Review Ghin Kopi - Windsor

AussieSomchai
Definitely the worst pad kra pow I've ever had. It is nothing like an authentic Thai pad kra pow at all. A real Thai pad kra pow would have chicken/beef/pork/seafood, holy basil, chill & some Thai seasoning (fish sauce, oyster sauce, green lid sauce). But what I got was so many vegetables, filled with mushrooms, zucchini, carrots, sweet potato, cabbage, etc. . It also only had ONE LEAF OF BASIL, which defeats the entire purpose of pad kra pow(kra pow meaning holy basil)to which they used the wrong time of basil as well, since the correct type is holy basil(basil is holapa, holy basil kra pow). I had asked for spicy, but they gave me at most 4 chillies in the entire dish, which for a Thai dish is not even the bare minimum. The worst part yet was that they added bell pepper, which completely overpowers any spice or saltiness that the dish has with this unbearable sweetness. I paid 18.90 dollars for this when I could've easily got something 100x better in Thailand for 2 dollars easily! If I could even find a positive it would be that the give a fair bit of food, but it seems that this restaurants motto is "quantity over quality" Just extremely disappointed, waste of money, never coming back here.

I have been in the restaurant many times since last time to give them another chance , food is actually really good so can't help it . Service improved massively and staff is super polite . Therefore I am changing my rating to 5 star and recommend the place for a great Thai food experience šŸ‘šŸ™

The pad Thai was not very tasty and left my stomach feeling bad. The chicken satay skewers were yummy but the curry puffs had more of a samosa texture than a curry puff. I would not eat here again or recommend it.
Nacka Smith
japanese kind of style tiny narrow shop, would be good if they redesigned so the counter space had the cooking happen in front of you.... but food was really great judged over several meals & both takeaway & eat in was same high standard.

Tom yum chicken here is the best, I love this place for soups mostly.

Out of interest I went through my emails and I've had Krua Thai delivered at least 44 times and never had a dud. By far my most go-to delivery place (and I think the first time I've left a review for somewhere). Hit up the beef curry puffs, fried rice (with pork for me, chicken for the wife), and the crispy pork with Chinese broccoli, all great.

15-20 seats inside, 2 tables outside. Not with big seating place but Asian style. The flavor is good and tasty, the price with the size is reasonable in this busy area. Not a decent place for formal dining, but a casual touch for family.
Mark Liang
Great food. Musman beef and Red curry duck with veg. Yum. Not much of a dine in experience, only 12 seats. No toilet have to go to McD across the road. I would go back.
More Food And Wine
It got an extra half a point as the beer was cold and cheap.Ā The staff don't care - sloppy t-shirts staring at their phones instead of clearing tables and ensuring there's enough cutlery.Ā But worse, the chefs care even less.Ā Odd tom yum with over cooked prawns, bland green curry which seemed to have been watered down and missing the lovely creaminess you expect.Ā Ā A noodle dish which tasted of old oil and included a random mussel will probably lead to a bit of 3:00 eye-of-the-needle activity.
Savannah McKay
Fresh, flavourful and genuine thai food. Love the menu and fairly priced! They can make a really good coffee too, but it depends on whose working because I know I've had the new girl a few times. The Beef & Chinese Broccoli dish is my go-to when coming home after uni, so so good.
TillyEats
If I had to choose one cuisine to eat every night it would be Thai food. The bright punchy flavours, all the herbs and chillies, the freshness in every dish, oh my I couldnā€™t imagine anything better. Ghin Kopiā€™s menu is as a large as me and with pictures! I love seeing what a dish looks like, especially when iā€™ve never had it before. And what do you do when you have a menu that big and choose just a few dishes seems impossible? You order a feast.
Game Of Scones
A small but nice little thai restaurant. I like my yellow chicken curry, it had lots of chicken and a bit of zest. Serving could be a little bit bigger but it was pretty good.
Maddison Jacka
Wasn't terrible, nor was it amazing. I wasn't disappointed but I probably wouldn't rush back to eat there again. Would recommend it for a no-fuss, quick and easy dinner.
Shijing Wang
The flavour here is quite strong and sweet. The Pad Thai, my favourite Thai dish, here is on average. The fish tastes fresh but the sauce is so strong that it covers the fish. The price is reasonable.
Sehryn Belle
Dreadful. Inedible. Major disappointment! Worst Tom Yum I've ever tasted. Horribly salty, sickeningly sugary, body shudderingly vinegary - basically, inedible! I tried and failed to eat it.
Anne
Ordered Ā takeaway twice and possibly the worst Thai food I have eaten in Melbourne. The food wasn't fresh, very flavorless and far to expensive for what it was. Will not be returning.
Rhys McCarthy
The worst Thai food I've ever eaten.
Order was disgusting and bland, on top of that the order was wrong (missing the chicken from my Pad Thai).
So I paid money but never ate or received my order.

