Review Tacocat Taqueria - Windsor

Andrew L
Tacos are really nice. Each one was unique and the house made tortilla shells were delicious. Are they worth $8 a taco? In my opinion no, they are just too small at that price. The nachos were also a bit of a let down. The chili con carne was literally about a tablespoon worth, a stripe right down the middle. Again for $15 you'd expect more. Overall the tacos are good however it's just not worth the price.

Excellent place for tacos. They definitely have some interesting fusion tacos which make for a very interesting meal. Be warned though, it can get pretty pricey. You would probably want to head over on a Tuesday for the 2 for 1 deal if you want to try out everything

This place is an undiscovered gem ... Great Tacos and very friendly service. The tacos are not the typical you would find elsewhere. Definitely the ceviche is a favourite!! Great DoD artwork with TacoCat!!!

Absolutely delicious food, served by friendly staff. The taco combinations were unique, well presented and tasted amazing. Great cocktails too with fresh churros to finish. We'll be back!

Really good tacos and great service! I really enjoyed the fish and grasshopper tacos but the others were super good too - Try it!

Fun, relaxed place for a weekday dinner. Chicken tacos were the best. I tried this cricket taco and it wasn’t bad, but could be more flavourful

Bloody awesome!!! The food, service and ambiance is fantastic... perfectly tucked away from the madness of chapel, this is a wonderful hidden gem that can't be missed!!

Very average food wise. Service and decor was fun. But the tacos weren’t particularly tasty and not warm either. After two tacos (mushroom and jackfruit) and an appetiser ($30) I still went home hungry. Wouldn’t return, as another reviewer said, prefer mad mex or Zambero.

Excellent experience, we had five courses starting with corn chips and guacamole, baked corn, and sweet potato wedges (TRY THESE). Ordered three tacos each, all were flavoursome with a great touch of fresh salsa and lime. The churros were nicely crisp on the outside while still soft inside.

You will find a variety of well made tacos which will set you back $8.50 each. They are not too big so it will take around 5 or 6 to fill you up. The chicken wiyh wasabi and the soft shell crab tacos are standouts with well mixed flavours. There is also a grasshopper taco if you are willing to try.

Little bit disappointed to be honest considering this place has great reviews.
We ordered towards the end of the night via Ubereats. Some of the meals were a little bit cold but totally understandable due to travel etc.
The tacos had a really odd taste and were really doughy. One of our meals also had a very interesting taste/smell as if one of the ingredients had gone off. Only saving grace was their sweet potato chips IMO.
We came here for a Tuesday night AYCE Taco night with a Margarita to wash them down. Service was good and range of gourmet tacos was very interesting....try the “grasshopper”. Fillings / Toppings excellent ....wrap/ pita bread was a little unusual (maybe a gluten free option).

An average experience at Tacocat. The menu is tiny and doesn't offer many options. The grasshopper taco was sold out at 6pm. A lot of the tacos had weird deep fried noodles - they were unpleasant to eat and I left most of them on the plate. The mushroom taco was the best one that we tried. Nachos were okay but the large portion was small. The desserts took ages to come out. Deep fried tequila isn't worth getting BUT I would say that I wish they sold the lemon sorbet that came with the deep fried tequila separately since that was the best thing I ate all night! The Churros were weird, different from other places... The melted chocolate stuff was weird and difficult to eat.

My margarita was also a disappointment. Too much ice and it didn't taste much like a peach margarita at all - it was missing a peachy vibrant colour as well.

Would I return to Tacocat? Probably not. There's better Mexican places nearby unfortunately.

Incredibly impressed!! The fusion of flavours at Tacocat is out of this world and it's great to see culinary imagination combined with awesome customer service, all brought together to result in such a terrific outcome. Each dish that was presented last night was to savour and highly recommended, with special reference to the loaded con carne nachos which were absolutely divine - it is hard to believe that a bowl of nachos can be so flavoursome and remain so crisp throughout the meal - not one of the corn chips turned out soggy by the end of the meal. The regular size that I ordered was perfect for one person.

The soft shell crab taco was great, leaving a very warmish tinge in the mouth, but the special taco of the week (a kangaroo taco) was to die for and should be added as a regular item to the menu!! This taco was a work of art and an amazing blend of barbequed meat with citrus crumb that was incredibly thought out by the chef and crew.

Will certainly be back and am incredibly surprised that this venue is not more popular.

Love me a taco, they can really hit the spot. These are good & the combinations are new which keeps things interesting BUT i found the beef one a bit dry and in my opinion the price a bit exxy.

If you think you’ve tried it all when it comes to Mexican food in Melbourne, then think again. Tacocat is Windsor’s newest taqueria, serving Mexican-inspired street food but not as you know it. Tacocat is located at 118 High St, Windsor in the space formerly occupied by Korean café 9 ¾, just a block or two from Chapel Street. Step inside and you’ll find rustic style tables, an open view into the kitchen and a Day of the Dead inspired wall mural painted by Melbourne Graffiti artist, Awes, of local studio 90 degrees.

