Review Lentil As Anything Abbotsford - Abbotsford

Veronica Ong
Cozy restaurant in the heart of Abbotsford Convent with a relaxed atmosphere set among greenery. Staff is friendly, efficient and helpful in explaining the pay-as-you-feel model. The vegetarian Indian food is fantastic. My favourite was the coconut chutney that accompanied the dosa. It was spicy but the potato in the dosa balanced it nicely. Will continue to visit.

Delicious and flavourful vegan food. Sadly from what i heard, it was the last day they are operating at my last visit. You'd be lucky to get a chance to eat there. Pay what you like for the food, but a generous donation is good.

We had our wedding at Lentil and all I can say is I couldn't ask for more... The staff went out of their way to spruce up the place and serve our guests. The music was good. The food was great! Our guests loved it. Some even said that they never thought vegan could be that good. Lol. Special thanks to Carlos and Param for making everything go smoothly. Love you guys. Won't hesitate to recommend to my friends.

Lentil As Anything is a company which endeavours to provide a set menu each day of the week and allow customers to pay what they are able to or what they believe it’s worth. You can also pay for your meal by volunteering for them. Roles available include waiting, cleaning and dishwashing. The menu is vegan and provides various healthy, flavoursome options from various cultures. There are even performances at the restaurant sometimes! Lentil As Anything in Abbotsford is conveniently located within the Abbotsford Convent and near the Collingwood Children’s Farm and therefore surrounded by historical buildings. The staff and volunteers are extremely friendly from what I have seen and I would recommend Lentil As Anything for those you like flavoursome vegan dishes.

We have ordered a cake and babiccino at 2h17. Was charged $15. Never got our babiccino. First we waited for 10 min, then asked cashier. She went to ask barista about it. We wanted another 20 min. There were no rush, barista had time to talk to his pal, to go to bathroom, to serve a couple next to us. We did not get any explanation, and no coffee. Strange and annoying. Went to a place next door got coffee, babiccino and cake in 5 min.

Located in an abbey/convent. Went here on a friend's recommendation. Lunch buffet had 2 types of salad, curry and tofu bake. Desert banana cake in plum syrup. I personally loved the food selection and had 2 full plates. Pay is by donation (suggested $15). Will definitely be back
I like to move it!
This place has everything you need to spend a nice weekend there. Horses and ponies, pheasants, country side tracks, river side tracks, bushes and trees everywhere, it literally feels like you're in a remote country. And the restaurant has some really tasty food! Vegan options available, we tried rotti kutthu (Sri lankan food) and it was yummy! You can eat for free if you can't pay, it's up to you, you can just donate and leave. Highly recommend for dates, families and friend gatherings, specially dates would be romantic!

This is a restaurant everyone must come to at some point in their life. Extremely tasty food served by volunteers in an amazing venue within the covenant. The lunch buffet is an absolute must; healthy salads pastas and curries with something special always cooking outside. Live music on the occassion and the large number of patrons that pass through add amazing atmosphere to the location :)

Lentil was always high on my list for catering. I love their food and I love what they do, but my only real experience with them had been from their Abbotsford location which is a bit more casual and buffet style and sometimes reminds me of a college mess hall. Trusting them with our wedding took a small leap of faith but it was the best leap of faith we could have taken. We were placed in the very capable hands of Ken and chef PK. Ken was such a delight to chat with on the phone we practically invited him to the wedding as a guest. We can be some pretty particular diners and our catering requests were many. Our menu had to cater for several different tastes, and types of people while still being entirely vegan, and gluten free. As a diabetic I also had some other requests to help me manage the glycemic index of the meal and they were so accommodating. They sent us a sample menu to look over with multiple options for each category. And then once I made my selections they were able to make minor adjustments as the day approached based on seasonality of ingredients. I should also mention that they were able to do all this for a budget that was small by wedding standards. On the day of the wedding they did get a bit lost getting to the venue (it was in a super remote place). But once there they got straight to work and dinner arrived right on time, and was constantly well looked after by their staff so that it was always hot and fresh and full. And it was DELICIOUS!!! All of our non-vegan extended family had to be reminded that what they were eating was vegan because they were too busy loading up their plates with seconds. Also, even though everything we discussed ended up at the wedding there was so much more. Extra little dishes, condiments, additions, and surprises made the presentation look so much richer and more special than anything I had ever seen at their restaurants. Make no mistake, if you need to cater an absolutely gourmet feast, Lentil is more than up to the task. I could not recommend them more highly!

Spent my time as a 'volunteer' down from late December 2016 towards the end January 2017 and although the shift I did was hardwork (8 hours of chopping vegetables non stop!), I did pick it because it was all I could do at the time..At times LAA dedication was frustrating (because I had to do shifts on holidays) but at the same time admirable though. These are good folk that do care, although I felt I never could really fit in (probably due to me being a loner!), they did their best to keep me welcome though. Although I will never go full vegan, it has opened my eyes to the constant pursuit of good health and the food is great though. Although I have constant mixed thoughts on what I think of the place, I will say that the Abobotsford franchise is probably the best in existence due to it's peaceful location. I'm unlikely to return due it not being my scene and that it's kinda far for me to get too (may do St.Kilda someday as I virtually live right next to it!) but as a franchise, it's the very best version of this franchise and if you can get down there easily, then go for it!!! However as mentioned by another reviewer, it is run by volunteers and Work For The Dole participants who are coerced into it or run the risk of losing their benefits if they do not participate in it. The chance to score a 'real job' like other professions using this scheme is very hard to archeive because of the limitless volunteers, there is no reason for them to legitly hire anybody. Once 6 months is gone, then you are are memory with someone else to take your place, however they are only too happy to keep you if they don't have to pay you and you do it out of your own free time etc. I knew one guy that came close to securing a 'casual' position but he turned it down due to other commitments. Great restaurant, decent good good food but enjoy your stay as it won't last last long though and before you know, you'll be back at square one with an employment officer ramming tirade down your back!!! Know the truth etc.

It's a place where atmosphere and tasty food come together and create a gastronomic symphony of epic proportions. Go down any day or night and a group of red clad volunteers will try their hardest to provide grand service and a fantastic meal. I'd recommend this place to anyone who wants good food great atmosphere.

Absolutely AMAZING food! Just do the place justice and pay decent if you can - this place is doing incredible things and don't need ppl skipping/skimping out after enjoying such a delish meal like that. <3

Best place on Earth! Food is Amazing, people are pure souls, place itself is a paradise. Big community and family. I truly miss the time spent there!

Good Sri Lankan vegetarian food. It is always a pleasure to eat at place where they offer only vegetarian food. So there is no weird taste of meat food on you meal. Place is idyllic. Staff is great and polite and full of sense of humor. Mostly they are voluntary workers. Cashew Curry with rice and potato fritters. Both were good. I liked more Cashew curry. Place has that special way to charge you. You can basically pay what you feel a like. Sure they have they wish prize list. Worth to visit.

Sri Lankan night is my new favourite thing EVER. The mains were all absolutely incredible . Cake is my favourite food group and tonight's dessert was the best cake I've ever eaten. The two young gentlemen looking after us tonight were so polite, both so sweet. Was lovely to have Paola come over and introduce herself and have a chat too. The convent isn't on my side of town so I don't visit too often but it's always a joy when I do! Lotsa love

Delicious food & love their motto of everyone has a place at the table & that you pay discreetly. Run by awesome volunteers. What a place to be apart of!
Egla Didvalyte
Absolutely amazing place and divine food. Very cosy and warm place. Could be crowded on sunny days.

I finally went to lentil as anything today and was very impressed! The food (and coffee) was delicious, the staff genuinely friendly and the whole concept just a great idea I'd love to support more often. Definitely recommend and coming back :)

I love coming to Lentil as Anything: for the people, the food, the generosity, the “space” to just sit and gather yourself - it is a precious model of community.

Great food, great people and great atmosphere. If I might add, it’s also for a great cause too.

This place never fails to please. The staff and atmosphere are lovely and welcoming to everyone, and the food is always excellent. Lentils does a irreplaceable job fostering equality, kindness, and respect in the community.

Beautiful place, tasty food. One of my favourite places in Melbourne for sure! Not only for the food, but also for the environment and purpose.
Chewie
Maafe african stew, curry plate and vanilla cake. Everything was plated wonderfully, full of flavour and really vibrant atmosphere. This place fills up quick so best to come early.

Try the pancakes if you're getting breakfast. The place is beautiful and the staff is super friendly! They also donate to the bushfires and the staff is volunteers. Didn't even realize my cappucchino was vegan, it was perfect❤️
Vegan McBeef
I love it!! the food is very nice!!! and the atmosphere too!! went there with some friends and we spent some times there too because it’s crowded but we can still hear each other, means the building were crafted well.
Appetiteblogger
I loved the ambiance and the concept of this place, it reeks of positivity! The food is amazing! I had their lasagna, spinach rice, quinoa and rocket leaves’ salad and brownie and everything on the plate was lip smacking
Alfred
As with all the Lentils spots you can't not love it.<br/>This one has the pleasure of hosting you in the striking Abbotsford Convent which in itself is worth a visit just to enjoy the gardens.<br/>True to the usual lentils expectations you'll be sure to enjoy the curry, whatever it may be that day.<br/>Their cakes have also dramatically improved in recent months.<br/>I hit this place on a consistent basis with friends and am rarely disappointed except for when they've already run out of something I was keen for because it already all got snapped up.<br/>Keep it up.<br/>Food where you can legitimately taste the love.

Hands down my favourite place ever!!! I absolutely love the food!!! But I love the concept! The staff are always so happy and helpful!! They will chat to you! Sing along! It’s such a great vibe!! <br/>Any day/night of the week is different! But you can’t go wrong!!!
Leila
Beautiful concept. The food had such a home cooked feel to it, so warm and comforting. I especially loved the little momo stand that was there the day I went, making fresh steamed dumplings right in front of you. Definitely give this place a go, and take a walk around. Such a lovely area!
Sameer
I tried this Masala Dosa with mashed potatoes and vegetable filling garnished with salad. The price of this delicious breakfast meal was in the form of a donation.
Worldinkindness
People is so kind. I went there with no cash, asked to pay the next day, and i was replied yes with no hesitation. I love these people, i love food for being so deliciously cooked with love. Thank you❤️

Best place ever. Best vegetarian dish - totally changed my perception of vegetarian food as I am a meat lover really and I love this place. Great vibe. Different menu each time I came in.
Bites Of Melbourne
I love the concept I really do and I wish my review was better but the food wasn’t to a very high standard at all unfortunately.<br/><br/>I wouldn’t be heading back in a hurry for the food.<br/>

I can’t even count the number of times I have been here but every single time its been nothing short of beautiful flavourful and not to forget very healthy food. <br/><br/>I make it unhealthy by overeating almost every single time. Would eat here every day if I could.

was invited here by my friend a while back, and decide to write something on here. lovely place, food, people. I also love the concept of NFP restaurant, it shows how much of people actually cares for each other in this day and age. would love to come eat at Lentil for my next visit to Melbourne!
LittleM
I loved the idea of a NFP restaurant being inside the Abbotsford Convent. The place is run by volunteers and there's no price on the vegetarian dishes, so it's up to the customers to pay what they feel like. It is very packed on the Sunday arvo, and we had to find our own seats. The blackboard near the front shows the menu. I'm not a vegetarian, but I found the food tasty. I would recommend stopping here for a meal if you're visiting Abbotsford!
Onara
Nirvana, man! The buffet operation isn’t currently happening, as renovations take place. So, the ordering process is chaotic and the crowds are still coming. Simple vegan plates are on offer for a suggested donation of $12. The food is OK. The crowd is cheerfully crusty

I was invited to a gig at Lentil As Anything by a friend on Saturday night. I didn’t know what to expect as I wasn’t there for the food but was totally blown away by their concept. It was a vegetarian buffet dinner night and the food was so delicious and wholesome! I’m also surprised the staff there are mostly volunteer and there is no price to the menu. You pay by what you think it’s worth. Highly recommend Lentil As Anything !

