Yes service was slow to begin.  However it was well worth the wait and our kids love this place they keep asking to go.This is our 3rd or so visit (our first this year). The gentleman said I will just bring out an array of stuff and we said go for it. The chicken and fish are fresh and stunningly simple. Yet tastes so good. The chicken stew is amazing as is the lamb. The dishes don't look very big however by the end of it we are all full. Just beware - there is a sauce they bring out and it is sooooo hot. I avoid it at all costs. The best part of this dinner is the cost - for 5 of us it cost just over $60 and we all left full and happy. Definitely worth a visit but don't be expecting the best looking place in town. And again the wait is worth it.

Simple ok experience

Purchase a Groupon voucher with two mains, two desserts and soft drinks each. We decided to try a new culture array of food of Nubia. I was abit hesitant because of the past reviews and It turn out to be a satisfying ok experience .

We had the lahama (grilled lamb) and the samak ( deep fried Nile perch fish) served with rice (should be warmer but ok )and /or warm flat bread. We decided to get Nubia chilli ( it was hot) and Nubia mish to go with it because mains didn't come with sauces . Friend had the Nubia style spice tea which goes well with the desserts (Basta and Bala el sham). Friendly service by Khalid. If your a adventurous open foodie, give it a go. Is a worth a try.

Visited for dinner with a Scoopon. It was a wonderful experience because I had not tried Sudanese food before. The waitress was very helpful to explain the dishes, which region they are from and how the meals are traditionally eaten.

Great experience. Amazing service. Ambience could use some help but this does not detract from the overall experience given all of the other features which are more than redeeming. The grilled lamb and the Fried Chicken were excellent as was the sujuk. Good choice of bottled soft drinks.

A Sudanese cuisine not to be miss! I've been here twice within a span of 3 years. I must say the quality remains the same. The meat was super tender, cooked with charcoal. The meat/fish taste are full of wonderful flavours and make sure you add a bit of chilli for some kick. Definitely be back again.

As it was our group's first visit to an African restaurant, the friendly owner offered us a special banquet to try a variety of dishes. We enjoyed the food and felt very welcome, and look forward to coming back soon.

Hands down the best African I've had so far. The owner organised a custom dinner based on the flavours and type of dishes we prefer and the outcome blew our minds. We had the lamb red curry, stir fried lamb, falafel, eggplant sauce, sausages. We are definitely coming back very soon and leaving some room for dessert!

Catering Success!. Nubia provided food for 80 people at an important Global Health Function at Notre Dame University - aside from having been a big fan of the amazing food at Nubia (that rice and lamb!!!!) they did an absolutely amazing job for us with falafel, samosas and lamb sausages. Never seen medical students so happy :) Thanks Nubia!

Tasty, authentic food. We used a Scoopon, so were a bit limited in our choices, though the owner did allow us an extra meal to enable us to try another dish. He was very friendly and chatty and explained all about Sudanese food to us. Unfortunately the place was close to empty except for a couple of African men who had a quick meal, therefore it was very quiet and lacking ambience. We suggested a recording of African music would be nice. Apparently they have a musician playing when its busy. The food was very tasty with lots of different spices. I agree with someone else that it wasn't piping hot, but perhaps that's how its eaten, especially the entrée of bread and dip which is eaten with the fingers. We ordered extras, of cake (Basta) and spicy coffee with ginger, which was different and tasty. Give it a go, and have a chat with the owner, who will help you out with choices. Its authentic.

Wonderful and authentic experience. We have gone to this restaurant for my birthday dinner as a treat. It was wonderful!!!
Service was great, very friendly and thoroughly enjoyable. Food came quick and was just the right temperature and very delicious! The restaurant owner personally escorted us at the end to the door and explained the origins of the restaurant. Prices were extremely reasonable for the huge size dishes. We had plenty to eat and still leftovers to take home! Loved the authenticity of the cuisine and the unique nowadays use of ochra which both me and my husband loved! Overall we will definitely visit them more often! :)

