There is a giant billboard above this place that reads:
"Mexican food you can't make at home, gringo!"
Naturally this challenge had me intrigued and I am happy to admit they were right!
I went last Tuesday evening and had a Habanero Prawn and a Grilled Chicken Taco accompanied by several Pacifico Lagers and an absolutely amazing jalapeño margarita.
Everything from the ambience and service by friendly, professional waitstaff to the open kitchen, aromas and tastes just reminded me of travelling Mexico, and they nailed it.
It was so good I went back again last night.
I had been eyeing off the Duck Nachos since the week before so we got those to split (with a Day of The Dead PA and a cocktail special - both perfect pairing) and I regret this decision still.
I should have just gotten them for myself. IMO, hands down the best nachos I've ever eaten and I absolutely regret having to share with my date. I'm still wondering if it would be too weird to go back again today for lunch. The flavour and spice were on point and taste still lingers fondly in my mind like a lost lover.
Again, service was awesome and the waitstaff were always nearby if you ever need anything.
Fairly confident I'll be back next week, too.
TL;DR
10/10. Flipping amazing. Get the Duck Nachos with a Pacifico and follow up with a Jalapeño Margarita.
absolutely beautiful place. the staff were very helpful in explaining the menu and drink suggestions.
had the duck nachos, mango chicken tacos, and two small mains.. all were perfectly cooked and well presented.
well priced for 2 people and would reccomend to all my friends
Amazing service. Amazing atmosphere. Amazing food!! We went for 4 of the Beach Cantinas (entrees) and 2 of the small mains and shared between the two of us. Flavour explosion! Stuffed to the brim. Meals came out super quick. Highly recommend the Lamb and Mezcal Fajitas. To die for... Try with a Day of the Dead Pale Ale. Brilliant. Also well priced and great, fresh, quality ingredients. We'll be back and be telling everyone to try these guys out!
They are not the Mexican you are used to of a by gone era. This place is modern, it has a smidge of Asian flavour which is unique to Australia. The duck nachos are put on the table when I arrive. They are lick the bowl good!! I would go every single night just to eat the duck nachos! The menu has changed somewhat and so have the surroundings since my review but the quality of the food is superb. As the restaurant calls them, their "show off" chefs out do themselves. Before you go please call and make a booking.
At first I was sure Mexican food would not be my thing. However the serves were amazing. Family advised me to have a couple of entrees and a small main. Fantastic.
The best bit though was the really great service by the delightful waitress and staff. Recommended!
One of the best modern Mexican food I have had, wonderful services, creative food and great atmosphere
Went there yesterday Overall experience excellent Staff friendly, ambience great( lightning to read menu a bit of issue),food delicious, service swift & best of all the jalapeño margarita can’t say enough I want more🍸(would love to see it presented better & make it more interesting & inviting)We will be back Thank you Mexican Society for a lovely experience
Awesome restaurant! Great vibe, attentive and friendly staff and extremely flavoursome food! Highly recommend the pork belly mini burrito
Food, service and atmosphere... Amazing
We didn't have a booking, the place was absolutely packed and they still found room for us with no fuss at all, will definitely be back
Amazing food, amazing cocktails. Loved the duck nachos and lychee margarita in particular
Our first visit last night and it won't be the last, my family and I were all very impressed, the food was delicious! I would highly recommend trying the banquet.
The "flashy" shared menu, at $55 a head, was great value as there was so much food. We enjoyed everything but the lime and clilantro chicken was out top pick
Never disappoints! Friendly staff, quick service, amazing food

The four of us ate outside. The heater kept us comfortably warm on the chilly night. The service and food were great and the service fast. Our waitress was informative and lovely. We would easily come back again next time we are in SA.
Best Mex in town!! Delicious food with fantastic service, would highly recommend.
Such a great place, food is sensational and a fantastic atmosphere, will definitely be back
Spectacular food; an amazing mix of flavours. Far above and beyond what most people think of as Mexican. Very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive staff. And a great looking locale.

