Very tasty and good vibe cafe. I love this place And kind staffs. And especially coffee is awesome taste. I recommend visit this cafe and drink and eat something
In the beautiful grounds of the Abbotsford convent, the Convent bakery is a lovely place to stop for a coffee and something to eat. The space itself is beautiful, making the most of the gorgeous old building that it resides in. There is so much history here, and that adds to the warm and cosy feel.
A delicious selection of cakes and baked goods is available, and I've always enjoyed the food here as it's freshly made and has that hand made quality. The coffee is also really good, as is the service. Staff make you feel welcome, and it's nice to have somewhere to stop while exploring the beautiful gardens.
The Abbotsford Convent Bakery is the best place to bring your dog and enjoy the sunshine outside with a bite to eat. The baked goods and paninis I’ve tried from here have always been of very high quality and my parents love the sausage rolls and pies. The loaves of bread I’ve taken home have also been good, it is nice to not have to get sourdough sometimes to have a good loaf. Highly recommend this great spot in Abbotsford!

Pastries / sandwiches looked inviting but we had a heavy breakfast at another cafe so we just had another cuppa and a vegan apple crumble. Coffee was strong which is the way we liked it. Vegan and gluten free apple crumble was delicious and wowed by hubby who’s usually not into vegan stuff.
Great atmosphere especially on a sunny day. Lots of alfresco seats around if you want to bring your pet along. Great spot for people and pet watching
I only had a gluten-free brownie from here but it was one of the best gluten-free brownies I have had. It was delicious, moist and not too sweet. They seem to offer a few nice food choices and I thought the staff were helpful and friendly. It's a good stop in-between exploring the convent. Good seating options.

Visited as a guest in the Abbotsford Convent bakery for lunch just today. We were entertaining friends from Tasmania , and enjoyed our table. We chose to stay beautiful outdoor. I just want to say that, in addition to a nice meal, we had delightful foods and had everything we needed. Excellent and will be back definitely. Thank you Convent Bakery 😊
With a beautiful location, and very friendly staff these guys have some fantastic baked creations that I havn't seen too often, worth a visit!
Love this place. Been here many times for a coffee or a toasted sandwich. Always get great and friendly service. Love the surroundings of this place. Highly recommend.
Ready for brekky after building up an appetite sampling treats at the market stalls? Grab an outside table at this bakery cafe and wander inside to take in all of the baked treats on offer. Great brekky menu with non-baked options, like corn fritters with eggs.
The Abbotsford convent is beautiful and it's stunning architecture creates the perfect atmosphere to sit on the manicured lawns and enjoy a delicious wood fired pizza from the convent bakery. The oven is original and over 100 years old and the staff use old fashioned baking techniques to create yummy fresh bread and other baked goods. A really picturesque spot for a date
Gorgeous renovated old convent made into some cafes, art gallery and marketplace. The Convent Bakery is so beautiful for breakky. I had the field mushrooms breakfast, amazing!! Beautiful, peaceful surroundings. I took lots of stunning photos there. Warren Santos Chad Cunnington
Nice place for a rare sunny afternoon. I especially liked the fact of a cafe/bakery in Melbourne that is open after 4pm!
Many options of both savory and sweet, all tasted good but nothing amazing.
The outdoor of the place is what's important the most, perfect for families.
look, the food is good i wont lie, beautiful place and surrounding. I love the wagon wheel as a special treat even its $5 each. But boy they have some really unhappy staff there, they are either rude or no emotion. Come on its such a beautiful face, wont hurt to smile a little!
Lovely place for a coffee and a lunch. Beautiful area, coffee is nice and bread is delicious! Had two toasties and a fruit bun, a real treat! Highly recommend. A little paradise in the middle of the city.
Come here quite a bit but this is my first review and the day I come the flat white I ordered is watery so was my wife's. Pity because the food was good. Lovely setting despite my Orinthophobic daughter not liking the pigeons one bit.
If i ever want to impress someone or cheer them up, i take them to the covent. It has the power to transform the most regular cafe into a delight of architecture, culture and outdoors.
Tried this cafe a few times only for coffee but today I had breakfast , the mushroom plate . Very tasty and big portion . My soy latte was nice too! Also I really liked the indoor setting !
