Review Tommy Ruff Fishbar - Windsor

Aditya Joshi
Tommy Ruff is a lively place with excellent food. They have lots of seafood options and some specials as well. My dinner companion had fish cooked in Thai style (with satay). It looked great My pictures attached are of my calamari with salad and chips. I would definitely visit again for the excellent food and the welcoming and friendly staff members. They have a few dining areas : outdoors, indoors and out at the back (for those of us who prefer to be in a COVID-safer ambiance). The toilet was reasonably clean. I was here on a week-night and the place was busy, but with no waiting time.

Amazing food and customer service is out of this world. Special thanks to Riley for the great hospitality, kindness and his knowledge with the menu. Keep up the great work guys. New regular.

We were excited to try the Windsor store after visiting Mordialloc last year. The standard was maintained and we enjoyed the Chef's Platter ($100) between 4-5 of us. It included lots of items including crumbed fish, grilled fish, calamari rings, salt and pepper calamari, mussels, and grilled prawn skewers to name a few. The seafood chowder and fish tacos were also great.

We walked in and got a window seat on the inside. The passion fruit cider was so good I had to get a few bottles to take home. Note takeaways are the same price as off the menu. We had oysters to start and shared the chowder and southern fried fish. Everything was really tasty. Service was friendly even though there seemed to be less staff. A good night out

Was ok overall. Grilled fish tasted quite fishy. We had to add salt to some of the dishes.

First time attending Tommy Ruff and the whole experience was great! Was welcomed by a friendly face. Staff was amazing and friendly. Kindly offered recommendations to a first timer. Ordered Chef's Platter for 2 and the food was amazing! Quality is great and tastes amazing! Would highly recommend!

THE best seafood in the area. I usually order via Uber eats on lazy days - I’m 1.6kms away but the order always arrives fresh, hot and delicious. My go to is the Aussie angler, as the pic shows is a generous portion with the Greek salad which is ultra fresh and sometimes 2 for the price if 1…massive bonus!!

Lovely seafood restaurant and friendly for doggy. Thumbs up👍. Worthy of five stars. Service is great.

We went yesterday for my dad’s birthday and the food was amazing, it’s a bit pricey but it’s worth it. I have to say the best seafood restaurant I been so far. The service was great and the staff very friendly and accommodating. I highly recommended this place. My family and relatives really enjoy it, it’s was a bit far but the experience is worth it.

Great night, good atmosphere, delicious food - seafood platter tasted so fresh. Great work Tommy and staff!!! Wait staff were great. Highly recommend.

I liked the Seafood platter. Some feedback: Teriyaki Salmon could do with less time on the grill as I thought I was eating chicken. The calamari was perfectly cooked, yummy. The rest of the seafood was spot on. Note: Would be nice if you could have the option to replace chips with sweet potato chips (don't mind a small fee) rather than having to spend full price.

My best friend and I are repeat customers at this amazing little place and honestly every time we go there it is incredible. The staff make the place, their service is above and beyond and always has a smile. Other than that the food is incredible, large quantities, quality and value for money. We will always come back for more. Highly recommend the barra with supersalad and a house ginger beer.

4.5/5
Super fresh and tasty! Calamari was really soft and well cooked, garlic prawns delicious! Grilled fish was fresh but not as tasty as the other 2. Well worth a visit, really good menu, has hunky dory covered I think.

I’m slowly working my way around the Tommy Ruff menu and after five visits, there’s nothing I don’t enjoy here. Some highlights of my meal:
- I almost never order drinks for weekday dinners, but the pear cider at Tommy Ruff is an exception. Refreshing and perfect for the summer
- Onion rings are awesome if you prefer the type with thinner batter. I would have preferred onion rings with a more crumbed exterior but my partner enjoyed this version which looked like potato crisps.
- Appreciate the thematic and distinct decor at Tommy Ruff. They use fish jugs and even their washrooms are decorated with seashells. Brownie points for creativity right there
- They don’t just get their ambience right as their food is equally top notch. I’ve always gone for the tackle box for 2 - comes with a good array of seafood and fries that one will struggle to finish. The fish itself is fresh and the batter is just nice. Calamari rings and fried prawns are also really good - the crunchy exterior is not too oily and very enjoyable with tartare sauce.
- At the end of the meal, wet tissues are provided (yay!)

They also sell healthier seafood meals such as seafood chowder and grilled fish with salad. If you come as a group, you should order the chef’s platter. Dinner for 3 would set you back $20-30pp. I would definitely be back - perhaps to try their healthier options. Thanks for the wonderful meal!!
*
Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ambience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Price: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Comfortable spot for some delicious fish and a variety of sides, from tasty salads to super crunchy sweet potato chips. The atmosphere and decor, complimented by the wonderful staff rounds out a great spot for a casual meal.

