Been here on and off for years. The new owners since March 2022 are great. The food is awesome, fresh, healthy...the service is always friendly and they always remember me. Thanks for the lovely dinners, guys

This is the third time. I am a customer who coming here regularly. it is amazing that you giving me a virtual middle finger by giving me this food. . I asked you golden chips. you have confirmed you will give me golden chips. means no brown and burned chips. means less frying. make it 1-2 min less frying. ask for training. its easy, simple, common! frying chips is the simplest task you can do. Please don't tell me that the chips is like that. what are these? are these for eating or for decoration? Remove the rubbish, remove them if they are not look good. Attention to the manager. mate! what are you doing? what your job? train your employee. mate, wake up. stop it. stop it. common, this brand don't know how to fry chips?

Been eating here for years. Time to leave a review. Thank you for all the amazing food! Love the fish burrito- personal fav. Kids love the chicken and chips.

I am same Behrang! Today, I have ordered special lunch with golden chips! Yes! this is what should be done for the next 10 years regarding the quality of chips! golden, beautiful and appetizing! I am happy with it! and feeling I have considered. and not embarrassed in front of my freind! Thanks!

Yeah it’s okay but I got more chips than fish so the ratio was off. Alternatively, a bit of salad instead of all chips would have been nice. Also the lunch special is not available on public holidays (evidenced by little handwritten notes)- that’s not good, it would help sales on quiet days

I have ordered a few times from them and normally is pretty good. Today was a disappointment. I order online via their website thinking of helping them out avoiding uber fees etc.. got there my order wasn't ready which wasn't a big of deal just to come home to an unpleasant meal. The fish was not fresh and what I ordered grilled looked like poached fish. I was so disappointed that I barely had any. Shame, don't think I will be ordering here again.

Very good lunch will like to come back again

Pretty good serving size. Even better food. Would visit again post lockdown. They use best quality fish. Worth checking them out whenever you are in the area.
Julian
These guys have easily the best chips from
a fish and chip shop I’ve ever tried. The chicken salt they use is worth dying for. Keep up the good work guys you’re on fire!
JKGasMan
Lovely lunch here. Fresh and delicious fried fish and chips. Blue grenadier fish was very fresh. Crispy chips. Asian Slaw salad was a good side to have with the meal.

Overall score: 17/25 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
in 5 words: come here for mashed peas
*
Taste ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - ordered the English fish and chips. The mashed peas is one of the best I’ve had - buttery and delicious! fish was delicious, just the right amount of batter!

Honestly, not the biggest fan of their thick cut fries - it tastes a bit bland sometimes. But the reason I keep coming back is because of their fish and mashed peas.

Oh, their lunch offers are great too. The fish burger at $10 is a huge winner that will put a certain fillet o fish burger to shame.
*
Ambience ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - This shop is consistently clean and looks so inviting. Cheap and cheerful!
*
Price ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- a fish and chips generally costs $14 but we had 30% off on EatClub. I’ve also ordered this on Ubereats and the fish and chips tasted great.
*
Presentation ⭐️⭐️⭐️- the fish and chips looked delicious and we couldn’t wait to tuck in!
*
Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - service was fast and friendly.

We order for delivery. And the fish was hot and batter crunchy. Chips were fine. A chipper box meal is a decent serving size, which was filling.
Kirsty Haggerty
I ordered ‘The Royal Family Box’ from UberEats, which was a great deal. The fish was delicious with a great crispy batter, the dim sims were good, the salad was okay, the potato cake was quite tasteless, the calamari was rubbery and the chips were quite ordinary, they didn’t that unique fish and chip taste. Overall, a bit of a disappointment but it could be different when dining at the restaurant.
Scott Watson
Have always loved the food, and is always amazing quality. But the saturation of Uber eats means waiting in the actual restaurant can take over 35min. When a few years back it would be 16min

Really good fish n chips in Windsor. Tasty fish options, crispy batter, glorious chips. Great interior. Service was swift and friendly. I’m kinda hooked on this place.
Stephanie Campbell
Surprised by how good it was, had the grilled blue grenadier with a superfood salad and brown rice, it was fresh and clean. Sweet potato chips hit the spot too.
Andy Vonburgerson
It’s an average to just above average fish and chip shop at best. Nothing out of the norm that you won’t find at a basic shop. Tide was out on the chips which is pretty disappointing, throw in a few more like the good shops do. Keep the people happy. Not horrible.. just pricey. Will try elsewhere.
Burgers Of Melbourne
Quality fish a chips on Chapel St in Windsor. Not only do these guys do great fish, but the beef burger was amazing! I decided to double up and it was a great move. Meet was cooked perfectly and it had nice cheese melt. Fish is available both grilled and fried as you would expect. Packs are well priced and are good value.
DamoForce Food
We walked past one day and caught a glimpse of some of their reel deals. So we had to bookmark it and return. We did that are were pleasantly surprised by how good the fish and calarmai was. Along with everything else as well.