Went here on a gorgeous sunny day and enjoyed sitting outside. Tables were all shaded. There were plenty of pigeons which frightened the 4 year old with us. Had a wonderful time walking around the grounds afterward, and seeing the buildings and reading about the history of the place. Lovely selection of sweet things. I had a Yoghurt topped muesli slice which was very yummy. Also sells ice cream. Couldn't resist buying an artisan bread when we left.
Everything we had was thoroughly delish! The dilemma was "do I keep drinking the coffee before it gets cold" or "do I enjoy every morsel of that mushroom on toast before baby wakes up"?!!! Life is all about the tough decisions...
SERVICE: 3.5/5
Greeted once I walked in, fast and friendly service upon ordering. Staff were nice enough to let us know to order our coffee first before the machine was going to be turned off for a service. Smart move...you don't mess with people's caffeine cravings!
Coffees came out in minutes, pastries a few minutes later and the main brekky dish 5mins after that. Super fast service - stoked!
FOOD: 3.5/5
There were so many inviting dishes to choose from...I am sure I will return to try more. We tried to order a "balanced" spread to get the gist of what The Convent had to offer.
Lattes: Nicely smooth and velvety. Enjoyed our lattes however I would say it is top-heavy on the milk (I don't mind) so if you prefer a stronger hit..ask for a double!
Choc croissant: Quite tasty but not as flaky and buttery as other good ones I've had. Heavily dusted with icing sugar but wasn't too overpowering as the croissant itself wasn't too rich. I could do with a little more chocolate...said every woman ever.
Steak & Mushroom pie: Texture of pastry was just right, base cooked well and top was crispy. Chunks of tasty steak within and very fat & juicy mushrooms. Strong cracked black pepper seasoning throughout.
Mushies on toast (+ smoked salmon) : **DISH OF THE DAY** Everything plated up was so fresh and complemented well with one another. Serves of each item were perfect to ensure each fork full was balanced with flavours and textures until the last mouthful. Quite a large portion and ended up sharing with hubby. The juicy mushrooms were dripping with flavour, then that goat's curd mmmm. Combination of butter, burnt lemon and thyme blended wonderfully in this dish. JUST YUM!
DECOR & AMBIENCE: 3.5/5
Interior was warm and inviting - everything kept rustic, perfect! Spent most of our time outside which was so relaxing. Large timber picnic style tables lined up next to a small grassed area for kids to run around and hang out with the pigeons. Time went by fast soaking up that nice warm sun scoffing down my coffee & food.
KID FRIENDLY: Yes
Wow! Simply amazing, the steak sandwich was an absolute hit and the service was incredible. Would highly recommend to anyone in the area! Will be back.

I really liked the coffee here, though the temperature depended on which barista you got (the guy with glasses always managed to nail it). I spent three weeks at the convent on a recent course, and the cake they sliced up and put out the front was always appreciated. I ordered the broccoli quiche once, and it was terribly over-seasoned. Way too salty, and this is coming from someone who loves salt! Their small baguettes were okay, but I always felt like they weren't super fresh. Not a bad place, considering the lack of options in the immediate area, and certainly lovely for a coffee in the beautiful surrounds of the convent.
Bread is very good. Coffee isn't bad but not the best in the area (we are spoilt for choice). Try the corn fritters, a fresh and tasty dish.
This cafe offers a good range of cakes and drinks, savouries, focaccia and the usual cafe fare. I enjoyed the pistachio friande which was something new. Nice coffee and toasted sandwiches too.
You know you're taking too many pictures of food when your partner casually looks up from his phone 5 minutes after the custard doughnut has arrived and asked "Ok for me to eat now?". I couldn't help it! So much custardy goodness enveloped by the fluffy doughnut, I had to document it for "research purposes". The baked goods at Convent Bakery are at a league of its own. The choc chip cookies are soft and chewy, the wagon wheel was a huge door stopper sized treat with enough jam and marshmallows to send you into a sugar high, and the bread - both white and sourdough - are crusty yet soft. Our meals of eggs benny and mushies on toast may be simple but let me tell you, the breads were excellent. Quality ingredients definitely make a dish. Our skinny lattes were so-so but then again, the coffee was not what we were here for. Service was down to earth and polite, the nuns would be proud.
Was fairly surprised at the quality of food here. Came here after completing volunteers at the childrens farm. Ordered a blueberry danish, tiramisu slice, lamb mighty pie and chicken schnitzel baguette. Baguette was especially great, loved the texture of the bread. Tiramisu base was awesome as well. Will definitely come back :)
Made my way to Abbotsford bakery today. What a wonderful location and an even better ambiance to the place. Ordered the broccoli and cauliflower tart with coffee. Also ordered the corn fritter and a muffin. Super friendly service and decent food, excellent coffee!