Great service and food well what can l say but delish, a place you must try 10/10 well done cheers dags
Great wait staff and the food was brilliant. Modern Mexican at It's finest.
Took the kids for an early meal. It's their new favourite restaurant! The kingfish cerviche was a standout and service was top notch
4 of us shared the banquet and it was delicious! So much food and the service was outstanding. Will definitely be coming back!
Very impressed..crab taco devine. .jalapeño margarita delicious
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit last night. Food was ridiculously good, great drinks, fantastic friendly staff and awesome atmosphere. Thank you!!
Four of us stumbled across this place while trying to decide where to eat. Food divine, Sangria was delicious and could not complain about the service. Coming back soon.
I quality feed in Gouger St. Very authentic with a touch of spice. The corn was one of the best I have in Australia and the fried chicken wings were a delight. Recommend for Mexican lovers.
The guacamole is amazing, a small serve but flavour was amazing. The 3 beef enchiladas were perfect. Small once again but presentation was fantastic and flavours were perfect and the beef was so tender. Classic margaritas were a modern twist on a classic drink. Table service was prompt an professional.
I’m a sucker for mexican cuisine and this place really exceeded my expectations. The soft shell crab taco was delicious, and my lime and cilantro chicken was so good my partner kept stealing it off my plate. Ice cream sandwich was bomb. Honestly I can’t pick a winner, they’re all great. Service was friendly, but a little slow (over half an hour for our food, another half an hour for dessert). Hard to get someone’s attention and they kept forgetting our orders. But since we weren’t in a rush and it was pouring outside, we didn’t mind waiting.
Loved their entrees.Beautiful softshell crab taco and prawn taco.Duck nachos were perfectly spiced and not too hot,Tuna ceviche was fresh and loaded with flavours.Helpful and smiling Service staff.loved it
This is my fave Mexican place in Adelaide. There’s a reason I keep coming back and they keep winning awards. Foods always fantastically packed full of flavours. The feed me menu is fun filled with lots of food, the only time I was unhappy with it was when food kept coming out quicker than we could consume it. The desert nachos were a winner when they first opened. I love their ever evolving menu, even the corn cob has been fancied since I first came here. Great service, always gets packed so make sure you book. Yum! Must try.
Fantastic little find! Absolutely delicious food! Every single dish we had was amazing. Service was friendly and the food came out super quick. Only draw back was that we were seated in the separate bar room with pretty bad music and a nightclub feel but the delicious food made up for it. We will definitely be going back soon!
A lovely casual Mexican dining experience at a moderate price.
Craving some Mexican on a Friday night, we decided to head to Mexican Society and use up a $30 voucher that we'd been holding on to for a while now. Upon entering, we were greeted with a bustling, lively, and spirited atmosphere. Hanging lights and candle-lit, it was an appealing setting.
To save ourselves the headache of choosing what to eat, we tried the 'Mexican Traffic' banquet option. Not quite knowing what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised by some of the courses that came up, as well as the amount of food! Our favourite from the night was the elote cake, with salted caramel icecream, supplemented by pistachio and corn crumb. The lamb meatballs were also quite nice, as was the duck salad. Nothing really fell short in terms of food.
Unfortunately, our only real complaint stems from the time allowed for weekend bookings - we were informed when we booked that there would only be about 90 minutes to eat. For that amount of time, we had to really struggle to finish all the food. Although we knew well how much time we had, we were unprepared for how quickly time passed in good food and good company. We left feeling a tiny rushed and very stuffed, and it felt like a small detraction from the otherwise good experience.
For casual Mexican dining, we were quite satisfied. If you plan to come for the banquet, either be ready to eat quickly, or go on a weekday!