Would I return? Does Uber eats count?
Ordered several times from Hooked for one particular thing I must admit... the Panko Crumbed Fish Burger. Perfect ratio of fresh fish to burger bun - there is nothing worse than too much bread/not enough burger in my opinion. The flavours are well thought out, yet simple. I do however add hot sauce when it arrives but that’s just me: I’m a saucy person and a hot one at that. It’s quick, it’s cheap, it’s addictive. (As per image I accidentally ordered a fish burrito last time too - no judgements. It was nice but has nothing on the burger). Only qualm; the Japanese mayo is NOT spicy. Like, at all.
Sivashankar Sivam
Average fish and chips at the very best. Their grilled calamari and chips were dried out. Perhaps the cook was having an off day?

The only savior was their tartare sauce and their chilli aioli. For $15 a meal, you had to pay $1.50 for these as well. So that was a shame.
Ajanni Urbas
Worst fish and chips i have ever had. The chinese standard fisha and chippers in Box Hill do it better, drove out here to have a nice dinner with my mother who is leaving, and i have experienced utmost anger. The fish is mushy and the thickest piece of flake i have ever seen. The grilled fish is not even seasoned, i could make something better with my eyes closed. Hunky dory any day of the week.
Hungry Little Dinosaur
Came here on rainy afternoon and was thoroughly impressed by the calamari and chips! You can definitely see that they change their oil very regularly. lightly fried calamari with nice fat chips. A bit disappointing that sauce was not provided but calamari was well seasoned enough to not need sauce. Didn’t really understand how they could justify asking an extra $2 for a superfood salad that just had some extra broccoli in it. Will return though.
Quinn
Order through ubereats one serve of chips, gummy flank and asian coleslaw, I was satisfied with what they offer. The fish was seasoned beautifully and the sweet potatoes chip was fantastic. I love it! Would love to come to the actual place to have a meal too!
Kimberley Leggett
Really enjoyed a great value lunch special at $12.50 for barramundi +rice or chips + salad today. Had the Asian slaw with grilled barramundi (it's a decent serve- a bit on the smaller side) but enough to enjoy with the serve or rice and salad. My partner and I shared rice on one dish and sweet potato fries (which were SO GOOD). We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and it was a cheap and quick option for a weekday lunch.

I do dislike the extra charge of $2 to have another salad (extra greens) instead of rice or chips. Other than its a great spot for a quick and easy (and cheap!) feed.
Hungry Ronin
Pleasantly surprised by this place. Has the look and feel of a quaint, proviciancial beach house and a nice seating arrangement. Our seafood platter was tasty and the mussels were delightful. The sauce was delicious and smelled of the fresh ocean, perfect to be the dip for the bread and left over fries. Hooked is also competitively priced for what it is.
Tinmans Treats
This is my local fish n chipper in Windsor. Their chips are fat and tasty, their salt and pepper squid is tender and crisp, the batter on the fish is light, and the fish is cooked well. My go to meal is the box for one which has the battered fish, chips, tartare and smashed peas. Service is friendly, quick service, I really can't say anything bad about this place.
Maxplusfood
Hooked’s restaurant will get you in the mood for fish and chips, with it nautical knick-knacks and giant octopus mural adorning the walls. While Hooked’s menu has recently been refreshed with burgers and burritos, today I’m going with the classic fare of Salt and Pepper Calamari.
Katherine
I had takeaway from this place for dinner with my boyfriend's family. Their chips were a bit soggy. The battered fish was really good so was the potato cake.
Maddie Kingham
Came here tonight with my sister for a quick snack. We just ordered a large chips to share. Service was quick and friendly, and the price for the large chips ($7.95) was quite reasonable when the box came out- very decent portion size! We'd intended to have it takeaway but decided to just sit down and eat them in the end. The chips were cooked to perfection- crispy and fluffy and well-seasoned, too! The decor is stylish inside and it is a nice place to sit and have a meal- or a quick snack! I recommend this place for upmarket style fish and chips!
Manuel Kozirakis
This place needs to be closedown. Ordered flake and chips pack. $14.50. Ridiculously expensive. Paid my money. Got my food. Opened the pack and saw the smallest price of flake approx 10cm and literally 15 chips (yes I counted them). This pack was large chips. Not that I need to eat many chips but I was curious.
I questioned this with the sales attendant and received an apology. He then proceeded to make me a new pack. Whilst the chips were being cooked I notice the same chap drop the already cooked chips from the original offering back into the fryer. End result: blue grenadier instead of flake over cooked chips.
Greed at its best.
Gerd Pranoto
These guys still make the best salt and pepper calamari in Melbourne. And its only $10 with lunch special. Cant lose. The handcut chips used to be much better though. I dont know what happened there
Robin Singh
One of my favourite fish and chips shop in Melbourne, there 10$ lunch deal is so awesome, totally worth it
Staff is very friendly as well
Totally recommend it
Thanks
Ari Gibson
Over priced garbage in my honest opinion. Couldn't have asked for a more greasy set of fries and the fish was small looked like to save costs they sliced the fillet in half.
Anuj Anand
Decent food and good run for your money with a scoopon voucher. would I return? probably not - only because i know better places that do better fish and chip.s

Ever since this place has opened, it has been one of my food options to must eat at when out with a bunch of friends, other than Nandos. 😆

The service team is exceptional at this store, I've always have had positive experiences! Legit, the server/waiter/waitress will ask how your meal is going. Such a rare thing to witness these days unless you're at a snazzy place. The wait time has been quick, around the 10 min mark but often at times, less than that when it's not busy.

