Review Tangritah Uyghur Shishkebab Restaurant - Adelaide

Eugenio Rubio
The place is really nice so you can have a pleasant time there. The staff works good and were kind. The food is delicious, this place serves food from tajikistan which gives a plus because of the taste. They have different plates, i ordered fried noodles with beef and were so tasty, also, i ordered lamb kebabs which were fabulous. The size of the small order is enough for one person. They have big plates which i think are for two or more people.

A very tasty Uyghur delicacy. We had lamb and chicken skewers, flat noodles with fried chicken and hot and sour potato. The portion is quite big, we had a large one, enough for 3-4 people.

The best point it is halal restaurant, and the food is fine, it is just our taste doesn’t match with the dishes. Good environment and friend service so 5/5 in this area.

Tried the lamb rice for lunch. It was excellent! The other food options look amazing. Great flavours and family feel. Will definitely come back again.

Had the whole place to ourselves for lunch! Was like travelling to another country in your lunch-break without the hassle of airports etc. Loved the team work of the family in the kitchen. Was like visiting family. Will definitely go back. Great food!

This is a very family friendly restaurant and has a relaxed family vibe. Plenty of booth style seating which feels nice and cosy. The staff are very polite and friendly. The food is great and well priced. The Ayran milk drink is sweet and tasty, certainly worth trying and something a bit different for some. The hand made noodles are awesome as are the spicy fried green beans (great flavour balance). The Dumplings are also tasty as is the fried lamb and bread. Always happy to visit and never disappointed. I would certainly recommend a visit.

Wow, lamb and chicken wing charcoal grilled skewers were out of this world! Egg and chives and spicy noodles perfect accompaniments.

Handmade noodle is delicious, but the fried lamb dumplings is super salty. Took too long to get my food, when i was the 3rd table at that time, even the later guests received their order earlier than me lol.

Food is okay if you get it. Ordered 4 dishes and 3 came out within the hour and no mention of the fourth. Waitress returns around 30 minutes later and tells us "no lamb pie" and walks off.. Another table sitting nearby to us, had the same thing happen to them and they told the waitress this is very bad and they wouldn't be returning. The waitress bluntly says "it's fine if you don't return"..... I'm not sure who is running this joint but customer service is important! We will not be back because even though the food was okay, being told a dish would not come out for no reason is bad. Imagine we ordered two dishes and would be told this? Do we just not eat then?

Poor customer service.

Our food took an hour and a half to be served. We ordered rice, chicken kebabs, and lamb kebabs. Our rice was served first with nothing to eat it with, and when the kebabs came, they were undercooked and still bloody, as seen in the pictures. On top of that, they gave us one kebab first, and then three after some time, leading us to think they were rushing since we had been there a while. However, they did apologise in the end and didn’t let us pay as we didn’t touch the food. This is just our recent experience, it may be better for others :).

Probably one of the better Uygur restaurants where food comes out hot, fresh and delicious. We got a bit carried away ordering and couldn’t stop eating the delicious food. If you haven’t tried uyghur cuisine this place will open your mind, tastebuds and convert you into an uyghur food lover!

First time for me to try Uyghur food, and found Tangritah's food outstanding! I have returned now and find that my favorite is the Cumin Lamb, although the Laghman is also quite good. And their yoghurt drink is perhaps my favorite drink anywhere!

The new look to this restaurant is really working in favour for this place. Had lunch there today and everything we ordered was amazing and didn’t take long to arrive at our table.

For anyone who has had a bad experience here in the past, I say give this place another go...they have made major improvements. You will not be disappointed! Another tip I have is to go at a time when you know it won’t be super busy. This is a traditional Uyghur restaurant, so many of the dishes are made from scratch, hence the longer wait times, especially when it’s a full house. The handmade noodles are amazing! Thank me later.

I have been there twice in the last week and have had a pleasant experience both times. The food was amazing and the customer service was great! Very helpful staff who adjusted our orders exactly how we wanted it. Would 100% recommend!

Yeah, its small, customer service is not great, most of the time takes more than 30min to get ur order.....hey! its a small family business run buy two old couple and most of their food is handmade.
wanna better service? go somewhere expensive, wanna get ur order in 5min? go KFC😁
16 bucks for hand pulled noodle, 2.5 bucks for a shish kebab.
Mate, this place definitely worth to try.