What we ordered:

• Battered flake with side of sweet potato fries/ chips and salad.
• Prawn tacos
• Oysters

They had a huge variety of items on the menu - oysters and fish were great! Batter was thin and well salted and the sweet potato chips were crispy. Although next time, I’d probably just get the fish and salad, as all the fried food were a little over whelming! Tacos were well presented, however I don’t think I would order them again, at least not the prawn ones.

Service and food are both good. The waiters and waitress are patient and nice.
THE HUNGRY CAT
I'm not usually a big fan of fish and chips but this place does it very well! Great fish and chips, not all greasy, very fresh and very tasty! Friendly service, great menu, plenty to choose from. Southern fried fish tacos were awesome! MEOW!

A seafood lovers dream! Tommy Ruff has been on my radar for a long while, and so when presented with the opportunity to go with two friends, it was a no brainer. From the outset of entry, staff are quick to greet and ensure you are well informed of the menus choices. We already knew what we were after today, which was the Chef's Platter- a very popular dish on social media which is how we found out about Tommy Ruff!

The platter had it all. Scallops, prawns, oysters, fish, salmon, fish tacos, fish burgers, chips and dips... All to which were fantastic. We loved the myriad of varying flavours across each fish- pan fried, cooked, fried, etc, made the meal seem so fresh after every bite. The flavours here are a big win, with the quantity perfect for three people despite being named a platter for two. You can tell the seafood is fresh here, and the ingredients used are carefully selected- as each bite left an abundance of flavours for you to enjoy.

Great assortment of seafoods, and perfect if you are after a seafood banquet. Great flavours, service, and an experience overall- highly recommend!

Food: 4/5
Service: 4.5/5
Ambience: 4/5
Value: 4/5

Overall: 4.25/5

4.6
Quality seafood
Everything I ate was fresh and cooked to perfection
Atmosphere was fantastic place was buzzing
Seafood platter for two was generous, was unable to finish
The southern fried chicken was exactly what I felt like, fatning, but still seafood!
Service was prompt
Will be back

Located down the Windsor Station end of Chapel St... A great place for fish and chips or poke bowl with beer. We have been to both the Elsternwick restaurant and Windsor and have enjoyed each visit. Worth a try

I was super impressed with the vegan options at Tommy Ruff!

We tried the TOFU CURRY, which was my favourite. So flavoursome, with generous amounts of veg and tofu inside. The POKE BOWL was also great!! With a rainbow of veg, guac, seaweed and tofu. The FRIES were cooked to perfection hehe. Would definitely go back and eat all of these dishes again!

The décor and vibe at the Windsor location is really cool too. Would be great to bring a friend or a date ;)
Cindy
The table service is absolutely wonderful here! Staff are pleasant and attentive. Our food came out all at once and there was minimal waiting. Everything on the chef’s platter that I had was devine! But make sure you come in with an empty stomach as there is a lot of food. The mini burgers were delightful morsels and the seafood was fresh. Really enjoyed the scallops skewer and the pan seared salmon
Dave
I’m so happy I found Tommy ruff. I’m all about fresh fish and healthy salads, and they have nailed it.

To start PRAWN TACOS - dusted in a chilli salt, and pan fried to perfection, they were served on soft warm corn tortillas, and drizzled with chipotle mayo, with a tomato salsa and red slaw. Perfect!

We also shared the MARINATED CALAMARI, which was so tender it just melted in the mouth. Served with a small mixed leaf salad and aioli, I was really impressed with this dish.

For mains, I had the GRILLED SALMON with a side of sweet potato fries, quinoa salad, and chilli sauce. The fish was cooked beautifully, and everything was really fresh and tasty.

My wife got the GRILLED BLUE GRENADIER, with sweet potato fries and a really bright and zingy garden salad. I had to have a bit of this - it tasted so good.

They had five specials on as well including a hot and sour fish curry, and a mussel dish which sounded amazing. So there’s something for everyone.

I eyed the SOUTHERN FRIED FISH coming out the kitchen and it looked really delicious, so I’ll be coming again for that for sure.

Also.. during the cooler months, MULLED WINE is on the menu!

Really really yummy, non greasy, flavourful food. Very happy when I eat here. The southern fried fish is amazing. Chowder is good too. The staff is lovely and really good service overall. Highly recommend 😊👍
The New Fave
It used to be the case that when heading to your local fish and shop, the only thing that wasn't fried on the menu was the lettuce and tomato in your burger with the lot. With the introduction of the likes of Hunky Dory and Tank, fish and chip shops have been taken to a whole new level - offering a range of healthy, fresh and delicious seafood options. Tommy Ruff is one such venue. With venues across Mordialloc, Windsor and Elsternwick, Tommy Ruff's menu consists of items such as seafood tacos, fresh oysters and mussel pots.