My favourite is the fish burger lunch special. I either get this everytime or their catch of the day with chips without the mashed greens (which I don't like and you can ask to take it off and get more chips instead for the same price).

Whats On The Grill?
Overpriced and lacks too many of the classic f&c items like your dim sims, scallops etc. I find the chips too fat & chunky also. Probably would go back due to convenience of location but far from the best I have had.
Meg
Love, love, love, this place!! Regularly get the lunch time special for $10 'English fish and chips' great portion size, delicious chunky cut chips, Light crispy battered fish. With the option of having the fish grilled with a range of salads for a healthier option, and THE BEST part they have sarsons vinegar!!!!!! The fish burrito is also delicious, great tasting sauce with a spicy fresh tang. I highly recommend this place.
Steve H
Very tasty fish and chips indeed!! My wife ordered salt and pepper calamari whilst I ordered battered barramundi, both of which were cooked to perfection. The salt and pepper calamari was crispy and crunchy, seasoned just right. The barramundi was battered lightly with a fresh crunch evident - the fish contained inside was beautifully moist with no hint of dryness present. The chips and salad served alongside the fish were ok, but nothing extraordinary.

Customer service over the telephone and in person were brilliant. It was obvious that the team were keen to obtain and retain customer clientele and willing to assist in any way possible with terrific menu explanations and friendly interactions at the counter and at the tables. Two thumbs up!! 👍🏻👍🏻

P.S. Locals with ID proving residence within the local postcode receive 20% off orders between 6pm and 9pm on Tuesday evenings - score!! 👍🏻

The worst experience. I was so happy at the prospect of gluten free fish n chips but was so disappointed and let down. Long story short- they lost our order, made us wait over an hour and would be still waiting if we hadn't intervened. Rubbish! Don't bother.
Angeline Widjaja
The grilled fish with quinoa salad & brown rice are really good! Never know can go healthy like this😃. They also have lunch promo at only 10dollars. Will come back here again in the future time :)
La Ola Es Mia Cocina.
Hooked on Hooked. Honestly has one of the best deals in Melbourne going around with amazing $10 lunch specials. I use to visit their other store in Fotsroy and from what I've found is that no matter which hooked you go to, all the food I've ever tried at a few different locations, is that they all taste great. Great service by the team here as well. So tasty and my friend is now hooked also.

Finally got to go here and wasn't disappointed! Best fish and chips I have had. Truthfully that says a lot coming from myself as I am a Queenslander originally and I have had a lot of fish and chips from growing up there. Yes my fish was a little oily compared to my partners but it was so crunchy and flaky. Would have like to see my chips as crunchy as the fish. Good value for what you get I believe. 👌🏽
Daniele
I was there with my 2 years old daughter. We took the salmon and the portion was as small that was not enough for the little one!not tasty at all the only thing really good was the salad! Never again
DuckieLovesToEat
I have always been a fan of seafood. I grew up in a household where we always have a seafood dish on the table amongst other morsel. I must say I was impressed at the salt & pepper calamari. I really enjoyed that. The location of this place is also good for people watching. The staff were also nice and friendly. I will go back.

Yep, I am also officially unhooked! Used to come here for lunch all the time and it seems to have gone downhill. Have visited a couple of times lately and have left feeling disappointed. Last time the rice and salad was really bland and completely lacking in flavour. This time had the $12.50 Bara-Monday lunch special, and whilst the rice and salad was nice, it was obvious that the piece of fish served was just the tail end cut off from the rest of the piece smaller in size than the palm of a hand. When I asked about this, they said that the lunch special has a smaller size piece of fish as compared to ordering from the main menu. But this is not clear at all from the advertised special on the counter. Left feeling disappointed and still hungry. Two strikes and I'm out unfortunately, as I used to love this place. The soft drinks from the fridge are also often not very cold, but I guess this is a relatively minor issue!
Bee
Extremely poor service - one particularly sarcastic and rude staff member. Pretty average food too. Much better fish and chips shops within the vicinity.
Dixie
Very small piece of fish for the $10 blue grenadier fish chips and salad deal, long wait too, not worth it, won't be coming back again. Such a disappointment after beautiful fish and chips at Doug's Seafood Cafe in Sandgate Qld
EatPraySleep
Heard good thing about the dory burger and wasn't disappointed. The burger was as good as the hyped but the chips not so much....a little soggy.
TheBearReview
What happened to this place?!
I used to work across the road and got takeaway from here EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK.
Loved the sweet potato 'shavings' and parsley they put on their fish and chips. This place was a gem.
I got a take away soft shell crab burger a few days ago and I end up throwing half of it out. The crab was over fried and tiny. It was a complete disappointment. My girlfriend got the fish and chips, and the fish was bland but the worst thing was the super hard and thick batter.
I am officially unhooked!
ChipCritic
my friends and I tried this flash joint hoping that the chips here were ones that had the right mouth feel, with a decent, crisp crunch. Unfortunately, the chips I have just described is the stuff if fantasy as I bit into chunky, heavy chips which were so unpleasant, I actually left one behind. Flavourless is the word to describe it, won't have these chips again.
EJA
I like the food, it's pricey but it's yummy. I tried the fish pie once, I found a few bones in it so beware, but the grilled fish and the fish burgers are delicious. Smashed peas were yummy too! Great service, cute nautical themed place. I come here from time to time.

