I visit friend or pho regularly for my pho hit! And it’s always awesome! The staff are friendly and the food is super tasty. The prices are also decent. Today I also tried the mushroom crepes and they were fantastic. The dipping sauce was very nice an accompanied the crepe well.
Love the beef pho! It comes with a rich beef broth and lots of trimmings. My partner had the chicken broth which oddly comes with a veg broth (not chicken) and thought it was very good but not the best he had had. The savory crepes were also fantastic but hard to eat so maybe don't go here on a first date! The range of Vietnamese beers is the best I've seen and I loved the one I tried. Will definitely be back.
Amazing food and great atmosphere!
Stand out dishes:
1. Banh Mi with Pork Crackling. Best banh mi I’ve ever had. The pork crackling has the most satisfying crunch and the sauce is delicious
2. Fried Chicken. This is the most addictive fried chicken I’ve ever had. Crispy and juicy and to die for
3. Pho. A classic pho that is oh so satisfying every time
We found Friend or Pho quite by accident while en route to elsewhere. I tried Beef Pho, my partner the Chicken Salad. We both loved our meals. The Vietnamese lemonade with gin was ace! We'll be back.
This is a cute little place that serves decent Vietnamese food. The best part about this place are the friendly staff. The pho is nicely done. The decor is a bit stark, but is not distracting.
Another Vietnamese hipster joint that was pretty decent.
Lovely staff. Food was tasty. Disappointed that we couldn’t change pho noodles to egg noodles. The Vietnamese pork and prawn pancake was delicious, more herbs and lettuce to wrap would be ideal. The chicken pho was lovely, great chicken, however, not enough meat.
Also if they could turn down the music in the upstairs seating as it was abit too loud.
Take your lover, friends and family here for tasty Vietnamese cuisines.
Would return but not for awhile as there are plenty or traditional Vietnamese restaurants and plenty of restaurants in Yarraville.
The springrolls are amazing with a moist mushroom filling.
The vegan pho was yummy but the banh xeo (Vietnamese savoury pancakes) were mediocre.
Pho seems to be everywhere these days. Which is a good thing because I love pho. The pho is quite good with decent quality chicken and stock.
Lunch - Broken rice with grilled pork and the trimmings and crispy chicken ribs.
Broken rice comes with sauce, it was delicious. The meat loaf was on the dense side, and the pickled carrots were a little bit on the fresh side - not so pickled. Nonetheless, delish.
Chicken ribs were also tasty, you can almost see the MSG granules on it. 😅
Will be back to try other things.
This restaurant is built into an old townhouse, giving it a really intimate feel. The decor and service are great, and the staff are sure to bring a smile to your face. The food is pretty solid too, especially the banh mi, but if you're used to having Vietnamese in the west, you might not be blown away. Overall, a good experience!
Food was tasty - had the beef pho and fried chicken wings, all delicious! Good service and nice setting outside. I don't come to Yarraville often but it's definitely a worthwhile option next time I'm here..
Heard about his place, so I decided to try it out for myself. Great decoration, very clean and I love the plants! I ordered beef pho and chicken ribs. The food came out fresh, hot and steamy from the kitchen. I couldn't stop eating, it was so delicious. I will definitely come back and tell friends about this place. Thanks for a great meal!
Good Pho, probably not the best I've had or can come by, but still decent to have if you're in the area. However, the banh mi is excellent and well worth the try.
Well isn't this a fun new addition to Yarraville! The place has a prime location and a funky fit out to boot, but alas - none of that matters if the food isn't up to par. And the 3 meals I've tried were great! The standout were the fried chicken ribs, followed closely by the asian slaw. I could take or leave the bahn mi - but my standards are a little high due to living too close to Footscray so long and being spoilt for amazing quality for half the price. I'm yet to sample the pho but that's next on the menu.
Looking forward to watching them grow and the menu evolve.
New style Viet restaurant. A small but very good menu with all the common favourites. I've been here many times and can honestly say that all dishes are up to par and flavours are on point. Portions are smaller than old skool Viet restaurants but I don't mind that, it's still filling. The setting is quite hip with indoor setting in an old terrace style house and outdoor seating opposite the Theatre under lights and with astro turf, perfect for bringing the puppies along. My only quibble is the often long wait for meals to be made and brought out no matter if they have 30 customers or 3. Something to be worked on but a very good option in Yarraville.
Great location. Weird fit out as it is a little confusing as to where and how you order when you first walk in, but we grabbed a Banh Mi and sat outside and it was delicious! Lots of chilli and a great hoisin sauce, I'll definitely be going back.
Yum! Super tasty and fresh flavours. Can't wait to come here again! The service was friendly and are happy to answer questions. The portion size was perfect and I was satisfied without getting bloated.