BEWARE of this restaurant!! Absolutely terrible service and food.
World In A Bite
Food 0.5 - I'm disappointed disappointed šŸ˜” somtum tasted like sweet chili sauce! I swear! It doesn't taste like somtum!

Service 1 - average

Decors & atmosphere 1 - dim light , good drinking atmosphere! šŸ™ŠšŸøšŸ»

I've been here a few times. Sometimes it's great and sometimes a bit average. The staff are friendly enough but often look like they're not fully "present" or "mindful" that I am a customer and therefor a king. It seems they would rather be on reality TV but wouldn't we all and this behaviour is common with people in Windsor / Prahran so I don't expect too much. Anyway, tonight's chicken fried rice was a bit claggy and low on vegetables and nobody there told me I looked hot so this instantly results in the loss of a star. The decor is ok too but that isn't as important as people finding you attractive. I'll let you know if I have better luck next time.
GARY BENDER
The pad Thai wasn't good, it was too wet and tastes bad. Really disappointed. Took ages to get my food. Unlikely to return. Bad service as well.
Nick Janko
Mostly just get takeaway from here. Always on time and the food is always good so no complaints really. There's heaps of Thai places around Prahran/Windsor/South Yarra but I keep going back to this one.
Nathan
A local favourite and you can't beat the quality for the price. Delivery is very reliable and with takeaway you're not waiting for longer than 15 mins. Would easily recommend for anyone looking for cheap Asian food on Chapel.
Jesse
Have not eaten at the restaurant but had take away a few times via eatnow. The food is always fresh and hot and delicious. The Tom yum fried rice is a favourite and the satay sticks, roti and Penang curry were great as well. It's a small thing but I really like the food containers they use and the last order the food came in a reusable shopping bag and some free prawn crackers. :)
Yetish Moloo
Ordered from them twice now and both times the food experience was amazing. The food is great food for what you are paying. It is very well packed and it is delivered sooner than what they tell you. Its starting to turn into my go to place to order.
May
Ordered takeaway from this Thai cafe.
Yum: Phad Thai Goong with prawns ! Coconut rice - really fragrant

Meh : Thai chicken green curry - despite ordering for mild heat, the curry still presents as spicy and we can't really taste the flavour with all that heat ! Very Good portion though ..
The Dodgy End
The food here is horrific. Ā The fish cakes were like cardboard and neither tasted of fish or were cake like. Ā The masaman curry was so dry and didn't fall to pieces like it should, and the soft shell crab was like deep fried daddy long legs rather than crabs. Ā This place used to be ok ... now avoid at all costs.
Tiges
The food is quite good... Som Tam not spicy enough but fresh and I'll order it spicy next time. Kana Moo Krob was delicious but it is really rich the way they make it and the crispy pork a little dry.
I will go back and try again because the food quality was good, my 3.0 is based more on the below standard service than the food.
"JT" Jeffrie Trika
Fancy Thai place ....

This strip used to be forgotten, famous for it's second hand dealer, now it's a different story.

Ordinary coffee for a place with a coffee name, but their food is quite good.

Enjoyable and trust that they'll keep on improving.
Melissa Erin
I just ordered the massaman with beef, it's so bland/gross that I'm not sure if I'm going to finish it or throw it out. Never ordering from here again!

I fell in love with this place right after stepping in. The decorations and furnishings definitely transported me from Windsor to somewhere very exotic! Very comfortable and lovely place to hang out!
Although it was lunch time, the restaurant wasn't very busy, which added to the relaxing feel of the joint.
Service was decent, and we ordered our food quickly as we were famished! The menu is large (literally), and quite extensive. I tried the pad Thai with egg net, which was an innovative twist to the typical dish. The serving was very large, and definitely worth the $13.90. It was quite fragrant and the egg was really fluffy! However, I've had better pad Thais elsewhere so it wasn't that special (except for the egg net).
Also for some reason, my friend's pad thai was way sweeter than mine (overly sweet), so I'm subtracting 0.5points off the rating xD
Anyway, this is the perfect place to chill and catch up with people. Very relaxing and prices are very reasonable!

