Review Rahmen Genki - Artarmon

Albert Tedjadiputra
This is probably one of the best Japanese restaurants in the northern part of Sydney. Located in the quiet suburb of Artarmon near the train station, there are also some other Japanese restaurants and the stores nearby. Ramen Genki is also famous hence there will be some queues of people during the dining time. Cheese croquette is tasty and very succulent. Tonkotsu ramen is tasty, but there is no protein or best in it 🧐.

Popular Japanese restaurant in Artarmon, and easy to see why! Authentic, flavourful dishes for decent value. Love the takoyaki - crispy on the outside, gooey in the centre, reminiscent of those in Japanese markets!

Ordered Tonkotsu Ramen, Shio Special and Tonkotsu Curry Rice. I like the Shio special Ramen as it is just a little spicy. Curry gravy was just perfect for my taste with chunky pork tonkotsu. Reasonably priced as well.
Alex Ho
Homey Japanese food with generous serving sizes. It's not a place for thrilling food but it does fit the bill for a chill and not too expensive dinner. BONUS: This place is dog friendly and allows BYO, there is a BWS just across the road on the other side of the station.

We had quick lunch on recent Saturday at this old Japanese casual restaurant in Artarmon. We ordered mix-don (a rice with fried pork cutlet tonkatsu and fried prawn ebi furai) and ton shogayaki don (stir fried pork belly with ginger sauce + rice). Both dishes are good authentic Japanese lunch staples and we love them. The mix-don is the better option and comes with nice miso soup. The place is quite spacious and you can choose to sit inside or outside al fresco style. The ambience is reasonable for suburban casual restaurant. The customer services from staff members are reasonable as well. The menu items are quite extensive and prices are competitive with similar set-ups in Sydney. The best thing is that you can pay with all credit cards (including Amex) without additional surcharge - which is the best customer service practice.

Service is friendly, ramen was tasty. We ordered the classic Tonkotsu - which was delicious, garlicky and well balanced. Also ordered the spicy soy broth, but found it a bit too salty and sour (from pickles) to our palate.

Hole in the wall Japanese place with homely food and generous portions. The takana fried rice was the highlight. Ramens are not too bad either

Very cosy and comfortable atmosphere. Reminds me of the local Japanese restaurants in Japan. The food is very authentic and tasty. Friendly staff. 100% recommend!

I’ve come here many times over the years and the food has been consistent and delicious.

This time we came for ramen. The tonkotsu ramen was rich but not overly salty, noodles were perfecty al dente. Sadly only 1 piece of chashu.

The spicy tonkotsu (Godzilla) ramen is not spicy, just warming. I wish they add bamboo shoots to every bowl of ramen.
Belinda
I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. My partner ordered the teriyaki spicy chicken and had food poisoning.

Very similar experience to another reviewer on Zomato who ate at the same restaurant and also had food poisoning! Eat at your own risk..

When you think of Ramen the heart of the broth would just burst with different types of flavours. I got the Shio ramen, there's lack of flavours in the broth. I was expecting a sensation of saltiness and umami flavour from the Ramen but what I got was pretty disappointing. The pork was good, it was fatty and has flavour, the noodles was okay nothing special about it. The staff was friendly, she made a cute mistake by almost giving me the wrong drink.

Ordered the Miso ramen and ended up with FOOD POISONING for 1 week! This place use to be great, but the quality has obviously fallen in recent times. Avoid!

Their pork katsu curry is amazing, lots of flavour and quite a large serve.

It is an authentic Japanese place.

The staff are very friendly and helpful, but the seating is a bit random and haphazard as you just choose your own spot, and can get quite busy. Sitting outside it's quite nice though.

I'm not a fan of the ramen here though, too salty for me.
Jack
Fast and efficient service. Food cooked fresh with all expectations met. Bland decor but comfortable outdoor setting. Cash only. Reasonably priced.

First of all I had no idea that Artarmon was such a Japanese Mecca - within 20 metres of each other are 3 Japanese restaurants and two Japanese grocers. So my hopes were high for this place and I have to say the Tonkotsu ramen here is pretty good. Broth is a little weak however, but had nice texture and overall was satisfying.
Very friendly and quick service.
Ambience is casual and almost food courty, but that said it feels cosy and homely.

Simple place, good flavour... Was craving Japanese food for a cold winter night and came upon this small simple looking place near artamon stn. We had hot chilli teriyaki and pork katsu Don, good flavour with great portion size.

Genki ramen is one of those hidden gems and I definitely appreciate that. No long lines but the food and service is excellent.

