I'm usually not a huge fan of Thai food, but my gosh did I have a fantastic meal at Golden Boy! We were dining as a group of 7, and went with the Tuk Tuk menu for $58 per person. From the get go, the service was impeccable. The Tuk Tuk menu isn't a defined menu - you inform the staff of any special dietary requirements (due to allergies, religious reasons, or if you just have a picky palate) and any dishes in particular that your group wants/doesn't want, and the chef will serve up a range of entrees and mains accordingly, followed by dessert.
I swear the waitress informed us there would be 5 dishes, but the food just wouldn't stop coming! (Not that we were complaining.) I'll try to recall all the dishes we were served, but there must have been more than 10. First up were the Braised Pork Shoulder Pancakes with
Cabbage, Sour Herbs & Plum Sauce that came with the individual ingredients arranged neatly on the plate and required us to construct the wraps ourselves. We piled pulled pork, cabbage and the sweet smoky sauce into the middle of the lovely, super soft pancake and rolled it into a small wrap. The pork was a little dry to be honest, but the sauce did well to save it. I enjoyed this wrap.
Next up were the Son-in-law Eggs. I really like my eggs cooked this way, with the yolk nice and gooey, so this dish rated highly with me. Then came the King Fish Sashimi. Very fresh, and was a very welcome refreshing dish because some delicious, crunchy fried chicken wings arrived shortly after. These were sinfully yummy, especially with the slightly sticky sweet chilli sauce. The meat was very tender, and not too greasy. We were served the Edamame Beans next, and although a very simple dish, it received a lot of praise from all around the table. We also got a dish of stir-fried greens, which I unfortunately didn't get to try. We were also served a chilli plate on the side, which no one touched.
The first main dish we received was the Egg-net salad. This salad was extremely refreshing. I'm not sure what was in the dressing, but it was so lovely and tangy, and complemented the crispy pork extremely well. We were then served the Pad Thai Noodles. Although not the best I've had, it was still a good rendition of the classic Thai dish. There were generous chunks of chicken throughout the noodles. Next was the "Crying Tiger", which was a dish of char-grilled sirloin. This dish didn't stand out to me, and didn't leave me going back for more. The curry we were served was the Green Curry of Chicken, which came with a large bowl of rice to share. The curry was a little too watery for my liking, but the flavour was definitely there. The chicken was tender and there were lots of it in the curry. It was probably good that the curry was liquidy, otherwise it could have been food coma-inducing, since there were still more dishes to come! The last main was the Fried Whole Barramundi. The fish was cooked to perfection, with a great crispy exterior and extremely tender meat inside. The Green Apple and toasted peanut salad on the side was really similar to the salad in the Egg-net dish, and eaten with the fried fish made for an amazing, perfectly balanced mixture of flavours and textures.
We were all incredibly stuffed at this point, but we weren't going to pass on dessert. The Roti with Pandan Custard was an absolute hit at our table. The roti was light and crispy, and the Pandan Custard did well to cut through the slight greasiness. So, so yummy. There was also Poached Pear that came sitting on top of a bed of sweet, sticky coconut rice pudding. Oh my gosh this was so heavenly. The pear was perfectly poached and had an amazingly soft but sturdy bite to it, and the rice pudding was divine. The Banana Fritter with Coconut Ice Cream was my least favourite of the three, but it was in no way a bad dish - it just got outshone by the other two!
Overall a fantastic meal, and great value for $58 given how much food there was (6 entrees, 5 mains, 2 sides, 3 desserts). The food was exquisite, the service was top notch, and the restaurant has a lovely atmosphere well suited to group dining. I highly recommend Golden Boy!