Fantastic place. What a find! If I lived locally I would be here all the time. Great service - the waiter advised us of the most popular entree dishes and said we would not be disappointed. He was right. We were also advised us that our choice of mains to share amongst the group didn't compliment each other as they were both dry dishes and he provided a suggestion which we happily went along with. Then gave us a little nod saying "I'll bring something extra for you". Thank you sir! Absolutely correct in his advice and he did bring out an extra dish as promised. The food was perfect. Each of our group had a different favorite (I just loved the Fried Chicken, two others raved about the grilled lamb and another couple thought the chicken stew was the best. But we all agreed, every dish was just perfect. We struggled to finish everything that was served as they were generous portion sizes too. After we had finished we chatted for a little while with the waiter/owner. What a lovely person, told us about why they started the restaurant, some of his history and that the women cooking are African housewives (trained to comply with health and safety) but the point was this is authentic African home cooking. What a great experience. I believe him when he says this isn't just about making money. There seems to be a real love of sharing their food and of interacting with their customers. For the record, I used a scoupon, but it would have been great value had we paid normal prices.

Great food, great price, great service. Friendly staff, excellent food (both quality and quantity) and excellent price (taster for 2 consisted of falafels, lamb curry, a delicious nutty eggplant dip, 2 types of bread, delicious fried lamb with rice and the chilli sauce was delicious and spicy. For $50 my partner and I walked out happy and very full, We will definitely be going back.

Amazing food, hidden little gem. Wow what a little find! Great little family owned restaurant with very good service! I stopped for lunch and had the most amazing African falafel! Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I had a side of the eggplant dip and bread which complimented the falafel perfectly. Definitely worth a visit!

Fantastic flavours. Being a huge fan of African food I just couldn't resist visiting this quant little café once I'd heard about it, and I am so glad that it is so close to home!

I visited Nubia Café for lunch on a Wednesday, and we were a little hesitant as there was only one other table of diners there. However the owner (who also served us) was kind and welcoming, and we really looked forward to the food. Having never tried Sudanese food before we allowed the owner to make recommendations. We ended up ordering the Red Curry, Eggplant Salad and Chicken Stew between three people. Each were served with traditional bread known as Kisra, but they also had Lebanese bread for those who are not fans of the slightly fermented taste.

Each of the dishes came out in a timely manner and were very hearty and flavoursome. The rice was also very nice and as some have mentioned in reviews here could be eaten on its own. We finished with coffee and rice pudding which were lovely. It was a fantastic introduction to Sudanese food, and I really look forward to returning on a Saturday night to check out the live music too! Cheers!

Perfect African Dining. We went to Nubia Cafe on 8 January. We asked the owner, Khalid, who was our waiter to surprise us and everything he brought out was delicious. There were six of us at the table and nearly everyone picked a different dish as their favourite. In true African style, the food is prepared with care rather than pace. Khalid seems very passionate about sharing Sudanese culture with Australians and was delightful to chat to. Sit back, relax and enjoy! By the way, it has a BYO licence.

Understated but delicious and great value. We came past actually looking to go to our local Italian restaurant Ginos but it was closed. So we shrugged our shoulders and looked past the brightly LED lit interior and mini karaoke stage and took a chance on this new appearance on the Yokine Flinders Street strip. The warm hearted owner thoroughly explained the menu to us and we got a mixture of entrees and mains to share between us.

It's BYO (you wouldn't know it though, there wasn't a wine glass in sight) and normally they have a $2 corkage charge but waived it for us. Wine glasses were brought out to us.

All the meals were a hit with the table, especially the grilled lamb and the lamb dip that came with the flatbread. The meals are very reasonably priced and full of flavour.

It's not a fine dining experience, the glasses weren't quite dry and the service was a little slow in clearing the used plates, however on the plus side the service was very friendly, it seemed like an honest to goodness family run establishment and the meals were very tasty which is what we want out of a café diner. The chairs are extremely comfortable and one of the reasons we stayed so long!

If I had to be picky I'd say to replace the cool white LEDs with warm white to make it more inviting, it's like fluoro overload. Also, while not off putting for us at all, the man praying on a mat in the entrance when we first came into the café wasn't off putting for us, it might be for some.

We'll certainly come back, at $60 total for the four of us it certainly didn't break the bank at all and the food is worth returning for. Make sure you try the African falaffels, the lamb-based corn bread dip, and the grilled lamb main dish.