Went here the other as many other Thai options were closed. Pretty average, agree with another reviewer that it's not comparable to the standard of Thai on Chapel. Chicken in pandanus was basically cubes of deep fried chicken with no flavour, and a dish of commercially available sweet chilli sauce. Green curry was ok. Rice a bit overcooked. Sorry guys but I doubt I will be back as there are so many better options nearby at similar price point.
Hungry
Good but no The Thai on Chapel.
Nic
Service is absolutely appalling. Waited for half an hour before being told they were too busy to serve us (there were three tables inside).
Coffeeaddict
Went for dinner on a Friday night. The food was ok not bad not good. But when we went to pay they refused to give us a receipt.!! They said that we needed to tell them we wanted one before we paid not after as they had already "deleted" our order. I have never been told that anywhere else. Hmmm sounds a bit odd. šŸ˜³
James Helsham
An absolute hidden gem on Chapel St and Melbourne in general! Have been twice now, both times fantastic food and prompt service! Have rolled out twice now from self inflicted over eating! I'd recommend the soft shell crab dish, super spicy and will get you going!
Ramen Girl
It's really hard to review a Thai restaurant when you've only had the Pad Thai. So I guess this is really a Pad Thai review. The Pad Thai was fine but not exceptional. Just like this review is fine and not exceptional. LOL
Liveeatdrinklovefood
Delivery. Ghin Kopi has quickly become a favourite when ordering a take away Green chicken curry. I ordered one last night and it was delivered but with no chicken and had the added ingredient of mushroom which I am not familiar with having after ordering here a number of times. It came within 45 minutes and was still nice but it definitely tastes better when they put the chicken in....
Micheal Pikket
Had their Massaman beef curry, which is probably one of the most varied dishes I had, many tastes to be discovered of sweet and chili flavors, very good mix. Though I asked for the beef to be minced or cut in very small pieces which didn't happen but the tasty soup made me forget that quickly! Didn't have any other dishes from there yet but keen to try other on my next visit.
GStram
Food quality going downhill. As a Windsor local, this used to be one of my favourite palces. It has sadly gone down. Last time I ate there, I actually got some some stomach issues. The chicken must have been off so I defintely wont be going back.
Reneekbowden
I used to love this Thai but has really gone down hill in the last few months. Maybe they have changed chefs!!
Stir fries are full of cheap veggies, coconut rice takeaway containers are only half full and the garlic prawn crackers are the worst I've had. I think I'll change my local Thai to somewhere else.
Leighana Horaz
Yum. The design of the restaurant was interesting, the water glasses, wobbled but they couldn't tip over. While waiting for the food, it was fun to actually play with the glasses.

The menu's were gigantic, and they had lots of pictures of the food. Whilst the cocktails were cheap and delicious.
What really tipped this was the deserts. We took them home, and devoured them. Delicious :)
The Dodgy End
It seems the food here is a bit hit and miss and my have deteriorated a little from when it first opened. Newly opened next door is the exciting My Little Gogo so Ghin Kopi will have to stay on top of their game to compete.

Worst!!!. WORST ever!! Staff are rude. Took nearly 2 hours for a delivery in Prahran. No apologies what so ever, no attempt to rectify the situation. Staff said hang on 5 mins we will figure it out and call you back and never did!!! after 2 hours of waiting you have lost me!

I will never eat here again
Brooke Irvine
The best thai going around!. Fantastic thai! ghin kopi has hands down the best thai in the chapel street area. I order delivery from here about once a week as my treat. The ingredients are always so fresh. I always get the chicken green curry and its always surperb. some thai restaurants the chicken you get is fatty and not nice but this chicken is nice chicken breast. i see some reviews say that the delivery takes ages, i have never had problem with the delivery and i always recieve within 30-45 minutes max of ordering. keep up the great work!
Info
I have ordered from here previously and thought it was good. Definitely not the case anymore...

We ordered our food at 9:30pm with an expected delivery time at 10:15pm. At 10:20 the food was nowhere in sight so I called to ask where it was, I was told the delivery person had already left. 10 minutes later with the food nowhere to be seen, I called again. Finally the food arrived at 10:40pm.

The food was totally COLD and SOGGY.

I called to arrange for them to replace the food and was told their kitchen had now closed. Rather than apologising, they decided it was best that they would give us the same meal the following night. The woman on the phone seemed incapable of understanding why I didn't want their food the next night.

