Review Java Cafe - Yarraville

Francis Elefano
During a busy time, Cafe Java was able to provide us seating for 8 people. Thank you. Good environment with indoor and outdoor seating, and a fully stocked bar. They use T2 tea which was great. Polite staff. Only minus 1 star because one of our group's food tickets got dropped in the kitchen which delayed service. Otherwise highly recommended.

Relaxed, unhurried and unpretentious local cafe with a strong following of loyal customers sitting around to chat and pass the day. Food quite good and happy hour wine just $6 a glass.

Nice coffee here. Seating outside. It has plenty of cakes and a lunch/brunch and breakfast menu. It’s next door to Sun Theatre

Nice latte, quiet environment, polite staff, and the sweetest desserts you'll find!

Kind staff, great portions. Food is pretty good. The oversized burger is very impressive to look at! A bit more challenging to eat, and definitely not the best burger in town... The steak sandwich was not bad. Blue Heaven milkshake is delicious 😋 Will probably come back to try other things on the menu.

Lovely Cafe. Reasonably priced, good portions and a nice atmosphere. Two things that are a rarity in these sourdough and avo times that this cafe does, sourdough that doesn't break your jaw and butter on the toast! Definitely coming back to Java.

Dropped by for my morning soy cappacino and couldn't resist the almond croissant 🥐. This place is in a great location right in the heart of yarraville. The window seats with the cushions are a great spot to sit down and enjoy the area. The croissant was delicious matched perfectly with the coffee finished with some sparkling water and I was set for the day.

Great place for a meal, or a small coffee with a treat. The pastries and wide variety of cake slices were fresh. Our order came fairly quickly, which I was happy about. If you were sitting on the chairs, they may have been a bit wobbly, so every time you tried to cut the cake (with the provided knife and fork), the table shook and everyone stared at you .... Apart from that, great!

Wasn’t too bad - interior is funky, menu provides a number of options and prices are decent. However, it was a bit cramped, the staff weren’t overly polite and the poached eggs were super undercooked 👎

Found the service here to be quite friendly. Food is basic but decent. Good location near the Sun Theatre.
FOOD TRIP
Java Cafe is a simple eatery that serves up generous portions of average food. The cafe itself is dated and aged but seats are still comfy. Affordable prices for meals but probably wouldn't come back. Iced Coffee $6 . Decent iced coffee. Coffee part was bitter but better after stirring in ice cream ★★

I come here often whenever I’m in Yarraville and hope for the experience to be slightly better than before but unfortunately, it’s quite the opposite. I usually order the Dimare (poached eggs, salmon on a muffin) and whilst the poached eggs are beyond poached (very cooked and solid on the inside) this time around, I felt a little sick after eating it. Not sure why. Coffee was good, service is quite average. Overall, ok but they need new chefs.

Came here for late brunch with my niece. Despite the the bad reviews. And ended up ordering the Avocado & salmon Bruschetta which was interesting & not a positive manner. The salmon had oxidation around the edges & I was honestly scared to put it in my mouth. The only reason why I gave it a 3/5 is the lamb shank was quite good not the best I’ve had but it was a step up from the bruschetta. My niece also enjoyed her burger. And in there defence the waiter did try to accommodate me with anything complementary to make up for the bruschetta debacle. The service was good & attentive.

Cozy interior and coffee was very good, but that's where it stops. Poached eggs were completely overcooked, not firm but downright hard-boiled, for all three of us. Menu is very standard, nothing interesting at all. They are serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, so maybe they are just trying to do too many things.

Java, defiantly not a place I would like to eat at again. I ordered the Crisby chicken burger with fries and wasn’t pleased with the meal, unfortunately. The lettuce was not fresh and had defiantly been sitting in a fringe for over a month because it smelt, looked and tasted horrible which overall ruined the flavour of the chicken (as that was nice)! The service was quite repugnant from the older staff as they were rude placing orders, placing cutlery and serving there dishes. The staff truely need a workplace check because there attitude towards other customers and myself were DISGUSTING!
Martin
Never had a bad experience. Best coffee & cake and they are happy to split a milk shake so the kids are happy. <br/>Tried a burger yesterday - OMG - fantastic !!!!

