Review Amigos Mexican Restaurant - Wollongong

Shawn Sequeira
Great little Mexican restaurant in the heart of Wollongong. The ambience, decor and service are crisp, contemporary and courteous and their cocktails and meals are delicious. Be warned - their portion sizes are very generous, so order accordingly to avoid food waste. I will be a happy return customer!

At first glance things seem expensive but the serving sizes are HUGE. I had to take half of it home. The frozen strawberry margarita was nice too. Nice place for a casual night out with friends or a partner.

Wings, nachos and jalepino bites were really good. The casa tacos were ok. Customer service was really good. Food came out quickly.

Came in for wings Wednesday. Although they are no longer 50c, they've drastically improved in quality and crispness. Sauces are extra which is a bit of a joke. My wife had the Nachos which were also great. Downsides was how long it took for a waiter to take our orders and bring our drinks. Had to ask for cutlery and napkins which was hard because we had to find a waiter. Little to no atmosphere created due to the lack of music playing in the background.

The servings are large, the drinks were well priced and the nachos was great. However they the waiter said they couldnt serve starters and mains seperatley, it all had to come out together, it was about an hour wait for any food and one fried dish came out frozen on the inside. Then they said they would replace it, but it never showed up.

One of the best meals we've ever had. The service was amazing - 2 meals out in 10 minutes on a busy Saturday night and they were polite about our messy 1 year old. The food was delicious - the best wings (closest to Buffalo Wild Wings we've had in Australia), and Chorizo Tacos (the coriander and lime were mouth watering). And amazing atmosphere, like one of those little-known back ally gems that blows your mind. We'd go back in a heartbeat.

Amigos has been an institution in Wollongong for as long as I can remember. Situated on the fast evolving foodie golden mile on Wollongong’s Kiera Street the sprawling Mexican style restaurant is popular with the younger demographic. Offering specials on Taco Tuesdays and Wing Wednesday’s these nights usually attract a bigger crowd so expect to find uni students and teenage birthday groups dominating the crowd. The ambiance of the venue is pleasant. There is a the usual cantina paraphernalia smattered throughout but it’s the layout that is slightly unusual. The dining areas wind through several rooms and then out to a rear alfresco area. The layout is not unpleasant and actually adds a feeling of privacy and seclusion. Staff are friendly and somewhat attentive. Made up of younger staff who are probably learning the ropes in their first hospitality jobs they do their best to make your night enjoyable. There is an extensive drinks menu but for some reason the bar was not able to put together a Bloody Mary which I found slightly odd but the alternative Pimm’s Punch (El Presidente) was shared and enjoyed between three us us while others in our group downed frozen margaritas. The food here is not authentic Mexican but that doesn’t mean it isn’t enjoyable. Like most off shore Mexican the proteins all tend to taste kind of samey and the difference in the meals just comes down to what it is served in. One small observation from my meal was the flour tortilla basket which had been deep fried to achieve its shape tasted like the oil was overdue for a change. Not a deal breaker but I’m guessing the result of a faster food style operation in the kitchen. One thing with Amigos is that the meal servings are huge! No one at our table was able to conquer their meals (kids included) and we left with three take away containers for tomorrow’s lunch! The service is also very fast. We received all our meals about 10min after ordering. It actually felt faster, which is great for large groups. In saying that we didn’t feel like we were being hurried through our sitting and had ample time to enjoy our meals. Overall Amigos is great for groups and you will not leave hungry! 🌮