The aim for tonight was Asian cuisine for dinner but then we walked passed this place and saw their menu on display in front of their store which enticed us and the plan changed. We got here around 6pm, thankfully we were seated quickly enough considering we didn't have a booking on a Saturday night. We were placed at the bar, no biggie as I do enjoy watching bartenders make drinks. We started off with the lychee martini, one word to describe it, delicious. For entree we had the prawn taco and ceviche. Both were really good. Would have appreciated to have a slice of lemon or lime on the side for the prawn taco. For main, the beef cheek fajita. It was pretty much build your own. That was also good. A few element was just a bit unusual and I don't think goes with your deconstructed fajita was the creamed corn that we just ate on the side. It was fairly nice on its own though. I was hoping to have dessert but we were too full by the end of it. The wait staff were very friendly. Verdict? Will definitely coming back to try more on their menu.
Amazing. I loved this place. I had the Smoked Guacamole, Soft shell crab and Grilled chicken taco. The service was fantastic. I am really annoyed i forgot her name, but as I’m pretty fussy, she was very helpful and lovely. Soft shell was spicy for me, but delish. I couldn’t have eaten it any other way. The Smoked Gauc i still think about. Haha. We had a few cocktails and instead of the tequila happily changed it to vodka and yes i know we are at a Mexican restaurant. If i had to pick on one thing, it would be that we were all very close. I felt likw the tables around me were watching me eat. Anyway, a hug 5 from me!! Fantastic. I can’t wait to go there again!!
There's a reason why this place won the best Mexican in Adelaide for 2017. Food is delicious but you need to know what to order. We had the prawn and soft shell crab tacos which were delicious. The pork ribs were equally amazing. The angel hair pasta was unfortunately average ...
The frozen classic margaritas were delicious, We shared plates of the grilled corn, tuna ceviche, smoked guacamole and pork belly burritos. All the food was super fresh and yum, good tunes, good vibes, would definitely come back!
The food is consistently delicious, third time we've been here in a couple of months, we just want to try everything on the menu! Any of the tacos are amazing, the elote is a must have and even their nachos are better than any I've had. We have tried both banquets, the second is our favourite, but the first is good too, you get good value for money, we were quite full at the end of both banquets. Staff are very friendly and very helpful and informative. Would definitely recommend it.
Having been to Lucky Lupitas and Hispanic Mechanic dining at Mexican Society did not come without expectations. Hispanic Mechanic is easily our favourite Mexican restaurant in Adelaide, Korean fusion gladly welcomed. Mexican Society of Chinatown replaced the former tapas restaurant Mesa Lunga which was another winner. I actually had my hen’s night there! The decor is a long way from that now with pops of colour everywhere, hanging plants and a brightened up space.
Service staff were really nice and attentive. The whiting dish was amazing! I was hooked. The ribs were to die for! Fun and social atmosphere. Will be coming back again!
You know you go to a place a lot when the staff tell you they will get you your duck nachos when you walk in. I love their duck nachos, to be completely honest, I will go so far as to say they are the best nachos I have ever tasted and I've had nachos in Mexico and America. Hey, someone else could think they're rubbish but a review is just an opinion. I've got more about the glorious food on my blog. Website below.
I've been a few times now and always find service friendly and attentive, if somewhat rushed.
The menus are fantastic- the elote is the best vegetable I've ever eaten. I do have an issue with the fact that almost all of the meals are served with a pea tendril salad- not that it doesn't taste great, but it lacks originality and variety. In saying that, the food is fabulous. I recommend 3 small plates per person- filling, and you get to try everything. The guacamole is a must as is the eggplant special (although not really very Mexican!)
Sangria was delicious but well and truly over priced at $38 for a fairly small pitcher. $30 would have been far more reasonable.
Overall amazing vibes, good service and great food. Would come back again easily.
The seafood dishes were a refreshing take on Mexican cuisine. The other dishes on the tasting menu were great. The wine list would suit most palates. Would recommend.
Think Mexican food, and personally it brings to mind images of sloppy tomato and cheese laden plates, devoid of an interest or personality. Just some beans, beef mince, lots of red and yellow stuff and that’s about it (other than maybe a bit of pickled jalapeno, cause that makes everything Mexican, right?). This is certainly a hangover from an initial experience with Mexican cuisine more years ago than I care to acknowledge, but its been a tough one to shake.
