Review Truongs Food House - Windsor

Can’t get enough of their Crispy Chicken with rice 😋 It takes a while to cook but I don’t mind the wait. Seriously so yummy! Friendly service, value for money and no frills cafe. Keep up the good work guys! 👍 Update: Sad to say their Crispy chicken is off their menu now unless you order 10+ more. I hope they bring it back when they got more staff in the kitchen. ☹️

Just good as usual, quick home cooking & good price , nice Ice coffee or traditional Vietnamese coffee, warm salad also available here . 2021 You could get nice hot noodle soup called pho here in the early morning too. 2019

Banh Mi was a good choice. Crispy bread made it standing out and adding better taste and freshness to the overall. However Pho was just average, tasty texture of beef was left out in the broth, but nicely portioned.

Over priced food (8$ for a piece of BBQ chicken and 6$ for 2 drumsticks) but good quality and yummy taste

We bought a Groupon and was disappointed with the overall experience. Everything doesn't taste authentic. There was beef flavour in the soup but not your typical pho taste. The spring rolls we're crunchy but once again not your usual Vietnamese flavour. It comes with sweet chilli rather than fish sauce! Food - 4 Service - 5 Vibe - 5

This place was fantastic! Unfortunately now the crispy pork is served stale, old, cold-room temperature and so “crispy” it’s likely to break your teeth.

Easily the best Crispy Pork Banh Mi's I've had in Melbourne
Paul McConaghy
Great fresh food at a good price.

Very average food. Lacked much flavour, using chicken slides and no veggies in the stirfry. Much better Vietnamese food in Richmond and Springvale.

Quite good. Coriander could of been fresher. Some was a little bruised and not right. But pork banh mi was delicious as was fried rice. Spring rolls were nice not amazing. Would give 5 stars if... More pickled daikon and use pate in banh mi 😊

Who went - 2 banh mi lovers (my friend is vietnamese so if she says good it has to be good haha!)
When - Weekday dinner
Accessibility- Short walk from tram stop

Order - 2x vietnamese pork rolls+vietnamese pancake

Review - Loved loved loved the banhmi. the buns was fluffy & fresh, the crispy pork perfectly cooked with the crackle. The bun was buttered up well & not stingy with pork too. I love mine spicy so added extra red chillies. Def 5 stars & more.
Pancake on the hand was a major let down. We could taste the raw turmeric in there & the fillings were not up to the mark. I am allergic to prawns so we asked for them not to be added & they didn't replace it with another meat so the pancake was mostly empty from inside. The sweet sauce was good but the pancake left was disappointed.

Verdict - Defo going back for banhmi and will try something else on the menu except the pancakes!
Value - $

Love their pork rolls and the avocado smoothie. Been here many times to satisfy my cravings for those and it never lets me down. I will definitely travel to here for food

Stick to the banh mi!
Ordered the vermicelli with lemongrass beef today to takeaway... came with 5 pieces of beef and it literally had no flavour. There was definitely no lemongrass used and the amount of bean shoots they put in this dish is insane. It was simply crap!

My partner and I LOVE this place. We always go there when we want to eat good Vietnamese and cheap foot. Must try the Crispy pork Bahn mi it’s amazing

Came here on a Sunday morning when passing by Windsor.. Food was mediocre and you could tell that this place wasn’t a very authentic place..
We had the roast pork bun, the pork wasn’t crispy and the bread and filling wasn’t as fresh..
We also had the pho which I wouldn’t recommend having.. Spring rolls were kind of ok but you can’t really go wrong with spring rolls..
Might be ok for a quick Vietnamese fix but honestly there would be a lot more options around the area..
I wouldn’t really recommend this place..