First time trying Hooked after walking past many times. Delicious super fresh seafood with plenty of healthy options! Had their lunch special which was grilled blue grenadier, Asian greens and chips for a steal (about $10 from memory) and was extremely impressed with the dish. Fish was cooked well, greens were tender and flavourful and the chips... hand cut and rustic - big & fluffy pieces mixed with the small & crispy ones (LOVE)!! perfect for a casual bite and amazing value for money, definitely prefer over Hunky Dory :)
GoodTaste
Just had lunch at Hooked Fish & Chipper for the first time. And I'm quite impressed. I had the grilled dory burger and a side of chips. The dory was cooked beautifully, so tender and seasoned well. The only downfall was the burger was slightly too salty for my taste. It was possibly the sauce that was too salty or perhaps the pickles. Minor complaint though. I'd still order it again. Chips were good and a generous side serve. I'll be back.
Tangelo Trooper
Just had the chipper box with rice and salad and the salt and pepper calamari and tartare sauce, sooooo good! The flavours were awesome, the size was perfect and it was exactly what I was looking for
Gastrology
Raymond Good has been bringing sustainable and healthy options to Melbourne’s fish and chip scene since he opened up his first Hooked on Chapel St in 2006. Now he is bringing the classics. Neale White of Flinders Lane’s lauded Papa Goose and ex-chef of Gordon Ramsay has teamed up with Good to craft a new winter menu inspired by classic British comfort food.

The battered house fish was excellent, so light and crispy. I like that you can swap out the chips for brown rice & greens, makes for a nice healthy alternative. The calamari was tender however I wasn't a big fan of the spices used in the batter. The ambience was nice, would return.
Sweet And Sour Fork
...so my Grilled NZ Dory with Rice and Asian Greens ($14.95) was not fish and chips per se, but it was surprisingly delicious for something so virtuous. The fillets of fish were firm and moist, served with brown rice seasoned with a little bit of sweet soy, and vibrantly fresh greens drizzled with soy sauce and sesame oil.
Jeanegg
Nice atmosphere, and the lobster roll was delicious!
Charlotte
Had the calamari and chips which I really enjoyed, though I found it quite pricy for the few pieces calamari you actually get. Asked for aioli or mayonnaise which wasn't available also. Probably not gonna come back, though it was nice food
KT
Great decor and spacious dining area, Hooked is not your average fish and chip joint. Stepping in kind of makes you feel like you’re on a ship restaurant, with all the sailor inspired displays. Tonight we were in pretty late (1 hour before closing time), but in time for a quick bite. The staff seemed pretty distracted and we were a little rushed. I guess they were trying to clean up to get out for the night.
Thegrazingpanda
Menu: Hooked is the brainchild of Ray Good and has been around for a while now serving healthy seafood – in three different branches – Fitzroy, Windsor and its newest branch in Hawthorn. I was lucky enough to be invited to try out their latest branch. The fit-out is exactly what you would expect to find beach-side with a modern twist – white rustic wooden panels combined with white washed exposed brick walls. There is a large communal table at the centre of the venue, surrounded by wooden tables which largely seat parties of two. To the right along the wall are sailor striped booth style seats and a lifebuoy with the inscription – Hooked – In Cod we Trust – further adding to the seaside vibe. Painted on the brick wall as you walk in is a mural of a blue grenadier, further on the wall is a painting of a diver complete with a diving suit – something for you to admire whilst you await your food. These extra touches, together with the friendly smiles of the staff behind the counter complet
Brunch Addict
Let me just start by saying that these chips are worth every cent. Hooked get two tons of potatoes per week and with their persistent process, deliver a magnificent chip. Not only do these chips gives off food envy, but the crunchy texture was just addictively delicious.
The World Loves Melbourne
Some of the best fish and chips and seafood delights in Melbourne! And let’s face it – we all need a great fish and chippery. Hooked is more than just a fish and chippery offering refined seafood choices! There are several Hooked restaurants in Melbourne and hoping for more. What a find!
Katherine Chiu
I had the fish burger with a drink. And I also ordered chips. So altogether I paid $12.50. One of my friends who is Mr Cheap had just a fish burrito ($8.95) which he complained was too small. He was still hungry afterwards. Sally had fish and chips with Tartare sauce (about $12 I think it was).
LittleFoodie
Since more emphasis is given to taste the overall winner is....Hooked
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Hooked is a bit different to most neighbourhood fish joints; closer to a very casual fish café with quality (and to some extent prices) to match.

