Review Mayflower Restaurant - Adelaide

Louise Shines
My mum and I had breakfast this morning here as part of our overnight stay at the Mayfair. Very posh looking inside with lovely decor. The breakfast was buffet style and the food I chose was delightful, very tasty. Lovely place to eat.

We sat in the casual area of ‘The Den’ for coffee and delicious sweet treats. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The piano music playing in the background was lovely.

High Tea that was more Low Brow.. Firstly this is a review based on "our experience" as Coeliac diners who required Gluten Free substitutions; a nutritional requirement that was made aware to the staff four days prior to our arrival. So for those other diners who come here not requiring GF options, then this review probably won't apply to you. You would think that when you are offered nutritional changes due to dietary requirements, the kitchen staff would ensure that your experience is as close to the original menu as possible... unfortunately not. My wife and I went for High Tea with friends on a Sunday, but was served something that resembled more like a poor mans picnic. Our food was plonked onto individual plates with no tact or real attention to presentation, compared to the three tiered platter our friends received. Our substitutions to the standard menu were lacking flavour and substance. Clearly the chef didn't put much thought into our taste bud needs. - A spoonful of halved cherry tomatoes that weren't seasoned or dressed. - One prawn wrapped in a lettuce leaf and cucumber, again not seasoned or dressed. - One frozen falafel that was bland and dry. - A gluten free sandwich slither that was stale. (See comparison photos attached) We were also charged the same amount per person which just added insult to injury. There were some positives however. The staff were lovely and the live piano created a wonderful atmosphere. Alas we came for a great meal and not just serenading. However, as we have heard that the Mayflowers evening à la carte menu has some fantastic offerings, we will give them another chance to redeem themselves.

Excellent dining experience here. Foods are so yummy, seafood platter so fresh. Hi I love the Beef Wellington and traditional garlic bread. Atmosphere and service was perfect too.

We had high tea for Mum's birthday here and we couldn't fault it. The service was wonderful, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was beautiful. It was really good value for money, too, especially considering others we've tried. The staff even gave Mum an extra sweet with a happy birthday message which was a nice thoughtful touch, she was delighted. Will definitely be back.

A high tea for something different. Highly recommend. With a glass of bubbly to start and so many yummy treats both sweet and savoury. Top class service.

Its certainly not cheap but everything was top class. The ambience was excellent, food very good to excellent and wines were great. Our waiter was a bit of a character but made the night all the more enjoyable. Not a fan of the booking process through Fork

We went to High Tea at the Mayflower Hotel yesterday and it was perfect in every way. The room is beautifully set out with plenty of space between booths and tables. Upon arrival we were escorted to our table. We had table water and then of glass of Mumm Champagne. The food was delicious and there was a good balance of savoury and sweet food. We both loved the sausage rolls, as well as the corn beef and poached chicken sandwiches. My wife loved the chocolate cake with Passionfruit fruit icing, macrons and the chocolate dipped strawberries. The tea was served in a beautiful china teapot and a lovely cup and saucer. The service was excellent. Our person explained the food and was very attentive and efficient. My wife had such a lovely time that she indulged in another glass of Mumm as well as coffee! High tea was recommended to us and it certainly did not disappoint in anyway, we loved every minute !

Amazing food.. I think this is the best I’ve ver had in Adelaide!! I was on the edge of thinking there aren’t good restaurants in Adelaide. I actually had as room service at the Mayfair hotel, but the food quality was amazing, good portion and it was really tasty!! I’m happy that I was lazy to go out🤣 The ocean trout was cook just perfectly. Beautiful crisp skin and so pink and juicy inside the meat. Chips were tasty and crunchy. Salad was referencing. But the presentation was a bit.. maybe it looks different if it weren’t for room service .

Felt like we had walked into the 1980s...interesting restaurant located in the Mayfair hotel.