Came here on weekend afternoon, it was quiet and cozy. The pho was okay, not the best one in Melbourne but might be the best in the area. The prawn spring rolls were quite good, not too greasy and had a crispy layer. The veggies and mint were very fresh which were great match with the deep fried spring rolls. Staffs were friendly and the vibe was chilled, which was a nice place to spend a weekend afternoon for some yummy food. Seems like the bread rolls are the most popular items on the menu, as many customers coming in for bread rolls takeaway. Would come back for the bread rolls someday!

the best Vietnamese roll in Melbourne. I strongly recommend the crispy pork roll with a cup of fresh smoothie. freshly baked roll, crunchy pickles, juicy crispy pork, tasty liver paste.
Salomon Andres Anais Saavedra
Nice place to have a Vietnamese roll but it is not the best around that location. I had also a wings but they were pretty dry and not crunchy.
ArchieTheHipster
The most generous and delicious banh mi that I have ever tasted in Melbourne. The roll is really fresh and crispy, the roast pork is juicy, tender. The avocado is a good company too

Since I began working in Windsor, Mister Truong's 2 has become a habit of mine. A small family- run affair placed within stumbling distance of the train station, the shop is small yet welcoming. An older Vietnamese woman runs the show out front, and she has the place running like a well oiled machine by the looks of it. The crispy pork roll is their biggest seller, and there's no question why. The pork is fatty and juicy and the skin cracks between your teeth. The roll is toasted and crisp and is packed with vege and lined with butter. A definite recommendation of mine. Go to Mister Truong's for a fast, somewhat healthy, inexpensive and delicious meal.

As is ... just fine ...

Started with two of those $2.50/each Prawns and Pork rice paper rolls ... or $8.00 for 4 rolls. Served cold, fresh and tangy as Basil plus Hoisin dipping sauce... 9/10.

Continued with $7.00 crusty baguette filled with vegetarian favourite ... shaved carrots, sliced cucumber, onions and it went well with some crispy skin Pork Belly 9/10.

Quick, no nonsense order and pay ... Red facade, not much in terms of set up, crowded with some bits and pieces thrown together ... modern, pop stools ... but be ready to queue ... keep on serving those delish fares ... don't go changing ... you are just fine as it is. Came here on using Groupons, 4pax Sunday lunch . The Pork Rolls are simply the absolute BEST we have ever tasted. The Pho was great too. If only they weren't located so far away from us, we'd be back every fortnight!
Lynda
Absolutely amazing place! Such delicious and traditional Vietnamese, made with fresh ingredients and at amazing prices. Definitely not your stock-standard Melbourne eatery in terms of decor but it honestly adds to the traditional feel of the place. Truong's has been on my radar for a while now and I can honestly say the quality has no waned once since I have been. Could not recommend Mister Truong's more!!

Awesome vegan tofu roll (hold the butter) for $5. Cheap beer too. Winner!!!
Cheapest meal on Chapel I’ve found since moving here! 5/5 Stars !
DuckieLovesToEat
I came here with Groupon voucher for their pork belly. What an amazing flavour. Good size and generous pork belly serving. I will definitely come back even with no Groupon voucher. Very friendly staff!

Just tried a pork belly “banh mi” and after many ones in the surroundings I can say that this is my favorite! Way better than many in the city! The pork belly super crispy and juicy, excellent flavors overall and “dirty” as a good banh mi should be!
NoCapsicumPlease
It took me a while to travel here for a “banh mi” but it was really worth travelling for. They are specialised in “banh mi” and smoothies. Go for the crispy pork and avocado smoothie then you will fall in love with this place
Food Hunter
Best crispy pork roll ever. I’d reckon food has been adjusted to meet local taste, so no classic pho in the place. But still it’s a good noodle soup dish. Soup is clear but quite favourable. Barely find a good restaurant on Chapel street. This is a must-try place.

The crispy pork bahn mi is really good - 5/5 for this.
But other menu are not good at all, and the service is very poor. The place is also very small, definitely not for a group.
We ordered pho and had to wait almost an hour. Then it finally came and one of them was wrong. They barely apologised and didn't seem to care. It's ok we don't mind, wouldn't wait another hour to get the right one :)
Next time we'll only get the bahn mi, that seems to be the only thing they're good at.

Affordable and friendly, this small Vietnamese eatery serves a wide variety of rolls (Banh Mi), as well as other traditional Vietnamese dishes. The atmosphere is inviting and cosy, good for a quick breakfast, lunch or afternoon snack. It's unpretentious, and basic - these are good things. Try the crispy pork Banh Mi, the Mister Truong special dishes and the authentic iced coffee (cafe sua da)!