**3.5 stars** My friends and I had breakfast at this non-for-profit vegetarian restaurant a few weeks ago. Run by volunteers, it’s not hard to miss this place which is situated inside the Abbotsford Convent with both indoor and outdoor seating. I love the concept that you can name the price you feel the food is worth. My friends and I were also lucky enough to have eaten whilst there was a live band playing - that made for a nice experience. Overall, the vibe inside was great - hip and lively. The food was good (considering they’re vegetarian and vegan dishes). The staff and service were friendly and prompt.

Absolutely Amazing - do not have a bad word to say about Lentil As Anything in Abbotsford Convent.<br/><br/>This was my first time here and naturally, because it was buffet style dining, I tried everything. There was a carrot and ginger soup, vegetable stew, rice pilaf, chickpea and coconut salad, pasta with tomatoes and olives, date cake with a chocolate sauce, and a chocolate pudding/cake with chocolate sauce. There was also a man making fresh roti with a coconut mint chutney and a onion and mushroom jam.<br/><br/>All the foods were of a high quality and had a "homestyle/homecook" feel. My favourite was definitely the chickpea salad with coconut; it also had cabbage and other greens in it. Just very fresh, filling, and tasty without having an overwhelming coconut flavour. I also loved the soup which had an extremely strong ginger flavour. When we were about about to leave, they brought out another tomato and mushroom soup which was also delish.<br/><br/>The roti was an absolute highlight. Very flakey and hot, but wasn't too greasy and didn't have that oily flavour that some have. The texture was just perfect (not too thin and more on the thicker side). But the chutney and jam that accompanied it was out of this world. They were so so good and I would have happily gone back for thirds of just those two (I did actually go for seconds).<br/><br/>The staff are such a delight to talk to, and the overall vibe is great. There is a mix of people there, and many of them. The actual place can be a little tricky to find as it is next to another cafe, and be prepared to wait in line - but so worth it.<br/><br/>I will be returning here, and cannot wait to check out the other two locations also. The concept of pay-as-you-feel is brilliant and so wonderful for those truly in need of food. I am even thinking about volunteering here just to do some good in this world and help out a little.<br/><br/>Overall, I highly recommend!!!
Timinmelbourne
I love this concept. Vegan and vegetarian food that’s tasty, healthy and good for you. You pay by donation and the place is ran by volunteers! Perfect. <br/><br/>The concept is that you help yourself to some food/soup from the large trays, today it was a pea and ? soup w nuts and a chick pea dish and a chunky curry vegetable dish, and a cake w chocolate icing which I didn’t try. <br/><br/>The volunteer staff were lovely, and friendly. <br/><br/>All the food was tasty, and at the end of your meal you donate what you think the food was worth and/or what you can afford I guess. <br/><br/>Halfway through my meal a backpacker sat next to me and he had a small bowl of food and I didn’t see him make a donation so I paid for him. Shhh I didn’t tell anyone hahaha<br/><br/>Oh and I went to an ATM to get some cash for today and to my surprise you can pay by card, which is great. This place is definitely worth a visit.
ReemBesher
Love their food and concept. Great atmosphere and you pay as you can/feel in cash or with card. The place is running by friendly volunteers.<br/>Good and tasty vegan options!!

We had Saturday breakfast here and it was surprisingly delicious I say surprisingly because generally I find vegan food is often disappointing and tasteless. We loved watching fresh roti being made and then doubly loved eating it straight from the grill with a delicious vegetable dish topped with coconut chutney.

Lentil As Anything is a not-for-profit vegetarian restaurant with a few locations in Melbourne. Most (if not all) of the waiters are volunteer and they have a "pay-as-you-wish" philosophy when it comes to the bill. If you can't pay for your meal, you can come back and volunteer your time at the restaurant. It's actually a lovely concept and it creates this sense of community that is truly beautiful. The place was packed on a Friday evening and then menu was featuring Indonesian, Indian, & Thai inspired dishes.<br/><br/>Our group of 7 sat inside, however, if you have the chance and patience - I'd wait for a table outside for a more communal, fun experience. We helped ourselves to water and quickly decided we wanted to try most of the evening menu. I will say, the only problem with volunteer-based service is that it can lend itself to be very very slow. Unfortunately, it took about 40min for someone to finally make it over to take our order. We tried so hard to get folks' attention, and I guess because it was so busy we just kept getting forgotten. But hey, we were there for the food, which came out pretty quickly once we placed ordered - so let's get to that!<br/><br/>We started with the gado gado, an Indonesian potato salad. It was pretty good, also could have used a touch of salt. Next we had the sweet potato curry, which was absolutely divine! The flavors literally danced around my mouth and I could have eaten that all night long. Followed up by the chickpea masala (not pictured), which again was delicious and packed a great flavor. We ended with a red rice pudding with a caramel & coconut milk sauce. Honestly, I could have just drank the sauce and gone without the pudding - but perhaps that's a bit too much! It was quite tasty, to say the least.<br/><br/>Overall, definitely recommend a meal here. The menu changes practically every day, so its fun to show up and be surprised. Also, the restaurant itself is really doing an amazing job creating a community and bringing folks together. I truly admire that and they deserve your support!
Miss T.A
Community spirit. A variety of healthy vegetarian food to choose from. Name the price you feel the food is worth and pay for that amount. Expect a long queue . If you’re lucky , entertainment is provided .

I adore this place. I gotta pinch myself sometimes like damm this place really exists? Wholesome vegan food running on the honesty, gratitude and love of the true nature of people? Hell yeah. All the power to this place, I love it so much.
Hithere
I really like the concept. Pay as you feel or can.<br/>I just had a coffee. Espresso had little crema left and taste alright, nothing special.<br/>Table was dirty with sauce.<br/>I paid $2.05 for it and left.

Went here giving it a second chance. Before I went before all my friends were raving on how good this place was.<br/><br/>Unfortunately for me, the first time I went there it wasn’t good at all, but I reckon it all depends on the volunteer staff available at the time. The idea of the place is amazing, pay what you can and this time around, the food was DELICIOUS! <br/><br/>I enjoyed every bit of it! If you’re lucky and momo’s Tibet dumplings are on (outside), get yourself in line and have one or two! Absolutely delicious. <br/><br/>The abbotsford convent is beautiful as well! <br/><br/>I was cycling the capital city trail and this was a perfect stop to fuel up and continue our way. <br/>A must go if you’re in Melbourne! 👌🏽

I have said this before and I will say this again- I would eat at Lentils every day of my life if I could!<br/><br/>It is not JUST that they are a Nonprofit run by Volunteers, or that they have the best Srilankan dosa in Melbourne, or that the restaurant is located inside absolutely stunning convent grounds, or that they have live music during weekend breakfasts, OR that it is a pay as you feel setup....it's also that they genuinely have excellent food and an equally excellent service.<br/><br/>This review is only about their breakfast which I love, and will update about their lunch and dinner as well.<br/><br/>Food: Sri Lankan Dosa for breakfast - It's beautiful to look at, with it pickled pink onions, maroon coconut chutney, and earthy rice pancake (dosa). Inside the crepe are generous servings of spiced, cooked potatoes, just like one's mother would make.<br/><br/>Cinnamon Lime Pancakes - light and fluffy, slightly sweet, a good addition to your weekly to-try pancake list. It's a big one for me because I hate lime flavour but this one absolutely hit the spot for me.<br/><br/>Mexican Mushroom and Beans with Potatoes- self explanatory food description, the potatoes are perfectly cooked and you won't go hungry after this huge serving.<br/><br/>Coffee- Pictured are two flat whites, one mocha and one long black. Made to order perfectly and served with a smile. Can't get any better!<br/><br/>After food, we generally walk around the park and soak in the calmness of the grounds. Must enjoy!🎉🎉🎉🌈
GoMelbS
A must try place! Great concept and good healthy food. The buffet has a number of dishes and you can pay for how much you feel you have eaten.
Vivian
What a wonderful not for profit vegetarian restaurant that is based on a philosophy where diners are to pay what they think the meal is worth as per their own financial capability <br/>The food was delicious really cooked from the soul
Amysyder
I absolutely love this place and the concept (not-for-profit/ run by volunteers)! The staff here are super friendly and the food was delicious! It was a very welcoming environment. The view from the restaurant and the way it was decorated was lovely, made me feel like I was back in the English country side. Me and two friends order three different meals and shared each one. The portion sizes were filling and different food is served everyday so there is plenty of variety throughout the week! <br/>Update: loved it so much I decided to come back and tackle the brunch menu. I order the lime and cinnamon sugar pancakes topped with cashew cheese and a chai hot chocolate. I have to say I was apprehensive about having cashew cheese on my pancakes, but it really complemented the lime syrup! The pancakes were super fluffy and moist, although the hot chocolate was luke warm at best when it arrived at the table. Can’t fault how quickly our order came out though, which was good considering I was starving. I would definitely recommend the breakfast here also!

Love the concept but hated the dining experience. Despite it being smack in the middle of lunchtime on a weekend, we got served cold leftovers from the bain marie. It just didn't do the potentially delicious food any justice. I'm sure it can be chalked up as being understaffed during peak period.

My to-go place if I happen to be in this area! loving the concept of the eatery - bohemian style; pay-as-much-as-you-want; vegetarian/vegan option; community-based; not-for-profit. The food they serve is amazing too! Yes, I don't really use the word amazing but I just have to! <br/><br/>Drinks at Lentil as Anything are all brewed with soy, so yeap, that's right, no milk, but yumz soy! It is also notable that they serve breakfast (their own brunch menu) and dinner (ala carte menu). With different cuisine being served daily, (for lunch - buffet style) - you can check out their website if you want to know what cuisine they are serving on the day you plan to go! (Website link: https://lentilasanything.com/menus/)

visited back in 2012 and was impressed and inspired by their "pay what you want" model and their cause to support migrant community. Plus the food was delicious as well as the ambiance!
Kim
Love the mains here. Second time I've been here and it's all delicious. However both times I've been the desserts are not good. Last time I had the little donut balls that were burned, this time I had cake that was bland and undercooked.
Nean
extremely tasty food, with an awesome concept.  Help others.  The food was really tasty - Friday lunch buffet.  Mushroom noodles were really good, as was the sweet potato green curry. And the staff were lovely.
Angel Khong
Delicious flavourful vegan meals served in a buffet/all-you-can-eat/pay-what-you-want style. Loved the concept of this place (non-profit, run by volunteers) although it was always expectedly busy and squishy inside. I also liked how they always provided complete set of meals here; entree, main, side, desserts. Recommended.

Found on the grounds of the Abbotsford Convent, Lentil as Anything felt almost like a place somewhere in Europe. It’s a nice place for a lazy relaxing day with friends and family over a delicious vegan meal for a worthy concept and cause. Boundaries are broken as people come together, connect and bond together over a meal. The volunteers who serve are so warm and friendly and attentive and such a lovely face to Lentil as Anything. It’s a very popular place, so make sure you book.

Finally I got to check this place out. Read so much about it but never had the time or my friends refuse to check it out with me. Oh well...it's their loss! <br/><br/>Love the setup and pay what you want method. They have a list of suggested price and what it covers. It's refreshing. The location itself gives a calming effect. The staff (volunteers) are more attentive that a lot of existing eateries. <br/><br/>The food, served buffet styled. You get a selection on 5-6 choices of vegetarian dishes. The thought of "vegetables only" gives me a little ...:(. But was I so wrong! I love the flavours (Moroccan Tangines) and the variety! And the dessert was simple but delicious. Coffee was spot on too! I can't wait to check out the other outlets too! Well done to the person who started this set up!

