You think you've had Lebanese food, right?

Hi foodies! I don't know what to say. I thought I knew what Lebanese food was like. I'd always treated Lebanese food with indifference. My thoughts were always, "Yeah, it's like Greek food but with less flavour." Sorry, I say it like it is and that's the way I felt about it. *shrugs shoulders* Then I was invited to The Rustic Fig. My friends on Instagram raved about it and once again I was polite but treated the food with indifference. The truth being, I had never eaten REAL Lebanese food before. I was later to find out, I ate a westernised version of Lebanese food which sadly was cheapened down with "fillers".

Such a beautiful little cafe serving delicious Lebanese food. We can’t thank the owners enough for their patience and excellent services too. We have three young kids and they all enjoyed the food immensely!!! We can’t be grateful enough for this little gem nested within the eastern suburbs.

Arriving at The Rustic Fig Cafe, one fine winter Saturday, I (Amanda) did not have a clue how my experience was about to unfold.  Entering the cafe, I could see that the use of 'rustic' in the cafe's name was a perfect fit for this small venue with alternating coloured chairs, a slab of stonework at the counter, a splash of green on the wall and some pops of orange throughout.  Settling into the rustic decor, we meet Erica, who owns the cafe with her husband Naji, who is also the cook.  Erica and Naji migrated to Adelaide with their 2 children, 3 years ago after living in Lebanon for 19 years.  And this is when our Rustic Fig experience truly began...

Fantastic coffee (and I'm fussy),  and great service.  The owners, Naji and Erica, are lovely and very engaging. (in my  (un)biased opinion as I knew them before they started this new venture).    On my latest visit I tried to Manoushi Zaatar, both with the creamy strained yoghurt only and with the additional fresh topping of tomato, olives and mint.  Both were super tasty and different - I am not familiar with Lebanese food.   On my previous visit I've had tea - great selection available, I went for mint - and some of the amazing  and unusual sweet items they have on offer.  I genuinely think it's well worth a visit.

A few weeks ago, I was watching this place being set up as we were next door at the Vietnamese place getting lunch and of course, my inner foodie, got the best of me and I asked the owner what type of food will be on the menu? He replied, Lebanese, oh nice, I thought, not too many of those around the Eastern suburbs. Headed out there today for lunch to try it out.

As I entered this nice simply decorated café, I was greeted by a very softly spoken waitress and found my pew. As I perused the menu, I did think to myself, this is reasonably extensive, considering there are only about 30 seats?

I ordered the Chicken Kafta with minced chicken, spices, parsley, onion, mozzarella cheese grilled inside Lebanese bread, garnished with tomatoes, onion and a yoghurt tahini dressing ($10.90). Personally, this dish needed a lot more of everything, more filling, couldn’t taste or see any mozzarella and would have been nice to have more garnish on top, more tomato, more onion and much more tahini dressing, the dish becomes dry as you run out of these ingredients.

I followed this up with a Lebanese dessert called Moughley, interesting? This is made with rice flour, caraway seeds, coconut, pistachios and pine nuts. When I had my first mouthful, bammo with the caraway, really hits, but then as you continue to eat this, the flavours become quite pleasant, so I kinda liked it and it’s not very sweet.

There is definitely one thing missing in this nice new establishment, some chatter from the staff, any chatter! All of them (4) were deadly silent the whole time and barely said boo. As I approached the counter, I really wanted to be asked how my meal was, so I could give them a bit of feedback, not happening peeps! The waitress whispers the amount owing, I paid and left.

I will probably return to try some more items on this menu, as they are not expensive and it would be interesting to see how the other meals are in comparison with the one I had. They are new, so a second chance is in order!

Thanks Team…..

Food can wait however I want to start with the owner themselves, so loving, kind and so passionate about their food… I can go there again and again just to meet them and know more stories about their food. I got to know how to make Lebanese coffee and secret of Delicious Baklava ❤️ We took Lebanese chicken Tawook, Mushroom Kibbee, Hummus - Pita… Food is really authentic and you can tell made with so much love and passion… Baklava is just on point not too sweet and not too soggy and the flavour of rose syrup for the Lebanese touch (that’s what we learned from the owner) 🥰

Delicious Lebanese breakfast or lunch. Rather limited in lunch choice: chicken tawook or Falafel. I had chicken tawook wrap with toasted Lebanese bread. First place I found fig bread, which was nice.

We popped into this lovely cafe after a hike and were so glad that we did! Friendly service and delicious coffee, but wait - there’s more! The food was absolutely sensational - we ordered a heap and every plate was wiped clean. Prepared fresh with good ingredients and made by hand - loved it

I usually go for beef burgers but I had to try the falafel burger. Simply the best falafel I've ever had. Crispy and tasty with hommus and fatoush salad. Amazing.

Came across this unique cafe whilst having to kill time prior to work meeting and I loved it so much that I’ll definitely be going back even though I’m not from that area. I loved the food, authentic and so tasty. Service was friendly and prompt. Very nice coffee and really cool vibe!
