Went there to take a bite of lunch. We came there at 1315, and the place is still packed full. We have to wait for 15 minutes to be seated. We order their hainan chicken rice, for me with additional roast duck. order came within 10 minutes, the portion was quite big. The rice is a bit overcooked, but the chicken was alright. Unfortunately the roast duck is a bit chewy. Nonetheless, for those who want no frills eating with budget in mind, this place is definitely the place that you wanted to be a regular patron.
I’m singaporean so trust me when I say that this char kuey teow is pretty authentic!! Flavours are balanced and you get a good amount of sinful pork lard disperse pretty evenly throughout. It’s more savoury than what you get in Singapore (it’s usually sweetish but this one is almost not at all sweet - maybe more closely resembling the Malaysian rendition) but there is good wok hei (if you’re passionate about Asian food, you should know what this is - wok hei basically refers to the charred flavour that results from contact with the fire when a dish is fried in a wok). The soya bean milk with grass jelly is pretty authentic too (the price is not LOL).
My oh my.. what a hidden treasure. If it’s not because it was my last day in Adelaide I might have this everyday. This place is actually quite hidden in Renaissance Arcade. I am so glad I found it. Will definitely be in my eat list if I ever return to Adelaide.
Now, this place serve an authentic traditional Malaysian Hainanese Chckrn rice and roast duck. I haven’t had this authentic and traditional taste Malaysian Hainanese chicken rice and roast duck for ages. The moment I bite into them I felt as in being transported back to my childhood. Thank you for keeping the authentic-ness of the flavour.
Hainan chicken is a must-try here. Only $10.50 for a massive portion. You can tell it'll be good when the dish comes with the proper chicken flavoured rice. Also unlike other hainan chicken dishes I've tried, this chicken is bathed in a light soy which intermingles with the chicken oil and tastes amazing when you drizzle it over the rice.
Good Malaysian “street food”. Inexpensive and tasty. Very generous serving sizes. Definitely not a fancy restaurant but a great place for a quick lunch. Recommended.
Generous servings and good food here. Love the combination roast and Hainan Chicken Rice here. The combination rice meats that are not so good is the duck as it is very bony.
Lovely authentic asian food, I’m a regular customer and would definitely recommend their Ho Fun noodles and the Hainanese Chicken Rice. Sooo good!! I’ve never found anywhere else that serves food just like this, the portions are quite large so you definitely get more than what you paid for. 👍🏻
This place has been in my bucket list to try as I love Asian food. Don't expect fancy place because it is not. You queue up to order and they will give you your table number and then you wait for your food to arrive. Make sure you have cash because they don't take any other way of payment. I had the combination roast on tossed noodles and the Mister had hainanese chicken. The portions were massive for the price you pay. For my combination, I think I will stick with roast duck and crispy pork next time. Mister was happy with his chicken, they made the sauce the way he liked it. I shall definitely come back to try more from their menu!
NanYang Café is always busy and there is a line out the door very early on. The reason is because the food is amazing! We had the char kuay teow and the combination roast meats with noodles. Both serves were generous and delicious. Great value. Great service.
Get here early on a weekday for lunch! The line up can get quite long by midday. I came here after reading the reviews of their Laksa. After 7 years living in Singapore and 2 years back home with no luck finding decent Laksa so far I thought I would give it a try. Awesome! They happily substituted the egg noodles for vermicelli for me. The broth was not too creamy - just right! And medium spicy was perfect for me as I have a good tolerance to chilli (& the heat level is Asian level - very happy to know this!!). I shall be back - with family & colleagues ☺️)
Reasonable Malaysian food. Would recommend their char kuey teow and hokkien noodles. Service however could be improved. There is one staff member who is always courteous. His service cannot be flawed however the rest of them really need to buck up.
I love places like this. Very clear signage everywhere about what's on offer, staff constantly on the move bringing dishes, removing completed plates, wiping surfaces and smiling if they catch your eye. It's very clear that this is a CASH ONLY venue, and even at 2.30pm-ish, the place was a good two-thirds full of diners.
Today I ordered the lor bak and char hor fun. Whenever I see either on a menu anywhere I just have to order them. The lor bak here is tasty enough, and in Nanyang was presented with a porky/gravy sauce on the side (never had it before and it was pretty good). This dish was missing water chestnuts through the mix. It's a generous serve (two long sliced rolls).
The cha hor fun was precisely what I'd hoped for. It's warm silky noodles, combined with the slippery egg gravy were SO comforting. The chicken, prawns, fish cake and greens were generously spread throughout. I'm here for travel, but now that I've found this place I know I will try to get a few more meals in before I go home. YUM!
Pretty good Malaysian food. This place is always full and it's patrons are mostly Asian - this is a good sign. Their portions are big - you could probably share if you are a petite eater. Cash only though.
char kuey teow, hor fan, curry laksa, hainan chicken rice..all good, but their nasi lemak..I am in love with. Loved their sambal on nasi lemak..like the ones I had in Malaysia. Reasonably price.