Upon the review of the menu this was also the case, I ordered the Beef Wellington which was very delicious & my friend ordered the steak which was a little light on the light side so we ordered a side of broccoli, however when it arrived it was a cold broccoli salad ??!!

Overall it was an ok experience 😀
This place is nice. Great service. Great cocktails, but the food wasn’t amazing. It was still good. Even the wow factor of the dessert wasn’t there. Looked spectacular but it actually tasted like it had been made days ago which is odd for a Saturday night. Disappointed as I’d heard great things.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I could book a table on the day of (the last time I tried to book a table for a Saturday a week out and they were all booked out). Although it being a Wednesday night might have made a difference.

We ordered the salmon rose, steak tartae, the snails, the mushroom pastry and the charcuterie board. Every single one of those items was a ten out of ten. Everything had intense flavours and the food just melted in your mouth. The charcuterie board probably could have been improved by substituting the sour dough bread out for biscuits instead.

For mains we got the steak on a bone, the lobster bisque (the whole lobster grilled was sold out unfortunately) the salmon pie special and a crab pasta.

While delicious, the mains weren't as fantastic as the entrees. The pasta in my crab pasta was a tiny bit overcooked while the salmon pie was a little dry.

The dessert cart was very special. There were so many choices. I got myself the panacotta, while others on my table got the swan choux pastry, fruit salad and some sort of chocolate dessert. All very delicious and again, ten out of tens.

Overall a great night and I'm definitely looking forward to coming back.

Also, it's not often I'm impressed by toilets, but the toilets here were clean and very impressive.

We dined here for dinner on sat night. We were running late, and informed the staff of our arrival time of 830. We were told 845 was the last sitting, and kitchen was open to 9. We were staying in the hotel and attended the restaurant reception at 836. After standing there for a few mins we were sat down. We were told we could no longer order entrees and we could only order mains due to the kitchen closing? As I write this I still don’t understand. So if I wanted the cold Caesar salad I would not be allowed it? We ordered the lamb Wellington and chicken cordon Bleu. Both were generous sized. Perfectly cooked and served with delicious sauces. We were also given a free piece of Sacher torte as it was my birthday, complete with candle which was special. Prices are standard approx $36, but on generous size. The restaurant, is in the basement, with lovely decor, comfortable bench seating with lovely cushions, and if you are seating the right way you see into the wine room. There is a dessert trolley, which is not my cup of tea, but it is in keeping with the old building, white table cloths and traditional food. Service was a tiny bit lacking. Our water glasses were not refilled once, and were empty by dessert. The couple behind us had their finished plates sitting with them for over 20 mins. Overall it was a pleasant experience with tasty food.

Loved it here!!! The food was amazing and my favourite part was when they brought around the huge selection of desserts in a cart. The atmosphere is relaxing and be sure to check out the Hennessy Bar on the top floor. Also the pastry pic is the lobster soup! So yummy!

Absolutely amazing. Best French food I've had in years. The service was amazing. Reminds me of food when I was an apprentice. Thank you so much

I was lucky enough to go to the Mayflower for dinner on New Year's Eve. The menu was a set menu with a cocktail upon arrival and smoked salmon hors d'oeuvres. There was a choice for entree and main and a selection of desserts available. We were promptly seated and our order for our cocktail was taken but we then unfortunately had to wait for over 1/2 an hour until we informed one of the wait staff that we had been seated but no one had taken our food orders or further drink orders, nor had we received a wine list. We knew they had forgotten about us as tables that arrived later had their orders taken and had received food and drinks. Our wine order was taken as was our food order but we again had to wait again until we actually received any wine or food. The supervisor then arrived with our entree and she seemed to pick up that we were a little disappointed with the start to the night. She ensured that things were no longer overlooked for the rest of the night.

I ordered the oysters with a champagne vinigarette which were fresh and creamy and just delicious. My husband ordered the vol au vent with chicken, pea fricassee, abalone mushroom and leek. It was so tasty and was a generous portion size. The pastry was so flaky and crisp and buttery.