So fresh!. Love the cheap lunch special.thegriled scallops, tuna & salmon-speciale
Anim1998
Regularly hooked. Overall good fish and chips place, love the fish burrito and taco especially. Great takeaway service too.

Soft shell crab burger on brioche bun with chips and slaw was probably one of the nicest meals I've had recently! Would recommend nom nom

Not Hooked. Had the displeasure of sampling the fare on 2 January as our favourite F & C venue was taking a well-deserved break. Grilled fish and salad looked and tasted like they were ignored on both xmas day and NYE and the minimum chips were correctly described. And this underwhelming lot would have been expensive at half the price. Looking forward to our next visit to Beluga.

Not opened. Went to go to hooked after training at gym. got there at 11.45am. only to see that they were closed. and the staff were sitting inside. double checked the opening time was 11.30am. yep all good. 11.30am opening. knocked on the door to be told by the staff that they are having a meeting and will be opening at 12.00. so they asked me "so we will see you at 12pm??" umm no thanks ill be off to hunky dorys down the road. don't advertise a 11.30 opening if you can't commit, what shop has a staff meeting after the store is supposed to be open. ha ha seriously what a joke. needless to say as i walked off they hurriedly opened there doors. too late mate.

All good things must end ! . Always loved going to HOOKED on chapel St but I'm sitting here now and all good things must eventually come to an end .. sadly I have found today's experience it ! an abnoxious waiter from New Zealand I presume with red hair was rude and argumentative when my salmon came our over cooked and under size and when I pointed it out said I was incorrect ... not true i was not and then my husband's over priced and under weight tuna was the same sadly we will not be returning there are so many other fabulous fast healthy and better value fish places in melbourne don't waste your time try hunky dory instead !

Went in to hooked for the first time last night for takeaways and was totally impressed not only by the delicious and well cooked food but also by the friendly red head behind the counter. He was lovely! And dealt well with a very busy restaurant and a long line of takeaway customers. Will be coming back again!
Debmark73
Uncooked battered kids fish. The grilled fish was lovely but we also ordered the kids battered fish and had to send it back twice as it was oozing out of the batter.
When we told the waiter that the fish was clear and like jelly we were told that he has had it many times and it is delicious so basically bad luck. I'm sorry but I will not feed uncooked fish to my children!
Biren Patel
Amazing veggie burger. Chip.... Amazing veggie burger.
Chips and potato cake were mind blowing.....
A must place to visit
Reneekbowden
Not great. We ordered two kids packs. Fish was ok and chips were completely soggy when we got home (a short walk away)
Not happy. That was our second try and both times it's been less than average. Won't be going back again.

Hooked on Hooked. Love hooked great healthy food - highly recommend the Tacos both fish and grilled prawn are a winner with just the right amount of zing. Mrs had the grilled house fish and superfood salad telling me it was delicious fresh and healthy.

Can't go wrong with hooked which is lucky as it's the only fish and chip shop around.
Brace Yourself
I have been a regular customer since they first opened. We always get the hooked fish burgers and have always been so impressed but in the last few months they have gone so downhill. The last 3 I have had the fish tastes like plastic and is raw. They have put massive slices of pickled onion which is overpowering. Sorry hooked but you have lost very loyal customers, until you start producing quality fish and go back to where you started. Why change something when it was so good?!

Meal diid not arrive at all. Outside tables laden with food/dirty dishes.. Hi

My first visit to Hooked. Staff at Hooked Chapel Street need serious training. I ordered my meal this afternoon just after 3pm. I was given a table number and sat outside as my daughter was ordering a vegan meal from the restaurant next door. The outside tables at Hooked were laden with dirty plates and left over food with birds walking all over the tables. Not once did the female attendant come out to clear the tables in the 30+ minutes that I waited for my meal, if she had done so, she would have noticed that my order had not arrived. Eventually I saw her coming out of the door - but not with my meal. She ignored the dirty dishes everywhere, looked at me, said goodbye and proceeded to walk off down the street, obviously finishing her shift. There had been only two customers inside the restaurant, so it wasn't busy at all. I then went in to see the two young guys behind in the kitchen to ask about my meal - not forthcoming - young fellow apologised and gave me my money back. I can't tell you what the food was like as never got to eat it - just wasted some of my valuable time and ate when I eventually got home this evening. Surely there are health regulations about clearing food from outside tables in a certain timeframe when there are clients.

Love hooked. Love Hooked. The chips are heaven!! Grilled fish with their salads are a winner too. My boyfriend loves the fishburger and tacos. Definitely recommend
RedShoes
What an eye watering rip off!