I don't like to just copy and paste my reviews but I think this place deserves a "cheers" on all media platforms so here we are.
There is a giant billboard above this place that reads:

What a great vibe this place has...especially being a Friday night it was very busy. Decor and the music playing was very cool and the food was great too. Excellent service from our waitress and she was more than helpful when we asked which dishes she recommended. Overall it was a great experience and something different from the norm.
The restaurant has a funky cool Melbourne vibe to it, which I liked - even the random Dj tucked away in the corner. the floor staff were friendly and our first waiter was pleasant and attentive enough though I did take issue with her seemingly directing most of her correspondence w/my partner (eye contact, explanations/recommendations of dishes etc) and that bugged me slightly. Later on, another waiter, a blonde woman, checked in on us knowing we were waiting on food that had not arrived and made sure to see what was the hold up.
We did request that the nachos come out first which never happened, instead all our meals came out together making our small narrow table for two overcrowded and awkward to eat.
I started off ordering a drink - "Agua Fresca" - which consisted of mango, pineapple, watermelon and I choose the option to add tequila.
To me, I couldn't taste the tequila. I wasn't sure it had been added to my drink to begin with but the woman looking after my partner and I, promptly took my drink away and replaced it with another. I could taste the tequila now. Whilst I finished the drink, I didn't care for it. It tasted like pineapple juice and nothing more.
As for the food...
Simply put the duck nachos were surpreme! I wanted to order another bowl. And the soft shell crab soft taco was equally great. I had other dishes which were standard fare, nothing to write home about but I wasn't complaining.
In all honestly, the abovementioned duck and soft shell crab dishes were so good that next time I'm in Adelaide I plan a return visit just to order them again.
Great spot!
I had a soft shell taco to start, and we shared beef and prawn enchiladas for main, with a side of sweet potato chips. All were delicious. The sweet potato chips are a must order!
Service was very fast and friendly.
Will definitely be returning.
We spent valentines night here, food was great, interesting combinations and full of flavour! We loved the atmosphere in there and just an amazing staff! So friendly and helpful, and very prepared on the menu and for every question we had. Beautiful cocktails.. just had a great night! Definitely going back again soon!!
I recently dined here with a couple of friends, and we shared a variety of dishes.
I'm not sure if this is considered authentic Mexican cuisine, but the food was different to tex mex I've sampled, and overall we enjoyed it. The tacos had good flavour, particularly the fish one from their specials board. Desserts were sickly sweet.
For the quantity of food, I found the price a bit steep. We were given vouchers for a return visit, so I may be tempted to come back and give them another go.

I finally made it to Mexican Society, and I’m so glad I did. I started with a mojito, the perfect drink to accompany spicy food. I would have liked it slightly sweeter (and fizzy) but otherwise it hit the spot. First dish was a soft shell crab taco ($11.50 each) and it was a hard one to beat. The lime jalapeno mayo was hot, but it matched the outside-crispy, inside-tender crab meat perfectly. The fresh salsa balanced the dish and we could have happily eaten these all night. Next up was the kingfish ceviche ($15.90), which had a fabulous flavour combo of macadamias, pomegranate and
An end of year work dinner, a busy restaurant in the silly season - plenty of opportunity for a restaurant to make mistakes and not show their best side. Mexican Society however performed brilliantly - great service and brilliant food. Six people so we selected one of the banquet options. Excellent modern Mexican and good sized serves .... we ended up taking some home with us. Looking forward to returning away from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season and explore the menu more fully!
Oh great cocktails too zzzz
Great food and drink. Very av service. We loved the duck nachos and the salad (unknown salad but it tasted like an HJs whooper!!). Will be back! Only loosing marks because of service!
Blame it on my experience of eating Mexican food mostly at Tex Amex restaurant chains, but I found the serving portions to be small. The food was really good and tasty but bite size portions leave you wanting for more. The Veg Nachos are a great pick and guacamole preparations are good too.