The servings are sizeable and great variety of ramen and rice dishes. The staff is really friendly.

Probably one of my top two favourite ramen in Sydney.
Genki reminds me a lot of sun-sun at crows nest. Sun has closed down as the plaza they were in was demolished. Glad we 'stumbled' into here after walking by a few times in the past. A basic ramen shop with outdoor seating staffed by real japs with traditional jap hospitality👍🏼.

Prices are down to earth, portions generous, served piping hot, noodles al dante, broth light and delish. Perfect for the coming chilly evenings😍.

Perfect! Perfect service and perfect food! My husband and I would move from our beautiful rural nsw country town to Sydney just to eat ramen everyday!

We love visiting Rahmen Genki because their menu is full of authentic Japanese dishes for reasonable prices. The food is hearty and guaranteed to satisfy (the Godzilla ramen bowl is HUGE, well-worthy of feeding a kaiju stomach).

A casual ramen outlet near Artarmon train station. There are a variety of ramen and rice dishes to choose from the menu. The chicken cutlet curry is quite popular too. Today we ordered a bowl of healthy veggie ramen and look at the serving size - very generous!! The stir-fry pork w veg is also very tasty. Open till late.

Genki means "energetic". Unfortunately, their ramen doesn't follow the word.

We ordered Shio and tonkotsu ramen. The worst tonkotsu I've ever had. There is none of tonkotsu flavour. The soup is thin, that's okay but thin soup doesn't mean no flavour. You'll find thin soup with full of flavour, but not at this store. Even my partner refused to eat it after having one mouthful the soup.

Shio ramen is not shio flavour again. It's more "tan men(タンメン)" . Menma (bamboo) had weird flavour.

However, cha-sui was good.

I won't go back there until they make proper soup stock. Sorry.

Have been going there since 7-8 years ago. One of my favourite ramen places in Sydney. The place isn't too big but always have customers. My favourite ramen was the spicy one, perfect for winter. Portion was so big! I was on a cruise for a week, and before I got off the ship, all I crave for was a hot bowl of ramen, so we went, craving satisfied!

This was the place where I first tried Ramen so it holds a large nostalgia value for me. I used to get the Negri-Miso regularly. I once tried the shoyu and it was way too soy/salty. I haven't been game to try one ever again.
Fiona
1st time i ate here the ramen was pretty bland. I did go back for a 2nd time. I asked my friends to meet me there. They wanted to wait until I arrived befire ordering. So the moment that I arrived, a waitress came out demanding that we order straight away or we would have to leave. We chose to leave as that kind of rude service is not worth any meal. So we told her we're leaving. She ran inside and told 2 older staff members who yelled abuse at us as we left. Pretty shocking behaviour totally unprovoked. I def do not recommend anyone wastes their time on this place. I think people are learning as this place is usually empty.
Randomness_of_existence
I've heard the ramen was very popular here so decided to try it out. I ordered a miso ramen and the soup seemed very deep in colour, topped with corn and bamboo shoots and pork slices. I have to say that I was a little disappointed. I wasn't too impressed with the taste of the ramen. I had the gyoza as well and that was too bad. If I were to come back, it'll be to try the other dishes on the menu.

No flavour in both shoyu and shio ramen.!!

We arrived and the place felt quite cosy. Seemed like a good restaurant because it was busy so we decided to give it a try. we ordered 2 ramen and we were very underwhelmed. This is your type of restaurant you go to of youre on a budget. Cheap but poor quality.

Soups had no flavour and the toppings werent fresh. $24 for 2 people is pretty cheap but if youre after a good tasting meal then this place isnt te place to go.
Dave
Great joint, great food, great customer service! Prices a tad bit expensive than usual but worth it. You've just earned yourself a regular customer!

The place looks the real deal, being in this small corner of Artarmon near the station with a few other Japanese shops run by Japanese people (sadly the bookshop has now closed). However, the ramen is only quite good, much as I want it to be more. The soup base is tasty, though it seems to be simply salty with the heat of pepper thrown in. Friendly staff, good service, good rustic ramen shop feel.

We went as a group of four and all the ramen bowls were way too salty. The chef's recommendation was a disappointing choice - it had too many flavours that didn't really go well together and tasted a little like a curry soup bowl. First time we struggled to finish our ramen. Service was quite good, though that's usually the case with most Japanese restaurants.
Jmanchatty
Love the katsu curry here but it really depends on when you come. Sometimes u get a decent size katsu and sometimes you get a small piece. You get a lot of rice and curry though so that means youre always leaving full

Funnily enough the ramen isnt that great, the noodle is nice but the soup isnt full of flavour

Recommend to come and revsiit for the curry, the gyoza is also pretty nice

Long time ago, this place we visited so often.
If you are a shoyu connoisseur you will automatically realise there has been a change. The broths shoyu saltiness has gone up a notch, however atill edible. The soya sauce broth he is using must be a different brew.