Established in 2000, Lentils as anything provides an exceptional and extraordinary dining experience. It is located in Abbotsford Convent; a scenic place with historic buildings and galleries. Once you got there, you will be greeted by their friendly staffs. You can see all kinds of people from different ethnicity and backgrounds casually hanging around and having conversations with one another. Lentils as anything believe that everyone deserves a place at the table - no matter what their cultures, backgrounds, and finances are.<br/><br/>One thing that wowed me away is the place is a non-profit and most of the staffs are young and passionate volunteers who are willing to contribute their energy and time to build this society. There is no set price for the dishes and there is a contribution box that you can fill to continue the support for Lentil as anything.<br/><br/>Panda 🐼🐼🐼:<br/>Amazing concept for the place<br/><br/>Tasty vegan dishes - we got the brownies, satay noodle salad, and shepherd's pie<br/><br/>Generous portion<br/><br/>Friendly atmosphere<br/><br/>Wonderful outdoor and indoor seatings<br/><br/>Friendly staffs<br/><br/>For services, there is a room for improvement, but I am personally satisfied with the whole experience that we had. Will definitely go back again and again :)

It's Inspiring to know, and more humbling to experience something this beautiful in a world that lacks faith, trust and honesty.  <br/><br/>This 'only vegetarian buffet' indoor and outdoor cafe (housed in a convent) runs on charity, and patrons are supposed to pay only if they want to....without being forced to. And yes, you see people from all strata of society enjoying meals and music (without being discriminated). <br/><br/>Just next to the Yarra Trail Park in Abbotford, this cafe, without compromising on the quality and taste of food (and dessert...the sticky date pudding was FANTASTIC), serves unlimited food to the patrons. Even the hot / cold beverages served are better than those served by commercially successful cafes. Service too, is impeccable. <br/><br/>What adds to the total charm is the artists who volunteer to entertain patrons with live performances.   <br/><br/>It seems, thanks to the society who feels responsible to do something for the society, this cafe is doing very good with the help pouring-in from volunteers and from those who feel  happy to be a part of this establishment by helping financially. <br/><br/> A Must.

Extremely crowded on a Sunday lunch. Although the line was out the door, it didn't take long to get to the front, to serve up your own plate of sri-lanken inspired curries with veg semolina & biryani as a base. Dahl was fantastic. The salad was a bit too drenched in dressing. Great sticky date pudding for dessert. Sunday's are also great for the best Tibetan momos ever - all handmade by a lovely, friendly man. Looking forward to coming back again (esp for breakfast!). I feel like the standard here has lifted & so good to support the local community building..

If there is only one restaurant you visit in Melbourne, it must be Lentil as Anything in Abbotsford. Amazing vibe, great people and service plus generous serving sizes and a varied menu. This is a beautiful place to be.

Great vibe with radiohead music galore, extremely tasty food which was fresh and made with love.<br/><br/>Delicious soy milk coffee, made quickly and well.<br/><br/>All food available on the day I went was vegan so A+++ there. <br/><br/>My only flaw was the lack of friendliness from the staff. They weren't terrible, but e.g. when I was finished and leaving I attempted to say thank you to 3 different staff members who all ignored me :/<br/>

Nice green machine like if kane became a spinach eating monster. Very nice food. So i guess i need 60 more characters to complete a post. 2 more
Veggin&#039; Around
Generally the first thing that someone will ask me if they find out I’m vegan is “do you eat at Lentil Is Anything?” Closely followed by “do you eat at Veggie Bar?” (Which I haven’t, but I will eventually!) Anyway, I think what they’re doing here is amazing and that can’t be understated. I love the concept of the paying method, and the work they do for the community is outstanding. And sure, considering all of that you might expect the food would suffer. But what they do, they do well. I’ve only been a couple of times and one time was a dhal and I honestly can’t remember the other time, but both were full of flavour and good-sized meals. To have the dessert menu is a plus as well. Obviously this isn’t the type of place to go if you are looking for a fine dining experience, and the wait to get in can be long, but the service is friendly, the food is great, and it is a fantastic concept helping the local community.

A fair walk after entering the convent with no obvious signs for lentil as anything, follow the path straight ahead until you reach a sight for sore eyes. <br/><br/>Ordered: <br/>💬Shepherd's Pie (vegan): Shepherd's pie with slow cooked lentils and soy mince, topped with creamy mashed potatoes and raw sauerkraut.  <br/><br/>Review: <br/>💭A unique system where you pay as much as you want! <br/>A non profit vegetarian/vegan restaurant that served me decent hearty food. <br/>The lentil based meal made me surprisingly very full.<br/>Design inside was eclectic and although service and etiquette wasn't obvious (they took orders from our table and cleared our plates when we saw other people clearing their own plates), knowing that the money is going towards a good cause was enough motivation for us to go and support the cause.

Really nice place and nice peoples here.<br/>Amazing idea, when i feel upset I would to came here, have delicious foods and drink, gonna to make my day.<br/> i do love it, should come back soon!

I love lentils with all my heart. Their philosophy, food, events and overall vibe make me come back again and again. The curries are my favourite even though they change every week, they're always yum. Go and support this amazing organisation! And if you can give them a little extra so that you're helping someone who can't afford a meal at all.

Loved Lentil As Anything and its concept. I didn't know what to expect of the food, but it was surprisingly fantastic. Lovely indoor and outdoor area, and great vibes inside. There was a band playing with created a great atmosphere. Friendly staff and people around too. I will definitely have to come back.
Levi Fedley
Fantastic atmosphere, very friendly staff, and don't lower your expectations on account of the 'pay-as-you-feel' setup. This place is a must visit, tucked away in an old convent with a nearvy bakery & often live music & other events surrounding. Check this place out and support their great cause, places like this is what makes Melbourne so special.

Lentil As Anything, Food Without Borders<br/><br/>"...people with no money can learn, work, eat, socialise and have fun in our restaurant without compromising their integrity or dignity."<br/><br/>Visited one of the chain in Abbotsford, its located inside a complex, so you have to look closely to find this place. Looked just like a hippies hang out place on the outside, on the inside you'll find the place very relaxing and cozy.<br/><br/>I went here with my sisters because Lentil is one of the recommended place to visit while in Melb due to its concept.<br/>The Abbotsford complex (please do forgive me if the complex's name is wrong) feels like a religious place as there's a church inside and the ambiance is calm and comforting.<br/>Lentil is located not far from the front gate so you dont need to ask around.<br/>What you saw at first would be the terrace area and there's a door on the right side that connects to a medium hall where you could get your food there.<br/>I came at a lunch time, so the food concept is buffet. The variation of food are not that many and all are vegan food.<br/><br/>Thought at first, we came for the ambiance and pay as you feel concept. But, when we arrived and looked at the menu with philosophy words in it, i fell in love.<br/>Yes, I fell in love with the philosophy, not in words, but because i've seen it with my own eyes, there was a homeless man who sit side by side with people and eat and converse with them just like they are friends.<br/><br/>I didnt expect a lot of the food quality, because the cooks are volunteer and i came because of its concept.<br/>But, the food was super good ! The menu was a vegetables covered in curry sauce and briyani rice, for the dessert they served a rice cake with cinnamon sauce.<br/>It was so good, that I got another portion of dessert.<br/>They also served coffee and tea, not the basic ones, but the one with chai tea, or latte version.<br/><br/>After you eat, as the staffs are volunteer, you're expected to clean up your food on the selected place. <br/>In the hall and near the clean up place, there's a box with price list. Start from $5 and under until $50. You could choose which one is suited for you, whether you only have little money, could only pay for your food and drinks, or better you could pay for your food and even more to contribute.<br/><br/>All of the staffs are volunteer and i think they recruit the friendly ones, as they were very helpful and wanted to initiate the conversation :)<br/><br/>I was in Melb for a week and visited a couple restaurants and cafes, but Lentil was the best one.<br/>Would love to go back to Melb again just to visit another chains of Lentil.<br/>It would be best if another country do the same, not just in words or visions, but in real, creating a place where people could eat without thinking of their finance or background situation.<br/>Conversing with people of different "home", career, nations or other backgrounds.<br/><br/>I think the best closing for this review should be one of the FundaLentil's...<br/><br/>"Everyone deserves a place at the table as long as they show respect."<br/><br/>NOTE : For muslims, you totally could eat at this place without doubting every menu whether this is halal or not, as this place serves all vegan menu :). Another reason to come back, yeay !

I love the idea behind this place and the amazing commitment from volunteers. The curry and satay salad were delish and the hot chocolate and cinnamon tea was amazing. I love that this place is all vegan too! Keep up the great work!

My friend introduced me to this place and I am absolutely loving it. This is the first restaurant I have come across in Melbourne that lets you pay whatever you feel like for the food. Good food and a lovely atmosphere. There is a live band playing some soulful music. You also get to meet some nice people. The quality of food is really good and I just loved it. Will be coming back again.
Hungry Jeweller
Excellent vegan food in amazing surroundings at the heart of abbotsford. Food is mainly Indian inspired. Communal style dining and payment is via a donation.<br/><br/>Verdict: Brazilian emerald

Nice place i love the atmosphere. Food was really nice. Had the sheperd pie and indian curry and it was really tasty. Love the idea of sharing tables and meet new people

Especially amazing for the live music as this place supports local talent . The chai tea stand also encapsulates the community vibe . Beautiful people
Binula
LOVE the concept. Have been here quite a few times now and have never disliked the food. The recent standardised menus and staff taking orders has somewhat made some order out of previous chaos which was a nice surprise. <br/><br/>I'm a big fan of the decor, the outdoor seating and the outdoor hot drinks stand. A must have experience for any Melbournian!
Robert Koh
This place is way better than a lot of paid restaurants. The food is delicious and looks amazing. Volunteer staff are so nice. Please donate to them generously, they deserve it.

Absolutely divine! I love lentil as anything and if you haven't been here before you must go! So the concept is that you pick a plate or two from the menu, order a hot drink outside (in the evening), consume your delicious choices then decide on how much you want to pay. My partner and I came here for dinner and found the place buzzing! We sat inside (although outside would've been fine with overhead heaters) and enjoyed live music whilst we enjoyed our selections. I ordered the curry of the day - a delicious vegetable curry served with tomato pilaf and pappadum. We finished off the meal with a slice of banana cake with coconut syrup but were too lazy to order a hot drink from outside. Total mistake as when we walked past on our way out the dirty chai they were serving smelt so good! Lentil has a rather delightful array of people from all walks of life including fantastic volunteer servers. I absolutely loved the experience and will return time and time again.

Pay as you can afford, the best place and concept! Happy to pay a bit more for people who can't pay. Food is delicious, beautiful convent with interesting exhibitions! The original in st Kilda is super small and cozy :)
Erin
Amazing food, great atmosphere and beautiful location! Love love love this place. Will definitely be back. You can pay whatever you think it's worth also which is great for people who are struggling to make ends meet.
Suf
Delicious veggie/ vegan food, great staff. Didn't know whether to be seated at first, but was quickly told to grab any seat. Great concept and the tumeric tea and vegan desert were great additions to the Sri Lankan main. We had 4 mains between 3 of us as the portions were quite small. You can decide what you pay and there is no one there to actually take payment, you either drop the cash in a box or use the card machine yourself. Will go again for sure.
Teresa.active.foodie
Great vibe, great food, great concept. Run by volunteers with people from all walks of life who come here. The self-serve, buffet-style trust system they have set up is something you don't see very often but it seems to work well. I was happy to pay a little more to support the crew and was totally worth it for the quality of food on offer. Live music and vegan friendly... what's not to love?? 😍
Emma Rose Butler
I am TOTALLY IN LOVE with this place. The food is amazing, the staff are great, the atmosphere is bar none and the heart of this place is beautiful. Never have I experienced such a warm and satisfying feeling as sitting amongst a group of strangers, eating a massive plate of incredible vegan food, knowing that I was a part of such a great and inspirational movement like lentils. If you're in the area - or even if you aren't - you should come to lentil as anything. You won't regret it.
CJ W
The cozy restaurant with delicious food. Nice and energetic staff with warm service. Thank you for this wonderful place. It's worth being there many times. :) :)
Charis The Vegetarian
The food here is great, atmosphere amazing, staff are super friendly and all for a good cause. They often have live music playing in the evenings which is great and it's lovely to sit outside in summer and enjoy the convent.