We haven't been elsewhere for their type of food but if you are someone who care about customer service then stay away from this hell hole, there is zero of that here. Everyone in the place is nice except the Angry grumpy mama and her little princess. One of their specialties is long hours waiting for your food, mixed up orders and being moved and shoo away constantly for new customers. One of the "best" things ever happened to us was, the daughter perhaps, told us "you keep your 50c, I want the note". And just now, the lady yelled to our face in Chinese as well as mumbling high pitch broken english "This place is busy, you've been sitting here for 2 hours", while in fact we were almost asleep waiting for our food to arrive up to an hour. Trust me, your place is not the kind of place I want to stay for long. Bottom line, if waiting for ages for your food to arrive then got yelled in the face for staying too long then this place is for you. By the way I don't think they care about these super shit reviews anw so let's just consider this as entertaining ourselves

This place needs very patient customers. Came in at 7pm and ordered 1 side and 1 main. Waited till 8 pm only got the cold salad served but it was not tasty. Very regret to choose this place at a starving time. More than a hour on waiting a normal chicken dish was a joke. This place is not big but the cooking and serving is too slow and service was provided in a wrong way. The management
really needs to improve.

SKIP THIS RESTAURANT IF YOU'RE HUNGRY.
THIS RESTAURANT DOESN'T OPERATE ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVE BASIS.
Went there on a Friday night (big mistake) and they had a table of 12 coming so they were quite stressed. Understandable. Full house too.
They actually tried to chase away a table of 3 when new customers came in but the 3 stood their ground and said they have not finished. I could clearly see there was still food on their plates.
This was my first visit. So I sat there waiting for the menu when the big fat lady asked what we wanted. We said the menu. And she grumpily pointed, "isn't that the menu", and handed us one. She then said, "over here it is self-service".
WELL EXCUUUUUSEEEEEEE ME for not knowing on my first visit!!!!
The waitress who took our order was friendly but she got nagged at by the big fat lady for spending too much time taking the orders at the table for 12.
I heard the big lady tell the waitress to get the orders from all tables so that she can start cooking dishes which are similar for every table.
So what they do is, they gather the orders, find the dishes with the most orders and cook them.
We ordered items 12 and 14 from the menu.
We waited an hour.
A couple who came after we've waited an hour got their food before we got ours.
Because they ordered what most people ordered - item 10 from the menu and the kebabs.
They were so embarassed that they got to eat first that they apologized.
This restaurant doesn't operate on a first come first serve basis.
This review is not about the food quality, because we never got to taste the food. We left, hungry and angry, and headed to Ding Hao - got served within 10 minutes.

Customer service is just shit. They act like u r annoying them and if they could kick u out. Disappointed. The old couple is quite ok inspire of not Knowing English but it's their daughter who will never happy on u

Gr8 food, unpleasant service.

Lamb kebabs, spicy fried noodle with lamb and veggies, lamb soup, uyghur style lamb dumps soup and the sweet yoghurt drink are all bomb.

Can get real biz during din din.

Tip: don't waste the homemade chilli.
Gail
Gave the rating if 4 for the taste and quality of the lamb and chicken skewers, the lamb dumplings and the sweet yoghurt drink. But service gets a 2 rating because it is slow and there usually is only one server. The food takes ages to come out, sadly because it's done with TLC. It's THAT good and smoky and barbecuey, folks! Meats slowly grilled over charcoal. Finger licking good.

The food here is just YUCKS! You can find so much better Uyghur in Adelaide. So no, this is not 'the best' in Adelaide. Far from it. The horrible thing about this place aside from the rude and appaling customer service (constantly rude and aggressive lady boss) and the ugly and depressing dining room, is the fact that the kitchen is filthy and disgusting. Their toilet floor is wet and so is their kitchen. It's just gross. The health inspectors really need to have a look at this place. Can't imagine how the food is actually handled in there. YUCKS. Stay away!
My favourite restaurant - sure it might not look like much and the staff might not speak much english but its damn tasty.

Personal favourites are the lamb kebabs and the lamb buns, both very authentic. Noodle dishes are also great, dumplings are kind of plain. Ayran drink goes well with everything.

Great value for money.

This is a simple place, but if I'm driving by and I'm hungry, I always stop in for the Chochura dumpling soup. Parking can be inconvenient and the service is eccentric in a charming, foreign way.

OKAY FOOD, POOR SERVICE. Our family dined here earlier tonight. My sister, who has been there a couple times, thought we should have dinner there for her husband's overseas farewell trip. There were 6 of us. 5 adults and 1 child. It took a while before we got some service. The food was okay. It wasn't exceptional. Our chicken shish kebab, though, was undercooked. Blood was oozing out the centre. When we brought this to the attention of the waitress, she seemed reluctant to replace them. The chef came out, said some things in Uyghur to the waitress and left. He didn't seem happy with us either. We were given lamb shish kebabs later to replace the couple of chicken ones we returned. The kebabs were very chewy because of too much fat. When the chef came out to clear our table during our meal, we said "thank you" twice. He didn't even look up to acknowledge us. We spent a lot of money there tonight and were disappointed with the poor customer service. Sure, it's a casual place with okay food however the shortcomings in the customer service outweigh the positives.