Taco cat offers authentic Mexican with a slight Asian twist at extremely reasonable prices and high quality. We thoroughly enjoyed all dishes we tried- the nachos were delicious and generous in toppings. The corn was tasty and had a lovely combination of toppings. The raw tuna taco was fresh and light. The mushroom taco was extremely flavorsome. The Japanese chicken taco was crunchy and great. Our only hesitation was on the beef pho taco which although presented beautifully (like the rest of the food) seemed extremely chewy and dry. We can't wait to see them develop their alcohol and dessert menus which we assume will make them even better. We believe that good Mexican is hard to find in Melbourne and Taco cat has done a great job!

Sadly On our visit the Tequila bar was not yet open as Licences were not finalized, that is ok though as it was BYO and water was also supplier. The tortilla chips were tasty and quite buttery deliciousness! To accompany this was 2 salsas one red and one green! the green was so nice full of spice, freshness and it made you want to go back for more. The red one was chopped onion and tomatoes that tasted like they were soaked in something which was nice but i think if it was a bit more saucy it would be greatly improved. The Corn, Looked great and tasted as good. 2 small pieces ideal for sharing! Full of great flavors sauce and texture.

Went on Tuesday night with a group of friends and the food was absolutely delish!! Between us all we had nearly every starter and taco on the menu and loved everything...special mention to the Grasshopper Taco! Even better was the fact it was 2 for 1 Taco's and BYO so on top of the great food was even better value. Will definitely be back soon!

I love seeing new exciting street food style eateries opening about the place. This is no exception! Speedy service and friendly staff get a tick as does the decor and menu. I am always nervous heading out to eat because I am on (and not by choice) a low FODMAP diet so no wheat, gluten, fructose, sorbitol, mannitol or lactose. The menu was transparent and ingredients were clearly listed which put my mind at ease. I had the Pho taco on a Tuesday night so thats 2 for 1! Very tasty. I also had the sweet potato twice cooked chips which were awesome. I would definitely recommend popping in for a meal that wont break the bank. I look forward to trying more of the menu.

Been here a couple of times now - they've definitely ironed out any issues from initial opening. Had the Pork, Raw Tuna and Prawn Tacos last night and they were all delicious. Staff are super friendly, and cost was reasonable ($73).
I don't think the reviews are suspect, this place is comfortable, quick and tasty - exactly what you want from a taco restaurant.

Love this place, really good tacos and a really cute cosy fit out. The chargrilled prawn and mango salsa taco special was absolutely delicious. A really simple menu that packs a punch. If you don't like spice, make sure you specify as they do it properly here. I will be back for sure.

Interesting twist on your usual taco. Pretty decent but did not really hit the mark. Appreciate them going for a bit more chew in their taco but at times they tasted dry. Unfortunately if you are going to charge over 8 bucks for one it needs to be spot on and they were hit n miss. Points for the nachos and BYO.

this place has a weighted average score of 2.8 based on 5 ratings. There are 4 written reviews and all of the are greater than 4.5 but from suspect reviewers with only a couple of reviews to their name. So I'm going to give you a real review and rating!

The place has a nice vibe. Cool mural and friendly staff.

I only tried two dishes so this is not exactly an exhaustive review. I loved the creativity of the menu- and I wish I'd had the guts to try grasshoppers!

The ceviche tostada was not a ceviche but it was delicious pan fried seafood- tasty fish chunks juicy prawns but I didn't feel the tiny scallops added much flavour. It has an interesting coconut sauce on the side. The tostada was ok but the oil poured over the dish was a bit too much for me.
The other dish was a pleasant raw tuna taco with red cabbage and wasabi mayo. The tortilla was a bit dried out from the grill but overall ok.

I really want these guys to succeed but it is early days and I think they with a few refinements it will be great.

Return visits:
Take two was much better food, the hand made tortillas were soft warm and tasty. Service was friendly but very very very slow out of the kitchen. The new Drinks list looks enticing but could be part of the reason for the slow down.

Take three- keeps getting better! We dropped in for a quick snack and explained we didn't have much time so perhaps we would get take away- we were assured that it would be quick and it was !!

#4 Sadly the raw tuna taco is gone😢 and service is still very very slow. We had the crab and the prawn tacos. Good flavour but not as good as the tuna was.

Had the corn fritters for breakfast and they were absolutely delicious! Great vibe & great coffee...Can't wait to go back & try something else!

Enjoyed our meal at Taco Cat, the staff were really friendly and really enjoyed the pulled pork taco! Grasshopper Taco was wild! Solid menu with some great signature dishes, can't wait for the Tequila bar to arrive.
