Review Jalisco Mexican - Windsor

Haydn Corbett
Had a great night at Jalisco. Took the family (2 adults & 3 kids), there was something for everyone on the menu. The staff were excellent, super friendly and efficient. Food was great, fresh and delicious, everyone at the table loved their meal. It's now on our list for great Mexican

My favourite Mexican restaurant in chapel. The food, service and atmosphere is absolutely fantastic. Highly recommended the margaritas, tacos and fajitas - Delicious!! Love this place!!!

Had the loveliest time here tonight - it was a cozy environment matched with attentive and super friendly staff. The food and drinks were quick and tasty and our group of four were completely satisfied by the overall dining experience at this excellent Chapel St gem. Can’t wait to return!

Absolutely lovely staff and the strawberry margaritas liter was SO TASTY and really good price. We didn’t think they’d have room on a Saturday night but they did and thank god! Amazing. Definitely need to come back and test out the food!

Ordered: 2 of the vego (zucchini, bean & corn tacos), chicken burrito and chips with guacamole. Overpriced for what it is. The filling in the tacos was cold and was made within 2 minutes of ordering making me think it was all already made before hand and sitting out. Chips were good and warm when you first get them but began to taste stale as you keep eating. Chicken burrito good but it’s more like an enchilada (had toppings and beans on it). Not bad, but won’t return. (Sorry for the poor lighting on photos was very dark inside)

5/5 stars. Excellent, attentive service and the best chips and guac I’ve had in Melbs. Fresh, astounding, served WITHIN a tortilla chip bowl that you can eat after you’ve scraped out it’s innards. Mezcal marg is not to be missed
Visual Candy
Great quality food, friendly staff, top shelf tequila.

Yay for Australia! We're getting more and more Mexican restaurants! But bad for Australia that they all seem to be doing the same thing. While the tacos offer the most variety, our hopes were on the enchiladas, which were just so-so. This said, the service was GREAT as were the margaritas, so it wasn't a total loss. Definitely worth the stop, but don't expect the world.

This place is ace. Eat here all the time. Make sure you get the burritos

My partner and I had a very enjoyable meal at Jalisco Mexican! They have a lovely, bright outdoor seating area at the back- perfect for a summers night hangout.
As for food, I highly recommend their prawn tacos. You get 3 pieces of tiger prawn in each taco, and a decent amount of chilli lime mayo coated over the top- super tasty and by far my favourite taco of the night! I was not disappointed by their quesadilla and enchilada either. Those chipotle chicken quesadillas were cooked perfectly and crispy on the outside.
It’s safe to say that I’ll definitely be back for their stellar prawn tacos.

😎 #Introduction
Jalisco is a more traditional recipe mexican restaurant part of the Windsor side of Chapel street. It actually replaced a Taco Bill which was on this premises years ago.

👍 #TheyDoThisWell
We were greeted as we entered and were seated quickly.
There is a wonderful happy atmosphere to the place.
The food is prepared fresh and in a more traditional style than some of the more westernised Mexican restaurants we have in Melbourne.
The staff went out of their way to
fill our order before our movie (it can depend on what is ordered).
This place is licensed and has plenty of seating - indoors, front, and also heaps out the back.
The menu was impressive, easy to read and creative in its layout and options.

🤔 #OpportunityForImprovement
Additional condiments such as hot sauce would be great.
When busy, the staff were observed sticking to the inside of the venue rather than the back. I (and several others) had to walk inside to order or engage with the staff. This included having table water.
There was a mixture of very experienced staff and non experienced staff which led to a variation in service, depending on who you engaged (perhaps because this was January and holiday staff were added).

😎 #Conclusion
This is a fantastic venue, and I recommend anyone (who loves Mexican food) to visit at least twice.

Love the decor and atmosphere at Jalisco. The garden area out the back is a nice chilled place to hang out with friends. Staff were also super friendly and welcoming.

However, I wasn't overly impressed by the food. I ordered the Chipotle Chicken Quesadilla which I found to be a little too plain and not hearty enough for me. My parrtner ordered the Marinated Chicken Fajita which he enjoyed but was nothing special.

For a Chapel Street eatery, the food doesn't exceed expectations in any way however I love the atmosphere and drinks here so would still rate it a solid 4.