At this point I demanded a refund, I was kept on hold, while they called their boss. At this point their "solution" was that they would refund it as long as their delivery person could collect the food the following day. I explained that I was not particularly eager to wait around yet again and was then told they would not provide a refund.

Obviously will be speaking to Menulog to contest this.

AVOID, THEY ARE TERRIBLE

We have persisted with this place visiting regularly for a few months. The manager is simply rude every time we visit, the service sloppy and very poor. We are sad because the food is quite good, just a manager who should not be dealing with the public.
Lizlamsam
1 hour 40 minutes for takeaway to be delivered. We placed our order through menulog, 1 hour after we placed our order we got the first phone call from the delivery guy asking where our house was, 40 minutes later he found us, cold food! I phoned the restaurant 3 times, they giggled and said oh new delivery guy, so sorry!
I'm sorry too you've permanently lost our business
Plenty of others to choose from, good food with good delivery service.
David Dang
The food is good but delivery service needs to improve. I ordered the food and had to wait 1.5hr to get a call from the delivery guy saying he couldn't find the address. I've never had any problems with delivery before. He was even sitting in the car asking me to come out to pick it up.

Worst Green Curry I've ever had! EVER. I was starving and didn't eat it.
Been here loads and normally love it. I will never go back after today. Food like this should never go out the door. 7/4/15. No other way to offer feedback. Sorry!

-----18 Nov, 2014-----

Food is amazing - but lady on phone can never get address right!. We love this food. Packaged well. Delivered fast, well kind of, the girl has never ever got our address right. She is actually hopeless. We try and spell it but nope she gets it wrong again. 5 times now.
Oh well, will order online next time!

Thai favourite!!!. I love this place :)
I went here in April with 3 other girls and we did the banquet. Then went again Saturday night with my Mr.
I actually love the over sized menus, and the staff are lovely.

The place is well situated close to Windsor station on a hustly bustly street.

As for food, paad thai, glass noodle salad, fish cakes, green and penang curry, excellent coconut rice and Tom yum soup!

Great prices and portion size!
Keibrowne2008
Excellent Restaurant. Ghin Kopi service, dining experience and location all make this a wonderful restaurant. The staff have always been friendly and speed at which food is served is also a plus for the hungry patron.
Will definitely be returning to eat here again. Thank you Team Kopi :D
Mmarory
Excellent service and food!. My partner and I eat here regularly. The food is excellent and the service is great. We've never had to wait over 10-15minutes for our meals to arrive. The serving size is fairly decent - satisfactory. The meals are bursting with flavour and the vegetables are crisp and fresh. The restaurant itself is fairly small but clean and welcoming. We've never had an issue with the staff. It's a bonus that the food is really cheap in spite of the quality and quantity. You definitely do get more than what you pay for here. If you love thai, you must give this place a go! We've no complaints :D
Happy Camper
Firstly the oversized menu's in a cramped space is not a great idea.
The service was terrible. The place was not busy at all and it took at least 40 mins for our order to be taken while I noticed the staff just having a good old chat, and couldn't even get a second drink.

The prawn spring rolls that were ordered came out raw, then came back cut in half!!

The chicken in the pad Thai was barely cooked through and a little bland.

The beef salad was rather nice but more of a wet stir fry.

Will not be going back.
Cherrycherry
Best reasonably priced Thai in Melbourne. As an avid Thai food lover, I am pretty fussy when it comes to Thai food and have tried every restaurant in the South Yarra/Prahran/Richmond/Windsor area. Ghin Kopi is my new fave! The vegetables are incredibly fresh and, unlike many places, the meat actually doesn't taste reheated. When you ask for a 'mild' curry it doesn't burn your mouth out like other places and the desserts are incredible too. My fave dish is the red curry duck. The coconut rice is also probably the best I have tasted in Melbourne.
CowTown ChowHound
A lucky find. After discovering that the restaurant we'd decided to meet friends at for lunch was closed (like many others) on the Saturday before Easter we came across this place.

We ordered Satay Beef to start with and it was quite good and the serving size was plenty. The sauce was thick and in much higher quantity than I would have expected but the taste was good. We also had the seafood coconut soup and an order of Pad Thai.

The soup was hot and spicy with good Thai "YUM" flavours and the seafood was cooked well. I'd have rather liked the tails had been removed from the prawns, but this is my own preference. The Pad Thai was tasty but lacked a little flavour and could have used some crushed peanut for texture.

