Long time fan of the coffee here but have also had breakfast and lunch here. The food is consistently good and there are always interesting menu items but of course, the "go to" items are the house made pastries. Now open after work for drinks I had a chance to experience after work life at HD Eatery. The cocktails were excellent. Fantastic staff.
Flavour, flavour, flavour! Incredible venue that warrants your attention when you visit Adelaide - a little off the beaten track, you'll need to keep your eyes open to find this hidden gem in the side-streets (labelled "H D Eatery" at the door). Well worth the search for terrific coffee and amazing main courses - kudos to the staff for being able to flexibly satisfy a hungry man's appetite during the half-hour switch-over between breakfast and lunch menus - a sincere thank you!
Had brekky there last week with my hubby and it was amazing. Love the coffee and food. Burger tasted very unique and the yogurt with nuts was nice and filling. Was too full to get pastry and desert but definitely will be on my list next time I visit!

I think I just stumbled across my new favourite city lunch eatery, off the beaten track, the food is sublime. Can't wait to try everything else.
We’re from Melbourne. We stumbled upon this place looking fir interesting places to brunch over Easter when much if the cafes were closed. And boy were we pleased we took the effort to find this place. the outside of the cafe was rather uninspired and so we were unsure of stepping in. There was also no signage at the time. But Once you stepped into this warm space, all apprehensions melted away. The welcome was warm and friendly, a little quirky. It was difficult to choose from the menu, as there were many we wanted to try. But what we ordered, we loved. The food was spot on. Interesting use of ingredients on a plate, fresh, colourful, unapologetic in serving up food that they really loved to eat. Modern, fresh, healthy. Cakes looked so very tempting. And the coffee, the coffee was to DIE for! only suggestion would be to possibly have a high chair? But this really depends on their regular clientele.
A real hidden gem in the heart of Adelaide city. The breakfast, pastries and coffee here are simply delightful. Of all the breakfast dishes we’ve ordered, the one which hit all the senses and was beautifully done is the Smashing Pumpkins. Totally recommend it. Another tip is if you can, walk there. Parking can be tricky as most of the street parking nearby is 1 hour or 30 minutes parks. Note: I have attached the updated menu here as the one on Zomato seems outdated.
We enjoyed the ambience of the cafe. it’s cosy and relaxing to stay for a cop of nice coffee. I tried the bread with curry sauce, it was nice ! I will come back for croissants next time :)
Generous serving sizes. I had the green machine. It was nice, but there was too much of a spice added to the spinach which was too overpowering.Small menu if you don't want the stock standard bacon and eggs. They also make their own tarts and pastries on site. Coffee was served with a honey sachet rather than sugar, I had never seen this before, and loved this quirk.
A top notch coffee shop in the city centre, hidden down a laneway it was a great find! Small cosy interior comprised of bar tables and stools. Will come again.
It is easy to found this place on Zomato but not so easy to find it especially on a Saturday morning when all the shops around it are closed. We almost gave up but I decided to have one more try. Nice environment nice food!
Such a cute little cafe tucked away on a side street in Adelaide.
Their staff have always been super lovely and they do food and hot chocolate here that's to die for.
Ranging a little on the pricey side but man it's so worth it.
Who needs a big menu when everything on offer is imaginative, generous and value for money? Great to see something different on the Adelaide breakfast scene. My hash cakes were delicious, complemented with mushrooms, haloumi, eggs and dukkah. The takeaway pastries also look fresh and tasty.
Not really a hidden gem but it needs to be discovered! Ambience built on an adapted 1970's era tenancy and with and window added. I like the soft lime colour and just the feel of hip. Coffee comes with depth and service is steady. Understated grace.
Very handsome indeed.
Nice little place tucked away off Gawler Place. Only located this gem on my way to sushi train. Decided to have a workday lunch here.
Coffee was great!
Food was different but good different. Some nice flavours in my pulled beef salad. But couldn't put my finger or tongue on what made it so delicious.
Service was hipster. Hipster good though.
Overall great place and will be coming back to try the other food options.
Caring professional will go again. Went this morning for coffee and they made a small error with my coffee I didn't complain but they realize mistake, replaced my coffee and also gave me a beautiful danish. Completely unnecessary but good business and such a delicious danish. I had already checked them out and thought what a great idea they have large danishes and mini ones so you don't feel so guilty indulging. Well worth the indulgence I will be back
Hidden in an alleyway, this busy cafe with a gorgeous rustic look has already stolen my heart.
