Review The Jerusalem Sheshkabab House - Adelaide

Harshi Karam
Simple delicious food for a reasonable price. I had the standard mixed platter which came with minced beef koftas, falafels, hummus, pita and salad. It was no fuss, simple food but so flavourful. The hummus and pita were perfect. The falafels were my favourite. Its a dimly lit hole in the wall between two sheesha shops. The interior gives you a little bit of an authentic vibe. Perfect place to stop by for a good meal followed by sheesha. Will definitely return for more! (Just know that payment my card isn't accepted)

Consistently delicious, quick food delivery, and the entire place is run by one chef and one waiter on the floor. Best falafel in adelaide. Best beans and rice in adelaide. Best hummus in adelaide. Best baklava. Best everything! Do yourself a favour and come het and get a bargain banquet for $25 with free BYO!

Our group had the banquet... The food came out so fast that there was barely any room left on the table for all the dishes. The flavours were fantastic. Casual dining and great atmosphere.
David Brooks
Had banquet, meat tasty but rest a bit bland. Disapointed with service as after 12 of us paid $25 a head we decided to make room for waiting diners and finish our drinks on the outside tables. We were then rudely told by several staff to move along without any explanation. I guess they already had our money so we were no longer welcome.

Went for a girls night dinner before a show...Good food at good prices (enough to take home afterwards.) We took a bottle of wine as it's BYO, we were given plastic cups to use and our corkage was then waived with our banquet package deal. Will be returning!

I was really looking forward to eating here again but I think I was expecting too much from nostalgia. Jerusalem was the first Lebanese restaurant I ever went to back 40 years ago and it and Quiet Waters became an institution for us Uni students. After all that time the overall standard and availablity of Lebanese food has increased dramatically and Jerusalem is just average now and not special. I still liked it, but nothing to rave about anymore.

Food was delicious! Big servings size, we got the banquet and was treated at $25 each we left rolling out of there! It’s not much on appearance but food delivered
Karan Bambacas
Talked into going the banquet which was $27 per head. Underwhelmed with only one sausage dish, deep fried falafel and green beans only? Was awaiting on the meat when we kindly asked was there more, he replied no! Total value cheaper when ordered on menu! BEWARE!

I have been here several times before but not for many years. Had raved about it to my wife. It didn’t let me down. The decor is still a bit off putting, but it really wouldn’t be Jerusalem without the tented ceiling and wooden benches. Get past that and you are treated to some of the best Middle Eastern food around. The falafel is still the best I have had anywhere, and the houmous is also magnificent. The desserts were to die for. The service was friendly and efficient. I shouldn’t have had the Lebanese coffee though; not if I wanted to sleep that night.

Amazing food, amazing prices.
Our waiter was wonderfully helpful and the service was quick. I was in a group of three and we opted for the banquet, there wasn't a dish we didn't enjoy. It is BYO only, but that makes it even more affordable. The interior hasn't really changed since I first went to Jerusalem as a child, but it's kitschy and warms my heart!

What an unassuming place to dine... I've passed by this place a million times and not once did it strike me to try it but I'm glad I did. We recently dined here in a big group and the food was amazing .... Cheap and tasty.. portions are small but for 8 bucks can you really complain! Service is fantastic... Also can U find anywhere in Adelaide banquets for 20 or 30 bucks per person ?

Went here for an early dinner for the first time. I heard great things and read rave reviews so I had high hopes.
I was very disappointed with the whole evening.

We ordered off the menu and got the cauliflower (which was rock hard and the sauce tasted sour) super over priced for 5 small pieces of cauliflower.
The babagsnoush was not good at all. It was bland, had a bad texture and looked pretty poor.

We ordered the tabouli (which was quite nice) but for the price which was around $10.50 not worth it.
The lentils and rice dish was ok. Not bad flavours, very simple though also overpriced.

We ordered the beans on special which were ok but I make this dish at home and is dead easy to make and this one lacked flavour.

We also ordered falafel, this never came out but we were charged for it!
I don't normally ever write bad reviews, but I had to in this instance. I will not go back here

Okay location a bit awkward and decor quite bad and Dingy but once you get past these let downs and you eat the food you forget it all. The flavours and quality of food is fantastic! Will always return to this place. Even my parents have been eating here for 15 + Year’s!