Always love this place when I’m craving seafood. Fish quality is amazing and the fish tacos are always a fave.
The only thing was for the poke bowl might of had a little too much mayo ! But it still tastes amazing
Selina
Great funky atmosphere! Friendly staff and the Chef’s platter had lots of variety. My favourite was the Mini Burger. Not my favourite hang out but highly recommend trying this Restaurant.
Vivian
Really good fish and chips that is of great quality ! Service is always really good here . Love the Greek salad , they give you a huge chunk of feta!
The Brunchabout Diaries
Just superb fish and chips! The fish was fresh and the batter was light and crispy. The chips were super crunchy and not too greasy. This place certainly cured my fish and chips cravings.

The restaurant transports you to the docks and is decked out accordingly. Service was attentive from the get go, we order a couple of apple ciders which seems that they have their own distribution under their name.

We start off with half a dozen oysters with a wedge of lemon and vinaigrette on the side, I prefer it natural as the vinaigrette can distract from its oceany essence. Not sure what variety they were but they were small and I do prefer them more plump.

The fish tacos were solid, held together well and the fried fish nuggets were crunchy and hot. They were packed and did not skimp out here. On the side we got a rocket/walnut/parmesan salad (because vegetables), basic and well portioned.

The real winner was the fish and chips. Not heavily battered but crispy, didn't feel oily and the fish was thick and flakey. The chips were golden and creamy on the inside, bonus points for the huge tub of tartare on the side. It's some of the best fish and chips we've had.

If it were more local this spot would definitely replace my local fish and chippery, not that it's bad but this was just next level. I'd have to try more seafood variety from here next time, there's just so much to choose from!

Came specifically to try this beauty of a tower, the Chef's Platter for 2. It's slightly different on the new updated menu, $85 but we shared it between three of us and we were all quite full by the end despite being relatively big eaters. The chips, calamari, prawns, fish burgers and oysters were decent, loved the fish wings, the squid, the fish and the fish tacos in particular. The fish skewer was well seared and the skewered scallops were soft and delicious. The sauces were very generous and there was definitely enough lemons to go around. It is a little expensive but for the quality and presentation, plus the amount of seafood served I'd say it is well worth a try. Shout out to the amazing service, we had waiters come and very politely ask us how everything was around five or six times before and during our meal.

Had a wonderful dinner experience last night. The staff were amazing from the start (especially Marnis) and super accommodating with us and our little pup. The sefood platter was delicious, satisfied our seafood craving. We ordered a platter for 3 and it was shared between 4. We were super stuffed!

Wandered in on Monday - a public holiday - and nabbed at table with a view of the street.
A friendly greeting and menus and water arrived. There were a lot of specials on the boards around the restaurant. After talking to the waiter and getting suggestions - I ordered the tuna steak with Chinese broccoli. After drinks came the food arrived and it was delicious. Well cooked and a generous serve. Service was friendly and attentive throughout lunch and you just pay on the way out.

Tonight we were looked after by Clinton.

The atmosphere was awesome, everyone was relaxed, eating and drinking and happy. We knew when we walked in that it was gonna be busy because of the line outside but nonetheless Clinton seated us in seconds.

The seafood was so fresh, full of flavours and was affordable!

Ordered: Sweet potato chips, potato cakes, dim siim, super salad, John Dory whole fish, oysters and grill calamari.

Recommend by Clinton were the house fish with salad and oysters as well as calamari. They tasted like they just came out of the fish market. No regrets.

I asked my bf to rate the food and service out of 10, and he said 20!

I’m so happy to have celebrated my anniversary tonight at Tommy Ruff in Windsor. There’s no other place I would recommend for amazing seafood and beautiful customer service! Will definitely be back weekly now.

Thanks Clinton for your hospitality and smiles! We fell in love with this place all because of you!!

Came to Tommy Ruff to satisfy our seafood cravings after scrolling through a few places on Zomato. We ordered the Chef’s Platter for 2 + and the foods were hit or miss. Both of us are quite big eaters and we barely finished 3/4 of the platter - seafood may get a bit sickening but we do recommend it for 3 or more people!
Highly recommend the fish wings and calamari, the squid lacked flavour and the grilled fish was a tad dry. Oysters were also very fresh although the size was disappointing.

Accepts EFT - No Amex

Food: 3.45/5

Foods Ordered:
Chef’s Platter for 2+: Overall 3.45/5
- Calamari: 4.5/5
- Scallops: 4/5
- Salt and Pepper Squid: 2/5 - lacking flavour
- Fish Wings: 5/5
- Salmon Skewer: 4.5/5
- Taco: 3.5/5
- Burger: 2/5
- Oysters: 3/5
- Prawns: 4/5
- Grilled Fish: 2/5

Service: 5/5
Waiters are very nice and polite - also very attentive

Ambience: 4/5
Clean and nicely lit. Sometimes a restaurant is so beautifully designed in tune with its theme of cuisine that it keeps you mesmerised... sadly it's not a guarantee that their food too will make your salivate. I found the seafood at Tommy Ruff - Fish Bar to be fresh but loaded with avoidable oil and barter to be flavourless. Though the ambiance is a visual feast. Specially notice the light bulbs hanging from fishing rods... beautiful

I came here for dinner expecting a great experience due to their high rating, sadly I was left with merely a good impression.