All in all we were pleased with our meal and would not hesitate to return.
Jessica
Authentic Padthai Chicken !!. This place is epic. The skinny guy makes everything carefully and with nothing per-prepared. Padthai is amazing. Never a bad call
Matty
Wonderful, flavourful food every time! Flat noodles with chicken and broccoli was amazing, as too is the beef with ginger!
Vicki_mb
Its gone downhill!. This used to be our favourite Thai, but alas it has gone the way of many restaurants - great in the beginning then downhill from there. The Lemongrass Chicken entree used t be lovely, just not good any more. They don't care, make mistakes with orders.
Anchorsandaeroplanes
Don't waste your time. Stopped in for a visit a couple of days ago, because I had never been. I asked to look at a menu, and the cashier just stared at me while i was reading it. We took the menu outside and told her "we're going to have a seat outside". We proceeded to wait 15 minutes before finally leaving. There were 3 tables eating inside and a couple people paying for food, but no reason why we couldn't have had our orders taken. It was a waste of time and the staff looked miserable.
Nettie
Love this place. It's underrated, affordable and delicious!
Sonia-n
Yeeeee. They have the best Pad-Thai and for something like $12, it is a massive portion size and is sure to fill you up. All my friends loved it and the food is packed with flavour, can't wait to return!
Kizza
Fast wifi,, always lovely coffee. Ghin Kopi has really really fast internet. and the girl at the counter offers up the password with a smile (some places offer wifi but then feel begrudged when god forbid you ask to use it. freeloaders! eh!) I love the coffer here, always get it to take away - but sat in today. very nice tasting coffee...by pass a lot of coffee joints on my walk to ghin kopi. it is just really nice here! never eaten here - just because i never feel like thai in the day time, and i am rarely in the area at night. although its not the nicest setting for a meal if you ask me. but hey who did!?
Spicy Delight
Yum. I went here with a friend last night and really enjoyed the food, we had the duck curry and chicken basil stir fry. Great flavours and good portion sizes, would come back again!

Dinner At Ghin Kopi. Tonight we will be dining at Ghin Kopi, I have read the very 'mixed' reviews and am somewhat puzzled by what we will find ...but I think I will go with "good food" and "good price" and I guess the service will be the one I will focus on after and I will write about the whole package deal later tonight.

But, from the menu online that I glanced at, "impressed" and 'eager' to try it...If we are happy I am bringing my good friends on Friday night back to show them what I experienced, but if it is NOT good>>not a chance!

Crossing my fingers that tonight we will be happy with the food, the service and price..

WE WILL BE BACK. I have just been reading the past reviews for this Ghin Kopi, well we had a totally different experience. We loved it. It was funky, cosy and a great atmosphere. We went on a Tuesday night, we were walking past not sure where to eat, this place looked very inviting. Service was fast and friendly. I had Tom Yum Chicken and my boyfriend had Tom Yum Prawn, wow! It was just delicious, so many flavours. I asked for extra chilli in mine, it was just perfect. We eat a lot of Tom Yum (and Thai) in Australia and Thailand, and this soup was way up there with the best! We also had Pork Spring Rolls, yummo!! Then we shared Pad Thai Chicken, wow even better. I cannot imagine why people complain about the food here? Our experience here was fantastic and we will definitely be back again. Great Value for money also, 1 x wine, 1 x beer, spring rolls, 2 x tom yum soup and pad thai. $45 cheap for amazing food and good sized serves!!
Gin
Quiet little place where care is taken to ensure special dietary needs are properly understood. Food is tasty and plentiful, but you may need to request additional rice.
Natalie K
This was thee worst restaurant experience I have ever had.
My vegetarian, noodle and tofu soup came with 3 tiny pieces of tofu and a tiny portion of noodles and was tasteless.
They didn't have chopsticks, the toilet was dirty with no toilet paper.
She charged me $13 for the soup abd when I gave her feedback she told me I was annoying.
Food bad, service appalling, hygiene bad! Oh and free wifi wasn't working.
It used to be a good place I don't know what happened. Oh and there was dog poo outside with salt poured over it.
What the???
Jemy2010
I've had tap water that had more flavour than the breakfast bruschetta at ghin kopi, but the coffee was surprisingly good and the service was ok. Not the sort of place I'd visit a second time
Jason May
Once again - ordered food and wine and then told to pay the bill before eating. (And this was at 9pm) Have basic restaurant manners left this place? Forget staying here and spending more money...... This is the second time this has happened - too much choice on Chapel St - gave second chance - see no need to go back again!
Brieandme
Great. I've eaten here four times.Menu is huge Each time the food was great seriously well priced So cheap!!! . The service was more than ok with a smile
Julian
Food consistent, service lacks. I've eaten here three times. Once eat in, twice take away. Each time the food was great. The service is a bit lackluster. Apparently you can order your food at the table, but have to walk up the barista to order and pay for a coffee separately. Very weird. But it's a great chicken pad thai.
James Dawkins
WAY TOO HARD. Inconsistent except for the service which varies between non-existent or really bad. Not worth the effort much better places to go locally. Give it a miss
KSP
Terrible service, a massive wait and food came out burnt, dry and
Cold and I was the only one in he restaurant. Never going back
T.harris
Unique little cafe. For me this place is another place for breakfast / brunch -- as I am the what people call 'breakfast person' -- I love breakfast most ... I'm a fan of all the breakfast place. Ghin Kopi has the best poach egg for breakfast I have ever had -- even we had to wait to have table but it was able to create my best memory meal there !!! A brunch ... one was Eggs Florentine (POACHED EGGS W/SPINACH, CRISPY BACON & MORNAY SAUCE) ... healthy dish indeed ... in fact it contained all my favourites in ... poached egg, bacon, and spinach ... Yeah !!!