For main we both ordered the fillet mignon which was served on a bed of mash with roast carrot and bernaise sauce. We were also given to share triple cooked hand cut chips and an apple and slaw salad. The main was so delicious, perfectly cooked and very tasty. We were so full we needed to have a break between main and dessert.

The dessert options were something dreams are made of. If you haven't been before they have a dessert trolley where you can select the dessert of your choice from a selection of about 8 different options. I had the religieuse which is their specialty and came recommended. A definite hit for the chocolate fan. My husband had the orange and almond cake but her was so full he had a couple of bites and couldn't eat any more.

All in all it was a lovely experience but we would have appreciated slightly prompter service upon arrival. We can't fault the food and think that when we go back next time it will be less hectic for the wait staff so service will be faultless. I have to go back, how can I resist that dessert trolley!

There is nothing I can say about Bethany Finn's latest venture that adequately describes how beautiful this place and her food is.

The restaurant is opulent and comfortable. The service slick and perfect.
The food to die for.
I love steak tartare and it didn't disappoint.

Go there for a special birthday or anniversary or just because you want to be looked after by the best in the business.

Call me old fashioned, call me fancy... but I (Amanda) enjoy partaking in an afternoon of high tea as a lovely way to spend time with my girlfriends. After visiting Sean's Kitchen for high tea (review here), the Mayflower was next on my list to try. I was even a little more excited than usual as I had previously dined at the Mayflower for their first birthday celebrations (review here) and knew of the quality and elegance I was in for.

Incredible quality. Well balanced flavours, very well thought out textures and what a dream of a setting. The chairs are lush, and comfort is always key when you're in for a long and enjoyable dinner.
I started with the seafood bouillabaisse. Seriously gentle saffron flavour, seafood only just just cooked so very tender. Served with a pastry hat it was almost a bit 80s. The pastry was buttery and brown though hadn't puffed to full effect, and a little soggy in part. If I had to eat it every single day of my life though I wouldn't complain. Absolutely delicious.
I followed with the prawn, basil and tomato pasta. They were Asian noodles rather than Italian pasta, but that's not a complaint. I cannot fault this dish. Absolutely incredible.
The rest of the party were also blown away by entrees and mains, and desserts- I couldn't fit any in but the dessert trolley is an absolute spectacle.
The asparagus side is also well worth it. Buttery and covered in slivered almonds it was a meal in itself.

5 star food and service experience! I started with some fresh bread which had clearly been baked that day and was delicious. For entree I had a classic seafood cocktail. The waitress explained that the chef's was inspired by the 80's with this dish. Well, I remember it from the 70's and it consisted of many tiny prawns arranged around the edge of a stainless steel bowl filled with shredded iceberg lettuce and served with a delicious cocktail sauce. The only difference with the Mayflower's version was that they were large, plump prawns and there was only three of them. It was delicious but over fairly quickly.

For mains I ordered the ricotta gnocchi with peas, fava beans, goats' curd and pea tendrils. This was a delicious meal. The flavours were gentle and the gnocchi was light - nothing like the heavier potato version.

Unable to squeeze in dessert I sipped on some wine before heading off very satisfied.

Absolutely stunning... This was too good to be true; in other words, this was really, really tasty!

I had the salt-roasted salmon with a sticky teriyaki sauce, pickled cucumber and sushi rice. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the sauce totally balanced out the salty salmon. The pickled cucumber added a sense of relief. The rice was tasty when mixed with the sauce. On the side the chefs added a rice crunch that was more crunchy than I expected, but you can never have too much crunch!

Had dinner at the Mayflower when staying at the Mayfair hotel for a break the food was lovely and well worth the visit - staff are friendly & caring.