The BEST middle eastern flavours in town. Like, THE best.
I have never had yummier hommus in my life. Babaganoush was outstanding, bread crispy, the falafel delicious and the chicken kebab so tender that it melts in your mouth.
Top it all off with grape juice and turkish delight and it's a winner.

The only downside is the service - the dude practically had no manners and even dropped a fork on my lap, staining my shirt and saying 'it's fine'. Good thing the food is outstanding.

The food at Jerusalem Sheshkebab House (JSH) is excellent value and it’s served fast, but, most importantly, it’s delicious and nutritious. No doubt the multitude of people, who have eaten at JSH, during the past 40 odd years, will agree but, sadly, many of us live in other parts of the country, or, worse still, in other countries, so we dream of a day when JSH is franchised far and wide. I could eat JSH food every day!

Best Okra Dish ever!! Delicious kebabs and the freshest tabouli! I always go to this place when i am in Adelaide! Whenever I take someone with me for their first time, they always impressed. This is proper, traditional Middle Eastern Food that you need to try!!
TresHungry
The restaurant has a bit of an unusual set up; there 4 seater diner-style booths for people dining in, but if you're after takeaway, you walk to the back of the restaurant where there is a tiiiny window that you order from. I took away a tub of hummus ($8.00). I prefer my hummus a little thicker so it's easier to scoop up with dip vehicles, but it was delicious nonetheless.

The staff who served me was very well-mannered, and there was another person wiping down tables who was extremely friendly and chatted to me while I waited for my takeaway (which was ready in a minute or so).

Keen to return to have a full meal here.
Helen Liv
Did not live up to the hype. It was quiet on a Friday night, the waiter wasn't helpful/refused to provide any recommendations and the servings were small. Was cheap though.

Jerusalem Sheshkabab House has a very good reputation for serving no-frills, authentic Middle-Eastern food.

Located on Hindley street, the restaurant is surrounded by some of Adelaide's seedier nightclubs and bars. The place inside is, lets say, unchanged in 30 years. It's dark, there's uncomfortable seats, unenthused service and no alcohol - BYO only. However, regular patrons say the food makes up for all these.

I've been to Jerusalem Sheshkabab House a couple times, and I know regulars who love the place, but I'm less convinced that it's worth celebrating. The hummus and falafel are particularly good, but most of the food is no better than elsewhere. Moreover, the inconsistent service and little things like plastic cups for wine can't be overlooked and need to be fixed.

Others mightn't agree, but this place, I think, is highly overrated. Worth visiting for some dishes, but nothing to go out of your way for.
Ally Sinclair
Honestly it's just not all that good. The service, even when I was expecting it to bad managed to surprise me with how rude someone could be! I really don't understand the need for such hostility in response to "do you have any cups with ice?" So don't go in there wanting a smile and civilised behaviour - because you're not going to get that. Otherwise the food was alright. It was on the better side for Adelaide but for anywhere else in the world below par is an adequate description. I wouldn't give this place too much attention if I was you.
Sridhar Rajagopal
Economical, fresh meat, great flavouring and very hospitable chef.

This is very small traditional place which offers kebabs and rolls with some pita bread and freshly made hummus.
Carry cash when you visiting does not accept cards.
Adrian Porcaro
An old Adelaide icon and one of the best value restaurants around. I've dined at Jerusalem numerous times over many years and have never been disappointed.

Food:
Don't bother ordering anything other than the banquet, anything else is inefficient in time and money. The banquet consists of you picking a dollar figure between $20-30 (depending on how hungry you are) and then food coming out in a flurry 10 minutes later. The food is all delicious and for this price you will struggle to find better value - particularly when you can BYO drinks for free on banquets over $22.

Service:
The service is not overly friendly, but it's not bad either. They get the job done - orders are taken as soon as you're ready and the food comes out very promptly. If you consciously don't think about what's going on out the back you will enjoy the experience a lot more.

Ambience:
Whatever the opposite of glamorous is - that is how you would describe the decor here. It's so simple and nonchalant that you can't help but feel relaxed and let your hair down when you're there. It's perfect for a chilled catch up with a group of friends.