Excellent food, good drinks, great service. My only comment is that it can be a bit loud and as a result I would not recommend this place as a date dinner location! Other than that, brilliant food!
We were not terribly hungry, but if we didn’t find something for dinner, we might end of starving before bedtime. A leisurely walk led us to Mexican Society of Chinatown‘s window, where we studied the menu from behind the glass. “Hmmm… tacos might be nice.”. “Oh! They have sweet potato fries!”

A busy winters night the restaurant was packed but the wait staff were exceptionally attentive and the food was sensational ... that mexi-chinese fusion is on point!
I'd heard pretty positive things about Mexican Society and was not disappointed. We went in a group of four and took the waitress' advice and went for the banquet. The food was excellent - extremely fresh and flavoursome with a great mix of dishes. The service was fantastic with the staff all very friendly and attentive. We were extremely happy with our experience and will definitely be back!
We had an amazing experience for dinner here Saturday night. We had the early seating, and our group of ten was lucky enough to have the whole small side of the restaurant to ourselves. We had the pleasure of having Damien serve our group and as we were the only group at that time, he made an extra effort to spend time talking through the food and drink choices with us and ordered us a custom banquet. The food was delightful and filling if a bit on the small serving side. Between the personable service, good food and drink recommendations this was an extremely pleasurable night out and would recommend it to anyone.
Can't rate this place highly enough! We didn't have a booking but walked in on Sunday night and were seated immediately. The staff throughout were really accommodating and attentive. We ordered the guacamole, two elotes, some beef tostadas and a few different tacos and all the food was fantastic. The soft shell crab taco was especially delish.
Noticed a few complaints about serving size below but we didn't have an issue with that at all. The tacos are the same size as at most of the other good Mexican places in Adelaide, including Hispanic mechanic, Lucky lupitas and Maiz and mezcal so we weren't disappointed.
The fit out of Mexican Society is also beautifully done, next time we head there we'll be hanging out a bit longer to try some of their cocktails! Thanks for the great experience
Mexican Society at 140 Gouger St, Adelaide (in Chinatown) is a busy and popular Mexcican/Asian fusion restaurant and we decided to meet some friends there for a girls Friday fun night out. The girls from Tempting Palates arrived a little too early which was not a problem as we were seated at the bar and able to drink cocktails while we waited for the others.
Great mix of food for sharing tapas style wiuld friends. Would suggest the spring rolls and tacos.. especially the duck spring roll and metball taco and pork belly taco. Very cool interior and friendly staff.
This is a great place to come if you wanna try something new and different - that being a tasty fusion of Mexican and Asian cuisine. It has a great menu with some really exciting and innovative dishes, including some deliciously creative tacos and salads. There are also some interesting desserts on offer as well. The service was fantastic. Our servers were friendly, helpful and very attentive. The food came out in less than 10 minutes and every dish was fantastic. The only downside is that depending on how many sides you order it can end up a little on the pricey side - but it's great quality food and if you don't mind springing about $30-$40 for dinner and drinks I would highly recommend this place!
Good food and a great night around the bar area. We didn't have a booking for five around 7:30pm. Got offered a seat in the bar area on stools which worked out great. This area was quieter than the main restaurant. Damien who served us was excellent in setting out our share plate dinner up. We basically let him bring his favourite plates and they were tasty. Damien made sure that one of our table guest who is vegetarian got some great dishes too. Great food and drinks all round.
Highlights - corn, pork belly and prawn taco
We will be back to try some more dishes and some tacos
Finally had a chance to dine at Mexican Society. I went during an off peak time, so we had the whole restaurant to ourselves, but make no mistake at night this place is packed!
There are plenary of seating inside and out of Mexican Society, including both large table and stool seating, though I'm not a fan of stools myself. Overall the place had a nice modern feeling with a touch of class. I am particularly quite fond of the black plates they use, as most Mexican foods and especially a fusion of Chinese/Mexican, the foods is very vibrant in colour, the black plates really makes the food pop!