No ordinary place. This funky place is no ordinary Thai restaurant. Right across the road from the Windsor train station on Chapel Street. It is in the heart of our cafe culture right here in Melbourne. Iā€™ve visited this funky restaurant a couple of times now and find myself at home listening to the good tunes and ordering my coffee. The front half of the restaurant boasts floor to ceiling windows that showcase its prime corner location to the world passing by. Fantastic grand light fixtures and features throughout the dining section behind me cast a warm glow on an otherwise grey day. There is also a function room upstairs that has a view right down the guts of Chapel St. Awesome place to be for breakfast, lunch, dinner or an espresso fix like I am today.

My flat white, is calling my name and is inevitably a pleasing cup of coffee. It doesnā€™t last long, gone in minutes! I would have liked it a little hotter, perhaps. I finish with a nice round espresso, extracted by my attentive barista Billy! He is a great host and adds to the fantastic atmosphere at Ghin Kopi!
Felix
I'm not sure what made me feel more sick, Jason Derulo on repeat for the whole dinner or prawns that must've been sitting out for days. The veggie spring rolls were still frozen inside. I was really disappointed. I can't even think of he words to describe the dessert. The service I'm afraid to say was also terrible, we were mostly ignored and every request was met with a huff.
Never again, and I hope all who read this boycott this place.
Such a let down for the Thai cuisine.
Liam
Utter crap! Don't waste your money!
Dave Howard
Absolutely rubbish. Satay sauce was weak as. Prawns tasted old and they were chewy. Packet food for entrees and I wanted to throw up after dinner. Puke. Never again.
I Love Eating Out
Authentic Thai. We went to Ghin Kopi using a voucher for lunch. There werenā€™t many clients, the service was excellent, we were asked if we were ready for the next course and the food came out quickly, we had several seafood courses. We have eaten in Thailand many times over the years and we love Thai food. Ghin Kopi food was excellent and retained much its Thai roots, my only complaint was that the calamari was probably made from frozen product and was not particularly flavoursome but overall the food was typically Thai and quite enjoyable. This restaurant is well worth a visit.
NomNomNom
Had a scoopon seafood banquet - Amazing! Spring rolls fabulous! Very well priced too. Will definitely go back.
Louise Murphy
Great for takeaway. I love the food here, although it is a little overpriced and the service can be odd.
Have sat in for breakfast here, and also had takeaway for dinner a couple of times. No complaints with the quality of the food - delicious.
Watercress
Waitress, why are you so moody?. Food is okay. Not great, but still edible. Service is rather angry to say at least.
Peter
Not impressed. Food took 60 minutes to come out, and in a group of 6, then came out separately. Mine was cold. When I asked them to warm it up they crashed around the kitchen so I could hear them, microwaved my dish then loaded it with some much chilli it was inedible. 3 other sets of diners beside us sent food back for being cold too. Ghin Kopi won't be getting my business again and I'd discourage others to go there too.
FueledbyFood
Got Vegetarian Pad Thai. A bit underwhelmed. Dessert was kinda expensive as well.
Big Dave
Service was friendly, food was lovely, also reasonably quick, I'll go again..
Goodfoodnotguide
Food it's ok, service it's absolutely awfull , slow, bad communication skills. Could do much better if was some guidance... maybe also don't answer the phone if u don't know how to do so..
Mel
First time I went, service was hopeless although the food was reasonable. Second time, service was marginally better. Third time, food was awful. I recommend the restaurant look into improving their customer service. I won't go back based on the inconsistencies with both food and service. The prices aren't particularly cheap and I expect good service and consistently tasty food for the money. How hard can it be to get Thai right?!
Stylx
Will never go back. Not authentic Thai food at all. After had the terrible tom yum soup, didn't really expect much from this restaurant. The Tom Yum soup is very sweet and sour, and no tom yum taste at all. Service is not good..the waitress never smile. When someone asked for a table for one, she said it's fully booked, but 2 people came in without a booking, she gave them a table. Went there with a scopoon voucher, thought the thai style fish will be good..but end up it's just a deep fried fish with a sweet dipping sauce and a sweet chilli sauce..i think I can do it better at home.
Dick Real
Raw Springies. Just like Mark before me, I was served raw pork spring rolls as part of the $9.50 Thai tasting dish, which also includes fish cakes and curry puffs. No problem, everyone makes mistakes. So I sent them back and was brought a fresh serve. Again, the spring rolls were raw. One might think they'd want to get that right. So I sent those back and told them I didn't want any more. When presented with the bill, what do you know, they charged me full price for the Thai tasting dish. I asked for a discount, the 2 girls behind the counter looked perplexed, discussed it between themselves and reluctantly gave me 10% off the entire bill which amounted to a discount of $2.70. Surely, surely anybody running a restaurant or cafe knows how to handle that type of situation. Don't they? It's not hard. Now I will never go back, I'll tell all my friends about it and I'll probably even write an online review.

