Cozy and inviting little place. Food was delicious and arrived promptly, waitress was very friendly and efficient. Very enjoyable experience, will definitely be visiting again soon.
We've been here a few times now and will definitely return. The fried chicken is delicious, tasty gyoza, fresh sushi and very fair pricing. It's actually a real bargain for Japanese food. Cute and cosy atmosphere and warm and friendly staff make it a local winner. Would recommend to anyone looking for tasty local Japanese food.
Absolutely love this place, I always get the chicken katsu don and variation of sushi rolls, I came here last night and I thoroughly enjoyed the food as so did my boyfriend who had 10 gyoza to himself.
Very delightful and great atmosphere
So pretty too
Will definitely be back again
Really cute place with a warming decor. The service is always great and the food is always lovely. Its not the tastiest food but its just really good. Last time we sat around the sushi train but a lack of options was annoying. We just ordered from the menu. Well priced
INCREDIBLE SERVICE AND EVEN BETTER FOOD
I cannot fault this venue, the inside is beautiful, small and intimate, the sushi boats are so fun and add extra character!
Their food is phenomenal
The service is friendly, polite and it feels like you've know them for a long time
Great service and staff are very attentive. Venue is a great space. The tempura inside out is great. Good selection of dishes. Fresh and never dissapoints.
Great space for a quiet, authentic and tasty Japanese meal (especially before a movie at the Sun Theatre) Service was friendly and prompt. Everything we ordered exceeded expectations. Three entrees, three mains and two deserts and we thoroughly enjoyed them all. Would definitely go back.
Wow cute restaurant, gently service and very amazing food...congratulations!
The waitress was very attentive and friendly!
The food delicious!
I'll put it out there - I don't eat sushi but was still tempted in for a nice casual dinner here and ended up going back a few times.
The ladies in here are very sweet and look after you well, I particularly love the Miso Soup and it's good value for money if choosing the set menus. Have had a variety of dishes in the few visits and have never been disappointed. The Sushi boat itself is always busy and would recommend to book in advance!
Imagine a sushi-train, but instead of sushi on a conveyor belt, it's tug boats on water carrying sushi. While most of the boats were empty, it's pretty decent Japanese for Melbourne's inner-west! The highlight was the giant Ebi Tempura (crispy prawn with unagi sauce), the prawn cake on a sugarcane skewer and deep fried sushi roll with salmon, avocado and eel. Worth a visit
Cute little low-key Japanese restaurant. Great food, very fresh and tasty. Loved the sushi & sashimi platter. Restaurant is very tiny though and can't accommodate large groups (4 or more) so keep this in mind when booking.
Customer service was excellent and would definitely return 😊
After a couple of trips to this place I think I have figured out that you need to order lots of little dishes as there aren't a very wide range of 'main' sized menu items. This is fine because all the small items are very yummy. The assorted tempura is especially good value as it is a large serve and has many different types of vegetables all in that irresistible tempura batter. They have Asahi on tap which is great. The sushi from the boats is overpriced so stick to the menu items. Service is pleasant and the huge mural on the wall is lovely to look at.
Loved it so much! The staff members were lovely and they were very accommodating and helpful when I asked for vegan options! I had the orchid rolls and rice paper rolls and they were delicious! I recommend booking the sushi boat if you're going with a large number of people as the place is very small! I went with 10 people and we all fit onto the sushi boat table with a few spaces to spare 😊 will definitely be coming back next time I have a Japanese food craving! 😊
Nice place but boats weren't in use when I was there. Staff are lovely and attentive so cannot be faulted on service. Wouldn't bother with things like the rice paper rolls, as they weren't much better than what you would get at a take-away or shopping centre. Fried rice was delicious and a decent size. Unbelievably generous amount of prawns in the fried rice. Traditional sushi was nice as was the chicken katsu and rice. Good prices but everything on the menu sounded good and was reasonable in price so we ending up spending about $35 each on food, but ended up not being able to finish most dishes.
Tuna sashimi was delightful, as were the tempura prawns and dipping sauce :) worth a go.
Had to try the seats by the sushi river boat just to take in & experience the whole theme of the restaurant which was quite small the space featured a large mural on the side wall which gave it a nice feel. The prawn & salmon rolls were smooth & melted in my mouth & tasted so good. We worked out the pricing for plates taken from river boat corresponds to the color of writing on the plate. Overall great experience just the small size of the restaurant was the only negative.
What's there not to like about this place? Great atmosphere and great fresh food every time.. Right in the heart of beautiful Yarraville.. Tony the chef is the best.. Great place.. Has my vote..
Favourite place to eat.. best staff, plenty of vegan options. can't fault.
Amazing Japanese! Definitely the best we've had in the area, lovely service and prompt delivery of food even when very busy!
It was very busy and the staff were very nice. I took my 2yo son and they were very accomodating.
Love this place. This is a great little restaurant with lovely staff and good food. I just love everything about it, from the decor to the sushi boats floating around. Highly recommend it.
Best sushi in Melbourne, from the boats to the soft shell crab, was incredibly tasty food, well priced! Very much enjoyed and can't wait to go back and get my sushi fix again. Highly recommended if you love fresh sushi
Very nice. Great food, excellent atmosphere.