Old school classics done with absolutely no finesse. Not a single dish was anything except disappointing. The bulk of the waiting staff appear to be international hospitality students. Felt like dining at a trade school, but with a retail price point. Meal culminated with a clearly day old pastry from the dessert trolley. Don't waste your time
The Mayfair Hotel is a stunning five star boutique hotel which houses the charming Mayflower Restaurant and Bar located at the base of the hotel. Tonight Head Chef, Bethany Finn, welcomes the guests and provides an insight into the direction the restaurant has taken with the use of fresh, local and sustainable South Australian food and wine. Bethany has even installed two beehives on the rooftop of the hotel so she can farm fresh honey herself for use in the restaurant. The menu has an old school traditional feel but with some modern twists to remind you that you haven't completely travelled back in time. This old world charm is brought through from the food to the decor and the servingware, providing an air of sophistication and grace. On The Chopping Board (OTCB) were exclusively invited to The Mayflower Restaurant for a Chef's Table Experience to celebrate the Mayfair Hotel's 1st birthday. All food and beverages were provided on behalf of The Mayfair Hotel.

I would highly recommend Mayflower Restaurant. It delivered in all regards - ambience, service and most importantly, food.

I dined at Mayflower last Saturday evening with my sister and two girlfriends. We each had a main, and shared two salads and chips. That was too much food for us, especially because we had heard about the dessert cart.

My Lobster Pie was absolutely amazing! It was full of flavour. The accompanying lemony sauce was also lovely but it is as delicious without any sauce. My friends all enjoyed their dishes. Gnocchi looked amazing but is on a slightly smaller size. Both salads were delicious, and very generous.

As has already been described in previous reviews the dessert cart is pretty impressive. The waitress described each dessert and suggested the best accompanying sauce. How could we say no :) The desserts were lovely. My sister had the fancy looking swan and decided that it wasn't anything too special in terms of the combination of flavours. It was more its assembly that makes it attractive. It tastes like profiteroles filled with nice cream (she is a bit of a dessert snob with dessert/pastry chef mum).

The service was spot on. Welcoming and attentive, able to answer all questions about the dishes.

Probably the only downside was the noise. It was a Saturday evening and the restaurant was fully booked. Unfortunately, it detracted from the fine dining feel that this place could offer.

Nonetheless, I look forward to coming back again!

There’s a new boutique hotel on the corner of King William and Hindley Streets in the old CML building. As soon as you walk into Mayfair Hotel, you’re in a different world and you forget that you’re actually on the somewhat seedy Hindley Street. It’s a quality and classy fit out, and you don’t have to wonder why they have curtained off the street view on both sides.

Lunchtime catch ups are good and The Mayflower Restaurant and Bar in the Mayfair Hotel at 45 King William Street, Adelaide makes it even better. Hotel restaurants always have a feel of luxury to them and this one is no exception. The bar, the couches and the grand piano next to the restaurant looked magnificent and we were greeted by the friendly staff straight away. We must admit we felt a little special!

I’ve had some ordinary experiences at hotel restaurants so in the back of my mind there’s always been a bit of reluctance to go to the Mayflower. Located in the basement of the newly built Mayfair Hotel, this restaurant and bar exudes a sense of opulence as you walk in. The long bar, the grand piano and the couches create a sense of elegance and sophistication. A divider separates the restaurant from the bar, but the integration between the two is seamless.

Great experience. Lovely decor and atmosphere. Water was offered immediately and drinks orders taken promptly. We started with some local proscuitto which came with some pickles and lovely bread. The housemade duck proscuitto came with an excellent salad however, it was hard to find the duck in it! Being a duck lover but not a pie lover I was torn as to whether I should order the duck and tangerine pie. The pastry was excellent (no greasy mouth feel afterwards), lovely tender chunks of duck and a beautiful background of citrus. The pork cutlet was well cooked and a good pick. We also ordered a side of brussel sprouts which were so delicious they would turn any sprout hater! We could not be tempted by either the dessert or cheese trolley on this occasion as we were too full.
This was a Special treat indeed! This was all-round fine dining loveliness. Starting with champagne oysters, lobster bisque & crab salad then moving onto prime beef (chateaubriand-meant for 2 but easily fed the 3of us) carved in front of us to then finishing with an array of desserts to choose from off a trolley! Yes!👌
So delicious, beautiful decor, attentive & excellent service and surprisingly not as expensive as as we had in mind. Definitely treat urself or someone special with this place.😀

