Review Unique Thai - Woodvale

Sarah Hughes
I’ve dined here a handful of times, usually delicious food, especially for a GF option. Unfortunately this evening, I ordered 2 Chicken Pad Thai’s (GF) and received one with several prawns in it. Luckily, we do not have a seafood allergy but for anyone who does, please make sure they’re aware! This made me wonder what their cleaning practices are between cooking different meals and if there’s any care in controlling cross-contamination.

50 dollars for - 1 rice with frozen vege and no meats, 1 green curry with no vegies (only onions and a few slice of capsicum with only a quarter of the container actually filled ) and spring rolls. Service was not very friendly, this place makes me feel like they are trying to make maximum price with cheapest ingredients possible supplied in the food. The rent prices cant be used as an excuse as its a small shops in woodvale. for context, karrinyup ( a premium suburb and locality, beach side has asian food cafes within the shopping mall, that sell much better quality and tasting food at just a quarter of the price. First time i have ever had a fried rice anywhere with just frozen peas, carrots and a couple of stalks from a kailan vegetable that costs 99 cents at asian food grocers and would be made to fit at least 100 fried rices ( based on the quantity in each box). This place was a little too over the top with the stingyness, service was also terrible (no smile, no thank you, just "yes thats 50 dollars and bye") won't be back.

I've dined here several times. The service is always outstanding with very friendly and caring staff. The food is really good and there's a large variety of dishes. The stuffed chicken wings are excellent for starters, and the "crying tiger beef" is super; a nice chilli hit with loads of fresh coriander. The fish is good quality. I'm going back soon because there's other dishes I'd like to try. Fresh and delicious; Unique Thai is great!

Ordered some take away and after 10min of eating it the wife and I where fighting over who is gonna use the loo first. I never had food go through my belly that quick. I gave them a call and they don't care. Worst service ever! The red curry was very average, the the chill basil chicken was yummy except that they gave us the runs badly. It's over priced too.

Perfection and consistency are hard to find but I'm lucky to live near this place. Congratulations Larry your hard work and dedication are a tribute to your restaurant. I'd give you seven stars if I could. 🤩

Super friendly staff! Made you feel at home. Larry is the BO$$ - he came to our table and was awesome! We got the Entre sampler - all fried but still tasty! I had never had fish cakes before and they were really good! chu che fish curry - amazing, tender and flavourful And the pad Thai! So yum!! I’m allergic to prawns so they altered everything. Which makes me believe it’s all made fresh! Bottle shop right next door so it’s BYO. They stored our beer in the fridge and they gave us a stubbyholder . Also brought us seconds when we finished. Great all around :) very happy with this new local spot we’ve found (new for us) UPDATE: visited for the second time today and he did it again! The pangang fish curry and the jungle beef with coconut rice - AMAZING!

By far the best Thai food in Perth! This is the only restaurant that I could never get bored of. I have never had a bad experience at Unique Thai and the food constantly maintains a high standard. Dishes I Recommend: Beef Salad (ask for extra spicy) Tamarind Fish Red Curry (Duck is their speciality) Pork Larb Coriander Chicken Pad Thai To top it off, the customer service is outstanding. The owner, Larry, always makes a point to come and greet all his customers. All the other staff are efficient and serve customers with a smile.

Great food and great service
Service was attentive and the waiter dealing with us engaged the children regarding their dinner selection. Great service and recommendations. Food was fresh, nicely presented and tasty. Will be making this a regular.

This place is a gem. Went here tonight food was amazing and Larry would be the nicest owner every he walked us out and had a chat with us. The food is amazing I highly suggest

Definitely the better Thai place around these suburbs. We go here often. Can’t go wrong getting food from here and inside is always packed. Thumbs up.

Best Thai food and great staff. Thanks Larry for the friendly greetings. The service is efficient and the ice bucket with ice for my wine was there as soon as we sat. The entree selection we had was so delicious. Curry puffs, satay and Spring rolls. The Pad Thai was one of the best ever. Very happy to return.

Back again and the food is still great and Larry is a lovely host.
Had the curry puffs for entree and always delicious.
Red duck curry for main and delicious. Just right amount of spice and sweetness . It’s a winner.

Excellent food and service. We have been here many times and have tried a range of dishes. Everything has been fabulous. Service is always top notch

So very disappointed. We have never eaten from this place but decided to try based on reviews and being close and having some hungry guests. Ordered four dishes Basil beef - hardly any basil , beef was tough and very bland . Green and Red curries extremely milky and watery hardly any veggies a couple that were in looked very unhealthy. Red curry smelled very bad and was almost white in colour. Cashew chicken was ok , bit more flavour but very basic. We love eating out and we have eaten at a lot of places around Perth , tonight’s take away was by far the worst we’ve had. Staff looked really flustered , maybe we just got unlucky and they were having a bad night. Sorry but we won’t go back.