Heard that the slow food farmers market was on at the Abbotsford Convent. After a bit of a wander around, we were starved (and frozen). Decided to have brekky here at the Convent Bakery. Coffee had a pretty good aftertaste and warmed us up. We had the cornfritters, poached eggs with smoked salmon and the beetroot, cauliflower, peas, baked potatoes with poached eggs. Both dishes were pretty as a picture and very hearty. 'Twas a good Saturday morning which ended up with goodies sourced from the market which included organic veges, a family sized scallop pie, honey, Lakes Entrance flatheads and Portarlington mussels, ingredients that promised a few gourmet days at home. Satisfaction 😉
The convent bakery a lil gem in the inner suburbs of Abbotsford. Ive been here a few times and i just love the ambience of this whole place. Few cafes around but if you have a bit of a sweet tooth and wanna have some coffee with it, this is the place! It does get a bit busy on a weekend and even busier on a gorgeous sunny day but doesn't hurt to have a bit of patience to enjoy this wonderful place (next to the cwood farm for the kids).
Grab a table and order at the counter or perhaps sit on the lawn and enjoy a picnic. Theres pizza, pies, sandwiches, sweets, cakes and more sweets!!! Try the red velvet cupcake - they're so moist and creamy! Mmmmmmm....
This place and the 4h Saturday Market has to be one of the best kept secrets in all of Melbourne. The fresh market outside is totally awesome and a must destination for all foodies! Breakfast was perfect, everything I want for a Melbourne weekend brunch!!!
Pastries, Pies, Cakes = high quality - very nice and tastyPlenty food options on the menu, particularly for breakfast = I had the Tex-Mex Salad was flavorsome(Recommend it)Coffee = Good
we went on the weekend and was very busy, but didn't have to wait long for food or coffee to come out
Cons: Bakery items sell out - we got there at 2 PM and only three pie options left (Will have to get in earlier next time) If you have a bird phobia you probably want to stay away, they are everywhere and are not intimidated by humans.
Once a month there’s a farmers market on at Collingwood Children’s Farm, which is just outside of Melbourne City. We hadn’t been in AGES and when the weather was just right the other week (as in, neither rain nor extreme heat predicted) we made the trip and enjoyed a fun family day out. Entry to the Farmers Market costs $2 per adult and children are free, which is great value when compared with the cost of visiting the farm on non market days.
A really lovely place to visit, the bakery is inside the grounds of the Abbotsford Convent, and feels like an isolated little town away from the noise and busy-ness just a street away. You can see the old buildings and history, which is really nice.
The bakery has lots of outdoor seating to choose from, perfect for a warm lunch or coffee break (though warning for bird haters, there are heaps of pigeons), and also some indoor seating options.
It has a rustic and warm environment, and is within one of the old buildings on the premises. There are lots of standard bakery products, including pies, sausage rolls, and quiches, as well as many dessert items (cakes, cookies, muffins).
We had the chicken and veggie tart and a pumpkin and feta tart, and they were both delicious. The crust was homemade and flaky, and the filling was flavoursome and generous. We couldn't quite manage one tart per person, and probably could've shared one and then had a small dessert. It was great having some authentic homemade baked goods, and it was quick to come out (just required reheating).
The coffee was also quite nice, and I had no problems with it.
It can get quite busy, and stock does run out (we arrive just after 1pm and there were only the tarts and desserts left), so if you have your heart set on something, get in early!
It is a peaceful haven to stop by to and relax, and I think it is worth visiting at least once!
The queue is crazy on a Sunday afternoon but its all worth it. Ordered a spicy chicken with chips, vegetable soup and fish and chips. The vegetable soup was full of flavour coupled with the toasted buttered bread was a match made in heaven. The kids fish and chips meal was a generous portion. Will be back again!
There are a handful of dining options within walls and the Convent Bakery is one of them. Here, they maintain old fashioned bread-making techniques using organic flour and artisan baking skills to produce rustic and heavy loaves. Using the original 1901 wood fired masonry ovens which had played an integral part in the self sustaining life style of the Sister of Good Shepherd, the bakery carries on an old tradition.