I can't understand the negative reviews, I have been here a few times, the coffee is always great the staff attentive and service is great, especially Harry who always greets us with a smile and ready to share a joke. What a great spot for a pre or post coffee and a snack before going to the iconic sun theatre.

Just stopped for a quick coffee after a stressful job interview. Yummoooo I really enjoyed it. Staff were polite and helpful. Thank. I will be back
Jane
Miserable, unfriendly service. Just had coffee and soup which was average but the lack of atmosphere makes you want to eat and get the hell out of there. Waitress was unfriendly and not helpful. Just draining...

Wouldn't even eat here again. I ordered egg benedict with salmon plus some spinach to go with it. I was so confused and put off by the way the food was presented, the spinach looked like it was just an old spinach that was drained and dumped on the plate. It was disgusting to look at. I was very disappointed.

Quick and easy is what comes to mind after we came here for drinks and dessert. Teas were fine. Desserts are by a supplier so can't really fault Java but man, the lemon meringue was so sweet! Could only get through half of it. The desserts basically are so so.

I have been wanting to visit this place despite the low ratings, mostly because it is always packed and it is by the Sun Theatre, and I thought the ratings might be a bit "emotional". Well, no, they are quite accurate. <br/><br/>Good things<br/>+ Nice cosy place<br/>+ Nice hard-working staff.<br/>+ Food comes out quickly.<br/>+ Large serving portions. <br/><br/>OK Things<br/>= Coffee<br/><br/>Bad things<br/>- The food. I ordered the risotto with spinach and  mushrooms. Huge plate, it tasted of bad chicken stock, it was a bit too soggy not really creamy, and those champignons were really chewy-gummy, too big, too uncooked. I couldn't eat much, even though I was hungry. I rarely leave anything on my plate, so there you have it.  <br/>- Overly sweet cakes, the couple next to me said.<br/>- High prices one pays for the quality of food one gets.
Jules
I like the chicken parmigiana's and the fact that it's next to the iconic sun theatre but other then that I don't really enjoy coming here. The coffees are seriously that bad, do they actually know how to make them? I also understand they're probably in an expensive pocket in yarraville but if you're gonna have such expensive items on the menu at least make them a little more satisfying. <br/><br/>The sun theatre sometimes gives away the popcorn at the end of the night so that's a bit of a bonus I guess, oh and there's always that bloke with the parrot on his shoulder which is always cool to see. <br/><br/>

I am not one who tries to be negative about many things, however if there is one place in which I am happy to avoid, it is this place. <br/>I have been here on many occasions and have never really been impressed with the scenery, inside and outside. <br/>The coffee is very hit and miss and I haven't had many standout meal experiences here.<br/>

This is the worst breakfast I have EVER had! I ordered the big brekkie, but asked to swap the bacon and chorizo for something vego. What came out was a 1/4 piece of avocado that was rock solid and inedible. The poached eggs were overdone. Mushrooms were wet and soggy and the hash brown was undercooked, unfortunately raw potato just isn't my thing. I'm not sure how this cafe survives in such a great little spot. Next time I'll go across the road to cornershop!

Awesome location, very cosy lil cafe in yarraville, great coffee and hot chocolate and vanilla slice to die for! Reasonably priced and main meals also a hit!

Order the Dahl!!! It is delicious! Lots of yummy treats to serve your taste buds too. Ambience leaves a little to be desired but it's a great location next to the cinema.