👍🏻 Food was almost as good as the A1 service. Will certainly be back, family friendly and a busy place on a Saturday night.
🍷BYO is allowed, liquor shop conveniently located next door.
🍲 We ordered moneybags, satay sticks and honey king prawns to share for entree, and Crying Tiger, Peanut lamb and coconut rice for the mains to share. The little one got a plate of chips and nuggets that lasted the night (huge portion). Food was quick to come out, and was hot, cooked perfectly. Generous portions and not disappointing re: sauce/meat/veggie ratio. Two choices for kids menu but chips + nuggets/fish.
💵 Price was good. About $35 per adult.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Unique Thai could do with a little update of its interior. Loved the Thai decorations, but please get rid of the sticky, lumpy plastic table cloths, remove *some* of the dust collectors (that have nothing to do with Thai tradition). Was also relieved the “special sauce” was in a pot on the side of my plate or my crying tiger would have been inedible.

Phenomenal curry puffs - packed with delicious curry paste and tasty vegetables. Atmosphere is great, and the food is undoubtedly unique, thai food. Such a wide variety of spicy, authentic dishes, my favourites include green curry chicken, thai basil beef, tom yum seafood, money bags and the tamarind fish. Very friendly owner, Larry, will effortlessly learn your name after one visit, and creates a personal dining experience. Lots of loyal, regular customers, including me and definately worth trying.

Disgusting service last night. We arrived at 8.40pm, they don't close til 10pm. They said we could come in if we ordered immediately. Quite rude but we decided to stay as we were hungry and happy to order right away. They mixed up two of our main dishes and started vacuming the floors while we were eating. I tried to get someone's attention but 4 out of the 5 staff members working were on their phones. I glared at the guy vacuming and he got the message and stopped. Food is ok but won't be spending another cent there if this is how they treat their curomers.
Explains why they were empty on a Saturday night. Zero stars.

Very nice!! Lovely service, and delicious food, with lots of meat and fresh vegetables. Super quick service too! Definitely recommended and will be back again!

Unfortunately very disappointing. The spring rolls and stuffed chicken wings for entree were great, the mains were not. The Massaman Beef is a fave and this one was awful - cold, no peanuts, watery and flavour was wrong. The Honey Chicken - barely any chicken but heaps of batter. So disappointed to have taken my friends there.

Living North of the River in Perth utterly restricts you in finding a decent restaurant to enjoy good food.

So many places try to be something they are not and are often overpriced slop, not even close to the cuisine that they are advertising.

Well, in this case, I eat my words. Unique Thai is no fine dining let me tell you that, but trust me when I say their Thai food is by far some of the best I have eaten. Now. If you are expecting a beautifully presented restaurant, welcomed by well-presented staff then i recommend that you skip this place BUT if you're a, bring your own, rock out in whatever the hell you are wearing at the time type of person and you just want a good feed, then this place is definitely for you.

This is a no frills, simple and faded decor restaurant and honestly, there is a "bit" of a wait for food but honestly worth it. SOME of the starters are slightly overpriced (peanut shrimp being one of them) however some are well worth the dollar, as are the main courses.

So if you are stuck on where to go and just want good food, then Unique Thai is definately the place!

My choice off the menu - Jungle Curry Pork and coconut rice. Enjoy!

Wanted to try this place for the first time on a Wednesday evening 6.15pm. I rang to place an order and the phone rang out 3 times with no answer......seeeeya.

One of the best places we ate while in Perth. We actually came back twice. Red Curry Pork was very succulent. Highly recommended a great place to eat.

I've not had much Thai but this place always hits the spot! Lovely curries and their Pad Thai is awesome, friendly service all the time and ive only ever had take away from there. Worth travelling for, shame they aren't open on Mondays 🙁

Hands down the best Thai in Perth. We're big fans of Thai food and often eat at different Thai restaraunt a in Perth but the food and service here is second to none!

Seriously great Thai food. Very fresh, nice strong flavours, good atmosphere, really enjoyed this and will be back very soon to work through the menu.
Sarah Kwok
Nice and busy restaurant with an average Thai food. We ordered Tom Yum Soup, Masaman Curry and Pad Thai. We didn't get the spiciness and the heat from those food. Great service by the way.