For starters, we ordered the pork belly which came in 2 pieces. The sauce which coated the pork belly was light and tangy and mixed well with the flavours of the pork belly. The pork itself was cooked fantastically where it literally melts.
For mains, had the Mister Lee & Jose, which is chicken breasts that are water bagged cooked and coated in a peanut base sauce. This is the first time eating chicken cooked in this way, and I am very pleased as the flavours were literally busting from the chicken. The sauce was absolute heaven! A mixture of peanut and spice.. It was on point.
Overall, the foods was extremely well made and I am really pleased either my experience with Mexican Chinese fusion. I will definitely be back to try other foods on their menu.
My friend & I decided to try this new addition to the Gouger Street gastronomic scene. The friendly staff were inviting & pleasant. The tapas style food was excellent & the wine list interesting with a good range of South American wines. Tracy's advice on food & wine selection was very much appreciated. A great experience & will definitely be back.
The Mexican Society of Chinatown, located on busy Gouger Street, brings an interesting fusion of Chinese and Mexican food. Have now visited this place for dinner on four occasions. It appears consistently busy with a good atmosphere and cool fit-out.
The food menu includes small, medium and large plates that are all best when shared. Personally, I would ignore the larger plates and order more of the small and medium ones. The larger plates, whilst good, are a little overpriced. Plus, the smaller ones are better for sharing. Everything else is reasonably priced. The drinks menu is also good.
Service is friendly and efficient, although can be somewhat uncoordinated, in that orders will be taken by different staff throughout the night. Eg. last visit, we were asked for first drinks order three times. Also, when ordering be sure to order food as you want it - otherwise it will all come out at once.
On our most recent visit were ordered chicken wings, tuna corn tortillas, pork belly and duck spring rolls. These four dishes were enough for two people - with room for dessert afterwards. Chicken wings, although always messy, were the best dish of the night, followed closely by the tuna. Other food was also great, but would skip the pork belly next time. In all, would return and recommend to others.
Heading out with the girls one Friday night, we booked into Mexican Society of Chinatown (the old Mesa Lunga) to check out the new Mexican fusion offering on the Gouger Street block. Being a massive fan of Mexican food and of Walter Ventura's restaurateur work (such as Ruby Red Flamingo, Gin Long Canteen, Singapore House & Hispanic Mechanic), I (Amanda) couldn't wait to experience this new creation for myself. Arriving for our 8:15pm sitting we are swiftly seated at a long wide communal table which is colourfully tiled. The whole interior is now much more brightly coloured and decorated which gives a festive and happy vibe - perfect for our fun girls night out!
I had heard mixed reviews about this place so was hesitant to try it. The service was superb and the food was really nice. I enjoyed the corn, ribs and salads. The fish was a bit of a let down but my friends seemed to have enjoyed it, different tastes I guess. I'm certain you'll find something you'd enjoy here!
What a pleasant surprise. I wasn't sure what to think when I heard that Mesa Lunga was being replaced but I was quite impressed. A latish dinner on a Sunday evening.
The menu is sizeable so we opted for the testing menu. You savour many dishes and don't need to make too many individual decisions. A versatile selection of meat and veg dishes that left us super stuffed!
The service was also very attentive and efficient. Probably the only minus was the fact that the kitchen closes at 9pm. This is somewhat early and it affected our dining experience as they tried to quickly pump out all the dishes. We had to ask the waiting stuff to slow the kitchen down.
Aside from that, I highly recommend Mexican Society of Chinatown and can't wait to come back again to try the dishes in slow time :)
Very pretty ambience and great service. Had the tostada which were corn crisps with amazing chipotle ,guacamole and fresh yellow fin tuna. I would have eaten more if they were not so pricy. We also had tacos. Would recommend the shrimp a la diabla taco. The lobster was average. We then had the crispy pork ribs. Its a must try. Very well marinated but on the drier side.
I really enjoyed my experience at the Mexican Society. The Mexican / Chinese thing is inspired, but looking back on it now, wasn’t that obvious to me. I think I was just won over by the lovely presentation of the food – everything was so colourful and wonderfully presented. Thankfully the taste lives up to the visuals and my group of dinners scarfed everything down.