Today was my first time coming here and the interior already blew me away! I absolutely love the decor, especially the wooden tables and chairs (which I would love in my house!). There is a great variety of food you can choose from for lunch but I decided to get the special which was Beef & Peppercorn Pie w/ salad for $12.50. I couldn't believe how cheap and tasty it was! The beef was so tender and you could tell that it had been slow cooked for some time. I believe the pastry for the pie was handmade and baked as it was of a lovely golden colour and was literally just so so tasty.
My two friends ordered lunch off the menu and their food just looked equally as tasty!
Service was okay but the food was on point!

Watching Handsome and the Duchess (H&D) evolve over the past 18 months since our first visit (March 2015 review - A Big Name To Live Up To), I (Amanda) decided it was time to give H&D another go for lunch. After the less than impressive Vietnamese beef salad I had on my first visit, I was keen to try something from the much larger menu now available. Not only has the menu expanded, so has the venue, with extra seating and now with table bookings available it makes a great option when catching up with friends or arranging business lunches or coffee dates. The coffee is still the great standard it was on our first visit and we are actually daily coffee takeaway regulars.
Took away The Super Bowl (Nourishing super mix packed with seeds and additional friends served on seasonal fruit/yoghurt blend - $14.90). I think the description was a little misleading, because what I received was more like a (rather runny, btw) yoghurt smoothie with a sprinkle of this "super mix" as a topping.
Taste wise, it was alright. It's not as sweet as your typical smoothie bowl, so that was a nice change. The bowl was beautifully presented, with a strawberry in the middle that was carved/sliced into a flower. Definitely very aesthetically pleasing.
The cabinet at the front is filled with tempting baked goods; took me a lot to resist them! The service at this cafe is exceptional. The guy who served me at the counter was very friendly and professional. I'll return, but I'll try another dish.
The Bacon Buff - a really good balance of flavours between sweet and salty, nice bread, well cooked bacon, and a perfectly fried egg with soft yolk.
It's hidden down an alley so you have to go out of your way to find it, but worth going to for a cafe meal at lunchtime.
Had a breakfast date here a few weeks ago, having heard good things about the place. I had the handsome hash which was topped with smoked salmon, avocado, grilled haloumi, sautéed cherry tomatoes, a poached egg and several other ingredients. It was very filling and the different elements complemented each other in flavour and texture. Handsome and the Duchess also do an amazing espresso, and my companion commented that the filtered coffee was lovely too. A great place for breakfast or brunch, with a great coffee selection!
What a cute little find, a cafe that shows the Adelaide Cafe scene has almost caught up to Sydney and Melbourne. Hidden down a alley way, I wouldn't have found it without a recommendation from a friend. We only ordered coffees, but I'm dying to go back and try there food menu next time I'm in Adelaide
Handsome and the Duchess is a tiny coffee shop/cafe tucked away in a side street off Gawler Place (McHenry Street, if you must know). No real signage to direct your attention to it, it's the ideal place for hipsters to gather around and support.
But that would also be entirely unfair, as it is a place with some real character. I have not tried the coffee from there as yet, but will have to change this in the near future.
Thier cakes are brilliant and the pie, which changes from time to time, is a triumph with some of the best puff pastry we have ever had, anywhere.
A great place to track down, as little places like this add so much to the city and its vibrancy.
I will suggested that they need to put Bigger sign out side or at the street. I passed the cafe at the first time tho 😆
The placed is packed but really different in good way. They have many options of cakes and pastries. Love their decoration. Unfortunately the kitchen closed at 2 pm when I went there around 3 pm :(
The brownies is tasty and the presentation is good as well. Good to know that there is a good place to visit around city :)
Fantastic gem of a cafe! The pastries are amazing (e.g. olive & salami brioche, creamy chicken pie), the sandwiches are colourful and fresh, the soups are fantastic (creamy mushroom, spicy pumpkin), and today they had 5 different salads. And desserts.. Real (not fake coloured!) macaroons the size of your fist! Hot chocolate, made from hot milk and real melted chocolate! The coffee is delicious too, rich and almost spicy.
It's tiny though, so be prepared to share your table with other hungry foodies.