Go to Larrys at least once every two months since it opened. Never had a bad meal. On the contrary, we are blessed with the best thai restaurant in the metro area. Friendly owner and staff. 10/10

Awesome dinner with some family. You need to try this place if you're in the area, you won't regret it.
Great food and great service at superb pricing.
Twoviews
This was our third time at UT and haven't had any reason to complain. Very good Thai food from an extensive menu, friendly staff with good advice, crowded but not noisy. Will go there again definitely but intersperse the visits so it doesn't become "too much of a good thing". Unlike other places, there was no rushing us off the table to get others in. Our friends are in complete agreement.

Fantastic Thai Food! Yum Yum Yum! Larry & Goong makes you feel like you have been invited to their home for dinner! Definitely coming back next time im in Perth.
Tttt
Great tasting Thai food. I haven't been to Thailand but I'd say it's pretty authentic. Worth the price.

This has to be the best restaurant in Perth. The food as always is outstanding. Rich in flavours, and very tasty. They have a large variety to choose from, you really can't make a wrong decision. Larry the owner is always welcoming and friendly. I will support his business till the end of time! Thank you for such a top class Thai restaurant. We eat here weekly! David and Helena Williams

Rockin' Thai. Best Thai in Perth. My partner and I have been coming to this beautiful unique restaurant for years. Excellent customer service and a meal that never lacks in flavor. Highly recommended. A place that will never disappoint your tastes. Please give it a go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Always count on it :)

The fish curry was nice but we were recommended the masaman however I think the potatoes in it were off. They were a strange consistency, tasted bad and had green bits in them.

Awesome Thai. Larry the owner/chef is a fantastic guy, really friendly and a great cook. Had a great tom yum soup, my only negative is that the soup should be twice the size at it is soooooo great. Larb beef was fantastic aswell as the yellow prawn curry. A really fantastic dinner thanks Larry.

Best Thai!. Nothing compare to Unique Thai. The food is delicious and varied, the service is excellent and every meal there is a great experience. Even if I did not live locally, I would still make the drive to dine here. The owner Larry is also a really great guy and makes everyone feel welcome.
Katy
Ordered take aways for 6 adults. Honey chicken and beef massaman curry were nice. Disappointing for the rest. Sadly it seems you have to drive to NorthBridge for good Thai :(
Sarah
Best Thai food ever! Most delicious vege spring rolls and Thai fried rice and the 3 flavour chicken is amazing. My favourite family dinner
Daveman
Great Local. Turning out to be one of our regular Friday night treats. Good, honest food, well priced with good service. Gets busy, and is not the most romantic of settings, but for local Thai, its great.
Carina
Service with a smile. Hats off to Larry and his family. From the moment you walk in its easy to see this is a family run business. Larry is much loved by the locals and I can see why, The food is amazing!! Have now found my new Thai restaurant.
Thank you for a wonderful evening and a great birthday dinner.
Tony
Was my first and definitely not my last . Excellent food great value for money . They need a bigger placeb
Janry
Gone downhill. Quality of meat not what we were used to

dishes lack the flavour they used to also
Janice Teo
Excellent food, delicious flavours, great ambience

Very hit and miss place. Dissapointing take away. Rice was gluggy and red curry tasted like someone accidentally added a kilo of chilli to it. The massaman was revolting, the meat tasted old and reheated and was extremely tough. Definitely not melt in your mouth. Will NOT be going back.
Darren Ball
First Timers. I suggest people book before going here. It was pretty busy. The service was fantastic, the food was a generous size, it had wonderful flavours and it was fantastic. We had Ginger Chicken and Cashew Lamb for mains and Bamboo Chicken for entrée.
Highly recommend. We have now found our NOR Thai Restaurant.
Larry (I think he is the owner) came up and asked if everything was ok during our meal and at the end thanked us for coming. Lovely gesture.

Great food!! Very authentic, generous portions and reasonably priced for Perth. It was our first visit and we will definitely be going back. Highly recommend the red curry duck!
Karen Gray
Great food. Def one of our fav places to feed!!! the staff are great, very friendly and the food is delish, helps as we are in walking distance and there is a bottle shop next door :))
My Review
Loved it!. The food was delicious and fresh, very reasonably priced (a rarity in Perth!), fast and good service. We were very impressed. Will definitely be back and would recommend to anyone. You won't be disappointed.