Went here on Friday night. The guacamole was delish but unfortunately the taco’s were a complete let down!

The tortillas were rubbery and undercooked, they were soggy with meat juices and the “pork” one tasted like fish.

After complaining to a waitress about our pork tacos not tasting at all right (which were left uneaten except for one bite) she proceeded to tell us that we were wrong.

We were still charged for these taco’s on the bill which was disappointing.
Michael Garzia
Well priced food and a good night out. The Mexican itself it not amazing (but decent) although good fun

I love fish tacos so when I ordered takeaway from here, the fish taco was a must! Was I happy? Satisfied is the better word. It tasted ok, but it didn't wow me. The burrito, though, super awesome! They're not the best looking dish but I was impressed with the size and flavour AND it came with black beans and rice on the side as well! Talk about getting fed the Mexican way. Had both the pulled pork and chicken. Both equally delicious.
Go get a burrito.

Overall a mediocre dinner here. After asking if we were ready to order once (and we weren’t), our waitress told us to wave her over when we were ready but then proved difficult to get the attention of for another 20 minutes.

Food came out reasonably fast, the chicken fajita was good however the rice was very bland and the salad needed much more avocado. Would’ve also been good to have some sour cream or salsa with the meal.

Tacos look sloppy but tasted okay and the quesadilla was very thin and flimsy.
Burgers Of Melbourne
A great spot for Mexican and cocktails. Friendly staff, good vibe and a quality feed. The only thing I wouldn't order again was the jalapeno poppers. Everything else pure perfection.
Sophia
We come here because the drink specials are good. The food is tex mex which is fine but the portion sizes are small and the vego options are not great. Do a veggie fajita or salad bowl or something more substantial!
Eleanor Kate
We have been visiting Jalisco for years now, it's our go to spot to grab a bite to eat before our plans on Chapel Street. Fresh, delicious Mexican food with a great Tequila menu, we always leave here happy and satisfied.
@lukebMelb
Came here sat night , almost fully booked so we sat in the back part. Despite it being outside the heaters kept us warm. We ordered the chicken fajitas , the "mexican fries" and two fish tacos. Everything was beautiful. Can't really fault it. Very reasonably priced too for chapel st. Will be back for sure.

Went there for dinner on Friday night and everything we had was delicious. Try the quasdisales. We were all very full. The staff were very accommodating
Sarah
The layout was funky with bright colours and a good vibe for a Saturday night dinner and drinks. I went for the fajitas which were served sizzling hot, just the way they should be! The only downfall was the small serving size of the sides considering the amount of meat and tortillas.
Nicole Smith
Pretty much my go to place if I want Mexican food, especially if it's takeaway (they're available through UberEats).

I am not particularly a big fan of their burritos, but their tacos are perfect little bite sized morsels of tastiness! I recommend the Pull Pork w/ pineapple and pico and Chilli Con Carne w/ feta, rocket, pico and black bean. The Chipotle Chicken is also very tasty.

One of the menu highlights is the street corn. Oh my gosh, it's so good! Grilled corn topped with chipotle mayo, queso fresco, and served with some lime (do use it. It elevates the dish so much!) Highly highly recommend.

My only wish is that they stocked more authentic Mexican or South American desserts (they have a lot of chocolate dishes for sweet tooths). Otherwise, I'd give them a solid 4.5 - delicious, fresh and fast!

The little back yard is very cute, the atmosphere the vibe, the decorations and music are great . The service was also very good, the cocktails and drinks well-presented, but the flavours were not the best , the food could have been a lot better.
Tanmay
We had dinner here twice and were not disappointed a bit!! Food quality is consistent as we re-ordered the Taco’s thrice! Excellent authentic Mexican food, reasonably priced and fabulous service.. Quick, cheap good food with polite, courteous and thoughtful service..
The Darth Zader
Well priced Food and drinks. My friend and I ordered mojitos, corns and the chicken, fish, prawn, and pork tacos. I’d recommend the drinks, corn and chicken tacos, as they were delicious.
Vege Eats
I had the guacamole with corn chips which was really nice and a generous serving. Housemade corn chips were really crispy and yum! Also had the zucchini taco which had nice flavours! My friends had the fajitas and burrito and both enjoyed it :)
J Nguyen
Nice tacos. The chipotle chicken and prawn tacos are my favourite, nachos are average. Good drink specials and the black bean dip is good. Great vibes, staff are really friendly.
@twogoodtoresist
Jalisco serves authentic Mexican amidst a great and friendly vibe. The music is upbeat and really fun which adds to the experience. All the food we tried was fantastic- there really wasn't anything we didn't enjoy! Top dishes included the black bean quesadilla, the shrimp taco and the sizzling beef fajita. All cocktails are incredibly fun and delicious- our top pick was the chili margarita. The desserts (make sure you leave room) are great too- we tried the Toblerone cheesecake and baci chocolate mousse. Both of which were really good (and very decently priced too). We can't wait to go back and try more!