I used to love coming here a few years ago but it's not the same anymore.  <br/>A few years ago, there was always a beautiful buffet of different curries and dishes to try. You just rocked up, queued and took your turn to take a plate and help yourself to whatever you wanted to try. There used to be free bread donated from the local bakery that was delicious and also, you could go up for seconds if you wanted more. The vibe was also amazing atmosphere of random live musicians so that you enjoyed the loud conversations over dinner, the poetry that was spontaneously given to you, a random opera singer would break into song. It was incredibly packed and busy, but so full of great positive energy that everyone got their turn and fair share of the food and a seat. Sometimes, you would get specials like steamed dumplings on the weekend where you'd just queue up and wait patiently whilst having interesting conversations with other diners.<br/><br/>But now, it feels like a school canteen, where you had to be seated first, order only ONE meal from the menu (we miss the fact you could try and sample everything in the buffet years ago), and there was no real way of asking for more/seconds or a larger/smaller portion. This had discouraged much of the poorer but quirky clientele who were often struggling artists or just unemployed bohemians who actually contributed to the soul of Lentil's at Abbotsford. There are of course, still very lovely interesting people eating here. <br/><br/>I ordered the Special which was roasted vegetables but it was under-cooked, hard vegetables that was under-seasoned. My friend had the curry which was very nice though. I expected a bit more for the $10-$20 they expect from everyone to cover a meal. We didn't even have dessert because we a) didn't enjoy the atmosphere which now felt stale and restricted and b) our mains didn't give us the mouthwatering selection of different dishes like it had previously. It would be better if they had given you a choice to select 3 dishes that they'd give smaller portions of. They spent so much time on making the food look good, they skimped on the actual quality of the taste. <br/><br/>Although I understand how some people may take advantage of the old system, the whole idea was that it was for the community and those who couldn't afford much, would offer what they could. I actually liked the idea that some paid and the minority who couldn't pay, could get fed and feel part of a loving community through volunteering. If the waste was a problem from people not finishing what they took from the buffet, then use a Thali style like lots of vegetarian buffets and have a dedicated server at the counter, spooning a portion for your behalf. Let people have a selection of beautiful curries/stews/dishes to choose from like before. Let people go up for seconds without guilt like before. We don't care about fancy looking plates of food with a cup moulded rice and a balanced poppadom with our curries, we love slop and generosity.  <br/><br/>I was deeply disappointed with the change. It's not the same vibe and I will not be coming back. Since they are going for a more cleaner, a la carte style dining experience, there are undoubtedly better restaurants who offer more generosity in their portions and service for $10 all over Melbourne. It's no longer oozing the idea of supporting those in the community with generosity and trust. It's just not Lentil's anymore.
Indi Farquharson
Delicious, filling, looks as good as it tastes, want to come back for every meal ever. Staff are friendly, decor is nice and the buffet setup is great. Good selection of different foods. Love how most of it is vegan friendly too.
We Nomz
Took my vegan-loving friend here for a weekend lunch and she absolutely loved it! The place was packed and buzzing, the coolest live music and great interior art painting on the wall! We had the self served lunch buffet, great selections of food. There was vegetable Thai green curry, mushroom cabbage soy noodles, roasted pumpkin & chickpea salad and chocolate brownie cake. For a place that offers a pay-what-you-can-afford, the food is unpretentious and good. Would come back to try their breakfast menu.
K-eats
The ultimate 'feel good' vegetarian restaurant in Melbourne. Not only does this place give positive vibes, the food (especially lunch) is always amazing and I suppose it must have been cooked with lots of love! Another amazing thing about Lentils is that not only is the food excellent, I find their coffee to be one of the best in Melbourne! For a very pleasant weekend outing with friends or family, time your visit to Lentils when they have the Saturday Farmer's markets at the Collingwood Children's Farm.

Its not the latest decor, however the food is excellent. As a vegetarian, this place offers excellent value and a lovely ambience. Will definitely come again.
Theresa Arika
The food here is absolutely outstanding! This place holds a story where people from all backgrounds gather like a family. This place has a unique sense of pricing where you pay how much you can or afford. <br/><br/>In the morning, there's a set menu where you can order and during lunch is a buffet with new choice menus everyday. The floor staffs are usually volunteers (I was a volunteer) and are very friendly. The atmosphere and scenery compliments the dining experience. Highly recommend the potato salad if they do serve it at the buffet.

Oh my god, this food is seriously to die for! This was hands down the best vegan food I have ever had, and very up there for my favourite food in general. My friends and I arrived a few minutes before closing due to hugely underestimating the time it would take to bike from Brunswick (whoops) but they were more than happy to still take our orders. I would say the portion sizes are on the smaller side which I imagine is a very smart tactic to reduce waste, so if you're quite hungry I'd order more than one dish per person (we had four between three of us and could probably have done with one more). Stand out was definitely the lasagne and the grain salad, and I can't wait to go back at lunch to try the buffet. Amazing food, amazing concept, a must visit.<br/><br/>Update: tried the buffet, its even better than dinner if that's possible. I would give them a 6 if I could.
KEELYBLACK
Not only is the food always always always so incredibly tasty, but the heart and soul of this establishment is unlike any other you'll come across. Be sure to be generous when paying for your meal if you can afford more. Pay it forward to those in hard times. I remember coming here in uni when I was struggling. Now I can afford more I pay more.
The Frugal Cats
Great place with an amazing concept, run by wonderful people! We were really impressed by the quality of the food. By far, the most delicious vegetarian food we've had in a very long time. We had one of the chef's special, which was a pumpkin curry served in a coconut gravy with rice and pappadum. We also had the Sri Lankan uttapam that was served with sambal and a tasty coconut chutney. The third item we tried was the roasted capsicum stuffed with brown rice, served with a side of pesto lentils salad. For desert we tried the Nepalese halwa (it was so good that we had to order a second serve)! It was really heart warming to see such an unpretentious restaurant where everyone is welcome. Highly recommend this place and we will definitely be back :3
This Diner Is Anonymous
This place is absolutely fantastic, and a wonderful example of the "pay it forward" movement. I love that anyone can come and dine here, and pay whatever it is they can afford. I saw people paying $20 for a meal, which means someone less able to pay can enjoy a meal for a lesser price. The food on the whole was generally excellent. Flavoursome, creative and healthy. The desserts were a little hit and miss - the banana one especially wasn't amazing - but on the whole it's a lovely experience. Love, love, love this place. Absolutely recommended.
Chasingawesomeness
Enough has been said about the cause and how it works! I am still trying to understand the economics behind this chain - how they are able to sustain and serve such outstanding food!<br/><br/>Loved the convent setting which just adds to the feeling of warmth when you visit this place. Salads were fresh and crisp, korma was average, fried rice very delicious, dessert- best of them! We paid 20 bucks per head just because our tummies and heart told us to!
J0yy173
Love this concept of patrons paying what they can afford and what they think the food is worth. The place is staffed by friendly volunteers serving a range of vegetarian dishes in a relaxed atmosphere. The Sri Lankan Dosa was so tasty filled with Masala potato and a spice rich coconut sambal. The mushroom and scrambled tofu was equally delicious, full of flavour from the first to the last bite. Tried a chocolate chai latte for the first time. The chocolate was not very strong so it is essentially still a chai latte but interesting concept.

One of my favorite please in Melbourne. Healthy & tasty food, nice people / staffs, good music and atmosphere, and most importantly great concept - pay as you feel!
Peter
Great place for weekend lunch although line can get long and food is often cold besides that the food is tasty and always have a good variety of dishes to try. We come here regularly and will continue to do so
Full Time Wholesomeness
Lentils as anything is one of its kind. I have been here a few times and every time I was so amazed by its dining experience. I went there for both lunch and dinner, they have a very beautiful and expanded patio all around. During the day time, it is an indulgence to dine outside in the sunshine, during the night, they have it lightened up. There is also great live music playing in the inside of the dining area. The meal comes as a buffet with around six to seven dishes and dessert could be very classic or surprising as the hippies celebrating cultural diversity. They also take orders for coffee and tea. I tried the dirty hippy (hot chocolate with chai drizzled on top), AMAZING. Then comes to the check, it is a hippy vegetarian restaurant, pay as you like. Celebrating food amigos!

My favourite branch of the Lentil as Anything concept is in the very idyllic location of the sunny Abbotsford Convent. This is eating with a social conscience with the idea paying that patrons pay what they feel the food is worth, and the staff all being made up of volunteers. There’s also contributions from the community in all areas.  It’s a most admirable idea and merits the queues that this place gets. I do hope everyone pays their share as there are always some sneaky student-types and straight out bludgers around that could jeopardise it’s continuing operations.
Muester
Well wasn't I pleasantly suprised when I ate here for the first time. I had the breakfast pancake thing (can't remember what it was called) with lentils in it of course. The first mouthful blew me away. So I came back and ordered it again the very next weekend. Bravo guys.

Wow ! This place is one of a kind . The food - Amazing . Great vibes !! Not very spacious though and due to its public service and voluntary payment, it's always busy but the food is consistently great .<br/>A variety of cuisines in a buffet . Live music plays too occasionally . Can't ask for more !
Javier Aznar Peláez
Probably my favourite place here at Melbourne. The food it's really good, normally with Indian flavours. The place it's just incredible, the convent and the surrounds, beautiful spot! And the idea pf Lantils....incredible.<br/>I go almost every week!
Yumyummo
I tried the breakfast dosa and loved it so much that I went back the very next week and ordered it again! Love the ambience and the attitude of the staff. A few more drinks options would be nice though.

Been here 5+ times now and the food has been outstanding every time. Although you'll find many ingredients repeated through the dishes, the range of flavours is always varied. Today we had a Japanese curry with eggplant, Sesame rice, a beetroot/mushroom/sweet potato dish, soup/curry like but with a thicker consistency and some Japanese okonomiyaki. The atmosphere is great there, you never feel out of place and always welcome. Be sure to pay as generously as you can afford to, as it is a "pay as you feel system".
World Eats Food
Meals was tasty, it's good good to walk around the farm and have a look at what's going on, donkey looked a bit sad though, staff/volunteers were really friendly. It was great to see everyone with a smile on their face.

I'm really impressed with the quality of the food at this place. I've been passing the door for the last years and never came here for lunch and I have to say that it's really good.
Sara Rahoo
Love this place so much! Different menus and specials, amazing community vibes. Lifts my spirit every time I come here. There are always events and music in the evenings.<br/>It's a pay by donation, which is great, but I think they need more donations! Their food rivals any meal I've spent $50 on, and I think they deserve as much.
Rita Cauchi
I live close by and I'm vegan and this restaurant is absolutely perfect. The food is nutritious and delicious and I eat here as often as I can. And I'm helping refugees in the process.
Veginspo
Full marks! A place with variety, delicious home style food, lovely staff and with a mission to feed people a good meal and nothing else! The aura this place is magical, the farm and convent are just a bonus. Walked out of this place feeling truly blessed.