My partner and I came here for lunch today and we are so glad we did! We shared chicken ribs for a starter and had a bowl of pho each. Omg so yummy! The chicken ribs were cooked perfectly and the batter was nice and crunchy. The pho was super tasty and the soup had a clean flavour and finish. Unlike many places in Footscray, there is no MSG in the pho (this was confirmed by the waitress), so I didn't feel super thirsty after the meal and I could enjoy sipping away at the soup even after finishing the noodles. The staff were super friendly and helpful. This place is awesome and is definitely going to be a hit in Yarraville and a regular haunt for my partner and I!
Really fresh and tasty pho in Yarraville! Not at lot of tables if you are looking to dine in but outdoor terrace is great on a nice night. Have also had take away which the pic attached is from - only disappointing part was the container it came in - not ideal for liquid with it leaking quite a bit.
Tasty food and pretty good prices for Yarraville. I thought the servings were a decent size too. Good to be able to let the kids run riot on the pop up park while you enjoy a feed.
New Vietnamese restaurant located nice and close to the train station and the famous Sun theater. Had a late dinner after a movie and was very satisfied with Pho.
Went after a movie and had the chicken ribs, beef pho and the pork n pawn Xia (pancake?) ... Everything was awesome... Service was friendly, cheerful and attentive.. Meals came out quickly (wasn't busy) and we'll defiantly be back - for eat in and take away... Really impressed..
Been looking forward to this vietnamese restaurant opening up in the 'Ville - located opposite the sun theatre. Sitting outside in the funky cage style set up they've got going on was great option for a warm night. Inside looks quite compact and close tables. Small menu offering but plenty of interesting options to choose from. Tried the beef pho and it was excellent and a good size - not too big. Ask for fresh chili when ordering if you need a kick. The banh hoi pork was delicious to share. when sitting outside you need to go inside to order. The meals took quite a while to come out but it was a busy night and only just opened. Good option too for takeaway! I'm sure I'll be back for that!
Extremely cute little place located in an old terrace opposite the Sun Theatre, the charmingly named "Friend Or Pho" is a great addition to the busy entertainment district of Yarraville. While seating inside is fairly limited, there is ample outside seating, both on a bench located under the awning at the entrance, several tables located on the property, and also on the public car-free area in front of FoP.
The menu is relatively limited, but what is done is done very well. The banh mi are very tasty, although on my visit could have benefited from some more in the way of non-meat fillings. The chicken ribs are excellent, and some of the best fried chicken I've had in Melbourne - which certainly isn't lacking in the fried chicken steaks...err stakes. Both the mushroom and pork banh xeo are also excellent, and the pho is also noteworthy in a city that is full to overflowing with good pho joints.
Yarraville has firmly established itself as a place to come for quality, casual meals, and FoP is a lively venue serving up great food that fills a gap in what is available in the area. I highly recommend it for a pre- or post-movie meal, or if you are in the area and hankering for some great Vietnamese food. That being said it isn't that far to the Vietnamese mecca of Footscray, but it is worth coming here for the ambience alone.
Very good Cơm tấm, not abso-f-lutely awesomesauce, but it's the best I've had so far. There are still plenty of Vietnamese places in Melbourne I've never been (it makes it harder that most places only promote their pho, you have to specifically ask if they do Cơm tấm).
The pork chop was the best pork chop I ever had, meat was tender, easy to cut and flavourful. The shredded pork and pork meatloaf was OK, better than average. Fried egg was done as it should be. The fried chicken ribs was OK, better than average. Very delicate flavour so don't eat it with rice.
Good portion Cơm tấm for $13. Service was friendly, quirky decor, food can come a little faster but the steaming broken rice that arrived on my table more than makes up for it.
I'm loving this place, twice in two days.
1. Pho -perfect
2. Bahn Mi (spelling) - not traditional, but scrumptious
3. Chicken Wings - big tick, extra tick for the crunchy topping
I had been meaning to try this place for a while and did so tonight. Ordered the chicken ribs and beef pho which were delicious. The ribs were a definite highlight and the pho was good. There is no table service and you need to order at the counter.
Great service and food. Had the vegetarian Pho and spring rolls, would come back for sure.
We ordered pho, bao and rice paper rolls, home delivered. The bao and rolls were perfectly delicious. The pho broth wasn’t as tasty as some others we’ve had, but good nonetheless. Loved all of the sauces that came with the dishes. Would definitely order again.
The best Vietnamese we've had in a while.A lot of happy noises were made while eating. We ordered it for dinner last night then again for lunch today because the pho is so incredibly good. Will be sure to make it a regular thing!
The rice paper rolls are amazing. The pork ones have fantastic crackling and the crispy chicken ones are great too. Roll’d should be embarrassed by the generosity of the protein and filling. Finally a good take away in Yarraville.
