at the table.

Also if heading here on a hot day please be aware that they only have fans and no air conditioning so it can get quite hot in there! The margaritas should help keep you cool though!!
Hungry Ronin
You shouldn't wear a brown belt with black shoes Shouldn't eat rice with steak. And shouldn't really serve, or order, a Reuben sandwich at a cafe which seems to be influenced with Mexican flavours. But I did just that...perhaps a faux pax on my behalf and I certainly wasn't sorry. The sandwich was actually okay, with the kraut and pastrami quite tasty, albeit perhaps not as high grade, juicy and fresh as I'd like it to be. It was accompanied with a mess of chips. Generous, but totally unnecessary. The Scandinavian (poached eggs with salmon) looked boring served on a plate as is, and wasn't anything worth mentioning. This confused Gothic-Mexican cafe with its random paintings on the ceiling and fake flowers perhaps fits right into the hipster Windsor-Prahran barrio with its eclectic interior, but don't take its food seriously. They certainly don't themselves.

Had breakfast for dinner here at Yellow Bird 😇
My 'indie' friend showed me this place (it is a very hip joint)!
The fries were real nice that we shared between us but my mushroom spinach and egg white omelette that I had was just delicious!! The interior for this place is the main thing that separates it from other joints in my opinion. Great location on the corner of chapel street!
FoodieCCC
The egg was cooked perfectly, I mean, look at the egg yolk! Service was great, the waitress was nice with warm smiling. Some reviews pointed the waiting time, and so did I, the waiting time was acceptable considering the tasty food.
BeakEater
Waited 40mins, these people forgot our order, barely any service. Will not recommend or come back. So annoyed by this place. The place deco was very alt and dark.
Hungry
You will either love or hate this place. Personally, I am not a fan. Definitely more suited to the north side of Melbourne.
Pie Floater Fan
The cheeseburger was just such a nice burger, one of the nicest I've ever had. Perfect pattie, cheese, sauce, and a huge serve of fries and a nice big pickle to cap it off!
Francois
It's the second time I come to that place for breakfast and the result still the same, a nice moment. I had the chance the first time to enjoy the breakfast on a sunny day on the outside table, had a Death Benedict and The pancakes, really tasty, the pancakes were that good that I take them again but with the corn fritter that time (view on the picture). The staff is really nice aswell as the ambiance of the bar. Definitly recommend and definitly would be back again.
Georgia Allen
Yas yellow bird! Been here a few times and went back last Friday and had chicken tacos they were so so so gewwwd.

They have $3 tacos from 4-7pm 🌮

This place has consistently great food plus huge servings. Plus it looks cool inside 😎 I like the mexican/breakfast/everything vibe they have going on, kudos.
Tomlovestoeat
Really good burgers and great tunes. Not much to choose from on tap but that's a minor complaint. Always good for a catch up drink with mates and decent grub. The coffee is good too 👍
Bite Into It
Came here for dinner and found this place to be a really casual place. In my opinion its not one of my places to dine here. Although I would for a lunch session.
I found the fries to be a little salty, slightly overloaded. But the burgers are the bomb!! Super cheesy which us always the best, as i would prefer it.
Spudsmcduck
I really loved Yellow Bird, such a great vibe. Whoever is picking the music deserves a high five. The staff were great but most importantly, the food was fantastic! I had an amazing veggie burger, but I was super envious of my friend's pumpkin and Beetroot salad, it looked incredible. Thank you!
Lole Lole Lole
This place is so much fun. Perfect for your saturday/Sunday recovery session. Menu is perfect for hangovers and is generously served. Big alfresco dining area out the front. 2x unisex toilet makes it a little bit awkward.. highly recommended.
Master
Take a second and feel for the Uber & Deliveroo drivers who have to work their way though this mess to get to the food prep area for collections. Not to mention the people who they're delivering to! Through that doorway (with the door open and plastic strips tied aside) is the kitchen. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck. What's the health inspector's phone number?
Tony Kieu
I really like Yellowbird, the atmosphere is singularly unique with the blaring rock music. Turning to the back of menu and it saying 'we like our music loud' , gives you an idea of the edginess of the place. Honestly it works.