The customer service was poor to say the least. I ordered the Chef’s Platter for 2. I was looking extremely forward to having the two tiered platter placed on my small table, however it came out as a large spread instead which was a disappointment but couldn’t be helped as they were apparently in high demand for the day which is ok.

Next I noticed that I didn’t get the two burgers that was apart of the menu, upon enquiring about it, I was told that they had run out so they had substituted it for fish cakes instead... I work in hospitality myself and from my own experience,
I always notify the customer if something on the menu isn’t available and provide them with options or ask if they are still interested in the item they have ordered. I wouldn’t have minded too much if they had notified me prior to serving it.

Thirdly, they forgot our sauces. Yes I know, probably not a big deal to some, but after the missing burgers, I really did not want to hassle the workers more and ask where our sauces were as well.

The final straw to my horrible experience was when the waitress dropped dirty plates onto my back, ok accidents happen, but there was no apology. She said ‘don’t worry there was no food anyway’... there was oil residue all over my chair from what had fallen off the dishes and crumbs on the back of my shirt. Nor did she offer to help clean it up or provide extra serviettes or a cloth to clean the mess.

The food in general was ok. I deeply regret paying $85 for this meal.

The Southern fried fish was amazing. Highly recommend! Soft shell crab burger was also unreal, great service, great music.. all round sick joint. 🔥

Hella fancy fish n chip shop! Fresh good quality seafood cooked in very clean oil. Beautifully light and well seasoned, big portions too! Will definitely return

Had an amazing experience here. Amazing food, beyond amazing wait staff who were super attentive and accommodating, and good vibes all around.

We got the Chef's Platter for 2, and it has awesome variety. Seafood is obviously very fresh, but given the size of the seafood tier and that there were a lot of fried things on it, it did start getting a bit dry. It's also a little pricier at $79, which is why value for money wasn't rated super highly - but I guess that's what you need to pay for a well presented tier with a lot of variety. However, looking at the other prices on the menu - I'm sure you can get a decent feed at a good price.

Would recommend if you have a party of 3+ and you get something fresher to accompany it! Also, super potent (but delicious) Passionfruit Cider (Jolly Roger). Would recommend that!

Best sweet potato chips I’ve had! And I’ve had a lot! The grilled calamari was also fantastic and cooked perfectly, will definitely be back to get my version of fish and chips. Staff were great as well and very friendly.

ordered today’s special orange roughy with chips as well as black rice salad, seafood chowder and tacos. The fillet was super fresh and the chips were SO CRISPY outside and FLUFFY inside even after they got cold. I also like the salad which was kinda sour. the chowder was average level but the mussels in it were soft and tasty.
all in all the serves were generous. good service, lovely ambiance.

Tommy Ruff is my favourite place for seafood. I haven’t had a dish here that I don’t like yet. The seafood is fresh and executed well: the fish wings are my favourite side dish and the rod and reel combo is my go to. Oysters were so fresh and the school prawns were crispy and seasoned well. Staff are friendly too.
Laurence Song
Can not fault this place. Nice and friendly staff with warm welcoming at door. We had chef platter for two. The portion is huge for us. Seafood is really really fresh. Loved every piece on the tower. Finally we can not finish them and had to take some home. Will go back to try others. By the way, the drinks are very good.
Hello. Imnikki
4.5

Life's simple pleasure - fish and chips. Imagine a fish coated in crispy batter, that was flaky yet firm to bite and paired with hot and crunchy chips - yum! Tommy Ruff served up such deliciousness, and more.

My partner and I shared the Tacklebox for 2, a seadog and fried scallops, and everything, save for the grilled fish, was faultless. Lightly seasoned, not too oily, juicy and fresh seafood, and super delicious. The grilled fish was just slightly overcooked but there was no denying the lovely zesty flavours of the marinade.

The marine inspired decor and casual vibe fits the fish and chips theme perfectly, and even the water jug was a fish that make a gurgling sound after water has been poured out. We experienced the most wonderful service from the guy serving us, and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting quality and tasty fish and chips.
Sharon Goh
Came here during lunch time and we absolutely had a wonderful time. The waitress was very helpful and friendly, guided us through the menu as this was our first time.
She recommended some of her favourites: fish wings, salt and pepper calamari, fish tacos. We had her recommendations and ordered an extra fish of the day. The food here was so fresh and delicious. Will definitely be back soon!

Food:
Blue swimmer crab: Nice flavour and very fresh crab. There is whole 3 crab but only 14 dollars which is a good price.
Fish Burger: Crispy fish with spicy mayo. It is really full mouth of joy.
Grill barramundi: The skin is bit hard to chew and meat is not that juicy, which to me is quite important for grill fish.

Overall, it is a really nice place, friendly staff and beautiful environment. definitely will come back again.

