Review Xin Jiang Noodle Restaurant - Ashfield

Amongst all the Shanghainese restaurants, this Northern Chinese restaurant may go unnoticed unless your in the know. And it was a worthy discovery. Authentic Northern style dishes such as the big bowl chicken, full of chillies & pepper with braised tender chunks of chicken on the bone & potatoes that has soaked in all of the flavour. All the noodles are handmade & a good testament to this Northern specialty is the length and springy-ness of the noodles. Here it is super long with good bite. Dumplings had a good skin filled with a light pork filling with hints of ginger, making it refreshing rather then heavy. The lamb skewers are a must - on metal skewers, tender pieces of well marinated lamb has been charcoal grilled & doused again in the chilli spice mix. Warning - it is numbing & spicy! Shallot pancakes were flakey and crispy but was the only disappointment for me as it had neither shallots nor flavour. It was also the only greasy dish whereas the others are not very oily at all which was a positive. There were lots of Chinese families so that was a good sign. Service is efficient and servings are super generous.

My Google review was removed. So here's my short review, incase it'll be removed again - Please come and spend your money here if you like your food devoid of taste and swimming in oil

Great noodles! Can't ask for more for such good price too. Highly recommended. The better northern noodle house compared to the other one on the same street.

Every weekend when I come here to have a meal, I can feel the busy of the restaurant. The noodles are delicious and chewy. The waiter is very fast, and he will give us hot tea, spices and chili sauce. This kind of feeling is very good. Sometimes when he is busy, I can only see him walking around, serving dishes, cleaning the table and asking him if he is hard? He only replied that it was OK. The atmosphere here was very good and it was worth eating again

Amazing flavour, you can tell the noodles are hand pulled (so silky yet so chewy)! Highly recommend the lamb buns as well as the stewed chicken and rice! Great food, great prices, highly reccomend.

The chicken in the stirred fried chicken noodles is appalling. Overall 5/10

Owners were lovely. Food was cheap and delicious. Would recommend.

I personally felt the flavours were too strong and the dishes were excessively oily. Completely get why this would appeal to other people though, but I actually felt sick for a few days after eating here so most likely will not go back.

This northern Chinese flies under the radar while the Shanghai dumplings steal the limelight in Ashfield. Their soups are worth a try: thinly sliced beef or lamb with handmade noodles or choose dumplings instead. Steamed dumplings are brilliant too with lots of vinegar.

A little “north west” of Little Shanghai is this little Chinese gem.

Order the lamb soup with bread. Please order the lamb soup with bread. This little, simple bowl has noodlies bowled over. The contrasting, vibrant colours have the saliva glands working in overdrive. Seeing the chopped shallots alone, you know this is going to excite the taste buds.

very authentic xin jiang (north western Chinese) food, love the lamb dishes especially the lamb skewers!!! The cumin herb and spicy just got mixed well as it should be!
Very generous serving size and reasonable price!

I woke up this morning with a massive craving for handmade noodles. I instantly thought of Seabay restaurant in the city but I wasn't willing to make the trip. Instead I settled for venturing out to Parramatta to visit it's sister restaurant. When I got there, I realised there was a name change - a sly but swift sticker had been glued over the former Seabay restaurant name. Everything else looked the same and there were some menu changes. Some initial thoughts - Stir fried Handmade noodles with chicken were flavoursome. They were perfectly dancing in the right amount of oil and melted in your mouth. Vegetable salad was freshly pickled but oversauced Dumplings were dough heavy Oh and be prepared to point at the pictures in the menu as English is limited with the staff. Cheap meal for two :) Posted by Lisa P at

I learnt about uighur food (food from China Xin Jiang province), when I was in Xian. I really like it, it’s like chinese food, but a little different. Signature dish from that region will definitely be Dapanji (大盘鸡). This consists a big dish with chicken, potato and some veges in this mild spicy sauce/soup. Then they add awesome flat noodles that tastes amazing! Always cooked at aldante. Other than that, you can enjoy the deliciously spiced lamb skewers! It’s all packed with flavour! If you can’t take too much chilli, you can ask for less spice. This place is quite authentic , and definitely CHEAP!

Set sail in the seven Siberian seas of Ashfield. I've busted my knee thanks to my vigorous regime of Asian food and Playstation 3. We drive to Ashfield where we can park close as possible to food. It feels so American. We stop in the first available car park on Liverpool Road, and voila, across the road is Xin Jiang Noodle Restaurant. It's Northern Chinese: handmade noodles, dumplings, lovely stodge on a winter's day. The joy of Northern Chinese is that every restaurant is different, which makes sense considering North China is a freaking huge region. The walls and the takeaway menu are adorned with inspiring pictures of mountains, grassy plains, clear rivers, happy cows and no paint factories. The music is this kooky kind of sea shanty, Russian inspired we guess. This place is tops. The sign out the front says the noodles are 100% handmade so we have to try them. We order 'handmade noodles with meat'. The noodles are excellent and the 'meat' is lightly spiced chopped lamb. It's a winn

More time to boil?. Being a huge fan of hand made North Western Chinese noodles this place has been on my radar for some time. Prolonged expectation always tends to end in disappointment and, alas, this was no exception.

We sat down at a table and the proprietor told us to move to another table 2 minutes later. Being a busy Thursday night we understood the economics behind the request so we took it on the chin and happily moved. One menu arrived and until a second came I managed upside-down.

The order was taken promptly and just as we were wondering what was taking so long my fellow diners meal arrived, a bowl of boiled fish in a spicy broth. In all it was a nice dish, nothing you would rave about to friends, but very pleasant all the same.

Five minutes later and my main hadn't arrived nor had my fellow diner's serving of rice. She asked a waitress and it was brought out promptly but my main was no where in sight. After what seemed like a very long time and the fish being 80% consumed my main came out, Stir Fried Handmade Noodles with Lamb. Visually it was as expected and the noodles were certainly handmade, but were they cooked? I am afraid not. In fact they were well undercooked.

The thing with undercooked noodles is, they give you indigestion.