The food is not bad and quite run of the mill, kinda like an Australian cafe for breakfast items mixed with a burger and burrito joint.

I'd come back again with mates for a catch up.
Coco Nieh
Had Benedict. And it was not bad.
However, we had an awkward experience. We sit under the air con, and there are some ash float on us... So we talked to the staff and they rearrange the seat for us.
Cal Egg
Overpriced. Poor quality. Ordered thru deliveroo and wished I had not.

This brightly-coloured café-come-cocktail bar is a Chapel Street favourite, where you can drink beer out of a can and embrace a bit of rock’n’roll. Then come morning, if you wake up feeling like a small animal has died in your mouth, try the signature Death Benedict at this retro diner.
Shayne Walter
Great value for money, friendly atmosphere and staff are very attentive.
Generous serving sizes with their main meals and coffee was excellent
Renee Russo
This is my go to hangover joint. Huge serves, Mexican, American, bloody Mary's are nek lev and it's cheap as chips. Always a large array of condiments which is a deal breaker. The outdoor area is vibing & great for people watching on chaps!
Christina
Lovely waitress served us. Downside inside is not pram friendly. Great pricing and selection I had the crab meat tacos, fries and lychee juice. Friend got the pancakes looked amazing but was slightly under cooked. My friend is vegan so its a great place for her as has heaps of options.
Byron Pakula
I love this place. But for me it is a breakfast hangout. A place with lots of hot sauce options! Good coffee. And great loud music. Each to their own..
I Like Food And Games
Yellowbird
Dinner - Hip venue in Windsor, nice food but nothing amazing, can be a bit loud at times

TASTE - Got the fish burger, reasonable taste, bun (brioche ?) made the burger seem really "bready" and thus less flavoursome, sourdough or other bun types would balance the flavour better. Burger options come with chips, salad or salad and chips, Don't go for just salad as the salad portion is the same as if you go salad AND chips

SERVICE - OK, note they dont split bills.

VALUE - Reasonable but not great. BLT sandwich was fairly small

WOULD I GO BACK? - As I write this I think of the comparison to Grill'd. Yellow Bird has more personality, food options and a different vibe than Grill'd but for food, value and service - dare I say it - I think grilled is better. So yes - if grilled was shut/not suitable. They do a reasonable breakfast/brunch here though.
Rickbigc
As a Perthite to have $6 Sailor Jerrys and $3 soft shell tacos as part of happy hour on Friday is unheard of!! The soft shell tacos (fish and chicken) were awesome and the music is my soundtrack. Pure gold!!
Jar-Fed
Love Yellow Bird breakfasts! Want some old school classic eggs benedict with a twist, death bennie is the way to go! Its a go to destination following any big nights! All the classic breakfast dishes with great coffee, you can't really go wrong! If you want something sweet the pancakes are delicious and a great serve, value for money!
Kylo Ren
This is a great place, with quirky interior and comfortable atmosphere. Food is tasty and not overcomplicated - I recommend eggs benedict.
Tangerine Sky
this place always feels like home. always great music, relaxed vibe and the coolest interior ever. like a slice of LA landed here in Melbourne! oh and the food is pretty good too!
Brungiel
Everything at Yellow Bird seems just... Average. The staff attitudes are a bit too cool to care, the food is acceptable although very simple. It's often dark/gloomy inside, with the music too loud for a restaurant.
Steve H
Edit - 16th April 2016:
Still a great place, frequented often. Just an update to inform that this restaurant/cafe doesn't deliver, but accepts pickup orders. Do note that even though they are listed on Menulog, they do not accept Menulog orders. Cheers!!