August 16, 2016 By She Said What in Food & Drink Tags: Adelaide, food, Love, lunch, review Leave a comment. On a fateful Monday lunch I found myself strolling through the Renaissance Arcade on the hunt for a tasty bite. I’d heard some whispers about an epic Asian café called NanYang Café, known for its wok-tossed noodles and Chinese roast meats. So when I spotted the hectic huddle of peeps forming ’round the café’s entrance like the front of a festival stage, I just knew I had to have what they were all having.
Probably the most authentic food you could get from a Malaysian cafe/restaurant. Literally my only go-to place nowadays as it's super cheap, convenient, and delicious!
These are photos collated from my various experiences there.
Nanyang Cafe, my favorite Malaysian cafe!
Probably the only place that serves authentic Malaysian Char Kuey Teow! Nasi lemak and char hor fun were really good too. We're visiting almost weekly now and it's amazing!
This has got to be my favourite Malaysian restaurant although I don't come here as much as I'd like due to the locality of it. Having said that Nanyang is as authentic as you can get to Malaysian food in Adelaide. There's plenty of Msian favourites to choose from their extensive menu in this hawker-style/canteen setup eatery. Today we had the 'Beef Hor Fun' (stir fried flat rice noodles with beef and egg gravy) which was good except that it was a bit too starchy. The char kuar teow (stir fried flat noodles) was average. Prices are reasonable and service is okay. Overall this place is good relative to other Msian restaurants in Adelaide and would highly recommend.
You can't go wrong with this little gem, the line up out the door on a Monday at 1pm must mean something, excellent hawker style Malaysian food, cheap prices, fast service, excellent menu and the BEST char kway teow
in all of Adelaide...
One of my regular work day lunch places. Always busy so you know it's good! Cheap, big serves and the food is delicious. I reckon they've go the best char kway teow in Adelaide, and their other dishes are also great. Good cheap Malaysian/Chinese food and I'll keep coming back for lunch!
Massive portions, cheap and fast. Awesome malaysian hawker food. I've been going to them for 8 years (since high school) and they have always satisfied my cravings for malaysian hawker goodness. EVERYTHING ON THEIR MENU IS DELICIOUS. My favourites are salred fish fried meehoon, penang har mee, dried tossed noodles with roast pork and CKT!
The line out the door says it all.
Hainan chicken (although they used to debone it and now don't which is a bummer)
Char Kway Teo, extra hot, with the little pieces of pork crackle tossed through..
And Soup - who can go past a Roast Pork Roast Duck combination noodle soup - and more importantly why would you!
Loh-bak 5 bucks and always a chopstick fight to the death over the crispy tail end!
After a short trip away to Tasmania I found myself hankering for some good BBQ Pork and Crispy Skin Pork. I love Tasmania but I think in Adelaide we are very lucky with the diverse food and cuisines we have here. I would regularly go to NanYang’s when I was at uni, not only was the joint close so you could quickly duck in for a feed in between lectures but it was fast, cheap and deeelish, what more can a uni student ask for?
Everytime I'm in Adelaide I will try to come here at least once especially for the Lor Bak. It's the best in Adelaide and up there compared with other cities. Very reasonably priced too at $5.00. Their other dishes such as Hainanese Chicken Rice, Wat Tan Hor and anything with their Roast Pork is good too. Just make sure you get there very early before lunch or late after lunch as they are always packed with a long queue.
Authentic Asian food. Asian food that is legit and yummy!
Favourite dish here is the roast duct with rice!!!
Prices are average but definitely worth paying for!
Would definitely come back!
Authentic Malaysian Hawker food. Favourite lunch spot.
Got my attention!. Went here for the first time today - had the roast chicken with noodle soup.
I have to say that I was satisfied - a decent sized portion and very well roasted chicken with delicious crispy skin. Well balanced flavour.
The waitstaff roster switches between the extremes of very nice and quite rude. But I will be returning for sure - the menu looks like it has depth and there are many things I want to try! - the laksa for example, and the kway teow, and other roast meat dishes!
Great roasts. My favourite place for Malaysian food in Adelaide. My partner and I come here at least once a week. He likes their char ho fun and I love their roast duck, chicken, and bbg pork served with either rice, noodle soup, or tossed noodles. My partner's Malaysian, so if he likes it, it must be good. I'm not sure which staff members the other reviews are talking about, but we have never had a bad experience here, in fact the guy that usually takes our order is really friendly. The other places I've gone to in Adelaide for roast chicken or duck or bbq pork just do not compare to Nan Yang's.
Not a bad place. Average service, some times the rice is too dry. However, I keep coming back to this place for lunch and I don't even know why.