Food good, drinks service not so good. We've been there around five times now and always share the Green Paw Paw Chicken salad for entree then vary our mains. Consistantly good food and we've been to Thailand many times but the drinks service is poor. If they could get that sorted they'd be very good and we'd take guests but not as it is now.

NOt impressed. Went there once before food was ok but we asked for entree and main to come separately - all came at once very annoying. Second time waitress told us $9 per table for byo then when it came to paying bill we were charged for each bottle. Disputed bill and were made to stay here arguing with them over THIER mistake for 30 minutes while they contacted the waitress to clarify this. Not impressed. Manager should have just corrected the bill instead argued with us wrecked the experience food nothing special will not go back.

Needs a lot of work. This was our second time ordering takeaway the first phad thai was okay, nothing special. Tonight I ordered the tofu and vegetable stir fry with extra broccoli and it was an oily sludge without a piece of broccoli and dried up spongy tofu. We also had the pandanus chicken which shouldn't be fried and dry but was just that. This place needs a lot of work to compete with much better options on Chapel street.

Place is nice but food is so so. We ordered the soft shell crab with mild curry, probably we have too high of expectation and sorry to say that we ended up quite disappointed.

Asked for 'Thai spicey' when I ordered the Khao Soi and it was hardly spicey at all... Won't be going back...

Tasty thai. Oh my god. We went to this litttle unsuspecting restaurant recently and I had the thai beef salad, which I think was the best I have ever had. It was so good I didnt want it to end! My fellow diner next to me had similar feelings about his tom yum. I have already gone back! The beef salad was quite different in appearance the 2nd time round, and with a bit less juice, but was still fabulous. My partner had the crab which he commended, although complaining it could have had a few more vegies! The servings are generous and well priced. That goes for the food and the wine by the glass. Will definitely be making this a regular. My only comment would be that it is very fast. If you are after a long slow dinner you may need to do so me stalling :)

Not terrible but not ideal. Whilst their take-away food is generous, filling, hot and somewhat tasty, when you are eating in and are waiting for each individual dish, you want it to be tasty and sadly it lacks in this area. When you are stuffing your face out of plastic containers, this food is great but when we ate in the restaurant, it lacked that real "satisfaction" factor. The curry was not flavoured enough, the service was erratic (our rice came out about 10 minutes before the curry!), the food was a little bit dry and just didnt hit a home run.

I came with a scoopon so for what i actually paid it was good value but I wouldn't want to pay much more for fairly run of the mill, bland thai food.

Great!. Went with a voucher which was accepted with no problems. Excellent food and great service. The entrees were great however did not give as much value for money as the mains which were delicious and generous serves. We had no hope of eating all that we had ordered (two people, two entrees and two mains) so took enough home to have a good lunch at work the next day.

Good value and fantastic food.