Mister Truongs is already number one of my favourite places on Chapel Street and somewhere has to be mind blowingly good for that to change. I feel lost if I don’t visit at least once a week, there have been times I’ve eaten breakfast, lunch and dinner here. The service is only okay due to a language barrier and there’s minimal seating but my lord is the food and coffee amazing. The portions are huge, fresh and best of all cheap.
Tomlovestoeat
Crispy roll and lovely soft pork with crispy skin. The veggies were also fresh and the coriander works great with the sauce. For $6.50 they are practically giving it away!
Nean
The rolls were nicely crispy, however the carrots could have used having Vietnamese pickling for flavour. There was a lot of crispy pork included as well. All in all, a cosy little place (despite posted pictures making it seem larger). We were satisfied.

Came here for dinner tonight with my sister. Service was okay but nothing special, there were kids out the back yelling the whole time which didn't add to the ambiance.
The food was okay but nothing wow. I got the chicken Pho and my sister got the vegetable noodle soup.
The Pho was nice and the broth was good but lacked the intense depth of flavour I look for in a Pho and it was clear the Chicken wasn't cooked in the broth and simply added at the end.
It was good but not amazing. The rolls look and smell amazing though so I might have to come back to try one out, especially since the prices and value for money is so good.

The place is quite small so not recommended for big groups. 2-4 is just nice.

Mister Truong signature rice:
This set is definitely for meat lovers. It's come with rice, fried egg, 3 types of pork- shredded pork, pork belly and pork chop and some fresh vegetables with chilli sauce condiment at the side. Definitely fill you up for lunch. Pork belly was good ! So perhaps give it a go with the pork belly roll !

special beef pho:
Nothing outstanding with the pho, comes with beef slices and beef balls. The soup was a little bland.

Prawn rice paper rolls:
The rice paper rolls was a little overwhelming with the vermicelli. Hence tasted quite bland on its own. So I used up a lot of sauce to get a kick of flavour which.. shouldn't be the case. The rice paper was too dry and sticky in my opinion.
Hidden treasure in Chapel St. From the outside, the restaurant does not look as pleasing as the other restaurants in the area but their Crispy Roasted Pork Roll is to die for! Pork belly is cooked just nice and similar to Siew Yok. The succulent pork belly wrapped in a sweet bun garnished with their in-house made salad is simply amazing. Pricewise, $6.50 is reasonable. You won't go home hungry
Chefosaurus
Bahn mi oh my lord! One of the best I have tried outside Vietnam. Fresh, tasty with a beautiful dressing. I loved the extra coriander but I will ask for chilli next time to give it a bit of zing! I will go again for sure!

Best vietnamese rolls (banh mi) in Melbourne.

Signature dish at Mister Truong's is roast pork ( literally second to none).

The roast pork vemicelli here is the bomb. Another must try is the traditional vietnamese ice coffee (with the little traditional coffee filter if you dine in)

Friendly and attentive service ! Very happy with this place.
Ignatia
Crispy pork roll is so disappointing, I thought the other review about the bahn mi was just a one time thing, but I also didn't enjoy my bahn mi. HOWEVER, the pho was good. It's only $8 but the portion is big, I liked it.
Bob
Great Bahn Mi's, crispy pork is always good, sometimes a little too much fat is probably my only gripe. Really nice rice paper rolls and dim sims too. Cheap, cheap cheap also!!
Kathleen Khaw
Best Vietnamese bread rolls in the area. Good vegetarian options too. They are always so friendly and the price is always good, especially when they do specials
Facebook User
Really stepped up their game since new management. Love the bread rolls. Love the Vietnamese coffee. Love the random deals they have here and there. Great prices. Glad something like this is close by and not having to drive to the western suburbs or springavle, etc.
Aaron Tenabel
Authentic as it gets. Pho, pork rolls, iced coffee and smoothies. Great place and the staff are friendly. Well worth the visit if you're in the area
Esther Wong
It is one of the best roast pork roll I have eaten. It is finance department weekly fare. Most of the food we have tried are good, Pho, broken rice. It is a very good Vietnamese eatery around Chapel street.