I was looking for a place to fill my empty stomach during the 'everywhere great is still closed' period after the new year. And I saw this place, full of people outside the cafe. Looked impressive.<br/>Coffee was fine, not perfect but above average sip you would get in the west suburbs. We ordered a risotto and a grilled salmon. Both were good. I checked the review after finished the meal and was shocked to find out such low rating. Maybe we are lucky :)<br/><br/>There were mysterious fibre left in the bottom of the latte cup. Felt like tissue or Sth. Disgusted but the waiter was nice and sincerely offered another drink for quite a few times even though I have rejected that.
Danielle
Boring menu, poorly prepared food and not great service! Second time there in a couple of years and not much has changed. Shame that a cafe in such a great spot can't do better!

Took my daughter their for lunch before a movie. Wasn't too bad. Service was quick and friendly. Food was pretty average for the price. Can't comment on the coffee as we didn't have one. Would go back and give them another try.

First of all, wedges got about 5 in a tiny bowl. Creep who makes the coffee needs to stop checking customers out. And the music sucks. Too many underage smokers hanging out side. And Java just needs to be knocked down. It's tragic.

Java has become my nightly place to have a cup of tea. I am a sucker for great service and that's all I've had here. Keep it up guys :).
Adam Conti
Really, really, really not the greatest coffee. 9 times out of 10, my coffee is burnt or tastes like dust. Nice setting, but that's about it.

I had a particularly negative and rather embarrassing experience Java today.I've been visiting this little cafe in the mornings for a coffee, light breakfast and a cigarette every Saturday before going to the movies next door. The coffee isn't particularly great, and the breakfast is a little pricey for what you get, but i'm a creature of habit and the cafe is conveniently located. Anyway, it was pretty busy this morning, as it usually is on the weekends, and I took my seat in the outside smoking area, sipping my coffee and enjoying the sun. I had barely lit my cigarette when the waitress  walked up and asked if I would mind giving up my seat so that she could push my table together with another 4-seater so that I family could sit in my place and watch their children play on the grassy alcove outside he cafe. I was a little put-out. I'd piked this spot specifically for the sun. Not wanting to be a scrooge I agreed and the waitress lead me over to only other free table available- huddled in a corner near a family with a child. I was a little apprehensive about smoking near a kid, and the waitress disappeared as soon as I was seated to set my former table for the greedy family who usurped my sunny seat. Not 10 seconds after being seated the woman at the table with the kid turned around and started yelling at me about the smoke. I apologized and explained that I had already lit the cigarette before the waitress kicked me off of my beloved table. The woman was relentlessly rude, and not wanting to kick up a fuss I got up and left. As I left the waitress asked "What's wrong?" I explained that the family near me wasn't impressed with my smoking. The waitress said "Oh, i'm sorry" and continued setting the table. I felt extremely awkward. There was no other seats available, and I was left shifting from foot to foot until I decided just to leave and never return. I'm offended, to say the least. I'm offended by the way I was treated. It's unfair for a waitress to ask an already seated patron to move, especially when there are no alternative seats available. Basically I feel like I was kicked out. It was humiliating, degrading, and I definitely won't be back. From now on my pre-movie coffee will be at the cafe across the road.

Do not come!!! You would th.... Do not come!!!<br/>You would think they would step it up given the compotition in the area. The coffee was bad, my porridge was cold and our omellete wasn't even an omellete and was so dry we couldnt eat it! I'm surprised how busy it was but it was Easter Monday and many places were shut!!

If you don't mind the wafts of popcorn...this cafe is a great place for dogs.

Look at the food very very carefully. I bought 2 takeaway coffees here and a banana cake. Turns out there was mould on the side of the cake. Now I know why there is less custom here than across the street. I will be doing that from now on!!

Don't understand. I really don't understand how a place like this is still surviving Yarraville. With so many great cafes around it. The owners of this place obviously do not care at all about service or product quality. And it is frankly unfair that they hog the great corner location with their awful customer service and rubbish food. Give it up. Sell it to someone who knows how to run a cafe.
Gem H
Very disorganised, all our meals came at different times, the iced chocolate was just ice cream and chocolate sauce dumped in a glass of milk, the bacon was undercooked and it took them three goes to bring us enough glasses for 4 of us wanting water! Need to lift their game with the quality of competing food venues around Yarraville!
Ross
Worst coffee in Yarraville - I've had nicer instant and I don't like instant.