Of the 10 people who ate here on Friday night, 7 of us got extreme food poisoning. 10/10 would never return again. Clearly horrific hygiene.
Emily W
I ate here recently with a large group (around 13 people). The food was fine, but unremarkable. The most disappointing part of the $25 a head "banquet" was that our entire group left hungry. I will not return.
Laura
One of the best restaurants in Adelaide! Amazing, homestyle food. No messing around! BYO drinks. Awesome banquet menu and the best felafel.
Zoe L
Delicious food, vegan options (ask the waiter), haven't updated furniture/decor in the 26 years that I've been dining here but makes it part of the experience. Hands down best felafel. Highly recommend.
Fooburger
Abusive staff. Seemed promising at first.. a tasty vegetarian "platter" for two only to find at the end the staff there are incredibly rude, abusive and deceptive! We were charged double for a platter for two, I'm sorry but a platter is for more than one person to share.. $40 for a little bit of hummus, pita bread, falafel balls and tabouli is not a good deal. So we left this dining experience feeling cheated and physically repulsed by the vile mannered gargoyle hiding behind his little hole-in-the-wall.
Glenles
RIP OFF. Advised to have the $25 per head menu plenty of food for hungry gents, biggest rip off, plastic cups to drink out of coke not cold waiter had no manner at all, to top it off they dont take credit card for payment. never again worst restaurant i have been to, WILL NOT recommend to anyone unless you want a quick snack, plastic cups and have cash.

A grest Thursday dinner for 7. We had to call 6 times but eventually got through and booked a table for 7 at 7.
As one of the first ones there we thought it a bit quiet for a Thursday night, but it gave us time to absorb the atmosphere. Bright orange Laminex bench tables and a ceiling of draped sails made for an interesting feel, dub stepped with a groovy Lebanese music mix. Yes, bring your own glasses if plastic cups don't do it for you.
The food was great. Salads all tasted fresh, the meats were very tender and all 7 of us ate to the max.
In the meantime a reasonable crowd half filled the place. At a bit over $20 a head we all thought it was good value and priced right. The TAFE U-Park was close and cheap too.
M And M
Don't rate it. Many other places serve much better middle eastern food in adelaide with much better service.
Hummus was average and the main meals had were nothing special.
After eating in the real Jerusalem, I don't expect places in adelaide to match it but this is not worthy of its reputation. Wouldn't eat here again.

Have been eating at the Jerusalem since my early 20's now in my late 50's Always outstanding .
Fantastic fare .
Jess
Very disappointed. Food was great, however treatment from management was disgusting. They told me to leave and I told them the sign said they didn't close for another half hour, and they told me I was too stupid to read the sign because I was a woman.
Food Mad
My partner graduated university yesterday 18/3/14.As her and her family have been coming here for over 20 years we thought will go for tea only to find it closed when the sign said open at 5.30pm we waited for 15mins n clearly nothing happening on the inside,we rang n no answer.
Finally got an answering machine,I nice message was left.
Not happy..

Rip Off. I know the title might catch you off guard. The dishes if ordered individually are good and great value for money. However we had the misfortune of trying for a banquet option as suggested by one of the staff (we were a group of 10). Going by his recommendation that the quantity would be enough for us, we chose that option after specifying that only one amongst our group was a vegetarian. When we were finally served we were surprised to find mostly vegetarian dishes with a few plates of non-veg items being served. We also realised that the so called banquet gave us probably one plate per person with 2 kebabs each. We might as well could have placed an a-la-carte order and would have eaten more paying the same money....all of us felt cheated, will never visit again

Best place. I've been going to this place for years and the food is always delicious! It looks a little scary when you go in but the hummus and falafels cannot be matched. They also have lots of vegetarian options. I highly recommend this place! One of those little finds that you'll always go back to.

Disappointed. We went with 10 work colleagues for a farewell dinner. The head waiter recommended the platter at $25 a head and that he would keep bringing the food out. The food was not enough by any means even though it tasted great, he brought out a few plates of potatoes, mix veggies, rice and pakoras. There was two small plates of kebabs, we each got to eat one tiny piece of kebab We thought the waiter would bring more kebabs out but turned out - that was all the food we were getting. It seemed like we were clearly ripped off and not given our money's worth. Everyone was still hungry and we left to go somewhere else. Such a disappointed and sad to see this happen.