Have been here a few times now. It's nice when there is live music.<br/>Sometimes there is buffet and sometimes it's a la carte (but with limited options). I wasn't really convinced with the quality of the buffet, but the last time when we had the a la carte menu the food was really nice. Especially the laksa we had. The chocolate dessert wasn't great though. The service was a bit patchy, but I can imagine it's difficult for them because they work with volunteers. The atmosphere is nice, it's always busy.
Spirited Stardust
These falafels were easily the BEST falafels I have ever eaten. The curry was also great and everything can be great cake as they have an honor pay system. Great ethos and food
Ellie Ann
Favourite place to eat in Melbourne. Food is so so so good and all the staff are so friendly. Better quality and taste than all the other vegetarian places I've tried here. Love the idea too. Can't recommend it enough!
Elfirda Esti
Been coming here for weekend brunches a couple of times. I'm not a vegetarian but their food is simply amazing and tasteful. Not many choices on the breakfast menu, but I absolutely loved the one I've tried (Spanish Patatas, Sri Lankan Dosa, Baked Beans and the Pancake) I also adore the laid-back and non-judgmental atmosphere.
Jules
Lentils as anything is like you're eating dinner at home with the family. A beautiful little community based place located in Abbotsford, with only the best volunteers and company surrounded by you. I have been to lentils so many times I have lost count. Making friends and talking to people is the best part about it, you'll never find anywhere else that puts so much love into what they do. The food just tastes so good and your stomach definitely thanks you for all the great nutrition. If you want a nice big feast head down there on Mondays and Tuesdays for the buffet! Thankyou lentils ❤️
Sriguru Datta
Not impressed with Lentil As Anything at Footscray. The $$ collection, clearly, is not going into the cooking or purchase of ingredients.
Foodie Guy
We came to try out this place just to see whats it all about. This is the first time I have tried a vegetarian meal, overall it was a free buffet, we did give a donation for the meal as i think it was worth it, great taste range and flavour. It was great we tried them all it had fantastic flavour of spices, can't complain, very good for a vegetarian dish.
Chubbylover86
Hard to fault a place that's all about everyone contributing a small share in whatever way to help out the wider community. The communal tables, multicultural dishes and diverse staff add to the feel that tends to draw colourful people to this establishment. While some reviews say the food is at times not on point, most people agree that it comes with an authentic and homely feel as only someone without a qualified background in cooking like your Aunty in her kitchen can pull off an make tasty. The food packs a lot of flavour and makes vegetarian food delicious.
MSY123
This place has had quite a turbulent time lately, I genuinely hope this original Lentils stays here.<br/>The basic ideology of human compassion and love is embodied in this dining hall and this process of creating meals for a undisclosed value.<br/>Each dish is sincerely, cooked up by volunteers and varies upon the time of day.<br/>The paper cranes above the 'waiting room' entrance are a nice distraction, as are the little quotes inscribed by past visitors.<br/>Knowing Lentil's exists, makes me believe humanity has a chance in this crazy world.
Len Tilburga
Our meal was certainly tasty - and no doubt nutritious - but <br/>we both unfortunately experienced typical MSG type reactions i.e. stomach <br/>discomfort/intense thirst/headache/dizziness for 12 -18 hours afterwards. I <br/>sincerely hope they don't use MSG to boost flavours, but it surprises me how <br/>many places (that you would assume wouldn't) actually do. We were also a little <br/>concerned re potential cross-contamination, due to the smorgasbord setup (where many unknown customer hands hover), <br/>physical layout and staff movements (where everyone seems to be doing everything). I doubt whether the place would pass <br/>muster if Dept. of Health workers dropped in. That aside, it has a very nice grunge/bohemian atmosphere and the 'pay-as-you-feel' concept is a good point <br/>of difference. p.s: A long wait for coffees - which were cold.

Lentil's may well be the best place in the world. <br/>I eat here more often than I eat at home!<br/>The vibe is so welcoming and the music is always great. <br/><br/>The food is so wonderful. Lentil As Anything strongly contributed to my not eating meat, it is so easy to make food great without it. <br/><br/>If I'm having a bad day I go to Lentil's it always makes me feel better. <br/>Thank you so much to all the lovely volunteers and all the people who contribute.

I had a great experience at Lentil As Anything. The food was delicious and I love the concept. It can get quite busy but there's plenty of seats and space for a crowd. I was here for the buffet-style lunch option which starts around 12pm but I'd gladly come back to try their regular breakfast menu. This place makes vegetarian food taste absolutely delicious and it's hard not to get too carried away! I like how they have suggested price amounts that explain how the amount you pay is used and what it covers. I didn't get much staff interaction but they all seemed quite chill and relaxed - focused on the task of preparing food and filling up food efficiently.
Keith Lawrence
This is a somewhat hit and miss affair dependent on who's working in the kitchens (a mix of staff and volunteers). Purely vegetarian and produced en masse, this can be a bit of a problem if you're asking for people to pay what they think its worth.<br/><br/>Thing that turns me off is the lack of veg preparation - I don't like having the stringy ends of beans, for example, on my plate. <br/><br/>But on a good day you can get a good mix of spice from around the world with a broad range of tastes. Salads are usually the weak link.

28 Jan 2016<br/><br/>Came to Lentil as anything for the first time today and absolutely loved it. I love the concept of the place, how it's built on trust and is a non-for-profit restaurant that just hopes to provide a meal for people from all walks of life. And there indeed was people from all walks of life there, who all just wanted to enjoy a nutritious meal. The food was delicious and flavorful, I especially enjoyed the vegetarian lasagna, lentil salad and mushroom risotto. Atmosphere was relaxed and decor was nice. Can't wait to come back and try more amazing food!<br/><br/>10 May 2016 <br/><br/>My 4th time at Lentils today, and it was another great experience. Food can be hit and miss - tonight's was delicious, flavorful and full of veg and fiber - pappadams, curry, salads and chow mien were all great. But the best thing about this place is that they are so much more than just a restaurant - it's a warm and welcoming place where you meet all sorts of people, and a place for homeless people to get their feed aswell as volunteer to contribute back to society. It's a place which provides tourists with a unique experience and gives work experience to newly arrived immigrants. The volunteers can be a family for those without family or friends.

Been wanting to come to this place since ages ago but i finally got the chance last sunday. It was an awesome experience. I am not a vegetarian but i found thay the food was super yumm.. When we were there for lunch they served vegetable korma, rice, salad, pasta and a chocolate vegan cake. The decoration of the place was great and also the customers can pay whatever they like depending their satisfactory..

What can I say, Lentils never disappoints. Consistently good vegan/ vegetarian food. You never quite known what you're going to get (buffet style, usually set to a certain theme/cuisine style) but the standard remains the same. Always happy with the great atmosphere and lovely volunteer wait staff. If your lucky, you'll get a live serenade from talented musicians as you tuck into your delicious grub :) Their hot drinks selection is also very refreshing! This lovely joint is truly the heart of the Abbotsford Convent.

I came here for breakfast with two friends a couple of weeks ago. The food was fantastic. I loved every bit of my sri lanka dosa - the flavour was well blended and had a good balance of sourness, sweetness and spicyness. The potatwas pretty well done too, with two poached eggs on top. Would definitely revisit because this place has such great ambience, staff and food. :) I would choose this over those overrated cafe food anyday!
Mark Gregory
Great food and all for a good cause too! The Thai baked potatoes were fantastic. Well done to all involved, a tough ship always running like clockwork.

We came at a busy time Tuesday night with the line up outside getting longer and longer. The wait time actually isn't much more than 5-10 minutes. Staff and volunteers are constantly monitoring the chaffing dishes to watch how low the food is getting. There seems to be a lot of turnover and a variety of dishes offered to suit every diner. By the end of our meal, a volunteer stopped by to ask if we wanted any drinks, which he happily brought to us. It was an interesting experience and great concept that was filled with the community. I'd like to go back to try out their breakfast.<br/><br/>*Update: I came back for their breakfast, which is served a la carte, rather than buffet style. I tried the Sri Lankan farmer's dosa and the Spanish patatas. I really liked the crisp dosa with it's flavorful and well seasoned sauce and filling. I preferred the dosa over the Spanish patatas, although my friend disagreed. For the patatas, the eggs sit on top of layered potatoes with a fresh tasting tomato sauce, similar in style to a Mexican breakfast dish, but with less kick.

My favourite place to eat in the whole world!!! Meals are always fresh and super tasty. The atmosphere makes you feel like you're having a meal at home. Friendly and happy staff. Cost of meal by donation (so amazing, truly). A place where people genuinely care about the public and make sure anyone in need is taken care of with a nice chai and a belly full of yummy food. Good on you guys!!! I will always be back!

When I first tried this place I was def skeptical but found it to be very tasty and a fun experience. The staff was great too. I hope that they stay a staple in Melbs.
Helen
This very popular eating place is very appealing for vegetarians/vegans and healthy eaters from all walks of life. Self service from a variety of tasty dishes including vegetables, rice, quinoa and yummy sauces. There's also tea and coffee. This place is run by volunteers and we signed the petition to keep it open. They rely on customers to pay whatever they want or can afford. Afterwards you can walk around the gardens. I love this place and look forward to visiting again.

I ❤️ LAA! I've taken friends from all over Australia and the world here and every time they (and I) am impressed and pleasantly surprised. The food is generous, and atmosphere warm, friendly and fun. It's a cheap, healthy and tasty deal, for a good cause. Go to bed happy

I love Lentil as Anything. The Abbotsford Convent restaurant has the added bonus of being set in a beautiful surrounding, but the food is the real centrepiece. I visited for breakfast on a Saturday morning and was NOT disappointed! I left full and feeling like I'd gotten good value for money (hard not to when you choose how much you pay!). Eggs and rostis - two of my favourite things on the one plate!

Want some warm, fuzzy feels? Look no further, my friend! <br/><br/>A completely volunteer run initiative that does healthy Sri-Lankan eat-as-you-like and pay-as-you-feel buffet service in a space that is oozing with character. Artworks donated by local artists and tunes playing by local musicians add to the ambience of a stunning venue where there is zero tolerance for discrimination of any kind. I heard Shanaka, the mastermind behind this labour of love, speak at TEDx Melbourne a couple years ago (to a standing ovation from a full house) and the simple truths of his story further enhanced my love for Lentils. I shall keep coming back. Over and over and over and over again.
Vanya Milinović
My new favourite obsession! Lentil is probably the most humble and welcoming place I've been to. All vegan dishes, and so delicious! Donation for the meal, give a lot as it's worth it. $12-$15 covers the cost. Left this place feeling grateful and happy
Tia
Kudos for the great idea of helping and sharing! The atmosphere is amazing, but understanding the cost of preparing food, don't expect a gourmet experience. You can definitely get your tummy full with veggie food, but in my experience the special dinner options that are served is way better than the self serve Buffet. Their weekend breakfast menu looks yummy! Long black was a tad sour, but not too much. Pay as much as you can, which will or won't help cover the costs of your feed.

Love this place...........Great food.......lot of variety. Cool people...... Friendly atmosphere...........best vego place in Melbourne... :)

Amazing place. <br/>I think it is one of the most beautiful places in Melbourne. <br/>So much love and delicious food. <br/>I'm pretty sure everyone loves here

Always a pleasant dining experience here. If all veggie dishes were this good, i wouldnt mind becoming vegetarian at all! Great concept too.

This is a great feel good restaurant which might feel like a student restaurant but is actually well designed and serves up a range of tasty and healthy food. <br/><br/>The menu is inclusive and offers a good range for those with allergies or intolerances. <br/><br/>Breakfast is highly recommended with great dosas on offer. <br/><br/>Pop in and take some time to chat to the friendly staff. You might even be treated by some impromptu music and entertainment. <br/><br/>
Jacopo Pennisi
Great Vegetarian food with available options for Vegans and Gluten Free. One of the only places where everyone is welcome in, even those who can't afford a proper meal in others restaurant. <br/><br/>Yes, the concept behind is brilliant!
Lee Yin Ling
Lovely staff and very friendly crowd, a very unique dining experience. The menu changes often, I had some middle-eastern style curries, vegetable dishes and dessert. I found the donation box beside the entrance gate but it is unlit and so nonedescript that I doubt most people would be able to find it, let alone donate to it. Hope this place keeps afloat.
Rhiannon Beck
Great concept. Dishes on offer change all the time. Self serve style. Good opportunity to try a little of everything. Seating is mainly outside. Friendly staff.
Tanya Michelle
Excellent, friendly service.  Interesting, quirky surroundings - I will definitely come back to this restaurant.  Tasty & healthy vegetarian dishes served.