-------------------------------

Breakfast earlier today (Saturday morning) was a peaceful, gentle pace here at Yellow Bird, with the music at a more mellow volume than usual, even though the pace was still quite hectic with lots of people - just allowing people to be who they want to be, which is great. The service provided was fantastic and very attentive, and the food was amazing. :)

My wife ordered a bacon and egg muffin, with cheese and barbeque sauce (without caramelised onions), which I was told was delicious (looked great from my view too). I personally enjoyed the muesli, which was MASSIVE - served with generous amounts of fruit (banana, kiwi fruit and strawberries), yoghurt and honey) - truly tasty. Do yourself a favour and try this place out, if you haven't, you won't regret it (it's my wife's favourite local, and I can see why). :)

Also had a great time here later this afternoon too - happy hour is great (between 4pm and 6pm everyday) - $3 soft tacos with either chicken, fish or vegetables - if you love your spices, you're gonna love this!! Also great prices for drinks (as you would expect) - the Sailor Jerry Rum and Coke goes down well on a hot day. Enjoy!! :)

P.S. We also saw two ladies attempt to demolish a shared plate of nachos, which was HUUUUUUGE - they loved it, but couldn't finish it, great value!! Will be back to try it. :)
Fried Reus
When ordering the fries and nacho's make sure you have room in your stomach, the servings are huge! Also be sure to check if your food is hot chilli as they do cook with peppers! Cool place, with cool music, and fun food.
Vidhya Vinu
Lovely little cafe serving tasty meals! The sangria is a must - perfect for a hot, sunny day! The chicken burger is quite tasty and the serving of fries is definitely satisfying :)
Coco
I'm pretty much obsessed with Yellow Bird, definitely one of my fave local haunts. Such an awesome variety of dishes and flavours to choose from - stacks of all day brekkie options, and I LOVE their burgers, tacos (which you can mix and match - unlike some restaurants where you can only choose one protein per order) and other "south of the border" options for lunch. My biggest dilemma when coming here is deciding what to order! Very generous portion sizes too. Decor is pretty funky and the staff are awesome. These guys have got it all going on!
Emilia
Probably not the ideal place for a date night on friday night. Really loud music and a bit roudy inside. Waiting 50 minutes outside on a cold night for our dinner wasn't ideal. Not to mention the food was cold. Probably a good spot for a group get together tho where u drink so much u don't notice the wait time.
Kellee Park
Love yellow bird! Their array of menu offers casual lunch and dinner dishes from salads, burgers, Mexican, toasties and much more. All such good value for money, have always been impressed the the meals here. The espresso martini was delicious also! However; the music is SUPER loud during night hours, so be prepared to sit outside if you prefer a quieter environment!
EJA
Love this place, always consistently a good well priced meal, good drinks (especially the frozen margaritas in Tuesday's!) and proper service. Were locals and regulars and we love the place! Highly recommended for a chill vibe and hearty feed.
Avolette
And old favorite brunch spot on a lazy weekend day. The brekkie burger cannot be faulted and is perfect in every way.
Coffee is decent but not memorable though.
Christina R
Not bad. Not amazing. Great place to drink. Okay place to dine. Staff are alright, not too friendly - probably could be friendlier come to think of it. Breakfast menu is available ALL day - like even at 10 o'clock at night - which is always a plus. Their sangria is pretty delish. I nearly forgot that they have an awesome happy hour for food in the early evenings. If I remember correctly I think tacos are $3 or $4 each during happy hour. I had three - one fish, one chicken, one vegetarian - and I left satisfied. Totally recommend taking advantage of any happy hour on Chapel. Enjoy.

Love this place!!! Super friendly staff, great tasting food. It's hard to find a place that will take the yolk out of an egg and scramble the whites. These guys don't bat an eyelid and the food is superb!!

Nothing bad to say about this place. The atmosphere is vibrant and hip. The music is loud but tasteful. The food on point and great for the amount you pay. Do NOT order extra fries, the amount you receive is already massive. All in all, a very good place, i love to go to every time I'm in Melbourne.

Good atmosphere, lovely staff and food was delicious! Came here in as we were walking past and really weren't disappointed.
What we ordered: Breakfast Burger & Eggs benedict with Hash Brown.

Wasn't impressed with the food and the coffee. The food was overpriced. I had the fish burger and my partner had eggs benedict. My plate was essentially fried and a small fish burger for almost $18 similarly the eggs benedict for $18 was ridiculous. I have had larger tastier meals for less.

Extremely disappointed is an understatement .. The food was cold and soggy .. Staff were unfamiliar with the menu .. we won't be going back.

