Some of the best Indian in south yarra. I order from yarra indian all the time (vegetarian dishes) and I seriously recommend it to all my friend. Occasionally the wait time get long when it’s busy, but the food is always so delicious
Delicious authentic Indian food and a cozy corner along Toorak road! My bf and I stumbled across this gem at 10pm on a Saturday night and we were thankful it was opened! We ordered the chicken tikka, lamb Briyani and mango lassi! Must visit if you haven’t
The food here is amazing!!
I love the guys there, lovely people. I go alone or with friends such a chilled atmosphere.
I recommend trying some curried that are out of your usual order list, they know how to suggest according to your test.
It’s not a fancy please but it is a lovely place.
Best Indian restaurant. staff was very kind.
You should try butter chicken with curry.
We wished they had more deserts menu.
Will visit with my boys next time.
Fantastic family-owned+operated restaurant. Their $10 lunch with curry+naan+coke is unbelievably cheap and amazingly delicious. If you are not one of those snobs who get pleased by the pretentious ambience but insufficient & average food, then you will love this place. Highly recommended.
everything is good about this place, the staff (incredible, polite, smiling, available), the decor (very beautiful and romantic as well), the food (real Indian food of high quality) and the ambiance. One of the very best restaurant we have ever made in India. Do reserve in advance for a window and come around a time when daylight goes down as you will enjoy the view before and after with the lights at night).
DELIVERY
Ordered via Deliveroo.
Delivered on time and piping hot.
QUALITY
Ordered both a chicken and lamb curry, with a single large rice, some Naan bread and a poppadom pack. The chicken was chunky sliced breast meat, and the lamb was cubes of lamb meat. Neither of the curries were hot in spice (ordered this way) so I cannot comment on how hot TYI dishes are. I can say the Korma and Madras has a perfect balance of spice, cream and texture. Naan bread was served hot and flavoursome, as were the poppadoms.
VALUE
The large rice (+$1) was ample for 2 curries. Compared to expensive alternatives in the area, The Yarra Indian delivered a great meal at a reasonable price.
Afforable and reasonable price and good taste, take 15-20 mins to wait during lunch time but still faster than some of restaurants nearby. $8 for choice of curry and rice or $10 plus a drink so overall, it is satisfying experience.
We've only ever ordered takeaway off Menulog but we love the curries. It's our go to for Indian takeaway, favorite dish is the lamb korma, we order it every time. Also love the samosas.
I love this place - quick, cheap and really delicious. Well worth a try if you are in the neighborhood. Their chicken tikka rolls make a great quick lunch, their lunch / dinner packs are good value at about $10.
Best Indian in South Yarra!!
We've tried multiple dishes at this place and we have never been disappointed. This may sound obscure but if you're a fan of a game of chess it's definitely worth a visit as well. Whether it is dine in or delivery this place is a must try for everyone!!!
This Indian food won't blow your mind but it has an excellent value lunch deal and it does the job for take-away creamy, buttery curries that will leave you feeling content (and a bit bloated). I wouldn't eat in (the actual restaurant is tiny and there's no way to have a private conversation) but otherwise it's pretty good.
Great Indian food. Full of flavour and decent portion sizes. Bit on the spicy side- even their mild curries. Luckily that suits! Their nanbread is fluffy and a lovely texture. The vegetarian curries are my favourite. Great little local place for takeaway that is quick, affordable and tasty. Haven't dined in but it looks cozy and welcoming!
We've ordered from The Yarra Indian via Menulog in the past, but wanted to experience the 'dine-in' experience for a change. The restaurant itself is super tiny. We were the only people there, so when the kitchen went quiet it was admittedly a tad awkward! The girl who served us was friendly enough. The food was quite nice, but the presentation very average. Probably more of a 'take-away' venue than 'eat-in' - will return to ordering over Menulog I think!
Have been a couple of times for takeaway and no way to argue that it is not value for money.
Went on a Saturday night and had to wait a little for my takeaway order which was not a problem and they gave me a complimentary dessert as an apology.
Ordered amongst other things the Beef Masala, the curry sauce was excellent but the beef itself was virtually inedible as it was just so tough not what you would expect in a curry. Guess I should not order a beef dish from an Indian restaurant.
Had it tonight when I was hungover.
Absolute heaven. Lamb rogan josh was the highlight. My mate @nailz.t (Instagram) went the chicken korma and licked the bowl clean.
Have been having the chicken biriyani at least once a week ever since I moved to Melbourne. It's my kind of comfort food, a reminder of Mama Geek's cooking, not that she cooks good biriyani, but you know Indian food.. 🍛❤️ don't forget to mix raita while eating the biriyani, best combi 👯
Just all round nice simple Indian food for a fair price. I moved to the South Yarra area a couple months ago and have eaten here 5+ times already
Liked the food taste at this place. Tried dinner pack and veg biriyani. Staff is courteous and helpful. The hotel is very small with just 4 tables in it. But if you need to try Indian food @ reasonable rates this is best bargain you'll get in South Yarra.
2nd time here
Walked into their closing time, yet was welcomed and fed well
Reasonable price and food was upto standard.