Local Gem if you live in the Prahran/Windsor area.
$6 Bahn Mi absolute bargain!
Myself and friends dine here regularly and always left satisfied.

Best Pho on Chapel Street
Just had it on my way home. For $8 they served a big bowl of heart warming beef pho ❤️🍲 The staff are nice and let me enjoy my pho in solitude. People keep coming in for take aways and dine in. Love it!
Paul
Couldn't fault the service here. Greeted as soon as we walked in and explained what was on offer. We chose the special of the crispy roasted pork roll and couldn't fault it. Highly recommend this place in a great location

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this place. Great food, all of it, and great prices. I've been in the area for 8 years and unfortunately only discovered this place recently. I'll be back again and again and again. Love your work Mr Truong!

I love a good banh mi, but I'm sad to say that it's not available at Mister Truong's. We tried the crispy pork banh mi and there were a few major things wrong with it, primarily the taste. I watched the person assemble the sandwich, which lacked pate, she put the vegetables in and then toasted it. Both our banh mis had visible black burn marks from toasting, so she tried to saw off some of the crust. Then she added the meat, which was pretty dry and chewy. I saw her add sauce to the banh mi, but the whole thing was bland. I felt like I was eating a crumbly bun and dry meat that masked any other flavors or textures, except for the char from the burnt bread.

Best roast pork roll on chapel! They lightly toast the roll so it's nice and crunchy and it's filled with heaps of juicy pork and crackling covered in sauce with salad, for $6 such a bargain I don't have to feel guilty about buying lunch at work
Coffee And Food
Another good Vietnamese food with great price over at Chapel St. Pho are great but not so the spring roll. Too dry, may have be in the the freezer for a while. Vietnamese ice coffee is yummy but can go a bit lighter on the condense milk. Let's Eat Cakes

Amazing value and deliciously fresh and crispy pork! Will definitely be back. Love the service also. I really want to know what is in their chilli sauce - It could turn any meal into a great one!

Will definitely be back

The Pork roll experience is real! Upon entering Mister Truong's newest establishment I'm hit by refreshing nostalgia from my experiences at his previous venture in Brunswick West.

Let me tell you though - the quality of product has not faltered here, it is the same ol' Mister Troungs we've come to know & love - boasting delicious Vietnamese street food & cheap beers!
Keng Ronnapong
Cheap! But very very nice. The Pho' soup is the killer, balance, flavoursome, not too salty.
Not sure about other menus but just really satisfied with the Pho'.
Bang for your buck.
Nadia
Great reasonable prices for their Vietnamese rolls and smoothies. All tasty fillings. The tofu roll is fantastic. Great friendly service and cheap cheap cheap!

Great for rolls and fresh baked eats. Simple, no-nonsense, tasty and value for $$. Roast pork roll is my personal fave, a steal at $6. Summer smoothies are easy on the palette too. Mango ftw.
Toby Kopa
Best pork rolls in Melbourne for $8. Very very cheap and will fill you up. Great service and the staff are friendly. Easy to get to, just a short walk from Windsor station, and is in a funky chapel street spot.
Ash Halford
The most disappointing thing about moving from West Brunswick was moving away from Mr. Truong's.
The most exciting thing in the world is.... he's now opened around the corner from my work in Windsor!!

No need to brave the tram to Victoria St anymore when you have the best rolls and pho right here. Everything on the menu is 5 star.. with the crispy pork easily scoring a 10 and at unbeatable prices too.

No more over priced over blown yuppie food! Thankyou!!!
Jade
Why you have to drive far away to Footscray or Richmond for PHO - Rice noodle soup and BANH MI - Vietnamese Rolls. They're here, Mister Truong's Chapel Street. With the service so nice, and the food SSOOO.... YUMMM.....
Their Noodle Soup is so TASTY. Fresh and authentic taste, i can say it's DELICIOUS UNTIL LAST DROP.
My friend had Roast Pork Rolls. The roll are full with perfect crackling pork and freshest salad in the crispy roll, very yummy. Also the price is so impressed, 2 for $7.