Sudanese Yumminess. A wonderful little place! An amazing array of flavours that are delightfully different. Just what we were looking for! The chicken stew with chili sauce and the refreshingly light African style falafel were absolute faves. The staff are super friendly and informative and add perfectly to the relaxed feel of Nubia Café.

Substance over style. On first impressions its a rather minimal venue in an room that echoes. However once you start having the food, you just don't care anymore. Great food with great value.

Also the staff are very friendly and can even walk in the kitchen if you wanted to. Saw a single group Isomac with a Mazzer grinder, will try the coffee next time.

Don't judge a book by cover.. This place is a hidden gem!

First impressions, we we're all a little thrown off when walking in and and seeing how minimal the venue was. But as soon as we sat down we were greeted by a nice homely warm welcome, by a chap (manager/owner?) that made it clear from the get go that they would happily accommodate to all needs. And that they did.

The food was delicious, authentic and filled with love. Service was awesome and as I said accommodated all needs. Highly recommend Nubia Cafe if you're looking for something different and wish to step out of the western comfort-zone.

Definitely be back!

Great night out. A group of us went to Nubia recently, as i'm a fan of African food so wanted to check it out. I'd heard there were new owners and some reviews hadn't been great so I wasn't sure what to expect. The decor of the cafe is fairly hostile, however i remained hopeful as these 'plastic table/ limited decoration' restaurants are often hidden gems, and that's exactly what Nubia is. The staff were so friendly and very accommodating. We had 2 vegetarians amongst a group of 6- and when taking a while to decide the staff offered to do up a banquet which allowed us to try everything. The banquets consisted of 3 courses, the food was amazing and there was more than enough of it (we took some home as we couldn't eat it all despite trying). Being one of the vegetarians, the vego food was yummy (all of it), and on all accounts reports of the meat dishes were excellent too (my mates suggested the beef dishes were particularly delicious). When we thought we couldn't fit in any more desserts were brought out (almost like tasty cold churros- yum!) to top off the night. We never enquired about cost when we agreed to the banquet, however it easily cost under $20 per person (i think it was $15 per head), and that included BYO wine. We were all impressed and will certainly be going back , so don't over look or underestimate this little gem of a place! (oh and ask for their chilli dipping sauce- got some kick to it, but i took some away in a take away tub, and have been cooking with it in absolutely everything. It's the perfect addition to any recipe that needs a bit of hot to it).

GREAT MEAL. I went to Nubia Cafe with my family last night and even though the menu was different but still the food tasted about the same. It still has the african flavour and I really enjoyed the falfel dish. I shared a meat dish and the deep fried chicken with my parents and they were great. We had the african traditional coffee afterwards and the staff were so friendly that they offered us some sweets for free and explained to us how the coffee is made and how they have it in Africa. We really felt we were in a home not in a restaurant!
My family and I had a great meal.

Brilliant!!. The location and décor made me quite sceptical at the beginning, but as soon as we entered the staff were extremely relaxed and friendly - I felt like I was travelling and a local had invited me into their home to share a meal. The menu was easy to read for a westerner and EXTREAMLY well priced. Once the food came out I couldn't have been happier. The portion size, quality, and flavours were sensational… everything was freshly made and had the home feel about it, it was hearty and very filling without that greasy overload. If you're a fan of Malaysian or Indian food, or just looking for something a bit different this place is a definite must. I'll definitely visit again.

My husband and I had a very pleasant lunch today in a very authentic Sudanese cafe. The food was very tasty and value for money. We had the fried lamb and nile perch fish with rice, along with their own coffee and tea. Tea was flavoured with clove, which went so well with the beautiful flavour of the food. The service was excellent, so friendly and welcoming. We also loved the decor of Africa ornaments, pictures, utensils, etc. Highly recommend it.

We were the only guests at 8pm on Saturday so I was a bit worried. The service was welcoming and laid back. The food was delicious! They even agreed to give us the Groupon deal we saw in the app without purchasing the actual Groupon. This place was definitely worth the 20 minute drive and we'll likely return in the future.

Awesome Nubian cuisine and took us back to our time in North Africa. Light and subtle flavours, delicious dishes and impeccable authenticity! We went with a Groupon deal but ended up ordering more on top of the coupon. Recommend the grilled lamb, ful beans, African style falafels. Decor isn’t the most modern but service and food more than make up for it with a fantastic host.