$7.95 for a large chips is ok but at that price you expect the large portion to be... well... large? The portion was stingy to say the least - considering you can buy 2kg of potatoes for $6, $8 for what we got is appalling. Hand cut? At this price they should be hand carved!
Rosie Sk
Wow Hooked has changed - only a year ago I would have grilled fish with half chips half salad and it was a glorious feast. Now they have got rid of the half-half option and to be honest it's no longer worth paying 13-15$ - I'd rather pay 8$ and go to a bog-standard fish n chips restaurant :(
Jodie Summers
Over-priced and under-cooked! The worst fish & chips I've had the misfortune of eating in quite some time.
Time To Dance.
Yum yum yum!. I went there with a friend last weekend and ordered the calamari...incredibly tasty and FRESH!! Not to mention the chips which just melted in my mouth! Service was fantastic too..the lady that served us was so happy and friendly and knew her stuff!
Will definitely be going back for more!!
ANGRY COFFEE MAN
Pros and cons.. I like the idea of a healthy seafood place. There are many improvements that need to be made.

First off, I want to say the young lady at the front on Wed 23rd was extremely polite, pleasant, and helped me with all my choices (as I rarely eat seafood). Thanks for the great service.

The menu is quite limited.

I ordered Tas Salmon, which came with a side of asian vegetables (bok choy and broccoli I think), plus a bit of brown rice and a side of mini chips.

The chips were just so bland....tasteless. As was the brown rice. I also don't think brown rice fit in with the type of food being served...it just does not fit in with the other flavours.

The vegetables were delicious. Loved the flavour, but lay off the butter (if that's what it was).

The winner was the salmon, beautifully cooked and crispy!

Loved every morsel of it.

I'd like to see this place do well, but still needs a few improvements.
Tyler Velasquez
Really wanted to like this place. "Healthy" fish and salad option when we are too busy to cook. Food was cold, bland and not satisfying. We said no prawns, due to shellfish allergy. Prawns were thoughtfully still included in our order - meaning no dinner for my partner. Not worth it guys.

Every time I go back here I regret it. I always forget that I promised myself not to return again. I figure writing this review may make the idea stick this time around. The fish arrived - looked like it had been dropped on the floor. The plate was big but the food on the plate was not. A few fries (admittedly very good ones) were thrown on the plate beside the measly bit of fish - special of the day - cant remember the type. Blue grenadier is their house fish which I personally think is the most tasteless white fish u can go for. Overpriced always disppppinted with what I get served. Had a take away from here once too - oh god even worse by the time I got home (5 minutes walk - fish was horrible after being in the box and salad was so mushy). Hunky dory much more generous portions and tastier. Sorry hooked
Sarah G
Healthy and yummy. Walked passed the shop, saw what seemed to be juicy grilled fish and fresh salads and decided to head in for lunch.

We ordered grilled fish of the day with their salad (can't recall the name but it was one of the two featured for the day). The fish was fresh and nicely grilled and the salad was just delicious! It was a mix of brocolli, rocket, spinach, peas, sunflower seeds, quinoa, etc. We finished every bit of it.

For $10.95 pp, we had a satisfying and healthy lunch!

Will definitely be back for more.

Fish never tastes fresh despite it being advertised as such. Chips, sides and sauces are lovely but fish is a let down and it is too expensive to be served frozen fish. My fish today had scales and bones and was just simply
not tasty.

Love the fish, and the side dishes.
No where else I would have gone for a fish and chips!

Amazing Seafood. Went here last night and ordered the grilled house fish with chips. The house fish was the best fish I've had since moving here a year ago, and the hand cut chips were even better. The service was quick and the staff were friendly, you'll definately be seeing me here again! Calamari next time ..... :)

BEST FISH & CHIPS!!. Went here last Friday night with my partner after hearing great things! We had the box for 2 with half chips/half salad and we couldn't finish our meal, the portions were huge and great value for money. Their battered fish is light with a fantastic crunch to it, the best we have both had in a long time and don't even get me started on their chips to say they are amazing would be an understatement. Even though they were obviously part way through a renovation, the atmosphere in there was great. We will definitely be going back!

I've just recently moved to melbourne and have been eating here and loving it! love my traditional fish 'n chips but really appreciate being able to get a healthy alternative with brown rice and asian greens. yuuumm!!
Pat
Great local. Just discovered this local gem. Fantastic healthy and fresh take on fish & chips. Awesome, will be back.

I love this place!!! I have coeliac disease and my housemate has a severe nut, egg and dairy allergy and this is our new #1. The staff are so helpful and knowledgable (unlike many places who either roll their eyes or aren't interested) and the food is so delicious and fresh! Much cheaper than buying seafood in out hometown Hobart. Love it!!
Flippin Chicken..
Chups n Fush.... Quite small portions of fish, however very good. Chips we're average. Interior decor contemporary upcycled fishing town feel. Service was poor. Quite over priced. Limited beverages. There are better places much more reasonably priced, not too far from this place along Chapel St. Move on...