Coffee with friends. Evening coffee with friends at the Java, staff not happy with people sitting and losing track of time. When we overstayed our welcome, the waitress with the long dark hair came by the table and advised our group in a low voice that the cafe was closing in 10 mins. She then proceeded to collect the sugar sachets from our table and went behind the counter thinking she could not be heard and said to the other staff whilst snapping fingers " and that's how it's done" . Very poor.

Had breakfast here today...not happy. Breakfast was way to small for the price i paid: 25.50 $ for toast with avocado poached eggs and smoke salmon..it was ok but nothing special for that price, to be honest i had better food around... on the top of this let s not talk about the customer service.. when we walked in, nobody said anything to us till a lazy waitress with long dark hair was talking to us with signs only ( she had a face of someone that didn t want to be there at all).. i won t be going back
Tania
HORRIBLE coffee, HORRIBLE customer service. If you're looking for great coffee in yarraville, steer clear of this place. My 1st coffee tasted like water and milk, 2nd coffee burnt to the max. Told waitress, and all I got was a vague 'oh sorry'. Ridiculous! Don't waste your time or money.
Daria
Boss pancakes!
Fiona Marment
This place used to be different. Better,in fact. Now..not so sure. Sardine class service, tepid, burnt, weak coffee and a pall of cigarette smoke where there are signs pleading for it not to be there.

Don't bother. Sunday morning breakfast , I ordered sour dough toast and apple juice . After 30 min iMy toast arrived already buttered and vegemite . I asked the waitress to take it back as the 'butter had melted into the bread' and I prefer to butter my own. 20 min latter I got 3 pieces of toast with Vegemite and no butter. I asked for butter and I got 2 small western star packs . On opening them I found they were melted so I ditched the idea of buttering my toast ate half a slice with only vegemite , then left . Now I know why people were queuing up across the road at The Corner Shop!

When i write a negative review of one of melbournes gzillion cafes it is usually because of the service. Java knows how to look after people. On a couple of occasions my basic poached egg or other simple order was not quite right. once i didnt even have to complain and the lovely lovely woman serving tables must have realised, apologised, fixed the problem and gave me complementary service as well!! Amazing!. While Java doesnt serve scrambled eggs with cheese flown in from italy and truffle oil, more your standard fare, I will be back again again and again because i am sick of cool baristas, off hand service by folks who have great tattoos and over charging - give me this wonderful woman's great service any day!

Java!. I've been to Java on multiple occasions and have never had a bad experience there. The staff are always lovely, the food has always been good and its never too busy. I prefer Java over a lot of other cafes and restaurants which claim higher quality, not just in Yarraville but the surrounding suburbs as well.<br/>It has a great atmosphere and I have had some of my happiest times with friends there.
Jisda_1
Great location but Parma was not great. Chose to eat at the Java cafe because it has a good corner location and I could eat outside, and it seemed to be busy so I thought it was a popular cafe (I'm not a Yarraville local.) The chicken Parma I ordered was terrible, was so soggy and not nicely crumbed and cooked. Could have been microwaved for what it tasted like. The only thing that made it eatable was the cheese put on it. Chips were nice.<br/><br/>I'd come back for a casual drink or catch up because the location is good but not sure about another Parma or other meals here.
Kate
Dreadful undrinkable coffee, staff talking too loudly about rubbish, toasted sandwich dry and tasted stale, I'd been warned not to go there, should have listened.
Jac
Lovely staff and amazing coffee. Best in the area though havent tried the food
Mia32
Avoid it nothing special. Beef burger was inedible was like a very cheap sausage meat left it behind along with a chewy burger bun and burnt bacon. The Atlantic salmon was the special was a big piece but tasted very average, staff were a bit lost brought out a coffee but forgot the second drink, food came out but no cutlery, glasses were dirty.as you pay before you eat no ones asks how the food was.my advice walk past it.
Peter Gallagher
You get what you pay for. Cheap prices - inoffensive meals. Nothing spectacular. Main problem - I had to return a champagne flute with a crack in it, then 3 glasses for water because they were chipped - and they didn't have any more glasses so I've sat for ten minutes waiting while they washed glasses! Really? You didn't have enough glasses? And the place was hardly busy. Ho hum.
Tastebuds
Dog-friendly Java. Had a soy cappuccino which was good, nice temperature (i.e. hot not lukewarm). The poached eggs with bacon on the side was also good - eggs cooked nicely, generous side serve of bacon. Not sure about having to order at the counter, but didn't have to wait long and I guess this is better than having to sit there wondering if you're going to be served?! <br/><br/>Had to move tables to get away from the foul-mouthed loud-talking know-it-all at the next table - a good move as our next neighbour was a pleasant lady dining solo with her dog, who appreciated being fed bacon rinds!<br/><br/>Heaters appreciated in the cold weather. Outside area also protected by sheets of glass to keep wind out.
SpiceMike
Its a smokey grimy dive unfortunately .Coffee was bitter and burnt and awwful..really awful.Attracts loud obnoxious young smoking joins who need somewhere to hangout.