The noodles are just right. No kaedama needed, the owner chef makes authentic ramen dishes, my fav is shoyu followed by the takana, pic attached.

Noone in sydney not even Ryos can compare the shio and shoyu ramen. The noodles are placed well, and not a mess like salary man or the sokyo ramen bar. Presentation simple and nostalgic. In fact, I am hungry thinking about it. Reminds me of my dormy inn 930pm nights.......

I come here on occasion now and so does Lee Lin Chin... and finish off with a dirty brownie from Salvage and their batch brew of the day.

Nothing fancy about this place, dishes are reasonably priced, food tastes delicious, staff is friendly and service is quick. Genki Croquettes. Gyoza with preserved vegetables and rice. Shio Ramen with Hard Boiled Egg. 6 Wilkes Avenue, Artarmon, Sydney, NSW. View web version

Used to come here a lot. Not much has changed, ramen is pretty decent as is the gyoza. Also good that service is quick and wait is never too long. Priced well and good value for what you get.

Huge portions, consistently delicious bowls of ramen. Even their gyoza is tasty.
We've tasted both veg and meat versions - the veg ramen is a bit on the salty side.

Been here for an eternity. Ramen and rice dishes that satisfies the local Japanese. Curry plate is huge. Friendly service. Just remember to order and pay at the counter. Cash only.

Great little ramen joint in Artamon really close to the station. Used to come here quite regularly on lunch breaks as my old workplace was somewhat nearby, so I've tried a few options. Now I pretty much always get the kimuchi as it's my absolute favourite! The ramen tastes fresh and not too salty, and the kimchi adds an extra flavour hit making it the perfect partner to the noodles. The gyoza here is pretty good too. I have to say I wouldn't try the Godzilla again though... it was more peppery spicy rather than chilli spicy which was more of what I was expecting.

There's a little Japanese convenience store a couple of shops down as well (lots of Japanese snacks including green tea kit kats!), a Japanese bookstore, in addition to sushi next door - making this whole area a mini slice of Japan so quite enjoyable all around.
Dango
Nice authentic japanese ramen bar (well, given the size of the place, you can't really call it a bar...) located literally next to artarmon station.

The soup isn't like the thick broth that you get in other ramen places like ippudo or manpukku, but it's served fast. And... Cheap, even the most expensive ramen in their isn't more than $15.

As long as you don't need a refined ramen / don experience and only need your fast ramen fix, genki is definitely worth trying if you're in the area.
Amys_food_adventures
Great Japanese cuisine on the other side of the railway station. Has lots of places to sit indoors and outdoors and the kitchen looks big enough to serve a food hall!

Ordered the Ebi-don for takeaway $13.50 which is Prawn cutlet with fried onion and egg on rice with miso soup.

Since it was takeaway I got a little miso soup sachet to make on my own at work which i thought it was a great idea because most of the time you can never finish the miso soup if you get a big meal.

The Ebi-don was ok, i thought there would at least be some other items in there but it was just mainly rice & onion.

Staff are friendly and my food order came out pretty quick.

Been going to this place for a good 10 years. Consistent. I have yet to see the quality levels drop so you're pretty much guaranteed a consistent feed each time you go. The chilli chicken rice dish is my go to. Hits the spot every time. Obviously ramen is their specialty, but not being a ramen fan, I tend to go for their rice dishes. The katsu curry is also fantastic.

It’s 8pm and I’m finally leaving the office. The adrenaline of deadlines subsides enough for my belly to get through: “Hey, I’m starving. What’s for dinner?!”. I’m struck with a panic inducing hunger and need to feed. Fast. I’ve got a serious case Japanese crave. The sunlight which basks this little villagey side of Artarmon is long gone, together with the lunch and dinner-time rush. The area is now basked in a dull, eerie glow.

Run by a control freak. Make sure you don't read the menu board while sipping on a coffee, sit down without permission, or let your kid touch the salt and pepper shakers. Being scolded like a child by the soup nazi put me off my food.
Ben Boyd
Been coming to this ramen shop on & off for 15 yrs. usually very reliable for a hot bowl of ramen on a cold day.
Although today the chef was a Seat Nazi, turning my 9yr old daughter to tears because she went and sat down while I was ordering. Very odd. Some chefs should stay in the kitchen and not try to run a restaurant.
Then we were blasted with a "Jesus the saviour" radio program while we ate. Not pleasant.
Will not be going back anytime soon.