We ordered 2 large chips at a cost of $16, and I have to say they are the worst hot chips I've had in a long time. Apart from the lack of salt or general flavour/seasoning, they were riddled with black bits of potato - the kind you should cut out - ever single chip was defective. Won't be going back.

The latest news on my & my husband's allergic reaction to the prawns- they are not fresh as marketed by hooked. It was confirmed by the health department that preservatives 222 and 232 / sulphites is written on the packets that the prawns are contained in. This doesn't sound "fresh" to me.

-----05 Apr, 2013-----

My husband and I have loved hooked for years. Two weeks ago my husband ate the prawns and came out in a nasty case of hives. We returned a week later to see if it was the prawns that caused the rash. So we ordered the prawns again. Only this time hours later I came out in a nasty rash all over. He also got a milder case of hives again. I'm not sure where they are getting their prawns from now but we have never had this problem before. After a week on steroids and antihistamines we are never going back there!!!

I don’t normally eat fish n chips but these were great. Good calamari and nice fat crispy chips
Amy
Yummy yet pricey!. Had battered calamari, delicious meal but bit overpriced $13.95 for the meal plus extra $2 for selecting salad instead of chips....
Blob
Amazing. Had the grilled catch of the day with brown rice - one of the most delicious meals I have had in Melbourne. Will definitely be going back

Yum, Yum, Yum. Best Fish & Chips in Melbourne. Since my partner and I moved to Melbourne we have tried a range of fish and chip shops and Hooked is by far the winner out of the bunch. Best batter, best chips (you can tell they don't use frozen ones like your average fish shop.) Great service every time we have been there as well!
Angus McKinnon
Was good, not great,. Had their standard fish and chips today. Not sure what the fuss is about. Fish serving was on the small side. Chips were okay. Didn't meet the hype.

I had heard about Hooked's new taco range and I wasn't disappointed! The fish taco is to die for and do cheap at only $5.50. Saw they had re-introduced the potato cake...delicious. I will be back for more!

Hooked indeed. Sustainable, healthy seafood if thats what floats your boat go here.
Reasonable prices as well with a lovely small dining in area if you can find a spot. A special note needs to be made of the variety of contemporary magazines available for the sole or unsocial diner.
The daily lunch special is unbeatable value with a range of choices avaliable. You can get a straight fish and chips with thick crunchy chips and homemade sauces for dipping. The side of rice and bokchoy is also an option though it is often way overdone with soy sauce. The salad is healthy with bean sprouts and ginger, i recommend the half and half where you predictably get half of each side.
The service though a little on the slow side after the order is placed is friendly and laid back.
Fish requires a delicate touch with heat and hooked consistently get it right, only one occasion out of about 10 iv'e had under cooked calamari.
Would i go there again? Yes, am now a regular and have a loyalty card.
8/10

Cottonseed oil?. Just checked the menu these guys use Australian made cottonseed oil.Over 90% of cotton grown in Australia is Genetically Modified , are they using this GM oil or is the oil specifically a GM free variety?

Healthy takeaway.. Bit expensive but worth it for a healthy takeaway option.

The fish tasted like dirt. I got 3 other people to taste it and they agreed that it tasted like dirt. They were like, 'Did you just rub this fish in dirt? Cause it tastes like dirt.' Then i got this old guy to try it and he was like, 'this fish tastes like the dust that settles on an underground car park's airconditioning duct' which i thought was very specific but i agreed with him anyway.
Travis
$10.50 lunch deals are good value, they also have a loyalty card , which is a nice idea...good food and friendly front of house staff
Charlie
I said i liked it...but its rather over rated..quite pricey as well
Anastasia
They didnt get me hooked.. I went with my partner and let me warn you to not get take away from Hooked. It was horrible! The calamari was like rubber and the sticky rice was too sticky for my liking... hand cut chips were nothing to brag about and looked like they were cooked in not so clean oil. My partner had the hooker fish burger which by the time we got home was soggy and didn't look the best, the fish in the burger tasted nice but I just cant justify spending $30 and getting rubbish like that. Maybe you need they shouldn't do take away.