Massive Portions. I had dinner here with my housemate after we watched a movie at the Sun Theatre and it was massive. Good value for money for such a big meal, but I couldn't finish it! The service was really friendly too, I recommend!
Andrew
Java this morning, good service & a nice hot latte! I was happy with that. :)
TheSmithsFan
Average coffee, atrocious service and rude staff and to top it off a dirty spoon with the qantas emblem. Would not recommend.

Big Portion one Big Problem. My partner, friend and I popped in to Java for lunch on Saturday. The food was ok, I ordered the Burger which came out really quickly and was huge to say the least. <br/>Whilst tackling my lunch sitting outside the local homeless person - Michelle approached our table asking my boyfriend if he said she was crazy, he hadn't and said so. Michelle then took a chair from the next table to ours and sat outside the cinema, hurling abuse at people who were in the que to watch a film. About 10 minutes later Michelle approached our table again and another go at my boyfriend, not getting a rise from him she then went in to the cafe and must have told the staff something about us as a few minutes later we were approached by a member of staff whose reaction was 'what did you say to upset Michelle?' I find this rather strange as Michelle was not a paying customer at the time and was making a nusance of herself to us and other paying customers. I would have though the staff would have appologised and we would have understood. We are locals in Yarraville so have seen how othe cafe's, bars and restaurants are able to handle Michelle, certainly blaming your paying customers for upsetting her is not one of them.
Freezing Hot
Although we didn't have a long wait for food, when it came to ordering<br/>Drinks the woman at the front counter took her sweet time to serve us. She proceeded to clean our glasses with a tissue which is when we decided to<br/>go for a beverage not requiring one<br/>of their dirty glasses. Food is ok, had better and worse so this falls somewhere in between.
Des Bastin
Rude unhelpful Jerk took order needs to get a job outside customer service

Thanks for serving me a proper, full cup of coffee when the half-wits directly across from you could only manage to give me 3/4 of a cup.