December 22, 2015 By She Said What in Food & Drink, Uncategorized Tags: Adelaide, dinner spot, food, mexican food, review Leave a comment. We all know you can’t go wrong with a trip to Gouger Street to satisfy your Asian food cravings. But how does the ‘eat street’ fare when you have yourself the Mexican munchies? We decided to go and see ‘wassup’ and test out one of the new hot spots on Gouger Street, Mexican Society of Chinatown.
Great food. Went for a work dinner, we had banquet 2. So much food, was great. They even gave us complimentary meal vouchers for next time. Will go again.
Good friendly service, Mandarin chicken, creative menu, mandarin chicken, killer cocktails and grate environment, mandarin chicken.
Oh and I liked the mandarin chicken.
I visited this restaurant for lunch last week and it was pumping- fun, lively atmosphere and super friendly staff.
The food was delicious and came out very quickly. The menu seems to be predominantly Mexican with a hint of Chinese influence-I loved the chicken taco from the specials and the duck salad- yum. Will be back with a bigger group to taste some more.
Had an amazing experience here the other night with my wife. Attentive staff. A very lively and fun place. We started off at the bar which was good. It gave us a chance to ask about the place and get a couple of cold drinks in before the main event. The staff suggested we share, so we had the chicken and the pork belly taco which were both amazing!! we then shared the duck salad which was very good. The crispy duck was so juicy. We finished off by trying both the pork and beef ribs. We will be having both of them again :)
Waiters all seemed a bit clueless about food and if our orders were ever actually coming. The Mexican style foods (tostada, tortilla, cervix he) were great, but very dissapointed in the duck salad, and duck spring rolls, both boring and bland. The bar staff were rude. We asked for a few tastes of their wines as they were labels we had never encountered before. When paying $10-14 for a glass we like to be sure it will be enjoyable and this is a common and accepted practise for most places serving wines. In the end the pay basically asked us to 'just order the glass' as no tastes were available. Ruined our night... Also the 'ambiance' was destroyed by noise, doof doof music way to loud to chat.... Hard work. Wouldn't return or recommend
I normally don't post anything but ate here last night and had such a wonderful dining experience. To start the design is super cool and very atmospheric, definitely a fresh and totally new look for adelaide. We had a large table and tried most of the menu :) the favourite were debatable but probably the duck spring roll, beef ribs and chicken wings. Hoping to go back soon and will definitely be recommending to my friends.
New casual dining Mexican restaurant at China town open by the same owner of lucky lupitas and Hispanic mechanic. This restaurant serves a fusion of Mexican and Chinese dishes. Services provided by the waiters and waitresses were good, they r very friendly but sometimes struggling to provide more info about the dishes. Food in general was served at a consistent pace until the very end bit, we waited ages and I mean ages for the vanilla ice cream. Staffs were quite apologetic. To start the night, there are complementary prawn crackers. Mexican restaurant, u must have elote (corn) for entree. I'm a huge fan of corn, the corn was very well seasoned but I might prefer a different cheese compare to the one they use nonetheless, it is still an enjoyable corn. Cured white fish was very refreshing with a touch of lemon squeeze on it. Main : the tomato rice served was not well seasoned, there's not much flavour on the rice itself. When eat with other dishes, it is not too bad. Fish of the day would be one of the best main. Fish was cook to perfection and the sauce served was perfect to go along with. Salads were serve as side, it is a nice to have some chips and orange slices in the salad. Overall, the banquet is a very good value to go with, food was not over the top but it is good enough. dessert would probably be better off something else rather than just a scoop of vanilla ice cream which was served very late.
Ordered a pork belly, fish and chicken, food overall was good with a good mix of flavours. Something you really notice is the beautiful color scheme of the ambiance. We were not happy with the location of our table but it was compensated with excellent service by our tall spanish waitress. Will definitely recommend...