Hooked on Hooked. Went to Hooked for the first time after hearing many good reviews. They are good! Crispy tempura batter, and those crunchy, chunky chips..so good! Highly recommended.
Saucy Thyme
Love the fresh fish and thick cut chips here. The sticky rice is a real hit and miss. At times it can be nicely cooked with a slight bite to it, but other times it has been overcooked to the point of being so mushy it feels like mashed potato
Legalbagel
Solid choice for fish and chips; prawns beautifully fresh with a great side salad and the fish boxes a good value option. The service was average and more staff are desperately needed. Dependable, but nothing exciting. B+
Tardar Sauce
Tasty!!!. Love the flavours in the veggie burger. Have been told the fish is really nice. The brown rice and bok choi is pretty tasty too.
2 thumbs up!!
Rik
Was better before. The food is quite good but never get a take away; you will most likely find something that you have paid for is missing. Nothing near as good as it was a year or so ago - a typical example of lowering its standards after initial success. I WILL NOT BE BACK
A Person You Know
Delicious and Healthy. Dined at Hooked for the first time on the weekend and have already been back for lunch this week. The quality of food (as compared to generic Fish & Chips shops) is of a much higher standard. The flavours are delicious, and the choice of options for sides is a delightful step outside of the typical. I think it represents great value for money as well.
Frank
Great food. Makes you feel good about fish&chips. Definitely good value for money!
Tom
This place used to be brilliant. Why happened? Last 2 visits were disappointing.... for $18-19 The fish portions are super stingy, whereas serves were very generous in the past. Won't go back
Stew DMC
RECOMMENDED!. A `true' Fish shop that do Fish & Chips well. Have always enjoyed my takeaways from here.
Sanpedro667
Fish n chips with a twist. The essense of this place is fish n chips done well with a few extras thrown in. The chips are chunky but still perfectly cooked. The side dipping sauces are amazing, Asian Sabal is a lemongrass chilli, coriander, ginger & garlic mix that is amazing. Pricer than a normal fish n chip shop but much better value than a pub fish n chips. Highly recommended.
Boopy
Yum, healthy and although a little pricey it's worth it. The sticky rice& bokchoy are great instead of chips
Suzette
Never again... Why oh why would you batter and deep fry 'entire' prawns (with head/legs/tail/innards still in place) - biting through the batter to be confronted with a hidden prawn head was absolutely revolting!!!! Not to mention this was a seriously expensive meal!!! never again. yuck.
Christine Tona
Can't go wrong. Hooked offer great fish choices and a great serving of salad. They also provide some trimmings which add to the presentation and the variety of the food. The sweet potato shavings remind me of FishMongers in Byron Bay, in fact, the entire feel of Hooked I believe is based on this same iconic shop in Byron Bay. Definitely go back there again. Service with a smile!
Lauzy
Used entertainment voucher (buy one get one free). Which made this great value. Ordered fish of day with salad. Very nice meal. Would return in near future for a quick/healthy meal.
Bennis
Nice. Awesome staff who remember faces, $14 for fish & salad/corn is pretty decently priced as it is good quality food.

Tempura batter is a league above the normal beer batter you find in other fish & chip shops. Once you add the cost of fish and sides + quality it works out to be cheaper to go to Hooked ;)
GB
Pretty good. Ate here on the weekend, got the fish (japanese crumbed with onion, cucumber etc) burger and small serve of chips. The serve of chips was pretty generous and I couldn't finish them all. Burger was very tasty. Not a lot of fish and chip shops in inner Melbourne so it will be interesting to see if a competitor springs up.
Rest of the menu is a little pricey though.
Bill Jones
Okay let's be honest! $18.00 for a small serve of fish is okay If it's not dry fish, unfortunately mine was. Fortunately the chips were great. Frankly a little over rated. Being asked to return your empty plates to the service area is one thing but not having a clean table is questionable.

Fantastic fish and chips!

Fantastic! Love it!. I have to say that the first thing that made me fall in love with Hooked is the staff - the counter staff are always smiling and welcoming which really means a lot to me.

There food is fresh, delicious and full of flavour. I just recently went again a few days ago and tried the fisherman's soup and wow! I was very impressed. I don't think I have had soup that good at a 5 star restaurant - definitely worth it. Also their calamari, and king prawns are to die for. I think this place is a winner.
Lost In Lerderderg
Better than Fish and Chips. Probably the best fish and chips this side of the Yarra. In fact the best I can remember in recent years except for restaurants where you pay $35 or more for this. Who wants fish&chips anyway when you can have fish, sticky rice and bok choy? Delicious!
Rob
Pricey but good. Yeah it's expensive, but I can imagine how much the overheads like rent and staff cost. It's always tasty and fresh. The staff have always been friendly and welcoming. Love the tuna burger. The fact that there is always a line when I go, shows that the locals love it.
John Wintle
17 bucks for a serving for one. Hooked I am not!

Superb. 9/10!

Best fish and chips I've had in a long time. Fresh, plenty of options and the lunch box with salad and corn is excellent value. The salad alone, is delicious!

Nice decor, layout and the better side of chapel st in Windsor!

Highly recommended, in fact heading back there for lunch today.
LizJ
Shared a delicious meal - the box for 2 - with my partner. The fish, the calamari were very good, chips, crunchy and clean. Loved it.

Not " hooked " no more. 26/ 11/09 i went to hooked and ordered a lunch box for lunch today, take away that is. As a regular customer , male and weigh 90kg 185 cm tall it has been good eating at this place but today was the worse by saying what i had received for my $10 lunch box which was only a piece of fish 10cm long and approximately 15 to 20 pieces of chips and was in shock and approached the young girl at the counter and told her what is this? her answer was the lunch box has always been given the same since. Unhappy i was, hopefully other customers are satisfied in future.
Andy Lim
I do very much like Hooked, however it's best when eaten there. Chips and fish often soggy by the time it's home.