Very hit and miss. I've been here 4 times and have always got banquets. Twice we've had a great meal with a lot if dishes to try and twice we've been royally screwed.

The last time I went there my partner and I got a $25 per head banquet and it was very light on dishes. We are not large people, but we felt that 5 dishes, which consisted of hummus, tabouli, falafels, rice with lentils and 4 mince beef patties was very stingey.

Not going there again.
Coco
Visited the Jerusalem for dinner with friends and ordered several dishes all equally as tasty as the next. We enjoyed each meal served and especially accompanied by their delish "grape juice"! Will definitely return soon.

What's not to like about the Jerusalem? Great food, cheap as, and excellent for vegans. Half the time they don't charge the (ridiculously cheap) corkage! Love it every time.
Hungry In Hawthorn
Always fabulous. Eat here with work colleagues a few times a year and it is always delicious. We often just let him bring out whatever he wants and it is reliably good. Its great to see the ladies in the kitchen and so cheap.

I dropped in to this place last night to share an inexpensive banquet with my partner. It was a cheap and cheerful experience -- tasty food, great value for money, polite and quick service, dishevelled ambience. Recommended for a tasty, no-frills meal.

Yum yum! Delicious. We had great service we also got a complementary dish. Don't be put off by the not so flash interior. Food was amazing and very cheap.

Decades of Doing it Right. I recall going to the Jerusalem when my wife was pregnant and our son is now a doctor with a daughter of his own. We're still going. Nothing ever changes except the prices: the decor in grotty orange, the bench tables, the old worn glasses and certainly not the food. This is assuredly the best, or one of the best, places to eat Middle Eastern food in Adelaide. The cabbage rolls, the stuffed potatoes, the cauliflower in sauce, the kofta, the hummus ... this is the place to stuff yourself. Take your own drink or if you like drink their grape juice.
People react to the service in different ways. It's true they make almost a fetish of being brisk, brusque and 'bang it on the table'. They're often very busy. It's never bothered us and has nothing to do with the quality of the food. A great institution.
Michael
Such a winner. Love going here with mates, you enter, guy keeps it simple, gives you a main, hummus, pita, and drink for $20 - served in less than five minutes and tastes amazing!! Keep going back!

Great food, right price. So it's a little shabby, but the food more than made up for it. Jerusalem's a great place to share an authentic Middle Eastern meal at the right price. Great kebabs, hommous and baba ghanoush. There's a hookah and dessert bar next door.
Julz
Service was abrupt, although food was really good... a little high in price for Lebanese food, but I suppose that's Adelaide + Lack of choice = We can charge hefty prices...$8 for hommus... that's a joke. But ok, the hommus was really good.
MR T
The Real Deal. Great food and comical service is what makes this place stand out from the crowd. Been going here for 20 years and its the best middle eastern in Adelaide. Get down there!
Tracey
Excellent. Had many delicious meals at Jerusalem when I lived in Adelaide, the food is fantastic, in fact the best lebanese I have ever had. Love the hommus, tabouli, felafel, and other vego dishes even though I am not vegetarian. Sure the waiters are a bit gruff and the ambience is not fine dining but I still love the place and try to go there whenever I am in Adelaide. Have many happy memories of eating there with my late brother as it was one of his favourites too.