After reading all of the bizarre reviews on here, we decided to go in for a Sunday lunch.
I actually can't fault the place. Food was really flavoursome and fresh. We had a load of small plates and shared.
Service was excellent. Lovely hospitable staff with genuine smiles. Such a rarity in Adelaide.
Decor lost half a star because it's a bit one dimensional (but who cares really).
Great beers, great food, great staff!
Will definitely be back.
Mexican Society of Chinatown is a new establishment opened by the same owners of Hispanic Mechanic. It is meant to be a Mexican & Chinese fusion restaurant, which is an interesting concept. A group of us came here last Saturday night for a birthday dinner. There were two types of banquet available, one was AUD$38.88 per person and the other one was AUD$58.88 per person.
Went to the newly opened Mexican Society for a friend's birthday dinner and had the $40 banquet, we were all really happy with the food ! Super tasty, good sizes and range too, service was spot on
Would definately go back for another dinner!
The Mexican Society of Chinatown - a new establishment replacing Mesa Lunga and definitely shining bright. Kudos on the variety because I am so pleased with everything I've had so far with this new eatery, which I can definitely see myself coming back to repeatedly. The staff were friendly even though it was packed, the service was impeccable, on point and no delay occurred with the food. The menu definitely has variety embodying both the decadent and sophisticated fusion of Chinese - Mexican and some traditional Mexican dishes. Inspiring and new.The Mexican Society of Chinatown is one of the best places to grab a drink and just enjoy that warm Mexican vibe.
A friend and I visited this newly opened restaurant last night without knowing much about it, but we were pleasantly surprised by what it had to offer.
Food:
Living pretty close to Gouger St, I am always happy to welcome restaurants that offer some variety to the area and the menu at Mexican Society of Chinatown certainly does that. It’s an interesting blend of Mexican with Asian influences. We ever so slightly over-ordered (better safe than sorry!) but the menu is hard to gauge in terms of quantity and sizes. Complementary prawn crackers are delivered to the table promptly and they are not your standard Chinatown prawn crackers, so you are forewarned that you’re in for an interesting meal. They are crisp and seasoned well and a good place to start. We then ordered some small dishes - the tuna tostada, duck spring rolls, and a taco each – I had the mushroom and eggplant taco. We really enjoyed all of the smaller courses and they are much more interesting and unique than the brief descriptions I have given above, but it’s best to check them out for yourself. We then continued with the pork belly and the sliders which were both also great, the pork belly was particularly tender. We then finished with the Mister Lee and José chicken thighs and the lamb which is a curry of sorts. The lamb was probably the only dish that we didn’t really get into, not to say that it was bad, it was certainly different but there were some flavours in there that just weren’t working together that well. Despite being really full we ordered a Mex Ping Pong bowl each, which is under the cocktail list, but wasn’t really alcoholic or liquefied enough to call a cocktail – probably more of a dessert. We also had a couple of great Mexican beers – Rio Bravo Lager and Day of the Dead Pale Ale. Overall it was a really enjoyable meal and the prices were very reasonable.
Service:
All of the staff were friendly and helpful and a good balance between casual and professional. Our waitress was fantastic and seemed really settled in - which you don’t often get when a new place pops up.
Ambience:
The fitout is clean, simple and fresh – but I only had a brief look because it was too nice a night not to sit out the front and eat on Gouger St. Great location.
Dish to look out for:
Whilst pretty much all of the dishes were equally enjoyable and nothing really stood out taste-wise, I was most intrigued by the spring rolls which were almost like a deep fried soft taco.
Some say that every restaurant should have a good story line. The story behind the Mexican Society of Chinatown is that a group of Mexicans immigrated to Australia and moved into Adelaide’s Chinatown area. The result is Mexican food with Asian influences as reflected on their menu. All the dishes that end in 88 cents (8 being the lucky number in Asian culture) have Asian ingredients of some sort. Anybody that has been to Hispanic Mechanic will see some similarities with the menu offerings, but I’m told the preparation is different.