We are regulars at Tommy Ruff .
The food is always delicious, freshly cooked and well presented. I highly recommend the salmon Scewers and seafood bisque- both Delicious!

The best Aussie seafood I’ve ever had❤️❤️❤️❤️Everything is just soooo fresh and yum!! They cooked salmon in 3 different ways, fried squids are so sweet and juicy! Strongly recommend!!!

We LOVE this place!! We have been coming since they opened, consistent and good quality - always keen to try their new specials (crispy barramundi with Vietnamese salad my personal fav), boyfriend loves the big baby snapper which is served grilled. Super healthy and lots of beautiful salad options to go with. Try their ciders so good. Service is bubbly and efficient and love that they give their own personal touch each time. THANK YOU TOMMY!!

Fresh and delicious seafood, bad quality chips (dry and not fluffy). Most staffs are friendly and good service. Creative design and comfortable place.
Long Black With Cinnamon
amazing customer service! Great vibes and cool fish water jugs 😃 we tried the chefs platter with some tasty extras and was a very generous portion so packed leftovers home. Really well cooked variety of seafood and flavours - scallops, teriyaki salmon, flounder, fish wings, delicate crisp calamari, crispy school prawns, fresh oysters, calamari rings, fish tacos and sliders, boiled prawns, chips, and barramundi fillets with salsa. Love it! Thank you x
Jasmine
The best fish and chips I've ever had (so far)!!

Ordered:
🐟 Tacklebox for 2: 2 house fish, 4 calamari rings, 2 king prawns, 2 potato cakes & chips ($38.00)
🥗 Classic greek salad (gf) (v): ($9.00)

Review:
Delicious, flakey and lightly battered golden fish with a pinch of that good good salt. Complemented by the fresh tangy cut of classic greek salad I couldn't stop myself from going back for more. Truly a memorable fish and chips experience that shows you that it can be more than just a 'convenient' choice. Tommy Ruff provides quality meals worth waiting for.
Although, personally would've preferred the feta to be more crumbled so you don't get that overwhelming richness!

The interior is massive, modern, classy and beautiful. Loved all the natural light and especially that extra potato cake~

Would definitely say the weekend lunchtime crowd is family friendly because the service was super fun and personable. Would highly highly recommend if you're in the area or have a fish and chips craving!
M.
I absolutely loved this place! The interior boasts a tasteful sea theme, and staff were friendly and attentive. I did find their "fish water jugs" a bit difficult to pour though, with water suctioning up and all over the table! Haha! Oops!

We ordered the Healthy Fisho (fish of the day, rice or chips, and a Greek salad) and a special of Barramundi (with olive tapenade and salad). Both dishes were very tasty and cooked perfectly! Not to mention large in portion size!!

Overall, an inviting seafood eatery (with other options for the not so fish-ily enclined!) with generous and delicious portions. Definitely worth a try :)
Renee
I came here with a few friends for dinner on a Saturday and we were blown away! The fish was AMAZING and I’d say the calamari was probably the best I’ve ever had. The restaurant is creatively decorated and the service is exceptional. It’s a bit out of the way for me since I live in Melbourne West but I’d definitely go back! THANK YOU 💖
Ignatia
Came here late at night where almost other restaurants were closed. Ordered the Spiked burger which is basically a massive yummy fish burger. The fish was crispy fried with perfect tenderness inside. Charcoal buns always level up the presentation of course. This burger was recommended by the waiter and I’m just extending the recommendation to you bcs it indeed tasted good. My sister had the Marinated Ocean Trout and she loved it too. Would like to come back for the Chef’s Platter for 2.
The Go Go Mumma
Feeling like seafood I suggested we try out Tommy’s. My big Brother had already chosen our dish, before we even arrived. “The Chef’s platter” for 2+ was huge, my picture doesn’t do it justice.

The fresh shucked oysters were bomb, the salt and pepper calamari tender, the prawn sliders were delicately spicy and the skewered prawns and fish had amazing flavour combos. That’s not even mentioning the other half of the deliciousness that was on this tower!

The only let down of our meal was it got cold quickly, other I couldn’t fault it. We had plenty of people second taking this monstrosity and my lord it was enough to feed 4!

Thumbs up for both food and staff. Tommy’s is a vibing spot.
Chris Anderson
Good spot for some quick food and had some lunch here. Mate and I shared the seafood platter which we thought looked super impressive. Heaps off food which was good for 2 guys but unfortunately some of the seafood batter was just not as crunchy as we would like but that was the only negative.
Josephine
Chef’s platter for 2+ consisted of Tommy’s fish tacos, oysters, grilled fish, skewers, fish wings, prawns, calamari & chips ($79). When the platter hit the table I was so surprised! It was two giant plates of seafood. Between two people, we almost finished the whole lot. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The different sauces that came with it complimented everything really well. Definitely good value for that price.
Only down side is that the food does get cold quite quickly if you don’t finish it fast enough.
Mish 🍔❤️
Amazing food and service. We had the barramundi special with the black rice salad and the Atlantic salmon meal with the classic salad as well as grilled calamari as a starter. The calamari was perfectly cooked and the accompanying sauce was perfect. Both our meals tasted great and had a perfect combination of flavours. The house made ice tea was also very refreshing and not too sweet. The decor in the restaurant was very cute and fitting. I would definitely recommend this place.