Great thai food. This is a great little thai restaurant but we sometimes find the service a bit hit and miss and have realised that its only a bit miss when they are too busy. Our best nights have been weeknights, so now we deliberately avoid Fri, Sat nights. Unfortunately, now that its got so popular, the prices have also increased and we feel its not quite as good value as it used to be. Still, one of the criteria's we make for a good thai restaurant is their ability to make the food "thai hot, not aussie hot' and they can certainly do that, so it still gets a high rating from us.
Cocopop
One of my favourite places to eat! Visit this resteraunt regularly and although the prices are a little higher than other Thai places, I can not fault the food or the service. Can never pass up the mixed entree or the snow pea duck. Chilli jam prawns yummy too. Definitely worth a visit!
CheeKy MonKey
Great food, great service. Thai food with added extra Asian cuisine, so not entirely all Thai food. Food is value for money. Above average.
Trend
It's unique but its not thai.
Ben
Definitely worth the journey. We used to live in Woodvale and ate here once a fortnight. Since moving closer to the CBD one of the things we miss is Unique. Once you have eaten here all other Thai places just don't stack up. We now just make the 20 minute drive knowing we won't be disappointed.
Shreejay Dass
Excellent Thai food! One of my favourites in Perth! The chef/owner Larry always makes it a point to to find out how the meal was each and every time and quite often throws in a free dish for the table! Always busy and buzzing so booking a must! Salt and pepper squid deliciously different!
Juice Biggalo
Got in at 6.30pm, service was fantastic, food was great, and by 7.30pm, the atmosphere was buzzing. Will back
Davalia
First time visit and we will certainly be back!!! loved the food, the staff were friendly and attentive
Lauren
They let 3 of us have the banquet even though it's usually for min. of 4. For $25 we got some entrees, endless rice and 5 dishes. My favs were the massaman beef and green curry. We had a lot leftover that they offered to pack for takeaway.nice staff, lots of people coming in for takeaway orders and the chef came out at the end of the night to say hello. I will be back.

Thai food that Aussies love... I've always been told that a sure sign of an authentic Asian restaurant is to see the number of Asians inside. On this count, Unique Thai does not fare so good.

But this could be more because of its location in Woodvale than anything else. The four of us ordered:

Paneang Beef Curry - 7.5/10 Lovely peanut curry which was clearly the favourite for the evening.

Garlic pork - 6/10 I was expected the deep fried version but it was saucy garnished with lots of veggies. Still, it was enjoyable but I haven't seen this dish in Thailand before.

Spicy Coriander prawn - 7/10 It was nice and tasty. However, similar in taste to the garlic pork dish, sweetish more than spicy.

Green curry vegetables - 6/10 A very mild type of curry, more coconut than curry IMO. Actually with all the veggies that went with garnishing the 3 dishes, this was not necessary.

So all in, the food was really Thai Aussie with the emphasis on the latter. Service was above average and our waitress was nice and cheerful. However, there was another grumpy looking one that thankfully, didnt serve us.

Ambience is also very nice and cosy with many nice touches of Thai artefacts. Obviously the lady owner has got the right taste for its intended audience and that explains the hordes that descended in.

Certainly worth a try, but don't expect Thai Thai type of food. To be fair, that can also be said of many other Asian restaurants here too.

Great Thai place, best in the area, My mouth waters when I think about the Larb Beef. Very friendly staff.

Fantastic restaurant. Has the most extensive menu I 've seen in a Thai restaurant. We are regulars and usually the last to leave. For entre the stuffed chicken wings are to die for. For mains the chilli coriander duck is superb. The honey king prawns are also fantastic. It's hard to pick a dish we don't like. Once Larry has met you, he will never forget your name. The staff are always helpful and friendly. This is definitely our restaurant of choice'
Lom
Good wholesome honest Thai food!. I visit Unique thai very regularly and have had a wide variety of dishes from the extensive menu. The chilli coriander chicken has to be the best amongt the ones i have tasted and the deep fried prawns are divine. My wife is a vegetarian and Larry, the owner, takes special pride in making special off-the-menu dishes for her. He also grows a selection of the fresh ingrediants himself! There is always a buzz about the place and the service is what you would expect from good upmarket eateries. We are always greeted with a smile. Prices are very reasonable and no matter what you pick from the menu, you will no doubt come back for more.....can't wait for our next visit this weekend!
Kate
Lovely. I think this is or was called Unique Thai (?). I could be wrong here. But it is the Thai restaurant next to the bottle shop at Woodvale Shops anyway. It is the best Thai food I've ever eaten. Very well priced and Larry the owner is delightful. Have eaten here many times and also had take away.
Urban Farmer
Authentic Thai. I have been to this restauraunt a number of times. The food is authentic flavours as you get in Thailand. Pork larb is so flavoursome with lemon grass and red onion. Phanag curry is creamy and moreish. Thai spring rolls very large and tasty. Larry the head chef makes an effort each night to leave the kitchen and talk to each table individually. The waitresses dress in traditional thai and smile like those in Thailand. BYO and there is a bottle-o next door. Fantastic hidden place doing amazing authentic things with Thai Food.