Stir-Fried Noodles with Lots of Chili, Lamb and Vegies. The best lagman I have ever tasted at any restaurant in Australia --- my Mother used to cook this dish for us --but not as good and authentic as they cook in this restaurant

-----23 Sep, 2014-----

Lamb Shashlik, Chilli and Cumin Flavour. The flavour of this Lamb is so good that you will never get it better --I have tried many different marinades over the years that the professional Chefs have given to me but nothing even comes close to the way this old man can cook up at his restaurant --- good on you

-----17 Aug, 2014-----

Bill from Cairns. We went there last week for lunch and wow the food was so original and tasty It reminded me when I lived in Western China many years ago of the food we got used to ..mmmmmmm those lamb shashliks were to die for and laghman with hand made noodles is the best I have ever tasted --sure the restaurant has no decor or the service you expect from fine dining restaurants ---but I dont go to a restaurant to look at the decor or smiling faces i go to eat really good food .
so to all those people that are complaining about no smiles and poor decor --- get a life --and go to your MacDonalds or Hungry Jacks you have no Idea of what the Uigur food should taste like
I would like to say thanks to my friend Peter P. for taking me there and thank you the hard working staff that made this memorable day for me --keep the good work and you dont need to smile at arrogant people

Not fancy but the food is good. We really enjoyed the food here and the atmosphere of the place. Its not a flash restaurant but good, honest food. The waitress was really nice and the place had a really nice feel.

Lamb skewers. The lamb skewers were tasty with huge flavour. They are using the traditional way to flavour and cook it, hence it tasted really good.

Disappointing, very rude, and arrogant waitress. The lady who is a waitress is very rude and very arrogant. The service was extremely unpleasant. She does not respect her customers. This is our second and the last time going there. We won't be returning again.

Tasty Kabab and Spicy Noodle. We have been addicted the lamb skewed and the spicy noodle. Yummy...

Disappointing.. Amateur poor-quality food. The prices of this gloomy 'restaurant' ought to be half what they are. Save your $15 a plate and eat better noodles in a food court at half the price.

I ordered two plates of different chao la mian (fried noodles). Both basically tasted the same. Having read the positive reviews for Tangritah as the best Uiyghur restaurant in Adelaide, I was adrenalised to give it a go. I've lived in China and ate shou la mian (handmade noodles) almost daily, so I know what this rustic working-class/homestyle food ought to taste like.

I figured that the negative reviews were by people being unduly prissy. I don't care if the staff barely speak English, if the air conditioning marginally works, that the door squeaks terribly each case someone enters, or that the size of the restaurant smaller than a garage. I only care about taste and price.

I first learned about handmade noodles when I was in Sydney. I was introduced to it by someone from Xinjiang, so he had pretty high standards about where eat. By the first taste I was hooked on north-west Chinese noodles. I'd go 3-4 times weekly, and a plate cost around $8. So it is possible to reproduce a high standard of north-western food in Australia. If Tangritah is Adelaide's best, then unfortunately Adelaidians have to try this food at someone's home or leave the city if they wish to know what north-western Chinese should be.

The level of oil resembles the worse of fast food, a kind of Chinese KFC. But the chief disappointment was that the food was insipid. I couldn't eat again.

This restaurant is not cheap at all considering what you get. Fifteen dollars for a plate of bland noodles in a gloomy space with no redeeming adjuncts like smiles or elbow room. Handmade noodle dishes are the cheapest food you can make because they're primarily flour and water, so they should be at the lowest price range. This is why in China this is the food of the poor and sell for 50 cents to $1. I make handmade noodles at home for about one-tenth of the cost of this restaurant, which had me asking myself why I was eating here.

What I most regret is ordering two plates, costing me $30. I could have bought six Dominos pizzas with that, or made 15 plate of handmade noodles at home. I really feel cheated each moment I recollect it. If you still decide to visit I recommend you order just one plate and share between the two of you, as it's improbable you'll order a second and with the $15 you save you can eat something higher in quality and class than Tangritah like... at a food court.