Nice place for few Mexican beers and delicious corn cob with tacos. It's a small place, service is good and people love this place as there were many orders of UberEats.
DJ
Had the crumbed, stuffed jalapenos, beef burrito and chicken fajita between myself and a friend.

The stuffed jalapenos took the easy way out and used halved peppers... also crumbed is inferior to battered if you're aiming for poppers. They weren't bad, but they weren't great.

The braised beef in the burrito was nicely cooked and but probably under-flavoured. About average.

The fajita meat was served on a sizzling plate and honestly, while the chicken was cooked nicely, it tasted a little too much of charcoal for our taste. Also, when the table next to us got the same thing, it turned out that we got stiffed on the cheese. Not terrible, but I probably wouldn't have wanted to eat the whole thing due to that overwhelming flavour.

Service was friendly and relatively quick, but the food wasn't really noteworthy.
Dam Burger
Always great to come to this old favourite. Friendly staff and decent meals. Great for group and big space out the back. They have home delivery too which is quick and cheap. I highly recommend the street salad with side a meat chicken or beef.
TillyEats
I never go out to Mexican it’s so easy to make at home, super fresh and very inexpensive. Although my beef mince burritos spiced with cumin, paprika and cayenne chilli probably aren’t authentic. So when It was time to go to Jalisco I was pumped, ready to be shown the world of authentic Mexican with super fresh and punchy flavours.

Loved it! Just had dinner there. Staff were really friendly and everything came out quick. BEST guacamole I've ever had at a restaurant! Mexican fries were great! Awesome atmosphere! Highly recommend and will be back ☺️
Miki Glat
The food is always great here, the tastiest Mexican food I have had anywhere and one of the waiters is hot af!!!! I could literally just sit in that restaurant for hours and stare at his gorgeous face and perfect arse! In fact I think I'll go there now and do just that!
Samara J.
Love this place. The tacos are really awesome and the staff and service has been consistent each time I have been here. The beer garden hidden out the back is the highlight oh and the corn is also pretty good too!

Got food delivered from here, as my fav Mexican place was closed... food was SO average...
We live in Melbourne, the food capital of Australia, have some pride if you're going to make ethnic food, and do it properly.
This is "Austalianised" out of a packet type food, nothing fresh about it - nothing Mexican about it.
I am Hispanic myself, so I can vouch for that.

Nothing special, you're better off going to Guzman And Gomez. That's WAY better.
Stephanie Papazois
Came for here dinner on a Sunday: Service was really friendly, and the place had a nice ambience and is pretty laid back. Food came out pretty quickly after ordering, but they weren't too busy. I noticed they had a big beer garden out the back so I imagine it is packed on the weekends. The menu is pretty small, but they had a nice variety.. I ordered the chicken burrito which was a pretty indulgent , it was smothered in cheese with a side of beans and rice. It was very filling and quite a big portion. It was pretty tasty and the chicken filling inside the burrito was very soft and there was plenty of meat inside.