Came here last night with my boyfriend - what an amazing night! We ordered the seafood platter after seeing the pictures and positive reviews online and we were not disappointed! Everything tasted incredible and there was more than enough food. It was such great value for money we couldn’t believe it. Staff were friendly and accommodating, didn’t rush us and available if we needed anything - we couldn’t fault our experience and we will definitely be back!
Julian
Usually I shy away from chains, but Tommy Ruff has proven they can deliver quality food every time, it far surpasses my local fish and chip shops in terms of quality, although it is more expensive, but worth it.
David Hewitt
Absolutely delicious fresh no pretender kind of good food! Lots of fish and seafood choices. Loved our ocean trout with Japanese soba noodles. The chipotle mayo with the southern fried fish was amazing! Grilled calamari was perfectly cooked and tender. Lovely and friendly staff! Great value!

Went here for a casual lunch with some friends and decided to order the Chef’s Platter, not knowing what to expect. It was good value for the price, generous enough to feed 4 people and with enough variety for everyone to enjoy. Not a fan of oysters? No problem, they’ll swap them out for something else.

Food was delicious and did not disappoint, and I really did enjoy the different take on regular ‘fish & chippery’ style fare. Service was also fast and friendly. Will definitely return.

Tommy Ruff is my go to place for seafood on Chapel st, great vibe down the Windsor end with a lot happening around you with all the other restaurants, cafes and bars.

My partner and I regularly visit here during the week and occasionally on weekends, the food is amazing here. So much to choose from on the menu but our favorites are the grilled fillet with harissa yoghurt, teriyaki salmon fillets and the potato cakes. Great selection of salads to choose with your food, cannot go past their super salad (really really good). They also have a good range of alcoholic beverages to accompany your meal (corona please!).

Can get quite busy here particularly on Friday/Saturday nights so would advise to come in early.

All in all, this place does not disappoint and will find yourself coming back time after time.

Passed by a few nights ago for dinner. What a place!
We enjoyed the Chef’s platter, which was bursting with flavours with every bite bitten.
Our night was full of fresh and delicious seafood, and the service was great, with a funky ambiance.
Highly recommend to try!

Great place for a quick bite with large portions and although not delicately presented, was pretty tasty! Friendly staff and quick service made it a great experience.

Everyone has there local fish and chips store! I feel Tommy Ruff is a destination point if you want out standing fish and chips!
Not like your local, oil doesn’t stick to your food and feel ate tub of lard. This place is fresh clean and you don’t feel like throwing up afterwards, yes I’m sure yknow that feeling.
We got fisher basket that feeds 2-4 people trust for 2 people it was more than enough.
Galloping Gourmet
Had dinner here, based on a recommendation of a friend & online reviews. Both my wife & I thought it was average, at best. Fish was ok, chips were terrible (seriously go to a Greek owned/operated fish & chip shop to learn how to make chips). On a positive note, salt n pepper calamari was good.

We saw the Seafood platter on Instagram and loved what we saw. When we went to this venue with our friends, we were blown away. The staff, the ambiance, the food, everything was perfect. Would highly recommend this place to anyone who loves good food.
The Official Food Hunters
Came here for the first time and ordered the platter and my gosh it is value for money! Everything was delicious on the platter and the fish is just to die for. Scallops weren’t particularly my fave but the tacos, the burgers were phenomenal. Bit of everything and provides an easy seafood fix for a long term craving. Can’t wait to return and try the other dishes.

Highly recommend the chefs platter for two! My favourite parts were the calamari and fish tacos. Best fish tacos in Melbourne. Such good value for money! Staff are really lovely and give great service!
Little Picky Very Hungry
Brought my boo here on his birthday🎂 it was all packed when we arrived, the waitress was nice enough get us a good table for this occasion 🤗
.
We were shocked by how massive the Chef’s Platter for 2+ ($72) was😱. Food presentation was spectacular✨ Everything was yum and fresh esp fish tacos, fish charcoal burgers, skewers and calamari🐙🐠🦐🦑 Such great value for money with the size they served. But probably too much for 2 ppl to finish😅 (no complaints at all)
.
This is the place if you want some quality fish and chips, with wide variety of options in a chilled atmosphere🎏🍹Def Not a bad place for catch up with friends or a date night! Would like to try out the Elsternwick outlet next time.

Well, this was an unexpected experience ...........
We had received good feedback and visited last night expecting it to be quiet.
Not so, bursting at the seams with usual young Prahran crowd, all in local uniform (T shirt, shorts & thongs). It was a happy noisy vibe in a smart refurb.