Was made fresh and plentiful
Service was good and will definitely recommend
Its not a flash looking place but beats those by the consistent quality of food and worth for your buck.
Don't know how we missed to spot this place, which is on our way to our regular Dainty Sichuan lunches. Their lunch deals are the best value Indian you'll get anywhere in Melbourne (let alone South Yarra); Two naans + one main curry + can of cola for only $10. It's a small place with four tables but the quality of food is very home-made and the couple who run this joint are extremely friendly. We had Palak Paneer + Chicken Tikka Masala + Lamb Rogan Josh + Beef Vindaloo and they all were fantastic. As their dishes are made-to-order, they took around 15 minutes to arrive; next time we'll order in advance and they'll be nice and ready by the time we walk down there from Richmond. Highly recommended.
very good and diffrent lunch menu in the area 😄
one of the best food in very reliable price
Found a diffrent taste
I tried chicken tikka salad and belive me thats amazing
Really delicious! My son and I had lunch here today for the first time, but we will certainly be going back. We had the Butter Lamb and Vegetable Korma, both of which were really tasty. They have a special of 2 main courses, a huge amount of naan bread and 2 drinks for $15!!
Friendly owners, simple, casual decor, yummy food.
Great food, I ordered the beef Kashmiri, Daal Makhani and the Sabzi Chicken. I enjoyed the meals and found the chicken dish to be extremely tender. I got the vegetarian daal it was great but a tad bland. Fast delivery would recommend great value and food.
My experience at The Yarra Indian was sublime. The food was all fantastic and made as in-home style. You could tell it was prepared carefully and with love. The service is also excellent. I just wish I lived closer! I had the Fish curry wish was so delicious, every herb and spice was delectable as they danced of the perfectly cooked fish.
Delicious to the last bite. Everything we had. The Lassi was the best I've ever tried.
Don't make a mistake and not eat here. Choose The Yarra Indian and you won't be dissapointed, you'll be delighted!
I went to the Yarra Indian and had a great time! Food & service were very good. I will definitely come back! Best Indian, in my eyes, this part of town
Amazing food at reasonable price!
We've been there for about two months and tried different dishes, I can tell we haven't been disappointed. Food is delicious, friendly staff, good ambiance and of course, the Bollywood movies ;) It's been recently renovated and menu expanded. One of our favorites dishes is the Yarra chicken, the garlic bread is fantastic too. Highly recommended
I 💜 Yarra Indian! I am here at least once a week for dinner take away. The place is cozy and casual and the staff is friendly and unpretentious and I enjoy watching Bollywood on the telly while waiting for my order. Recently renovated with new stoves, refrigerator, tables and chairs. And the food? Always delicious!
Great Food , Low price ,Good Service and Satisfactory ambiance.
Talking about the food, I love to have dinners at this place time n again . Very tasty food that leaves you with the feeling to come back again.Has been recently renovated to change the ambiance which seems to be better than before. It's a small but nice and tidy place where you can take your family every now and then to have good Indian food. The service was good as expected and they usually serve the food food within 15 minutes after ordering. The price is on the lower side for really good food compared to some other indian or other restaurants .
Epic meal, with really friendly staff who make you feel at home.
It's intimate and affordable, well worth popping in for a meal.
Plus some killer Bollywood films being screened.

+3.5
This review is from a while back, when I went to watch While We're Young at the Moonlight Cinemas with a friend and had a takeaway curry picnic. It was delish!
Left: Plain Naan - $2 Firstly the price is so cheap, and the size quite large. All in all was a great naan. Right: Paneer Naan - $3.50 I just love my cheese naans and this one tasted great, but was quite oily, which is what I guess you expect.
Left: Chicken Vindaloo We asked for medium heat and they got it just right. Enough spice to make you feel warm inside and sensitise your taste buds a bit, but doesn't destroy your taste buds. The downfall is they put way more sauce than meat, which I realised is quite common in Melbourne. Otherwise flavour was great, chicken was cooked well and I would definitely recommend.
Top notch. Have been looking for a good indian around the general area for ages. Tried all in the area none of them are anygood in my opinion.
Tried yarra tonight, got the dinner special with tikka masala. Not only is it only $10, but it is top notch curry, i was blown away. This is proper indian curry cooked well for a bargin price, dont let the modest venue decive you.
Best Indian in Melbourne. This joint has been my favourite for years now! Best food and great prices - The owner is also the friendliest guy on the block.
Ignore the (infrequent) poor reviews. I'm only writing this review because I was dismayed to come across some adverse reviews, including one from someone in NSW. I may have originated in NSW, but I've lived around the corner from our Indian cobber for donkey's years, and had more dinner deliveries from him than I've had hot breakfasts. My wife and I think he's a top character, and have never had anything but excellent food from him. Forget the critics — that's bulldust.
Best Indian we've had and we've had a lot of Indian. A gem of South Yarra. 10 out of 10.
Quick curry on the way home, very tatsty and definitely a genuine Indian curry!