Will convert hard-core meat-eaters to vegetarians.<br/><br/>Set in an old convent building in a beautiful parkland estate, the food is served as an all-you-can-eat buffet with typically about five mains choices and one dessert. Each day has different food, and the place is run by volunteers who choose to be here so they are all friendly and welcoming.<br/><br/>The food is consistently so tasty that this place settles the argument forever on whether vegetarian, healthy food can also be delicious. The variety means that no two meals will be the same, and I always look forward to visiting.<br/><br/>Everything is free; payment is by donation only. An interesting concept, which means this is one of the few restaurants (perhaps the only?) in Melbourne where millionaires will eat lunch beside folks who are homeless.
ItsTrueFatKidsLoveFood
The food here is consistently very good. When I first started going here, I thought that I wouldn't like vegetarian food too much. However I've since become a big fan and it's now a weekly thing. Thursday nights is a A La Carte. Breakfast on the weekend can be very slow, so make sure you get there quite early, as they don't take any orders after 11.30 and it can sometimes take a while to even order.
Sashimilove
I came here for the first time in YEARS as I used to be a regular when I was in high school. I love the restaurant & everything it stands for & the food is just as delicious as I remember.<br/><br/>The only criticism I have is that it took FOREVER for our waitress to come back & take our order.
N Travv
Great honesty service, perfect for all ages and social backgrounds. The daily variety of dishes is fantastic and the warm welcoming environment is great.

One of the yummiest breakfasts I've ever had. Lovely friendly staff. Beautiful location. Seriously, what more could you want? Anyone writing a bad review of this place would have to be a heartless, tasteless pig.
Vaishnav SR
This restaurant quickly became a benchmark using which I started to rate other places. A heaven for vegetarians and vegans. A must visit for everyone else. The food is tasty and healthy. No extremes in spice or hotness. The staff are polite. The profits are used to help the community. The atmosphere is unique and somewhat eccentric yet inviting. The location is pleasant and it is recommended to go for a nice walk through the nearby Abbotsford farm after a meal. The only downsides are that with so many positives, it has started to become a little crowded at times. But the wait is always worth it. Those using public transport may need to walk a bit as well.
Raditya Fadilla
One of the best restaurant ever. A must visit. Even if you're a hardcore meat eater, you will love this place for not only the food but also the environment.
Pauljasminewedding
Late as Anything. This place was once a brilliant place to eat and hang out. Now you have to wait for 40 mins for a coffee and order food at least 3 times for them to even take notice of you, let lone give you cutlery. Shame.

The Best Vegetarian Restaurant in Melbourne<br/><br/>There is so much to chose from, every day and night something different! The owner is amazing very enlightened genuine lovely person! Nice music there at most times too. Great atmosphere especially if you get a seat outside.<br/><br/>Oh and the Breakfast is soooo nice tooo! but get there before 11am as you cant order breakfast after about 11.15am as they are busy preparing lunch at 12pm!<br/><br/>So Good!!

Lentils As Anything has a few locations around Melbourne, although I have only frequented the Abbotsford Convent location. Breakfast is served a la carte, while lunch and dinner are buffet-style with a rotating menu (except for Thursday and Friday nights). Lines can get impossibly long, but the atmosphere alone is worth it. Food can be a hit or miss, depending on your cuisine preferences and the volunteer chefs of the day. Do check their Facebook for the most current menu and older posts to get a better sense of what the cuisine of the day may be. There is usually a live act, but the most interesting conversations may arouse from your fellow table-mates (part of the seating is cafeteria-style).

Posted on March 14, 2015 by annettejevans Brunch at Lentil as Anything segued into an extended tour for Prince and me around the Convent at Abbotsford. With sweeping grounds, beautiful old trees, several cafes, and buildings with long corridors of office spaces that were formerly nuns’ rooms, Abbotsford is a tranquil haven that seems miles from the madding crowd but is only a 15 minute bus ride from Lygon St. We walked off our brunch by exploring the buildings and the grounds, whiling away several lazy hours. The premise for Lentil as Anything is a benevolent one. You eat, pay what you can afford, and the money helps train and support those who need it the most. It also allows for people on lower incomes to enjoy a wonderful meal without blowing their budgets. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, this place is a constant bustle inside and out, and the kitchen churns out a massive amount of vegetarian food. With plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, you can sit and enjoy the offerings prepared by the staff of (mainly) volunteers, and finish it off with a coffee or choice of chai teas. Breakfast is ordered off the menu, while lunch is buffet style. As we were finishing brunch, people were lining up at the bain maries for lunch. There were noodles, rice dishes, stir fries, various curries and even chocolate pudding. Outside the roti guys were grilling tofu on the bbq. We’d heard that the roti spinning was a performance worth watching, but sadly, we missed out on this. HRH and I hedged on our choices as they all sounded amazing. In the end we decided to share two dishes so we could sample as much as possible. Corn cakes with Tuscan beans and a fried egg was our first dish, and whilst the corn cakes were a teeny bit hard, they were tasty and the beans were rich and tomatoey. We did experience food envy when we saw several plates of the pancakes with caramel sauce and seared apple coming out, but isn’t this often the way?

Again I am sorry for the lack of posts, had exams and am currently in Sydney being kept busy with family, friends and the Easter break. This post is about an outing I had about 2 months ago with some lovely friends, which was very fitting because Lentils As Anything is a lovely initiative and environment. Lentils As Anything is a charity"vegan food organisation with a "pay as you feel" system meaning you can pay nothing at all e.g. homeless people or be generous and support the cause by paying more. I think its a great way to keep the restaurants running as those with little or no income can access wholesome free food while those better off can indirectly subsidise their meals. It's similar to the whole suspended coffee initiative, and with that being said, Lentils As Anything even makes cafe style coffees and they look and taste damn good. There are currently 3 restaurants in Melbourne, Abbotsford being the orignal, and the one I went to. They are also excitedly opening their first Sy
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Today’s menu appeared to be Japanese themed with dishes such as okonomiyaki, Japanese curry, ponzo broth with noodles and miso-glazed sweet potato and eggplant. The food that day was wholesome and healthy-tasting, but not bland.
The Melbourne Local
Not only is Lentils at Abbotsford Convent a lovely initiative to support, it also serves up delicious food in a genuinely beautiful environment. You can eat your meal inside, often serenaded by local musicians, or take your food outside onto the patio. On warm days, you can also sit on the sweeping lawns that look down onto the beautiful gardens surrounding the convent.

Lentil As Anything has been on my Melbourne to-do list for months . Why have I not been until now? Because it's on the other side of town, and it's a bit of a hassle to get there with all the connecting transport system. There are several Lentil As Anything restaurants, but the one I really wanted to go to was the Abbotsford Convent one. If you don't have a bike, it's not that easy to get to, and I don't have a bike. To be honest, it all comes down to ...putting it off. Lentil As Anything was on my list but I was waiting for someone to come along.  But you can't wait forever. I was on the verge of being exhausted of waiting, that I almost put Lentil As Anything aside. No! If no one will go with me, I will just take myself alone. I set a date and off I went. It was a happy day, as any day when you know you are finally getting to do something you've been wanting for so long. Don't you love the feeling you get as you tick that item off the list  Weekends are great because I get to spend t

Normally Lentils is a buffet/all you can eat, and you can help yourself - I read.<br/>Though tonight it's a set menu with options for mains....Cabbage & Onion Pakoras with Nepalese Tomato Sesame Chutney<br/>This was unlike anything I've ever had, it was like deep fried battered cabbage & onion with a lovely homemade tomato chutney (chunky sauce with more than just tomato, water, sugar and vinegar/salt). I like it!

The Collingwood restaurant is located in the Abbotsford Convent and is much larger than footscray..
The World Loves Melbourne
Lentil As Anything speaks of food, culture and community. The website says “Lentil As Anything is a unique not for profit organisation. At our core are the pay as you feel restaurants where customers give what they feel the food is worth and have the opportunity to donate towards the philosophy”.

...delicious vegetarian food offered & a generous, trusting, social spirit encouraged

Every hipster and their fixie opts for a vegetarian diet these days, so I thought I’d share my favourite vegetarian restaurants in Melbourne.

All the food is vegetarian You pay whatever you feel like paying as it is a not for profit place. So today I only paid $5 for some yummy food and some tea. All the food filled me up. I loved the noodles, the salad everything as it was really fresh. The noodles were really tasty

Love the concept + Great Vego food!. Hosted an annual dinner here a few years ago & have been back a few times since. Amazing concept of pay-as-you-feel!

Hello! Flavour?!. Standard food, substandard service and less than acceptable levels of hygeine; tables and chairs were sticky. If you want a variety of foods that all taste the same, watery curry, rubbery pancakes, but want to feel that you're giving back to the community, this is the place. The concept is commendable, there should be more places like this, but food and service lets this place down. I won't be going back again. I'm confused as to why so many people have given good ratings.
The Tastebud
What a find!. Always a queue outside this joint....I have always wondered why. So I ventured in the other day. I didn't like the fact that I had to serve myself as this could mean that unhygienic peoples would have touched the serving utensils prior to me. The food was fabulously tasty and I never in a million years would have thought that I would have demolished the entire meal on my plate- well done.<br/>I hope customers are paying their fair share to keep this joint running as it is fabulous.
Andreboisvert1985
Excellent!. They could definitely open an upmarket restaurant but that would go against the ideals. The food and concept is excellent. Definitely worth coming here.
ANGRY COFFEE MAN
Erghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.. I've been here twice with a friend who insists on bringing me.<br/><br/>The food is hideous, and so are the people. I feel like i'm going to catch something by dining here. Sorry not sorry.

Really enjoyed the food & the place. Awesome vegetarian food, not the mock meat type but just beautiful homely kind of dishes. The place is lovely as well. You can also sit outside and enjoy the park.

Vile. All the dishes I tried tasted vile (with more than just a hint of oregano)

18/10/2015<br/>This is one of the best vegetarian/vegan ‘restaurants’ in Melbourne. Every time I come here, the dishes are all different. There’s always a range of vegetarian dishes, ranging from salads, stews and curries. If you like dessert – try it. The chef uses interesting ingredients that you don’t normally associated with desserts.<br/><br/>Previous review:<br/>8/10 = Excellent. Food: Satisfying food - just went in, queued and got to choose from 6 dishes! All vegetarian dishes were sensational, mostly curry styled food. The polenta cake/ slice was delicious. Even went back for seconds! I contributed lots of money so I could support these places. You are not paying for what you think the meal is worth to you, but what you can afford to keep the place alive!<br/><br/>Environment: Lots of space - both inside and outside but packed with diners. Staff was very friendly and efficient in clearing out the tables and answering questions.<br/><br/>Verdict: Will come back soon! Maybe try out the other venues too.

Great vegetarian food , very friendly staff . A very crowded place, but worth giving it a try!

Wonderful wonderful wonderful........ Love the food, love the concept, love the crowd, always pay more than necessary to support the concept. If you can afford to, please don't put 50 cents in the box, help support the place and others who are less financial.

Interesting Idea. Such a nice concept. Food was pretty good, but not special. Staff extremely nice and helpful. Quarters a bit tight. Would recommend just to support this kind of service.