Yumm yummm. We love that stir fired spicy noodles with lamb ,it's No.25 on the menu , that's my second time been there , I will definitely come back again soon. Just one things, u may wait for more then 20 minutes for get your dish . I saw that they were only 3 people working at this very busy restaurant , old couple and their daughter ,I think. Any way , food is yummy . Can't wait to go there again .!

I am a one of regular customer of this lovely , small restaurant . The restaurant is very simple , just very simple , running by old couple . service is just so so ,I always take the drinks ,cutlery and menu by myself, but its okay for me.Because the food is amazing. Its amazing! I love that hand made noodles with lamb, and their chicken wings kebabe. But u really need to let them know if u cant eat any spicy . cuz most of dishes are hot spicy . lovely family restaurant and lovely people there.

Very rude and appalling service.. This is our third time here and our last. The service was extremely unpleasant. We asked the waitress if she could explain to use the difference between two dishes in the menu to which she replied rudely, "can't you see the difference for yourselves?". No doubt it's not a fine dining but the rudeness is totally uncalled for. The food we had was average. We thought they were salty and oily.

Great food! but.... Yes, I think, after 3 years, it is time to address the elephant in the room. Tangritah uyghur has been one of my favourite restaurants because their food is very, very delicious. Their ding ding somien, laghman, cho'chura, dumplings, lamb kebab, dapanji, polo, funchoza salad are an absolute delight! Plus, there are only several foods that failed me (the yoghurt drink, bean curd in spicy sauce, lamb dish with naan). The elephant in the room is the fact that their service is very~~~ bad. The staffs rarely smile. You have to get the menu by yourself 90% of the time. You even have to get their attention to get them to take your orders 90% of the time. Your food 'will' arrive very late. When it's time to pay, you kind of have to search for them too (because they are always at the back) and get this, they won't allow you to go beyond the curtain (which is the only way to call them). Despite ALL these, their food is insatiably good. Conflicting, yes I know...

Good food but bad service. Went there today with my family. before I decided to go there I read some testimonies from internet about the place which mostly said that the food is delicious but they only have one lady that serves people with unfriendly and unwelcome face!!!
When I went there tonite I found out that all about it was true! good food but the lady is so bad! no smile and really bad service to all the people eating there. when I was there one guest was arguing with that freaking lady because of her n'hospitalitiness! what ashame! I ordered one portion of Naan bread which never came to our table. when I asked about the order she said that I did not order the bread! what the heck!!! that was my first and last time going there! hospitality and great service is above all although the food is good!
I think the owner should change the lady and hire somebody else as the waitress otherwise the people will not come there!

Best Uyghur restaurant in Adelaide. We have Tarim Uyghur restaurant just around the corner from our house BUT we love this place way more that we're willing to drive from Modbury to the city just to eat here. I've been walking past this place for the past 3 years and have always noticed how packed it was yet never ventured inside. My friend told me that she went there & hated the service but was conflicted because she loved the food.
One Friday night, my partner and I just couldn't agree on what to eat so we finally decided to eat there & see whether their food is better than how his mum cooks it. Boy, were we blown away!?
It's been our regular haunt now... we always order the same things and surprisingly the bill is still under $50!!! We order 5x lamb shashliks, dumplings, lamb soup and noodles. We have yet to try the chicken/potato/noodle dish.

Be warned that the owners are not prone to smiling. Hahaha but don't be put off by it, if you can look past the unsmiling faces and the decor, you'll surely enjoy the food. ^_^

The foods is awesome even though most of the menu had lamb. Unfortunately, I had a bad service with one of the waitress, it happen to my other friend as well thus I encourage this person to learn n respect customer. It's kind a rude manner but other than that it was great.

Didn't deliver results. Was keen to try this restaurant after recommendations, and was forewarned not to expect fantastic decor but rather to enjoy wonderful food. However, as the meal progressed there were a series of disappointments, one after the other.

As warned, the decor was... as expected. Once the dishes arrived, the dishes were placed on the edge of the table rather than in front of us, so we were left to place the dishes and cutlery in front of us by ourselves.

The food... the Samsas were nice but not much better than sausage rolls. The meat skewers were tasty but one chunk of meat was a large lump of gristle which was a rude shock. Dumplings were average, and the rice was terrible – claggy, oily, quite unpleasant and certainly not something that would make me take another serving.

On the positives: dishes were served quickly and were a good size which were affordable.
The negatives: actual service at the table was lousy, dishes didn't taste that nice, and uninviting decor.

I attempted to keep an open mind when dining here and I am calling this as I see it – even a diamond in the rough should sparkle, and this place didn't sparkle.