Not sure what happened to this venue, maybe it has done its dash or its time for a new operator to step in. I dropped into Yellow Bird on Sunday after visiting it close to a year ago to be left with nothing but dissappointment. The food was terrible the staff were worst and the music was too loud. A once cool venue is now a dated, tasteless spot taking up space. Lift your game!

for me .... nothing special. If you want to have some beer in the midle of chapel st you can go there. Place is having "different" design. I was there my first and last time.

Yellow Bird had my previous review deleted so that pretty much says it all. Unsure what the point is of having a website like this if the establishment just gets your review deleted because it is fair, but negative. Extremely disappointed. Will definitely not be returning. (Also, I wanted to rate Yellow Bird 0 but it makes you input a number.)

The staff were rude and the food was even worse. Worst cafe experience ever!! The chicken came out undercooked and when I complained the owner was extremely rude. The cafe seems pretentious, contrived and lacking in character. Highly UNRECOMMENDED 0 out of 10. Wouldn't want to go back ever again!
Lifes Too Short ...
All good for a random choice in Windsor. Dining solo ... long story ... but was looked after quickly on a very busy Tuesday.
One Chilli con carne and a cheap beer later I wandered off well satisfied. Chilli was a bit on the quiet side, but beany-tomatoey accompaniment did the trick and made the meal. Extra heat from lots of table sauces fixed it up a treat and voila one happy tummy.
Good vibe to the place too, music and general atmosphere get tack too.

Used to like coming here on Friday afternoons for a cider and some tacos with mates, until for some bizarre reason they took a backwards step in January and got rid of all their gluten free tacos. What is this, the 90's?! Who wants a salad from a bar?

Bad move Yellow Bird. I thought I'd miss you but luckily Fonda is just down the road and can serve up a much sexier taco anyway and doesn't discriminate against coeliacs!

I have only been here twice in the last two years due to the fact that both times have been a less than pleasant experience either due to rude staff or rude owner as well for that matter and also dreadful coffee . If you want a good coffee this place doesn't have it . ..

Went here for lunch today with my girl. Great food and value for money. We had the cheeseburger and steak sandwich both with fries. Will def be back

Average food at best. Very average brekki! Soggy 'toast' and overcooked poached eggs on both dishes. Staff were friendly but no one checked if our food was ok! Wouldn't go back.

GUD FOOD AND COFFEE. Great coffee and amazing food - definitely value for money. Very cool atmosphere

This funky looking cafe is situated on the infamous Chapel St in Windsor. This place is not the typical cafe that I was searching for, but as I went on Urbanspoon to find something different, this popped up with a pretty good rating so my partner and I thought we’d give it a go! The interior reminds me more of a bar than a cafe, with little booths on the side and a strange design, I felt like I wasn’t to expect too much from this place. I was however proven wrong. My partner ordered the Maple waffles and I ordered the Death Benedict. The Death Benedict came out and was not what I thought it would look like. Containing 3 hash browns, topped with bacon, two poached eggs and a hollandaise sauce, I thought it would look more threatening (and fattening) than that! In saying that though, I thought the dish was lovely! Although there were barely any greens on the plate, I can never pass up hash browns and bacon! As unhealthy as it sounds, I’m sure I’ve had a lot worse for brunch so this was a

After arriving into Melbourne on an early flight, my first brunch was at Yellow Bird Cafe on popular Chapel Street in Windsor , just a short walk from where I stayed with relatives. It’s a funky little joint with a brightly coloured Mexican-inspired interior, lots of outdoor seating and a busy weekend trade. As they are licensed I expect they also do quite well in the afternoons and evenings.

wandered around prahran looking at the shops and chanced upon yellowbird so I thought “yeah, this looks cool”. This stretch of prahran had some seriously cool looking eateries so YB had something that caught my eye. Would have happily ate down the street. Still, lunch! Kerb Appeal Yellow Bird has got a very cool funky vibe. The fitout is somewhat mixed, somewhat indie/hipstereque and the whole look is maybe ramshackled and quite appealing. That ridiculous fake flower thing is very mexican and kind of awesome. This joint is full of funk. Came for lunch but its clear the venue easily converts into a wicked small bar at night great looking menu. Its had a diner feel and diner-esque menu. Americana Tex Mex chilli beef burger with Habanero chilli fries. I didn’t expect the portion to be as big as it was and I struggled to finish it. The burger was succulent and delicious (see my charlie co post about cardboard burgers) and this was just great. juicy flavoursome. adorable as ketchup dispens