Tonight was a real disappointment. Waited over 90 minutes for our Oder. Ordered on Menulog and when I called to see where our food was I was told it wasn't in the system. Had to call Menulog to get it sorted out. Shame really, their food is always on point
Melbourne Food Freak
To be honest, their food was kinda meh, but the margaritas were pretty dayum good. Actually the staffs were super friendly, the food was a bit slow to come.. It's not super pricey but for the money we have paid I'd rather go to fonda. End of story.
Good Food Good Mood
My hobbies include eating and complaining I'm getting fat. Sadly this place was not worth getting fat for. I desperately wanted it to be because I was dying over the fit out. There's a super cute courtyard, lots of candles creating a really intimate atmosphere, bright colours, heaps of skulls, plenty of love giving to the set up- not so much to the food. We got the nachos, slow cooked beef burrito and a pulled chicken enchilada. Nothing terribly wrong with it but that very basic food court type Mexican food ill befitting of the decor and pricing. Reviews on Zomato are all very positive so I'm second guessing whether I judged it too harshly but I think it has more style than substance
The City Lane
Jalisco Mexican in Windsor is named after the Mexican state which gave birth to many things that we associate with Mexico today – mariachi, tequila, and birria just to name a few. Husband and wife team Ali and Rebecca Kartel created Jalisco simply as a place where they could share their love of Mexican food with others, and to that point the menu contains a variety of interesting dishes.
Gastrology
Nestled in the-up-and-coming foodie end of Chapel Street, the eatery is a great taqueria for gringos locos to get their fill of tacos and tequila. . The menu boasts authentic and earthy Mexican fare made using fresh seasonal produce alongside delicious cocktails. Both particularly great to enjoy in their airy rear beer garden.
Real_forking_diet
Very pleasant mexican bar restaurant in Windsor area we tried a few of their stand out dishes, and it was delicious 😋 my favourite dish was the nachos with fresh guacamole!! Totally on point 👌 everything was tasty special mention for the deserts, very creamy and chocolaty 😻

We found out that Jalisco Mexican had recently joined Chapel street so we went down to check it out!

Their menu offers a range of dishes including nachos, tacos, burritos, enchiladas & fajitas just to name a few. The standout for us was definitely the prawn tacos - juicy prawns that were well paired with the cabbage & chilli lime mayo. Would love to see a little more seasoning on the Mexican chips though!

They also serve a number of colourful drinks if you're just looking for a relaxed atmosphere to hang out with your friends. Overall, we had a great experience - friendly staff and Mexican food, what more could you ask for?!

Check us out on Instagram (@melbfoodbaby) to see more of our reviews!

Jalisco Mexican restaurant is yet another hip cafe located up the foodie end of Chapel Street in Windsor. Offering a Mexican experience in their relaxed and rustic venue, complete with a tequila bar near the entrance, a beer garden out the back and a private dining room for up to 30 people, this restaurant can seemingly handle just about anything.
Cacti Eats
Had a nice looking menu, cute decor and a friendly waitress hence the 3 stars... We decided to give it a go because as well as that they had cute seats out the front and my boyfriend and I love a bit of people watching. We were seated and given menus by the waitress and as she was going through the drinks menu another man flew over and said that the table was reserved... despite there being a lack of "reserved" sign. got moved to the outdoor beer garden which would have been nice but had no one in it so atmosphere was lacking. We work in hospitality so guessed that those tables weren't reserved but he would like a larger party and bigger tab sitting there...But when your restaurant is dead let the couple sit where they want! They just cheated themselves out of possibly $60 worth of dinner and drinks because we walked out

5/5 - I'm pregnant and craving Mexican so no word of a lie here I've been scoffing this 5 days in a row 😂😂 Not many photos as unfortunately when we get delivery we scoff and don't care about taking pics.

Delivery is on the minute they advise - never early never late. Really consistent.

The chicken quesadilla is the best value thing around at $8 and it's got the most amazing flavour. Really cheesy.

The $7 beef enchilada is amazing too. So much meat. So tasty. Love the sauce and flavour.

Guacamole is delicious and I hate coriander and I've been trying to eat it as my palates changed and it's bearable - but if you really really really hate coriander this dip is full of it. Corn chips are delicious here and lots of salt.

Chicken fajitas are full of an adobo smoky flavour and lots of capsicum and onion. Served with a rice (toddler loves the rice) and comes with salad.

Never ever have we had a bad meal here. Ever. Love this place. We order through eatnow - highly recommend.
Selina
Cosy Mexican restaurant with good service and great food. A trendy little place to hang out with friends & family. Though fans would help on hot Melb nights!