A bit different, but in a very good way!. This is a hidden treasure on Grote Street. The front is very unassuming and plain, with just a few pictures of some food in the front window. Walk in and it looks a little depressing, with rows of what look like old school desks pushed together with plastic table cloths on top. Order the lamb pie and dumplings and be prepared to be blown away. The food is magnificent; Uyghur cuisine (from Western China) is unlike anything else I've ever had. It seems to be a fusion of Asian and Middle Eastern, but it is sublime. Also quite inexpensive. Will have to try the Shishkebab one day. Portions are enormous. Staff are wonderful. One of my very favourite restaurants in Adelaide.

Food are so authentic and great for value, love it. But don't expect you will have table services.

Homey, spicy, value for money. Went with a large group and we each ordered a dish or two.

The skewers of lamb and chicken were amazing - beautiful charcoal flavour. An eggplant and veggie dish was so good we fought each other to soak up the juices with naan bread. The lamb pie was also yumbo. It's Halaal so no alcohol. The spiciness was that perfect balance of exciting and warming without being bitterly hot. The various noodles were silky and amazing.

If I could wave a magic wand, it would be to make a few more vegetarian and chicken dishes available. It was a very lamb-heavy menu and unfortunately they were out of what looked like a very nice tofu dish.

Definitely go with a large group - this is a tiny restaurant not set up to provide an intimate dining experience for two. We had a table of 8 and that was the perfect sized group.

The atmosphere reminded me of someone's grandmother's house - knick knacks on the wall, dollar store vinyl tablecloths and plastic chairs and it's not in a flashy part of town. Trust me, you won't care once the food arrives.

Top birthday surprise. Great value for money. friendly family restaurant, welcomed babies handled nappy change with aplomb.
Different and great food (Spiced Eggplant etc mixed vegetables excellent, also the lamg & chicken kabobs and the dumpling soup (& the lamb pie and the special lamb & bread). Very inexpensive value for money.
One mild criticism, there was no diet coke or pepsi or similiar diet drink. Will recommend to friends
Germaine
The place and the people were charming the fried Rice lamb raisins accompanied by carrot orange pepper and etc salad to go back for. Regulars recommend the handmade noodles. Will be going back for the 'pie' and the kebabs.

Sharing is the key. Great place for large groups or couples as it is based around the sharing of food. We had dumplings (ok) and noodle soups (tasty) but will definiely have to go back for the kebabs - they look delicious!! The tea was delicious as well.

Tangritah Uyghur is located in a room the size of my double garage with a kitchen area concealed in the back part of the building. The decor here is very basic with a few decorative ornaments hanging off the walls.
On The Chopping Board
Have you ever walked past a dingy looking restaurant with dated decor, clear plastic table cloths covering lace table cloths, lavender washed walls and random hanging pictures of Egypt and thought 'I want to eat there!'? Well I found myself in this situation on a Friday night, wanting to try out Tangritah Uyghur Shish Kebab Restaurant on Grote St, which always seemed to pull a solid crowd. With none of the dining party ever having tried Uyghur (pronounced wee-gur) food before, we had no idea what to expect or even what to order. This doesn't happen very often given that most of my friends are avid foodies. Lucky the A4 primary school binder menus we were provided with had photos! After much deliberation, we decided on Lamb Pie (Gush Nan), Lamb Dumplings (Su Mantisi), Lamb Kebabs, Chicken Kebabs, and Stir Fried Chicken with Vegetables (Tohu Qorumisi). First to come out was the Lamb Pie and this set the Uyghur food experience bar very high. The Lamb Pie was a flaky, short pastry encasing

Cheap, tasty Uyghur food – specialties like dumpling soup, shishkebabs and lamb pan pies. Hearty and warming food.
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Most Chinese food in Adelaide tends to be variations of Cantonese or Shanghainese cuisine, with the occasional Sichuan place thrown in. There are however a small number of Uyghur style places around too if you know where to look, the most prominent of which is Tangritah Uyghur Shishkebab Restaurant on Grote Street. Again a very casual dining room, basic but not unpleasant. If you're going to try the food here a love of lamb would be advisable, as would as taste for spicy food. It's a long way from more familiar styles of Chinese food - the Uyghur are a Turkish people and the food is central Asian in style. Polow style rice (I think that's how they spell it here) is nice and fluffy but slightly oily. With carrots and a little bit of meat it's pleasant enough but not necessarily something I'd order again. Better was the lamb pie. Crispy on top, slightly soggy on the bottom where the juices from the lamb had soaked through, and filled with minced lamb and onion. As with all the dishes on