What the?! Where the heck did this place come from?? So hard to find but so worth the effort. Who knew signage was so overrated? On first walking in it felt like I had been transported to one of those rocking little Melbourne laneway coffee shops. And this place rocks with the best. The whole experience blew my mind. Seriously. The coffee is firmly Adelaide top 5 material. The pastry selection is killer. The lunch options are cutting edge with an Asian influence. The service was assured and fast. Handsome and the Duchess I am glad I found you despite your efforts to hide yourself away from the world.
Hard to find, but so worth it even just to see the fitout. Tucked down a laneway off Gawler Place with no street signage only adds to the charm
Great coffee from a really passionate owner (Handsome) whose wife (The Duchess) is a few metres away turning out some of the best pastries in Adelaide.
They do lunch as well and have a couple of tables inside if you want to eat in.
Friendly service, great product, excellent atmosphere. I know where I get my coffee from.
The coffee here is a standout, which is hard considering the other good coffee places nearby.
Owner is a great guy, the food is fantastic. It's definitely worth hunting this place down.
Heavenly almond croissant!. Wow... this is by far the best almond croissant I've ever had in my entire life. I've been raving on about it since my friend gave it to me. Might be one of my newest food haunt. ^_^
Can't wait to try their other pastries. ^_^
This is a hidden gem. It's.... This is a hidden gem.
It's a little place full of great atmosphere, super friendly staff and great coffee.
They also have amazing food - they bake all their own pastries and sweet treat treats on the premises. I can highly recommend the savoury brioche!
Nice new coffee spot. A welcome addition to the gawler place precinct. A good espresso, friendly, smiling service and room for a few friends for a light lunch or sweet nibbles.
Hidden away down a side street, this cafe is worth the effort to find! What a great atmosphere with funky fittings, glass shop front, fantastic company and friendly service. Highly recommend the hummus on toast - basic but so damn good! A huge range of baked savoury and sweet treats. Of course I also had to have a croissant - so good!
Handsome and the Duchess have been long time favourites for coffee, pastries and recently breakfast.
The Husband and Wife duo are two of the most sweetest people I've come by. Their hard work, passion efforts is represented in the quality coffee and pastries.
I went to check it out (Handsome and The Duchess), it’s one of the few cafes that are opened on a Saturday which makes it really good for kick ons after a big night out.
They brew beans from Monastery Coffee, like Argo. I was skeptical about their coffee, but when they served my latte in a glass cup instead of a mug I knew I was in for a treat, and it was a treat; their coffee is tasty, I rate it a lot.
Excellent service, due to Carona virus and limitations were very apologetic about reduced menu and waiting on stock delivery. There was no need as the breakfast they made was 1st class and service was friendly. Have been stuck in SA for nine weeks ans wish I found this place earlier. Support your local cafes.
This is one of those little out of the place cafes you kind of have to be in the know to even know of its existence. The cafe itself is very small and cosy and normally quite busy which just shows you how popular it is and can get loud very fast. The coffee is perfect and there is a great selection of cakes and croissants, I ordered the Pink Lady for breakfast and admittedly it is the best French Toast I have ever had, covered with pears, almonds and a sprinkling of pomegranate even the lemon cream was one of those things you just can't get enough of, it is one of those breakfasts you'll be dreaming about for days. Definitely recommend and I'll be back again!
Wafting from behind an eclectic jumble of vintage kitchen gadgets is the sweet caramelly aroma of pastries baking. Mix that with freshly ground quality Elementary coffee beans and you know you’re already onto a winner. Scotty on the tools is a rare artisan who seamlessly churns out flawless coffee. And he’s as quiet as a mouse! The volume he’s burning through is impressive for such unannounced consistent perfection.
This place is a hidden gem. You won’t regret it.
After hearing good things and not to mention the numerous rave reviews I thought it was high time I gave this cafe a crack. The place was rocking when I ordered my coffee. It has that industrial feel to it which I rather like. The service was good (if a little slow) and the coffee wasn't bad. The lad who brought it over noticed he'd spilt coffee into the saucer and offered to make a new coffee for me which was a nice touch but I'm not that precious :) I'd certainly visit again and judging by the number of punters a lot of others already do!
Great little spot, exquisite quick lunches, e.g. this delicious vegetable sandwich full of delectable relish, beetroot, roasted capsicum, sprouts and mayonnaise