The decor is very nice and the staff very friendly and professional. The Lobster Bisque was really tasty and I do recommend it. The 500 gram T-Bone steak was very bland and not juicy at all. I only ate half of it and saw the lady on the table next to me leave her steak also. I had the Chestnut and speck sprouts which were nice and the macaroni cheese for sides. The macaroni cheese tasted like it had a lot of white pepper in it. The dessert trolley is a good looking sight and I had the german mud cake. It was dense and tasty.

Delightful atmosphere and decor, beautiful acoustics for dining conversation.
Service. Unobtrusive and the whole experience was what dining should be unrushed and enjoyable.
Good variety and large portions, not expensive. Descriptions below are just a small example of variety on offer.
Entree:
Duck prosciutto with melon and goats cheese served on tender red cabbage leaves.
Roasted salted beetroot with chevre and nuts.
Main:
Chicken kiev with potatoes
Grilled whiting served filleted with the head on with caper and lemon sauce.
Side of peas and beans with butter lemon sauce.

The dessert trolley is a wonderfully tempting idea.
Choux pastry swan with cream and custard filling
Cream caramel - best one ever tasted.
I Eat Adelaide
Dined here for the first time on Wednesday night. Located on the lower floor it is a rather plush and comfortable hotel dining room with 3 waiters and a manager on duty on this night. We both ordered the duck pithivier which was excellent served with a nice jus, great flavours. We shared a slaw and apple salad which was a perfect accompaniment, cutting through the richness of the duck. We skipped entree so that we could partake in the dessert trolley which was wheeled in during the evening. Such nice theatre - the black forest trifle and the chocolate hazelnut slice were both delicious. I might have to revisit to have that creme brulee. Service throughout was attentive and we were kindly given a tasting of one of the wines by the glass - a nice touch. However staff wearing jeans seemed incongruous with setting and they were a little too eager to show us the trolley asking us 3 times if we were ready, despite telling them we wanted to finish our wine first which we ended up pouring out ourselves. Maybe they could also crumb the tables after mains -this only takes a minute and would have removed an annoying piece of slaw left in the middle of our table. This was the only hiccup in a really enjoyable evening. Bethany Finn has made a welcoming come back to SA dining.

One of the newest addition of Adelaide's fine dining. Large portion for its price. Mayfair Hotel is located on King William Street between Curry Street and Hindley Street. The parking was difficult but they do have a discount for guests staying at the hotel to park at Wilson car park for AUD$18 for 24hrs.

Delicious small and larger meals. Fantastic beef tartare and amazing cavery trolley beef rib with with Yorkshire pudding, duck fat potatoes and green beans. Paired with lovely wine and cheeses. It was a pleasure to be served by light-hearted, fun, yet knowledgable professionals. Will certainly be back.

Australian King William St. February 17, 2015 This place is new. It's at the Mayfair Hotel, on King William St, at the west end of Rundle Mall. I wonder if I have to pay $2000. I've landed on a hotel on Mayfair. :( Duck and tangerine pie 7/10 At this very fancy restaurant, apparently the best dish is… a pie. There are photographers here, photographing the new restaurant. I'm happy to pose, if they ask nicely. I get out my iPhone, and show them how a professional does it. Did you know that you can take photos sideways too? The pie is crispy only on the very exterior. Inside that, the pastry is doughy and pleasant. The duck, inside, is pleasant too. It could almost be anything, even more doughy pastry. It just acts as a filler on which the mild tang of tangerine can be tasted.