Best curry in Melbourne! I have tried more curry houses than there are people in India and this serves the best, most authentic curries in Melbourne. Not a fine dining experience by any stretch, but ask for 'hot' and that's what you'll get. Flavours are amazing and meat tender. Naan and rice a perfect accompaniment. If you know of a better curry establishment please let me know (but I shan't hold my breath)!
GREAT INDIAN. This is very good Indian food!! Amazing naan and curries and excellent service. Not the most fanciest of interiors but takeaway is very good and so cheap! no curry over $14 :)
A must try
Hole-in-the-wall place with yum food, generous portions, cheap prices and friendly staff. We went early (6.30) and ordered takeaway. Food was ready in a jiffy. Only strange thing was the alarmingly orange colour of the garlic naan- not sure what was with that.
Recently moved to the area and got a couple of takeaways from here. $15 for decent curry and rice. Good curry at a good price. It's basic but good honest curry. Going here again tomorrow night with friends.
THE BOSS IS THE BEST!! Great value tasty food. I have been going to "The Boss" for over 8 years now and after dining in last night for the first time in years he and I had a really good chat about life and it inspired me to write this review. Although I have been eating there for years this review is free from bias and I am very aware of the South Yarra Takeaway environment and have eaten almost every where.
The reason I keep coming back to this place is the tasty food and its value for money. I cant think of any takeaway that will leave you absolutely bursting full for $10. The dinner pack with Meat, Rice, Naan and Poppadum is great value and I often just share one of these with my girlfriend and its sufficient for a meal. This place craps on Shiva in Hawksburn village and is half the price.
Yes the sauce is runny (not watery at all like some reviewers seem to think) but I like it that way.
My absolute favorite is Butter Chicken and I always ask for vegetables or spinach with it which he does for free for everyone.
My next favorite is chicken Korma, actually now i think it ties with the butter chicken.
Chicken Tikka is also great but a bit spicier so if you don't like kick then maybe go Korma. Beef Madras is another fav but is also spicy.
If you don't like spice then tell the boss when ordering and he will do his best to keep it mild or if you like it hot he can beef it up.
The decor inside is not the greatest I do admit but I think that ads to the charm of this place. The boss has been in this location for 19 years (passing all food regulations) and has seen many other restaurants in the area come and go and he is still there so he must be doing something right.
Eating in is by far the best way and the naan just melts in your mouth.
Delivery depending on how busy he is can take from 30 minutes up to an hour maybe more but remember he is running the whole show in the kitchen and working the tables in the restaurant all at once. He is an absolute work horse who has worked 6 days a week for 19 years and has never missed a beat.
He can sometimes be inconsistent with curries but even the worst ones are still good and you can't beat that $10 dinner deal (hasn't gone up in my 8 years), the only thing he does do now is charge for delivery which is a pittance anyway.
I am moving to the UK in a few weeks and am going to miss the boss and his friendly manor and great food.
The best!. I have been coming to this restaurant for over 9 years now and I honestly think it is the best Indian I have ever had in Melbourne ever, hands down. Everything is super well priced especially if you order yourself a dinner pack (I always pay the extra dollar for garlic naan instead of plain).
When you enter the place is screams dodgy, its not the place you would want to sit down and have a meal in but my god the food! It never appears to be busy but I see a lot of Indian folk frequenting which to me is a good sign in my opinion, tells me I am actually getting genuine flavours not some altered western turn on it.
The service is always quick, easy and friendly. I moved an hour out of the city and on more than one occasion I found myself leaving work in the CBD to go to South Yarra and then taking it home to enjoy . 5 thumbs up.
Awesome Boss. Great friendly owners, great food & great value.
Nut friendly as well
Thanks Boss
Boy, it's expensive here in Australia. I am from USA and everything is so expensive in Australia. This tiny joint, take-away, dine-in place has great value and friendly service. To top it off, fantastic lamb vindaloo just as it should be. Don't be fooled by looks and location. Highly recommended for true Indian food lovers. Dinner pack is the way to go.
Tasty and generous. The portions at Yarra Indian are very generous. Service is prompt and food brought out quickly. It's a small shaded place located just off the main road. A nice and quiet spot for work lunch.
One of the best restaurants in the area.Extremely recommended. The staff is so nice and polite and the food is tasty 😋 love to have their tea with delicious Gulabjamun ❤️
I can't believe how amazing the food is here. The best Indian food in Australia! I have been to many Indian restaurants in Australia and this restaurant is THE BEST!!!
If you're in South Yarra or near by... YOU MUST COME!
Thank you so much to the staff who provided me such a beautiful meal. I will remember this forever.
Tried this Indian restaurant tonight for the first time. I have to say the food and service was great. They were very busy but well worth the wait. The butter chicken was delicious and so was the butter masala paneer. I can't wait to go back and try some other authentic dishes.
I have been coming to yarra indian from an year and it has been an amazing experience coming here almost 5-6 times a week for my lunch and sometimes dinner too. There curries are definitely worth trying and that too at a very reasonable price. When it comes to fill myself up the first thing that strikes in my mind is yarra indian restaurant. The best thing now is that they have got dine in space as well . I’ll recommend it to everyone . ..