Lovely. I've been a few times before to Lentils and found that the food wasn't great because it was dry or sitting in the bain marie for too long and wasn't fresh enough for me over the few past years I've been. <br/>I came in again today because I wanted to get a soy chai latte that's already made fresh for you and the money goes to a good cause, so I might as well. When I came in at about 3:00pm, I saw that everything looked fresh and enticing, so I decided to eat there and really enjoyed the curries that were made! I think when you go, notice the times that food is fresh or come in the right hours of the day to get fresh food if you don't like your food dry.
Emmafox41
Good food!. Love the buffet u guys doing everydAY for lunch! thumbs up :)

Ok for what it is. I like the Idea of Lentil As Anything because it's trying to help the community. I enjoyed my dinner there last Sunday however most of the dishes were the same as previous times and it wasn't that exciting. The stand out was this dessert that was made if tapioca and it had cardamom. I will come back when my friends play their gigs and hopefully they'll have the Mac and cheese or the lasagna.

Fresh and yummy. They always have fresh salads and curries, really delicious. I miss the juicy fake meat curry and the cashew and pea curry was absolutely amazing but havent seen it for years! Cashews are expensive though. I love eating here with my friends, it is a social vibe and really beautiful place to eat if you choose to sit outside.
Erin.fringe
Amazing energy.. One of my favourite places to go for a meal.<br/>They have such amazing vegan options and the entire place just has the best atmosphere and vibe. Everyone is always so happy to be there, so happy to help, smile, care. It truly is such a beautiful idea and i hope more people get behind it and support such an amazing place :)

Great initiative!. I have only been here once after my partner and I stumbled upon it accidently.<br/>Once we understood how dinner service worked, we lined up early and were one of the first few people to serve ourselves at the buffet. However, after we had eaten and went for a walk, we came back to find the que was HUGE!!<br/>People have to realise that there is an entirely different concept behind this restaurant and that "normal" dining experiences shouldn't be expected.<br/>Some of the people in the line are homeless, wanting a nice feed. Since you're not obligated to pay anything, I think we are ALL lucky to be able to experience a place like this, but especially those who find a meal hard to come by. <br/>I stuffed some cash into the box before I even reached for a plate, as for me it wasn't about what I felt the food was "worth".<br/>It was a great experience and quite an eye opener and I would recommend a visit atleast once!

A VOLUNTEER'S STORY. I love Lentils & have been a volunteer for approx.12mths & still love it. I work thru the week in Sales, & volunteer in the kitchen every Sunday, helping the paid staff, as a Kitchen hand. I learnt quickly what "HOT HOT'! meant, meaning I am carrying a pot, it is hot!!! I must admit I did not know what I was getting myself into, because I used to be so critical about people coming to Australia, thinking that all people who came into Australia were lazy, until I met some of the kitchen staff at lentils. How wrong I was to judge!!! Most of the people at Lentils are hard working individuals contributing to the community, & working in the kitchen, I have not heard once any complaints about how hard they work, they just do it, even in the extreme heat!!! I am so proud of being a volunteer, & do wish that more volunteers would give Lentils a hand, even if is a few hours per week. The Chefs are absolutely amazing at how creative they make the meals, & I am still learning such invaluable skills in the kitchen, for example how to cut up carrots in a certain way to make a dish look fabulous. Like I said before, I am only a volunteer, only a kitchen hand, but love to help out as much as I can. At the end of the day, I wish all people were hard working as Lentils, with the same attitude, and maybe if people were, what a difference it would make this country. I urge you all, please give Lentils a hand, make a difference, you will learn a lot of various skills, & also develop friendships along the way as well. You certainly will not regret it!!!<br/>cheers!!!<br/>Michele Poole.

After waiting 2 hours for breakfast our table was advised there was some 'slightly bad news' and that our order had been lost and the kitchen was no longer doing breakfast so we would not be getting our order. This was even after a waitress had told us half an hour prior that our breakfast was on its way. I would have liked to give this place a good review because I liked the concept behind it but, after leaving hungry and extremely disappointed with the service, will never be going back.
Food In My Tummy
Great Idea. Excellent concept and friendly staff. The world needs more places like this.
TwoLittle Ducks
This place and all others like it encompass beautiful values and moral, what a wonderful place to support. There is not nearly enough of this in Australia.<br/>The food is healthy, generous, delicious and you know you are supporting a good course in paying for it!<br/>There are cheap people who can afford to pay and should pay more then they do, these people are not supporting the company they are selfish and do not understand respect, sadly it is them who will hinder the chances for homeless and truly needy people to benefit. <br/>The people who also complain about service or quality or make bad reviews because this wonderful place is busy or say its horrible because free loaders go there, that is not a reflection of the business so drop it. You want five star food and service and you want it for free. Appreciate this place. <br/>I love it and I don't personally know anyone who doesn't. Go there with a good heart, a hungry belly and you will love it too!!
Nicholas Dircks
Always great food, and my son and I have tried most items on the menu. Please remember people, be generous with the amount you pay when you can afford it.

It is just wonderful place! I love it !

One of the best vegie spots. I could say I'm a regular here and also volunteered as well because I loved the concept and the food!<br/><br/>Breakfast is a stand out for me, they have a good set menu they keep to and it's a la carte. They always do a good muesli and have never been disappointed. <br/><br/>Located in such a nice place, overlooking the garden and farm if you're sitting outside, it's just a relaxing atmosphere in general.
Tony Chen
Don't go for the food. Go because your really hungry, or you've never been or just want to donate some money... the food is just canteen food, so i wouldn't go just for the food. <br/><br/>I've been about 10 times in the past 10 years, and it's always just after the market because i'm really really hungry. Interesting place and concept that's still going strong. I hope it stays around.
Peeran Billimoria
It's food for a good cause.. It defines Melbourne and it's magnanimity. I will definitely return and get in few of my friends who would like a good meal pay a fair price.
Hannah Conda
LOVE LENTIL! Always good for a feed and I love the community vibe.

You'd be very hard to please not to enjoy LAA. It's relaxed with great Veg food and you pay what it's worth or what you can afford. The concept is to be applauded, as does the restaurant. Highly highly recommended!
Michele
I love this place, fantastic idea, great food made with love. Like the "feelgood factor" of paying for someone elses meal too.<br/>Friendly volunteer staff that put regular cafe staff to shame!!
AnythingNigella
Good food, good atmosphere, usually some kind of live music. It's a happy place :)

Ride the wave. Lentils is a Melbourne institution, there's no doubt about it.<br/>I have a lot of love for this place on its ethos alone.<br/>It is kind of like the russian roulette of eating though.<br/>Some days you go there and you get a a treat with some handmade lunchtime dumplings and a greek doughnut.<br/>Other times it's carrot starring as the staple of every dish with a different spice.<br/>Sometimes it's a little washed up, but then there's nothing quite like it when you're riding the crest of the flavour wave.
Sepa
Food queues and freeloaders. Nice spot in summer but forget winter. Had to queue half an hour in the cold just to get a feed, and then there were no seats inside. Food was the same old slop but nobody pays anymore, so it's hard to complain, I guess.
Samantha Daniels
Yummy for the soul. I love coming here, not just for the food. Sometimes eating "soul food" tastes just as good. Its nice being able to sit outside and munch on some yummy vegetarian food, especially during the farmers market. This really is what Melbourne is all about. I will now come here often, being surprised I pay what I think they deserve and, as a consequence, gave them more than I would anywhere else. Well done guys, love it.
Suzie Bentley
Good for everyone, really, everyone. I've been here when I've been a bit strapped for cash and I've been here when I've given a bit more. I really appreciate the philosophy behind the place and the atmosphere and the surrounds are always lovely
Pnb
Fantastic vibe. I really enjoyed eating here with my friends. the lentils were great and there was a friendly, fresh atmosphere great for kids. i do feel bad for this place though when you can see people who don't pay $1 for their meals and who are just taking the piss - its a great place for people who cant afford meals, but I wonder how this delightful place will sustain itself financially with others who can afford to pay simply don't.

Vego heaven!!. So yummy and such a great philosophy behind the place. If you haven't tried, try!

Melbourne's hidden gem! Great atmosphere, live music, friendly people and amazing food every time!

My wife is a chef and doesnt like lots of restaurants, but Lentil as Anything is now a favorite.... great vegetarian food... ***** :)

Contemplating vegetarianism. Could make any meat eater contemplate becoming a vegetarian with food like this place serves. Very impressed.

Love love this place. Great buffet vegetarian and vegan meal and then off to pat the various animals in the paddocks! I love Lentil as Anything.

I like coming to Abbotsford Convent, the beautiful gardens are perfect for a picnic, the Collingwood children's farm or a walk down the Yarra trail is nearby and it's beautiful any time of the year. I've eaten many times at Lentils and it can be a mixed experience. The drinks are usually very good but could take ages to order and the quality of food depends on the day. Last Saturday night was the first time I experienced a really long queue outside, it took us at least 40mins to get inside and I was considering walking away a few times. Once inside we got the usual mix of salad and curries, the lasagna was a bit strange and rice clumpy and burnt but we were glad to finally eat something. I might avoid Lentils on weekend nights from now on. The highlights were dhal and awesome Greek doughnuts. You might find St Kilda's Lentils offerring more personal experience and amazing curries, try beetroot or Moroccan mix veg.

A truly unique Melbourne experience. It took a smart person to come up with this concept - they knew what people wanted and where they wanted it. Not only have they created a unique food and dining experience, but they have established an environment for a community to develop - I'm sure for many people this is their second home, or possibly even home. As a person who runs my own business, sometimes I'm a little concerned that the place doesn't appear to have someone in command, but maybe that's the feel they are after. The place can get extraordinarily busy at times, but things seem to (eventually) sort themselves out. The vegetarian food is of a pretty good standard. The crowd is on the younger side (probably enjoying the price free environment), but certainly suitable for all ages. I'm proud we have this truly unique experience in Melbourne - I'd recommend taking visitors from out of town here.

Give it Try & Support Your Community. Love the concept and food was lovely. Would have liked the curry to be a bit more spicy but it' still good.<br/><br/>Lunch menu today included: lentils, potato & pumpkin mash, 2 different salads including a carrot one?, pilaf rice/herbed bread, cauliflower soup and a lovely light date pudding. The dess ert was a real surprise as it was light and not too sweet nor drowned in syrup.

Has to be the best place in Melbourne. What a great concept... pay what you think the meal is worth!<br/>Help others who can't afford food and enjoy the delicious food on offer here. An amazing atmosphere and environment. Breakfasts at Lentil As Anything are the best, coffee is great and the people are always interesting and kind. Lunch buffets rock too. Check it out. Totally recommended to all!

This is the perfect Sunday afternoon. I love it. The concept of donate what you think it's worth is great and this place really works. The food is great and the atmosphere is even better. Slightly alternative/hippy but that's what I love!

Bring your diablo!. Runs on a pay as you feel basis. I've been there like nine times in the last week and I don't know if it's by coincidence or what but I've always felt like paying zero.

Such a great idea! Nice flavours, lovely location, sitting in the park is so enjoyable now summer has finally come. Smily people, good vibes! Keep it up guys :)

Awesome. I love the atomsphere in this place. It has a great vibe.

Lentil As Anything in Abbotsford is in such a charming location with beautiful gardens and the old convent buildings, the ambiance is well worth your money. But they'll let you decide just how much of that money you are willing to part with. They focus on the idea that the diner should pay what they feel the experience was worth, into a discreet, unmonitored money box.<br/>The food is superb and always changing, there is no set menu but rather the food is cooked and the diner simply grabs a plate and serves themselves. Generally there are about five sides to choose from (excluding the large quantities of rice, salad and desert). Out of those five generally three or more are vegan and gluten free.<br/>Generally there will be a delicious mild African curry of some type, the best dhal you've ever had, a pasta dish that can range from a stir fry to a spaghetti, and something a bit more interesting such as an apple curry, mushroom oregano polenta, Moroccan hotpot etc.<br/>Your tastebuds will be celebrating these interesting new favors as you try to cram as much of it in your mouth at once.<br/><br/>Other pluses are:<br/>Outdoor area is dog friendly<br/>Interesting live music<br/>They make a mean chai latte <br/><br/>Downside:<br/>Pay as you feel makes it hard to sell drinks, as such the options are water or a range of hot drinks including, teas, coffee, chai etc.