Recommend the Bento Box!
Yum, yum in my tum tum! 9 out of 10!
Love this place :)
Very friendly and lovely staff, the sushi is the best I've ever had and the banana fritter is delicious. The sushi boat is a little overpriced but it's the experience that you're paying for there. You can have a well priced meal there if you order off the menu. Nice cosy atmosphere. Would go there again!
Cute, good value and good food. Kawa-Sake is cosy, bright and very pleasant. Food in itself was good - not great - but very good and reasonably priced. Three of us had more than we could eat and it cost about $30 a head including drinks. Will be back.
Absolutely great food and sake. Very tasty and cosy atmosphere
Outstanding!!! Great addition to Yarraville town. The place is warm and cosy, the food is great and the service polite and professional. I would recommend Kawa-Sake anytime.
Quiet & intimate. Food is always amazing here! Staff so friendly! I have loved everything I've ever ordered even if I had never tried it before.. Was just two of us and most of the time the food comes out separately a little annoying but not a big deal. I see other patrons get annoyed if they're with friends. Even though the restaurant was busy still feels very intimate. Overall highly recommended!
Highly recommend the bento, karaage chicken, ebi tempura, tatoyaki!
A great addition to Yarraville. We thought that we'd give this place a go last night, I have to say it was not disappointing, the service was very good, decor & ambiance was excellent & most importantly the food was very very good. The sushimi was thick & of the finest quality, the tempura prawn was outstanding as was the agedashi tofu, the gyoza was also very tasty. Kawa Sake is well worth a try, lots of exquisite things on the menu. Serve sizes are a little on the small size & the price is a little on the high side, its definitely NOT a cheap eats restaurant, though neither of these things should take away from the core of the experience which is about the food, & the food is very good.
Excellent. A great variety of dishes. The seared tuna, sashimi and okonomiyaki were standouts.
Favourite Place. I have been to Kawa-sake several times with both family and friends and we have throughly enjoyed ourselves each time. Lots of our friends and neighbours also go independently and never heard a bad report.
Mochi Jungle's so called review was unjust and overly picky. He even contradictied himself when he first stated that the sashimi was fresh and tasty, then went on to criticise it, saying you could have got better from a take a way ! And anyone knows that a sushi and sahimi platter is seasonal and will vary depending on what fresh fish is available.
Please dont pay any attention to reviews like this and try it for youself. You wont be dissapointed.
Went with a group of 9 friends and sat at the sushi boat table. Was a lot of fun. Good menu options, good prices and fantastic service. Staff very friendly and the birthday boy was given a free beer. Definately going back soon.
Fun Fun Fun. What a great idea! I have been twice (just to sit up at the boat, haven't tried the menu items) and it is a blast! Cold beer, lovely fresh sushi bobbing about on wooden boats. Decor is cute and fun. To all the haters out there I say: lighten up, peeps.
Yay! Have been looking for a good local Japanese restaurant to call our own. We loved this place, nothing too fancy just delicious food. My partner said the sashimi was fresh and delicious and there were plenty of yummy vegetarian options for me! The orchid rolls were soooo good. Love the little boats instead of a train with plates. Will definitely be coming back and recommend it to others.
Do Not Agree with Some of the Review. I have been reading the review many times as I was tempted to make a booking to come to this place. Finally I made a booking for Yesterday night with 3 other friends because they are locals and they keep encourgaing me to give it a go and I was so amaze with some of the most rediculous reviews that were written about this place. The staff here were amazing and all the food are very well presented and fresh. I like the small cosy environment and and the decoration is very unique qnd warm. This is definitely a great place to visit and trust me I am a very hard judge when it come to restraurant dinning. The are large selection of sushi platters and hot dishes. They have a huge selection of sake and white and red wine as well. I agree with Eva, one of the diner, you can read the review but try it for yourself. This definitely my recommendation for japanese food.
Most Creative Idea!!!. The sushi dishes are very creative serve on plates that is place on floating boat. great idea. The good thing is the pricing, very reaonable and the food are so well presented and fresh. Got to love it! The Kawa-Sake Platter is a must.
Freshest Sushi and Japanese Food. Great Chef preparing the finest sushi right in front of you and put them in the sushi boat at the bar where you can choose which ever ones you like. Grest idea and gorgeous food. Will be back for sure!!
Great place and beautiful food. Try it for your self.
Love this new restaurant. The food, the environment is beautiful. A large selection of sake and wine.
Recommend this place.
Delicious! Just delicious! Everything from the sashimi to the ebi tempura to the takoyaki and goma wakame was devine! All fresh and so yummy! This is my local Japanese fix!!

Love Sushi boat. Beautiful little restaurant.Love the sushi on the boat..Will come back with my friends and family
Loved KAWA-SAKE sushi boat. Enjoying the night experienced at Kawa Sake. A different perspective in serving food "sushi on floating boat". Food was awesome. Had the soft shell crab and sushi off the floating boat. Fabulous decor and staff was friendly. Highly recommended. Will b back for more.
GREAT VALUE & HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I have been coming to Kawa-Sake for a few times since it opens. I have enjoyed wonderful fresh sushi, the Sashimi and the grills. I am defitely coming back. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