Combining an American style diner with a dark Mexican Day of the Dead “Dia de los Muertos”, Yellow Bird will excite and entice you. The colourful space is decked out with retro tables, walls hung with old vinyls, and a rockin’ track on the turntable. As they say, they like their music loud. If you’re stopping by for Tijuana Tuesdays you’ll find a full Mexican menu of burritos, fajitas, tacos and enchiladas as well as margaritas and sangria jugs. Any other day of the week, it’s deliciously Americana, featuring their famous steak sandwich, chilli burger and New York fries.

One of my friends is a regular at Yellow Bird (122 Chapel St, Windsor), so I thought I would venture down there for a Saturday morning brunch. We got there around 11am and it was full both inside and out. So we propped ourselves up at the bar. The music was pumping and the place was buzzing. It has a grungy feel to it and suits Windsor. I chose the Ava Amarilla - Corn Fritters stacked with guacomole, salsa, sour cream, rocket and poached egg. I added smoked salmon as well. I thought given that it was busy, we would have to wait for awhile, within 10 minutes they came out! Lucky I was hungry as it was a massive breakfast. The corn fritters were slightly on the doughy side and I felt they were a bit too thick and there wasn't enough corn in them. Apart from that it was an enjoyable feed. For only $17, it's on the cheaper end compared to other places. A great casual cafe to pop into if you're looking for a big brekky.
The World Loves Melbourne
Yellow Bird is a cool cafe on Chapel Street where you instantly feel relaxed and pretty soon refreshed. It's a different vibe to many other cafes in the precinct. At Yellow Bird it's like time stops here with retro and vintage fit out. Its the hang out of hipsters and the eclectic.
Hold The Peas
I would describe Yellow Bird on Chapel street as a cross between a cafe and a diner, with a bit of Mexican tossed in as well. Due to the old style tables and the just-a-tad-too-loud music, KB2 described it as dining at your nanna’s house where nanna is a bit deaf! KB1 and KB2 had dined at Yellow Bird previously but were happy to go again because they thought I would like it. On the walk from KB1′s place to Chapel street they were discussing what they had last time (burgers) and how that they would like to try other stuff (because it all sounded great) but the burgers were so good they might have to order them again. Imagine their surprise when instead of the thick menu they were expecting, we were handed a one paged menu, with all Mexican options. Turns out it was Tijuana Tuesday! We all have a slight addiction to fries or chips, so it was a no brainer to order the chilli fries with guacamole, sour cream, sweet chilli. Though KB1 did note that serving fries with guacamole and s

"Just to let you know that the nacho serves are HUuuuuge!" And she wasn't kidding! We could see from our window seat from across the dining room, a pile of nachos that other diners were having. So we decided just to get 1 serve thinking we can just order another. It arrived and I swear our Nachos $12 was piled at least 5 inches high with nachos, guacamole, fresh chunky tomato salsa, golden melted cheese and dollopped with sour cream. They used the most delicious cornchips that I have ever had. It was delicate but with a substantial crunch and a surprisingly wholesome taste to this so called unflavoured chip. Elaine and I were glad for the warning. We also had Salt and Chilli

Yellow Bird attracts a hipster crowd with its easygoing vibe, funky music (and Aussie band connections), quirky decor and fab happy hour-style Tijuana Tuesday

There is just SO MUCH variety and choice on Chapel street and any time of the day for any of your food related needs! Yellow bird exites me!! – birds do not!

I was honestly kind of surprised how much I enjoyed the food, and how bright the flavours generally were. I'm quite keen to pop by on a 'Tijuana' Tuesday, where the menu goes all Mexican with burritos, chilli con carne, enchiladas and fajitas…and a nice looking selection of margaritas!