Have a great environment and relax atmosphere. The pastries are good. We tried the blueberry Danish and pain au chocolate. The texture is good. Is quite doughy. But is taste great!
Lovely bakery/cafe, favourite place to grab a coffee or lunch while at work just around the corner. Definitely plan on checking it out on a weekend! Lovely location and good food/coffee :)
Great bakery! Great place for family relaxing vibe! Cakes and pastries look great, must come back to try more!
Have great character inside and outside.
Very scenic location and random atmosphere! All the pastries and sandwiches on offer were amazing. We had the chicken and veg pie (pic of it demolished attached) which was certainly one of the best pies I've ever had and I'm from the UK. Plus the smashed avocado breakfast ,was good but nothing special. Coffee was nice. Did not have room for dessert but did look good. Would definitely go back👍
A little overpriced but coffee and food are consistently good. Take away coffee cups are thin and have been very hot, almost too hot to hold. Recently renovated.
Had a delicious coffee here and the chicken snitzel baguettes. The food looks incredibly fresh and you want to eat one of every cake in the windows. They catered well for those in our group who need to eat gluten free. I wanted to but a custard tart after I ate my lunch but the line up was so long, I couldn't wait so I plan to head back later this week to get one.
Unconventionally good. The Convent Bakery might be in the thick of the city sprawl when you get outside the parkland precinct in which it sits, but for a moment you can pretend you're at some old place in the bush as you dine there. The rustic bready food offerings match the setting. It's like a menu inspired by hippies, not nuns. (Yes, I know they're not around any more. The place is overrun by bubs from the nearby Collingwood Children’s Farm.) I had a good quiche -- an open-faced tart in a round shell with crimped crust edges. It was filling enough that it slowed me down on the rest of the round-the-city bicycle ride that my group was doing. The dish came with a good salad for $12, although it was mostly rocket -- like almost every salad in Australia. The Convent's flat white was decent too, up to Melbourne's high standards.

I was keen to visit the Convent Bakery for it's history. The grounds are beautiful and the place was busy on an overcast day. I took the mille-feuille style vanilla slice away and ate it at home. Its appearance is quite traditional; three layers of flaky pastry, 2 layers of crème patissiere and dusted icing sugar. Its shape long and skinny, the pastry noticeably wood fired in their historical ovens and rich in colour. For the second time today, a pleasant experience but not mind blowing.
...I bought a big ass muffin ($5.0) and decided to explore the area with my newly bought snack. The apple on top was crispy, the custard underneath was sweet and creamy; I was sad there wasn’t more through the muffin. The muffin top was baked to a crisp and I enjoyed breaking it off and enjoying it like a semi-cookie. The walnuts were a surprise and even though I don’t usually like nuts in my pastries I found it worked really well. This is one of the best muffins I’ve had, coming second only behind The Stables of Como.

Abbotsford Convent Bakery is one of my favourite places in Melbourne. It’s a great place to be on a sunny Melbourne day at one of the humble tables taking in the Convent ambience. The Bakery is in the kitchen wing where the Sisters of the Good Shepherd made their culinary delights. I love how the Bakery has preserved the ambience of the inside area – rather than give it the full modern restoration. Love it!
I had the handmade Rosti, looked great, but Rosti was a bit like soggy mash and it had haloumi cheese with smoked salmon .... I don't think the combination worked that well... Although I do love haloumi.. Coffee was nice
Avocado Smash. Best avo smash I've had. Generous with the avo and best bread!
Delicious fresh fruit buns and yummy hot coffee!
Good pizza. Enjoyed their pizzas which were reasonably priced for wood fire pizza. Coffees were average. Will be back
Good. Its good. I enjoyed it. I think some people expect too much. Remember its a bakery, not a restaurant
Beautiful passion fruit tart and lovely coffee. To top it all off the customer services was excellent... Will definitely return
Had muesli with yoghurt and berry compote. Was really yummy but a little disappointed as it was listed as 'Bircher' but clearly was not soaked muesli. However it tasted great as did my latte. Service fairly quick. Left satisfied. My coeliac friend really enjoyed her flour less orange cake
Good Pizza. We decided to all meet up at the Convent and stumbled across the bakery and thought we'd give it a go. We decided to try the pizza which were good, not great but good. Add a few beers from the tap and all was good, Definitely give it another go.
Great service, awesome coffee and delicious wood fired fare - do the bread making course with marlon - brilliant !