Loyal customer. The jerusalem sheshkebab house has been one of my favourite restaurants and will be until the day i die. i have been going there for the past 30 years. the service is magnificent and the food is superb and is a great value for money. anyone who says otherwise doesnt appreciate middle eastern food and such a cultural experience. the amount of food you get for what you pay is extremely generous. in other restaurants you pay double for smaller portions. those who complain about not getting enough food should go out more often. dont complain about this restaurant. its lucky we even have a lebanese/middle eastern restaurant in adelaide. i recommend this to place to all my friends and family and they all agree on this experience. so go there and dont listen to cheap talk by undesirables.
Melody Kate
LOVE it. This place has some of the nicest, affordable food in Adelaide, Felafels are great, hommus and tabouli is the best ive ever had, this is a great place for vegos as there is great amount of variety. A previous poster has mentioned that the "parsley salad"(tabouli) and "Hommus" is not a mean however I disagree, as this with the bread always fills me up! the service is brisk and not what you would expect in a more expensive eatery however its all part of the fun. highly reccomended.
Tina Brown
STAY FAR AWAY!!!. If you want to get ripped right off then this would be the place for you. First off the waiter is the rudest guy ever who would get mad at us when asking about the menu. We ended up getting the $20 per person banquet. We where thinking we would actually get a meal for that price and all we got where two small plates share between us. When asked if that was all the food that was coming the guy got mad at us and tried to tell us that the sauce and the parsley salad was a meal. Sorry but the salad was so small and the sauce is not a meal!
I will never go to this place again and will tell as many people as I can to stay away!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Danielle Frankish
Just eat.... The food is wonderful, authentic and cheap and if you go for a banquet with byo wine you will leave completely fullfilld.

Try to avoid even looking at the hairy, overweight, sweaty rude waiter.... it's almost enough to put you off the food... almost....

Good food doesn't make up for poor service. Have always enjoyed the fabulous food here which has certainly always made up for the less than impressive service. Not anymore, good food can only go so far and the extremely poor and very rude service I've had the last three times I've been is enough. These people want to be in the entertainment book but then require you to provide the voucher upfront before ordering - sounds to me like they're going to give you less food or poor quality, why else do they need to know before the bill is tallied like most places? They once even changed my bill to a higher amount after i gave them my entertainment card voucher! The good food can no longer make up for the poor service. Jerusalem is off my favourites list, don't care how good their falafels are!

This Restraunt is delicious, tasty, cosy and just overall very middle eastern. I've had the best time and the best food when I visited and i'm not gonna stop. I suggest for every1 out there to check it out and maybe even book the function and get the belly dancer you'd have the time of your life. I give it 10 /10 and Youll agree once you step through there doors and get the food onbyour tongue
Peter
Make sure you go here. Been going here for 16 years - amazing food - especially the babaganoush..... YUM! My all time fav place to go in Adelaide.
Kitty Bootleg
Cheap, cheerfull, and great flavours. Don't go for the atmosphere (loud, rushed at times and with plastic wine cups), but the food is worth it and the prices still stuck in the seventies. Take along your own wine and take advantage of the cheap corkage, but beware of the waiters body odour!

Jerusalem House is an Adelaide institution that has been around for many decades. Located on Hindley Street, this place is renown for their cheap good food and bad service.
ThealphabetofFood
J is for Jerusalem House – a icon on Hindley St that has been around for many many years. Except I’ve never been to it until this year. My colleague took a few of us after finding out another colleague and I had never experienced the deliciousness of the Jerusalem House falafel. After experiencing a taste of the amazing flavours as we were only limited to a lunch-time, I had to come back! Warning – Do not be afraid of the draping roofs, the plastic-y benches, plastic cups and gruff but lovely service staff. The decor and furniture is not exactly state of the art, but it is cosy and gives you a very middle eastern feel. I especially like the photograph of a camel on the wall. So upon my second trip with another friend, we proceeded to order a mini-feast – with complimentary hummus from the owner. We ordered: Chilli cauliflower – deliciously creamy and flavoured. It was recommended by my colleague and did not disappoint! Falafel – crispy crunchy outside texture, with a fresh mixture of g

Jerusalem used to be a hidden gem in Adelaide's 'seedy' Hindley street...that was many years ago, but word has since spread about this Middle Eastern restaurant. Now everyone knows where to go if you want to get some authentic garlic breath!

We arrived just after 1pm and the place was pretty empty. Under the watchful eye of a friendly camel, Dad and I seated ourselves in a small booth close to the entrance. I grabbed some menus from the

Further West along Hindley Street is another middle eastern restaurant called Jerusalem. It also has been established a long time. The tent effect ceiling is still there and but the fabric of tent does seemed to have changed over the years. This restaurant provides good tasting cheap kebabs, kaftas and felafel with out much pretence about the service.