Absolutely disgusted by a male waiter and barrister comments when he served us with our food! He label us "PIG" when he was placing our third main on our table. Later on when we finish and was waiting at the front to pay he snigger at us because of the fact that we have a scoopon voucher. The other waitress tries to hide her smirk at us. They made us feels like we ate their food without paying when in fact we had a prepaid voucher. We walk away unhappy with the whole experience. If a restaurant uses website like scoopon to promote their business, shouldn't this waitresses be made aware to treat customers in the same manner so that we may return. Lastly the food is all too bland.

Chickened out. After being over delighted by the quality of Asian cuisine the day before in the CBD, I had high hopes to indulge again on one of the last days of my trip. I've eaten so well on Chapel Street in the past and I am baffled as to how standards like this are allowed to continue.

The waiter didn't seem to have a clue what was going on or just lacked the mental capacity to assist with dietary requirements. After much desire to walk out on the basis of this and an incredibly dirty spoon on our table, we were weighed down on the seats by the fact we had pre paid the voucher... and also the texture of the wall kept me stuck in the same position.

Not entirely sure of what we ordered, our entrees came out. I got a clear broth soup and my partner got some spring rolls, samosa and something I couldn't figure out. All so much blandness, we had to order soft drinks to get some taste into our mouths.

I still tried to stay positive for our mains but I think my energy would've been better used for running on a treadmill for 20 minutes to power a house for a sole minute. The garlic chicken taste wise was the only thing remotely edible with some semi fresh vegetables. The pad thai came out next and it looked like noodles with a jar of sauce just plonked onto a plate. It tasted horrible. FIrst you were over powered by fish sauce and then this incredibly disgusting sweet chilli sauce that was like jam. The tofu was like cardboard and I didn't dare to try the chicken in the dish. We also ordered a chicken salad but it was burnt and so dry I should've just eaten bark off a tree. I think what pushed me over the edge was the steamed rice was just on the verge of being mush and again kept with the theme it was bland.

Needless to say not much of any of the dishes were eaten. I have never wanted to leave a restaurant so badly before and would not waste an hour of a holiday there again. How people continue to go there as regulars shows that they have not ventured too far or their taste buds are out of whack. You should walk out of a restaurant not thinking the best tasting thing was the lift and I could cook better than that.

So Yum & Authentic. Proper Thai food at last - i recommend the grilled beef salad, lemon grass chicken skewers and jungle curry.

These guys also have a restaurant in elsternwick called 'pad thai' and i think 'ghin kao' in the city. all equally fabulous.

Having just returned from Thailand I can truly say that Ghin Kopi hits the nail on the head. I've eaten here 4 times and have made my way half way though their menu. The food comes portioned appropriately, not sparse nor generous but perfect for their rich flavorful dishes. The coconut chicken soup is an amazing blend of crisp fruit, tender chicken, juicy tomatoes in s Silky coconut broth. Also the papaya salad (true authentic Thai dish sold on almost every street stall throughout Thailand) brings together the fundamental elements with modern presentation and flavored to create a dish that I believe is better then any of the real thing I tried whilst overseas. Try their soft shell crab and phad Thai. MMmmmm the gem of this restaurant is their sticky black rice with fresh lychee and thick hot coconut creme. For reasonable prices, friendly Thai service and fresh crisp healthy food, Ghin kopi offers a great place to dine and not feel guilty afterwards This said, their menu is lacking. Where's the purple tofu and coconut cream desert? . . .

Poor everything. So we went here hoping for a nice casual dinner for Valentine's Day - nothing too flash.

They got a lot of things wrong:
1) No greeting on arrival just, "Eat in or take away?" - I'd expect this from cheaper, more 'authentic' places.
2) We made a simple request to have 2 curry puffs and 2 samosas instead of 4 of one type (same price) and were told that because they're pre-packed, mixing is not possible (?!?!). We went the curry puffs and they were tiny.
3) The waitress forgot to give us water we had ordered.
4) Our mains were just plopped onto one end of our table with no words, no mention of what they were.
5) When we realised we were given the beef salad instead of beef satay and raised it with one of the girls, she went to the other girl to come back and reconfirm our order. Like seriously, why would we lie ?
6) Beef satay took forever.
7) We were given one serve of rice instead of the two that we ordered and again had to correct them.
8) They didn't give us our more than $5 worth of change. When we asked for it, they acted surprised and gave it to us in small coinage from the tips bowl.

The whole time, there was a table across from us uncleaned.

Food: 3/5
Service: 0/5
Atmosphere: 1/5