Remember where you are!. There needs to be more places like - it saddens me that some customers are complaining about service not being 100%.Try not to lose sight of where you're eating at! You're not there for the fine dining standards, but you do go away full with extra change in the pocket. No, the food is not always top notch, but I've paid a lot more for the same standard! Love the chilled vibe, and the staff are a lot of fun, albeit a little slow in delivery.

Not sure how I feel. I liked the concept behind this restaurant, but can't say I'd recommend it...<br/>The food is tasty, and I like the idea that you donate what you want, but the mounds of hippies lining up with tupperware ruined it a little for me.<br/><br/>Also even though the signs stated whether or not dishes were gluten, dairy or nut free, I still found a handful of nuts buried at the bottom of my desert! (And I'm allergic!)<br/><br/>Was a new experience, but I'm not going back!

Lentil As Anything, located in the Collingwood Convent, is in my opinion the best of the Lentil As Anything restaurants in Melbourne. The fact that it is surrounded by the gardens, if it's a warm and sunny day, enables you to enjoy the environment while eating homemade, yummy food. Love the concept, makes me very happy to spend 10-20$ on a meal that is originally unpriced. As mentioned by other users, some clients are quite selfish - although obviously well-off money-wise, they leave without paying. Disappointing!

Gone to the dogs. People love this place because it's cheap (i.e. they don't pay) and the whole experience makes them feel bohemian for a night. In reality, the food is bland and cold, coffees take forever to arrive (if you can make an order at all), and while some are nice, there are too many staff and patrons alike with haughty bad attitudes. I've been scowled at by the former for having the audacity to ask if there were any more bowls, and by the latter for asking if a chair was free. And don't get me started on the blonde American lady who appears to run the joint. She's sooo nice to some but outright rude to anyone she deems below her royal hipster highness. Get over yourselves, you pretentious dolts. <br/><br/>The other night we sat freezing outside while the surrounding heaters stayed off. If cost is an issue, perhaps they can find a way to utilise the abundance of hot air in and about the place. I used to give generously but now I don't even think it's worth the train fare to get there. This place has gone to the dogs and they can keep it. Not going back.

Fantastic. Great selection of food, good for babe watching, pay as you feel, and it makes you feel GOOD

3 May 2012<br/><br/>As a recent import to inner-city Melbourne I've been determined to try as many new cooking styles and flavours as possible. However it was while researching where to spend my meagre income that I came across the concept of socially conscious dining. This idea is excellent, I thought, and I decided to spend my time here in 'the three thousand' seeking and reviewing these hidden gems. <br/><br/>Lentil as Anything - The Convent, Abbortsford. <br/><br/>It wouldn't be a stretch for me to say I had preconceived notions of what to expect from a vegetarian 'pay-as-you-feel' restaurant. My mind flashed memories of drum circles, loose clothing and the sort of flavourless Dahl usually served at music festivals and corner-shop curry joints. <br/><br/>These notions began to waiver the second I walked onto the beautiful Convent grounds. Lentil as Anything is tucked away in a quiet corner. It was raining the day I visited so I sat inside, but their outdoor area is awash with lush green foliage. <br/><br/>The menu is constantly changing and, largely due to the nature of the business, caters for as many tastes as possible. I say menu, but I should probably say buffet. The only thing you order is coffee or tea. I had my usual long black and was pretty impressed. Well brewed with a good crema. The taste profile was lacking any outstanding notes, I suspect a blend, but was in no way unpleasant. <br/><br/>I tried everything on the menu except the Borscht, six dishes. My favourite by far was the chickpea frittas. Served with a sauce that was a mixture of tahini, yogurt and something I couldn't quite place.<br/><br/>There was plenty of starchy, winter stomach fillers. Spiced rice, mexican beans, rosemary roast potatoes and roasted pepper macaroni were all delicious. I did find a couple of small hairs in my rice, but I was strangely calm, as though I'd braced for a tackle but only received a slap. <br/><br/>Overall it was a good, filling meal. I wouldn't go there on a date, but I will be going there again.

Hmm. Love the concept, but the food itself was not good. Could this be because too many diners pay too little? I paid less than I would have at a different restaurant because the food here tasted like it was made from cans of Home Brand (perhaps I came on a bad night). Thus, a vicious cycle? As much as I like the concept, I have no wish to return.

Great concept, nice food but too many tight arse patrons.... A great concept that has been going now for some time. We enjoyed the food, esp. the dhal and the rice, along with some dessert and a coffee. We were sitting right near the contribution box however and noticed in the over an hour we were there very few diners paid anything! Fair enough if you can't afford it but a number of these hipsters were clearly middle class! <br/><br/>I think they should be stricter on this and maybe have a minimum charge of say $5 if you don't have a Healthcare card and then you can pay more as you like. It seems a shame as all the staff are nice and friendly too. Noted that one Urban Spoon diner below said they could only afford a gold coin donation as they were saving up for a latte later!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a group of 4 we put in $50 and some spare change but if we are just subsidising tight arse yuppies who try and effect some 'edgy' alternative vibe I am not sure I want to come back...

Wat a beautiful place to be...best most chilled out vibes..food was above par considering the pay as ya feel system...def going back

Unique. Tasty. Generous. So we should return them the favour! :)

I was a little taken back by my experience here. I have been to buffets and sat around communal tables before, and I appreciate the whole point and community spirit around lentil as anything, but I can't quite get my head around it. After waiting a good half an hour of waiting in line we made it to the dining hall. The food was set out in Bain maries which didn't appear to be heated. Any food which was being topped up was literally poured into what was remaining in the tray, it was not replaced with the fresh food, just mixed in, not a great food hygiene practice. I stuck with a salad, Dahl and some potatoes, they were nice but the whole set up turned me off a bit, it felt a bit dirty, having to eat with piles of plates on tables and nothing being wiped down. It was something I always wanted to try but I wouldn't be going back again.

Long live the lentil. Why haven't I been here before? Great spot, perfect setting for a lazy Sunday Arvo. Ate ourselves silly on the vegetarian buffet, loved the momos (Tibet dumplings) and the curries were good. But the real draw card is the whole concept, interesting food and love the crowd. This is a must do in melb.

Nice!. Have heard of lentil and their amazing concept from a few fellow punters - but this was the first time i visited last night. Ive always been a fan of strong flavours and curries - and being a vegetarian the choices around are few. Had their buffet dinner and i thoroughly recommend it. will definitely be back.

Great experience. Can't say too many positive things about this place. As a proud Irish man I can say with confidence the potatoes were amazing

An absolute delight. Beautiful, healthy food served with a smile. Lentil As Anything in Abbotsford has a great community atmosphere and is always full of friendly, interesting people. This place is a real treat and the first place i recommend to travellers visiting Melbourne.

For me, this place embodies the Collingwood community spirit. It's about looking after people, helping out, feeding people who woul not otherwise be able to eat a proper meal at a reasonable price. Rice dishes are awesome and it's good wholesome food, and no animal died an horrendous death for me to enjoy it. It's about eating, contributing and enjoying the place, people and the food.

Lentil as Anything. I can't believe all the positive reviews about this place. We ate at the St.Kilda one about 1 year ago and it was without doubt the worst experience all round in over 30 years of eating out. Terrible food. The "Special" dessert was a frozen apple pie and I nearly broke off a tooth when I bit into it because it was still frozen. Unbelievable!

Quality food, tastier than I thought possible. I've been there twice, and though its crowded sometimes, the food is well worth it. Not all locations are the same though.

A second home. There's really nothing bad that can be said about Lentil as Anything... amazing food, great concept, lovely communal atmosphere. One of my favourite ways to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Dinner with a view.. ;). Things to LOVE: <br/>-buffet of seriously flavoursome vego food<br/>-BYO (2 bottles of red)<br/>-great scenery (aka we perve on everybody)<br/>-the chai lattes are pretty good<br/><br/>things to dislike:<br/>-some tight a-holes who have the ability to pay, don't chip in enough, this place struggles to help out those who need, and simply provide awesome dining for those who don't ... come on people!

Never a let down. The beautiful surroundings of the Abbotsford Convent is not the only thing Lentil As Anything has got going for itself.<br/><br/>Live music, fantastic wait staff, tasty food and altogether a magical dining experience.<br/>We call it Hogwarts down at Lentil As Anything, Abbotsford. Very family & dog friendly.<br/><br/>It is worth a days outing to have lunch, explore and walk along the Yarra river.

A silver donation. We stumbled onto this delightful and piquant place a few weeks ago and we were plesantly surprised by the quality of the food ($2 between the two us was all our wallets can muster) leaving the change to be spent over a forthy latte at St Ali where we had to meet up with Voithi and Kathiki of Seven Seeds fame in Nth carlton. The food is great and very cheap (almost painfully cheap - in fact the Fin Rev costs more - or for free if you happen to pick one up off the ground, together with The Age....the curries are off the charts and the Tikka Masala was just heaven..whilst the staff dont speak much english dosent matter

A little bit of chaos. I've had mixed experiences here, but never left hungry.<br/>Sometimes the food would be cold, sometimes they changed where you're supposed to go to line up or pay.<br/><br/>At the very least it's a nice spot for lunch or dinner.

Very decent feed in a wonderful location set in the gardens of the abbottsford convent. The food is simple but works, the staff are really friendly and the value is well your own choice! Great concept leaving you not only full, but also with a smile.
Simon
Good Veg feed. Enjoyed eating here on Friday night where buffet was on offer. Selections included garden salad, beetroot salad, pasta, potatoes, mixed veg, dahl, rice, eggplant curry, pumpkin curry and rice pudding. Given the wholesome and healthy food on offer, the food is varied and filling without the need for meat. Good healthy feed, relaxed place and good place to go out and eat.

Oh no!. My sister was going on holiday so it was a farewell lunch. the one in St kilda and Belgrave were so great, we thought this one would be too, but it was more like a soup kitchen. <br/><br/>when we said goodbye, everyone at the lunch stopped off somewhere on the way home for something to eat. not good

Lentil as Anything located in the Abbotsford Convent has a wonderful community feel and leaves you feeling happily satisfied after indulging in its hearty vegetarian buffet offerings. The staff, mostly volunteers, always have a smile on their face and create a really friendly atmosphere. The restaurant attracts a diverse customer base because you pay what you feel the meal is worth.

Great food. Good staff, clean and this has a brilliant atmosphere. A very honest experience, that requires your honesty.

Always leave with a smile. I've never had a bad batch of food at Lentil. The atmosphere is great (even though it can be a little cramped at times) and the food is always worth trying. I've even brough fussy eaters here and they've left full!<br/><br/>The best thing about it is that the food comes from all around the globe and that I've been able to try dishes that I never have before. The pay-as-you-like system unnerved me at first (never having seen this before) but I soon got the hang of it - the meals were always good!<br/><br/>I've heard a rumor that the Convent won't be renewing Lentil's lease.... would be a shame to miss out on having this wonderful resturaunt and this perfect location!
Natural Selection
I love lentil! The convent is such a great location; chilled out country vibe and lots to do- the farm and markets are always on... There is often music happening at lentil too! Much more than just the great food! Mostly the food has an Indian style but other items too. It feels good knowing they seem to try to be organic- the milk and coffee was by what I could see, that's really important to me, and you're helping migrants get work experence too! Yay!

Lentil As Anything is another Melbourne gem. Pass the word around, this place has great food with a unique dining experience. The menu changes regularly so there is always a reason to come back.

Beware vegans and vegetarians - Lental as Anything cooking with donated animal fat. When I visited the Lentil as Anything at Abbotsford convent the staff told me that all of the food on offer that day had been cooked with a blend of vegetable oil and animal fat. The justification offered for this was that this oil/fat blend had been donated. Seems a bit dodgy claiming you are a vegetarian restaurant and then cooking with animal fat.