Nanyang vs Mamak Corner. I ordered Roti Canai for the kids and Nasi Lemak for myself. Quite good value for money, but a bit more expensive than Mamak Corner. There was only one curry dip for the kid's Roti (in Mamak's there is usually 2). The Nasi Lemak is more "lemak" than Mamak's and the serve is very big (of course since it is comparable to Nasi Bandung Campur at Mamak's). Overal very tasty. will return because there's lots of variety and there's still lots more other dishes to try. Note: the curry dip is very chilli!
Good value, good variety. I frequently visit this shop- once every week/fortnight.
My fav. would be the beef / seafood horfun- very authentic taste and well priced. Char Kue Teow is ok. The laksa can get be a little inconsistent - occasionally too salty.
Give it a try, hopefully you'll find something you like.
Worth a try. We ate here the other day and ordered Char Kway Teow and Char Hor Fun. Both dishes were delicious and were authentic local Malaysian cuisine. I thought there were a lot of charred bits in the kway Teow, but I supposed that's how the dish is meant to be. We also had their Lor Bak. Whilst we thought it was tasty, it was over fried resulting in the dish being too dry. Will not order this in the future. Meanwhile, we had the tossed noodles with roasted duck and pork. There is nothing to shout about this particular dish - we have tasted better roasted meat in Adelaide and in Malaysia! The duck was not succulent, it was dry and tough. Finally, for drinks we had their Teh Tarik which we thought was diluted and too sweet which was a shame. In regards to their service, it was "rough" - like most Asian eateries we have been to. Etiquette or manners are almost non-existent in Chinese/Asian restaurants, generally speaking. Having said all that, we would return in the near future if we crave for Malaysian food. This cafe is definitely a must try for all who love Malaysian food. :)
Great Malaysian Hawker food. Thank god for Nanyang Café - I am originally from Penang and don't go back there a lot and this place really does keep a lot of my Penang hawker food cravings in check! Try the sar hor fun, char kway teoy or Hainan Chicken Rice - "ho chiak" :)
Rotiiiiiiiiii. One of the Best Roti you can get in ADL.
Delish!. This place is so yummy, but a word of warning, if you don't like waiting, get there a little early, before the lunch set roars in, or a little later once most have returned to the office. I always get there about 11.30 and am seated promptly. I've had the dry wanton noodles with crispy pork and duck, the hor fun, kway teow and the chicken rice. They were all very tasty. This is a place i keep going back to repeatedly, for cheap and tasty eats. Well worth the visit.
Most authentic Malaysian food in town!. I'm from Malaysia. Have tasted all the Malaysian cuisine restaurant in Adelaide. Finally I found Nanyang cafe. This is a place I visit very very often. I even requested the owner to cook some of the dishes that I have been craving for so long and not in the menu. Their dishes are the most authentic Malaysian (hawker style) food.
Kuey teow is the best!. The kuey teow here is as authentic as it gets with the 'lap cheong' and the crunchy pork bits. It may not be everyone's taste but I can guarantee this is what you would get if you order this in Malaysia. There are so many other dishes I would like to try but I just can't go past the kuey teow. One day, maybe one day I will get to the others...
Better than Penang Hawkers. I swore by Penang, their lobak and kwetiau were immaculate. Until a friend introduced me to Nanyang Cafe. Malaysian does not come more authentic. Try the crispy combination egg noodles, looks awful tastes awesome. Also give the teh tarik a go. This being written, I heard a rumour that Penang are feeling the pain and are going to refurbish their establishment and are going to improve their menu. To be continued.
Let’s be honest, coffee – espresso coffee in particular – is the drnk of choice in Australia. And there are some very good coffee places that we go to....But sometimes the flood of coffee just gets too much and a cup of tea is the thing. And be honest – too many places think shoving a tea bag in a cup and pouring on boiling water is the answer....Nan Yang Cafe Only recently opened in a CBD shopping mall this Malaysian place is pretty damn good. And it has form – the owners used to run another Malaysian restaurant that was beloved by uni studednts for the tasty food and cheap prices...they’re back, serving roti chanai and mee goreng and all sorts of Malay goodies.
I finally made it down to Nan Yang for lunch again the other day and boy was it delish! This little gem of a cheap eat is tucked away in the Renaissance arcade and is always bustling with people and chatter around about lunch time. However if you don’t fancy lining up for a table, try and time your lunch visit a little earlier, about 11.30am or a little after maybe about 1.30pm.

Nanyang Cafe in the Renaissance Arcade is always busy, always. From 11am to 2pm, there’s a line, sometimes out the door, with lots of Uni students and business folk, lining up to get a table and some delicious noodles and roast meat.
I'm glad we finally got to try this place. I think it's better than Penang Hawker and will definitely be coming back here if I get a chance to be in the city on a weekday. Can't wait to try their Char kuey teow as recommended by a few people I know. It's a fast and cheap eat, they have the drinks to match as well with all the teh ais, teh tarik, milo ais, cham (milk coffee + tea), limau ais etc.