The doorman actually managed to find us a table and provided good service all night. Not sure how he managed doorman and waiter, but he did.

The first shock was the wine list. Cheap, but awful by the glass, I sampled 4 - all truly horrible. Wine seems to be out of fashion in Chapel St with the uniformed young favouring cheap cocktails. It is reflected in the lack of choice for wine drinkers.

The food menu was confusing, but it had a house/franchise style that offered good choice and interest, again to the very young locals wanting to be seen with their peer group. Not so good for those seeking a more gourmet experience.

We chose market fish of the day, Orange Ruffey with coleslaw. Fish was good, coleslaw was foul. I eat a tasting mouthful and dodged it, girlfriend eat the serve. Not sure how she did this. But, she was verrry sick. The full bottle!

In fairness to the owner I have to say he could not have been more concerned or more genuine. And he had not received any other calls. But it happened. So we will not be back.

Good vibe, good service, trendy for young 20 yo. Poor eating experience.

Geoff Birtles
Being Delicious
Fish Taco’s and salmon skewers? Yes please!!! I love Tommy Ruff for a delicious and hearty meal. The restaurant itself is really nice and there are so many options on the menu. It’s not your typical fish and chips place, but the quality of the fish is amazing and it tastes so fresh.

LIT!: the customer service was great. A lady checked up on us a few times to make sure everything was okay. What I love is that you can grab some complements if you like, there's vinegar and salt in the side.

NOT SO LIT: first time having chowder and was a bit disappointing. It tasted like normal pumpkin soup infused with corn, though the serving size was great!

Thanks for having us!
FoodforThought
Tommy Ruff is definitely a place to satisfy your seafood cravings. The menu has a large selection and prices are really reasonable.
The flathead tail fish and chips were fresh, crispy and delicious. The blue swimmer crab, although wasn’t as fresh, was still pretty worth it (where else can you find a crab dish for $14!). Thumbs up too for the generous servings.

Tommy Ruff's is my new favourite place on Chapel St, Fish Bar is the perfect title as this little gem is definitely better than a fish and chip shop although don't get me wrong they do great fish and chips but they do soo much more!

It's the perfect place to go with friends and family, the sharing platters are overly generous and I challenge two of you to finish the platter for two. This is always my recommendation as you get a great mix of seafood and I mean 3 different types of fish, oysters, prawns, calamari, tacos, slider, scallops and the list goes on. The refreshing thing is that you never know exactly what you'll get as they focus on what's fresh and seasonal at the time.

If you're looking for something new to try go the fish wings, that's right fish wings! I'm not going to go into detail as it's more fun to find out for yourself but they are definitely a treat.

Now let's not forget the drinks, Tommy Ruff actually have their own beers and ciders as well as a fully stocked bar. My recommendation has to be the passionfruit cider, in fact I actually took one to our beer appreciation club at work and took home first prize (It was cider club that week)

So yes, if you're in the mood for fish & chips then Tommy's your place, if you're in the mood for a seafood feast then Tommy's your place, you get where I'm going here.
The Darth Zader
It’s an above average fish and chip shop. Ordered a mix of dim sims, potato cake, calamari, chips, and a salad. All were tasty with decent batter.
Marissa
They got my order wrong twice but they did replace it. The grilled fish was pretty good and the chips are tasty. Lamb gyros was pretty good as well.

Had a lovely dinner with friends. Tommy Ruff in Windsor is a hip and nice vibe and the staff are really friendly and have a can do attitude. The food was lovely and worth visiting.
Claudia Russo
The best seafood I’ve ever tasted, so full of flavour. Staff was super friendly. Will definitely be taking all my friends and family back here!

Even though the guys who work here are legends, I don't have anything overly exciting to say about this place...whilst the vibe is good, the quality of food is questionable. I had the grilled fish, salad and chips $17. Hunky Dory's serves the same dish for $14 down the road and is much fresher.
Hangry Horace
We ordered the tacklebox for two and a side of onion rings. The battered fish was cooked to perfection and the seafood was fresh. I enjoyed the tender calamari rings too. The chips were quite meh as they weren't crispy enough but I enjoyed the onion rings. There was quite a wait on food despite the place being empty. Service was friendly though.

Service and food was on point, loved the crab and chips were crispy af. Would recommend, 10/10 would calamari again! Frank Collins would appreciate this joint

DO: The fish and chips obviously. Best fish and chips in Melbourne. Loved the fish and meal for two. If too big, do the individual hook and line meal.

DON’T: Like Fried? Try the healthier grilled options.

TIP: Go with a bunch of peeps and remember to make a booking.

I love Tommy Ruff in Elsternwick and I now love the Ruff in Windsor. I chose the soft shell crab burger with a side of sweet potato fries and the roquette and walnut salad. The burger was delicious as it had a slight pickled red cabbage slaw and also having the flavoursome spicy mayo in it. The sweet potato chips are a good side to any burger. The setting and decor was much more appealing then the Tommy Ruff in Elsternwick. Overall a great addition and would definitely come again!