Could've done it better ourselves. Food was average - the buttermilk pancakes were flat, definitely not fluffy, only came with a drizzle of maple syrup, sprinkle of icing sugar and a randomly cut banana (which cost me $3 extra, when it's only $2.49 per kilo at the supermarket). I can honestly make better pancakes with much better presentation at home. Same goes with the muffin with bacon tomato and avocado. It doesn't require much skill apart from cutting the ingredients up and stacking them one on top of another. Coffee was not enjoyable. Can't exactly pinpoint what was wrong with it because i had no inclination to drink it throughout my meal and ended up finishing it in 2.4 seconds before I left. <br/><br/>Only positive: Wedges were good. <br/><br/>Not going back again.
NevilleBamshoot
Avoid. Bland cakes, tasteless hot chocolate, awful milkshakes.
Theinvisiblereviewer
Dont Bother. Having decided to visit this outwardly nice and trendy appearing cafe on a not so busy weekday afternoon one would think they would be happy for the patronage. Oh how wrong can one be. The male barista with short black hair did not mutter a single word when we ordered our coffee's & cakes. Not even a thank you as we handed over our money. It appeared that we were clearly an interruption to his not so busy day. To make things worse he messed up the order & when we decided to go to the fridge to buy a bottle of drink he merely stood in the door talking with another staff member looking over at us, made eye contact but yet still didn't bother to come over and serve us. Needless to say we will never return to this cafe. Thankfully there are many other cafe's in the local area.
Cellar_door07
New to the area, I was open to trying new places. Had not read any reviews and the place looked quite busy - usually a good sign. <br/>I found it to be very disappointing considering how much it cost for breakfast. <br/>Bad coffee, bad (and overpriced) food and bad service. Three strikes - Java's out.
Mellypop21
Odd experience at Java. We experienced a strange brunch at Java.<br/><br/>You have to order at the counter which unfortunately forces you to stand in the walkway to the kitchen, getting in the staff's way (their grumpy faces told us they didn't appreciate this, but not much we could do!)<br/><br/>We were served a bottle of wonderfully cold water which was very much appreciated on a hot day but they gave us paper coffee cups to drink from. Strange and not very environmentally friendly in yuppie Yarraville.<br/><br/>Flat white was scalding and bitter and had to be returned. Barista was happy to make it again and the second effort was more pleasing.<br/><br/>Meals were OK but lacked any sophistication. I appreciated a fresh salad being made for me when I requested mine with no onion (often cafes will just pick onion out of a prepared salad and serve it up - yuck). Meatballs were spicy and tasty.<br/><br/>Friend ordered poached eggs on toast with avocado, eggs were poached perfectly (big tick) but half a peeled avocado was dumped on his plate - it did the trick but seemed like Java had no idea how to serve avocado and it looked a little strange.<br/><br/>Java is a no frills kind of place but the food was good.
Jes LittleCoy
I found their coffee quite good, I must have been served by a different barista to other reviewers. The waitress looking after us was really friendly and attentive. The food on the other hand is my only complaint. The chicken nuggets and chips were overcooked and dry, the risotto had a cheese overload taste that was hard to keep eating. Ended up leaving the food at the table barely eaten.
Dan Condon
I actually found the service quite pleasant, contrary to other reviews, but I can't rave about my Java experience. The food was passable without being great, coffee was a little lacking in kick (though that could be a personal taste thing), but the biggest issue was the epic wait for food. Forty minutes for a couple of simple meals seems excessive.
NL
Christmas festivities must have zapped the staff as all three forgot how to smile & greet customers. Boxing Day was a buzz of locals wanting a coffee, after all we do like our cafes! Great these guys were open but honestly coffee was horrible, instant would have been better, and well service was not good at all. We left with cups of coffee full on the table and on a hunt for opening hours of trusted good cafes around the corner.
Mel-e-Mel
Wlak across the road to.corner shop, don't bother with this place, dont even look at it as you walk by. Nearly everywhere in yarraville serves better coffee, not good enough.
NJ
Terrible coffee, dry cake that have been on display for too long, rude staff, dirty spoons....
Fi
Rude staff. Particularly short dark haired waiter
Stacey
Location, location.. A great little place for coffee and cake before/ after a movie. The meals can be a little hit and miss and the service is a little relaxed but the spaghetti and meatballs are good and the cake selection plentiful.
Ben McKenzie
Not for dining. If all you're after is a quick coffee, Java might be okay, but when sitting for a pleasant breakfast with friends we found the food lacklustre and the service likewise. Canned baked beans were passed off as home made (we asked, before and after ordering, and got different answers) and standard "big breakfast" style meal was uninspiring, while meals arrived slowly and several drinks orders were forgotten.<br/><br/>Perhaps we caught them on an off day, but it wasn't that busy. Average at best.