Wow that crispy chicken burger was a fab challenge
Full of fresh favors and crispy chicken a suprize by the new menu
Boys come and challenge yourself to the crispy chicken burger
A destination, not just a bakery. I love this place. The owners clearly put a lot of care and passion into their work. The bread is outstanding, and every time I fly back to Perth I am asked if I can bring some of Abbotsford Convent Bakery's fruit loaf with me. It is THAT good.
Great salmon Benedict! And they gave me any extra side of hollandaise sauce for free. Very happy
Came here for Sunday brekkie with the family. Service was alright- the guy behind the register had no idea what he was doing when we asked if he wanted the small change. Staff kept bringing us food that wasn't ours!
I ordered the berry pancakes... Weirdest pancakes I've ever had! They were almost like a cake consistency and were very crunchy on the outside. Different. The $19 convent breakfast was average, my mum said the 'baked beans' tasted like nothing. And that was true. Could probably go to Pancake Parlour for a better tasting big breakfast!
The best item we ordered was the salmon eggs benedict.
Coffee was lukewarm and average, my latte was very milky.
Overall... Ok place. Dont come here for breakfast, and try and get a table INSIDE! The birds swoop at u!
Having said all that though, it's a cute place to catch up with friends/family. Won't be back for the pancakes....
The beef sandwiches were outstanding....onion relish really made them. Had a toasted bun with the best butter and jam.
The coffee was very average and the place was freezing.
Cant find any faults in this restaurant. Great hostess, nice service, good location (Colligwood childrens farm is just next door) situated in an old convent. Most importantly fabulous yummy foods! We had tomato and capsicum soup, it was very good! Also had half hawaiian and half salami wood fired pizza, one of the best pizza we had in Melbourne!! Good iced chocolate! Will definitely come back here again! xx
A really good little bakery in a secluded location. Great feel to the place inside and plenty of seats outside too. The cakes on offer look amazing as does the bread selection. The chai latte was also not too bad. I might jar to head back here for the all day breakfast!
Leafy mid-week coffee spot. Tried the fair trade coffee here last week on a pleasantly warm day, and it was not too bad indeed. Cappuccinos had a reasonable espresso shot, with reasonable milk texture tilting a little to wett~ish microfoam. Would give this cup 3.5/5. The veg sandwiches looked like it had uncooked pumpkin (a real bug-bear) so I skipped it. Can't imagine what it would be like on a cold day, or if the mum's with little darlings were out in force (shudder to think). Great gardens out back.
Beautiful Environment. Love the place itself and the concept - a regular haunt for me and my friends. Service is almost non-existent, however if you can get over that and not expect good service, then you'll be fine as that remains consistent each time. The food, the seating amongst an almost surreal setting, the casual and relaxing feel of this beautiful place is what you go for. Plus the markets and the amazing nature setting that surrounds the place, including the Abbotsford farm all make for a great escape if you need one.
Yummy bread and pastries. Many of you will know about the Melbourne Community Farmers' Markets (http://www.mfm.com.au/). Each week Melburnians can buy wonderful fresh, organic and local produce direct from producers themselves. One of these is at the Abbotsford Convent and also (next door) another at the Collingwood Children's' Farm. Pop into the bakery for some lovely bread and pastries cooked in 100+ year old wood fired ovens. Yumm!
Visited the bakery with family for lunch on a very hot Sunday. There was plenty of shade under the big umbrellas which made sitting outside very pleasant. We tried a number of food selections and drinks and found the whole experience to be very enjoyable. I would highly recommend the bakery for catch ups and great atmosphere.👌
Purchased an absolutely delicious hot cross bun here this morning. So fresh and full of flavour. Their spice blend is a little different to typical hot cross buns - so good and highly recommended.
Loved the chilli scrambled eggs. Had a side of chorizo and hash browns. Quick service. Lots of items in cabinets that looked yummy. My son loves the frog in the pond too :)
I had the most delicious breakfast and I really enjoyed the atmosphere but not the pigeons! I wasn’t comfortable with them flying around me thinking they might attack my food in any second. Definitely coming back because what I ordered was really great.
Great food, mostly made in house, so not sure why the bakery has bad reviews. The pigeons have made a mess on many of the outdoor tables, but you can always take away and sit anywhere in the convent gardens to eat.
Great atmosphere. Good selection of food made on premise. However, I found the prices a bit high.