Good fish and chips with a twist!
Fish burgers are popular here, I would ask for a little less sauce in my burger next time! Sweet potato chips were a little dry and salty do wouldn't order them again.
Fishybusiness781
Great service , great fish and chips and value. Always looking for something fishy, came here tonight very busy and loved the atmosphere.
Panko crumbed King George was delicious and battered flake was amongst the best I’ve ever had.

I personally think Tommy Ruff Fish Bar is one of my favourite places to go for seafood. The price is reasonably and worth the chef’s platter. Everything is just on its right ingredients and taste; I and my boyfriend absolutely enjoyed our chef platter very much. Highly recommended

Massive fan of Tommy ruff and would highly recommend.
I have been back on multiple occasions and have tried the main platter which serves up multiple winners, the Atlantic salmon and flakes are a massive hit.
For starters you can’t go wrong with that calamari.
This place is a must for all seafood lovers.
Big tick ✅

Sorry about the lack of photo, I was having too much of a good time!

Food was amazing, the crab was a lot of fun and so well priced. Staff were super nice and the house chardonnay is really decent!

Thanks guys, keep doing what you're doing

Always have fresh seafood dishes when I’m here. The Poke Bowl was flavourful and simple. The portions are well-sized and the service is friendly and attentive. Restaurant is nicely themed and well lit. Nice place to catch up with friends for dinner.

Food was great. (Fish was on the small side but generous serving of delicious salad) There’s a wide variety to choose from the menu. We went on Fri night, it was packed & lots of takeaways/delivery, so took a bit of time for our food to arrive. Service was attentive & friendly. Will try the Elsternwick outlet coz I enjoyed the food so much!

What a place! Such a great casual restaurant, the menu is super extensive that I will absolutely be back again very soon, to try all the other different things.
I had the Ocean Trout with soba noodles and sesame dressing. The flavours were absolutely smashing, highly recommend this if you go and it is still on the specials menu. Tried some of the salt &a pepper calamari which was delicious also, as were the chips - can't go past chips especially when I have just consumed a healthy salad - whoopsie :)
Just A Girl Who Loves Food
Soooo yummy! One of the best fish and chips I've had. Great place, lovely ambience and fantastic staff. All the staff that served us were great to chat to and were very accomodating. Will be back there very soon!

Awesome spot for lunch, super friendly staff and casual atmosphere. Had the Salmon Burger which was good but going to go back and try the superfood salad as I've heard that's great.

As far as a fish and chip joint goes this is about as good as it gets. Starts at the super cool water jugs which are shaped like a fish and make the noise of a fish. Had a piece of flake which was thick and fresh... very good size and the calamari was char grilled, fresh as it gets and great size. Awesome themed fitout it really ticks all the boxes. Take or leave the sweet potato chips and potato cake... had a bite and they were fairly meh. Excellent joint

Great fish and chip venue with a huge variety on the menu. Good quality that you know will provide every time. Great stuff and good value for money
Simmyeats.Melb
Hardly have fish and chips but walking past Tommy Ruff yesterday thought why the heck not! Restaurant fit out is really nice and staff are really friendly and helpful. Ordered standard fish and chips and it was really good. Menu has lots to choose from and you can change the fish to another if you wish, I didn't venture far and just had flake. I'd recommend a visit here if fish and chips is up your alley.

Came here for dinner and was delighted with the meal my partner and I shared. We ended up having fish tacos (grilled and not battered), fish wings, calamari and salmon with chilli jam, rice + salad between 2 which was just enough. Everything was really tasty, light and very fresh. We also had two glasses of the organic Tempranillo that paired beautifully with our meal. The bill came to >$80 which is on the steep side for a weeknight casual meal but we were able to try a variety of dishes and thoroughly enjoyed them. I'll be back to sample the sweet potato fries which looked and smelt so good at the table next to us, I had food fomo.

Order placed via UberEATS.
To the peeps at Tommy Ruff Windsor - YOU ARE AWESOME! Thank you for going above and beyond. Coolest cats on Chapel St✌🏼

I've been meaning to come here since I saw it on postcards a little while ago! Stopped by with a friend on a Sunday, we both had the salt and pepper calamari, super tender and delicious, with brown rice and salad, we also had the sweet potato chips which were amazing! Really yummy dipping sauce too!

Walking in on a casual Wednesday night, the restaurant didnt look busy. Nice atmosphere and super friendly staffs. I had a fantastic dining experience here. The silver dory special dish was really nice. I also ordered one serve of grilled calamari and sweet potato chips on the side. Those were all delicious. I love it. It'd be my favorite place now. Highly recommend!

P.s: sorry Didnt get a chance to take a picture of calamari and the fish because I was so hungry and finished it all lol