The atmosphere, decor and staff 4/5.
The food not as great.
The soft taco shells broke when you picked them up and weren't tasty. Some of the tacos lacked something maybe sauce/salsa as it was a bit dry.
The corn was a large portion but should be cut in half to make it easier to eat.
The sweet potato chips were great.
An average meal.
Lily Halster
Food and drinks are always great, really nice venues, good ambience and reasonably priced. Only thing that lets the venue down is the younger male bartender who's been exceedingly rude every time I've been in. Unlikely to comeback to Jalisco because of this.
Leigh Hancock
Okay, not great. Three of us had the fajitas and one had the burrito. When we turned up we were ordered to move tables with no explanation. Very strange. Good was okay but no sauce and a miserly number of tortillas with our fajitas. These things must be 50c, why skimp?
Little Jerry Seinfeld
Ordered for the first time tonight. Really disappointed. Overpriced, took too long to arrive and then was really underwhelming in terms of flavour and preparation. Melbourne generally is crying out for someone to do Mexican food well that has a price point to match.
GStram
A pretty easy going place with decent food. Not fancy but pretty good. You pay the same as you do at Fonda for food but not as good quality etc. Still I have been there twice and liked the food enough to go again.
Verity Gresswell
A good little Mexican place but don't expect great things. We waited ages for our food on a Saturday night. It was still fresh but they had separate waiters take drink and food orders, which was a bit weird. Good cocktails and fish bowls.
Jesse Sharp
Went here just for a casual dinner with Vegan friend. We both had very tasty meals and a beer at a reasonable price. Service was quick and friendly.
Hungry Ronin
Neither outstanding nor bad; just another Mexican place in competition with the myriad of food outlets in the surrounds. I do like the soft lighting and atmos of Jalisco, an improvement from the Taco Bill the venue once was. The food was simple, fresh and unpretentious, albeit I found them to be generally bland. The tacos had a good selection, albeit it was a bit of a hit and miss depending on which you order.
Laura
I have only ordered takeaway but will definitely be going in to check out the restaurant after such great food!
Tried the tacos and they are a good size with loads of filling the prawn is amazeballs!! And the corn is to die for!!! My new fav Mexican restaurant go visit for sure!
Caroline Beaney
I was really impressed with the Beef Fajitas served at Jalisco Mexican. At $19 they were the cheapest fajitas I've ever ordered. The fajitas were very flavoursome and slightly spicy.

The margaritas are $14 each or $9 for a frozen margarita. Lately I've had some really poor cocktails/margaritas but these definitely had quite a lot of punch in them! You could definitely taste the alcohol! Out of all the margaritas I had I would recommend the frozen margaritas. They are a reasonable size.

This place is perfect on a winter's night - especially if you can get a table right next to the fireplace!
Julian
Ordered delivery from these guys tonight. Had the spinach and potato enchiladas, they were delicious and came with an ample amount of rice and black beans. It took 60 minutes to arrive which was the recommended time given. I would order from these guys again considering price to quality/quantity ratio!
A. Chan
It was a pretty average meal. The fish tacos were nicer than the pork and beef tacos. Service was a bit slow and inattentive, so you could probably give this a miss.
World In A Bite
Great Mexican food but the chicken taco was really soaky 😞 ... Beef burrito was delicious ... Quesadilla too - bland , but this is so Mexican ...Mexican food is actually quite bland and refreshing ... The authentic so called nacho (nacho is American) is bland with white cheese & fresh onions! But good vibe & drink place!
Cass
Best fajitas I've had in Australia, very close to Mexican food I have had in the US / Mexico. Service is great and prices reasonable........
Champagne_supernova
Decent, good value Mexican food at the Windsor end of Chapel Street. The fajitas were generous and tasty, as were the jalapeno poppers and enchiladas. The prawn tacos would have been fantastic had the prawns not been completely charred on one side. The service was maybe a bit too eager with the waiter coming to remove drinks and plates before we were finished. That said, I will be back next time I need a local Mexican hit.
Bedazzlar
Great service, tasty food and excellent atmosphere. The jalapeño poppers were a highlight. Overall excellent Mexican experience. We will be back!
Boaz Gilboa
Omg. Seriously good food. Very generous portions of delicious food. I have never seen so many prawns on fajita before.
Super friendly staff too

Decided to give this place a try and highly disappointed.

