Princess Greedy Guts

Amongst all the Shanghainese restaurants, this Northern Chinese restaurant may go unnoticed unless your in the know. And it was a worthy discovery. Authentic Northern style dishes such as the big bowl chicken, full of chillies & pepper with braised tender chunks of chicken on the bone & potatoes that has soaked in all of the flavour. All the noodles are handmade & a good testament to this Northern specialty is the length and springy-ness of the noodles. Here it is super long with good bite. Dumplings had a good skin filled with a light pork filling with hints of ginger, making it refreshing rather then heavy. The lamb skewers are a must - on metal skewers, tender pieces of well marinated lamb has been charcoal grilled & doused again in the chilli spice mix. Warning - it is numbing & spicy! Shallot pancakes were flakey and crispy but was the only disappointment for me as it had neither shallots nor flavour. It was also the only greasy dish whereas the others are not very oily at all which was a positive. There were lots of Chinese families so that was a good sign. Service is efficient and servings are super generous.
This northern Chinese flies under the radar while the Shanghai dumplings steal the limelight in Ashfield. Their soups are worth a try: thinly sliced beef or lamb with handmade noodles or choose dumplings instead. Steamed dumplings are brilliant too with lots of vinegar.
A little “north west” of Little Shanghai is this little Chinese gem.
Order the lamb soup with bread. Please order the lamb soup with bread. This little, simple bowl has noodlies bowled over. The contrasting, vibrant colours have the saliva glands working in overdrive. Seeing the chopped shallots alone, you know this is going to excite the taste buds.