One of the first Sydney ramen places that we've ever been many years ago and still amongst our top 3.
PlanMB
...it has a steady flow of locals coming in for both the ramen and rice dishes.

This bowl of noodles is a winner, especially on a cold and wet day. Better still, it’s a winner if you have an alcohol hangover on a cold and wet day.

We've been out all morning hunting treasure for our bookstore, and we were feeling just a little shabby from staying out last night watching the tennis with a hundred or so very cheery ladies and a few fargone Cronulla Sharks supporters at the Golden Barl

Artarmon is one of my favourite suburbs on the north shore. It's villagy, great public transport and is home to some great eateries too. Rahmen Genki is a Japanese noodle bar that serves your usual ramen nori , teriyaki and gyoza , fast and delicious. My gyoza comes out hot and cooked right through, which I love. It's dark almost burnt on one side, just the way I like it. The filling is steaming hot but unfortunately there's no juicy squirt often found in Chinese versions. My rahmen with old style shoyu noodles looks like ramen with pork, egg and various vegetables. The broth is tasty but not over powering. What was over powering, but I absolutely love is the burnt onion that is shown at bottom of the picture above. Delicious. Note, this restaurant accepts cash only and you need to order before you sit down. Rahmen Genki Sho 6, Wilkes Avenue, Artarmon 9410 3777

I used to work and live in Artarmon, so I know this area pretty well. Artarmon is a small suburb tucked in between Chatswood and St Leonards. There isn’t much going on in this suburb, but a small community of Koreans and Japanese who’s been living there h

Delicious miso ramen and the best katsu curry. Authentic Japanese, I've never been disappointed the multiple times I come here. Always delicious an the servings are massive. Defiantly for people who love their food. The gyoza a and croquette are great sides, I take all my mates here as it's cheap and super tasty.

This has been an old fave of mine for years now, so i guess I should write them a review. Simple straight forward and delicious soups. Super umami yumi and perfect hangover cure (that's probably just me - but you might wanna try it). Great if you have kids or to dine alone and they have table and chairs outside with heaters in the Winter. I like the little courtyard area they are in and share with a few other Asian eateries and shops. Right outside the station makes it super easy to get to.

Great place to eat Nice fo.... Great place to eat
Nice food great people and so cheap
All food is fresh and smells great
It's a must try

Surprised the croquette wasn't mentioned .. It's one of the best appetitizer around.. If u like thick pork bone soup like I do.. Definitely should try the tonkatsu ramen.
Pheebs
Miso ramen was thick and tasty without being salty (the soup at some other places leave your mouth feeling quite thirsty)... Ate it till the last drop! Negi shio ramen (salt based broth) was a nice contrast to the miso...a clear soup that wasn't overly salty either- just right. YUMM!! Very generous portions too!

DELISH and CHEAP!!!. What a fab place to go with a few bottles of wine for a catch up with the girls, a cheap dinner before a night out, an affordable family dinner or just an easy mid week dinner!

For $11 i literally stuffed myself until i was in pain i was SO FULL!

I got Don Katsu rice bowl, it was so insanely tasty. Loads of tasty rice and pork schnitzel and sauce - was more than enough! Tried some of my friends dishes, all similarly tasty and none of use spent more than $12 on our food and we didnt finish it there was so much!

The menu is simply a board lent up against the cash register, the decor is clean but minimum with a few posters up but you dont need decor or fancy menus. Ive been to this place a few times and ill be back. My friends are addicted. Its right near Artarmon station so its very easy to jump off the train at Artarmon on your way home from work on Friday night and grab some delicious Rahmen Genki.

Fabulous. Got a craving now actually!
Samoht
Not bad, but beware. MSG used in all their soup apart from the Norishio Ramen. So you get abit thirsty afterwards.
Jackie Li
If you want real Japanese ramen. This is the place. Order the tonkotsu ramen and Katsu curry. It is not a romantic setting. But if u want to read some Japanese manga while you eat, they have free manga to read
Seb
By far the worst Ramen I have tasted, no amount of Soy and chilli was able to rescue this one. Unfortunately not up to any Japanese standard for the amount of money paid. If Japanese Ramen is what you are after, best to go to nearby Crows Nest. Best Ramen is at Menya (Chinatown) and Ichiban Boshi (Galleries Victoria city/Bondi.

I love this resturant. I have been eating there since I was a kid and still enjoy it just as much. The food is delicious and the staff are very friendly. It's casual yet the food is five stars. My favourite place to eat.