Ordered 3 dishes and waited what felt like an exsessive amount of time for the food to come out. (only 2 other tables seated.)

Out of the three meals only one came out as ordered
Was then a struggle to explain to the waitress that what she had bought out was incorrect.

Tacos were good, guac had no flavour and was over priced.

Paid for meal to then realise we had been over charged.

All in all, horrible dining experience and we wont be going back.
Lena Nguyen
This place has great potential and is a cute place for dates and groups of friends for a casual catch up.
Decor is funky, with nice warm ambient lighting, music was fresh and not too loud ranged from hip hop to Latino funk. With the mirrors, candles and street art this place definitely has "the vibe".

We had 6 meals all were positive and well portioned, stand outs being fajitas and enchiladas.
Chicken enchiladas (pictured $17.5 for 2) covered in cheese, chicken was moist succulent pieces of thigh and it came with beans and rice. Fajitas were also really great portion and flavourful and came on sizzling plate and side plate of rice and guac. Got the sizzling rump steak (pictured $19 for 4) and the chicken (pictured $19 for 4). Other friend got 3 tacos, which was enough for a main, all juicy and tortillas were soft and fresh. Some slight misses was the large nachoes for $21 wasn't that big and the bean and avocado salad had very few beans like actually 10 beans and was mainly avocado which I suppose isn't that bad... :P
Lastly the biggest niggle I had with this place was it took 40 minutes to order and they kind of ignored us for the last 15 minutes of that 40 because we had to go from trying to make eye contact to just holding out arm in the air for 5 minutes and then it took 50 minutes for our food to come out. The kitchen must of been backed up because it seemed everyone's food came out at the same time in one wave. Luckily we didn't mind with the wait but if you're on Chapel for a quick bite this place probably isn't it.
Sweet And Sour Fork
Looking back, I thought my meal at Jalisco Mexican was quite an enjoyable one. In terms of the food, there were some major hits and some near misses, but overall the food ranked positively. What really sets Jalisco apart is the gorgeous ambience, especially in the beer garden on a warm day. It’s a great choice for a fun night out with a group, as the drinks are plenty, and the food is made to share.

The husband and wife run restaurant is named after the largest state of Mexico, which is also the birthplace of tequila!. The name Jalisco also has the added bonus of including owner Ali Kartel’s name in it. Ali has over 20 years experience working in many restaurants in London and Melbourne as a self-taught chef and restaurant manager.
DAMMIT JANET I LOVE FOOD
Not only does this place offer authentic Mexican food, they also offer an impressive selection of tequilas (90 so far)! There is no doubt that the team behind Jalisco Mexican love their tequila, so much so that they named this place after the most popular tequila producing state in Mexico. According to Mexican law, only Jalisco and limited regions in surrounding states are able to produce tequila.
James Glover
Came across this place by accident, but turned out to be AMAZING!! The Tequila-Lime Tiger Prawns were the highlight, plus the Nachos were pretty good too. The restaurant is warm and cosy, with staff friendly. Also Coppers Pint is only 6 bucks - score!
Foodie83
Extremely disappointing experience. Was looking forward to finding a New Mexican restaurant (im a big mexican fan) but this was terrible. Service was poor (eg waiter walked off in the middle of our order - though not due to rudeness but more absent-mindedness), the food then took 45 minutes to come, missing one plate of food. They then put the missing order through again, and it came out only a few minutes later, but the incorrect order. When we asked the waiter whether it was incorrect (which it clearly was) he said it was not incorrect. After asking him to double check with the kitchen, a new plate came out (within 1 minute). We also never get the bowl of fries we ordered. They then proceeded to charge us full price and after expressing our shock that they hadn't reduced the bill, they gave us a discount of a grand $8. They couldn't even give us the one meal free. Will definitely not return.

Only came in here because we had nowhere else to go but turned out to be an excellent find. The food was very fresh, the flavours weren't too overpowering and wasn't too rich or oily. The service was also quite prompt and friendly. Definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to try some good simple Mexican food cooked well.

This is such a wonderful cosy Mexican Restaurant. Check out the rear beer garden, you'll never want to leave - so cosy and warm! Margarita on the Rocks is my new favourite. My new Friday night hangout.
